- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two Podcasts with Evan
- 0:07Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex bar and Lazarre.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Hello, everybody nailed it? Joined us always by our bar Gas.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bar The great time
- 0:20Speaker 1: of year for us.
- 0:21Speaker 2: This is the draft in training camp. I feel like
- 0:24Speaker 2: our wheelhouse on this show. I feel like this is
- 0:27Speaker 2: our place.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Like the more players we're dealing with that one Eddie
- 0:30Speaker 1: given point, the better we do.
- 0:31Speaker 2: And because the ninety first guy matters on Catch twenty two,
- 0:34Speaker 2: the punter matter.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Certainly. Hope you included special teams on your list.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I did. I think this team has got real aspirations.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Can we get into the playoffs in January and the
- 0:44Speaker 2: personal protector screws up the protection and a plot and
- 0:47Speaker 2: a punt gets blocked in the AFC Championship game, We're
- 0:50Speaker 2: gonna We're gonna have to talk about it. This is
- 0:58Speaker 2: a fun start to the show. Okay, Oh there we are.
- 1:00Speaker 2: That was loud.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I know if people could hear that. I get the
- 1:03Speaker 1: Monster trucks right now.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Monster Jam is tomorrow night here at stadium.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I don't know if that was shattering that.
- 1:12Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:12Speaker 1: It was a truck with truck.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I was about to go out there and Yale, you're
- 1:16Speaker 2: gonna yeah, show going on in here? Be quiet all right?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Well as the opening UH made it sound and set
- 1:26Speaker 2: the table rightfully. So Alex, this is uh, this is
- 1:29Speaker 2: our time of year on Cash twenty two. One of
- 1:31Speaker 2: I would say this in the draft, our two favorite
- 1:35Speaker 2: times of the year on this show, because the ninety
- 1:37Speaker 2: first guy does matter on the roster. And when I
- 1:40Speaker 2: was trying to figure out how we were going to
- 1:42Speaker 2: structure the show today, I wanted to make sure that
- 1:45Speaker 2: we talked about as many players and as many battles
- 1:48Speaker 2: and as many things as we possibly could. So I
- 1:52Speaker 2: came up with the idea of we're gonna have top storylines.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I got about six or seven of them, no pun intended,
- 2:00Speaker 2: and then I got then we're gonna do three up,
- 2:02Speaker 2: three down, where we're gonna focus a little bit more
- 2:05Speaker 2: on the bubble players in the back end of the
- 2:08Speaker 2: roster guys, and three up, three down, so you're gonna
- 2:11Speaker 2: get your fix a Christian Gonzalez and Kaishaan Boodi and
- 2:15Speaker 2: AJ Brown on the top of the show. Then we'll
- 2:17Speaker 2: get up to three up, three down. Then we'll get
- 2:19Speaker 2: into your phone calls and your emails and your participation
- 2:22Speaker 2: in the show. So should be a really good show.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You have plenty to talk about after watching three competitive
- 2:28Speaker 2: practices for total if you want to count the walkthrough.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But I don't know about you, Alex, yesterday felt like
- 2:33Speaker 2: the first day of training camp. That practice yesterday two
- 2:37Speaker 2: hours shells, which is essentially the same thing as full,
- 2:41Speaker 2: full padded practices at this point in the NFL lexicon.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Two hours under the sun, lots of team drills one
- 2:49Speaker 2: on ones for the offensive and defensive lineman, some thudding,
- 2:53Speaker 2: some hitting. I mean that was I was like, all right,
- 2:56Speaker 2: here we go, here we go. Cause first couple of
- 2:58Speaker 2: days I was a little I was a little bored,
- 3:01Speaker 2: which I think is what you get for a lot
- 3:03Speaker 2: of different.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Reasons extension of the spring. But they ramped it back
- 3:06Speaker 1: up for sure yesterday. And we know even last year,
- 3:09Speaker 1: like some of those practices aren't fully padded, but they're
- 3:13Speaker 1: in the shells kind of reflect more of a padded
- 3:15Speaker 1: practice under Mike Vrabel, And I think that's a little
- 3:17Speaker 1: bit of what we saw yesterday.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, So some of that's because of the five day
- 3:22Speaker 2: ramp up period and the way the NFL structures things
- 3:25Speaker 2: some of that, though, I just looking at this team
- 3:28Speaker 2: right now and the way things currently stand, I can't
- 3:31Speaker 2: remember the last time we covered a camp alex where
- 3:34Speaker 2: they had pretty much no starting jobs available, Like there's
- 3:37Speaker 2: really no starting roles available on either side of the
- 3:42Speaker 2: football you want to call it, you know, the elevens
- 3:45Speaker 2: on each side. I think both of us, barring injury,
- 3:49Speaker 2: could tell you the eleven starters on offense and the
- 3:52Speaker 2: eleven starters on defense, you know, forgetting about packages and
- 3:56Speaker 2: things like that. But the general eleven guys today that's
- 4:00Speaker 2: going to be out there week one in Seattle on
- 4:03Speaker 2: Wednesday night in the beginning of September, So there isn't
- 4:06Speaker 2: as many of those opportunities. They don't have a new
- 4:08Speaker 2: coaching staff. They don't they're not trying to break in
- 4:12Speaker 2: a number three overall, pick at quarterback or have a
- 4:14Speaker 2: quarterback competition. So overall it's just been a much different start,
- 4:19Speaker 2: much different feel to training camp. I think for a
- 4:22Speaker 2: lot of those types of reasons. The coaching staff is
- 4:25Speaker 2: entire back in its entirety. Drake May is kind of
- 4:28Speaker 2: a made man now or not worrying about whether or
- 4:31Speaker 2: not they have a quarterback. There aren't a whole lot
- 4:33Speaker 2: of starting jobs available, so you do find yourself talking
- 4:37Speaker 2: a lot about the third tight end, the third running back,
- 4:40Speaker 2: depth on defense at all three levels. That's type of stuff,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and I don't know if we're going to get a
- 4:46Speaker 2: real barometer maybe in the joint practices of the big
- 4:51Speaker 2: picture questions with this team. The pass rush, yeah, Drake
- 4:54Speaker 2: May's improvement from year two to year three, the young
- 4:57Speaker 2: offensive lineman and the offensive line in general improving, like
- 5:01Speaker 2: those are the things that are going to make or
- 5:02Speaker 2: break their season this year. I don't know if we're
- 5:05Speaker 2: going to learn any of that in late July or
- 5:08Speaker 2: even in August, so that that does kind of put
- 5:11Speaker 2: a little bit of a damper on training camp, but
- 5:12Speaker 2: would have been your overall impressions of the first four
- 5:15Speaker 2: days of training camp before we get into the specifics.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I think it's been a good back and forth between
- 5:20Speaker 1: the offense and the defense. We've had the last maybe
- 5:25Speaker 1: not as much last year, but the previous years before that, Right,
- 5:28Speaker 1: these camps were dominated by the defense, and that's not
- 5:30Speaker 1: you want to see. You want to see it be
- 5:32Speaker 1: kind of balanced. You want to see guys go back
- 5:34Speaker 1: and forth. So I think, you know, it's very early,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but I do think that's been the case. I think
- 5:39Speaker 1: the offense pretty definitively one day one, I think the
- 5:43Speaker 1: defense pretty definitively one day, two day threw his walk
- 5:47Speaker 1: THROUGHSD you throw that out, and then honestly, like I
- 5:49Speaker 1: don't know, was yesterday a draw. I thought the defense
- 5:53Speaker 1: had a really good first half of practice, and then
- 5:55Speaker 1: Drake May kind of came back and responded in that
- 5:56Speaker 1: second half. So, however you want to, you know, probably
- 6:01Speaker 1: lean offense, but that one was pretty even. So I
- 6:04Speaker 1: think it's been a good back and forth, which again
- 6:06Speaker 1: we'ven't seen in a while.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yesterday it was a great day yesterday. It was a
- 6:09Speaker 2: really good day at work because I thought, like you said,
- 6:11Speaker 2: early on, Drake May had a few May sprays, was
- 6:14Speaker 2: a little wild with his accuracy. I was watching the
- 6:17Speaker 2: one on ones mostly, but I heard him seven on seven.
- 6:20Speaker 2: He was a little bit errant with some of his
- 6:22Speaker 2: throws too. And then later on in practice you started
- 6:25Speaker 2: to see not necessarily the rhythm or the efficiency that
- 6:30Speaker 2: I think we're hoping to see by later in training camp,
- 6:33Speaker 2: but the downfield throws started to come, you know, the
- 6:35Speaker 2: one to key Shan Boudie, the one the Hunter Henry
- 6:38Speaker 2: to wonder Remandrie Stevenson. If that wasn't a sack, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I don't know, it was close, but if he did
- 6:44Speaker 2: get it off, that was a great throw and a
- 6:46Speaker 2: great extension of the play. That's you started to see
- 6:49Speaker 2: a lot more of the Drake May stuff that we
- 6:51Speaker 2: saw last year, throwing the ball down the field and
- 6:55Speaker 2: things of that nature. So a great back and forth
- 6:58Speaker 2: yesterday competitive There was one where Mike Rabel had to
- 7:02Speaker 2: blow the whistle and Christian Barmore got pretty heated and
- 7:05Speaker 2: it was because he got a little too close to
- 7:06Speaker 2: the quarterback and so the offensive line got a little
- 7:09Speaker 2: heated that he got a little bit too close to
- 7:11Speaker 2: Drake May for a practice and like that, that's the
- 7:14Speaker 2: type of intensity and a type of competitive competitiveness that
- 7:18Speaker 2: you want to see even this early. I think, you know,
- 7:21Speaker 2: I think they felt it yesterday a little bit.
- 7:23Speaker 1: It's been a very competitive few days for the non
- 7:26Speaker 1: padded portion.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I would say, yeah, I would agree, and I think that,
- 7:30Speaker 2: you know, Christian Gonzalez said it after practice, and then
- 7:32Speaker 2: we'll move on to the specific things I wrote down
- 7:36Speaker 2: that that lost in the Super Bowl. I think it's
- 7:38Speaker 2: lingering in the sense that it's lingering as a stinging
- 7:41Speaker 2: feeling for a lot of these guys. Even a guy
- 7:44Speaker 2: like Christian Gonzalez, who was the best player on the
- 7:45Speaker 2: field for the Patriots in the Super Bowl. H he
- 7:49Speaker 2: even is like still has a bitter taste in his
- 7:51Speaker 2: mouth about it. So I think some of the intensity
- 7:54Speaker 2: early on in camp is stemming from the fact that
- 7:56Speaker 2: they hated how it ended for them last year and
- 7:58Speaker 2: they're trying to correct at this time around. So we'll
- 8:01Speaker 2: see if they're able to do that. All right, let's
- 8:03Speaker 2: get into the top takeaways, top storylines here from the
- 8:07Speaker 2: start of camp, and I think the number one storyline,
- 8:09Speaker 2: and I think this has jumped, you know, Christian Gonzalez's
- 8:13Speaker 2: contract situation. Just from a camp perspective, I think we
- 8:16Speaker 2: have to start with Kishan Boudy and Kaishan Boody's just
- 8:19Speaker 2: red hot start here to training camp. I think he's
- 8:22Speaker 2: just been maybe even better than what we saw him
- 8:25Speaker 2: look like in the regular season last year. Obviously, the
- 8:28Speaker 2: downfield throws have all been there, but he's made a
- 8:31Speaker 2: couple of intermediate catches as well. But the play he
- 8:34Speaker 2: made yesterday and the throw and the catch were great.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Over Kevin Byer was just vintage. Drake made a Kaishan Boody,
- 8:41Speaker 2: you know, does a really good play all around. I
- 8:45Speaker 2: have been luke warm on this idea of having a
- 8:48Speaker 2: three receiver set that's a lot of Brown Booty Dobbs
- 8:54Speaker 2: because of the overlapping skill sets. I don't love the
- 8:57Speaker 2: fact that there's not a speed guy on the field
- 8:59Speaker 2: and that grouping. But the more you see kaish On
- 9:03Speaker 2: Booty emerge, the more that you have to start experimenting.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And I think they are trying to experiment or explore
- 9:09Speaker 2: ways of having him and aj Brown specifically play together.
- 9:14Speaker 2: You know, both guys that have played a lot of
- 9:16Speaker 2: X in their career. How do we get these guys
- 9:18Speaker 2: on the field together and still remain versatile in multiple
- 9:22Speaker 2: The other thing I would just mention about Booty is
- 9:25Speaker 2: I think we're at the point now. I wouldn't say
- 9:28Speaker 2: that he's untradeable, but if you're going to trade him,
- 9:31Speaker 2: it has to be for something good, Like we're out
- 9:33Speaker 2: of the world of we're going to take a conditional
- 9:37Speaker 2: six that turns into a fifth if he plays well,
- 9:39Speaker 2: like it has to be in my opinion, at least
- 9:42Speaker 2: I would say a fourth round pick, maybe even a
- 9:44Speaker 2: third round pick to even have the conversation to make
- 9:47Speaker 2: it worthwhile to trade Kaishon Booty at this point. So
- 9:51Speaker 2: if anything about it has changed for me from where
- 9:54Speaker 2: we started to where we are four days in, I'm
- 9:57Speaker 2: starting to see that there is a path forward with
- 9:59Speaker 2: all all three of those guys on the roster and
- 10:01Speaker 2: working it together out there on the field. And I
- 10:04Speaker 2: think that the price for Kaishan Boody in a trade
- 10:07Speaker 2: has gone significantly up. Like I don't think you can
- 10:11Speaker 2: just give away Kaishan Boudy at this point.
