- 0:43If the Doctor Who Coventry podcast to sound like a bloody
- 0:48robot, honor him out of that thing.
- 0:50Hello, I am here today, having a ball with the Glorious.
- 0:55Steve Alexander, say Hello Steven.
- 0:57Hello Joe. Hi.
- 1:00Do you prefer Steve? I am upset distraught.
- 1:03I don't notice, I don't know. It's all mine.
- 1:05Steve all Stephen will do fine but but spell it with a V.
- 1:09Do not spend it with a pH. You heard it here first folks,
- 1:12okay, all I have got a question for you from me and it is about
- 1:18the whole. So we talked about are the
- 1:22robots human and we're kind of came to the conclusion that no,
- 1:27they are definitely treated as robots.
- 1:29Things that can be programmed, things that can be deactivated,
- 1:31but also sort of robots that we can actually project.
- 1:40Ject emotional, feelings, onto and sort of have a connection
- 1:43with. I want to talk to you about the
- 1:46whole uncanny valley thing, which I think is super
- 1:49interesting and a didn't really frightened me as a child.
- 1:53I just thought they were great robots as a child.
- 1:56Now, as an adult, the fact that they have this sort of Twisted,
- 2:02beautiful still human face Slapped on them.
- 2:09I find really Sinister in the same way.
- 2:12Our fine clowns. Really Sinister.
- 2:14That sort of the fake painted smile.
- 2:19Yeah. Is it a mockery of humanity?
- 2:23Well, I think the terrifying thing about the robots is that
- 2:27we're particularly with the robots in this show is that
- 2:29they're like a human. They are a human wearing a
- 2:31mosque. They are like a human wearing a
- 2:33mask but you know you pull that face off, there's not a human
- 2:37underneath. That's just Machinery in
- 2:39circuitry and you've been talking to this thing and it and
- 2:44it comes across as human. That's the same with d 84.
- 2:46That's the same with robots. We like say with sv7, but the
- 2:49terrifying supervisor it's but then they're not human.
- 2:53You pull that mask away, and and you've got emptiness something
- 2:57about this Society, then that these could look like, you know,
- 3:01those robots in a Amy's Choice, the girl who waited just sort of
- 3:05round hits and think they're just little White functional
- 3:08looking robots. What this decadent Society
- 3:12wanted serving them and their every whim was a twisted version
- 3:18of a human. Yeah, with with big fulsome lips
- 3:22with the force of the so, so beautiful looking.
- 3:24They want to look beautiful version of themselves and and
- 3:29treat them terribly as well. Do you think they look
- 3:31particularly male or female or the or not?
- 3:34Sure, look a little. Both as is a very clever Design.
- 3:38Mmm. Yeah, cause they got but then
- 3:41the humans also wear makeup that is makes I guess I'm not doesn't
- 3:45work. It's actually with you've I love
- 3:46with some of the others because they're wearing makeup, they're
- 3:48all slightly be androgynous. They're all slightly in between
- 3:52which look, I don't you look spectacular.
- 3:54Well yeah you do. I said she like pulls Behavior,
- 3:58really scared me again. The robots didn't scare me so
- 4:02much, but now I realize, it's kind of all linking him because
- 4:06Robo, phobia is Literally a fear of like it's a fear of that sort
- 4:14of false Humanity, isn't it? Yeah, yeah well and I mean
- 4:19robots terrified me as a kid, one of the robots that terrified
- 4:22me the most, or to the ropes terrified, most were in Star
- 4:26Wars, so you have and they both got numbers.
- 4:29There's 88 and there are things. I G11 And they're the ones.
- 4:35So in the Bounty Hunter seen with Boba Fett in The Empire
- 4:38Strikes Back. There's this one robot which is
- 4:41got sort of a kettle head and it's tall and spindly and they
- 4:44brought it back in the mandalorians, do loads of
- 4:46shooting stuff and be really cool.
- 4:48Well, I have, is I have a vivid remembrance of a nightmare I had
- 4:55just after my sister had been born where I live, pretty sure
- 5:00was, it was either a gay argue. That was one of those two robots
- 5:02in it. There's a big white room and
- 5:06there was a prime with my sister in it.
- 5:08And there was this the robot was there and there was this big
- 5:11ribbon holding the pram and the robot just cut the ribbon.
- 5:15And in Nightmare terms that was absolutely terrifying.
- 5:21Terrifying. Just you telling me that I so
- 5:25terrified? I actually did it as did my toy
- 5:28photography actually did it as a toy photo with the, the robot
- 5:31pushing the brand because it's just such a vivid Image in my
- 5:34head and the, the other robot that it's not really a robot.
- 5:38It's a computer B. HAL 9000.
- 5:41I'll probably watch 2001 when I was about six or seven and I did
- 5:47not sleep for a year. I tell you that is that was the
- 5:50scariest damn thing I've ever seen in my life, just this calm,
- 5:56robot voice, and the model. If appearing, out of nowhere, it
- 6:00was just like Jesus. So those are the things Gabby
- 6:04and but it is. It's the is the emptiness for
- 6:07me. It's the there's a robot and
- 6:10there's nothing behind it. That scares me.
