- 0:07On September 30th, 1954, the Cleveland Indians faced the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds for Game 2 of the 1954 World Series.
- 0:15The Giants led the best of seven series, one game to none, and this is the mutual radio broadcast of Game 2 featuring announcers Al Helfer and Jimmy Deadley.
- 0:24The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports is on the air.
- 0:54Good afternoon baseball fans. This is Al Helfer greeting you from the Polo Grounds in New York, where the Cleveland Indians and New York Giants soon will take the field for the second game of the 1954 World Series.
- 1:22Once again, your host is the Gillette Safety Razor Company, which takes pleasure in bringing you this and other great sporting events such as the Football Bowl games and Triple Crown of Racing as our way of saying thank you for using Gillette products.
- 1:37And now for a special pregame treat, we turn the microphone over to a distinguished member of Baseball's Hall of Fame, Frankie Frisch.
- 1:44Frankie's down in the clubhouse, all set to interview Dusty Rhodes and Vic Wirtz. Come in, Frankie Frisch.
- 1:53Good afternoon, friends. Well, it was quite a ball game yesterday. I've been in a lot of World Series games, but that ball game yesterday was a dandy, and nobody left the ballpark until my guest, Dusty Rhodes.
- 2:04Oh, Frank.
- 2:05How are you, Dusty? Hey, what'd you hit off, Bob Lemon? What was that pitch?
- 2:08It was a curveball, Frank.
- 2:10Well, did you hit against him before? Well, only once. It was two years ago, I think it was.
- 2:15What happened?
- 2:16I was called out on strikes.
- 2:18Wait a minute, you were called out on strikes? What'd you do, take three?
- 2:20Took all three of them.
- 2:21Well, how'd you feel yesterday walking up the plate?
- 2:23Well, I used to think you'd been in a lot of these games. I was a little nervous.
- 2:26You're not kidding. The old Flash was really nervous. I mean, did you walk up the plate and say, well, Mr. Lemon, whatever you throw, old Dusty's going to cut and slash, and if it goes, it goes.
- 2:36Where was the pitch, Dusty? High or low? It was low below the belt, away from it.
- 2:41Look, have you changed your stance since you've been in the Polar Browns? We hear so much, they say, oh, that right field fence is short, the left field fence is short.
- 2:48And I was very much interested in what Bobby Fowler said the other day. He said, now look, we had, he's talking about the Cleveland Club, he said we had a lot of chances to hit the ball up in the seats, but we just didn't do it.
- 2:59And the Roach came up and pulled one and there went the ball game. How was it? Well, Frank, I had the same stance as I broke in baseball in 1947. I haven't changed a bit.
- 3:09You're still, you're almost been a pool hitter, right? Always. And Leo sent you up in the right spot. He said, grab a bet you're hitting.
- 3:17You didn't feel any nervous, any nervousness, huh? No. Hey, Dusty, where's your hometown?
- 3:22I think I was born in a little town out in Montgomery, Alabama, Matthews, and I'm staying in Rock Hill, South Carolina now.
- 3:29Hey, did you ever play in that Montgomery ballpark? No, I never did. I saw a Babe Ruth hit one. You know the embankment? They have an embankment out there in left field. It runs from the left field foul line to around the center field.
- 3:39And I saw the three outfielders standing up on that bank and Roach hit one in that Montgomery ballpark and the three outfielders looked like mountain goats chasing his ball and Roach hit.
- 3:48Babe, Babe could have had three home runs on it, but he just, you know, lobbed around the bases and he had a laugh at those three outfielders up and down that.
- 3:55I was in Cranston Bowl, wasn't it Frank? Hey, you hit the name right on the head. That was it.
- 3:59Say, Dusty, I was very much interested in that ball game yesterday. I got a great kick out of it. What was the most interesting play to you yesterday?
- 4:06Well, I thought, Frank, that Catcha Willamette out in Sunnifield with a couple of men on. Oh, that was a terrific play and it saved the ball game. It did.
- 4:12Say, the fellow, he, I thought he was going right up in the center field seats. Never stop. He has no fair offenses. No. Great catch.
- 4:22I'd like to have you take this new Gillette one piece razor set. Now look, back here, this is what I'm interested in. This 1954 Gillette World Series record book.
- 4:35Hey, you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of that. And say, fans, I'd just like to say a few words to the fans listening in.
- 4:43Your favorite store has a special World Series package, razor and book, both for the price of the razor alone. And continued success in this series and keep whacking them.
- 4:54Thank you Frank, I'll always do this. Okay, thanks, Vicki.
- 5:00And our next guest is a fellow that had a terrific day, Vic Wirtz. Vic, nice to have you on our Gillette program.
- 5:06The pleasure to be here, Frankie. Say, what do you got there, young man?
- 5:09This is what is known as a shin guard and, uh, claved my leg quite a bit in my instep also. I have a bad habit of hitting myself in the leg with a foul tip off the bat.
- 5:19Oh, in other words, while you're up hitting and during the game, when you cut at that ball, the foul tip's whacking and they hurt, don't they?
- 5:26And they really hurt, believe me. So that's the reason for this.
- 5:28Can we get a picture? I want to see how Vic puts that on. Now, which foot is it?
- 5:32On the right foot is my front foot being a left-hand hitter. And it goes on exactly like that with the strap coming around the bottom of the foot. That's all there really is to it.
- 5:42Now listen, did you have any trouble with that shin guard yesterday and running the bases?
- 5:46I had a little difficulty, pardon me, on the ball that I hit the right field. Mueller made a throw in the first base.
- 5:52And of course I hurried back to the bag. And when I hit the bag, it was a wild throw. This, uh, snapped unbuckled.
- 5:59When I came in the second base, it was flopping around on my foot. So instead of going to third, I had to stay second.
- 6:04You'll have to get some way of flipping that thing off going down to play space tonight. That might have cost the ball game, right?
- 6:09It could have cost the ball game. And today I'm thinking about leaving it off for the first time in two or three years.
- 6:13Well, now listen, how many hits yesterday, Mr. Wirtz?
- 6:17Well, I, uh, I'll have to figure a little bit. I think it was four, wasn't it?
- 6:20Hey, you know we all, anybody who's ever played the ball game, we always remember those hits.
- 6:25We never remember the strikeouts, right?
- 6:28Never remember the strikeouts.
- 6:29And I still think the hardest ball hit in that ball game went foul. And that's the ball you hit, a left-hand hitter, hitting to the opposite field.
- 6:36That ball was really smack, the one you hit up against the scoreboard in left field. What pitch was that?
- 6:41It was a fast ball, high and away, Frank, and I had to go to left field. Uh, it was away from me. I couldn't try to pull it, so I just tried to slap at the ball.
- 6:48See, the Giants will have to learn how to pitch to you.
- 6:51I hope they don't learn for the next six games.
- 6:53Well, you hit most everything, didn't you? Fast ball, K ball?
- 6:55I think every assortment they had.
- 6:57They tried, I think they tried everything. I even thought they threw a couple of sliders up there.
- 7:01I hit a slider, I hit a curve.
- 7:03Silvik, I got a little gift for you. I know you'll enjoy this. It's a Gillette razor.
- 7:10This is very familiar. I already have one, Frankie, but I can always use another one.
- 7:13Hey, the old flash, use them in the morning.
- 7:15Yes, sir. See, I use them too.
- 7:16I get a kick out of it. And what I like about it, and I'm going to keep talking about it because I get a kick out of it.
- 7:22It's the 1954 World Series record book.
- 7:25And fans, I hope you'll take the old flash's advice and get yours right now, because last year, oh, we had a little tough time.
- 7:34We run out of them, and we've got to get them right now. Don't wait.
- 7:38Vic Rich, thanks kindly for being with us.
- 7:40Thank you, Frankie.
- 7:41Well, fans, it's time to wind up our clubhouse interviews for this afternoon, and now we're going up to the broadcasting booth. Thank you kindly.
- 7:48Good evening. We're ready for the second game of the 1954 World Series between the Cleveland Indians and the New York Giants.
- 7:55And the broadcast this afternoon is authorized under the broadcasting rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball, solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 8:02And any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions or accounts of this game without the express consent of the Commissioner is prohibited.
- 8:09Well, ladies and gentlemen, before the lineup is going to be given to you, I should like to say that due to a special presentation made by the Defense Department here yesterday,
- 8:17and the stepping up of the time schedule in order that the field could be cleared in time for the beginning of the ballgame,
- 8:22we were unable to bring you the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner from this ballpark.
- 8:26However, from today on, throughout the rest of the series, we shall be proud to bring to all our national anthem.
- 8:32And now here are the starting lineup for this afternoon's ballgame for the Cleveland Indians.
- 8:36Leading off will be Al Smith in left field. Hitting number two will be Bobby Avila at second base.
- 8:41The number three hitter in the order will be Larry Dolby in center field.
- 8:44Followed by the number four hitter Al Rosen in center field.
- 8:47Or rather, Al Rosen at third base. Then comes Victor Wirtz at first base.
- 8:51Wally Westlake will be in right field in place of Dave Philly today.
- 8:54He'll hit in the number six position.
- 8:56Strickland in the short stop. Higgin the catcher.
- 8:59And early win will be the pitcher. He has won 23 and 11 with three shutouts this year.
- 9:03Ladies and gentlemen, Barry Como and our national anthem.

- 41:13Back at the Polo Grounds in New York, going into the last half of the second inning, Willie Mays will lead off for the Giants, with the Indians leading by a score of 1-0.
- 41:22Mays batted 345 to win the National League Batting Crown, and in yesterday's ballgame was up three times without a hit.
- 41:32Right hand batter, wins first pitch to him is ball one high and inside.
- 41:44Win is 117 or more ballgames every season since joining the Indians in December of 1948.
- 41:52Second year that he has won 23. Next pitch to Mays is fouled back to the screen out of play and the count is even up, ball one and strike one.
- 42:03Win is a tough pitcher, possessing a good fastball, curve, and the knuckler are what he terms the fingertip pitch. Works the same way that a knuckleball pitch does, but he throws it with the fingertips.
- 42:18The one and one pitch is ball two outside, a curveball breaking away, the count two and one.
- 42:29He's not a fast worker, takes plenty of time in between each pitch, always studying his batter. The outfielders are deep, straight away but far back.
- 42:39Here's the windup in the two-one pitch, Mays backs off from ball three high and inside, the count is now three and one.
- 42:50The line center fielder looking down to Herman Franks coaching at third, leading off here in the last half of the second inning. On deck is Henry Thompson.
- 43:03Just as wind started his windup, Mays stepped out.
- 43:08One and nothing ballgame with the Indians in front, last half of the second.
- 43:12Now in his end of the windup, the three-one pitch, swung on and a flatball is hit into right field, high and far but plenty of room for Westlake. Under it now, he has it.
- 43:21Brought number one, run away.
- 43:28That brings up number 16, Hank Thompson, the third baseman.
- 43:33Thompson batted 263 during the regular season and won out of three yesterday.
- 43:38Giving him a good start of 333 in World Series play.
- 43:44As Bobby Avila said the other day when somebody was asking about his hitting during the regular season, he said, that's all over now, we all start even, the World Series.
- 43:56Egan out with a few words for his pitcher, now back in possession.
- 44:02Went out and nobody on in the last half of the second inning. The outfield pulling around toward right as Thompson steps in, a left-hand batter.
- 44:12First pitch to Thompson is a strike, a fastball working to the outside corner waist-high.
- 44:16Strike one.
- 44:20Playing Thompson to pull, Strickland almost over the second base.
- 44:25Next pitch is way high with a knuckleball and it is now ball one and strike one.
- 44:34Occasionally, that pitch will get away from the best of them.
- 44:40Gwynn takes that slow rocking windup of his. The next pitch is ball two, a fastball high and inside. Turn one to count.
- 44:51Bobby Avila, the second baseman, has moved midway now between first and second, deep to the edge of the outfield grass.
- 44:58Words covering close to the line with a count two and one.
- 45:01Here's the pitch, swung on and a fly ball is hit out into left center, moving over fast as Al Smith. Under it now, he makes the catch.
- 45:09We're at number two, Thompson fried to Al Smith in left center.
- 45:17Coming up is number twenty, Monte Irvin. Here's a boy that hit.458 in the 1951 World Series, as the Gillette World Series record book shows.
- 45:28Coming through this little book, you get a great deal of information.
- 45:33Irvin steps in a right-hand body, crouches over. First pitch is a strike, fastball, letter high.
- 45:42Irvin left fielder, 0 for 3, looking for his first hit.
- 45:48Two out and nobody on. The next pitch is strike two with a curve.
- 45:55Irvin steps out, a little bit surprised as that ball exploded away from him, but caught the corner. Going to the count.
- 46:07And the next pitch is strike three, called with a curveball, letter high. Again, he leaned away from the plate. He's called it on strikes.
- 46:15There is Wim's first strikeout of the game. And for the Giants in the second, no runs, no hits, nothing across.
- 46:23At the end of two, the score is Cleveland 1, New York nothing.
- 46:31And now we pause 10 seconds for station identification. This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 46:39This is WGN Chicago, the Chicago Tribune station, your exclusive World Series station.
- 46:51Back at the Polo Grounds in New York City, the second game of the 1954 World Series.
- 46:57Now I understand that in moving to Cleveland tomorrow, that they are expecting a crowd between 75 and 80,000 for the third game of the World Series.
- 47:05Well, I know this much, Jimmy, that if it's anything like that New York series, New York Yankee Cleveland series we had out there with you fellas,
- 47:13just before the decision was made on the American League planet, we can expect even more than that.
- 47:19Many people have said that it will probably be a record crowd for not only World Series, but also to ever see a baseball game. And I wouldn't be a bit surprised, that might be right.
- 47:27Well, depending on the weather, they have a good chance of setting a new record, Al.
- 47:31And it's a great deal of pleasure and gives us a great deal of pride to be able to sit with the fans on the World Series.
- 47:37We wish that more could see them. However, we hope that you folks all around the world are enjoying our reports.
- 47:43All right, in the first of the third, it'll be Larry Doby leading off. Left-hand batter was called out on strikes in the first inning.
- 47:49First pitch to him as ball went outside.
- 47:57Ball on the count on Larry Doby, Indian center fielder.
- 48:03The sun is still trying to break through occasionally, looks down on us.
- 48:07Here's the windup. The next pitch is ball two, high and inside.
- 48:17Watching this youngster, Antonelli, you can't help but feel that he's a little bit nervous, as undoubtedly all of the boys were in the first game yesterday.
- 48:26The turn-up in pitch. Doby swings and he misses a fastball.
- 48:31He figured right, but Antonelli fired it by. The count is now ball two and strike one.
- 48:38Lots of pepper in the giant infield, Thompson, Doth, Williams, and Loughman talking it up behind their pitcher.
- 48:46Okay, on the sign. The two unpitched. Doby swings, tried to hold back, but it was a fastball strike called.
- 48:54Turn to count. The wind is just the opposite from what it was in yesterday's ballgame, blowing toward left field today.
- 49:07Cross from first to third. The two-two pitch. Doby takes strike three with a fastball to the inside corner.
- 49:13He's called it on strikes. The boy, he knew it. The minute that pitch was in there, he walked quietly away.
- 49:20The sign that he has been called it on strikes. The third strike out for the giant left-hander.
- 49:28He'll give you a battle right down to the wire, that's for sure.
- 49:32Posting a record of 21-7 during the regular season.
- 49:36Al Rosen now steps in. He walked in the first inning. Swings on the first pitch and hits a ground ball past the pitcher.
- 49:41Doth moves over, third second is up with it. The third or first, another nice play. Rosen is out.
- 49:47Oh, that dot really showing you how to play that position. Rosen grounding out, dot to Lachman, 6-3.
- 49:57Two up and two down and the batter is number 23, Vic Wirtz. He drew a base on balls in the first inning.
- 50:11Now the outfielders are pulling around toward right with nobody on and two out.
- 50:18Antonelli started the windup, now pauses and goes back to the Rosen bag.
- 50:25Two out, here's the windup. The first pitch to Wirtz. He takes ball one, low into the dirt. Good stop by West Westman.
- 50:36Second game of the 1954 World Series. The Giants won the first, 5-2. The Indians leading this one, 1-0, first half of the third.
- 50:45The next pitch, Wirtz swings and hits a line drive out of a second base into center field on the hop, going out to way maze.
- 50:51Wirtz holding up it first on the throw to the infield.
- 50:56And there is his fifth hit in World Series play. This being his first World Series.
- 51:08So it gives him five out of six. Certainly has the fans buzzing.
- 51:16Now stepping into the batter's box is Wally Westlake. In the first inning he's singled into center field.
- 51:27Right hand batter.
- 51:35Wirtz on first.
- 51:38Blockman holding against him with two out.
- 51:42Here's the stretch. First pitch to Westlake is ball one high and outside.
- 51:50A lot of people have asked about the little shin guard that Wirtz wears on his right leg.
- 51:56Looks like an abbreviated catcher's shin guard. He wears it to protect his instep from the foul tips. Always foul the ball on his foot.
- 52:04Next pitch to Westlake is ball two, a fastball high and inside.
- 52:09Two and no count. With two out in the first half of the third inning.
- 52:19On deck is George Strickland.
- 52:24Antonelli okays the sign, checks the runner. The pitch is high for ball three. Three and no count.
- 52:35Notice that he's been having a little trouble with the curveball and his change up.
- 52:40Again Jim Hearn goes to work down in the giant bullpen. Leo DeRoscia taking no chances.