- 10:13Speaker 1: No, not the way he's playing right now. No, He's
- 10:15Speaker 1: gonna make it very difficult on him. The reality is
- 10:17Speaker 1: like somebody's gonna have to be the odd man out,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and there isn't a clear one. They have seven legit,
- 10:22Speaker 1: you know, NFL caliber receivers. You can't carry seven. But
- 10:27Speaker 1: where the chemistry's at with Kaishan Booty and all of that,
- 10:29Speaker 1: And I think that I don't think I think he's
- 10:34Speaker 1: having an outstanding camp. This is not jet Not only
- 10:38Speaker 1: has he been the best player on the field for
- 10:39Speaker 1: the Patriots. I think this is the best. He looked
- 10:43Speaker 1: saying like, oh, Kaishan Boody picked up where he left
- 10:45Speaker 1: off last year. I think is underselling it a little bit. Yeah,
- 10:48Speaker 1: he's been that good because the consistency's always been the
- 10:51Speaker 1: issue with him. It's been in spurts and he's been
- 10:52Speaker 1: so consistent. But I think even more than that, it's
- 10:55Speaker 1: the chemistry with Drake May and where you look at
- 10:57Speaker 1: he's still building the chemistry with AJ Brown, he's still
- 10:59Speaker 1: building the camstry with Romeo Dobbs. It's such a stark difference,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and I think that you know, Zoe's been talking about
- 11:07Speaker 1: this when I've done shows with him. Third, Nate, you asked,
- 11:10Speaker 1: Drake May, who do you want in the huddle with you?
- 11:12Speaker 1: Who's the first name? He's gonna say. It's probably gonna
- 11:14Speaker 1: be Kashan, But it's gonna be Kashan Boody and Harber
- 11:16Speaker 1: Henry Ye are gonna be the first two names out
- 11:18Speaker 1: of his mouth. Right, So that's really hard to move
- 11:23Speaker 1: off of unless you get blown away. Obviously, if you
- 11:25Speaker 1: recoup the first you got right for trading A J. Brown.
- 11:28Speaker 1: You not that I think they can get that. But no,
- 11:31Speaker 1: he's been too good you can't move a guy that's
- 11:32Speaker 1: playing this well.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it does, and I maybe this is also part
- 11:36Speaker 2: of it. I've kind of learned my lesson from the
- 11:38Speaker 2: Jacobe Meyers situation. It's not exactly the same, but it
- 11:41Speaker 2: does feel a little bit like that, where you have
- 11:44Speaker 2: a receiver with your young quarterback that have clear chemistry
- 11:47Speaker 2: with one another. Yeah and clear uh. You know, they've
- 11:50Speaker 2: gone they played games together, they've had productive seasons together.
- 11:54Speaker 2: And even though you might look at it on paper
- 11:57Speaker 2: and say, aj browd and Romeo do there better players
- 12:01Speaker 2: or have had better careers than Kashan Boody, you don't
- 12:04Speaker 2: want to take the binkie away from the quarterback. Right
- 12:06Speaker 2: and right now, Kaishan Boody feels a little bit even
- 12:09Speaker 2: though it's different than like a Brady binkie, because a
- 12:12Speaker 2: Brady binkie would be like an Edelman or a Welker
- 12:14Speaker 2: type of receiver. This is like a down the field
- 12:16Speaker 2: binkie because that's Drake May's superpower is throwing the football
- 12:20Speaker 2: down the field. So it's a little bit different. And
- 12:23Speaker 2: you know, to segue it into the AJ Brown conversation
- 12:26Speaker 2: at his slower start to camp, I think a lot
- 12:28Speaker 2: of the things that you're seeing with Kashan Boody are
- 12:31Speaker 2: the trust to kind of just put the ball up
- 12:34Speaker 2: and expect him to make plays at the catch point.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And I think that Drake May needs to develop that
- 12:39Speaker 2: trust in AJ Brown because AJ Brown is a similar
- 12:42Speaker 2: type of player. Like you might look at it and
- 12:44Speaker 2: say the corner is kind of in his hip pocket,
- 12:47Speaker 2: but if you put it on AJ Brown outside shoulder
- 12:50Speaker 2: in the bucket, just like Kaysehan Boody, He's going to
- 12:53Speaker 2: box the corner out and make the catch. Those are
- 12:55Speaker 2: the types of things that I think are coming with that.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And you know, just segueing into AJB Brown and Romeo
- 13:01Speaker 2: Dobs AJ Brown specifically, I know there's a lot of
- 13:04Speaker 2: numbers out there. You know, Drake May is what three
- 13:06Speaker 2: for ten with an interceptions growing to AJ Brown is
- 13:09Speaker 2: a big number that's getting out there. I just I
- 13:13Speaker 2: feel like I'm seeing a little bit of overreaction with
- 13:16Speaker 2: with AJ Brown and Drake May right now. I'm not
- 13:19Speaker 2: at all concerned about it, and I just would be
- 13:22Speaker 2: really weary of putting out It's four days into training camp.
- 13:27Speaker 2: The stats are the stats, but they're misleading in my opinion.
- 13:30Speaker 2: I think a lot of the things that are going
- 13:31Speaker 2: on with Drake May and AJ Brown right now are
- 13:34Speaker 2: mental more than they are physical. I don't look at
- 13:36Speaker 2: AJ Brown and say he's lost a step, he looks
- 13:39Speaker 2: a little slow, he looks like he's you know, a
- 13:41Speaker 2: little stiff, or anything like that. I look at it
- 13:44Speaker 2: and say, Drake May threw to his outside shoulder and
- 13:47Speaker 2: he curled inside, Or Drake May thought he was gonna
- 13:51Speaker 2: sit the route down and he kept running. You know,
- 13:53Speaker 2: that was one of those the other day. You know,
- 13:55Speaker 2: the crosser that Drake May threw a pick on that
- 13:58Speaker 2: Craig Woodson ended up with on day too, that I
- 14:01Speaker 2: put on. Drake May just threw it high, like he's
- 14:03Speaker 2: wide open in the middle of the field. So if
- 14:05Speaker 2: you take away the practice interception that goes on the
- 14:08Speaker 2: stat ledger and instead you say that Drake May is
- 14:11Speaker 2: actually four for ten throwing for a J Brown with
- 14:14Speaker 2: like a big play on a deep over route. Doesn't
- 14:16Speaker 2: that like that one thing can just like change it
- 14:19Speaker 2: instantly as to how you might feel about the situation.
- 14:22Speaker 2: So I think we are way too early for some
- 14:25Speaker 2: of the the uh you know, just we're going a
- 14:29Speaker 2: little bit overboard for with AJ Brown because I think
- 14:32Speaker 2: he's had he's built it up where he's like built
- 14:34Speaker 2: up the resume right in the cachet to just build
- 14:37Speaker 2: your trust that he's going to figure it out, and
- 14:38Speaker 2: they're going to figure it.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Out, and we're probably gonna hear a lot about how
- 14:42Speaker 1: Randy Moss wasn't good in camp in two thousand and seven.
- 14:45Speaker 1: All at this too. Credit to Brian Hines who went
- 14:48Speaker 1: back and found this. So yesterday was the fourth day
- 14:50Speaker 1: of practice, right, Drake May missed AJ Brown twice kind
- 14:55Speaker 1: of badly in seven's, but then had a couple quick
- 14:57Speaker 1: completions with him in eleven's Day four camp last year,
- 15:00Speaker 1: Drake May throwing his Stephan Diggs missed him badly in sevens,
- 15:03Speaker 1: then had a couple of quick completions in elevens. It
- 15:05Speaker 1: took it a minute with Diggs last year too, So
- 15:07Speaker 1: like I guess you got to ask yourself and you
- 15:09Speaker 1: gotta be honest with it, Like where is the point
- 15:11Speaker 1: where you start to go from It's early in camp,
- 15:13Speaker 1: they're building chemistry. AJ Brown has kind of built up this.
- 15:17Speaker 1: You know, he has a reputation you can give a
- 15:19Speaker 1: time to like, Okay, why aren't they clicking, why aren't
- 15:22Speaker 1: they on the same page. I think once you get
- 15:23Speaker 1: into the into the joint practices is probably when you
- 15:27Speaker 1: start to talk about that. So I think it's worth noting.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And I'd say the same with Romeo Dobbs and even
- 15:32Speaker 1: like we'll get to Eli Raid and Eli HD and
- 15:34Speaker 1: is an awesome start to camp in terms of I'm
- 15:36Speaker 1: getting open, Drake May has missed him once or twice too,
- 15:39Speaker 1: So I just think getting on the same page as
- 15:41Speaker 1: some of those new receivers overall is a thing that
- 15:46Speaker 1: he's just kind of working through right now.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah. If there's one thing that I would say about
- 15:49Speaker 2: the AJ Brown thing, and I said this yesterday, I'm
- 15:52Speaker 2: pu two. AJ Brown, especially at this stage of his career,
- 15:55Speaker 2: is not an elite separator, Like he's not somebody that's
- 15:58Speaker 2: going to create like three or four yards of separation.
- 16:01Speaker 2: So you're not gonna necessarily be throwing to him where
- 16:04Speaker 2: he's really wide open like that, especially against man coverage,
- 16:09Speaker 2: especially when he's seeing a lot of Christianzalees, right, Like,
- 16:11Speaker 2: that's not gonna happen very often. So a lot of
- 16:14Speaker 2: the throws that Drake May is gonna make to AJ
- 16:16Speaker 2: Brown this year, are gonna be kind of throwing him
- 16:19Speaker 2: open or trusting him to win fifty to fifty balls.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And that's I think it's something that's always going to
- 16:24Speaker 2: be a little bit of a work in progress. Like
- 16:26Speaker 2: there's gonna be a lot of comebacks where AJ Brown
- 16:28Speaker 2: just kind of boxes out the guy, or digs where
- 16:30Speaker 2: AJ Brown shields the catch point breaking into the middle
- 16:34Speaker 2: of the field, or you know, go balls like he
- 16:36Speaker 2: throws to Kishan Boodie where the guy's draped all over him,
- 16:39Speaker 2: but he's just stronger and bigger and better at the
- 16:42Speaker 2: catch point in the corner. Those are not necessarily things
- 16:45Speaker 2: that you're gonna see right away. Like that's gonna take time.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Like you said, joint practices, I'm not saying, don't talk
- 16:52Speaker 2: about it and like you know, act like your head
- 16:55Speaker 2: is in the sand. But I would even say, like
- 16:57Speaker 2: I think you take I would be willing to take
- 16:59Speaker 2: it in the season before I'm really panicked. You know,
- 17:02Speaker 2: if we're like a couple games into it in September,
- 17:05Speaker 2: you know, Seattle or whatever, like then I maybe start
- 17:07Speaker 2: to worry about it a little bit. With AJ Brown
- 17:10Speaker 2: right now, I'm just I think, like I just said,
- 17:12Speaker 2: He's built up so much equity in the NFL as
- 17:16Speaker 2: an All Pro caliber receiver and one of the best
- 17:18Speaker 2: receivers in football that I'm just willing to give him
- 17:21Speaker 2: that grace. And I guess maybe it's contradictory, but I
- 17:24Speaker 2: don't feel like it is with Romeo Dobbs because I
- 17:26Speaker 2: just haven't. Romeo Dobbs has never had a fifteen hundred
- 17:29Speaker 2: yard season and made an All Pro team like AJ Brown.
- 17:32Speaker 2: So with Romeo Dobbs, like I see a lot of
- 17:35Speaker 2: the similar things where I'm not seeing a ton of
- 17:37Speaker 2: juice or separation from him, and that concerns me because
- 17:42Speaker 2: he's kind of a guy that they had a big
- 17:44Speaker 2: role in mind for. And if I had to say
- 17:47Speaker 2: at this point in camp, where Romeo Dobbs would rank,
- 17:51Speaker 2: just based off of what we've seen in practice in
- 17:54Speaker 2: the effectiveness category amongst Patriots receivers, he's definitely behind Booty.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he's.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Behind Pop Douglas. I think Pop Douglas has had a
- 18:02Speaker 2: better start the camp from than.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Like getting lost. I think in in Gai Shawn Booty's
- 18:07Speaker 1: hot start. Paul doug has also been very good and
- 18:09Speaker 1: very involved. He's there is either third or fourth most
- 18:12Speaker 1: used wide receiver.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah, well, because he brings in We've talked about this.
- 18:16Speaker 2: He brings a different flavor, he brings a different brand
- 18:18Speaker 2: of football.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I'm just saying when they go to so when they're
- 18:23Speaker 1: in twelve, right, Yeah, it's mainly a J Brown with
- 18:26Speaker 1: either Dobs or Booty right their base receiver. When they
- 18:29Speaker 1: go to eleven, Pop's usually the third guy. I know
- 18:32Speaker 1: you mentioned they've done some with those other three as
- 18:34Speaker 1: kind of that. I don't know what we'll have to
- 18:35Speaker 1: come up with a name for that package, the big eleven,
- 18:39Speaker 1: the wide receiver, jumbo, big eleven could work something like
- 18:42Speaker 1: that eleven. Okay, well, but what about when Mac Collins
- 18:45Speaker 1: comes on the field, bigger eleven.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I guess that's true, But then maybe that's still big
- 18:49Speaker 2: eleven because like we're replacing Mac, like you're gonna be replaced.
