- 0:00Speaker 1: Football at More powered by the Inside of the Burns podcast.
- 0:02Speaker 1: It's brought to you by the Fanatic Sportsbook at Ocean
- 0:05Speaker 1: Casino Resort in Atlantic City. Adam Kaplan's here today. The
- 0:10Speaker 1: Eagles brass met with the media today to wrap up
- 0:14Speaker 1: the season. It's all over, So what's next for the Birds?
- 0:17Speaker 1: We'll get into that and more, as Adam Kaplan said,
- 0:19Speaker 1: to join us now for a Thursday edition of Football
- 0:22Speaker 1: at four on the Sports Bass Live on ninety seven
- 0:25Speaker 1: three ESPN. What kind of criteria is he looking for
- 0:29Speaker 1: for a new offensive coordinator? He says, quote, You're looking
- 0:31Speaker 1: to continue to evolve as an offense. I'm looking to
- 0:35Speaker 1: bring in a guy that's gonna be the best at
- 0:38Speaker 1: helping us do that. He made multiple references, Adam that
- 0:42Speaker 1: he's looking to bring in a guy and that the
- 0:44Speaker 1: coaching staff hires are on his shoulders. Do you think
- 0:48Speaker 1: that Nick Sirianni gets to pick his own guy this time?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Again?
- 0:52Speaker 3: Well, Mike, I mean this is just coming front. Have
- 0:56Speaker 3: worked for the coaches, have worked for the Eagles. How
- 0:59Speaker 3: how he does he assissed Nick like Doug Peterson. It's
- 1:04Speaker 3: not like he knows every single assistant coach that's available.
- 1:07Speaker 3: He's been in the league a long time, but he
- 1:10Speaker 3: doesn't know everybody, so how he assists that that's the
- 1:13Speaker 3: way it works. I know people say, well did they
- 1:15Speaker 3: did Howie hire him or not? That's always debatable. But
- 1:20Speaker 3: does he suggest does he assist, absolutely he should. Any
- 1:23Speaker 3: good GM.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Should do that, right, And obviously there's a lot of
- 1:28Speaker 1: reporting out there about some big names here. How He
- 1:30Speaker 1: was kind of asked about, Hey, would you be adverse
- 1:32Speaker 1: to bringing in a bigger name if they walk out
- 1:34Speaker 1: the door?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Didn't seem like that mattered all that much to him.
- 1:38Speaker 1: There is some reporting about Mike McDaniel, Cliff Kingsbury, Kevin Stefanski.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Brian Dable. I mean, they're the biggest of the big
- 1:45Speaker 2: names out there. Correct.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Would you be surprised if one of those guys didn't
- 1:48Speaker 1: get a head coaching job if they ended up here.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Well, a couple of things I want to talk about
- 1:54Speaker 3: when we'll get past the test comments. Not much was
- 1:57Speaker 3: said of note, but I did think and I took
- 1:59Speaker 3: note of three things which I think are important to discuss,
- 2:02Speaker 3: and one of them is all what you just talked about.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I'm glad that Howie said that, and you know, how
- 2:09Speaker 3: he's got to presented to Jeff in terms of money,
- 2:11Speaker 3: that it's Nick will hire the coordinator, but the money
- 2:16Speaker 3: is important, like you have to be willing to do it.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Money's not gonna be the issue. Are you willing to
- 2:20Speaker 3: bring in someone who might leave? That's what that was
- 2:22Speaker 3: really what they're being asked. And yeah, I thought it
- 2:26Speaker 3: was good that how He said, Look, you know, we
- 2:29Speaker 3: maybe it would be Nick's call in the end. He's
- 2:31Speaker 3: got to work with him, and we'll get to that
- 2:33Speaker 3: in a second, but made it pretty clear that they're
- 2:36Speaker 3: not worried about that this time around, which is in
- 2:39Speaker 3: a way refreshing. Now now we'll see who it's who's hired,
- 2:43Speaker 3: and we'll get to what kind of Nix's response on
- 2:46Speaker 3: that subject in a second. But I'm glad that Howie
- 2:49Speaker 3: said that because he does influence in terms of he'll
- 2:54Speaker 3: he'll The way I understand is he gives Nick back
- 2:56Speaker 3: your information if Nick's not familiar with the coach, because
- 3:00Speaker 3: how He knows a lot of coaching agents, he knows
- 3:02Speaker 3: people know coach and so forth. He's really good as
- 3:04Speaker 3: information gatherer and how he assisted Doug greatly in twenty
- 3:09Speaker 3: sixteen let's put it that way. He Doug didn't know
- 3:12Speaker 3: a lot of some of the coach that he hired,
- 3:15Speaker 3: and how he suggested, Hey, you should talk to this guy,
- 3:18Speaker 3: and Doug has said no, but he didn't. And that's
- 3:20Speaker 3: where how he comes in, because again, Nick's not going
- 3:22Speaker 3: to every guy that's out there.