- 52:47Wants to have a man ready to rush him there in case they should need him. Even with two out a lot can happen.
- 52:54The Indians lead one to nothing the first of the third. The next pitch is ball four outside.
- 52:59He missed with a curveball. Westlake takes the walk. Wirtz moves to second.
- 53:05Third base on balls given up by Antonelli and the batter is George Strickland.
- 53:18Strickland came up in the first inning with the bases loaded, two out and popped to the first baseman, Whitey Lockman.
- 53:29Doesn't hit often but he has come through with some very timely bases.
- 53:34Runners on first and second. Moving off ready to travel. The first pitch is bowed. Pulled far down the left field line into the crowd.
- 53:47Count is strike one.
- 53:55Wirtz on second. Westlake on first.
- 53:59Hartfield is playing Strickland straight away. Antonelli is up with the stretch.
- 54:05The next pitch is swung on a ground ball hit to the shortstop. Dark is up with it. Throws over to Williams at second forcing Westlake and the side is retired.
- 54:13Strickland hitting into a force play. Westlake is out at second, six-four.
- 54:19So in the third inning for the Indians, no runs. One hit, one walk and two men were left.
- 54:26And going into the last half of the third inning the score is Cleveland one, New York nothing.
- 54:33And our fans here is veteran first sacker Mickey Vernon of the Washington Nets. A slick dependable fielder.
- 54:39Mickey's twice won the American League batting crown. Say Mickey, how about this game as a career?
- 54:44Baseball has been good to me Jimmy. A young man with talent can have a good life in the game.
- 54:49And Mickey, how about that further word for the younger fellows?
- 54:52This is important for young men and some older ones too. I guess everybody wants to be successful and as a starter you've got to look neat and really clean as if you think something of yourself.
- 55:02You certainly have got to look well shaved. For me that means to use the Gillette razor.
- 55:06And that's it Mickey and many thanks to you. Mickey uses the Gillette super speed razor that shaves you clean in a breeze.
- 55:13One dollar complete with blue blade dispenser and travel case. Right now you get the World Series record book free.
- 55:25And now we go into the last half of the third inning here at the Polo Grounds.
- 55:29Leading off for the Giants is Davy Williams, the second baseman.
- 55:37Williams was up four times in yesterday's ball game but went hitless.
- 55:44Probably wondering what's happened to these Indian pitches in spring training when he hit them as if he owned them.
- 55:50Right hand batter, the little fellows in there waiting went into the windup.
- 55:54First pitch is fouled back to the screen. Strike one.
- 56:07Strike one to count. Williams leading off in the last of the third.
- 56:10The Indians out in front by a score of one to nothing.
- 56:15When okays the sign, works into the windup.
- 56:17The pitch is strike two with a curve.
- 56:20Going down and away from a right hand batter. The counties strike two.
- 56:26No giant runner has reached bases yet. On deck is Wes Westrom.
- 56:34The 0-2 pitch. A swing and a miss. Hagan drops the ball but picks it up.
- 56:37Tags Williams before he can get more than three feet away.
- 56:41Williams goes down swinging. Second strike out for Wynn.
- 56:47And it brings up the giant catcher Wes Westrom.
- 56:50He surprised a lot of people yesterday with his hitting.
- 56:53After batting only 187 during the regular season, he had two for four.
- 56:57And the two outs were line drives, one of them into right center that Larry Doby pulled down to rob him of a base hit.
- 57:06So Westrom is off to a good start with a 500 batting average for the first day's play.
- 57:11One out and nobody on. The first pitch to him is ball one high and inside.
- 57:20Again the skies are clear above us.
- 57:25Fast to the third with one out and nobody on. Here's the windup.
- 57:28The next pitch. Westrom swings and he misses.
- 57:32Good long stroke boy. He was going for the long one.
- 57:35Ball one and strike one the count.
- 57:44Al Smith, the Indians left fielder, deep and straight away.
- 57:49Wynn's next pitch is ball two high. The count, ball two and strike one.
- 57:56Al Smith in left field, Larry Doby in center, Wally Westlake in right.
- 58:01Rosen, Strickland, Avila and Wirtz the infield.
- 58:07The Indians lead by a score of one to nothing as a result of Al Smith's leadoff home run.
- 58:11The first pitch of the ball game.
- 58:15Now Westrom steps back into the batter's box with a count ball two and strike one.
- 58:19Here's the windup.
- 58:21The two on pitch is fouled back to the screen out of play.
- 58:24Even up count two and two.
- 58:34Ball two and strike two. A new ball tossed into play.
- 58:38Smith's home run was one that cleared the roof right on the foul line in the left field.
- 58:46Alright the two to pitch. Fouled back to the screen and Westrom is still alive with a count two and two.
- 58:52That was back into the press box where writers from all over the country are working today's ball game.
- 59:04Turn to count.
- 59:10Wynn's windup and the two to pitch. Pulled foul down the third base line out of play.
- 59:21Mike Garcia, the Indians right hander, has been announced as the try pitcher for tomorrow's game.
- 59:29The third game of the World Series which will be played at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium.
- 59:33Leo DeRosha has stated he will announce his starting pitcher after today's game.
- 59:39Next pitch to Westrom is ball three outside and low and the string is out.
- 59:44Full count of three and two.
- 59:49Wynn was hoping to get one to the outside corner but knee high but missed by a shade.
- 59:54And it is now three and two.
- 1:00:01One big pitch left. Three off pitch.
- 1:00:03Swung on and a foul ball hit deep out into left center.
- 1:00:06Al Smith racing back. Moved under and now knee has it.
- 1:00:09We're out number two. Westrom.
- 1:00:13Fired to Al Smith in left center. And that brings up the pitcher, Johnny Antonelli.
- 1:00:24Watching these batters strive to hit one toward left center, center and right center.
- 1:00:29No one will ever knock a home run out of this park in dead center field, that's for sure.
- 1:00:34The Gillette World Series record book shows it's the toughest home run value in the majors.
- 1:00:38475 feet from the plate and 60 feet high.
- 1:00:44It's a long throw out there toward that center field wall.
- 1:00:48Antonelli, a left-hander all the way, steps in, takes ball one. First pitch outside.
- 1:00:58Speaking of long ball hitters, Antonelli has had two home runs here in this ball park during the regular season.
- 1:01:06Two out and nobody on. Next pitch swings and quotes it. Foul down the first base line.
- 1:01:11Words moving over to people of all but foul. Out of play.
- 1:01:16Ball one and strike one.
- 1:01:27The Indians out in front by a score of one to nothing. Two out for the Giants.
- 1:01:31One okays the sign from catcher Jim Higgins. The one and one pitch, Antonelli swings and hits a high five ball into right field.
- 1:01:37Westlake moving in, waiting for it now. And he has it. The side is right.
- 1:01:42As again the Giants put down an order. No runs, no hits. Nothing across.
- 1:01:48And at the end of three the score is Cleveland one, New York nothing.
- 1:01:58And now we head into the first half of the fourth inning here at the football grounds of New York.
- 1:02:02The Indians leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:02:05Speaking of that long center field wall here at the football grounds, and if there's a mighty clout, I think there's just one ball player.
- 1:02:12I hope I can back me up on this. Joe Adcock I believe, Al, hit one of those left center field bleachers, didn't he?
- 1:02:19Yeah, he hit one out into the left center field bleachers, but there was also a story out, and I believe it to be true,
- 1:02:25that the big part of the unit by first base for the Cleveland Indians when he was in the Negro League hit one into the right center field stands here.
- 1:02:32You know who I mean, don't you? Yep, Big Luke Eastlake. That's right.
- 1:02:34One of those right center field bleachers. That's quite a poke, Jimmy. I doubt you're going to see it very often.
- 1:02:39That's it, Joe. Hank Lieber, the one-time Giants player, 1937 series, hit one back there in the well, which to my mind will pull down in the shadow.
- 1:02:47That marker says 483. Now we head into the first of the fourth. Jim Hegan is the lead off batter.
- 1:02:55Antonelli's first pitch to him is ball one outside and low.
- 1:02:59For the double in the second inning, it was sacrificed to third, but left-handed as Smith and Navila went down for the fine pitching of Johnny Antonelli.
- 1:03:08Here's the windup. Next pitch, Hegan swings, a follow-zip out into right center. Maze is traveling, going, still under it.
- 1:03:15That's it. That's good catch. They turn for the better. And they love it.
- 1:03:27Yes, sir, he really controls that garden.
- 1:03:33That'll bring up the pitchers.
- 1:03:35One out and nobody on in the first half of the inning.
- 1:03:49When the teams move to Clinton at Hewidge Outer Garden, a municipal stadium, we should see some great plays. We've seen them here.
- 1:03:57A chance ought to measure Maze and Larry Doak, two great center fielder. Early wind, batting right, swings on the first pitch, foul to the screen, strike one.
- 1:04:07Strike one to count. The Indians today have left six men on the bases. And yesterday in the last three innings, they left seven on.
- 1:04:28Next pitch in the wind, he swings and fouls another one down the right field line, up the stands. Strike two.
- 1:04:42Going to the count, one out, nobody on, a new ball is thrown into play. The umpire back of the plate, Charlie Berry, the American League umpiring staff.
- 1:04:52It's what's here in New York, hot, humid day. Ball players are really getting plenty of opportunity to perspire, or as they say, sweat.
- 1:05:05Going to the count, one out, and the next pitch, wind swings and he misses.
- 1:05:12Ashton dropped the ball, picked it up quickly and tacked him, and it is the fourth back out for Antonelli. And nobody on the bases.
- 1:05:22Brings up the lead off batter, Al Smith. Two extremes in the first inning, he hit a home run on the first pitch.
- 1:05:30Second inning, Antonelli struck him out on a back ball. The Indians lead one to nothing.
- 1:05:38Here's the wind up and the first pitch to Smith, ball one high and inside.
- 1:05:48On deck is Bobby Avila. The Indians have a total of four hits.
- 1:05:54The giant runner has reached for a hit off early wind.
- 1:05:59There is a strike, a curve ball dropping over knee high, and the count is even up, ball one and strike one.
- 1:06:06The wind is a little stronger now. Of course, it is hard to clear the skies.
- 1:06:15Make way for today's ball game. It certainly didn't look like it this morning.
- 1:06:19The one and one pitch, ball two, outside. The count is two and one.
- 1:06:25Antonelli has four strikes.
- 1:06:30And there's walk three men.
- 1:06:34Ball two and strike one on Al Smith. The Indians left.
- 1:06:38Double run kick wind up by Antonelli.
- 1:06:41On on, pull foul, down pass, third base.
- 1:06:44Puccinello, the little round man coaching at third for the Indians.
- 1:06:48Made a pass out of it, but a side to the left.
- 1:06:51Little fellow that has played a lot of bases this time.
- 1:06:55He posted a lifetime value of around $287.
- 1:07:00Turn to the count on the batter.
- 1:07:04Two out and nobody on the bases.
- 1:07:07Antonelli, what?
- 1:07:09Antonelli, it's into the wind up.
- 1:07:11The pitch is rung on foul, into the upper deck of the left field, feets.
- 1:07:15Long strike and quite a scramble, but the fans up there for a souvenir.
- 1:07:20A man scramble for a $2.50, a $85 suit, but get that ball.
- 1:07:35Ball two, strike to the count.
- 1:07:45Antonelli in action.
- 1:07:49The fastball is inside and low.
- 1:07:51Ball three, and it's a pro count now, three and two.
- 1:07:55And notice the pitcher has been shaking off the catcher.
- 1:07:59Antonelli has done it, I think, once or twice.
- 1:08:03Wind has no sign that the Indians can see any of us in the fastball fans and weights.
- 1:08:10The three to pitch inside and low, and Smith takes the base on.
- 1:08:16That is the fourth walk given up by Antonelli.
- 1:08:20Four walks, four strikeouts, he's got four hits.
- 1:08:24But he's been effective when the chips were on the table.
- 1:08:29Again, there are two out and the Indians have a runner on first.
- 1:08:34That'll bring Bobby Avila.
- 1:08:37Avila now has one and six, has been to bat six times yesterday, up four times yesterday,
- 1:08:47had one hit, up five times yesterday.
- 1:08:50So it's one out of seven.
- 1:08:53Bored one of the Indians to run yesterday's game.
- 1:08:57Avila came up with a well-deserved victory.
- 1:09:04Two out, runner on first, the pitcher hits fastball one a fastball high enough time.
- 1:09:11Smith on first, one of the American-bearing baserunners playing fast,
- 1:09:18quick to take advantage of a break, and he laps on the part of an outfielder.
- 1:09:25Three times during the season, went from first to third on a sack front by Avila.
- 1:09:32Avila swings and there's a hard swing, a hit quickly knocked down by Thompson.
- 1:09:38The throw to second and Smith is out, a beautiful play.
- 1:09:48Thompson coming up with a well-deserved stop on Avila's hard smack into left field.
- 1:09:54A great play for Thompson.
- 1:09:56Smith is fourth, third baseman is second baseman, five-four.
- 1:10:02So for the Indians in the first half, runs no hits.
- 1:10:05One man left.
- 1:10:07And going into the last half of the fourth inning, for his Cleveland one, nothing.
- 1:10:13Fans on the Indians today is Bob Feller in the 17th year at the McEntyre.
- 1:10:19You know he had to say the other day that I think that it stands.
- 1:10:22Here's how he put it. When I'm bushed, he says, shave makes me feel like a new man.
- 1:10:27An old super speed racer doesn't feel plenty good.
- 1:10:31He's handy, one piece, and chains blades and a jiffy.
- 1:10:35A quick rinse cleans it.
- 1:10:37He's with Blue Blade.
- 1:10:40Speed goes for Justin.
- 1:10:42The new bigger than ever World Series record.
- 1:10:45Blue to three. Let us know how they last. Add to your baseball enjoyment now and all year round.
- 1:10:57And now it's the last of the fourth and the fans here at the Philadelphia Harvest are calling for a little action on the part of the Giants.
- 1:11:03White lock with his feet off man, the top of the batting order.
- 1:11:06First pick, white, four, one inside.
- 1:11:11Win as retired, nine in a row.
- 1:11:16Going through.
- 1:11:18He's even won.
- 1:11:20He ought nothing.
- 1:11:22Alvin Dark on deck.
- 1:11:24Dugton moves in in case of a run.
- 1:11:26The next pitch is ball two, outside.
- 1:11:28Two and no count.
- 1:11:38All to no strikes.
- 1:11:41Indian right hander.
- 1:11:43Pitch is a strike.
- 1:11:44Fastball, waste time.
- 1:11:46Ball two and strike one.
- 1:11:51He's a great competitor this win.
- 1:11:55Here's the sign from his catcher.
- 1:11:57The two on pitch, Loughman's right.
- 1:11:59And fouls and up clear back to the screen.
- 1:12:06He's a great match win a lot of times even with a knuckleball.
- 1:12:09Have a count of ball three now with a nut on a certain batter.
- 1:12:11He wants to get him up with a nut.
- 1:12:12He stays right with it.
- 1:12:14He recalls the time that he was ball from Yogi Barrow.
- 1:12:17In the count of three no strikes.
- 1:12:18Struck him out.
- 1:12:19Knuckleball pitches.
- 1:12:22Here's the foul.
- 1:12:23Loughman swings and throws it.
- 1:12:25Down the first baseline.
- 1:12:29Ready Fitzsimmons.
- 1:12:31Out of the way.
- 1:12:33Ball two and strike to the count.
- 1:12:43Last half of the fourth.
- 1:12:44The Indians beat a high score of one to nothing.
- 1:12:46There's the wind up and the two to pitch.
- 1:12:48Wings and he misses.
- 1:12:49He's struck out.
- 1:12:52Coming up now is Alvin Dowd.
- 1:12:54Nobody on.
- 1:12:55Right now, ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:12:58This is Mitchell.
- 1:13:00The radio network for all of us.
- 1:13:03WNN, your World Service Station in Chicago.
- 1:13:13And now Dowd steps in with nobody on.
- 1:13:16First pitch is a strike.
- 1:13:18Then getting the outback corner with a good curveball.
- 1:13:25Second game of the 1950s.
- 1:13:30Next pitch is Bob Lemon.
- 1:13:33One and one to count.
- 1:13:37The Indians broke on top by taking the first two.
- 1:13:39Beating Bob Lemon.
- 1:13:41Yesterday, Winn and Alvin Alley going in the number two game today.
- 1:13:48I feel it straight away but deep in all feet.
- 1:13:51Next pitch is a strike with a fastball.
- 1:13:53And of course, you win with that knuckleball.
- 1:13:58That ball seems even faster.
- 1:14:03One and two count.
- 1:14:05The pitch is swung on a ground ball.
- 1:14:06A short stop.
- 1:14:07Big hop taken by the first in time.
- 1:14:09Dark is out.
- 1:14:10There are two gone.
- 1:14:12And coming up now is number 22.
- 1:14:15Don Muto.
- 1:14:16He's two for two in this.
- 1:14:18You know, he was number two man this year and had a solid three for last year.
- 1:14:22For passback performances of all players, check the great new Gillette World Series record.

- 1:14:33Take it to the right.
- 1:14:36Two out and nobody on.
- 1:14:38Kneel down. Left hand bat to swing down.
- 1:14:39Pouch and close one.
- 1:14:41Foul.
- 1:14:42That was a right field line into the seats.
- 1:14:43Out of play.
- 1:14:49A thrill for the fans in that direction.