- 18:53Speaker 1: But you get like they've done a little bit of that.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But whether it's Brown and Dobs or Brown and Booty,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I don't know how much they've done of Booty and Dobbs.
- 19:00Speaker 1: But when it's those guys on the outside, Pop Douglas
- 19:03Speaker 1: is the starting slot receiver right now, like he is,
- 19:05Speaker 1: He's probably technically like the fourth guy on the depth chart,
- 19:09Speaker 1: but he's their third receiver.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Well, and I think it stems back to something that
- 19:13Speaker 2: I've been beating the drum about. Is it he offers
- 19:16Speaker 2: a different skill set in a different level of speed
- 19:19Speaker 2: that if they have in quickness, AJ Brown, Mac Collins,
- 19:23Speaker 2: Kishon Booty, Romeo Dobbs, is their four guys that they're
- 19:27Speaker 2: kind of rolling with. It's just a little bit slow.
- 19:30Speaker 2: It's it is what it is. So Tomorrow Douglas, his explosiveness,
- 19:35Speaker 2: his quickness that you mentioned, even his vertical stretchability is
- 19:39Speaker 2: speed slot ability.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Which I think is underused.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Like those are all elements that are just bring
- 19:44Speaker 2: a different flavor to the table, and I think that
- 19:46Speaker 2: they see it that way too. But to go back
- 19:49Speaker 2: to the Dobbs point, Booty definitely pop. I think definitely.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I would say I'm still saying that Aj Brown has
- 19:57Speaker 2: been better than Romeo Dobbs, even though it hasn't been.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Yes, that's kind of by default, Like Matt Collins.
- 20:03Speaker 2: And Kyle Williams, I haven't played a ton. You've got
- 20:06Speaker 2: a ton of looks, but at best, I think you're
- 20:09Speaker 2: saying that he's your fourth most effective receiver right now.
- 20:12Speaker 2: And I think at times we've seen them just say
- 20:15Speaker 2: we're gonna go Booty Brown, Douglas because those are the
- 20:18Speaker 2: three guys that have earned the reps right and so
- 20:21Speaker 2: I'm not saying that I'm giving up on Romeo Dobbs,
- 20:25Speaker 2: but it's definitely been a slower start. So I guess
- 20:27Speaker 2: I'm underreacting to AJ Brown and I'm overreacting to Romeo.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I kind of put him in the same bucket, and
- 20:31Speaker 1: that doesn't mean they'll end up in the same place.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It's just it's something to watch. The chemistry is maybe
- 20:35Speaker 1: not just there yet, but you know, he can get
- 20:38Speaker 1: the chemistry with AJ Brown, maybe not get there with
- 20:41Speaker 1: Romeo Dobbs or vice versa or whatever. So I think
- 20:44Speaker 1: they're both in something to watch category.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree, I would just I was hoping
- 20:50Speaker 2: to see, you know, we were kind of talking up this.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Romeo Dobbs is the possession receiver, the chain moving receiver.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Brown's the big play guy. We just haven't seen that
- 21:01Speaker 2: hit yet quite the way I think that they wanted to.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Next one here, going over to the defense after some
- 21:07Speaker 2: offensive points, you got to talk Christian Zalez a little
- 21:09Speaker 2: bit I think my biggest takeaway and we can talk
- 21:13Speaker 2: about the contract and what he said yesterday too, but
- 21:16Speaker 2: he just looks terrific. I mean, he looks like he's
- 21:18Speaker 2: in midseason booty.
- 21:19Speaker 1: So I said this the other day, Booty's probably been
- 21:21Speaker 1: the best player in camp. If it's not Kaishan Booty
- 21:24Speaker 1: is Christianzalez.
- 21:25Speaker 2: And I feel like I keep saying that. But you know,
- 21:27Speaker 2: quarterback notwithstanding, I think quarterbacks a different position, different thing.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Every year they bring in new guys. You know, last year,
- 21:35Speaker 2: their big ticket item was probably Milton Williams or Stefan Diggs.
- 21:38Speaker 2: This year, it's AJ Brown and Christian Zales. To me,
- 21:41Speaker 2: just keeps being the best player on the field in
- 21:44Speaker 2: a Patriots practice, not you know, quarterback withstanding. So I
- 21:48Speaker 2: think Christianganzales just looks like he terrific, looks like he's
- 21:51Speaker 2: in mid season form. If there's one thing I would
- 21:53Speaker 2: say to put on the A. J. Brown thing too,
- 21:56Speaker 2: He's not going to go up against one of the
- 21:58Speaker 2: best corners in football every single week. So you know,
- 22:01Speaker 2: if Christian Zales isn't the best corner in football, he's
- 22:04Speaker 2: the secondary. He's the third best corner in football. And
- 22:06Speaker 2: so AJ Brown is going to see lesser competition at
- 22:09Speaker 2: some point than what he's seen. I give Gonzo a
- 22:12Speaker 2: ton of credit. I think a lot of players would
- 22:15Speaker 2: have hold held in at the very least. I think
- 22:18Speaker 2: a lot of players in his situation would have held
- 22:21Speaker 2: out entirely. I think a lot of players would have
- 22:23Speaker 2: came into camp and gone through the motions or maybe
- 22:26Speaker 2: even been out of shape. And he has done the
- 22:29Speaker 2: total opposite. He has basically said I'm coming, I'm healthy,
- 22:33Speaker 2: I'm in shape, I'm going to practice in full. We'll
- 22:36Speaker 2: see if he continues to do that as almost like
- 22:38Speaker 2: a way to entice them to give him the contract
- 22:41Speaker 2: more right, instead of going the other direction. I just
- 22:44Speaker 2: give him a ton of credit for all of it.
- 22:47Speaker 2: How he's handled it with us, how he's handled it
- 22:49Speaker 2: on the practice field, how hard he's been practicing, even
- 22:53Speaker 2: though he doesn't have that long term security yet. I
- 22:56Speaker 2: don't think a lot of players would have done the same,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and he's done it. So kudos to him.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, he's been excellent in every way. And
- 23:04Speaker 1: you know, we'll see when the pads come on if
- 23:06Speaker 1: he continues that that level of participation. But he's shown up.
- 23:09Speaker 1: He's played, he's played well. I think he said all
- 23:12Speaker 1: the right things. You know, Vrabel mentioned he wants to
- 23:15Speaker 1: be a captain. This is captain like behavior and obviously
- 23:18Speaker 1: captain like level of play too. So you couldn't outside
- 23:22Speaker 1: of the contract actually getting done, I guess you really
- 23:24Speaker 1: couldn't ask for any more from Christian Zalez through four
- 23:27Speaker 1: days of camp.
- 23:28Speaker 2: No. I mean, we've seen it across the NFL with
- 23:31Speaker 2: guys that mostly nowadays they hold in because they don't
- 23:34Speaker 2: want to get fined for not being there, so they
- 23:36Speaker 2: hold in. But it happens all the time, and a
- 23:39Speaker 2: lot of these guys at that position, specifically younger players
- 23:43Speaker 2: looking for their second contracts, have had hold ins, and
- 23:46Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez has just not done that. So kudos to
- 23:49Speaker 2: him on that. On the contract, a couple of things yesterday,
- 23:53Speaker 2: Denzel Ward gets a little sweetener, gets a little extension.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Is only a two year extension. He's a little bit older.
- 23:59Speaker 2: But the number I thought was very telling. Thirty one
- 24:02Speaker 2: point one million, which is one hundred thousand dollars more
- 24:05Speaker 2: than what Trent McDuffie signed with the Rams earlier. You
- 24:08Speaker 2: texted me just double it right, because it's a two
- 24:11Speaker 2: year sixty two million dollar contract or sixty twenty. Yeah,
- 24:15Speaker 2: hey he did no, he he did.
- 24:16Speaker 1: No. You think I would have done that math?
- 24:18Speaker 2: You did do that math. I'll show it to you.
- 24:20Speaker 1: And show me. I don't think I texted that.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I was shocked that you were able to do that math.
- 24:24Speaker 2: He said, just double it.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I thought it just texted you and said, whoa.
- 24:28Speaker 2: No, I'm telling you go back and look.
- 24:30Speaker 1: I'm looking.
- 24:32Speaker 2: He's so surprised that he did math is that he
- 24:34Speaker 2: doesn't even believe me that he did math.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Oh no, you sent me something and said lol, yes,
- 24:43Speaker 1: and then I replied it was and then I replied
- 24:46Speaker 1: with the Denzel word tweet and said double lol. I
- 24:50Speaker 1: meant like you were laughing at something, and I said,
- 24:53Speaker 1: this is also funny.
- 24:54Speaker 2: I'm trying to give you cry.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I was so confused by what you said.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I thought I thought you did the math, and you
- 25:00Speaker 2: were like, I get I get it. I thought you
- 25:03Speaker 2: you did the math. I was giving you credit for
- 25:04Speaker 2: actually knowing math for one.
- 25:07Speaker 4: No.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I just was like it was.
- 25:10Speaker 2: So kind.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Barth isn't good at math, and you're not good at comprehension.
- 25:13Speaker 2: It's right.
- 25:14Speaker 1: It was just kind of like weird news back to back.
- 25:16Speaker 1: So because who was expecting Denzel Ward to reset the market?
- 25:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so Denzel Ward barely but reset the market.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Yeah kind of.
- 25:23Speaker 2: So one metric, Trent McDuffie is definitely more in the
- 25:27Speaker 2: category of Christian Zales just where he is in his career.
- 25:30Speaker 2: But that thirty one million dollar a year mark is
- 25:35Speaker 2: the top of the market right now.
- 25:37Speaker 1: For corner thirty one point one.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so are we talking about Christian Zales being thirty two?
- 25:43Speaker 2: Are we talking about him wanting even more than that?
- 25:46Speaker 2: Devin Witherspoon obviously involved in this as well, but it
- 25:49Speaker 2: seems like from a just a pure numbers standpoint, the
- 25:53Speaker 2: number to beat is thirty one point one at the moment. Now, Yeah,
- 25:56Speaker 2: am I saying they're going to get it done if
- 25:58Speaker 2: the Patriots coming at thirty one point two? Probably not.
- 26:01Speaker 2: But if the Patriots come in closer to thirty two
- 26:04Speaker 2: or over thirty two, then I think that we're talking
- 26:07Speaker 2: about that. And I understand people always look at it
- 26:10Speaker 2: and say, well, why do you care about the contract?
- 26:13Speaker 2: It's just money. I don't care about the contract. I'm
- 26:15Speaker 2: just telling you, if I was the team, if I
- 26:18Speaker 2: was negotiating on behalf of you know, the Patriots, says
- 26:20Speaker 2: Elliott Wolf. I would say, well, the market, Christian is
- 26:23Speaker 2: thirty one point one. Denzel Ward just reset the market
- 26:27Speaker 2: to thirty one point one. McDuffie a month ago got
- 26:30Speaker 2: thirty one from the Rams, so we're gonna give you
- 26:33Speaker 2: thirty one to five or thirty two. That's where it's at.
- 26:36Speaker 2: So there's that piece of it. There's what he said
- 26:38Speaker 2: to the media yesterday. But what do you think in
- 26:41Speaker 2: terms of that number being set at thirty one right now?
- 26:44Speaker 1: I mean you look at I think you take Ward
- 26:48Speaker 1: out of it. That's a weird one. I don't realized
- 26:50Speaker 1: he had no money left on his contract. This is
- 26:51Speaker 1: the second time he's broken the record. His last contract
- 26:54Speaker 1: broke the record. But there's no guaranteed money for this year.
- 26:58Speaker 1: When you went from guard instingly to McDuffie, it went
- 27:03Speaker 1: up a million. Yeah, and that's year to year, right
- 27:07Speaker 1: So I think McDuffie's kind of in his own window.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think it goes up a million again. I think
- 27:12Speaker 1: the number is probably thirty two or thirty two to one,
- 27:16Speaker 1: and then I think whoever signs first and second, and
- 27:19Speaker 1: maybe it goes from thirty two to thirty two one
- 27:23Speaker 1: two five, So it's hey, it's a bigger increase, right,
- 27:27Speaker 1: You're you're winning by the amount you win by is
- 27:30Speaker 1: slightly increasing over how much the last guy won by.
- 27:33Speaker 1: That kind of thing. I wonder if there's gonna be
- 27:34Speaker 1: some of that too. So my guess is it's like
- 27:36Speaker 1: thirty two, it's thirty two, and then like thirty two
- 27:40Speaker 1: one two five is what the two deals are gonna
- 27:42Speaker 1: end up being.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that that's fair. I mean, obviously they're
- 27:45Speaker 2: younger than Ward, so that's a big part of it.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta throw the award one. I just think
- 27:50Speaker 1: that I honestly don't think it impacts it. I don't
- 27:53Speaker 1: think the next guy who's gonna sign a thirty one
- 27:54Speaker 1: one to begin with. I think whether it is Gonzalz
- 27:58Speaker 1: withspoon is going to be thirty two. I think the
- 28:00Speaker 1: Ward thing, although technically yes, that one part of it
- 28:02Speaker 1: got reset because the total the total value obviously was
- 28:06Speaker 1: not a record. I don't think the guaranteed money guarantee, well,
- 28:09Speaker 1: I thought.