- 6:12The most, you have a robot that scared me the most.
- 6:15Yeah, well suppose you'll it was table Tory in Battlestar
- 6:20Galactica and it was, I'm sorry. There is going to be a spoiler
- 6:24here. Folks, this has been out for
- 6:25over a decade. You have had your chance to
- 6:28watch it, skip the next five minutes if you don't do this,
- 6:32when Tory has revealed, Be a Cylon at the end of episode 3
- 6:35and she's always been a very sort of proficient.
- 6:37But Humane character she realizes she's an automaton and
- 6:42she realizes she could be fucking evil.
- 6:45Now if she wants to be and she wants to be.
- 6:48And so she makes the choice to murder.
- 6:52One of the regulars in an airlock in a really horrific
- 6:56scene where she takes the baby off this woman and she says it's
- 6:59fine I'll take the baby then she goes through and then sucks her
- 7:02into space and she basically Makes a choice like no, no, I'm
- 7:05not a human being. I can do Terrible Things.
- 7:09Absolutely chilling. Yeah.
- 7:11Well they've got no compassion, they never give up and they'll
- 7:15chase you forever at the Balkan it?
- 7:21Well, yes, well but then the ball good their own thing.
- 7:24And yeah the point is is this story is working on these four
- 7:29levels. We've already mentioned classism
- 7:31then that uncanny valley thing. The bit where where Paul was
- 7:34like, you know, they put we've they pretend that we control
- 7:36them but really what really you know all that it's a bit
- 7:39theatrical but he's making a point.
- 7:41Yeah they are terrifying. What's called in The Walking
- 7:44Dead? He literally calls him, doesn't
- 7:46he? Yeah.
- 7:47Well, they've got the corpse markets, haven't they?
- 7:48But it just it's it, does it. It doesn't like, oh my God.
- 7:51This is gonna be really deep discussion.
- 7:53It just casually throws these things on screen and does them
- 7:56in a naturalistic airport was a naturalistic but a natural
- 7:59progression kind of way and yeah.
- 8:03But then you're left with those thoughts.
- 8:05Look how brilliantly uses Leela, who uses Body Language?
- 8:09They talk about body language in this world only about how you
- 8:12carry yourself and the robots. Don't have that, you know,
- 8:16literal one County Valley so she can't predict them.
- 8:19She'll throw their knife on it. Just go.
- 8:21Yeah, boing, yeah, she's creeped out by them as much as we are.
- 8:26I think it's creepy mechanical men.
- 8:29There is a psychological aspect of this and I think
- 8:32psychological horror It is more effective as an adult.
- 8:36It really is and it is just really done well here.
- 8:40Yeah. But we get a bit of other
- 8:41anyway. Let's show we do pop.
- 8:42So yeah, let's do it. Well, I well as well because I
- 8:45you know what there's also there's also somebody Horror in
- 8:48this as well that horrible Gunk on that hand that.
- 8:51Oh yeah my hand but also need lots of users needles and things
- 8:56like this. Anyway, episode 2, let's do it.
- 8:59Okay, in s, V5 s V4. Sp3 SP2 sv-1 and here we go as
- 9:11everyone said, as everyone said how brilliant the Tom Baker
- 9:13title sequences, uh-huh. Okay, looks like going up a
- 9:17gastric track, though. Apparently it's the same thing
- 9:22as a stretch, plastic carrier bag with oily kind of textures
- 9:25on it. And I like have you seen how
- 9:29they make it? Have you seen the, the rotoscope
- 9:31documentary? Oh, It's it's so much effort.
- 9:35It is so much. Effort, is incredible.
- 9:37The link below come on when this comes out.
- 9:39Yeah, we'll find it will find it.
- 9:41Anyway. So Tom's got in, for a latte,
- 9:43gets more than he bargained. For why I find these seems very
- 9:45strange. This is a, I feel like we're
- 9:47killing time. We've already done this in my
- 9:49VHS version, we'd already miss skipped on with the plot by now
- 9:52we should do. We should on the VHS version, we
- 9:54should just gone straight through and done a for our VHS
- 9:58track and I love his love. His battery pack.
- 10:00We have that taught, I had that thought even in the 80s that
- 10:03Lovely battery-powered torch, there is an unusual amount of
- 10:06blood in this as well. He just had blood around his
- 10:09neck. Wheezing Blood on the robots
- 10:11hands later, don't worry like yeah, Mary Whitehouse is having
- 10:16well and it's very White House. Must have missed this one
- 10:18because it's so much horror and blood in it.
- 10:21It's a bit doesn't feel Gothic in the way that some of the
- 10:24others do because it's a clean sci-fi setting.
- 10:28It's not like we get stones of blood later on or what whilst
- 10:32Commander aggro that Feels very Gothic but is going for the
- 10:36scares in a big way. Do you think there is something?
- 10:39I've talked about a lot lately on her style and I think well
- 10:44coming down the Mary Whitehouse. I don't get me wrong when I was
- 10:46a kid I was lapping this shit up all the skirt.
- 10:49Yeah. Is there a responsibility to not
- 10:53send children to bed sort of wetting the bed?