- 3:24Speaker 1: All right, talk with Adam kaplan here. So what kind
- 3:27Speaker 1: of coordinator do they need? What do they need out
- 3:32Speaker 1: of this new offensive coordinator? Whoever this guy may be.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, now on what we're going to talk about kind
- 3:38Speaker 3: of what they need to get out of that coordinator.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But before we do that, one thing I do want
- 3:42Speaker 3: to mention, and it's the other selling endpoint to come
- 3:45Speaker 3: out of this discussion today from the press conference was
- 3:49Speaker 3: Nick didn't want to commit to Okay, this guy hire
- 3:53Speaker 3: his own staff, what he wants to do. And he
- 3:56Speaker 3: had the right response, let's with these guys first, and
- 4:03Speaker 3: whoever it's going to be, let's see what they present
- 4:05Speaker 3: to us, and then we'll decide how we want to react.
- 4:07Speaker 3: So it's okay, yeah, you can do this, you can't
- 4:09Speaker 3: do this. That's the way he should say that. He
- 4:12Speaker 3: didn't say they wouldn't do it. Now we reported this
- 4:15Speaker 3: two years ago, and I know others put some stuff
- 4:18Speaker 3: out too. Cliff Kingsbury wanted to kind of clear out
- 4:22Speaker 3: his the Eagles coaching staff, a lot of them, not
- 4:24Speaker 3: all of them. Now he's got a chief of staff
- 4:29Speaker 3: David Rye, Clf Kingsbury does who was with him in Washington,
- 4:33Speaker 3: who will go over and Cliff goes and and by
- 4:36Speaker 3: the way, a lot of coordinators like Mike McDaniel. As
- 4:39Speaker 3: we get through this, I'm told he's got an offensive
- 4:41Speaker 3: line coach. It's definitely going to go with him. His
- 4:43Speaker 3: guy was in Miami. Well that obviously he goes all knowledge.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Do they have Chef Stallin? They have Greg Austin, who's
- 4:49Speaker 3: the assistant, so like that could be a deal breaker.
- 4:52Speaker 3: So you have not that we think Mike McDaniel would
- 4:54Speaker 3: come here anyway, because as we said from the beginning,
- 4:58Speaker 3: with anything that's out there, you could want somebody, talk
- 5:01Speaker 3: to somebody, and sometimes Eagles talk to some people that
- 5:03Speaker 3: they know they probably won't be able to hire because
- 5:05Speaker 3: they want to. They just want to get ideas, which
- 5:07Speaker 3: is nothing wrong with that. Out the laid out Davis
- 5:10Speaker 3: would do that, by the way, and around the Raiders,
- 5:13Speaker 3: but overall, Mike, as we go forward here, they.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Got lagh at him real quick.
- 5:18Speaker 1: That was a Kingsbury problem too the last time, right,
- 5:20Speaker 1: he wanted his own offensive line guy and they didn't
- 5:23Speaker 1: want to get rid of Saltlin.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I just said, Yeah, Mike, that's exactly
- 5:26Speaker 3: what I was talking about, referring to it.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I thought he said McDaniel my bed.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, No, but I did say kings very first, and
- 5:34Speaker 3: then I did say McDaniel's also got his own guy,
- 5:37Speaker 3: So both of them have their own guy. Said in fact, Mike,
- 5:39Speaker 3: you could look at everyone they're going to talk to now.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Kevin Stefanski, he's had different offensive line coaches in his
- 5:46Speaker 3: career with Cleveland, and Kevin wants to be head coach now.
- 5:50Speaker 3: He started his career with the Eagles. You know, back
- 5:52Speaker 3: in like those six or seven you never really know
- 5:54Speaker 3: how things are going to work out. And his ad,
- 5:56Speaker 3: his dad ad you remember, might be with the six
- 5:58Speaker 3: or general manager, which is insane. And you know he drafted,
- 6:01Speaker 3: he signed, Andrew bid him. Unfortunately it didn't work out.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Do I remember the success?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, who was a great player at Patton by
- 6:08Speaker 3: the way, and his son and Kevin went to pen
- 6:10Speaker 3: as well as a running back. But let let's get it.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Let let's roll this, Mike. So what did what do
- 6:14Speaker 3: the Eagles need have the new offensive coordinator? There's some
- 6:17Speaker 3: things that deals don't do, which is kind of embarrassing,
- 6:19Speaker 3: and they've done it very rarely. If you look at
- 6:22Speaker 3: the screen game, Mike, how the hell in this in
- 6:24Speaker 3: today's NFL? Could you not have a screen game? Like?