- 28:10Speaker 2: You said double it, because sixty two point two with
- 28:12Speaker 2: like fifty something and guaranteed money is what the Ward got, right,
- 28:17Speaker 2: So if you if you double that, you know, we
- 28:19Speaker 2: get to about one twenty four point four with about
- 28:22Speaker 2: one hundred million or so guarantee. And that's a format
- 28:25Speaker 2: that's that would be thirty one point one.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be thirty two.
- 28:29Speaker 2: So at thirty two we're talking about, you know, somewhere.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Maybe the guarantees stay the same.
- 28:34Speaker 2: We're talking about sure by four year contract for one
- 28:37Speaker 2: hundred and thirty two million in total value and probably
- 28:41Speaker 2: around one ten and guaranteed money.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Say that again, four years, Yeah, one.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Hundred and thirty two million guaranteed or a full.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Value thirty three.
- 28:50Speaker 2: That would be thirty two over four. It's thirty two.
- 28:54Speaker 2: I just did it. I did the math bad.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it happens, man when I when I go quick,
- 28:59Speaker 1: it's not good. Yeah, one twenty eight probably just over
- 29:01Speaker 1: one hundred million guaranteed.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the deal. Yeap. So that's where we're at
- 29:06Speaker 2: with gonzales I thought they you know, the media obviously
- 29:11Speaker 2: peppered him with a lot of contract questions. Yesterday. He
- 29:14Speaker 2: tried to keep it out of the media as much
- 29:17Speaker 2: as he possibly could. Uh, mister Kraft, you know, said
- 29:19Speaker 2: what he said on the first day of training camp.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I know that your station, I'm sure is talking a
- 29:24Speaker 2: lot about that and that back and forth.
- 29:26Speaker 5: Uh.
- 29:26Speaker 2: But for the most part, I think when you get
- 29:29Speaker 2: down to it, the number that the market's at right
- 29:32Speaker 2: now is thirty one and Ward, just like Patrick Surtan
- 29:37Speaker 2: last year. So Stingley and Sauce Gardner signed their contracts
- 29:40Speaker 2: at around thirty yeah, and then the Broncos gave Patrick
- 29:44Speaker 2: Surtan a sweetener to get him to thirty, right, because
- 29:47Speaker 2: that had been the market. So when McDuffie signed for
- 29:50Speaker 2: thirty one and Ward came calling and said, I have
- 29:53Speaker 2: no money left on you know, guaranteed money left on
- 29:56Speaker 2: my contract, what do they do? They gave him thirty
- 29:58Speaker 2: one point one, right, So the veterans are coming right
- 30:00Speaker 2: in over that number to just have them be at
- 30:03Speaker 2: the right place in the pecking order. Like you said,
- 30:06Speaker 2: the new guys, that's a different number, you know, that's
- 30:09Speaker 2: a different situation. Let's stick on defense. I have a
- 30:11Speaker 2: couple more offensive ones, but we're on defense now. Yesterday
- 30:16Speaker 2: we saw Carlton Davis and Charles Woods. They practice looked
- 30:21Speaker 2: like Carlton Davis maybe was you know. I hate to speculate,
- 30:23Speaker 2: but maybe like a hamstring or a lower body injury
- 30:26Speaker 2: or something like that. Charles Woods, I didn't see it
- 30:29Speaker 2: happen live, so I'm not exactly sure, but he was
- 30:32Speaker 2: being helped off, so I think maybe that was also
- 30:35Speaker 2: lower body related. So those two guys leave practice. I
- 30:40Speaker 2: got two things on this one. We have a lot
- 30:43Speaker 2: of questions about cornerback depth. I think we're about to
- 30:46Speaker 2: find out if any of these corners on the back
- 30:48Speaker 2: end of the depth chart can play, because they're all
- 30:50Speaker 2: going to start to get some reps opposite Christian Gonzalez
- 30:53Speaker 2: and yesterday we saw Kendelvilldor For the most part, Woods left,
- 30:56Speaker 2: but maybe you know, PUNTI or minor one of those
- 30:59Speaker 2: guys get some run as well. The hierarchy I built out,
- 31:04Speaker 2: I came up with a little bit of a hierarchy here.
- 31:07Speaker 2: I think the Patriots have some hierarchy or some tiers.
- 31:10Speaker 2: You know, I love my tears. Yeah, they have some
- 31:12Speaker 2: tiers to the corner back room right now. Tier one obviously, Gonzales, Jones, Davis.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I think those are the Tier one starter, you know,
- 31:20Speaker 2: starters as tier guys. I think Charles Woods is in
- 31:23Speaker 2: his own tier. I think Charles Woods is top back up,
- 31:27Speaker 2: clearly the top backup fourth corner. Not only only because
- 31:31Speaker 2: he was the first guy up yesterday when Carlon Davis
- 31:33Speaker 2: went down, but I'm sure you've noticed they've also been
- 31:36Speaker 2: wrapping him a lot in the slot with the backup defense,
- 31:39Speaker 2: which tells me that they want to cross train him
- 31:41Speaker 2: at both inside and outside corner, so that if Marcus
- 31:44Speaker 2: Jones gets hurt, then Charles Woods has on.
- 31:46Speaker 1: He's just your fourth corner across the board, right because.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Last year he came in late, so I think that
- 31:51Speaker 2: they got him up to speed at outside corner, but
- 31:53Speaker 2: he wasn't up to speed so much at slot. So
- 31:57Speaker 2: now I feel like Charles Woods is like, you know,
- 31:59Speaker 2: we always talk of the Jason mccordy role. It feels
- 32:02Speaker 2: like Charles Woods is kind of elevated into that true
- 32:04Speaker 2: fourth corner, you know, rotational guy.
- 32:07Speaker 5: Yep.
- 32:07Speaker 2: The third tier then is the guys that I think
- 32:10Speaker 2: that are competing for the roster. You know, guys that
- 32:12Speaker 2: are going to be the fifth corner, maybe six if
- 32:14Speaker 2: they carry six vildor minor prunty. You know, I think
- 32:17Speaker 2: those three guys are probably competing for one or two
- 32:20Speaker 2: roster spots at most, so I think Woods, as long
- 32:24Speaker 2: as this injury isn't serious, I think Woods is safe.
- 32:27Speaker 2: I think what's gonna make this team along with the
- 32:30Speaker 2: top three obviously, and then those other guys I think
- 32:32Speaker 2: are kind of vying for that fifth spot.
- 32:34Speaker 1: I wonder if Bildor is a little closer than you,
- 32:36Speaker 1: maybe giving him credit for he got a lot of
- 32:38Speaker 1: run this spring, and he did. Yeah, I just wonder
- 32:42Speaker 1: if he's close. Yeah, the younger guys, I thought mar
- 32:45Speaker 1: Marcellus dile might get some more run. I thought kron
- 32:48Speaker 1: Prunty might get some more run. I'll be curious when
- 32:49Speaker 1: they get into more special team stuff how he's involved,
- 32:52Speaker 1: because I do think that there we talked about this,
- 32:54Speaker 1: I do think there's a chance that he makes his
- 32:58Speaker 1: team just as a special teamer, as kind of like
- 32:59Speaker 1: a brain and Bolden type where maybe he can give
- 33:01Speaker 1: you a couple snaps a corner here and there if
- 33:03Speaker 1: you need, but he's really in it for the kicking game.
- 33:06Speaker 1: But yeah, I haven't really seen any of those younger
- 33:08Speaker 1: guys step up. It's it's mostly been Woods, like you said,
- 33:10Speaker 1: and then Vildor.
- 33:11Speaker 2: The reason why I had Woods a little bit head
- 33:14Speaker 2: of Vildor is not necessarily usage, but just effectiveness. I
- 33:17Speaker 2: think Wood's just been better, yeah than Vildor. Vildor has
- 33:21Speaker 2: gotten beat in a few times, and I thought Woods,
- 33:23Speaker 2: even though maybe some of it was chemistry related, I
- 33:26Speaker 2: thought Woods had some really good reps against AJ Brown
- 33:29Speaker 2: yesterday after Carlton Davis left. So I just thought in
- 33:32Speaker 2: general that Ville Door's been a little bit up and down.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I thought Woods has been pretty effective. So I had
- 33:37Speaker 2: him in a tier higher by himself. There. That's cornerback
- 33:41Speaker 2: that we're gonna see. We're gonna see a lot of
- 33:43Speaker 2: Woods if he's healthy, Villdor, Minor Punty, all those guys.
- 33:47Speaker 2: If Davis and Woods are both missing, then we're going
- 33:50Speaker 2: to see a lot of that. That tier three group. Yeah,
- 33:52Speaker 2: whoever can practice the best out of that group I
- 33:55Speaker 2: think is gonna end up making this.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I still want to see a little more of a dial. Yeah,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I still I thought he had a good summer last year.
- 34:01Speaker 1: We know he can play in the slot. It's just
- 34:03Speaker 1: where's he at coming off that that torn acl.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Yep, fair enough. Last note I had on defense, and
- 34:08Speaker 2: then we'll move back over to the offense. You know,
- 34:11Speaker 2: I have a dream of them being a three safety
- 34:14Speaker 2: team and then playing that three safety package. They've been
- 34:17Speaker 2: doing a lot of it. I don't know how effective
- 34:19Speaker 2: it's been, and I feel like my dream is maybe
- 34:22Speaker 2: slowly dying a little bit.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and they've been trying everybody too, like.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Because I don't think that Mike Brown's had a great start.
- 34:28Speaker 1: To get no and then del Pettis got a shot,
- 34:30Speaker 1: and then John Saunders got some reps there, so.
- 34:33Speaker 2: They're trying to find it. True in theory, it's a
- 34:36Speaker 2: great thing to have. And we talked to Bayard the
- 34:39Speaker 2: other day and I thought he summed it up exactly
- 34:41Speaker 2: how you would, but it's always good to hear it
- 34:43Speaker 2: from an all pro safety versus you or me. Bayard said, well,
- 34:47Speaker 2: when you play teams that play a lot of thirteen
- 34:50Speaker 2: or twelve, you know, the Rams are kind of doing
- 34:52Speaker 2: that a lot, and everybody's taken that from the Rams.
- 34:54Speaker 2: And it's good to have that package in your back
- 34:57Speaker 2: pocket to be bigger and to match up against multiple
- 35:00Speaker 2: tight ends. But in order to do that, you have
- 35:03Speaker 2: to have the horses to do it right. And if
- 35:06Speaker 2: that package is just not effective, or if the drop
- 35:09Speaker 2: off from having let's say Marcus Jones on the field
- 35:12Speaker 2: or Christian Ellis on the field. Is so big to
- 35:15Speaker 2: having Mike Brown on the field. Well, it's great in
- 35:18Speaker 2: theory to say let's play three safeties, but you got
- 35:20Speaker 2: to have three playable safeties. And right now I'm a
- 35:22Speaker 2: little concerned that they don't have three playable safeties.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I'm just curious. What do you thought of Buyered so
- 35:26Speaker 1: far in camp?
- 35:28Speaker 2: Uh? You know, maybe you know he obviously gave up
- 35:30Speaker 2: the big play to Booty yesterday. Maybe a little bit underwhelmed.
- 35:34Speaker 2: But I think the biggest thing with him, and I
- 35:36Speaker 2: said this when they signed him, yeah he's not a
- 35:39Speaker 2: man coverage guy anymore.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Right, Like you don't want to play him matched.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Up against receiving tight ends or slot receivers like he
- 35:46Speaker 2: doesn't have I don't think he's got the place be
- 35:49Speaker 2: to hang with that anymore. He to me, looks on
- 35:52Speaker 2: tape last year in camp so far this year he's
- 35:56Speaker 2: end of career. Devin mccordy, Right, Like, you watch yeah
- 36:00Speaker 2: them up top, you want them being a field general
- 36:02Speaker 2: back there. You want them putting all everybody where they're
- 36:05Speaker 2: supposed to be. And then when the ball snap, he's
- 36:07Speaker 2: the post safety help or the deep safety help and
- 36:10Speaker 2: he's over the top, you know, and in ballhawking. I
- 36:13Speaker 2: I think that when you see him come down in
- 36:15Speaker 2: the box get matched up against you know, pass catching
- 36:18Speaker 2: tight ends and things like that. Last year that was
- 36:21Speaker 2: a little bit of a struggle. I wouldn't expect it
- 36:23Speaker 2: to be any different. So there's that too. Like in theory,
- 36:27Speaker 2: you could put Byert or Woodson in that like slot
- 36:30Speaker 2: safety role and then have a third free safety. Right
- 36:34Speaker 2: you know that Deron Harmon that can play that role.
- 36:37Speaker 2: But I don't think that that's Mike Brown or John Saunders,
- 36:40Speaker 2: Like that's not there. They're bigger guys. That's not really
- 36:43Speaker 2: their specialty either. So when I look at teams that
- 36:46Speaker 2: major in these three safety packages, you know, Baltimore, the Chargers,
- 36:50Speaker 2: the Seahawks, Like what do they all have in common,
- 36:52Speaker 2: Kyle Hamilton, Derwin James Nick, Ammon Warri they have a freak,
- 36:57Speaker 2: Like they have a guy that can just play that
- 37:00Speaker 2: at an extremely high level. Uh. Not that that means
- 37:03Speaker 2: the Patriots are like not gonna win the Super Bowl
- 37:05Speaker 2: because they don't have a good third safety.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Right, They're not gonna win the Super playing that way?