- 1:14:52A foul ball.
- 1:14:53Just a long strike.
- 1:14:55Wide.
- 1:14:56When's next pitch?
- 1:14:57Wide one count.
- 1:14:58A great football one.
- 1:14:59One and one count.
- 1:15:01The end is complete.
- 1:15:02This is the last of the fourth.
- 1:15:03We begin feeding by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:15:07Kneel down.
- 1:15:08Up.
- 1:15:09Kneel down.
- 1:15:10Up in the first inning.
- 1:15:11Grounded out.
- 1:15:12Second to first.
- 1:15:13Two out and nobody on.
- 1:15:15There are two out and nobody on.
- 1:15:16Okay.
- 1:15:17We'll change the sign.
- 1:15:20A fastball swung on a flat ball.
- 1:15:22Right field.
- 1:15:23Westlake moving over.
- 1:15:24He has it.
- 1:15:25And the pack is retired.
- 1:15:28A giant players have gone down.
- 1:15:33No hit.
- 1:15:34And not a giant man has reached first.
- 1:15:36At the end of four innings.
- 1:15:38The score is three and one.
- 1:15:40New York nothing.

- 1:16:38The Indians leading the Giants one to nothing here at the Polo grounds.
- 1:16:42The first inning of Indians.
- 1:16:43Al Lopez the manager of the tribe had a visit today.
- 1:16:46We got quite a kick out of watching the ceremony.

- 1:17:31Outfield is around toward right.
- 1:17:32The next pitch.
- 1:17:33Dolby swings and hits a fireball.
- 1:17:34Needs to went out into short left field.
- 1:17:36Coming in fast is Monty Irvin.
- 1:17:37He's under it now and makes the catch.
- 1:17:39He got a late start but caught up with it for the out.
- 1:17:47That brings up Al Rosen.
- 1:17:49Indian third baseman.
- 1:17:51Has a walk to show in two trips.
- 1:17:57First half of the fifth inning.
- 1:17:59This ball game really moving along.
- 1:18:03Antonelli's wind up.
- 1:18:05First pitch. Rosen takes ball one inside and low.
- 1:18:10The only run of the game came in the first inning.
- 1:18:12And Al Smith, Indians leadoff batter, hit the first pitch.
- 1:18:15Over the left field roof.
- 1:18:19Next pitch to Rosen.
- 1:18:20He swings and hits one through the hole into right field.
- 1:18:22A base hit.
- 1:18:23Hitting to the opposite field between second and first.
- 1:18:26Rosen is on first now.
- 1:18:29With hit number five for the Tribe.
- 1:18:36That is his second hit of the World Series.
- 1:18:39One out.
- 1:18:40A runner on first and Vic Wirtz steps in.
- 1:18:42He has a walk and a single.
- 1:18:46And certainly has the highest average of all of the players in the series thus far.
- 1:18:56Wirtz is batting 8.33 at the present time.
- 1:18:59Yesterday's game and today's.
- 1:19:04One out.
- 1:19:08First pitch to him. He takes a strike.
- 1:19:10Fast ball by him.
- 1:19:12About knee high.
- 1:19:18Antonelli showing the stuff that made him one of the best pitchers in baseball during the year.
- 1:19:23He'll work carefully on him.
- 1:19:28Next pitch to Wirtz is a foul hit into the stands.
- 1:19:31Off to the left of the plate. Out of play. Strike two.
- 1:19:34That one going far into the upper deck.
- 1:19:40The Indians have had runners on base in every inning of the game but have been unable to score.
- 1:19:46They left three men on in the first.
- 1:19:48One in the second. Two in the third. And left one in the fourth.
- 1:19:52They now have a total of five hits and Antonelli has walked four batters.
- 1:19:58But he's had it in the tights front.
- 1:20:02First time he has a runner on first with one out in the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:20:06Here's the stretch.
- 1:20:07Look to the runner at first.
- 1:20:09The pitch is swung in and there's a fireball in the left field.
- 1:20:12And moving back is under it now. He has it for up number two.
- 1:20:22Antonelli pulled the string onward. Gave him a change up.
- 1:20:26He hit it to the opposite field. Fireball to Monty Urban.
- 1:20:29That brings up Wally Wetchley. A single in the first inning.
- 1:20:33He walked in the third.
- 1:20:36Right hand batter.
- 1:20:39Indian teammates call him the beast.
- 1:20:42He's powerfully built.
- 1:20:44First pitch is a fastball blazed through the middle. Strike one call.
- 1:20:50Throws in on first with two out in the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:21:00Strike one to count. Throws in and takes a short lead.
- 1:21:04Next pitch is wide of the plate. Bow one.
- 1:21:07One and one. The count is even up.
- 1:21:17Batter on deck is George Strickland.
- 1:21:20Antonelli tugging at his cap.
- 1:21:22Notting vigorously to his catcher Wes Westrom on the sign.
- 1:21:26One and one pitch. Hit foul down the third baseline.
- 1:21:30This has been fielded by Tony Cucinello.
- 1:21:38Bow one and strike to the count of the batter.
- 1:21:46The Indians leading by a score of one to nothing as a result of Al Smith's home run.
- 1:21:51Antonelli checks the runner.
- 1:21:53The next pitch is low into the dirt.
- 1:21:55Down step and hit Wetchley. Rosen holding it first.
- 1:21:58The count is now even. Ball two and strike two.
- 1:22:01Rosen will not take any chances on the bases.
- 1:22:04Not with that leg, which is still a little lame.
- 1:22:09It's a matter of a torn muscle in the thigh.
- 1:22:16Turn to count.
- 1:22:19Antonelli now steps onto the rubber.
- 1:22:23Outfielders deep and around toward left.
- 1:22:25The two pitch. Ball three. Over but too low with a curveball and the string is out.
- 1:22:31Full count of three and two.
- 1:22:34And now with two out, Rosen will be on the move.
- 1:22:38Witte Lachman with the right hand batter up.
- 1:22:41Moves to first base to hold him.
- 1:22:46Westlake single in the first inning was in the center field right through the middle.
- 1:22:49In the third.
- 1:22:52Three and two count.
- 1:22:56Shake off on the sign. Antonelli okay on the next.
- 1:23:00The three to pitch. A swing and a miss. He struck him out.
- 1:23:05Strikeout number five for Johnny Antonelli.
- 1:23:10Boy, this is a real humdinger.
- 1:23:13Westlake goes down swinging and for the Indians in the fifth.
- 1:23:16No runs. One hit. One man left.
- 1:23:19Going into the last half of the fifth inning the score is Cleveland one.
- 1:23:22New York nothing.

- 1:23:59Last year's edition went before we knew it.
- 1:24:02This year's enlarged book is going even faster.
- 1:24:04So you better hurry.
- 1:24:09And our fans here at the Polo Grounds in New York the second game of the 1954 World Series going into the last half of the fifth inning the score is Cleveland one.
- 1:24:17New York Giants nothing.
- 1:24:19Now to take over and carry on the rest of this broadcast here is Mitchell's Al Helper.
- 1:24:24Al come in.
- 1:24:25All right Jimmy one down in the series.
- 1:24:27I'm going to score one to nothing right now in favor of the Indians.
- 1:24:29They're trying to even it up and hold their perfect World Series record.
- 1:24:32You know they've won two World Series and lost none.
- 1:24:34Well let's see what happens.
- 1:24:35Old man tough is out on the mound for the Cleveland Indians this afternoon early win.
- 1:24:39He's pitching on Willie May.
- 1:24:41Comes in with an overhand fastball and Willie who is over one leans back and takes that fastball off the shoulder for ball one.
- 1:24:47Willie Mays came up in the second inning sent a fly ball to right field it was gathered in by Wally Westlake.
- 1:24:52And in day fairness over reporting we should tell you that the Giants have had no base runners in this one so far.
- 1:24:58There's a curve ball.
- 1:24:59Willie partially swung on and enough to have it called a strike against him.
- 1:25:03One ball and one strike on Willie Mays who is 0 for 4 in series play so far this year.
- 1:25:09They went 0 for 3 yesterday and 0 for 1 this afternoon.
- 1:25:13Early win the Ole Macomis right hander delivers a pitch high that almost gets away from Higgin and that'll be ball two.
- 1:25:18That's it this win has really been mowing them down.
- 1:25:22It isn't that Johnny Antonelli isn't pitching a good ball game.
- 1:25:26He is he's pitching a fine ball game but early win just happens to be pitching one a little bit better.
- 1:25:30Win the barrel chested right hander Cleveland.
- 1:25:34Very serious face fellow takes his sign from Higgin looks down at Willie Mays the right hander pitches to him a fastball right end of the pin.
- 1:25:40That's ball three.
- 1:25:42Three balls and one strike.
- 1:25:43It's a one to nothing ball game in favor of the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:25:46They have one run five hits off Johnny Antonelli.
- 1:25:49One of the five hits was the first pitch ball.
- 1:25:51Al Smith tagged it over the left field wall for a home run.
- 1:25:56A lot of curve ball Mays is outside the ball for and there's the first man to get on base for the New York Giants this afternoon.
- 1:26:02The first base on balls to be given up by early win.
- 1:26:06Now everybody I don't know whether this will have anything to do with the record book or not and I doubt whether we could find it.
- 1:26:11But I'm almost sure it might be.
- 1:26:13On two successive pitch balls by two different pitchers two home runs were the results.
- 1:26:18If you'll go back to yesterday's ball game the first pitch ball Dusty Rhodes hit it into the right field stands for a three run home run to win the ball game for the Giants.
- 1:26:25And today Al Smith stepped up and teed off on the first pitch hit by a film by Johnny Antonelli hit it over the left field for a home run.
- 1:26:33Here's Hank Thompson up now.
- 1:26:34He's all for one applied to left field in the second inning.
- 1:26:37Take first pitch and five for ball one.
- 1:26:43Well amazed the only base runner he has the only stolen base in the series so far so yesterday if you recall.
- 1:26:48He's on it first word told the inside corner.
- 1:26:51When Jackson now the one and all pitch the play down it comes Thompson backs off and takes a fastball over the inside corner off the hands for called strike.
- 1:27:02Hank Thompson is one for four batting a two fifty right now in the entire World Series play so far he's had one for three yesterday to post a batting average of three thirty three at the start of the ballgame.
- 1:27:13Thompson standing deep at the plate holds that bat way down with a knob a little color swings and gets a lot of power in it.
- 1:27:19When Jackson's run away may break back off the mound and bluff will be back in the first base.
- 1:27:24The outfield for Thompson is spanned around the right and playing deep particularly while I was like in right field he's playing back very deep back to the center track here at the ground as the sun breaks out again when pitches an overhand curveball it's inside.
- 1:27:36That's ball to.
- 1:27:40Two balls one strike on Hank Thompson Herman Frank some time third but known as the Thompson and for the base runner Willie Mays. This is the first opportunity the Giants have had a man on the bases and we'll see how carefully early win pitches here with a man on.
- 1:27:56Bobby available deep in the hole between first and second with this left hand hitter up there.
- 1:28:00Al Rosen playing a shallow third.
- 1:28:15The misty haze hanging over the ground.
- 1:28:38In the fifth inning finally the Giants then the pitching of early win they get the first base hit often.
- 1:28:46Whether that question third and dusty road is coming up to the plate.
- 1:28:51The guy who sent that home run into the right field stands yesterday on the first pitch in the 10th inning.
- 1:28:57The road is batting for money oven.
- 1:29:15Well here's the guy who is the undoing of Bob lemon who pitched a very brilliant ball game here for Cleveland yesterday.
- 1:29:21He was the undoing of Bob lemon and he's been sent up against early win here this afternoon the tying run for the Giants on that third base.
- 1:29:29It's one to nothing ball game.
- 1:29:31Second is open nobody out and early win is in trouble.
- 1:29:37That's the road coming up to the plate batting 1000 in the series.
- 1:29:42First pitch joined the left hand hitter swings on there's a high foul ball hit off the first base line was coming over I doubt he can get to it he can't.
- 1:29:48He's out of play.
- 1:29:51The first pitch yesterday in the right field stands in the bottom of the 10th inning with two men aboard to get the Giants a five to two surprising win here at the Polo ground.
- 1:29:59And it's being called upon again by the county manager Leo de Rocher to see what they can do about facing early win.
- 1:30:06Well it may be playing a very safely at third base not taking much of a lead.
- 1:30:10I'm holding blue pretty much the first with words on the inside corner field around right needless to say playing deep early when ready delivers fastball and right down into the dirt.
- 1:30:19Go stuffy road that ball flips in off the cap.
- 1:30:23One ball and one strike to count on road.
- 1:30:26Why you got the fans buzzing here at the Polo grounds now.
- 1:30:32The roads digging in he's a big fellow left hand hitter stands just off the plate holds up that way down with the.
- 1:30:40Checked his runners delivers one and one of the play the fastball swing on the miss first strike.
- 1:30:45Just it was really after it was no question at all what he had in the back of his mind.
- 1:30:50One ball two strikes on dusty road.
- 1:30:53Last half of any number five the Giants with runners at first and third as they finally cracked into early win service.
- 1:31:00When what may is made then going all the way around a third when Hank Thompson rifled a single in the right field.
- 1:31:07Rosen bluffing over to third to keep early mays close as when steps up on the rubber.
- 1:31:11The count on dusty roads pinch batting from on the urban is one ball and two strikes.
- 1:31:16Well history repeat itself.
- 1:31:18Let's see when settles down into position hesitates.
- 1:31:22Where's back delivers a plate road swings there's a high foul ball hit back to the screen.
- 1:31:26The count of play the cover means one ball and two strikes.
- 1:31:31We said a few minutes ago despite the fact the sun is now out here at the Polo grounds.
- 1:31:36They're sort of a murky haze hanging over the city of New York makes it particularly difficult.
- 1:31:42When the sun is gone.
- 1:31:45See the ball too well for said Jimmy told you the lights can be turned on in World Series play at any time now when a set runners at first and third nobody out.
- 1:31:53When comes a pitch road swings it's a pop fly in the center field.
- 1:31:56He's going to have to hurry comes on.
- 1:31:57They can't get to the base here.
- 1:31:59When he makes comes in there to throw the third time and slides he's safe.
- 1:32:02He goes back to a beater and road gets down to second on the throw in.
- 1:32:22The road to bat it in three runs yesterday for the New York Giants has just batted one in today.
- 1:32:30So that'll give him four runs batted in that ties up the ball game here in the last half of fifth inning when he may is coming in to score from third base easily.
- 1:32:41And on the bullpen very quickly for the Cleveland Indians Don Mossy the left hander and Raynor Leslie the right hander jump up and start to get heated up.
- 1:32:50So Rhoads is on at second base taking second on the throw in which tried to catch Thompson as he moved over on that dunk single in the second fin to center field move all the way around from second on in the third base.
- 1:33:04And 47 times at bat as a pinch hitter Dusty Rhoads now has delivered 17 times this year.
- 1:33:09That means percentage of about 360 and that's pretty tough.
- 1:33:13David Williams up there now with the infield drawn in tight takes the first pitch from early wind fired in their high for ball one.
- 1:33:19All locked up here at one apiece.
- 1:33:22The New York Giants and the Cleveland Indians they've got the hammers out there going this afternoon.
- 1:33:27Runners at second and third first is open the Cleveland infield is drawn in tight early wind with his back against the wall Reyes back delivers to David Williams a pitch a swung on there's a high foul ball hit off the first base line.
- 1:33:37Big words digging over to the stands he cannot get it's unplayable.
- 1:33:42Way back into the crowd.
- 1:33:44One ball and one strike is the count on David Williams.
- 1:33:47Here in the last half of the fifth inning the Giants have scored one time to tie it up.
- 1:33:52They've gotten only two hits off early when both of the hits having come here in the last half of any number five.
- 1:33:58Mays who was locked brings back to mind that old adage to walk the first man in an inning is fatal when delivers the plate now to Williams.
- 1:34:06It's a fastball high ball to two balls and one strike.
- 1:34:11David almost went for that pitch when out there perspiring trying to drive his hand.
- 1:34:19There's Hank Thompson stepping down on third dusty roads moves off second when pitches the plate.
- 1:34:25It's a fast curve inside the ball three.
- 1:34:30Three balls one strike to count on David Williams batting number seven in the Giants order Williams has been up once today came up in the third inning and struck out.
- 1:34:39One of the three strikeouts fun here this afternoon by the Cleveland right hander Thompson hugging very close to third with Rosen very close to hold him on the pitch of the plate to Williams a swing on a foul tip.
- 1:34:51So he had the green light on the three one pitch now three to it's one right on the foul right back into the mask of Jim Higgins.
- 1:35:00Ben Texas cap off on the mound rises for it steps up kicks dirt scrapes his cleats along the pitchers rubber and feels still playing up tight.
- 1:35:13Now the pitch is played on the three to count Williams swings as a high powerball coming right up over our microphones.
- 1:35:18I don't think anyone's going to get to that.
- 1:35:22One to remaining is the count on young David Williams with first base open nobody out giant runners at second and third dusty roads coming in as a pinch batter from Monte urban dumping Texas Laker in the center field to drive in the tying run.
- 1:35:38Give him four runs batted into the series of the six that have been hit in with the Giants when delivers three and two of the fastball is over for called strike three.
- 1:35:45So Williams goes out of there.
- 1:35:47And early when I hang up strikeout number four coming up to the plate now is West West from a super five and World Series play.