- 10:57Well, there is a responsibility, I mean, but the responsibility
- 11:00extends as far as having guns in fiction, You know, I'll be like,
- 11:04guns are horrible, horrible things.
- 11:07I bet I went to America and went to a shooting range in Las
- 11:12Vegas. And so I've been hot had this
- 11:13because I went around Simon Simon heart had this more than
- 11:16me, but it was so horrible. It was so important watching
- 11:20them, taking kids in there and get them to shoot the shoot, the
- 11:23rifle range stuff. It's a gums, a terrifying
- 11:27things. So if you talk about cleaning it
- 11:30up, nobody talks about we should never see a gun.
- 11:33On television. So but at the kids love it, kids
- 11:36love to play Cowboys and Indians or play robots and aliens and
- 11:42shoot each other. So and this watching this and
- 11:46seeing a bit of blood and being safe with, it makes you feel
- 11:49grown-up. But can you go too far?
- 11:52Because I like, I feel is a scene in this story that goes
- 11:55too far. You, you can go too far and
- 11:58their own daughter. I mean, they always say, don't
- 12:00make if the kid could copy it and hurt them.
- 12:03Sister or her someone realistically.
- 12:05So they if they were women to the kitchen and got the knives
- 12:08outside stabbing each other, that will probably be too much.
- 12:12Yeah, well because there is a sequence where one of those
- 12:15laser some probes is it was just actively a needle is stabbed
- 12:18into the head of one of the robots, which, you know, like
- 12:22the illusion is there. They're supposed to be people
- 12:25that supposed to be a needle, like that is in, what is
- 12:26happening there, but that's not the same as talking about the
- 12:29scene. I think that goes too far is
- 12:31where the child is putting. Into the position.
- 12:34It's a POV shot of sv7. Strangling tus.
- 12:39You are the person strangling tooth, and I think it's a
- 12:43terrific bit of direction. Mmm.
- 12:46I think it might be a step too far to put children in the,
- 12:50like, in the POV shot of murder. It's something.
- 12:54Well, hopefully the children will be behind the sofa by that
- 12:57point already because the robots already in the room but we unit
- 13:00but you know that it's not you. Unless you're, unless you're a
- 13:05sicko gets off on that kind of thing.
- 13:06It's very real to me when I was a kid.
- 13:09Like, like this this world was far more exciting to me than my
- 13:13world. Oh, absolutely.
- 13:16Isn't it? It's such an escape.
- 13:18I don't want to be that person that I want to be that person,
- 13:20that sends ring. These things I wouldn't take
- 13:22anything out any of the scares, all the violence in Season 22
- 13:26and stuff like that. I just like you I do wonder
- 13:29sometimes if perhaps you have a point.
- 13:34Yeah. Like well yes she did.
- 13:38But also what you should also remembers that she was a fascist
- 13:41lunatic who wanted to control everything that we saw on screen
- 13:45and should have shut the fuck up.
- 13:48I like that character like to his name.
- 13:53Well, I'd kind of remember. It's not child.
- 13:55Visit no trouble. Is it for all?
- 13:57It's for all, isn't it Borel? That's another story.
- 14:01Okay. Never mind anyway, but you think
- 14:03JT Falls going to kill data Falls?
- 14:05Going to kill Lila here, which is again.
- 14:07It's a clever twist because we seen them killing all the others
- 14:10but but there's a clue for the viewer because he can speak and
- 14:14so he's not a dumb and yeah it was just incredibly clever.
- 14:17Isn't that? Tom Baker says he's a robot with
- 14:19secrets. Oh told him would I not have
- 14:26killed you too? Oh yeah Gregory to pollinate.
- 14:31What a voice is absolutely gorgeous.
- 14:34Isn't it? He's fantastic man.
- 14:36It's clearly like someone doing a robot voice, but he injects
- 14:39him with enough feeling, doesn't he?
- 14:42Yeah, I just that slightly Singsong slightly silly tone.
- 14:46That such a joy to copy because you can copy this.
- 14:48You can you can do them. Please do not throw hands at me.
- 14:52Me that kind of me. Every time I have failed, I
- 14:59cannot talk is failures one of the great freedoms.
- 15:08I was thinking about that yesterday, I actually was
- 15:10thinking of made all the wrong decisions today I've got
- 15:13everything wrong. Oh, what a disaster.
- 15:15Let's carry on making wrong decisions and just embrace it.
- 15:18This is great. That's how I learned.
- 15:24I got this live shows that it was you guys.
- 15:27You try that again and I'll cripple you.
- 15:32Oh, kick in. Okay, so that's too much
- 15:34violence. She kicked him in the nuts.
- 15:36There he go. Over what?
- 15:37Turns up on Blake's 7, but is that I Tim Dickinson, asked him
- 15:42to consult about this is the famous to ratzass over.
- 15:45This appears again in time, lash Blake server all over the place.
- 15:48It is a it's like I'm not an art so far but they just haven't Who
- 15:52have they cost two thousand? They cost ten thousand.
- 15:55Well, I was like really it costs more than your house in time
- 16:00lash they sprayed it. It's like nasty.