- 37:09Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I Uh, Yeah, My thing with Bayard has been I
- 37:13Speaker 1: feel like there's been a bunch of big catches you
- 37:15Speaker 1: mentioned the one with Booty, the one with Henry, where
- 37:17Speaker 1: I like, I've written down if I myself, I keep
- 37:20Speaker 1: writing good coverage from Kevin Byard, But so and so
- 37:23Speaker 1: comes down with the ball, So like, yeah, he's not
- 37:24Speaker 1: getting beat. He's in the right place at the right
- 37:26Speaker 1: time a lot, he's just kind of losing at the
- 37:28Speaker 1: catch point. And maybe look, there could be an element
- 37:31Speaker 1: of they're not wearing pads and.
- 37:33Speaker 2: He doesn't want to take guys to the ground, right.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to be a good teammate. You don't
- 37:37Speaker 1: want to be hurting guys in July. That's not smart football.
- 37:40Speaker 1: But it just kind of has been. It has been
- 37:42Speaker 1: weird that I feel like I like what I've seen
- 37:45Speaker 1: from him, but he's also given up like a number
- 37:47Speaker 1: of catches.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we did a pretty good job in
- 37:51Speaker 2: the last Forge in Foxboro episode two of just highlighting
- 37:54Speaker 2: how much of a leader he's going to be for
- 37:56Speaker 2: those team. So I think that that's a big part
- 37:58Speaker 2: of it too with Kevin Byard. But I said it
- 38:01Speaker 2: at the time when they draft, when they signed him
- 38:02Speaker 2: in free agency. He's no longer a guy that I
- 38:06Speaker 2: want matched up against tight ends on third down. I
- 38:09Speaker 2: don't want him in those types of foot races running
- 38:11Speaker 2: across the field with slot receivers and tight ends. I
- 38:14Speaker 2: don't think that that's his forte anymore. I don't think
- 38:16Speaker 2: that's in there anymore a lot of the way, the
- 38:19Speaker 2: same way it wasn't for Devin mccordy in you know,
- 38:21Speaker 2: twenty twenty, twenty twenty one. Yeah, that didn't mean Devin
- 38:24Speaker 2: mccorty wasn't a useful player or a good player. That
- 38:27Speaker 2: just wasn't what he was doing anymore. So you know,
- 38:29Speaker 2: you mentioned the play to Henry, not that Henry's a burner,
- 38:32Speaker 2: but that's a really good skilled tight end, you know,
- 38:35Speaker 2: good receiving tight end. I don't know if Bayard's covering
- 38:38Speaker 2: those guys anymore for them, like when they play Buffalo.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I don't really want to see him on Dalton Kinkad
- 38:43Speaker 2: on a third down, Like I that's what you have
- 38:46Speaker 2: a young buck in Craig Woodson, Like, go put him
- 38:48Speaker 2: on Dalton kincaid if the safety has to cover the
- 38:50Speaker 2: tight end. So we'll see you about the three safety
- 38:53Speaker 2: package but I'm starting to lose a little hope there.
- 38:55Speaker 2: I don't know if they have the horses for it yet.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Maybe that's a next off season thing, you know, can't
- 38:59Speaker 2: do everything sort of thing. If the third safety is
- 39:02Speaker 2: your biggest concern, then you don't have a whole lot
- 39:04Speaker 2: of concerns. I would say, a couple more on offense
- 39:07Speaker 2: and then we'll do three up, three down. We've gone
- 39:10Speaker 2: forty minutes into the show and have not really talked
- 39:12Speaker 2: too much about Drake may with that kind of camp,
- 39:15Speaker 2: that kind of camp, But I do want to talk
- 39:16Speaker 2: a little bit about it, just our thoughts on it,
- 39:19Speaker 2: because I do think he started a little slow in
- 39:20Speaker 2: some of these practices. He's had a little bit of
- 39:23Speaker 2: the sprays at times in some of these practices. But
- 39:26Speaker 2: the downfield throws, the big time throws, as PFF would
- 39:30Speaker 2: chart them as those dimes are still there. I mean,
- 39:33Speaker 2: we saw it yesterday. We saw a couple of them
- 39:35Speaker 2: towards the end of practice yesterday, so that that's still
- 39:38Speaker 2: there when they want it and when they need it.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Maybe the short intermediate stuff has been a little bit dicey.
- 39:44Speaker 2: We'll see when he developed some of the chemistry with
- 39:46Speaker 2: those guys. Obviously no concern level whatsoever, But just what
- 39:50Speaker 2: has been your impression of Drake so far?
- 39:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean definitely has started some practice slow. He
- 39:55Speaker 1: did this last year. He's done this, I think all
- 39:57Speaker 1: three years. And there was a thing we talked about
- 39:59Speaker 1: a couple years ago with him maybe coming out too
- 40:01Speaker 1: amped up for certain games, and maybe that's happening for
- 40:03Speaker 1: these practices because every miss is high and or long.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I don't think he's had one underthrown camp. No, everything's
- 40:11Speaker 1: been too much, So maybe he just needs to settle
- 40:13Speaker 1: in the big thing for me, not even what he's doing,
- 40:15Speaker 1: and obviously with throwing the ball and obviously the deep
- 40:18Speaker 1: ball throwing is great, just the confidence, the confidence in
- 40:23Speaker 1: his decision making on the field, the confidence he's handling
- 40:25Speaker 1: himself with between plays, talking to us, all of that.
- 40:29Speaker 1: This was something I talked about a little bit in
- 40:31Speaker 1: the offseason that I don't think he wasn't a leader
- 40:35Speaker 1: last year. I don't think he was a bad leader,
- 40:36Speaker 1: but you had these big veteran voices in that room.
- 40:41Speaker 1: It was Stefan Diggs giving the pregame speech on the
- 40:44Speaker 1: field to everybody, not Trake May And I think that
- 40:46Speaker 1: if that's what comes naturally great. I'm not knocking May
- 40:48Speaker 1: for that. There is something to be said for the
- 40:51Speaker 1: starting quarterback recognizing, hey, this guy has everybody's ear. I'm
- 40:55Speaker 1: gonna let him do it. I don't need to be
- 40:57Speaker 1: that guy. But Diggs is gone, you know, Morgan Moses,
- 41:02Speaker 1: who knows how much longer does he have here? Some
- 41:04Speaker 1: of those other veterans moving on. Hunter Henry's in a
- 41:06Speaker 1: contract year. So I don't think Drake May was a
- 41:11Speaker 1: bad leader last year, but he wasn't exactly at the
- 41:13Speaker 1: front of that line either, And I think this is
- 41:16Speaker 1: the year, especially after the season he had that like,
- 41:20Speaker 1: hey man, you got to get to the front of
- 41:22Speaker 1: that line, Like it's got to become his team? Was it? Like?
- 41:25Speaker 1: As a leader, I it was Stefan diggs offense last year,
- 41:29Speaker 1: maybe more than Drake May's. And I think that's just
- 41:31Speaker 1: the way the cards fell, and that's fine, But now
- 41:34Speaker 1: that's got to change, and like, how does Drake May
- 41:36Speaker 1: look stepping into that role? And I think so far
- 41:38Speaker 1: that box has been checked emphatically. I think he's been
- 41:40Speaker 1: great in that regard.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so I I would agree with your assessment in
- 41:45Speaker 2: terms of his actual play Yeah, feels more like his
- 41:51Speaker 2: accuracy has been a little bit inconsistent. But I haven't
- 41:53Speaker 2: had any concerns about his decisiveness, and I feel like
- 41:56Speaker 2: he's making the right decisions and he's getting the ball
- 41:58Speaker 2: out on time. It's not like these players look like
- 42:00Speaker 2: like train wrecks or anything like that. It's just he's
- 42:03Speaker 2: been a little bit off at times with his accuracy.
- 42:05Speaker 2: So his mastery of this system and Josh mcdaniels's offense.
- 42:09Speaker 2: The only time that I jotted down that I was
- 42:12Speaker 2: a little bit you know, just caught the eye on
- 42:14Speaker 2: one is Carlon Davis. I think it was day two. Yeah,
- 42:17Speaker 2: they butts Carlon Davis from the cornerback spot and he
- 42:20Speaker 2: came in clean and would have clocked him in a game.
- 42:23Speaker 2: So I didn't love to see that, like I would,
- 42:26Speaker 2: you know, he gotta That's still a big part of
- 42:28Speaker 2: his maturation is going to be protections and seeing things
- 42:31Speaker 2: pre snap and getting the ball out of his hands.
- 42:33Speaker 2: But I think he's been decisive. I think he's read
- 42:35Speaker 2: the field well. He just hasn't always been super accurate
- 42:39Speaker 2: at times. So I would rather that because he'll get
- 42:42Speaker 2: control of his accuracy, you know, it's early. Once he
- 42:45Speaker 2: throws more, once he gets into a rhythm more, I'm
- 42:47Speaker 2: not concerned about that. If he was back to kind
- 42:50Speaker 2: of holding the ball and looking like a young player again,
- 42:53Speaker 2: that would have been more concerning to me than oh,
- 42:55Speaker 2: he kind of sprayed that one a little bit, or that,
- 42:57Speaker 2: you know, missed that guy on this one or whatever.
- 42:59Speaker 2: So you know, I really think that, you know that
- 43:02Speaker 2: I'd rather take that now. Yeah, I think it does
- 43:05Speaker 2: take him some time, though. I think it takes them
- 43:07Speaker 2: some time in games. I think it takes them some
- 43:08Speaker 2: time in practice. The beginning of yesterday's practice was a
- 43:12Speaker 2: little dicey. By the end of yesterday's practice he was
- 43:14Speaker 2: kind of lighting it up.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, like, oh no, I thought the second
- 43:17Speaker 1: half of yessay's practice he was excellent.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's just the way it is with him. I
- 43:20Speaker 2: guess you mentioned Eli Reardan.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Speaking of We got a tiny bit of breaking news.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Okay, what is it?
- 43:26Speaker 1: Madden has Hunter Henry. They just released their top ten
- 43:28Speaker 1: tight ends. Where would you put Hunter Henry? Where would
- 43:30Speaker 1: rank him among NFL tight.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Ends in the eight to ten range?
- 43:33Speaker 1: Eighth there they have him right between Sam Laporta and
- 43:36Speaker 1: Tucker Craft. He's an eighty six overall.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Yeah. When Jeremy Faller did his list, yeah, and he
- 43:40Speaker 2: only received votes, I was a little surprised by that.
- 43:44Speaker 2: I mean, this is a guy last year that statistically
- 43:47Speaker 2: was a top tight end by easily.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 2: No, he's not the best blocker, So if you're pulling
- 43:52Speaker 2: people that really care about that sort of thing, maybe
- 43:54Speaker 2: that's a factor. But top ten in receptions, yards, you know,
- 44:00Speaker 2: all the advanced stuff that I love all of it.
- 44:03Speaker 2: So I don't know how you can't put him in
- 44:04Speaker 2: the time.
- 44:04Speaker 1: It's McBride, Kittle, Bowers, Kelsey, Mark Andrews, Dallas Goddard, Sam
- 44:09Speaker 1: Laporte ahead of him. I would say, have no problem
- 44:11Speaker 1: with that. I think that's about right.
- 44:12Speaker 2: So Bowers is in that you need to stay healthy
- 44:15Speaker 2: for us to rank you higher category.
- 44:16Speaker 1: He's in ninety three overall. That's probably part of it. Yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 1: McBride's in ninety nine.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Yeah, because I think Bowers is the best tight end
- 44:21Speaker 2: in football when he's healthy.
- 44:23Speaker 1: McBride was really good, and you think about that, there
- 44:25Speaker 1: was nothing else going on with that offense.
- 44:27Speaker 2: He was really he was.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Able to do what he did real quick. While we're
- 44:30Speaker 1: on it. We're transferring from quarterbacks. Yes, Madden has Drake
- 44:33Speaker 1: May six ninety two overall, Stafford, Alan Burrow, Jackson Mahomes
- 44:37Speaker 1: out of them.
- 44:37Speaker 2: I think that's fair.
- 44:38Speaker 1: I think that's exactly right.
- 44:40Speaker 2: When he does it again, Yeah, if he has an
- 44:43Speaker 2: MVP season this year, comps up, he goes up. But
- 44:47Speaker 2: those guys have you know, kind of like what we
- 44:49Speaker 2: were talking about with aj Browdn, they have equity, They've
- 44:51Speaker 2: done a year over year. You know a guy that
- 44:54Speaker 2: I think that could be knocked out of there in
- 44:56Speaker 2: my opinion is Burrow.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Like I think Burrows the b third ninety seven overall, he's.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Great, but he needs to stay healthy. And even though
- 45:03Speaker 2: he's great, and I know their defense was historically bad
- 45:06Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, but he threw for all
- 45:08Speaker 2: these yards and all these touchdowns and it went very
- 45:10Speaker 2: many games. So at some point Burrow needs to get
- 45:13Speaker 2: back to the Burrow.