- 1:35:57And in this ball game is over one game up in the third inning hit a ball well but headed out into left field where Al Smith was able to range off to his left and make the catch.
- 1:36:06Time has been called for the moment while Al Rosen talks to his pitcher early when he turns and cuts back toward third base.
- 1:36:14The situation here in the last half of fifth inning one out for the Giants Hank Thompson is on the third dusty roads who batted for Monte urban and delivered a pinch single to drive in the tying runners on its second and first base is open.
- 1:36:26And West Western up there.
- 1:36:28The first pitch to us is high and outside fastball almost got away from Hagen one ball and no strikes all locked up at one and one wouldn't you know it.
- 1:36:38Well they said there was going to be a lot of excitement in the 1954 World Series when the Giants and Indians got together and by George we've had it.
- 1:36:47One ball no strike count on West West from right hand hitter.
- 1:36:50In comes the next pitch fastball lady now about face I for ball to win has gone to the fastball on occasions and particularly so on West West from
- 1:37:02Western steps back.
- 1:37:05Right back up to the plate now and big spikes in and they're playing up tight hoping to get a chance to cut the run off the plate when delivers a lot of curve it's also high and that's all three.
- 1:37:16Three nothing West Western here in the last half of any number five one out and two on all game tied at one piece.
- 1:37:26And they're going to put him on now there's ball for way on the outside and that means that Johnny Antonelli will be coming up he or a pinch batter and we see who is coming up let's pause here 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:37:37This is mutual the radio network for all America.
- 1:37:40This is WGN your World Series station Chicago.
- 1:37:54The order or you're sending up his good hit and pitcher Johnny Antonelli.
- 1:37:57I think Jimmy Dudley told you earlier in the broadcast and Antonelli and poke a pair of home runs into the right field stands here to follow ground so they're going to give him a chance to bat for himself here with the bases loaded and one out.
- 1:38:07Score is one a piece here between Cleveland and the New York Giants Thompson's on it third roads at second and Western was on it first.
- 1:38:14So more than definitely now early when has his work cut out for him.
- 1:38:18That's right up on the wall and big letters when delivers Antonelli hitting left hand it takes a curve outside the ball one.
- 1:38:28Freddie Fitzsimmons wiggle his fingers down at first base.
- 1:38:34Trying to get the attention of base runners.
- 1:38:38The field has moved back to double play depth now particularly the keystone combination when delivers curveball swing on Antonelli and missed for strike was broken right off the face on the inside corner.
- 1:38:48One ball one strike on Johnny Antonelli and Johnny came up in the second and he's on a pretty good fly ball to right field and Westlake went off to his right to capture it.
- 1:38:56That retired decide in the third and then I was standing just off the plate almost straight up and down now leans over wind throws in the fastball and it's one on hit down to the right side Bobby Vila out with a gross
- 1:39:07second for one out of second to go to first is not in time.
- 1:39:16Johnny Antonelli gets the run batted in and the Giants now lead two to one coming in from third base to score on the force out at second Hank Thompson and the force out at second.
- 1:39:29The ball went from a beeline and picked up very nicely fired back to Strickland on the first base not in time and dusty roads of course ankle right over into possession third.
- 1:39:41So the Giants have runners the first and third second is open enough is what he locked in the leadoff man of the New York Giants to the one down favor of New York when delivers a curve when he locked in swings it just outside of first base foul on the ground.
- 1:39:54That's a strike one.
- 1:40:00One of the finest slides we've seen the long time was Western clicking his feet into second base there to try to keep Strickland from firing that ball on over to first to get Antonelli on a twin killing
- 1:40:14the road is done all right so far for the Giants and the pinching department getting to there's a pitch the plate to lockman low on whitey is one and one.
- 1:40:24Okay wait a minute I don't have to depend on the memory let's go to that little record book here and see that's right Brown has three pinch hit in the World Series. So I just erode is just one child at Dr. Bobby Brown.
- 1:40:45He picks up throws over to early when covering in time for the put out there's a nice play by Vic words on the recovery. He had that ball completely handcuffing an early win playing heads up baseball was over to cover that court pick that ball up and flip the backhanded to early win in time to get the put out at first base
- 1:41:00and whitey lockman almost hit that ball through big. So that's all here for the New York Giants in the last half of the fifth inning a free one put out on whitey lockman to retire the side however the Giants come up with a pair of runs to go ahead two runs on two base hits was one rock in there.
- 1:41:16There were two men left on and there were no errors. So the score at the end of five full endings of play now, the New York Giants to and the Cleveland Indians one.
- 1:41:28Well, it's really one for the books. What a quick easy shaving cream shave with a gel at razor can do for you and make sure you're up and coming best and feel great right off.
- 1:41:38Try today's handy one piece to let and see.
- 1:41:45Well here at the end of five innings at the Polo grounds means that the ground keepers come out and sort of manicure the infield get it all set for the remainder of the ball game and it gives us an opportunity here of taking a look at the totals right now for the New York Giants.
- 1:42:00I have a total of two runs on two base hits. They have committed no errors and so far they have stranded just two men for the Cleveland Indians coming up with one run.
- 1:42:08Five hits off Janet Johnny Antonelli who will now be the front running pitcher and as far as errors are concerned the Indians have done and in the left on bases department they have eight they stranded three in the first inning one in the second stranded two and a third one in the fourth and one in the fifth for a total of eight.
- 1:42:24Now let's see they had 13 yesterday and they have stranded eight today for a total of 21.
- 1:42:30They've stranded 21 men on the bases so far yesterday the Giants had nine and they have two today so that's just 11 that's about half as many as the Indians have left on the bases.
- 1:42:38So it might we might find that the record will be challenged in the left on bases department air this World Series has reached its conclusion.
- 1:42:48Johnny Antonelli goes back to the mound now and here in the top half of sixth inning he'll pitch to the last third of the batting order of the Cleveland Indians George Strickland will be the first man up and will come Hagan and early win.
- 1:42:59George Strickland has been up twice in the second game and he has gone over to in the first inning he was out number three popping up and out to the first baseman Whitey Lockman came along then in the third inning and retired to side forcing out Wally Westlake at second on a play that went from Alvin Dark to Davy Williams.
- 1:43:14So it's strictly coming up first here in the top of the sixth inning followed by Hagan who has won all the five hits given up by Johnny Antonelli and has the one of the two extra base blows given up by the left hander won a home run by Al Smith leading off in the ballgame and then Jim Jim Hagan led off in the second inning doubled and died at third base after winning sacrifice in there when Smith struck out and Avila filed out to third baseman Thompson.
- 1:43:38So we move to the top of the sixth inning here Strickland standing in he's over five in the series over to this afternoon.
- 1:43:44Let up curve ball is over to right hand hitter for a strike one call.
- 1:43:54Antonelli now for the first time this afternoon is out in front.
- 1:43:58Starts his motion kicks and throws a fastball it's 40 near about shoulder high and this is a little outside for ball one.
- 1:44:05One ball and one strike on George Strickland.
- 1:44:09Good feeling shortstop this trick.
- 1:44:14Many times it's been said if he could hit just a little bit more he'd be terrific guy.
- 1:44:18There's a curveball it's lit up on the outside corner shoulder hyperball to two balls and one strike.
- 1:44:24Another way Jim was telling me before the ballgame yesterday said one thing about it.
- 1:44:29This guy Strickland has meant an awful lot to the Cleveland infield I've watched him all year long and he's really been a spark plug.
- 1:44:34The two one pitch fastball to Strickland at the knees good for strike two call.
- 1:44:40Of course you can't overlook the work of Sam Dentey.
- 1:44:43That shortstop for Cleveland when George Strickland was forced out with his broken jaw.
- 1:44:49Kid played with a broken finger did a nice job for him.
- 1:44:53Fastball to Strickland over at the knees for called strike three.
- 1:44:58So Strickland is out of there as Antonelli wheels up strikeout number six.
- 1:45:02He's done 40 strike 48 strikeouts on the regular year and has now come up with six here in this World Series game.
- 1:45:10Antonelli will face Jim Higgin now.
- 1:45:13Jim doubled in the second inning doubled the left field came along in the fourth inning and fly the center fielder Willie Mays.
- 1:45:19Antonelli works to him the big right hand hitter takes a fastball forward through under the letters for called strike one.
- 1:45:26The kid this year has shown that often he will start shakily and did in the 39 games he pitched for the Giants.
- 1:45:34But seems to warm to his task and get even stronger as he goes along.
- 1:45:38That's characteristic also of early win.
- 1:45:41Early had a weakening spot in the fifth inning the Giants were able to pick up a pair of runs to lead him now two to one.
- 1:45:46Pitch is hung on by Higgin there is a line drive hit out in the right field.
- 1:45:49Don Mueller's got this one played just right and he's got it for out number two.
- 1:45:53Higgin lines to Don Mueller right from second out in the sixth and that'll bring on early win.
- 1:45:58And early is coming up.
- 1:46:01It's a nice round of applause from the folks here at the Polo Ground.
- 1:46:04This guy's a good pitcher.
- 1:46:14Early win a switch hitter batting right handed against the left handed pitcher of John Antonelli.
- 1:46:19A sacrifice successfully that sacrifice came in the second inning when he moved Jim Higgin down to third base.
- 1:46:27Came along in the fourth and struck out.
- 1:46:29Antonelli pours the first pitch to win it's a fastball that shades off outside for ball one.
- 1:46:37Lazy breeze blowing in from behind right field here this afternoon.
- 1:46:41It's not going to help or hurt the fly balls too much.
- 1:46:45That son keeps playing hide and seek.
- 1:46:47It's odd right now.
- 1:46:49Antonelli comes in with an overhand fastball and wins swings and misses.
- 1:46:53One ball one strike on early win.
- 1:46:56Two down four Cleveland here in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:47:09Antonelli trying to pace himself takes plenty of time as he takes his sign from Westrom.
- 1:47:14Now West pops him in as a target Antonelli delivers a big lead up curve ball and swing on hit off the end of the bat.
- 1:47:19Trickles foul up the first base line where Red Crest coaching there for the Indians picks it up and throws it out of play.
- 1:47:25So the count hangs right on for early win at one ball and two strikes with the bases empty and two down in the beginning of the sixth inning.
- 1:47:36Wind measures off at the plate beats the meat end of the bat down on the rubber of home plate.
- 1:47:41Set back on his shoulder whips it around a couple of times.
- 1:47:44In the meantime, John Antonelli tugs at his cap, kicks dirt out of his spikes.
- 1:47:51Westrom has a sign already for him and now we're ready to go.
- 1:47:54Antonelli pumps once, twice, rears back and delivers fastball inside off the hips.
- 1:48:00That's ball two.
- 1:48:03Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:48:05Play down fire, Charlie Berry.
- 1:48:08He's behind catcher Westrom waiting for the next pitch.
- 1:48:12Choco Conlon is at first.
- 1:48:14Johnny Stevens at second and Al Bartek is down at third.
- 1:48:17Lon Warnocki down the left field line and Larry Knapp down the right field line.
- 1:48:22The five men in blue.
- 1:48:23Now Antonelli comes in to do the plate swing on.
- 1:48:26There's a high foul ball hit right up over our mutual microphones up into the second tier.
- 1:48:32Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:48:34Down holding right on for early win.
- 1:48:36Right now he looks as though someone has taken a water bucket and poured its entire contents right down his neck.
- 1:48:43It's hot here this afternoon.
- 1:48:45The humidity is what has done it.
- 1:48:47And when that sun comes out and starts to boil that mist, it gets hot down on that field.
- 1:48:52It must be because I know it's hot up here.
- 1:48:58The two and two count for early win. Two down, nobody on top of the six.
- 1:49:01Two to one in favor of the Giants.
- 1:49:03Antonelli delivers a slow curve and wind punches it.
- 1:49:06There's a drive going into left field that might be in there.
- 1:49:08It's up against the boards for perhaps extra bases.
- 1:49:10There goes early win.
- 1:49:11Diggins for second.
- 1:49:12He hauls up at second with a stand up two bagger.
- 1:49:15That almost got into the left field stance for a home run.
- 1:49:19Almost.
- 1:49:21It winds up as a double for early win.
- 1:49:23And now he himself represents the tying run for Cleveland at second base.
- 1:49:26If Al Smith is able to do something about it.
- 1:49:28There's hit number six of Antonelli.
- 1:49:31And I can well imagine it would be sweet music for the years of early win.
- 1:49:35The ring at the back by Al Smith would denote a base hit.
- 1:49:40As when who isn't the fastest man on the Cleveland Indians squad by alongside,
- 1:49:44but still can move, is in scoring position.
- 1:49:49Should Al Smith come through.
- 1:49:51Smith has had one base hit.
- 1:49:52That was his home run opening the ball game.
- 1:49:54He struck out the second, walked in the fourth.
- 1:49:59He himself was forced out.
- 1:50:03At second base on a spectacular play by Thompson.
- 1:50:08Smith, a choke hitter, batting right handed, moves up.
- 1:50:11Down the bullpen we've got double barrel activity for the Giants.
- 1:50:14And the first pitch is made by Antonelli, low into the dirt for ball one.
- 1:50:17John McCall, the left-hander.
- 1:50:19And the right-hander is, we've got two left-handers down there.
- 1:50:22John McCall, wait a minute, that's Quite Wilhelm.
- 1:50:24That's right.
- 1:50:25Quite Wilhelm, the right-hander.
- 1:50:26John McCall, the left-hander.
- 1:50:28So Leo has a pair on tap.
- 1:50:31Antonelli looks back over his left shoulder at second base to check,
- 1:50:34see where Early-Win is playing, then delivers a curve way inside,
- 1:50:37right down to the shins.
- 1:50:39That's ball two on Al Smith.
- 1:50:42So Antonelli's got himself some scratching trouble here.
- 1:50:46Early-Win almost tagged him for a home run.
- 1:50:47The ball hit high on the left field wall up over the 315-foot sign.
- 1:50:53Dusty Rhodes who went into left field after he'd batted for Irwin.
- 1:50:57Went high on the wall and couldn't do it.
- 1:50:59Got away from him.
- 1:51:00Willie Mays had to make the play finally.
- 1:51:02Now Antonelli sets.
- 1:51:05Delivers to the plate.
- 1:51:06Smith takes a medium-speed fastball through there for a strike,
- 1:51:09and the count is two and one.
- 1:51:18Ticket line for the Giants, Rhodes in left.
- 1:51:20Willie Mays in center, Don Mueller in right.
- 1:51:24If you recall, it was Rhodes who came in in the fifth inning,
- 1:51:27pinched up the single, and then he stayed right on from Audie Irwin.
- 1:51:30The rest of the lineup remains the same.
- 1:51:34Antonelli ready to go now to Al Smith.
- 1:51:37Checks his runner at second.
- 1:51:38That's Early-Win taking a pretty good-sized lead.
- 1:51:40Tows the sidearm fastball over to the count strike two.
- 1:51:45Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:51:46The count on Al Smith.
- 1:51:47Two down, run on.
- 1:51:48The tying run.
- 1:51:49Early-Win is on at second base.
- 1:51:50Two-to-one ball game favor of the Giants here as we move along
- 1:51:52in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:51:56Winds whipping up a little bit more from behind right field now,
- 1:51:58blowing sort of catty-cornered across the playing field, not behind left.
- 1:52:04Antonelli has the count of two and two with Al Smith.
- 1:52:06Two down for the Indians in the top of the sixth and early-win in scoring position at second.
- 1:52:11And just as Antonelli gets ready to pitch, Smith backs out.
- 1:52:21Now he's back in and ready to go.
- 1:52:23Antonelli again the check of the runner, delivers the play to let up curveball,
- 1:52:25swing on and dribble up the third baseline foul.
- 1:52:29Two balls, two strikes on Smith.
- 1:52:36Yesterday's ball game certainly was a thriller.
- 1:52:38Most everywhere he went last night you heard folks talking about it.
- 1:52:42My goodness, what a lot of action, huh?
- 1:52:45Well, they've come right back here this afternoon and provided more of the same.
- 1:52:50Cleveland making their bid right now to tie up this ball game, and well they might.
- 1:52:55Wynn takes his lead at second.
- 1:52:57Antonelli checks him, then delivers to the plate two-two.
- 1:53:00The pitch is swung on and popped up off the first baseline of foul territory.
- 1:53:03Here comes Wadie Lachman digging over.
- 1:53:04He's under it and he's got it.
- 1:53:08So that's all for the Cleveland threat here in the sixth inning.
- 1:53:12Al Smith fouling up and out to first baseman Wadie Lachman to retire to side.
- 1:53:15No runs. There was one base hit.
- 1:53:18There were no errors. One man was left on.
- 1:53:20That's the ninth man to be left on here by the Indians in going to bat six times.
- 1:53:25Now the score at the end of five and one half innings, the second game of the 54 World Series.
- 1:53:30It's the New York Giants two and the Cleveland Indians one.
- 1:53:35Well tomorrow, as you know, the series moves to Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.
- 1:53:39They call it the perfect park.
- 1:53:40The right field and left field lines are exactly the same length.
- 1:53:43Well, look the layout over in the Gillette World Series record book.
- 1:53:47This great little book has the diagrams of every park in the majors complete.
- 1:53:51This new edition is jam-packed with baseball lowdown, diagrams of all parks, scoring instructions, all-time records, this year's player rosters, basic rules, and plenty more for baseball fun from now on.
- 1:54:01Have you got yours? No?
- 1:54:03Well then you'd better be sure to get this 112-page, fact-filled pocketbook in time for tomorrow's game.