- 16:02Color green to remember. Well I like time lash they don't
- 16:10that's all I want to say but I like I look at those lovely
- 16:18little cassettes. You just see that it will land
- 16:20on cassettes calculators. They have on the walls The
- 16:23server's entry coders. But I've got to be honest.
- 16:27Yes, I from a few sort of Technology, things like that.
- 16:30Yeah, story does avoid a lot of the sort of myth steps that we
- 16:35get, you know, the spinning reel tapes and because when they're
- 16:39trying to portray the future because they've just gone sort
- 16:41of total Glam. Hmm.
- 16:44Yeah, I'll bet they're all the other side of the room.
- 16:45You've got those lovely bits of art.
- 16:47They just want to see those. It's got a lovely little stained
- 16:50glass mirror, and they've got a bit of gold all over.
- 16:52They're so nice. Thank God.
- 16:54Don't they make a joke? Don't know when they're hiding
- 16:56lucky. They've got no eye for are
- 16:58either way when they're hiding behind a stained glass door.
- 17:02And you can tell, someone's just gone.
- 17:03They're gone with bits of wood and card and somebody's gone
- 17:06over over this room with silver tape, just run around the room
- 17:09with silver take making shapes and having a whale of a time but
- 17:13it looks amazing. I do, you know it's there but
- 17:15you know what your love has got the equivalent of a nude up on
- 17:18his wall there? Well that tells you a lot about
- 17:22it. What this is about.
- 17:22Room, is it? Yeah, yeah, I think.
- 17:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:26We're with his, with his secret kinky bed bed that he's got with
- 17:30a little curtain and his new Tangy off, it tells you a lot
- 17:33about the character. Would you like a Jelly Baby Joe?
- 17:37Shut up the exchange rate. I've been waiting to say this
- 17:44all my life. So now find out of starting a
- 17:46podcast. Was it why don't you shut your
- 17:48mouth? Why don't you shut yours?
- 17:51What? She's a good as accused me of
- 17:52During my friends, you had any friends such a dialogue because
- 18:01they all fucking hate each other.
- 18:03It's just great. They call it crackles, doesn't
- 18:06it? Michael O'Brien just did a shop
- 18:09there with five people and you can see all their faces and it
- 18:12and you can see them all looking.
- 18:14And it's the perfect Agatha Christie shocked because they're
- 18:16all pondering and scheming thinking of this affects their,
- 18:20but he doesn't block it in. I thought of sorry.
- 18:22Lisa Nicole. Peter Moffitt style way where
- 18:24everyone sort of Lauren Jones. We're also sort of lined up in a
- 18:27row. It actually looks like people
- 18:29standing in a room, you know. Yeah, it's a sort of like
- 18:32pyramid leaving through and then pulls right at the back.
- 18:34It's pretty cool. Who's the killer look at him?
- 18:37He is so guilty. I do because ball goes up to Tom
- 18:41Baker. Now, and tries to strangle him.
- 18:43Yeah, just let the robots. Have you ever said this line?
- 18:46The classic example of the inverse ratio between the size
- 18:48of the mouth and the size of the brain?
- 18:51No, because I know that I'd get half way through and I go
- 18:53classic inversion of the national bird of the brain of
- 18:56the player. I always say all the time to
- 18:58people at work and they go. Huh.
- 19:01Exactly. You you do not work with an army
- 19:04of Doctor Who fans clearly not also not wallow but I would very
- 19:10briefly like to talk about Brian capture who is going to reach
- 19:14his demise, I believe it before the end of this episode.
- 19:18Yeah. And it's off screen as well.
- 19:20He doesn't even get like a death scene to see.
- 19:23No, no, no. He he's got his lovely pink
- 19:26outfit with his absolutely gigantic color.
- 19:28And yeah, utilize off-screen. What a shame somehow.
- 19:31He's still managing to play this as a bit of a sort of Cockney,
- 19:34lad in a i yeah, it's his mode isn't it a but but he's so good
- 19:39at it. He's so I'm sure I've seen him
- 19:41in other things where he turns it down a bit but he's just the
- 19:44bully boy at this point. And that's what I like about his
- 19:47Travis as well but he's gone from being the Suave villain to
- 19:51a bully boys. Cockney Thug.
- 19:53And if you can buy into that then it's fine.
- 19:56But yeah because he liked the very first thing he does in this
- 19:58story. Isn't he saying that story
- 20:00about? Oh no it's chapters telling the
- 20:02story isn't about the robot. I just twisted his arm off for
- 20:06all over in 5 seconds. Yeah but he's got that kinda
- 20:10like in this in particular he's got that kind of restrained
- 20:14violence because he's afraid because he can't control the
- 20:17situation and then he goes to attack the doctor and it's and I
- 20:22look at him You know, I think he plays this extraordinarily.
- 20:25Well even his like all Bullies Are well this is very all
- 20:30bullies are afraid and they're all like just trying to control
- 20:33the situation and that is clearly what he's doing here.
- 20:38I love that this bit now. Where's illness tame?
- 20:41You flatter yourself. Look how close they get, it is
- 20:45right in for the kiss, isn't it? Yeah, he's breathing down her
- 20:49neck. The noses of and they've got the
- 20:52same note. He's copied her nose makeup.