- 45:14Speaker 1: That was going to a speaking of Dak Prescott ahead
- 45:16Speaker 1: of Justin Herbert and Caleb Williams.
- 45:18Speaker 2: So Dak is kind of a film watcher truther. Okay,
- 45:22Speaker 2: so the film watchers really like Dak.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Well, that's how they do the Madden ratings.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that those guys, the nerd the film nerds not
- 45:28Speaker 2: got the analytics nerds as much, but the film nerds,
- 45:31Speaker 2: the true junkies. They Dak's tape is really really good
- 45:36Speaker 2: and like his like mastery that.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Like that too.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I would say Herbert's is more like the highlights are
- 45:41Speaker 2: really really good, Like the good throws are like some
- 45:45Speaker 2: of the best. You can stack those up with any
- 45:46Speaker 2: quarterback in the league. I think Dak's consistency is underrated,
- 45:50Speaker 2: Like Dak's a really really good player.
- 45:52Speaker 1: One more while we're here. Yeah, aj Brown not a
- 45:56Speaker 1: top ten receiver. Recording to Matten, how much.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Does Madden's They'll put on speed because my mad.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Actually playing the game, speed is everything. When they put
- 46:07Speaker 1: the overall ratings together, it's not as weighted, like you
- 46:10Speaker 1: can be nasty with a seventy five overall receiver who
- 46:13Speaker 1: has like ninety eight speed. Okay, fair enough, so that's
- 46:15Speaker 1: not other dude. The guys they have ahead of him,
- 46:17Speaker 1: Chase in JSN or ninety nine overalls, then pooka Am
- 46:21Speaker 1: and Ross Saint Brown. They have justin Jefferson fifth. That
- 46:25Speaker 1: feels a little low.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Yeah, another guy that didn't have like the best season
- 46:29Speaker 2: last year?
- 46:29Speaker 1: Who have thrown them the ball? I know, I'm uh
- 46:32Speaker 1: ceedee Lamb, Drake London, DeVonta Smith, Terry McLaurin, Mike.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Evans, Okay, Mike Evans a little hot.
- 46:40Speaker 1: I put a J brownhead of Mike Evans and maybe
- 46:41Speaker 1: even Terry McLaurin. Those are the two that I look
- 46:43Speaker 1: at now. I'm trying to think of who else is
- 46:45Speaker 1: missing there. I mean, probably another.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Mike Evans, a Hall of Famer in my mind, but
- 46:50Speaker 2: that's because of what he did.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta be realist.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not necessarily because of what he's gonna do
- 46:56Speaker 2: this year. Okay, I can live with it. I mean,
- 46:59Speaker 2: I don't know. I think the reason why I brought
- 47:01Speaker 2: up the speed thing is because my Madden is like
- 47:03Speaker 2: Bethel Johnson's like the best player in the game, right, but.
- 47:05Speaker 1: His overall is not hot. Like that doesn't reflect overall
- 47:08Speaker 1: john No, trust me, it's still kind of like that.
- 47:10Speaker 1: They claim this year it's different. We'll see.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Bethel Johnson was like Randy Moss and Madden.
- 47:15Speaker 1: The trick was Madden O four. You make Bethel Johnson
- 47:18Speaker 1: your backup quarterback because then he was the holder on
- 47:21Speaker 1: the field goal, so you could run the fake field
- 47:24Speaker 1: goal where the holder takes it just peels out and
- 47:25Speaker 1: it was an auto touchdown. So you're that was the.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Play you're annoying Madden player Like when I was eight,
- 47:30Speaker 2: I'm not saying, you know, I didn't punch like I'm
- 47:33Speaker 2: not saying, like to play Madden like a real NFL game,
- 47:36Speaker 2: but doing little gimmicky things like that, and Madden.
- 47:38Speaker 1: When I was eight, it was fun. I just wanted
- 47:40Speaker 1: to rush for a thousand yards in the game with Bethel.
- 47:42Speaker 2: You still do that. Let's face it.
- 47:44Speaker 1: I did have Madden four open semi recently. There you go,
- 47:49Speaker 1: needed the nostalgia hit.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Okay, let's get back to tight ends.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yes, so thank you for humoring me.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Eli Reriden. We buying it. We in some hype hype trains.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I am buying that he is going to be a
- 48:03Speaker 1: legit threat as a receiver as it like, relatively speaking,
- 48:06Speaker 1: I think he would be. I think as a receiver
- 48:09Speaker 1: he represents an upgrade over Austin Hooper. I think that
- 48:12Speaker 1: was there on the college tape. I like what I've
- 48:15Speaker 1: seen from him so far in his camp. He does
- 48:17Speaker 1: have to stay healthy, but you don't really. I did
- 48:20Speaker 1: not realize until seeing him in person, Like in plays,
- 48:24Speaker 1: he's massive.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Yeah, he is tall, big, he's.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Got that power forward build. Like Hunter, Henry is not
- 48:30Speaker 1: a small human being by any means for a tight end.
- 48:33Speaker 1: He's about average size, right like Eli Raridan is big
- 48:38Speaker 1: for a.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Tight end, huge hands.
- 48:41Speaker 1: So there's that. Now, the caveat is, let's see the
- 48:46Speaker 1: pads and he as a blocker and I and some
- 48:49Speaker 1: of it's been coming with the twos too to be
- 48:51Speaker 1: fair as well. Yeah, but like is the second tight end,
- 48:54Speaker 1: he's not gonna be drawing top coverage. I'm kind of
- 48:57Speaker 1: okay with that. The bigger issue for me is can
- 48:59Speaker 1: he block? Because what you really want out of that pick,
- 49:03Speaker 1: and what I think they really wanted, maybe with Julian
- 49:04Speaker 1: Hill more so than him, is to be able to
- 49:07Speaker 1: play true twelve personnel not twelve, but we're definitely passing
- 49:12Speaker 1: because this but this kuy can't blocker not twelve, but
- 49:15Speaker 1: the second tight ends and offensive lineman, so you know
- 49:17Speaker 1: we're gonna run the ball. He's not a receiving threat
- 49:19Speaker 1: like true tight end can be accounted for either way. Twelve,
- 49:23Speaker 1: I'm not sure we're there are yet so I, well,
- 49:26Speaker 1: it's going to be the blocking, right And I don't
- 49:28Speaker 1: think Raridan was a negative blocker in college. I think
- 49:30Speaker 1: as far as a college tight end goes, he's okay.
- 49:33Speaker 1: The gap between blocking is a tight end in college
- 49:36Speaker 1: and blocking in the NFL, like at that position specifically,
- 49:40Speaker 1: is much bigger than the gap between the receiver responsibilities
- 49:44Speaker 1: in college in the NFL for a tight end. So like,
- 49:47Speaker 1: that's a much bigger question that he has to answer
- 49:49Speaker 1: if he shows up and he starts blocking his ass
- 49:51Speaker 1: off though, I mean, the hype train's out of control
- 49:54Speaker 1: at that point. That's going to be unbelievable. But I'll
- 49:56Speaker 1: have to see it, I will say, though we had
- 49:59Speaker 1: talked about, or I had talked about. Okay, like, give
- 50:03Speaker 1: it a couple of weeks, see what the young guys
- 50:05Speaker 1: are doing. Then go and sign a veteran if you
- 50:08Speaker 1: need one. Where are you at with that right now?
- 50:11Speaker 1: Because I an Arkan hasn't been I need to see.
- 50:13Speaker 1: I need to see I need you need to see
- 50:15Speaker 1: him block. But like, yeah, because I I don't, I
- 50:18Speaker 1: guess I'm not that you're I guess I'm a little
- 50:21Speaker 1: bit more admittedly, but I'm a little.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Bit more cautious with the Raritan's blocking, okay, because I
- 50:27Speaker 2: think in college he had some really good blocking tape
- 50:30Speaker 2: and he also had some not so good blocking tape.
- 50:32Speaker 1: Well, I'm saying, like you you asked me, right, you
- 50:35Speaker 1: said the hype trains getting.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Going, it is? I mean, it's it's going.
- 50:39Speaker 1: What I'm saying is, let's see the blocking. Like if
- 50:43Speaker 1: the blocking is even average for what he's given as
- 50:46Speaker 1: a receiver. Let's say he's just an average blocker for
- 50:50Speaker 1: a rookie tight end combined with what he's doing with receiving,
- 50:54Speaker 1: where should the hype train be.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Hi, he is average? Because well, I think the biggest
- 50:59Speaker 2: thing to me is right now, as I feel like
- 51:01Speaker 2: they would be a little bit predictable tight end wise,
- 51:04Speaker 2: because I think Arkin's a good blocker but not a
- 51:06Speaker 2: great receiver. And you know, Raardan's a good receiver, but
- 51:09Speaker 2: not a great blocker. And I would also put Hunter
- 51:11Speaker 2: Henry in that Ardin category, a good receiver, not a
- 51:14Speaker 2: good blocker. So if you're coming out of the of
- 51:16Speaker 2: the huddle and you're the opposition and you see Henry
- 51:20Speaker 2: and Raridan on the field, I don't think that that's
- 51:23Speaker 2: gonna happen more than just third downs in like two
- 51:25Speaker 2: minute and things like that.
- 51:27Speaker 1: Is how good does Reardon have to be as a
- 51:29Speaker 1: blocker and can he realistically show you that? Do you
- 51:31Speaker 1: think in this camp? To Okay, maybe this is more
- 51:34Speaker 1: real twelve personnel.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Maybe in the joint practices and like we'll see who
- 51:38Speaker 2: plays against who in the preseason games. But I think
- 51:41Speaker 2: the biggest thing with Rayden is I think he says
- 51:43Speaker 2: it has to be a better blocker than Henry, like,
- 51:46Speaker 2: because I think Henry is kind of not a good
- 51:48Speaker 2: blocker at all either. So if both those guys are
- 51:51Speaker 2: too weak to play in line, like someone's got to
- 51:53Speaker 2: play in line, right, So if both those guys are
- 51:55Speaker 2: really struggling in line, then you know, there goes any
- 51:58Speaker 2: of your outside runs right at least to the tight
- 52:00Speaker 2: end side.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Maybe do you think he can be a better blocker?
- 52:04Speaker 2: Yeah, in time, But I think that he needs this
- 52:06Speaker 2: skinless chicken. I think he needs to be in that
- 52:09Speaker 2: NFL strength and conditioning program. I don't know if this
- 52:12Speaker 2: year is the I don't know if it's going to
- 52:13Speaker 2: happen for him this year. It might be a year
- 52:15Speaker 2: two leap kind of thing that we're talking about next summer, like,
- 52:18Speaker 2: does Eli Rearden look bigger? Does he you know, has
- 52:21Speaker 2: he added weight as he added mass u to his frame.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Whereas with Arkin, I think Arkin can step in pretty
- 52:27Speaker 2: early on and be a pretty serviceable blocker for them
- 52:30Speaker 2: and maybe allow Hunter Henry to flex and move around
- 52:33Speaker 2: a little bit more. But then I think that you're pigeonholing.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Arkin is gonna be like Dwayne Allen, right, like Patriots
- 52:40Speaker 2: Dwayne Allen, where like he's going to be leaked out
- 52:43Speaker 2: into the flats on the back side of the bougression
- 52:45Speaker 2: and he's going to catch like three passes the whole year.
- 52:48Speaker 2: So you're a little bit predictable, like that's going to
- 52:50Speaker 2: be your base offense. You're gonna run the ball, it's
- 52:53Speaker 2: gonna be a lot of play action. I don't think
- 52:55Speaker 2: it's going to be a lot of drop back, whereas
- 52:57Speaker 2: with Reard and on the field, I think it's going
- 52:58Speaker 2: to be a ton of dropback, Like that's gonna be
- 53:00Speaker 2: your passing, your drop back passing game. So we'll see.
- 53:04Speaker 2: But I'm encouraged with Reridan for two reasons. I think
- 53:08Speaker 2: the catches in traffic that he's made or with like
- 53:10Speaker 2: coverage on him have been impressive. So even though this
- 53:14Speaker 2: play strength, I'm a little bit concerned. As a blocker,
- 53:16Speaker 2: he's flashed some good play strength at the catch point,
- 53:18Speaker 2: which I think is gonna you have to do that
- 53:20Speaker 2: at a tight end. You're gonna be in crowds, you're
- 53:22Speaker 2: gonna be into the anti coverage. The other thing in
- 53:25Speaker 2: this happened yesterday. It was just one play and I'm
- 53:27Speaker 2: probably over selling it, but he caught a pass from
- 53:31Speaker 2: the veto over the middle of the field yesterday where
- 53:33Speaker 2: he's running a shoot route. Patriots have a shoot route
- 53:36Speaker 2: that has a conversion and an option at the top.
- 53:39Speaker 2: You can either bend it like a crosser, or you
- 53:41Speaker 2: can keep it up the seam. And he saw that
- 53:43Speaker 2: the linebacker sitting inside of him as his zone dropping
- 53:46Speaker 2: linebackers sitting right in the middle of the field, and
- 53:48Speaker 2: he just sat it down and he just kind of
- 53:51Speaker 2: settled into that void in the zone and sat it
- 53:53Speaker 2: right down. And I thought, you know that that's a
- 53:56Speaker 2: pretty heavy play for a rookie and his fourth training
- 54:00Speaker 2: can't practice like that. To me, shows savvy along with
- 54:03Speaker 2: you know, the athleticism as a receiver. So I'm pretty
- 54:06Speaker 2: bullish on him as a receiver right now. Maybe I'm overreacting,
- 54:09Speaker 2: but I think that he's a guy that can bring it.