- 1:54:09Buy a Gillette Super Speed Racer set for just one dollar, the regular price.
- 1:54:13Your free copy is attached.
- 1:54:15Better get going though because supplies are running mighty low.
- 1:54:21The last half of inning number six.
- 1:54:23The New York Giants leading by one run as the score stands two to one.
- 1:54:26We'll have Alvin Dark coming up here in the sixth inning.
- 1:54:28Dark to be followed by Don Mueller and then by Willie Mays.
- 1:54:32If anyone else is needed, Hank Thompson will be up there again to swing the lumber.
- 1:54:35Early win goes back to the mound for Cleveland.
- 1:54:38And let's check them defensively for you.
- 1:54:40It's early win on the mound behind the plate Jim Hagan.
- 1:54:43At first base Victor Wirtz. At second Bobby Avila.
- 1:54:46The shortstop is George Strickland.
- 1:54:48At third is Al Rosen out in left field.
- 1:54:52Al Smith, the center fielder, Larry Doby.
- 1:54:55And in right field Wally Westlake.
- 1:54:57Early win throwing a few pitches down to get the feeling of the mound.
- 1:55:00He stood out on second base for quite some time before the third and final out was made in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:55:06So he's throwing his court and he's ready.
- 1:55:08Stepping up to the plate now Alvin Dark.
- 1:55:18He's going 0 for 2 this afternoon. He's 2 for 6 in series play.
- 1:55:22Heading slightly over 300.
- 1:55:32Now Winn is ready. Pumps twice and throws.
- 1:55:34Good ball. Swung on and hit in right field. Through the hole between first and second.
- 1:55:38Or single.
- 1:55:40Alvin Dark is on. Punching one through the hole between first and second and into right.
- 1:55:45Now that gives the Giants their third hit.
- 1:55:48And sets up the situation for Don Mueller.
- 1:55:50Mueller's gone 0 for 2. He bounced out in the first inning to the right side to retire to side.
- 1:55:55Bobby Avila throwing him out.
- 1:55:57He retired to side in the fourth with a fly ball to right field.
- 1:56:03Alvin Dark steps away from first.
- 1:56:08Pickwards holds a corner on him.
- 1:56:10Now Winn checks that runner.
- 1:56:11Looks down to the plate. Delivers. There goes Dark to pitch a swing on.
- 1:56:14Hit and run. Players a foul ball. Hit off the third baseline way up into the second tier.
- 1:56:19A little loud strike.
- 1:56:23Giants playing hit and run with Alvin Dark breaking on the pitch.
- 1:56:26Down in the bullpen.
- 1:56:29Don Mossy the left-hander and Ray Narlisky the right-hander both getting warm and ready for Cleveland.
- 1:56:34Case Winn should have more trouble here.
- 1:56:37Dark strides away from first.
- 1:56:40Winn checks him. Looks down to play to Mueller. Pitches and it's swung on.
- 1:56:44There's a high lazy foul ball. Hit off the first baseline.
- 1:56:47That's going to fade off into the crowd out of play.
- 1:56:50Strike 2 on Don Mueller.
- 1:56:58Winn drives his hands, rubbing it down along the leg of his uniform.
- 1:57:03Alvin Dark steps off at first. Works. Continues to hold the inside corner against him.
- 1:57:09Winn ready now after a look at first. Delivers a great big curve ball. He gets away from Hagan.
- 1:57:13And there goes Alvin Dark breaking for second. He's going to get down there pretty easily.
- 1:57:17So it's going to be a wild pitch.
- 1:57:19A wild pitch on early Winn.
- 1:57:22Alvin Dark taking advantage of it. Moves on down to second.
- 1:57:27See in yesterday's ball game we had one wild pitch uncorked by Bob Lemon.
- 1:57:33So two wild pitches, both of them chalked up to Cleveland pitching. One to Lemon, now one to Winn.
- 1:57:38That wild pitch has placed Alvin Dark in scoring position here in the last half of the sixth inning with nobody out.
- 1:57:43Of course the count is one ball, two strikes now on Don Mueller.
- 1:57:47Pitch tolling, a big curve ball. Don swings on it. Hits it out into right center field, left center field.
- 1:57:51Coming over for it is Doby. Makes the grab and fires in quickly and strictly and the Dark has to hold on at second.
- 1:57:57So Mueller flies to Larry Doby, left center. And here is Willie Mays.
- 1:58:05Willie Mays has yet to get a base hit in the 1954 World Series.
- 1:58:09It'll say, hey kid has been handcuffed. Of course he hasn't been handcuffed to Jimmy as far as playing that center pass too defensively, has he?
- 1:58:17That's for sure and you can watch this kid. He'll be getting his base hits before many more innings go by, Al. That's for sure.
- 1:58:23Well let's see. He's 0-1 today, fly to right in the second inning, walked in the fifth, scored the first giant run.
- 1:58:30And let's see what happens with him right now. Alvin Dark's in scoring position for the Giants at second with one out at the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:58:37Early win, gets ready, looks down at Willie Mays, checks his runner, then delivers the fastball. Mays swings and doesn't get it.
- 1:58:44Boy and he's spun all the way around.
- 1:58:48As the boys in the trade would say right now, Willie is base hit hungry.
- 1:58:55No balls, one strike on Willie. Right hand hitter standing three quarters deep, straightaway stance.
- 1:59:01Alvin Dark got a pretty good lead there at second base. Outside of the infield playing deep for Mays. Outfield fanned around left and playing very deep for him.
- 1:59:11Win checks his runner, delivers the fastball, Mays cuts at it again, doesn't touch it. That's strike two.
- 1:59:16Mays turns around, shakes his head as if to say to himself, my, what's this Mr. Win guy?
- 1:59:23He said the last time Willie was up, early win has gone to the fastball in pitching to Willie.
- 1:59:32It's pitched in tight both times and Willie's gone for it.
- 1:59:36Here's the 0-2 delivery now by early win.
- 1:59:39Down it comes, another fastball. This one's swung and a miss for strike three.
- 1:59:43So that's all, he gets Willie on the fastball.
- 1:59:47That's the fifth strike out for early. That's the second out for the Giants here in the sixth and still Alvin Dark is on at second.
- 1:59:53That'll bring on Hank Thompson.
- 1:59:56Little left handed hitting third baseman.
- 2:00:00Fly to left field in the second hitting and outside pitching and drilled one to right field to wrap in a run here this afternoon.
- 2:00:08Rather to get a man to third I should have said this afternoon.
- 2:00:11Zesty Rhodes came on to back the run in.
- 2:00:14Now win is set. Delivers, Thompson swings on a lead up curveball.
- 2:00:18One off the shoulder, misses for strike one.
- 2:00:25Outfield fan drastically around the right.
- 2:00:27This Thompson, 26 home runs this year in a regular season, hits the right field stands here pretty well.
- 2:00:35Win ready, checks his runner, delivers the plate, Thompson swings again.
- 2:00:38This one's a fastball and he doesn't get it.
- 2:00:41Nothing in two on Hank Thompson.
- 2:00:50Alvin Dark still stretching his legs down there at second as George Strickland playing almost over behind him now as the over shift is on.
- 2:00:56That is moving over toward the right field line more.
- 2:01:01Dark can't take a lead as large as he has been taking.
- 2:01:04Win tries a lead up pitch on Thompson. It's high for ball one.
- 2:01:07One ball, two strikes.
- 2:01:12Two to one right now in favor of the New York Giants.
- 2:01:14They're threatening to pick up an insurance run here in the last half of sixth inning.
- 2:01:18Alvin Dark for captain on at second base.
- 2:01:20He's single, was wild pitched to second.
- 2:01:23Bob Mueller was up there and then he promptly glided the center and May struck out.
- 2:01:27Pitched, Thompson is swung on. There's a slow trick road on the first base line foul.
- 2:01:32Quartz gobbles it up, fires it back to the mound to win.
- 2:01:35Count holds right on Hank Thompson. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:01:40Tomorrow, Gillette's Gavocative Sports moves into Cleveland, the municipal stadium, where the World Series will continue.
- 2:01:51Boy, that's a big ballpark out there.
- 2:01:54I got plenty of room to roam around.
- 2:01:59Center feelers probably be bringing their bicycles along with them.
- 2:02:05I don't think this maze needs one.
- 2:02:10Doby's a fast man too. These guys can cover a lot of center field for you.
- 2:02:13Pitch the plate now to Thompson.
- 2:02:16Levels his count right off at two and two.
- 2:02:21Covering a little off the plate.
- 2:02:23Two balls, two strikes. The count on Thompson.
- 2:02:25Two down, one on. Last half of sixth inning. Giants leading two to one.
- 2:02:31Winn standing out there in the sunlight, takes his sign from Hegan.
- 2:02:37Big pick, chested right-hander.
- 2:02:39Gets set, looks at dark at second, delivers the plate.
- 2:02:41The fast ball is swung on and popped up. It's off to the right of the plate to foul territory.
- 2:02:45Hegan says he'll take it and he does take it. That's all.
- 2:02:48The Giants are retired here. Thompson fouling up and out to Hegan.
- 2:02:51And in the sixth inning.
- 2:02:54In the first one, there was one base hit.
- 2:02:56One man was left on, dark single, wild pitched to second, and that's where he died.
- 2:03:00It means that three men have been left on now, but the Giants are going to bat six times and they're leading in the ball game.
- 2:03:05Sir, that score with New York out in front is two to one. New York two and the Cleveland Indians one.
- 2:03:12Sir, I tell you that this series has certainly packed a wallop so far here at the Polo grounds.
- 2:03:18Well, you'll get an even bigger bang out of these broadcasts if you have the Gillette World Series record books.
- 2:03:23You'll get a lot of baseball information on every team and player that at the regular price as long as the supply lasts.
- 2:03:34Now for any number seven.
- 2:03:36For the Cleveland Indians, Bobby Avila, followed by Larry Dobin and by Rosen.
- 2:03:41Bobby Avila came into today's game with one for five hitting a 200.
- 2:03:45He's gone 0 for three this afternoon. He's rolled a short.
- 2:03:48He's fouled out to the third baseman and he forced Smith.
- 2:03:51In the fourth inning when Hank Thompson on a diving stop of a line shot headed for left field,
- 2:03:56robbed him of a base hit and came up with a play that was rather sparkling at the second base firing back to Davey Williams.
- 2:04:03So Bobby Avila comes up now looking for his first base hit this afternoon.
- 2:04:07He is one for eight. So that means he's hitting a little over 200.
- 2:04:15The attendance here this afternoon has just been announced at 49,000 and 99. 49,000, 99.
- 2:04:23First pitch to Avila. Antonelli cuts it loose, fires the fastball under the chin for ball one.
- 2:04:28Well, we had 52,751 yesterday and the two-day total here at the Polo grounds, 101,850.
- 2:04:39Antonelli gets set now, comes in with a 1-0 pitch and Avila takes it right through there for a strike.
- 2:04:44One ball, one strike on Avila leading off here in the seventh inning with the Indians behind 2-1.
- 2:04:54Antonelli pumps once, kicks and throws. A right up pitch swung on by Avila and drilled foul down the left field line up against the wall.
- 2:05:02So for Bobby his count is 1-2.
- 2:05:06This boy has been quite a second baseman this year for the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:05:11Good man, a double play combination. Good hitter. Came up with the American League batting crown this year.
- 2:05:20And I know several occasions we were out of Cleveland this year Bobby was the difference.
- 2:05:26Sparkling play defensively and offensively.
- 2:05:30Antonelli comes in 1-2 to Avila with the fastball and it's high outside for ball two.
- 2:05:35Two balls, two strikes. First man up for the Indians in the seventh, Bobby Avila.
- 2:05:41Antonelli has given up six base hits to the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:05:48Early win is given up only three and he's behind. Fastball to Avila misses outside for ball three. So it's a 3-2 count.
- 2:06:00Antonelli turning his back on Avila, moves over and goes to the Rosen bag.
- 2:06:09Now Johnny after having dried his hand across his uniform blouse, goes down for the Rosen bag.
- 2:06:15Steps up there to take the sign off his battery mate West Westman.
- 2:06:19Getting ready to fire the 3-2 pitch in here to Bobby Avila.
- 2:06:23Outfield playing straight away and not too deep although Avila can't hit the long ball.
- 2:06:27Pitch is to him low for ball four. So there's the tying run for Cleveland on here in the top of the seventh inning.
- 2:06:33That's the fifth base on balls given up by Antonelli.
- 2:06:36And before we have the next batter up there, Larry Dolby, let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 2:06:42This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 2:06:45And this is your exclusive World Series station in Chicago, WGN.
- 2:06:56Well let's see here with Larry Dolby coming up to the plate, we can go back to the fifth inning.
- 2:07:00When early wind walked the first man in the inning and it was fatal to him.
- 2:07:03Let's see if history is going to repeat itself in this particular case.
- 2:07:06Bobby Avila brave fleet of foot on the bases.
- 2:07:08Larry Dolby takes the first pitch from Antonelli, a sidearm fastball. It's inside for ball one.
- 2:07:13Larry Dolby is a pretty good hit and run man and with Avila on, it's figured that they may be gone.
- 2:07:18Larry Dolby is a pretty good hit and run man and with Avila on, it's figured that they may be gone.
- 2:07:23In time it's called when Leo DeRosha comes out to talk to Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:07:27Now very rarely does Leo DeRosha lift a pitcher.
- 2:07:30He usually comes out and imparts words of wisdom.
- 2:07:33Ordinarily when Freddie Fitzsimmons comes out, you'll have a change of pitchers, but not so many times with Leo DeRosha.
- 2:07:40However, down in the bullpen he's got left-hander Wendy McCall ready along with right-hander Hoyt Wilhelm.
- 2:07:48Walks past Johnny Antonelli, says something to him.
- 2:07:51DeRosha kicked the dirt out of the pitcher's mound.
- 2:07:54He's got to make his mind up. He has the first guess and that's the only one he's got.
- 2:07:59It's the same as manager Lopez has the first guess with Cleveland.
- 2:08:02That's the one that has to stake.
- 2:08:04That's what makes a manager's job in baseball particularly difficult, because he doesn't get a chance to second guess himself.
- 2:08:10Now the umpires come over and say,
- 2:08:12Boys, don't you think we ought to keep the old ball game going?
- 2:08:15And they say, Yes sir, we believe so.
- 2:08:17So Leo DeRosha comes stomping back behind the plate with his catcher Westroom.
- 2:08:20And Johnny Antonelli is going to stay in the ball game.
- 2:08:23So DeRosha comes on over to the giant bench.
- 2:08:25Westroom back behind the plate. Larry Doby steps in. He has the count of one ball, no strikes.
- 2:08:30Going to the top of the seventh inning. Bobby Avila having been walked is on it first.
- 2:08:34Widy Lockman with a left-hand hitter up there is part way back to his fielding depth behind first.
- 2:08:38He's not holding Avila on too closely.
- 2:08:40Now Antonelli ready. Delivers an overhand fastball. Forward in there under the knees. That's ball two.
- 2:08:45Johnny Antonelli realizing that the tying run is at first base.
- 2:08:53Seems to be pressing a little bit right now as he's pitching to Larry Doby.
- 2:08:57Here's a guy that led the Cleveland Indians and the American League in RBI's.
- 2:09:01Hit that long ball for you, but definitely.
- 2:09:04Antonelli throws. A lot of fastball. Swing on and hit down to Widy Lockman.
- 2:09:07It bounces off his chest. He picks it up.
- 2:09:09He's only passed a step on first base to get Larry Doby who slides in there and is out.
- 2:09:12In doing so, Bobby Avila, the tying run, moves down to second.
- 2:09:16Doby gave that to College Try. He was going to try to get in there and even slid to try to make it.
- 2:09:22So Doby is out to Widy Lockman unassisted.
- 2:09:26The ball that almost had Widy completely handcuffed.
- 2:09:29Bobby Avila who can really streak is over at second.
- 2:09:32And he's representing the tying run now for Cleveland in this 2-1 ball game.
- 2:09:36Now Rosen comes up. He's had one hit this afternoon in two official times.
- 2:09:40He's back in the first, rolled out to short in the third, and singled to right in the fifth.
- 2:09:45Fred Kress implores him to get on. See what happens.
- 2:09:48Here's a guy that can really hit that ball, snap it with his wrist.
- 2:09:51He proved that in the All-Star game when he poked a tremendous home run.
- 2:09:54Takes the first pitch, laid through there for a strike.
- 2:09:57Antonelli went to the fastball.
- 2:10:03First half of the seventh inning. Tying run at second for Cleveland.
- 2:10:082-1 ball game favor the Giants.
- 2:10:10Johnny Antonelli knows he's got trouble now.
- 2:10:15Checks his runner back at second. That's Avila.
- 2:10:18Comes in with an overhand fastball. At the knees, good first strike.
- 2:10:23Nothing into the count on Flip Rosen.
- 2:10:27Now playing in this series with a bad five.
- 2:10:31Doby has been bunged up a little bit too.
- 2:10:37Gets the meat end of the bat down on the home plate.
- 2:10:40Chokes up slightly on the handle. Gets his feet set well.
- 2:10:42Pulls his trousers up. He wants to be in position to get going as much as he can.
- 2:10:47Got his no balls, two strikes on him.
- 2:10:49Johnny Antonelli, the giant pitcher, taking plenty of time by pitching to Rosen.
- 2:10:54Realizes that Flipper's a tough customer.