- 20:55Yes, I'll have more money than you have fancy family ever
- 20:58dreamed of got. If someone talk to me that close
- 21:02at work, you think of the implications are bloody noses
- 21:05off, give him a slap, although there have been slapping each
- 21:11other in this scene. Anyway, I think this is where
- 21:13you see Dash trousers, isn't it? Yes.
- 21:16Going to say before this scene know you could have been any one
- 21:18of them still couldn't. It's still a bit up in the air?
- 21:21Oh yeah. Everyone says oh you see dust
- 21:22Houses. But honestly, yeah, I was
- 21:24looking, I was looking, everyone's trousers previously
- 21:27to this. So, I remember who's wearing
- 21:28what? Trousers.
- 21:30Fuck off. Yeah, this this design here.
- 21:33These straps. Now they're make it work because
- 21:36they cover it with a line, you know, it.
- 21:39Yeah, longer than steel or something like that when you
- 21:42change the molecular state, but it's clearly, it's a couple of
- 21:47leather strap stuck together with velcro.
- 21:49Yeah, I was like in the dominators, where they will just
- 21:51go and stand against Stall and say oh no I'm strapped to this
- 21:54fall by invisible molecular bonds or in dark invasion of
- 21:58Earth where they're holding the colors up.
- 22:00Remember the ties but they clearly it's very difficult
- 22:06because you might not want to actually put your actors in
- 22:10really painful restrained positions on television because
- 22:14the cuz they'd complain you know and they get hello long.
- 22:17Time to shoot as well. It's the truck.
- 22:21Okay today we're Eating the seed where you're on the rack.
- 22:24So we're gonna put you on the rack for eight hours today.
- 22:27Let's see how you get on with that.
- 22:28No, thank you, living it. Well, Angela says, to Paul, you
- 22:31know, you move like a hunter, watch all the time.
- 22:34David Willetts in the documentary goes, I'd put took
- 22:39put my acting skills to the to the absolute limit.
- 22:42He goes I'm having to move like a hunter dressed head to toe in
- 22:47chiffon. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:52What the hell? Are you hunted for your next
- 22:54Camp pair of trousers? Yeah.
- 22:59So back back back on the beautiful Command Deck at the
- 23:01moment, it's also underlit there as well.
- 23:06So the mass or glow. It's something that thing is in
- 23:11the middle. There that big sort of plastic
- 23:13Bowl. I love bits of equipment like
- 23:16that. I know and he's looking at it,
- 23:17it's kind of like it's some kind of directional control so it's
- 23:22like the The wheel on a ship. Isn't it somewhere between a
- 23:25wheel and a bit of? Is it biblical the one that Jon
- 23:29Pertwee nicked off that ship that time?
- 23:31Yeah he's giving it to his son. They had to buy it back off him
- 23:33to action. They've all got their all, then
- 23:38we've got the Spock Star Trek viewscreens.
- 23:40Have made a little viewscreens. They look at.
- 23:42Yeah, that's really cool. Yeah, big reborn.
- 23:46Another question is, but it's one of mine.
- 23:48Oh, yes, it is. The please do well.
- 23:50I sort of written down in my notes.
- 23:52Here, that all the victims have an unlikable moment like they're
- 23:57flawed and they're rich and they're pampered even to so one
- 24:00more and one moment in with sv7, she just goes, no, no, no.
- 24:04Just bring him to me like, she's like, being, it's a robot.
- 24:08I know it's a robot and yeah, but effectively, she's been
- 24:13quite me. You've arnoff is arrogant, you
- 24:16know, to seize matter. And so it's Zelda, is massively.
- 24:20Arrogant like, are we supposed to?
- 24:22Like these rich pampered people well but you do don't you?
- 24:29I like all of these characters I know they're all because of the
- 24:32actors. Yeah well I'm and I don't think
- 24:36Paul is intrinsically on paper a likable character but again I
- 24:41just love David Collins and Devon of is the so Yvonne of is
- 24:45a bit frightening and a bit intimidating, but you do like
- 24:49him typically towards the end I think it Russell.
- 24:52Hunter wasn't giving the sort of charming lime reading.
- 24:56So he is Yovanna off could be a very unlikable character other
- 25:01than it might come down to this theory of the way you make
- 25:06people really like you is at first, you're really horrible to
- 25:09them and then you start throwing them, little bits of being nice.
- 25:12So they feel that they've broken through your heart exterior,
- 25:16it's called the sixth doctor effect in.
- 25:18Oh yeah, yeah. I hate that as an idea.
- 25:21And so did the audience is in, In 86, they were out for quite a
- 25:25lot like me, you know, is it area to that Weekly possible for
- 25:30you to fly? Joe are the live are rather fond
- 25:32of bumblebees. Very fond of bumblebees.
- 25:37Would you get a nice to have been disappearing lately?
- 25:39Like yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 25:42That's still going on in it. Or did you see that Lois?
- 25:44I was a completely dropped out character, which to thank you.
- 25:49And so I have but this is a, this is a second Tori isn't it?
- 25:53So she still trying, I think after this there's no more
- 25:57lapses like that. There's none whatsoever.