- 54:13Speaker 2: I agree, you know Austin Hooper Upbrade in that regard.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Can he block as well as Austin Hooper will see?
- 54:18Speaker 2: But you know that's gonna be the big question. If
- 54:20Speaker 2: they're going to run a lot of twelve, then someone's
- 54:23Speaker 2: gonna have to be at least a serviceable blocker in line,
- 54:26Speaker 2: right So which one of those two is going to
- 54:28Speaker 2: be able to do that? Henry or or Raridan? Last
- 54:31Speaker 2: thing here on the list. I had not a ton
- 54:34Speaker 2: to glean yet, Alex about offensive and defensive line without pads,
- 54:39Speaker 2: but participation I think is important. I had two notes,
- 54:43Speaker 2: you know, just Caleb Lomu's role and his developmental plan
- 54:47Speaker 2: what it seems to be right now. Also, they're starting
- 54:50Speaker 2: five on the offensive line barring injury. I think we
- 54:53Speaker 2: kind of know what it is already. I would be
- 54:55Speaker 2: shocked if it's not Campbell Vera, Tucker Wilson on I
- 55:00Speaker 2: knew Moses yep that. I don't know why it would change.
- 55:03Speaker 2: Lomu is on that Nate Solder plan right now. He's
- 55:05Speaker 2: on the sixth offensive lineman. Uh yeah, top swing tackle
- 55:11Speaker 2: successor at one side, which will probably be right for Lomu.
- 55:15Speaker 2: It was left for Solder, but that seems to be
- 55:17Speaker 2: his role right now, and I don't really see it
- 55:20Speaker 2: changing unless somebody gets hurt, like I I And it's
- 55:22Speaker 2: not anything that Lomu's doing wrong. I just I think
- 55:24Speaker 2: this is the plan, This is what they had in mind.
- 55:26Speaker 1: And I mean, I think people need to recalibrate, like
- 55:28Speaker 1: all the first round picks got to play and like
- 55:30Speaker 1: kind of yes.
- 55:31Speaker 2: But also the twentieth overall, right, we're.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Not talking top five picks anymore. And I think at
- 55:35Speaker 1: that position, especially like tackle, i'd say tackle, edge rusher, quarterback,
- 55:40Speaker 1: maybe corner, are spots where if you have a chance
- 55:44Speaker 1: to get a guy a year ahead, you just get them.
- 55:47Speaker 1: And you'd rather have the guy year ahead in red
- 55:49Speaker 1: shirt him for a year than you know, you don't
- 55:51Speaker 1: know what the tackle market's going to look like next year,
- 55:53Speaker 1: and now it's in need, and now maybe you have
- 55:55Speaker 1: to settle or something like that. If you like, if
- 55:57Speaker 1: you like the guy, you take them.
- 55:58Speaker 2: He's gonna play this year. He's gonna have his opportunities.
- 56:01Speaker 2: It's not he's not gonna start out of the shoot.
- 56:04Speaker 2: Morgan Moses. I don't know if he's gonna play every
- 56:06Speaker 2: snap or every game. He didn't play every snap last year,
- 56:08Speaker 2: but he was pretty close for a guy his age.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Campbell obviously got hurt last year. I think he's still
- 56:15Speaker 2: gonna practice them at guard. We haven't seen that a ton,
- 56:19Speaker 2: but if vera Tucker or one who gets hurt, I
- 56:20Speaker 2: wouldn't be surprised if Lomu gets called upon in that situation.
- 56:23Speaker 2: Either he's gonna They're gonna play six offensive linemen one hundred,
- 56:27Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty snaps this year, probably so that
- 56:30Speaker 2: he's gonna play, he's gonna get his opportunities. Nate Soldier's
- 56:33Speaker 2: rookie year, Sebastian Volmer got hurt at right tackle. He
- 56:35Speaker 2: played a lot of right tackle, ended up starting a
- 56:37Speaker 2: bunch of games at right tackle. So Loma will get
- 56:39Speaker 2: his opportunities. All right, before we hit the break, we
- 56:42Speaker 2: got our three up, three down four days into training camp,
- 56:44Speaker 2: so uh take it with a grain of salt. This
- 56:46Speaker 2: is super early, but we tried to we try to
- 56:49Speaker 2: go a little deeper, right, A little bit more.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Of this is like Kayshawn Booty is not on here.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Christ isn't on here.
- 56:55Speaker 2: So my number one up, I think we might have
- 56:57Speaker 2: had the same I'd put I put them together. The
- 57:00Speaker 2: tight ends reared in in.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Arkin I had, I had reared and he's just especially
- 57:04Speaker 1: after like we really didn't see him at all in
- 57:05Speaker 1: the spring, and you get a little worried, like is
- 57:08Speaker 1: he not showing the coaches something? Is he not doing
- 57:10Speaker 1: well in meetings? Whatever? Yeah, Rabel credited him for playing faster.
- 57:13Speaker 1: It's clearly working. He's had an awesome start to camp.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Number two on my list was my guy Chucky Trees.
- 57:20Speaker 2: I'm in on Charles Woods all right, and Charles Wood's
- 57:22Speaker 2: been competitive. I think it would be good for him
- 57:25Speaker 2: if he can play both inside and outside and be
- 57:27Speaker 2: that true. Fourth corners. Is there such thing as a
- 57:30Speaker 2: swing corner, because that's where we're headed with Charles Woods.
- 57:32Speaker 1: I'd say inside out corner.
- 57:35Speaker 2: He's he's backing up all three spots.
- 57:37Speaker 1: I would I the terms I've used mention, I don't
- 57:39Speaker 1: know if I ever like said he's I have all
- 57:40Speaker 1: these weird terms in my head. An inside out corner,
- 57:43Speaker 1: an outside in corner is a guy who can play both,
- 57:45Speaker 1: and it's just a matter of what's his priority. So
- 57:47Speaker 1: I would call Charles Woods an outside in corner. Mainly
- 57:52Speaker 1: plays on the outside, but can play on the inside
- 57:54Speaker 1: fair enough.
- 57:55Speaker 2: So I have the two rookie tight ends. Yeah, Charles
- 57:58Speaker 2: Woods at number two. Who's your number two?
- 58:00Speaker 1: Land Larrison. We don't really talk about him, but still
- 58:02Speaker 1: squarely looks like RB three was part of the kick
- 58:06Speaker 1: return drill. We got a little glimpse. They didn't do
- 58:08Speaker 1: full team kick return, but they kind of pulled some
- 58:09Speaker 1: guys aside and it looked like they were going through
- 58:12Speaker 1: some kick return technique stuff with them. So you're gonna
- 58:15Speaker 1: have to do that to make the team. And some
- 58:16Speaker 1: of the other running backs are there too. But he's
- 58:19Speaker 1: staying involved and he's even gotten some run with Drake May.
- 58:22Speaker 1: I do know he's been greater or bad again, it's
- 58:24Speaker 1: just tough to judge the run game overall until the
- 58:26Speaker 1: Pats come on. But he remains just in terms of
- 58:29Speaker 1: the depth chart, that third running back.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he's definitely on the depth chart. Is the third
- 58:34Speaker 2: guy right now. He's the leader in the clubhouse for that.
- 58:37Speaker 2: I do think Miles Montgomery and jam Miller have flashed
- 58:39Speaker 2: a little bit with their speed, So at some point
- 58:42Speaker 2: I think that that's gonna come out a little bit more.
- 58:45Speaker 2: I think Larison's probably a little bit further along. Obviously
- 58:49Speaker 2: after being in the building for a year and that
- 58:51Speaker 2: type of stuff, I think those two guys got a
- 58:53Speaker 2: little bit more burst. I'm sure you looked at this
- 58:55Speaker 2: when they drafted him and signed him and undrafted free agency.
- 58:59Speaker 2: Do you realize how close or how similar jam Miller
- 59:03Speaker 2: and Miles Montgomery's body types are.
- 59:05Speaker 1: Yeah, like the same player.
- 59:05Speaker 2: They're literally the same player. They're five ten two oh
- 59:08Speaker 2: five with a four four forty. Both guys height, weight,
- 59:11Speaker 2: speeding almost identically the same. So they clearly see that build,
- 59:17Speaker 2: that skill set as a fit. Trayvon Henderson's also very
- 59:21Speaker 2: similar in that and that fit as well. So obviously
- 59:25Speaker 2: that's a type of back that they look at and say,
- 59:27Speaker 2: these are the types of guys that we want. So
- 59:29Speaker 2: it'll be interesting to see if once we get into
- 59:32Speaker 2: some of the more contact stuff, have those two guys
- 59:35Speaker 2: their speed because I think they have more speed than
- 59:37Speaker 2: Larison does. Yeah, so we'll see if that starts to flash.
- 59:40Speaker 2: The one like non bubble situation I put on here.
- 59:43Speaker 2: I did shart the one on ones yesterday. It was
- 59:46Speaker 2: three steps right the pass rush against three steps, so
- 59:49Speaker 2: it wasn't the full like you're really like bull rushing
- 59:53Speaker 2: or something like that, So give that caveat. But I
- 59:56Speaker 2: thought the offensive line as a whole did really well.
- 59:59Speaker 2: I thought they kind of dominated the period. But more specifically,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: I had Campbell and Lomu five oho to one in
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: their six reps. Campbell went two to zero against Draymont
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Jones and Elijah Ponder two at left, two at right,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: three to zero to one. Pretty good for a rookie
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: in the first time doing one on ones in the NFL.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: We'll get to the flip side of that in a second,
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: But in terms of positives, Campbell had a really really
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: good rep against Brayden Swinson. And we talked about this
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: a lot last year. Towards the end of last year,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: I remember we talked so much about him catching guys
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: instead of like being aggressive and going out and getting guys,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: and he was using a vertical set and he was
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: setting back into the backfield and trying to catch people,
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: and I just didn't think that that was the best
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: approach for him because of his limitations. With his length.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: So in that rep with Swinson, he just came right
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: out of his stance, put two hands in Swinson's chest
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: and just immediately shut down the rep. And I want
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: to see more of that. And that was a little
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: you remember in the offseason, I think he worked a
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: little bit with Tarron Armstead a little too on arm set.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: You're on arms set. Was really good at that and
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: I think that that's hopefully some maturation with Campbell. I've
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: been really impressed with Campbell now there's no pads or
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: yesterday with Shell's he put Millon Williams on his butt yesterday, Uh,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: ear hold him, put him right on the ground. I
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: think Campbell's looked pretty good now. We'll see if it lasts.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: But I think if you're looking for your two lead
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: for him, if you're looking for him, yeah, to be
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: healthy and more like the players a.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Big thing to me. He looks healthy, yeah, and you know,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: not saying he's played poorly, but that was kind of
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: the first box to check. Last one for you, I
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: actually have two more. Okay, cool because he made me
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: think of one. The one I had written down was
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: pop and I kind of talked about this earlier. I
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: just think people were some people putting him off the roster.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Booty's been great, and I think that's kind of overshadowed.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Pop's been really good too, He's been really involved. But
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: the other one, I thought it because we already kind
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: of talked about Pop. You just mentioned, Yeah, he lost
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: a rep to Campbell yesterday. But Braden Swinson, I just
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: loved when he talked to me the other day. I
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: just loved what he had to say talking about new Focus,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: new diet. I didn't realize he said he was up
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: to two hundred and seventy pounds last year. You cannot
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: be a speed rusher two seventy. He said, he's now
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: back down to like two fifty two fifty five, working
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: on a new diet, less uh fruit roll ups, less gushers,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: more plantains.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: So I didn't realize that fried bananas was like a
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: positive for your diet. Isn't that what plantains is?