- 2:11:00Now Antonelli sets, delivers the plate. Rosen swings, hits the bounding ball right back to the mound.
- 2:11:03And they have Avila trapped off.
- 2:11:05Moving off to second to third base now, Hank Thompson trying to run him down.
- 2:11:08Has to flip back to Davy Williams who tags him out.
- 2:11:11And Rosen is on it first.
- 2:11:14So that play goes from the pitcher to the third baseman to the second baseman.
- 2:11:19Doby Avila was trapped off.
- 2:11:22So the fielder's choice on the play puts Rosen on at first base.
- 2:11:29Johnny Antonelli tossing over to Hank Thompson who flips back to Davy Williams for the run down.
- 2:11:36Now that's a second out.
- 2:11:39And it's doubly important as far as the Giants are concerned because a real fast man has been taken off the bases now.
- 2:11:45And Rosen, who isn't as fast as Avila and still has slowed down even more by the fact he has a pulled thigh muscle,
- 2:11:50has been moved back actually at base and he's on it first.
- 2:11:53But the tying run is still on for Cleveland here in the seventh with two down.
- 2:11:56And up to the plate comes Victor Wirtz who was the hero of yesterday's ball game as far as Cleveland was concerned.
- 2:12:01Vic today is hitting right this minute at 714.
- 2:12:05Antonelli realizing a tough man's up there delivers a fast ball and gets it in there over the fifth good first strike.
- 2:12:12Wirtz walked in the first inning, singled the center in the third and flied the left in the fifth.
- 2:12:22Of the three runs batted in for Cleveland, Victor Wirtz has two of them. He got them yesterday.
- 2:12:31Rosen with the slight lead at first base while he locked them back to his fielding depth, partially back to it with a left-hand hitter up there.
- 2:12:38In comes the pitch. Wirtz after it hits a foul off the handle of the bat. It scoots back to the screen for a strike two.
- 2:12:44Time is called for the moment while Westrom gets the ball out to the mound.
- 2:12:50Westrom steps out in front of the plate and shouts something out to Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:12:56Left-hander grinds that ball around to the palms of his hands.
- 2:12:59Westrom smooths out third at home plate and Victor Wirtz steps back in with these overly closed fans.
- 2:13:10Rosen about to take his lead off at first base. They're two down for the Indians here in the top half.
- 2:13:15Of any number seven, a two-to-one ball game in favor of the Giants. They won yesterday's ball game.
- 2:13:20They're bidding for the second one here. Antonelli checks his runner, delivers to the plate and Wirtz takes high right up to the cap.
- 2:13:29Victor sort of fell back from that one, went down on one hand just to make sure he was far enough away from it.
- 2:13:36Count on Victor, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:13:41Still the two pitchers are throwing down in the Giants bullpen, John McCall and Hoyt Wilhelm.
- 2:13:47Now Antonelli wheels in the one-two delivery. Wirtz takes it. It's just inside by Shea.
- 2:13:54Two balls, two strikes. Rick had to have a pretty good eye to take that one.
- 2:14:00Charlie Barry right over the shoulder of Westrom called it immediately. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:14:08The tempo of the game here has slowed down considerably. Probably the humidity and the heat has had something to do with it.
- 2:14:17Outfield around the right and deep for Wirtz. He'll clobber that ball for you if you pitch it down the alley for him.
- 2:14:24Davy Williams playing back on the rim of the right field grass.
- 2:14:28Alvin Dark just a couple of steps off the second base on the third base side.
- 2:14:35Hank Thompson playing almost where Alvin Dark usually plays.
- 2:14:39And still the complete over shift is not on for Vic Wirtz.
- 2:14:44Now Antonelli ready with these two-two delivery. Two outs, one on here in the seventh inning.
- 2:14:48Down comes the pitch. Wirtz swings. There's a high foul ball hit off the third baseline.
- 2:14:51It's fading over near the stands. Thompson cannot get it as he charges over for it.
- 2:14:55It drops into the stands out of play.
- 2:14:58Two balls, two strikes. The count on Vic Wirtz. He still has his batting life up there.
- 2:15:04I can imagine Jimmy has noticed the same thing I've noticed in the playing of the first two games of this World Series.
- 2:15:10That everything is being done so very deliberately. Have you noticed that, Jim?
- 2:15:14You certainly do, Al. Almost as if the boys want to be overcautious in their work.
- 2:15:19Sort of as though they were working off a script.
- 2:15:22Well, let's see what Johnny Antonelli is going to deal off now to Victor Wirtz here in the top of the seventh inning with two outs and Al Rosen at first.
- 2:15:29He's representing the tying run in this two-one ball game.
- 2:15:31John's leading. Antonelli fires away at the play-to-side-arm curve.
- 2:15:36Outside, Nets ball three. Came in with his crossfire and missed it.
- 2:15:43So Al Rosen will be moving down in first base now.
- 2:15:46Vic Wirtz will be looking this one over well and Antonelli will be trying to pour it in there.
- 2:15:52This could be the pitch. One never knows.
- 2:15:59Johnny straddle the pitcher's rubber.
- 2:16:01Monkeys around with his cap.
- 2:16:03Then nods in agreement to the sign offered by West Westrom.
- 2:16:07Vic Wirtz standing just off the plate gets ready. Al Rosen takes his lead.
- 2:16:11He should be running this time or probably will be.
- 2:16:13Yep, there he goes. The pitch is made swung on by Wirtz and hit foul right back to the screen.
- 2:16:17Al Rosen, limping slightly, comes on back to first base.
- 2:16:23And remains on Victor Wirtz at three and two.
- 2:16:29Fred Kress turns and says something to Jocko Carlin, the first base umpire.
- 2:16:33Something that makes the Irishman break out and smiles.
- 2:16:39That's about the only place you'll see a smile.
- 2:16:41Almost every other face on the ball damn it is serious right now.
- 2:16:46Now we're set.
- 2:16:47Three two pitch now to Victor Wirtz as the runner breaks a slow curve ball inside and half for ball four.
- 2:16:54So Antonelli loses Wirtz and he's got to go to Westlake now.
- 2:16:58The walk to Wirtz places Al Rosen down in second base.
- 2:17:03That's based on balls number six given up by Antonelli.
- 2:17:06He passed 95 in the National League.
- 2:17:09I think we might have a runner for Al Rosen right now.
- 2:17:12Looks as though Rudy Regalado is coming in to run for Al Rosen.
- 2:17:16Yep he is.
- 2:17:18Rosen comes out, Regalado goes in to run.
- 2:17:20The pressure plays for the Indian number eight Rudy Regalado running for Rosen.
- 2:17:32If you recall Al Rosen was on at second base in the first inning and could get no further than third on a single hit by Wally Westlake.
- 2:17:39Had he been at full strength he might have been able to score on it.
- 2:17:42Although Willie Mays did throw a fine strike in as Jimmy told you from center field into the plate.
- 2:17:48Regalado is running here in the seventh inning four rows.
- 2:17:50It means we'll have a new third baseman for Cleveland in the last half of the seventh.
- 2:17:54Wally Westlake up there with runners at first and second two down tied through at the waist for a strike.
- 2:18:01Of nine opportunities Wirtz has had in this series he's been on base seven times.
- 2:18:07I guess that's almost par for the course.
- 2:18:10Regalado leads off at second or it steps away from first not being held on the second occupied and two down.
- 2:18:17Westlake has the count of no balls one strike on a count play.
- 2:18:22Johnny Antonelli wheels around and is about to throw back the second but there's no one there to cover and he just bluffed the throw back and Regalado streaked back in.
- 2:18:32Two down and the top of the seventh.
- 2:18:34Cleveland still alive and kicking here hoping they'll be able to tie this ball game up which stands right now two to one in favor of the Giants.
- 2:18:42Now Antonelli sets Regalado leads at second.
- 2:18:45Here comes Antonelli's throw to the plate to Westlake it's outside and a bluff throw down to second has Regalado hurrying back.
- 2:18:51So Westlake's count is one ball and one strike.
- 2:18:54This is the same Wally Westlake who put in quite a bit of time as a star outfielder with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:19:08Westlake picks that through the chest and shoulders has a lot of power when he gets a hold of that ball.
- 2:19:14Antonelli comes in with one one it's a slow curve let up outside for ball two.
- 2:19:23Wally Westlake was the first Indian this year to hit a home run when regular season started.
- 2:19:32Pretty strong wrists and forearms.
- 2:19:36Antonelli asks Westlake for the sign again and gets it.
- 2:19:42Two balls one strike count on Westlake two down two on.
- 2:19:45Antonelli delivers an overhand curve Westlake swings on it hits a bounding ball a short.
- 2:19:49Dark comes in picks up his first base in time to Wally Loughman and that's all for Cleveland.
- 2:19:54Westlake bounces out from short to first to retire to side.
- 2:19:58And here in the seventh inning for Cleveland a big threat set up by a walk.
- 2:20:02There's some things off.
- 2:20:05Doesn't materialize.
- 2:20:07No runs there were no base hits.
- 2:20:09There were no errors and two men were left on.
- 2:20:11Eleven men have been left on in this ball game this afternoon by Cleveland in going to bat seven times.
- 2:20:16And the score at the end of six and one half innings of play now remains the New York Giants two and the Cleveland Indians one.
- 2:20:39Whether you wear overalls or sport a coronet.
- 2:20:43You don't get by a finer blade.
- 2:20:46Two shining edges super key mean shaving you.
- 2:20:54And lots more speedy shapes for blade.
- 2:20:57So spark them by.
- 2:21:00Every time you shave to feel sharp.
- 2:21:04And beyond the ball just be sharp.
- 2:21:07And you'll like to play for the quick and quick to change.
- 2:21:15Now the last half of the seventh inning early wind goes back out.
- 2:21:20For the Cleveland Indians we have a change at third base regular who came in to run for Al Rose has taken over for him at third here in my staff seven burning.
- 2:21:30Eleven men as we said have been left on by Cleveland at least one each inning they had 13 yesterday 13 yesterday and 11 today for a total of 24 so far.
- 2:21:43Johnny Antonelli has cracked down on 33 at the Cleveland batsman.
- 2:21:48Now early wind is ready to face Dusty Rhodes who blooped that single in the center drive in a run when he came in as a pinch bat in the fifth inning from Marty Irvin.
- 2:21:56First pitch to the big fellow is a lot of curveball on a miss for strike one.
- 2:22:06I went taking a song from Hagen.
- 2:22:08A lot of playing a shallow third.
- 2:22:10In comes the curveball swung on there is a high foul ball hit off the first base line that's going to fade off into the customers out of playing strike to account on Dusty Rhodes.
- 2:22:20Rhodes has to put to in the series one for one this afternoon but both of those hits and pinch hit rolls.
- 2:22:32Now in a set comes in on to with an overhand curveball it's high up at the cap.
- 2:22:37That's one ball and two strikes to Dusty Rhodes.
- 2:22:45He moves back a step or two at third base took over for Al Rosen here in the last half of seventh inning.
- 2:22:51The only change in Atlanta for Cleveland.
- 2:22:55When pumps methodically and delivers a fastball stairs that was up above the shoulders.
- 2:23:01Two balls two strikes to left hand hitter.
- 2:23:06First giant up in the last half of the seventh inning two to one ball game in favor of the Giants over Cleveland and a ball game that can jump either way.
- 2:23:14Two to pitch by early win overhand curves.
- 2:23:17It might be.
- 2:23:20There it goes over the right field wall and.
- 2:23:44Home run but after all it was a cheap home run but I got news for you this one sure wasn't Mr. Dunn that was hit outside of this park.
- 2:23:55That is hit number four on number three off when the Giants lead three.
- 2:23:59Go on the pitch the plate now to baby William is high and on the inside for ball one.
- 2:24:04This does the road is on a personal.
- 2:24:06Home run been.
- 2:24:09You got two runs batted in here this afternoon the second home run of the series the Giants second.
- 2:24:15It's the David Williams again how that's ball to.
- 2:24:21Well when you look back on the nineteen hundred and fifty four world series you'll think of road Williams after a fast curve I'll get it.
- 2:24:30That's like one.
- 2:24:38You know something only two extra base hits by the Giants and these two games and roads has both of them both home runs.
- 2:24:45Early win delivers Williams takes there is a fastball outside of all three great awesome one strike.
- 2:24:53Delving into the joint world series record book here to find out something about home runs find out a roof geeks and Snyder share the record for home runs in the world series.
- 2:25:03Here's a guy's got a pair of.
- 2:25:05He's got a chance to pitch the plate on number Williams there's a high pop up out in front of the plate.
- 2:25:10He can say go away boys I got it and he has fine character that Hagen Williams pops up and out to the catcher in front of the plate Jim Hagen.
- 2:25:19Down the bullpen we've got an R.L.S. game and Marcy up thrown again for Cleveland.
- 2:25:25One out here for the Giants last half the seventh the batter coming up is West West from.
- 2:25:31He's like the left and walk in that order.
- 2:25:36Early when ready to pitch to him.
- 2:25:41Starts his motion big fellow rares back throws an overhand curve at swung on by West ball back to strike one what seems to like to go for that low curve ball a lot down around the knees.
- 2:25:55Nothing in one.
- 2:25:56The Giants leading the ball game three to one that's the roads any second series home run as the leadoff man here in the seventh inning Western swings and fastball and doesn't get it and strike two.
- 2:26:07Really part of this one all the way over the top of the Pavilion roof and out of the park.
- 2:26:21When sets on the old to pitch no balls to strike comes down to Western with a little curve into the dirt Western has ball one strike two now.
- 2:26:35Last half the seventh inning.
- 2:26:40Second game the World Series and Polo grounds in New York City and Giants of Battlin.
- 2:26:46One to pitch by early when the swing on a long drive into left center field a well hit ball going way back back up against the board the catches made by Al Smith about four hundred and fifteen feet away from home plate.
- 2:27:00And that ball was really given a long ride. Al Smith had a play just perfectly.
- 2:27:06We have two outs here in the seventh inning at Western's really been a proper net apple in this series.
- 2:27:14A round of applause for West despite the fact he was out on a long fly ball and here comes Johnny Antonelli up now and he'll probably get a round of applause also.
- 2:27:26Yep. I'm really getting out of the closet.
- 2:27:35I'm going to be hitting my pan is gone over to this afternoon and slide out the right and forced a man in that order.
- 2:27:41When delivers to him throws the fastball outside and high for ball one.
- 2:27:48Standing like this dusty road seems to be made to order for the strategic moves of one Leo de Rocher.
- 2:27:57That curveball whistles inside off and he caps to Antonelli for ball to the ball no strikes.
- 2:28:04And clear appearances by this guy roads in this series he's had three base hits and has driven in five rounds.
- 2:28:12Antonelli strides into a fastball and then takes it high.
- 2:28:21So the eight runs batted into the Giants roads having five I guess you'd definitely say he was tough man on the totem pole.
- 2:28:30The three and 0 pitch the plate is a fastball lead through for a strike.
- 2:28:33So Antonelli's count now is three and one.
- 2:28:41He's got it in a single series.
- 2:28:46Such a swung on there is a high pop fly going into a very short right field Bobby Abela gets back under it and makes the catch to retire the side.
- 2:28:54So that's all the seventh inning for the Giants but they do pick up a home run which gives them one run here in the seventh inning on that one base hit.
- 2:29:02There were no errors.
- 2:29:03Nobody was left.
- 2:29:04And the score at the end of seven full innings of play now is the New York Giants three the Cleveland Indians one.
- 2:29:11Let's say looking into the eighth inning George Strickland is going to be the first man up.
- 2:29:14He's going to lead off at the Indians.
- 2:29:16Well do you know what he has done at that so far in this game.
- 2:29:20If you're keeping your own scorecard with us you know that he has gone over three.
- 2:29:24It's fun and easy to score like a pro.
- 2:29:26The Gillette World Series record book shows you how to do it.
- 2:29:29It's free with the one piece to that razor at the regular price.
- 2:29:35George Strickland.
- 2:29:37Hagen and early winner of pinch batter.
- 2:29:40It's a three to one ball game in favor of the New York Giants.
- 2:29:43They have three runs and strange enough on the forehead still have one of which has been a home run.
- 2:29:49Off early win.
- 2:29:52And they have committed no errors this afternoon.
- 2:29:54They did pop up with three yesterday.
- 2:29:57A pair of home runs in this ball game.
- 2:29:59Smith for Cleveland leading off in the first inning and now Dusty Rhodes here in the seventh.
- 2:30:04Boost the total for the Giants to three.
- 2:30:06Three to one ball game stepping into the eighth inning.
- 2:30:09George Strickland will be out there in a moment.
- 2:30:11Johnny Anthony throwing a few warm up pitches down.
- 2:30:15Looks as though we're going to have a pinch batter though for Strickland.
- 2:30:17Dave Philly.
- 2:30:19Dave Philly is going to come on the bat for Strickland.
- 2:30:23Where's the announcement for him?
- 2:30:34Dave Philly from Paris, Texas, a switch hitter who started yesterday's ball game in right field.
- 2:30:40Here's coming on Dave Philly hit on the season this year two hundred and twenty six.
- 2:30:45And in yesterday's ball game Philly went over three.
- 2:30:48So he has no batting percentage as far as this one is concerned.
- 2:30:53Philly coming on to open the eighth inning for the Cleveland Indians here.
- 2:30:57They're behind by a pair of runs.
- 2:31:00Score three to one and pay for the Giants.
- 2:31:08We started talking about the RBI.
- 2:31:14In a single series.