- 26:00But I do think she has a few moments where she's
- 26:02characterized quite badly. There's moments in invisible
- 26:05enemy and an andorian, but I think her characterization
- 26:09throughout season 14. These three stories, I summon a
- 26:13best characterization, any companion has ever been given,
- 26:17yeah. Just this year, isn't it?
- 26:19And then I think, maybe, maybe she should have left him.
- 26:22Loans because she's not as good after that.
- 26:25Nice timing has come a bit which is really good and horrifying
- 26:29wrong and in some makers. Yeah, so so so Joe, you're
- 26:34writing a doctor who companion and you're in a hurry because
- 26:37there's a scripture do. So what do you do?
- 26:42I call for a robot, this is great.
- 26:52Simply makes him realize like is here and even, even the
- 26:58six-year-old seven-year-old is Miles Ahead of pool at this
- 27:02point. The audience is way ahead of
- 27:04him, which is so satisfying to watch.
- 27:06And when he realizes that's, that's really, that gets.
- 27:10You doesn't it? That's just like.
- 27:11Yeah, sucker. It's really sad.
- 27:13It's we've lost in a bit worried said, I'll call for a robot
- 27:15knows that whopping great close up on his face.
- 27:19We don't really get those anymore do we they're quite a
- 27:21bit over the top. Close-ups, you know the great
- 27:24zoom in when you realize something, the loss of
- 27:28theatrical hyperbole is the greatest loss on telling like I
- 27:34want close-up. I want actors like zilber here,
- 27:37crying badly Now card. Now that we're praised the
- 27:41stories are high heaven. This is not great acting.
- 27:44Is it? Steve you've Bill Peters.
- 27:51Got they matter in hand. Mm.
- 27:52Oh, I don't know. I didn't know you thought of me
- 27:56that way. I know your past, you know, my
- 28:01brother. We work with you.
- 28:02Once you push the papa train, I will, I will defend it on the
- 28:09grounds that a worker. Say.
- 28:13I'm just a silly Posh girl, which is absolutely unfair.
- 28:15But a silly Posh girl who's out of her depth.
- 28:18Might actually do exactly that and cry.
- 28:22Unconvincingly and so somebody who's not practicing the
- 28:27emotions of being upset, would behave that way.
- 28:30And, you know, if she was the only female character in, it
- 28:34would be unforgivable. Between got Pamela Salem,
- 28:38playing the Charming sophistica, haven't you?
- 28:40And then help Louise Jameson playing the noble savage.
- 28:44So, you've got different types of women in this, how we not
- 28:48talked about parabolas element, how long before she has.
- 28:51Um, I would say that about she is beautiful.
- 28:59Tom Baker, says, right documentary goes.
- 29:02We used to do. We used to do rep together, me
- 29:04and Pamela and she'd come on the stage and all the oxygen will be
- 29:08sucked off the stage. We'd all be thinking a bit Saint
- 29:11because it's all the collective gasps of everybody in the
- 29:14audience and he said, nobody was looking at our acting.
- 29:18They were just all looking at Pamela.
- 29:23She's such a darling, such a beautiful darling, so so good in
- 29:27this. But like both her roles in
- 29:30Doctor Who she embodies, she's utterly convincing it, both of
- 29:34her roles. Yeah, there's a lot relationship
- 29:37as well. Because he got a because the
- 29:39command structure you got evolving commander and two
- 29:42sisters pilot to co-pilot OOTS. Politics is the second pilot and
- 29:48they there are kind of mom and dad in a way of this found, the
- 29:52Leon board which I think it's just an odd thing, isn't it?
- 29:56And I'm dead and it's just the two of them.
- 29:59Yeah. That 9 electron packs.
- 30:03Can I ask you something? I'll ask me, lots of things.
- 30:06Are you telling me that the painstaking research?
- 30:09I've devoted my life to have been superseded by a bunch of
- 30:12tin? Plated, Pepper Potts, I'm afraid
- 30:15it has bad luck. Joe.
- 30:18Oh, Bubba, right, snow. That's part of this podcast has
- 30:32just hit a massive, massive hole in the ground and tilted to one
- 30:36side and Archimedes screws are falling off.
- 30:39Did you notice all of that weird fabric on the floor?
- 30:42Yeah. What's that all about?
- 30:44And this there's the tiger skin rug as well.
- 30:46There's all kinds of weird stuff get why it's comfy for the
- 30:48actors to fall on the way shamisen.
- 30:50Got to throw ourselves. On that sofa load in the shade.
- 30:56Did you throw yourself on the sofa?
- 30:57A little less harshly because it's a very expensive so far.
- 31:00We have to get back to stock. I think Mars fothergill's got
- 31:03the most Sinister voice in all of Doctor.
- 31:05Who, you know? Yes, he has.
- 31:09I know God. And that little look to camera
- 31:11as well. Sv7 isn't it?
- 31:12Yeah, absolutely. I think we at this point
- 31:15everyone's got a secret having a everyone's got a back story, we
- 31:18don't quite know, all the details of anyone know, but
- 31:21We're gonna find out, aren't we? Yeah.