- 6:28Speaker 3: How many years have we said this now?
- 6:29Speaker 2: Which is funny because for years it felt like all
- 6:32Speaker 2: they did was run the screen.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I mean, look, there were there was there were many, many,
- 6:37Speaker 3: many moons ago they would check the ball down. Now no,
- 6:41Speaker 3: Jaalen's been willing to check it down a little bit more,
- 6:43Speaker 3: which is good. But and you know, and I know
- 6:47Speaker 3: Booked had a terrible draft the other day, No question
- 6:49Speaker 3: that's on him. But Andrew, Like, when you talk to
- 6:54Speaker 3: Andrew to checko tomorrow, ask him about will Shipley and
- 6:56Speaker 3: training him, and I'm sure he'll tell you what I'm
- 6:59Speaker 3: going to tell you right now, But I'm curious what
- 7:01Speaker 3: hell he would respond. I know what I saw in
- 7:04Speaker 3: training camp Will Shipley was very explosive out of the backfield.
- 7:07Speaker 3: DeAndre Swift is very explosive out of the backfield in
- 7:10Speaker 3: training camp two years ago. They didn't use him at
- 7:13Speaker 3: all in the past game. So that's bad coaching, Mike.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I don't want to hear that. Well, Jalen doesn't want
- 7:18Speaker 3: to do this. Jalleen wantn't do that. That's and Nick,
- 7:21Speaker 3: by the way, was asked about that today. Oh you know,
- 7:24Speaker 3: he tried to say, well, no, Jalen will you always
- 7:27Speaker 3: wants to do it. We're looking to do that kind
- 7:29Speaker 3: of thing. So we'll see about that. Here's another thing.
- 7:32Speaker 3: They don't have a slot receiver. I know Devantie Smith's
- 7:35Speaker 3: numbers inside are good. Why did you get a slot receiver? Now,
- 7:40Speaker 3: the argument against that is, well, it doesn't matter when
- 7:42Speaker 3: you have Dallas Goddard who's a free agent, Devonte Smith
- 7:45Speaker 3: and aj But but it does matter. You still should
- 7:48Speaker 3: have an inside receiver. It's just they don't use one.
- 7:52Speaker 3: It's just bad. I think it's bad coaching, Mike, And
- 7:54Speaker 3: in fact, I don't think I know it's bad coaching.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Well, you take a look at they traded to get
- 7:58Speaker 1: dots and they gave up you know, not a lot though,
- 8:01Speaker 1: really not right, but that's where they tried. I mean
- 8:03Speaker 1: but you added him and didn't use him, utilize him
- 8:06Speaker 1: in any way, shape or form.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Is my boy last year.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Now Kenny, he has lined up inside, but he's not
- 8:12Speaker 3: a pure spot like Okay, our good friend Jason about
- 8:14Speaker 3: number eighty one. Okay, the real eighty one, not troll Owe,
- 8:17Speaker 3: I'm joking. Phenomenal the slot, you know Freddie Mitchell Well.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And Jason brought up a great point after the season
- 8:23Speaker 2: was over.
- 8:23Speaker 1: He's like, listen, when you're down to one play, He's like,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I know the route that I run all the time.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I run it to perfection, and they don't have that
- 8:31Speaker 1: guy that runs that route, that has those shorthands that
- 8:35Speaker 1: the quarterback just knows.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I know if I throwed a ball to this guy,
- 8:39Speaker 2: he's gonna make that can.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely right, right my next one. Multiple personnel groupings.
- 8:45Speaker 3: It's just so pathetic, Mike for maasonal Aane. They've been
- 8:49Speaker 3: doing this now for for really four years, less Understiching,
- 8:53Speaker 3: more under Brian Johnson, Kellen Moore because he had to
- 8:56Speaker 3: kind of run Siriani scheme with his own additions to it,
- 9:00Speaker 3: and then of course this season with Kimp Patoula, which
- 9:02Speaker 3: was a disaster, but they're big on three by one,
- 9:05Speaker 3: two by two. That's you know, that's what they love.