- 2:31:15The record being held.
- 2:31:16It's being held by has been held for quite some time by Gary.
- 2:31:19The first pitch here to the plate is a fastball high.
- 2:31:22Philly for ball one.
- 2:31:25Got a left handed activity out in the bullpen.
- 2:31:28That'll be Don Mossy probably.
- 2:31:30That right Jim, Don Mossy.
- 2:31:32That's Philly swings on the next pitch and hits a foul back to the screen.
- 2:31:35Count as one ball one strike on him.
- 2:31:41Left handed on Mossy in the bullpen for Cleveland.
- 2:31:44Which leads us to believe that the early win will be lifted for a pinch batter.
- 2:31:50Particularly if either Philly batting out for Strickland should get on or Hegan.
- 2:31:57Johnny Antonelli going down in his delivery.
- 2:32:00Right side of the ball game.
- 2:32:02Get set, comes in now one and one to the pinch batter.
- 2:32:05Deliveries run up, curve in their low for ball two.
- 2:32:09Two balls, one strike.
- 2:32:12Half of the eighth.
- 2:32:15Ball crops well in train tonight for Cleveland.
- 2:32:20Fastball fired to the plate is outside by shade and runs Philly's count to three and one.
- 2:32:27Tomorrow at municipal stadium in Cleveland, the left Cavalcade of sports moves the mutual microphone over there.
- 2:32:34Jimmy and I will be with you again from Cleveland for the opening game out there.
- 2:32:38And all Cleveland is looking forward to it.
- 2:32:40Coming in from miles around for the three one pitch to Philly is over.
- 2:32:44Right under the letters for called strike two.
- 2:32:47Three balls and two strikes.
- 2:32:58Philly moves that bat back and forth easily.
- 2:33:00Antonelli now three two's in.
- 2:33:02Put the phone on, there's a high foul ball hit off to the right of the plate.
- 2:33:05That's going to come into the second tier out of play.
- 2:33:09And the ball for Dave Philly at three and two.
- 2:33:14We've lost the sunlight here again.
- 2:33:15It's starting to get a little dark.
- 2:33:17We've had a threatening day.
- 2:33:20I should have said a threatening afternoon.
- 2:33:22We did have misty cold rain this morning and most of the night.
- 2:33:27But still this field is in very fine shape.
- 2:33:30We'll take care of it.
- 2:33:35Antonelli's ready now.
- 2:33:36He's free to deliver.
- 2:33:39It's a fastball.
- 2:33:40Come on.
- 2:33:41And this is a strike three.
- 2:33:44So Antonelli gets strike out number seven.
- 2:33:48And Cleveland has one man out here in the top of the eighth.
- 2:33:51Jim Hagan who has had one for free this afternoon.
- 2:33:53One for seven for the entire series.
- 2:33:56Steps in.
- 2:33:59All defendable catchers Cleveland.
- 2:34:03Faces Antonelli with one out nobody on here in the eighth inning.
- 2:34:07Three to one in favor of the Giants.
- 2:34:10Antonelli whistled the first pitch in.
- 2:34:12The fastball poured through at the knees for a called strike.
- 2:34:20Cleveland started out in the first inning.
- 2:34:21He looked as though they were going to clobber Antonelli but good.
- 2:34:26And as the boys in the business say he got over the hump in the first inning.
- 2:34:31He's been pretty tough ever since.
- 2:34:34Levee is a light up curve.
- 2:34:35One on a foul back to the screen by Hagan.
- 2:34:38Right in the press box.
- 2:34:40Got away from three men in the press box with a television camera manor right back out on the field.
- 2:34:47That is known as the elusive baseball.
- 2:34:54When you see a baseball do tricks like that it's what makes you believe there might be a rabbit in the ball after all.
- 2:35:00There's no football advances crazily.
- 2:35:03Baseball will too.
- 2:35:07Johnny Antonelli with a new ball to work with is ready to pitch.
- 2:35:10Oh and third to Jim Hagan.
- 2:35:12One out nobody on top of the eighth for Cleveland.
- 2:35:14Antonelli delivers sidearm curve that is outside at ball one.
- 2:35:19One ball and two strikes.
- 2:35:31Hagan, foul and slender leans over the plate.
- 2:35:33Feet wide spread apart.
- 2:35:35Antonelli after pumping twice offers him the one two pitch.
- 2:35:38A curve.
- 2:35:39One on a miss to take three.
- 2:35:45Strikeout number eight for Antonelli.
- 2:35:48Hagan brings up early winter to pitch better.
- 2:35:52And it's going to be Hank Maget.
- 2:35:57Carl Erskine you know just last year set the strikeout record in the World Series play.
- 2:36:06And looking down here the pitchers record so forth in the North World Series record book you can find Carl Erskine's name.
- 2:36:15So you can check up on me on that. Carl Erskine had 14 strikeouts.
- 2:36:21That is the record.
- 2:36:24Hank Maget now batting for early win.
- 2:36:28Antonelli throws to this batting.
- 2:36:30Pitcher swung on. There's a bowling ball hit by Alvin Dark.
- 2:36:32It bounces off. He just picks it up close to first.
- 2:36:34Just in time they've got him.
- 2:36:36Just in time. That was one of those eyelash plays.
- 2:36:40Alvin Dark almost had that ball get away from him.
- 2:36:46Nothing across here in the eighth inning.
- 2:36:50And the score at the end of seven and one half an inch of play remains.
- 2:36:53The New York Giants three the Cleveland Indians one.
- 2:36:57Remind if I take just a few seconds with you guys out there who use the free-face pete's to let go.
- 2:37:03So far as all our comfort is concerned you're doing okay by your face.
- 2:37:07That's for sure. But for speed and convenience well the free-face honestly is just not in the same class with a modern one-piece Gillette Super Speed.
- 2:37:15For that matter no other shaving instrument even compares with its precision-made Gillette.
- 2:37:20There's nothing to take apart. You change blades in the flesh. To clean just rinse.
- 2:37:26What shave you get. Clean, comfortable, good-looking. They never miss.
- 2:37:30You really ought to try the Gillette Super Speed.
- 2:37:33One dollar buys it complete with travel case and blue blade dispenser.
- 2:37:37And the enlarged 112 page backfill Gillette World Series record book is included free.
- 2:37:44Shortstop batting the number seven position Sam Denny.
- 2:37:48Here in the eighth inning and Don Mossie is going to be your pitcher.
- 2:37:52Denny appearing here for the second time.
- 2:37:55Comes over and takes the shortstop job in the eighth inning. Strictly was lifted for a pinch batter.
- 2:38:01Of course as you know Majestie batted for Wynn in the top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:38:08Wynn is out of the ball game now and coming on is Mossie.
- 2:38:11Round of applause for early Wynn ladies and gentlemen as he makes a long walk to the Cleveland Clubhouse.
- 2:38:23Early Wynn here this afternoon in pitching seven innings to the New York Giants gave up three runs on four base hits.
- 2:38:33He walked one man, struck out five and wild pitched one time.
- 2:38:37Now let's see we're going to check up on that and make absolutely certain.
- 2:38:40As far as walks are concerned for early Wynn he walked two. Walked two. Thank you Jim.
- 2:38:48So taking over now is left-hander Don Mossie. M-O-S-S-I.
- 2:38:57Don Mossie ready to pitch to Wiley-Lockman standing in at the plate.
- 2:39:00He throws a fastball. It's high and inside for ball one.
- 2:39:14Don Mossie comes down with the next delivery of fastballs swung on by Wiley-Lockman and popped up off the right field line.
- 2:39:20Going deep behind first base is Vic Wurtz in foul territory and takes it for the out.
- 2:39:25And before we have the next man up Alvin Darkwitz for us ten seconds for station identification.
- 2:39:30This is Mutual the radio network for all America.
- 2:39:33WGN your exclusive World Series station in Chicago.
- 2:39:45The Redwood City California left-hander Don Mossie on the mound now for Cleveland.
- 2:39:49Kicks and throws to Alvin Dark. Sends a curve through there but low for ball one.
- 2:39:55Alvin Dark has one hit three times up.
- 2:40:04Comes down with his one-hander delivery and Dark takes a fastball forward in over the shins for ball two.
- 2:40:18Mossie a very deliberate worker hides that ball behind his back.
- 2:40:22Regular season he won six and lost one. Very few starts.
- 2:40:26Dark slugs at the next pitcher hits a high foul ball coming back near the screen.
- 2:40:30Lances off the screen and down onto the playing field.
- 2:40:34So that means that Alvin's count is two balls one strike.
- 2:40:37Mossie in the regular season pitched no shutouts. He pitched in 40 ball games two of them complete.
- 2:40:42Struck out 54. Gave up 39 bases on balls. Surrendered 56 base hits.
- 2:40:47Had an in-run average of 1.94 and that's pretty sharp.
- 2:40:52The left-hander pours a fastball into Alvin Dark and it's high and outside for ball three.
- 2:40:57Three and one. Don Mossie pitching now for Cleveland.
- 2:41:10Comes down again with a fastball and Dark leans into it and doesn't offer.
- 2:41:13Costs him it's over. Count is three and two.
- 2:41:22Mossie after the Rosenberg looks down to Dark.
- 2:41:26The way these clouds are moving over here at the Polo grounds here's a three-two pitch.
- 2:41:30Swung on by Dark and laced right to Bobby Avila.
- 2:41:33Line drive to the second baseman for out number two.
- 2:41:37I have to say here the way these shadows are moving around over the playing field gives you a sort of a weird eerie feeling.
- 2:41:44So someone with a big spotlight shining through the clouds at intervals.
- 2:41:50Now Mossie to face Don Mueller.
- 2:41:53Don is open three this afternoon bounce out to the second base.
- 2:41:57First time up takes a curve this time high for ball one.
- 2:42:02Don fly to right field in the fourth and fight out the center field in the sixth.
- 2:42:05So three choke hitter widespread stance at the plate.
- 2:42:09Mossie comes in with an overhand fastball and Mueller punches a foul off to the left of the plate back into the stands.
- 2:42:15One ball one strike on Don Mueller. Two down last half of the eighth.
- 2:42:18There are no baserunners. The Giants leading three to one.
- 2:42:23Darkness is starting to settle down here over Gotham.
- 2:42:29Mossie pumps kicks and throws.
- 2:42:31Fastball Mueller again slaps a foul. This one up to the facade of the left field line bounces down into the customers.
- 2:42:45Cleveland infield now with Sam Denny at shortstop as Vic Warts at first.
- 2:42:49Bobby Avila at second. Sam Denny at short.
- 2:42:52Bertie Regalado with third.
- 2:42:54Mossie delivers an overhand flat up curve ball. Swung on hit right back to the mound.
- 2:42:57Yes he's got it. Fires over to first base to Vic Warts and it's in time for the off.
- 2:43:02Slight collision between Mueller and Warts but neither man happens to be even shaken up.
- 2:43:08So that's the third out here for the Giants in the eighth. They have nothing to cross.
- 2:43:12And the score at the end of the eighth inning is the New York Giants three. The Cleveland Indians one.
- 2:43:20Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp and listen mister how are your picks for blades?
- 2:43:27Do you have baby how are your picks for blades? You better check.
- 2:43:31Please make sure you have enough.
- 2:43:34Cause a worn out blade makes shaving mighty tough.
- 2:43:38How are your picks for blades? Better look to let the blades we need.
- 2:43:45You know we're continually thumbing through the Gillette World Series record book and well I'd like to appraise you of one thing we've come up with.
- 2:43:57Only once has a team ever lost the first two games and come back to take the World Series.
- 2:44:05That was in 1921 when the New York Giants did it as you'll see.
- 2:44:121921 the Giants did it. They lost two games and then came back to win the series.
- 2:44:17You pick out all kinds of information in this little book.
- 2:44:21Now the top of the ninth inning and the first man up here for Cleveland will be their leadoffer Al Smith who punched a home run.
- 2:44:28The leadoff the ball game.
- 2:44:30Let's see for the New York Giants as it now stands three runs four hits.
- 2:44:35No errors they have stranded only three men this afternoon. Check me on those totals Jimmy.
- 2:44:41Three runs four hits no errors three men left.
- 2:44:45Let's see for the Cleveland Indians they have one run on a total of six hits off Antonelli.
- 2:44:50They've committed no errors and they have stranded a total of 11.
- 2:44:54And the first pitch here to Smith is low outside for ball one.
- 2:44:59So we've gotten the top of the ninth inning started with Johnny Antonelli working to Al Smith.
- 2:45:03He's had one hit and three tries that was his home run.
- 2:45:06Fastball to him is inside off the knees for ball two.
- 2:45:16Antonelli taking a sign from Weston.
- 2:45:21Johnny pumps. Rears back and delivers fastball.
- 2:45:25It's five right through off the belt buckle.
- 2:45:27A strike one two balls and one strike.
- 2:45:30So the time goes short for the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:45:34They have three outs left to them to try to do something about a two run deficit.
- 2:45:37Three to one in favor of the Giants.
- 2:45:43Smith waggles that bat back and forth puts it on his shoulders.
- 2:45:46Antonelli comes in with the fastball.
- 2:45:47Swung on hit right back off the leg of Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:45:49Dark comes in picks up their hand throws the first nut in time.
- 2:45:52Smith sliding in the first base is there.
- 2:45:55That was a hard smash off the leg of Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:45:57Ripped right back through the middle.
- 2:45:59So that'll go as a base hit for Al Smith to open the ninth inning.
- 2:46:07That's the seventh hit given up now by Antonelli.
- 2:46:11And it could be that the Indians are cooking something up in the teepee.
- 2:46:18Bobby Avila for his base hit Hungry today.
- 2:46:20He's gone over three walked one time.
- 2:46:24That was his last time up.
- 2:46:25Prior to that he'd gone over three.
- 2:46:28Coming up very quickly.
- 2:46:30The knuckleballer gets up and starts throwing in a giant bullpen.
- 2:46:34That was a signal.
- 2:46:36An alarming one.
- 2:46:38Antonelli looks down at Bobby Avila.
- 2:46:41This guy Smith at first base can really move.
- 2:46:43He can pick him up and lay him down.
- 2:46:46Down comes the pitch to Avila and he strides into a curve and doesn't offer.
- 2:46:50Down in the bullpen.
- 2:46:51Who do you think is starting to throw for Cleveland?
- 2:46:54Rapid rubber.
- 2:46:55Bob Feller.
- 2:46:59Remember when he had that blazing fastball of his?
- 2:47:02Sports World was talking about how the young fellow from Bend, Nicaragua could rear back and pour it in.
- 2:47:07So he pitches now with his head.
- 2:47:09And his heart.
- 2:47:11There's a soak curve swung on by Avila and hit foul.
- 2:47:13Down the third base line to run his count to one and one.
- 2:47:21Two ball in play to Antonelli.
- 2:47:27Scott Feller warming up the bullpen for Cleveland.
- 2:47:31Certainly been an asset to that ball club this year.
- 2:47:36Now Antonelli ready to pitch to Avila on the one-one count.
- 2:47:39Al Smith leading off at first with nobody down.
- 2:47:41Top of the ninth.
- 2:47:42Three to one in the Giants.
- 2:47:44Pitch and plate swung on by Avila and hit foul.
- 2:47:46Back to the screen.
- 2:47:53The last three or four years, somebody comes up trying to ring the death knell for Bob Feller in the pitching department.
- 2:48:02They tried to do it again this spring, but he posted a record of 13 wins for Cleveland this year against three defeats.
- 2:48:08That's pretty fair country pitching.
- 2:48:13Now the one ball in two strike pitch to Bobby Avila.
- 2:48:17Antonelli nods in accord with the sign offered by Westrom.
- 2:48:21Smith leads off at first.
- 2:48:22Not too big a lead.
- 2:48:23In comes the pitch.
- 2:48:24Avila swings and there's a line shot hit in left field for a base lap.
- 2:48:27Smith goes down to second to hold on and the tying runs are on for Cleveland.
- 2:48:33Bobby Avila wraps one through the hole between short and third and into left field.
- 2:48:37Smith playing it safe, goes down to second and holds up.
- 2:48:40Hit number eight off Antonelli.
- 2:48:42And look at that well-howned thrown out in the bullpen for the Giants now.
- 2:48:46He's really heating up.
- 2:48:48Time is called for the minute while Alvin Dark comes in to say something to his pitcher, then says something to Whitey Lockman.
- 2:48:54A conference between Johnny Antonelli and West Westrom.
- 2:48:58Alejo D'Orocha comes to the top of the dugout steps and holds up one finger.
- 2:49:03Of course that's some sign language to the Giants.
- 2:49:06Of course we couldn't begin to interpret it.
- 2:49:11Johnny Antonelli got himself a peck of trouble here in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:49:16The tying runs are on for the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:49:19First and second.
- 2:49:21Both of them are fast men and they can move.
- 2:49:23And this guy up at the plate, Larry Doby, can hit that ball a country mile.
- 2:49:27Left hand hitter.
- 2:49:30Doby's hole for four.
- 2:49:31Swings on the first pitch and fouls it right back to the screen.
- 2:49:34Antonelli fed him the fastball.
- 2:49:44Doby back to dry his hands as he picks up a double handful of dirt.
- 2:49:47Now steps up with that left foot forward.
- 2:49:49Gets his stance set well at the plate. Gets his spikes ground in.
- 2:49:54Got a bend slightly to the knees.
- 2:49:56A lot of tension.
- 2:49:57A lot of pressure on his shoulders right now.