- 31:23Are we supposed to expect? Like a pyro moment though where
- 31:26the doctor gathers everyone together?
- 31:29Well, I he's not quick enough busy because I believe you
- 31:32gather everyone together. You just be borrowing corpses
- 31:34into the main control room, wouldn't you?
- 31:37Steve this should be appalling. This sequence where they're just
- 31:42pretending that this mining ship is, you know, going to sink into
- 31:45the ground and blow up. And we've done this a million
- 31:47times and dr. This sort of fake Jeopardy but
- 31:50it's just Teeth with so much urgency.
- 31:54Yeah, salt. This is a again, another Blake
- 31:587. In comparison.
- 31:59The episode orbit where you've got pulled arrow and Michael
- 32:03Keating on set and you just think about how brilliantly it
- 32:07works and then you think about them filming it and how how can
- 32:11you project all of this onto the screen when you're just standing
- 32:14there on a silly hat. It's so so these these these
- 32:18guys are so talented, it's unbelievable if Pamela.
- 32:21Oh Salem screams. She's going, then she's going.
- 32:24Alright, so great such a brilliant Cliffhanger.
- 32:30Yeah, you got a punch up. The only punch up here.
- 32:33I think it's pretty because it's a really shitty moment of
- 32:35Jeopardy. That's just realized with skill.
- 32:43What is this made up situation that they're?
- 32:45Yeah, I'm not sure what the leaders covering our ears.
- 32:50I don't know, maybe still the alarms and the panic and stuff,
- 32:53well, just on Vicki's headed to do that quite a lot.
- 32:55Then she when she was just grab a head, you know, Grand did it
- 32:59as well, quite a bit. Yeah, Yeah.
- 33:02But and leaders come from on that Savage Society.
- 33:07So actually that's of convincing reaction because she would not
- 33:10be used to all the industrial stuff and alarms and noise going
- 33:14on. That would be very different for
- 33:15her interesting. Steve, are you a bold enough to
- 33:18now for me to return? Twitter to ask you more compact,
- 33:22more questions. Well only if the the only of the
- 33:24Twitter RT and were content to give themselves more Pat's on
- 33:27the back. Okay, well then they cast up
- 33:29some more brilliant questions. Not faulting responses here, you
- 33:34do it. Somebody's arm off, do quickly.
- 33:36Okay, Todd Bill, be from flight for entirety asked.
- 33:39Could to serve been a companion. No Daryl, no, yes, no, wait to
- 33:43see a Salem? My God.
- 33:45Yes. Oh my God, they will be here for
- 33:49a lot of young men. In life, had she been?
- 33:53But a, but to some Lila together, how would that work?
- 33:56Two switches be like to know. I think maybe a baby at each
- 34:00other. I don't think they get all
- 34:02heavily. I'm not sure who this is.
- 34:03But with the Intriguing name of PSI fly.
- 34:07Fly fly another side. Yeah.
- 34:10And look, there's great design of but it's that VHS cover,
- 34:15where the robots look like Kraftwerk, that's really icon.
- 34:20Enoch. Am I right?
- 34:22Is he right? He is right and I hadn't thought
- 34:25of the Kraftwerk album cover I think it I think it's they are
- 34:28out and crafts. What?
- 34:28We've got the robots in a row that is the same as this and
- 34:33that so close, that VHS cover is so good, nobody knows me knows
- 34:37who did it, who did it? Who did that cover?
- 34:41Who is okay? I got a question for you.
- 34:44Yeah, who is the girl with the flaxen hair?
- 34:47What does that mean on the back of the VHS?
- 34:50There's a little thing saying there is an expert from the girl
- 34:53with the flaxen hair. And I love never like, I know
- 34:59now because I looked it up its by Debussy and it's a little bit
- 35:02of music, but I cannot place that music in the episode
- 35:04anywhere. I'm sure someone likes Li heart
- 35:06will be able to tell us where it is but I don't know.
- 35:09So yeah. But it's well ask him another
- 35:11time. Shall we dance?
- 35:13Yeah, I got the girl with the flaxen hair and write in and let
- 35:16us know three questions. I'm going to do a quick fire
- 35:21round. You ready?
- 35:21Is it Fraser? How is Mark A5 experience?
- 35:25Exclamation mark. Oh, that's original.
- 35:27Okay, so our fabulous beard. Okay.
- 35:30Question one, Pamela sailor, best actress who was never cast
- 35:32as a companion. All this is a question.
- 35:34Oh, this, I got a better actress who was never cast.
- 35:38And companion is in stones of blood and it's a bit Rich living
- 35:42mayman. Yes, to all the robots, the best
- 35:45design, classic monster, all the best-designed know you got the
- 35:50mechanoids, fuck's sake, gauri Dr. Whoo, yay.
- 35:56Or nay, the hand with the obvious obvious human flesh on
- 35:59it. We didn't have that in the
- 36:00episode. Did we?
- 36:01We didn't have the glory hound and the Quarry hand still in our
- 36:03future. I'm not a scared.
- 36:05All right there. So free actually.
- 36:06So you have to hold my hand. I can you please tell me when
- 36:08the hands coming up? So I can have my Heidi cushion
- 36:10and even Heidi cushion. But go ye or nay.