- 9:07Speaker 3: They love doing that. Yeah, they'll balance a little bit
- 9:10Speaker 3: twelve eleven personnel been a little bit at thirteen this year,
- 9:13Speaker 3: which is good to see. But they're just not divers
- 9:16Speaker 3: in their personnel grouping. I just it's so annoying and
- 9:20Speaker 3: so pathetic. I mean, evolving whatever adjective that Siri E
- 9:26Speaker 3: wants used, they haven't evolved with him with their scheme.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I understand how great of his record is. We acknowledge
- 9:33Speaker 3: that he's a very good head coach, but he's not
- 9:35Speaker 3: He's not been good enough to in the last three years.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Just think about it. He's fired to at the last
- 9:39Speaker 3: three offense winnters. What does that tell you?
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yeah, no question that the personnel groupings they had none.
- 9:45Speaker 1: It was all basically and listen, we all fall into
- 9:49Speaker 1: this Adam, We're like, oh I got a J. Brown
- 9:51Speaker 1: and they got DeVante Smith and that else. Really and
- 9:53Speaker 1: as teams started to say, all right, well that's that's
- 9:56Speaker 1: your two guys. And listen, they won a lot of
- 9:59Speaker 1: one on one the last couple of years. They didn't
- 10:01Speaker 1: win as many one on.
- 10:02Speaker 3: One Mike, but you can't depend on it now, on't
- 10:05Speaker 3: you what you just said? Yeah, you could do a
- 10:07Speaker 3: better job of scheme in the open, but they're too
- 10:08Speaker 3: dependent on winning one on one fourth and eleven, right,
- 10:12Speaker 3: you're running four verts versus quarters coverage. You're basically saying
- 10:16Speaker 3: we got to beat deep coverage. Well, that's stupid. On
- 10:18Speaker 3: the fourth and eleven, you talked about it earlier a
- 10:21Speaker 3: couple of minutes ago, Like on a fourth and eleven,
- 10:23Speaker 3: you gotta have inbreakers, you gotta have so and shallow.
- 10:25Speaker 3: They didn't do that. So another thing now that everybody
- 10:28Speaker 3: knows this, because the tape shows that Jalen is usually
- 10:32Speaker 3: near the bottom of getting the bottom of his hands quicker.
- 10:36Speaker 3: He holds on the ball too long, way too long.
- 10:39Speaker 3: That's got to happen. Now, that's a hurts issue, and
- 10:42Speaker 3: that's a coaching issue. A better job whoever the coordinator is,
- 10:44Speaker 3: is making him think faster. One of the things I know,
- 10:50Speaker 3: I'm down in the middle with hurts. I'm not a defender,
- 10:53Speaker 3: I'm not a detractor. Do we tell the truth here
- 10:55Speaker 3: inside of the birds? That's our job. We educate people.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I'll say this again, it hurts through the ball extremely
- 11:01Speaker 3: all times since the Charger game. I know people want
- 11:04Speaker 3: to say he turned it over four times twice in
- 11:05Speaker 3: one play. I know all that, but by tape studies
- 11:08Speaker 3: the number one criteria for a player valuation. There are
- 11:12Speaker 3: times when it hurts through the heck out of football,
- 11:15Speaker 3: there's something there to build on. I was very angry
- 11:18Speaker 3: last night with our Patreon people last night talking about
- 11:22Speaker 3: all the problems with their offensive scheme. But I also
- 11:25Speaker 3: pointed out there's something there to build off of some
- 11:27Speaker 3: of the good things that Jalen did late in the season.
- 11:30Speaker 3: It got lost and at times how bad he was
- 11:32Speaker 3: and the structure and the play calling. But I would
- 11:35Speaker 3: like the new coordinator to be able to build on
- 11:38Speaker 3: this and coach him better. And you want someone who's
- 11:43Speaker 3: got a quarterback background. Brian Dable, who would be a
- 11:45Speaker 3: slam Doug Higher. He understands how to coach quarterbacks. He
- 11:49Speaker 3: does and his system. I love his system, which is
- 11:52Speaker 3: a combination of the Ron Earhart two tight end system,
- 11:58Speaker 3: the Josh McDaniels runs, and more pro concepts. And he
- 12:02Speaker 3: took some stuff out of college. It's just a great
- 12:05Speaker 3: system and he did a great ja. He also did
- 12:06Speaker 3: a good job with Daniel Jones. I know, I know
- 12:08Speaker 3: that people who have no wouldn't know any better, but
- 12:10Speaker 3: I'll look at that he was terrible and twenty four
- 12:13Speaker 3: before he went, you know, to uh to the Viking
- 12:16Speaker 3: obvious use me to the Vikings and then what he
- 12:19Speaker 3: did with the Colts. But Makeith definitely had some very
- 12:22Speaker 3: good moments. In fact, his best year was under Brian Dable.