- 2:49:59The runners taking their leads at first and second.
- 2:50:02That's what I must call for the moment while Antonelli backs off the mound,
- 2:50:05chases the runners back in and Doby gets himself set.
- 2:50:08Now Antonelli comes up to the rubber to the top of the stretch.
- 2:50:11Heels off a curve and an attempted bump by Larry Doby who's fouled off to the left of the plate.
- 2:50:18So that was to be Al Lopez's surprise move.
- 2:50:21Got the runners along, both of them in scoring position.
- 2:50:24They're expecting of course Larry Doby to be swinging away.
- 2:50:28That's a far house hitter.
- 2:50:33That attempted bump being fouled off runs his count to strike two and a big danger of that run has been taken off.
- 2:50:37Although it has been taken off, Thompson is not going to be going too deep there at third base.
- 2:50:43He's going to stay up almost on the base pass.
- 2:50:47Right side of infield playing deep in the event that Doby should swing away and not go after one.
- 2:50:52Although the big danger of the bunt has gone off.
- 2:50:56Antonelli in a squeeze here in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:51:00Hooks back at his runners.
- 2:51:02Doby takes a pitch high over the cap.
- 2:51:04That's ball one.
- 2:51:08One ball and two strikes.
- 2:51:11Right here's the situation everybody where a ball game can change in the twinkling of an eyelash.
- 2:51:16The sun breaks out now and starts to cast those weird shadows down by third base and out in left field.
- 2:51:25Down comes the pitch, sidearm curved.
- 2:51:27Doby takes it.
- 2:51:28Sidearm is outside.
- 2:51:29That's ball two.
- 2:51:31And if you recall the sun was shining brilliantly for Cleveland in the first inning.
- 2:51:35One Smith let off with his home run.
- 2:51:37Then it darkened up and since that time it's been playing hide and seek with us.
- 2:51:43Right now the sun is out.
- 2:51:45Not a lot of it but we have it here.
- 2:51:48Runners at first and second for Cleveland.
- 2:51:50Nobody out top of the ninth inning.
- 2:51:51Both men on the bases can fly.
- 2:51:53Smith and Avila.
- 2:51:54Down comes the pitch.
- 2:51:55Doby swings and misses on a fast ball to strike three.
- 2:52:04Johnny Antonelli poured it in there for his ninth strikeout.
- 2:52:07Pours the fast ball to Doby.
- 2:52:12Three times he has struck out Doby.
- 2:52:15Say we're going to check up on those strikeouts here.
- 2:52:17That's to make absolutely certain.
- 2:52:29Odd but nice.
- 2:52:31Check me gentlemen.
- 2:52:32Nine strikeouts for Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:52:36Now coming up to the plate is Rudy Arregolado.
- 2:52:39For his first at bat he took over for Al Rose and ran for him if you recall back in the seventh inning.
- 2:52:43And then came in on the bottom of the seventh and played third base.
- 2:52:46So Arregolado is coming in.
- 2:52:48Getting right handed.
- 2:52:50First pitch to him is a curve ball.
- 2:52:51Arregolado swings on, hits it down to Alvin Dark.
- 2:52:53He picks up flows to David Williams for one at second to throw first.
- 2:52:55Not in time.
- 2:52:56Not in time.
- 2:53:01So Arregolado is the baserunner at first base.
- 2:53:04He too is fast.
- 2:53:06Bobby Avila forced from short to second at second base.
- 2:53:10Ball to second out.
- 2:53:12Al Smith moving on over to third.
- 2:53:13So the tying runs are still on for Cleveland.
- 2:53:15And here's Vic Wirtz.
- 2:53:20Well Vic Wirtz has been the big siege gun.
- 2:53:26But everybody I'd just like to say that after the last man is out,
- 2:53:30be sure to stand by for Bill Corms' summary and highlights of today's game.
- 2:53:33He should have a lot of them for us.
- 2:53:35One of the really great students of baseball, Bill,
- 2:53:37will show you the wrap up of the day's play in his own wonderful way.
- 2:53:48Anthony ready now.
- 2:53:49Pitches to Vic Wirtz hitting left handed.
- 2:53:51The fastball is outside for ball one.
- 2:53:53Have you noticed everybody that in the World Series play so far,
- 2:53:56we've had no double plays and have been quite a few of them tried.
- 2:54:00But they haven't quite been able to complete them.
- 2:54:04Cleveland's still alive and kicking here in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:54:06Have the tying runs on.
- 2:54:07Vic Wirtz, the guy who was the big gun yesterday for Cleveland,
- 2:54:10is up there to play right now.
- 2:54:12This afternoon he's had one base hit and two official times up.
- 2:54:16Swings on the pitch, fastball and doesn't get it.
- 2:54:20Antonelli fed him one just under the letters.
- 2:54:24One ball, one strike is a count on Victor Wirtz.
- 2:54:27Right now batting at 714.
- 2:54:40Tension and pressure mounting here with every pitch.
- 2:54:42Johnny Antonelli knows the importance of every pitch he's making.
- 2:54:45Looks over at third base, sees Al Smith stepping off.
- 2:54:49Looks at first to Regalado who can move also.
- 2:54:51Second is open, two down, top of the ninth.
- 2:54:58Now Antonelli gets set.
- 2:55:01One-one delivery to Vic Wirtz.
- 2:55:03Down it comes, overhand fastball, swing on again and missed.
- 2:55:06Four, strike two.
- 2:55:08Antonelli just rearing back and cutting it loose.
- 2:55:11Time is called for the moment by catcher West Western.
- 2:55:14He goes out to the plate to talk with, out to the mound,
- 2:55:16from the plate to talk with Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:55:19Looking back over the men left on here this afternoon,
- 2:55:21Cleveland has left 11 on.
- 2:55:24They have two on now and they left 13 on yesterday.
- 2:55:27The record for men left on by a single club in a ball game
- 2:55:31in the World Series of Memory serves me rightly, is 14.
- 2:55:40Now Antonelli ready to come in there one and two to Vic Wirtz.
- 2:55:44It's the last chance here for Cleveland.
- 2:55:47Antonelli delivers a sidearm curve, low and outside as he tried his crossbar.
- 2:55:51That's ball two.
- 2:56:04Antonelli mucking around at the mound.
- 2:56:06Once again, Westrom calls for time to go out and see if his pitcher's all right.
- 2:56:12Let's see, Cleveland with one run, eight hits, have committed no errors.
- 2:56:16And they're battling here in the ninth inning, trying to overcome the two-run lead
- 2:56:19the Giants now possess.
- 2:56:21Giants leading three to one.
- 2:56:23They have three runs and only four hits.
- 2:56:25They got all four of them off early win.
- 2:56:27They went seven innings.
- 2:56:31Now Victor Wirtz has the count of two and two.
- 2:56:33Antonelli's ready, checks his runners, delivers an overhand fastball,
- 2:56:36which swings and foul-tips it right back into the mask.
- 2:56:38Oh, Plain Empire Charlie Berry.
- 2:56:40That sort of shook Charlie up a little bit.
- 2:56:42Said he wants to see that ball.
- 2:56:44Takes it out of play.
- 2:56:46That hit in the mask so hard, it sort of turned it to the right.
- 2:56:50Cap and mask and all.
- 2:56:53So it's no kid's chore behind that play, either for the catcher or for the umpire.
- 2:57:00New ball in play to Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:57:02Count remaining on Victor Wirtz, two balls and two strikes, two on, two outs, top of the ninth.
- 2:57:07Three to one in favor of the Giants.
- 2:57:09This ballgame going right down to the wire, just the way it was expected to go
- 2:57:12ever since we found out that Cleveland and New York were going to play in this one.
- 2:57:18Antonelli out there, bowing his neck trying to get out of this.
- 2:57:22Ready to pitch to Wirtz. Comes in with an overhand fastball.
- 2:57:24Wirtz leans back to take it inside for ball three.
- 2:57:32Well, Mr. Dudley, it's really come down to the wire now, hasn't it?
- 2:57:35Boy, this is a tense moment, Al. This is what fans dream about.
- 2:57:39Well, they don't have to dream about this one.
- 2:57:41This is reality. It's right here.
- 2:57:44Three and two on Victor Wirtz.
- 2:57:48Two men on, two outs for Cleveland, top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:57:51And it's all up to the guy wearing number 23, Victor Wirtz, who can slug that ball when he gets a hold of it.
- 2:57:57He proved that yesterday, he's proved it all season long.
- 2:58:00John Antonelli breaks back off the rubber.
- 2:58:02Under runners, Regalado at first and Smith at third, move back in.
- 2:58:07He comes up to inquire at some point of a play down by Charlie Barry.
- 2:58:12They're talking it over.
- 2:58:14John Antonelli ready to pitch now as Lopez turns and walks back to the Cleveland dugout.
- 2:58:22Victor Wirtz coming up to the plate after having been off the side, steps in, puts the bat up on his left shoulder.
- 2:58:29John Antonelli gets ready to pitch to him.
- 2:58:32Looks the situation over, delivers an overhand fastball swing on as Regalado breaks from first and it's fouled right back to the screen.
- 2:58:39So Regalado was making way for Victor Wirtz.
- 2:58:43That ball caught up behind the screen up in the second tier and a fan crawled out on the overhanging ledge to pick it up.
- 2:58:51So everybody, Victor Wirtz is still alive and kicking here in the ninth inning.
- 2:58:56Smith steps off at third.
- 2:58:58Regalado moves away from first there representing the tying runs for Cleveland.
- 2:59:02Victor Wirtz up there at the count of three and two.
- 2:59:04He's giving John Antonelli a bad time and Antonelli is trying to do the same for him.
- 2:59:09Now John is ready. So is Vic Wirtz.
- 2:59:12Down comes the pitch as the runner breaks. Again it's swung on.
- 2:59:14There's a high foul ball spinning back to the top of the roof.
- 2:59:19Oh, the count holds right on. Vic Wirtz at three and two.
- 2:59:28Redcrest yells down from his first base coaching spot.
- 2:59:31Tony Cucinello behind third. Both hooping it up trying to get Vic Wirtz to get a hold of one.
- 2:59:42John Outfield around the right and deep.
- 2:59:46Right side of the infield deep.
- 2:59:48Regalado will be moving again from first on toward second when Antonelli pitches three-two to Vic Wirtz.
- 2:59:55He's ready now and there's the throw to first base.
- 2:59:58Almost got away from Whitey Lachlan.
- 3:00:00Whitey wasn't quite expecting it I don't believe.
- 3:00:05Big ooh and an ah from the fans.
- 3:00:09Regalado is playing real close.
- 3:00:12He wasn't going to get too far away.
- 3:00:15Vic Wirtz is back to visit the batter's rosin bag. Kicks him out of his spikes with the knee down to the bat.
- 3:00:20Comes right back up there and digs in, gets his stance.
- 3:00:25Johnny Antonelli ready to pitch to him. Three and two.
- 3:00:30Johnny Sets delivers. Fastball swung on by Wirtz. Hit out into left field.
- 3:00:34Mr. Rhodes comes over, gets under it. He's got it. The ball game is over.
- 3:00:42It's all for Cleveland here in the top half of the ninth inning. No runs. There were two base hits.
- 3:00:46No no errors. Two men were left on.
- 3:00:50Well that's it. The Giants take the second one and that gives them two of two now.
- 3:00:56The final score. The New York Giants three runs, four hits. No errors. They had three men left on.
- 3:01:03For the Cleveland Indians one run, eight hits. No errors. They had 13 men left.
- 3:01:08The winning pitcher is Johnny Antonelli. The losing pitcher is Early Wynt.
- 3:01:13Now everybody, in just a moment, Bill Corm will review the highlights of today's game for you.
- 3:01:18VIV makes you look so wonderful.
- 3:01:22That's VIV. V-I-V. New VIV lipstick by Tony.
- 3:01:27VIV makes you look so wonderful.
- 3:01:30Yes, because VIV is a new kind of lipstick. Never before a lipstick so red.
- 3:01:35No never before a lipstick so red. In six vivid red shades. From pink to plum.
- 3:01:41One shade is redder than a fire engine. Another is redder than a rose.
- 3:01:45Each new shade is more vivid than a rose.
- 3:01:48Looks so wonderful.
- 3:01:51That's VIV. V-I-V. New VIV lipstick by Tony.
- 3:01:55VIV makes you look so wonderful.
- 3:01:58Yes, because VIV is a new kind of lipstick. Never before a lipstick so red.
- 3:02:04No never before a lipstick so red. In six vivid red shades. From pink to plum.
- 3:02:10One shade is redder than a fire engine. Another is redder than a rose.
- 3:02:14Each new shade is more vivid than reds have ever been before.
- 3:02:18Because they have a new depth of color.
- 3:02:21VIV makes you look so wonderful.
- 3:02:24It makes you look and feel so vividly alive.
- 3:02:27VIV makes you look so wonderful.
- 3:02:30VIV stays on, yet keeps your lips soft, moist and smooth.
- 3:02:34Because VIV is the comfortable long lasting lipstick.
- 3:02:37See what VIV, the really vivid lipstick can do for you.
- 3:02:41VIV makes you look so wonderful.
- 3:02:44VIV. New VIV lipstick by Tony.
- 3:02:50This is Bill Corb speaking and man, man, was that some finish.
- 3:02:55Had your heart right up in your throat because
- 3:02:58it could have been anybody's ballgame right down to the last pitch
- 3:03:01with the mighty Vic Works who's been taking the giant pitchers apart, particularly yesterday.
- 3:03:06And the big hitter in the series so far aside from Dusty Rhodes who's sensational.
- 3:03:11And of course his last home run that he hit today
- 3:03:17as different from the one that he hit yesterday, he needed no Chinese laundry ticket on that one.
- 3:03:22That one hit the upper facade and it was really tattooed.
- 3:03:26So in three trips to the plate this old fashioned pitch hitter, and that's Dusty Rhodes for sure,
- 3:03:31he thinks he can hit anybody in the world, has driven in five runs
- 3:03:35and that has made the difference for the Giants. That is offensively of course.
- 3:03:40But today the story with me was Johnny Ananelli.
- 3:03:43Great athlete, great pitcher, great boy, and he's going to be, is already,
- 3:03:48one of the very best in the game, won 21 games for the Giants this year,
- 3:03:52is their star pitcher and beat Captain Early Wind.
- 3:03:55The number two ace are one of the big three, whichever way you want to make it, of the Indians.
- 3:04:01And of course put the Giants in a very, very happy spot.
- 3:04:04They've beaten both Bob Lemon, who Al Lopez got 23 Lemonades out of in the American League,
- 3:04:11which is a lot of Lemonades from any Lemon, even as big a finer one as Bob.
- 3:04:15They've beaten him and they've beaten Early Wind here today.
- 3:04:18Win the veteran, the cagey old veteran pitching well,
- 3:04:21headily and strong as Lemon did yesterday, but being outpitched a little bit,
- 3:04:26not in hits, the Giants just made them count, but a little bit in the runs
- 3:04:30where games are won and lost by this big, fine kid, Johnny Ananelli,
- 3:04:34a bonus baby with the Braves as many of you know,
- 3:04:37though he doesn't particularly like the word, and he's a real big leaguer now.
- 3:04:41Nobody's going to have to keep him on any bonuses on any ball club.
- 3:04:44Very odd thing about Ananelli, and perhaps everybody doesn't know it,
- 3:04:49that makes him a great pitcher, and I got this from Wes Westrom,
- 3:04:52the fellow that catches him, old iron Mike,
- 3:04:54petty and smart as catchers come on his final receiver,
- 3:04:57and hitting pretty well in this series, too he is.
- 3:05:00He told me that most pitchers where they had to make a pitch,
- 3:05:05as Ananelli did here when the last fly ball from works to left field,
- 3:05:11they have just one great pitch to rely on.
- 3:05:14This fella can throw you any one of his three,
- 3:05:17and Westrom himself says he doesn't know which is the best of the three,
- 3:05:21and by that I mean of course his fast ball, his curve, and his change up.
- 3:05:25He can use any one in any tough spot in any given spot,
- 3:05:29and it's just as good as the other according to Westrom.
- 3:05:32So he was today a fine pitcher, and as we swing toward Cleveland,
- 3:05:36and the World Series Cavalcade hits the road for that great city
- 3:05:40where we'll play tomorrow, weather permitting, at Municipal Stadium,
- 3:05:44Dusty Rhodes has been doing about all the hitting here.
- 3:05:47He of course came up as a pitch hitter, and that was the 17th time in 47 trips to the plate
- 3:05:54as a pitch hitter that he had gotten a hit, and of course that's great pitch hitting,
- 3:06:00and you have to differentiate it from his home run, he wasn't a pitch hitter then,
- 3:06:04of course he was in the game and played for Monte Ervin in left field,
- 3:06:07and did play out there quite a part of the latter part of the season in left field.
- 3:06:11But as a pitch hitter, 17 for 47, well that's really pitch hitting,
- 3:06:16and I don't know a better way to describe him than to say that he is an old fashioned one
- 3:06:21that walks up there just as sure as a lot of hard incidents and records in every World Series,
- 3:06:26I'm sure never before have there been two home runs on two pitches,
- 3:06:33such as we saw in last night's game with road hitting,
- 3:06:36and then Al Smith walking up and getting Cleveland's only run today on the first pitch off Annanelli.
- 3:06:42Well a great ball game, you know the Giants won 3-1, you know they lead the series 2-0,
- 3:06:47and they're sitting in the honey-cheeks right now, whatever happens from now on.