- 36:15I'm gonna put a qualified. Yay.
- 36:17Okay, provided it is on screen for Less Than 3 seconds and
- 36:22provided. It is not obviously a bit of
- 36:24brain. Mmmmm.
- 36:26Hillary's from Doctor Who to have 43.
- 36:29Dylan. Yeah.
- 36:30Fabulous. Obsessed with his podcast at the
- 36:33moment. Have you ever listened to the
- 36:37follow-up series? Kaldor City from Magic Bullet?
- 36:40If? So, what are your thoughts on
- 36:42it? If not, why not?
- 36:44It's bloody glorious, he says, okay, jove you listen to it, as
- 36:48he have it, but I haven't listened to it but I'm going on
- 36:51the back of this. Yeah, I yeah.
- 36:56Well, why not, why not? Let's listen to Capital City
- 36:58because it's probably really good.
- 37:01Next question. Do you think the robots are hot?
- 37:05I'm asking for a friend, ha, ha. Someone would fuckin when they,
- 37:09let's be honest. Well, give them.
- 37:11They probably have advanced processes and quite a lot of
- 37:16circuitry packed into them. I should imagine.
- 37:17They won at quite a high temperature.
- 37:19So, yes, they're probably quite hot.
- 37:21We did say, they looked sort of mixed gender didn't way and
- 37:23didn't ya? I've sexiest.
- 37:25So that's probably why. I find them.
- 37:26So hot. So Dylan.
- 37:27Here's a question for you and you can respond on Twitter.
- 37:30Would you like to be fucked by someone wearing the robot
- 37:33mosque. If I just happen to have one
- 37:35right here, oh sorry, Graham Hampton.
- 37:39Lots of new names here. Grandma when Borg knocks, the
- 37:42bag of jelly babies, out of doctors hand, one of the Vox
- 37:45robots has a very interesting reaction.
- 37:47I was statement, it's not question.
- 37:49Yes they do. Yes, yes.
- 37:51And, and because they watch, they track the jelly babies
- 37:55flying I'm and landing. And that's really, that's really
- 37:59good. It's such a, and it's another
- 38:01little detail that gives the robots character as well, but
- 38:04makes you feel bad because it's comical, but at the same time,
- 38:09it's right because a robot would have that kind of trafficking
- 38:12software. They watch them fly and also
- 38:14maybe there's also probably thinking which bugger is going
- 38:17to have to clear up these jelly babies is it going to be one of
- 38:20these guys? These humans know me a robot.
- 38:23I'm going to clear up. Have a good point Fraser Gregory
- 38:27prepared ever again. No Mary send for a massage in
- 38:32Capitol City, touissant Barn off and dat for of not done one of
- 38:37these before. I don't think, I've not done a
- 38:39stock Mary sent to Capitol City. It was it is to serve on off and
- 38:44did on off the 84. Well, I would I would smoke to
- 38:52suvarov and the 84. I would marry to savart law and
- 38:55e84, and we'd all live together in a big house.
- 38:59Oh, have a good together. Yes.
- 39:01Yes, Daisy called, give us massages.
- 39:03I believe between Devon of and tus and and we'd my sergeant.
- 39:09Oh my God, carry on. You know what?
- 39:12Yeah, you know you're telling me not to talk about this.
- 39:18I'm gonna finish off with Darren lit.
- 39:19Roundels. Wonderful.
- 39:20Darren it roundels if they're worked on the sand, my under,
- 39:24which outfit would you wear? Oh well, the the oh my word!
- 39:33Oh, so much to choose from but you know what I would I would
- 39:37every day I would wear a different outfit but this is
- 39:41also something that I am it brings like an old memory.
- 39:45You know that the sort of fabric they were That sort of like gold
- 39:49fabric when when I was about and particularly that bit, you know,
- 39:54the bit where two Hertz are armed and they're rapidly up in
- 39:58that kind of fabric stuff. When I was about four or five
- 40:03years old, I was in the school play and we were doing the story
- 40:05of Rama and Sita and I had a pair of gold trousers knitting,
- 40:12it made by my mom out of that. Very kind of fabric, that very
- 40:15kind of like stretchy kind of fabric.
- 40:17Okay, and it was the most outrageously Ichi fabric I've
- 40:22ever worn. So I was a loose end.
- 40:26Yeah, well, what if I could wear, if I could wear an
- 40:29underwear and my soft under layer then?
- 40:31Yeah, I'll probably be happy with it.
- 40:32But, but it's so it's so catchy catchy titles.
- 40:35We can think is fabulous Crown. You know, God, when we all have
- 40:40an asylum tells a story, you know, and the documentary about
- 40:42how she's got a neighbor this crazy, Albert, who lives next
- 40:45door. She wears like this dish It's
- 40:47gold diamond crown and she said, every time she sees her she goes
- 40:52passage because you don't you like my crown and family Salem
- 40:54sort of nods because she's nice and goes off.
- 40:56You look lovely. There's it reminds her of to say
- 40:59every time I do but I would I would wear I would wear men's
- 41:04clothes. I wear women's clothes are be a
- 41:06top laugh.