- 12:25Speaker 3: But Dana Jones's never good quarterbacks. We have to understand that,
- 12:29Speaker 3: you know, there's no contact on social media. That contact matters, folks.
- 12:33Speaker 3: You got to do a better job when you're doing
- 12:35Speaker 3: research on a play caller.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Well obviously you know, put alot no longer here. They
- 12:40Speaker 1: asked him why, you know he yeah, he asked why.
- 12:44Speaker 1: He said, we need to evolve. We need to evolve
- 12:46Speaker 1: as an offense. And I guess one of the questions
- 12:48Speaker 1: is are you able to evolve this offense with this quarterback?
- 12:51Speaker 1: Do we believe that that they have been scaling this
- 12:54Speaker 1: offense back because of the quarterback, or that the quarterback
- 12:58Speaker 1: can take it?
- 13:00Speaker 2: Did he run Mike McDaniel's offense?
- 13:02Speaker 3: All right? So no, the latter. That's why it makes
- 13:05Speaker 3: no sense. He hasn't shown the ability other than briefly
- 13:10Speaker 3: to process at a high level. Process means you're getting
- 13:14Speaker 3: out quickly. You know what you're looking at now. As
- 13:16Speaker 3: I said earlier a couple of minutes ago, it started
- 13:19Speaker 3: for me. The best throw of his career is that
- 13:22Speaker 3: Charger gave you. You remember, Mike, infect I know we
- 13:23Speaker 3: talked about a football for that pass he threw the
- 13:27Speaker 3: Devonte Smith to the right. I mean almost grew angry.
- 13:30Speaker 3: It was one of those like how the heck did
- 13:32Speaker 3: he do this? You'll love that's that's quick processing. But
- 13:37Speaker 3: McDaniels and the reason why Tua never made it while
- 13:40Speaker 3: he got benched is when Tua processed quickly, it was
- 13:43Speaker 3: beautiful when he didn't eat hole on the ball and
- 13:46Speaker 3: he get hit. Well, what happens with Jalen is when
- 13:48Speaker 3: he's not sure what he's seeing, he breaks the pocket.
- 13:50Speaker 3: He ruins the progression. So I don't listen. We said
- 13:55Speaker 3: this before, Mike. This will be our ninth year talking
- 13:57Speaker 3: about this on Inside the Birds. You never say never.
- 14:00Speaker 3: It's a phrase will always use because strange things happen,
- 14:04Speaker 3: particularly with the Eagles and coaching and personnel decisions. You're
- 14:08Speaker 3: told one thing privately, another happens when they There are
- 14:10Speaker 3: a lot of change on the mind, but they need
- 14:12Speaker 3: diversity in the passing Mike the concepts, let's modernize this thing.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And and Greg co o Sell said it best on
- 14:19Speaker 3: inside the tape with me this week. They gotta evolved here.
- 14:22Speaker 3: They got to Oh it's another coordinator. Janel's got to
- 14:25Speaker 3: deal with it. And that's the bottom line. It is
- 14:27Speaker 3: what it is. I know it's not the fairest thing,
- 14:28Speaker 3: but they got to progress here.
- 14:30Speaker 1: All right, Adam kaplan, We'll see if they get better
- 14:33Speaker 1: diversity in the passing game, better use it to the personnel.
- 14:36Speaker 1: They get the ball out of hurts hands a little faster.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Oh boy, this is gonna be interesting.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Uh, I'm praying. Where's a praying meme? I'm praying.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Peter Schreker said the other day. I thought it was interesting.
- 14:46Speaker 1: He said, there's nine head coaching opportunities, but the Eagles
- 14:50Speaker 1: offensive coordinator might be more interesting than.
- 14:53Speaker 2: All of them.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yes, which, by the way, one of them has been
- 14:59Speaker 2: filled by John Harbal.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Now now I'm not Derek Kutter. Todd Monkin has a
- 15:04Speaker 3: very good shot to end up there. And we're gonna
- 15:06Speaker 3: We're still gonna talk about Todd monkt because our show
- 15:08Speaker 3: tomorrow I'm taping. I'm taking a taping the show with
- 15:10Speaker 3: Greg co Sell tonight. We're gonna talk about some great
- 15:13Speaker 3: court danasher out there. And also for Giant fans, you'll
- 15:16Speaker 3: want to listen to this, and I know you have
- 15:17Speaker 3: Giants fans listening. We're gonna talk about Todd Monkett, who
- 15:20Speaker 3: very well will he most likely will be Harball's oh see.