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: No, plantains are the thing you used to make, but
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: you can just eat them straight up. I don't think
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: he's I would imagine he's not eating them. Fried plantains
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: are just like small bananas is totally different normal.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Oh, because fried plantains got it right.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Totally different fruit, mostly different.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: But most people have fried them.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Right, you can fry them. That is a deep Okay,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: that is one thing you can do with him. They're
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: very good, Okay fried. I don't know if I've ever
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: had a plantain not fed.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: I think I have had a plantain, but only It's
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: a big thing in the Caribbean.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I would imagine that they just taste like bananas.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: They do, They don't, They don't.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: I think they taste like bananas.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: It tastes like at all. It's a much more mild taste. Okay,
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: it's not very sweet. That's why when you fry them,
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: you usually toss them with salt or other savory spices.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: But you can also steep them and they become a
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: little bit sweeter.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: When you I just got plantain, explained. I like that,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: all right, explained.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Yeah, But either way, Braden Swinton's down in two fifty
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: sounds like the coaching staff loves his approach. He knows
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: he I mean, he said, I'm paraphrasing, but like he
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: didn't take it seriously enough last year.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Yeah, in the.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Summer and going on the practice squad, he said he
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: needed that to kind of get the wake up call.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: So see what happens when the Pats come on. You
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: still got to make plays. But I love his approach.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: I think that he is again I just think taking
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: that we know he's talented. It's between the ears thing
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: with him, and it sounds like he's got his head
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: on straight all right.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: So those are our ups three downs. I think we
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: have to both have the same number one down and
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: we'll see if this changes. But as of right now,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Kyle Williams just seems like a guy without at home
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: this offense and definitely repping as either the sixth or
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: seventh wide receiver in the rotation. Some of that's because
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Chishom plays in the slot and it's a different position.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: But that being said, I've written his name down once.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: Paul had to remind me yesterday of the catch that
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: he made in like the first or second day of practice.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: I totally forgot about it. Not a ton of opportunity
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: with Drake May right now. The walkthrough day was the
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: most telling. The walk through day, he was literally standing
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: on the sideline for ninety five percent of practice, not
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: getting any reps. What is the path for Kyle Williams
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: right now? Because right he I don't know if it's
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: a guarantee that he makes this team, Alex, I don't know.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: I think that they probably could figure out something to
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: do with him, Like, if he's not on the team,
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: is he tradable right as a year two guy. Maybe
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: somebody goes back to their college evaluation and still thinks
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: that there's something worth trading for there. I don't know,
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: but I see a lot that he's definitely going to
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: make the team. I don't know that he's definitely going
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: to be here.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: So on one hand, Beatle made this point when I
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: was on with them the other day, and it's not
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: quite apples and apples, but it's not apples and oranges.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: I've said, it's like Granny Smith to Red Delicious, Okay,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Jalen Polk was a second round pick and they moved
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: on from him after a year.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: They weren't the coaching staff when Polk was drafted, so
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: in that sense, it's different.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: And I would also say that I think Kyle Williams
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: has played better there, and I.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Think Kyle Williams is he has already shown to be
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: much better player in jample Yea. But just in terms
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: of the will they move off a guy that they
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: invested that kind of draft pick in. There is a
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: little bit of precedent for it. I think he's going
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: to be here. You know, it's tough because they got
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: seven guys. Yeah, you can make the case why they
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: can't cut any of them, right, there's a really solid
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: case to not cut or trade any of them. I mean,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Brown and Dobbs obviously aren't going anywhere. Kaishan Boody has
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: been so good in camp. His chemistry with May is excellent.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: All of that. Pop Douglass is their best slot receiver
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: and plays a unique role that most of the other
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: guys on the roster don't f to. Chisholm is their
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: only other slot receiver. So if the slot receiver is
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: going to be a factor, you need a backup, and
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: that's Chisholm and maybe he can return kicks. Mac Hollins
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: brings the uniqueness with his size and strength what he
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: does as a blocker. His catch right is he also,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: like Booty I think is very strong chemistry with Drake
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: May and Kyle Williams was a top seventy pick a
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: year ago and is one of your few true speed guys.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: And one of your few guys that are under contract,
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: like right long term.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: So and I think that's everybody. Did I miss anybody?
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Or did I just figure out who they're cutting? But
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: they can't carry seven and maybe somebody gets hurt. Maybe
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you get a godfather offer for Kashawn Booty, somebody buys
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: into this camp he's having. But like that's the problem. Yeah,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: you probably can't cut a guy like Ky Williams. So
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: you can say that about all seven of them, and
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: then you're just back to we got to cut one.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: So you just mentioned Booty. The real path for Kyle
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Williams being a true contributor this year was pushing Booty
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: off the roster, right, him having a great camp, Booty
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: being tradeable, and you trade Booty and you pivot to
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: Kyle Williams, Like.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: That was the path.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Now, it's hard to have a really good camp like
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: that when you don't get the opportunity to have it right.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: And it's not the Kyle Williams and Batty. She hasn't
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: been on the field.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: So the opportunity is not there. Because when you talk
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: about base receivers X or Z guys, you know, not
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: slots like base receivers, it's brown it's Dobbs, it's Booty,
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: it's Hollands, and then it's Williams. So he has four
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: guys ahead of him Chisholm. Really, when you bring it down,
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Chisham only has one guy ahead of him. It's Pop
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Douglas because that's their pure slot guys. Yeah, so he
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: only has one guy ahead of him. So when they're
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: running with ones and Pop is taking all the reps
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: with the ones, well, then when the twos come on
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: the field, then they're going to Chisholm, right like that, Dad,
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: So those are Chishom's reps. When Kyle Williams, when the
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: ones are on the field and Brown and Dobbs and
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Booty are getting all those reps, well, when the twos
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: get on the field, Mac Collins needs his reps. You know,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: that's when that that becomes more of a log jam, right.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: So yeah, I think that that's where the issue is
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: is that there's not these a ton of opportunities for
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Kyle Williams because of all these veteran guys. So I
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: don't know what his path is. I heard I think
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Zoe said this on one of your station shows, that
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: like you gotta start learning special teams so I will
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: say that big too, like return game.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: He he put on muscle like legit must I don't know.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Did you see him yesterday? I did bigger. If he
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: has the frame to hold up returning kicks now, he
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: also has to. He has some issues last year with
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: actually fielding the kicks right, but that might. They don't
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: have a clear kick returner right now, so that might
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: really that would really help him.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: That's where it's gonna have to be because if he's
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: a one phase player only, Yeah, at least Chisholm can
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: return punts and may be kickoffs too. If he's a
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: one phase player, that really makes it even more dicey.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Well, I wonder especially if he's now that he put
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: on that muscle, like, can he be a gunner?
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Yeah? I think that's in place, speed for it.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: Yeah, if he can return kicks and be a gunner,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: that's a that's a solid role.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and be a speed guy you know in your
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: back pocket offensively fine? Next? Uh, next one here? Who's
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: your number two down?
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: My number two down? While I close the text, that was.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I'll go with mine first. It's a Ken kendallvilldor I
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: mentioned it earlier. I just feel like he's gotten burn
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: a couple of times, and every time I feel like
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: he goes up a notch to like the starting receivers,
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: you know, going up against the starters. Keijon Boody's beating
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: him a couple of times. I think that those that
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: competition right now. This is why I have Woods on
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: the ups and Vildor on the downs. I'm giving it,
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: you're giving it to us.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, Namdi obi iSER just haven't seen him.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: It's a fair one.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Haven't seen him. Feels like a position where there's snaps
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: to be one. It's been all Chad movement. kJ Bray.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Do you have any idea I was talking with Brian
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Hines on Patriots beat. I'm curious your thoughts. How are
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: we going to figure out? I mean, we'll figure it
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: out eventually, first preseason game prior to that because they
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: weren't the Guardian Caps, right, you know the stickers on him,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: who's the green dot Brat or Muma when they're both
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: on the field together. Have you noticed anything that might
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: indicate that.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: I believe it's it's been britt Okay. That's my my feeling,
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: just based off of where he's playing to I see
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: him playing the splaying spot and as the true mic.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: You know, so I would say that he's probably the
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: one with the green dot. But it's a good question. Yeah,
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: the the the linebacker depth along with the cornerback depth
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: is still TBD. There's a lot of kind of buzz
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: about Khalil Jacobs, but I haven't really noticed him. No
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: make plays in the spring. I did, he made a
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: He had a couple of pass breakups at the end
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: of the spring in mini camp. I haven't really noticed
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: that much as much as training camp. But you know,
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: the two udfas I keep hearing about Arkadent Khalil Jacobs.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: So maybe Halil Jacobs, obiis Or was a six round pick.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: So it wasn't like obiis Or was a top one
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: hundred guy, is it. It's not crazy at all to
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: say that the UDFA ends up being better than the
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: six round pick. Like that happens all the time. So
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: maybe they ended up finding their probably more like the
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: Marte Mapu snaps than anything special teams mostly and really
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: like a reserve player on defense. Maybe that guy ends
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: up being killed Jacobs instead of Obi's. Maybe they're similar.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Last one for me, this is another one where it's like, well,
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: if these people were good, then those people probably weren't
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: so good. First run of one on ones, I thought
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: the edge dressers really struggled across the board and this
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: is something that we're going to have to highlight all
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: camp long. And are they going to have enough pass
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: rush off the edge? I thought Draymond Jones and Elijah
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Ponder struggled a little bit. I haven't seen it yet.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: I want to see it from Brandon Swinton because I
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: like what he said and I like the skill set
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: that he showed at LSU. I just haven't seen it.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Really flashed too much yet. Ponder got free a couple
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: of times with scheme rushing team you know, stunts and
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: things like that, but true one on one pass rush.
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: I thought the tackles held their own and all kind
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: of one those reps, especially the top guys. Maybe a
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: little bit of burst from Q Hutchins it's a little
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: bit of flash there, but that's his game. He's two
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: thirty two thirty five that he's a speed rusher type
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: of guy that should look good in one on ones.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: I want to see more from that group. Obviously, no Landry,
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: no Acus like that. Those were two important people. Uh,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: you know who is not a big one on ones guy.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: Not that this matters one bit. Milton Williams like not
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: really like an in his bag one on one guy.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: Because I think his games just overpowering.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: Yeah, like he he doesn't win a whole lot one
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: on one.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: That's fine as long as he does it in the games.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: On the positive side, just to uh, because it made
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: me think of it, Vera Tucker looked phenomenal, Like Vera
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Tucker looks.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Hey, do you want to have this conversation. Let me
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: get my last one, then we'll have a conversation. Demetrius
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: crown Over. Yeah, Marcus Bryant's ahead of him, and I
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: think James Hudsons ahead of him, which.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Marcus pretty good. He had one really rough rep
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: in one on ones yesterday where he fell down.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: This is more just in terms of who's playing ahead
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: of whop, Yeah, Marcus Bryant right now. So the top
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: three are obviously Campbell Moses in Low Moon. In terms
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: of your tackles, he's the fourth guy. Marcus Bryant's clearly
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: the fourth guy, and good for him. I thought it
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: would be him and crown Over competing for the fourth spot. Again,
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: it's been James Hudson over Crownover.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Maybe it's because of James Hussand's versatility.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: Maybe and they played a lit lad card. I don't
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: see it with James Hudson, and he's an older guy,
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: and there's upside with crown Over.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: And yeah, Crownover to me looks really he's he's tall
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: and he's long, but he looks really narrow and thin
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: to me.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: For he's got to put some weight on you.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: He was a guy that converted from tight end to
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: yea psychology looks like it. But yeah, I thought the
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: edge dressers, you know, not that it's a surprising because
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: we know that that group isn't star studded. It's not
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: like these guys are are facing Michael Parsons and Miles
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: Garrett and these one on ones. But it's one of
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: those things where we're gonna have to do this all
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: summer of like does will Campbell really look better? Or
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: are these edge rushers a problem? Right? And that's training camp,
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: all right, So we're gonna take a quick break when
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: we come back. I see you guys on the calls.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: I'm sorry we kept you waiting for so long, but
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: We're coming right to you guys after the break.

- 1:17:05Speaker 2: Seafoods is the new sponsor, and I'm a I'm.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: A big leagal to get some gift cards, big legals guy.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: The one in Chestnut Hill, I think it's still there.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: I don't live in that era anymore so.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: The one closest to me is the Sashore Plaza, So.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, the one in the seaports pretty close. But the
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: one in chesta Ut Hill. I used to go there
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: all the time with my parents and my grandparents, like
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: Sunday six o'clock dinner, you know, type of thing we
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: used to go to.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: Legal test Kitchen still a thing. I don't think it is.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Do you remember that illegal seabar is definitely still a thing?
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Did you ever go to Legal test Kitchen? Yeah? That
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: I used to like going there. I don't think one
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: thing anymore.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: I think the one in the Assembly and in Summerville
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: is technically a test.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: Kitchen called that so uh yeah, the one, the one
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: in the seaport clothes, That's what I used.
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: To go to.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: Okay, legals great love it. Legal Seafoods is giving fans

- 1:18:13Speaker 1: Mainly fish and chips, but it depends on the mood.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I like good tuna steak, do that?
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Okay? That's a good one. I didn't think you were
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: gonna dude, like.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: A good like rare tuna steak with some like soy
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: sauce or something on it.
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: You said, good up like lobster.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Shrimp skin, lobster roll. I'll do if I'm there for
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: like for lunch, maybe a lobster roll. They got some
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: good pastas too, Like with the fish. It depends. That's
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: honestly a place where I don't have like a order.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: It really depends on what I'm feeling.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: If I'm going seafood, I'm either going seafood pasta some
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: sort of pasta dish scampy something like that, or I'm
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: going fish and chips. Those are my two.
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: I feel like I probably get fish and chips the most.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm there because it's good. All right, let's get
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: to the calls. I've been talking too much. Patty's and aguan,
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: what's up, Patty?
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: What's up?
- 1:18:59Speaker 11: Guys?
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: How we doing?
- 1:19:01Speaker 11: I make a good I make a shrimp scampy as
- 1:19:05Speaker 11: as your kids would say, slaps. So I have three things,
- 1:19:09Speaker 11: so I'll try and make him as quick as possible.
- 1:19:12Speaker 11: Three things I would just want to get your guys
- 1:19:14Speaker 11: thoughts on first thing, I'm surprised nobody's talked about this
- 1:19:18Speaker 11: over the first four days of camp. But I think
- 1:19:21Speaker 11: these next three days, when they put pads on, I
- 1:19:24Speaker 11: think we're going to see a different aj Brown. And
- 1:19:26Speaker 11: I think we're going to see a more physical I
- 1:19:28Speaker 11: think I just think the physicality. As the physicality ramps up,
- 1:19:32Speaker 11: I think he's going to be a little bit more
- 1:19:34Speaker 11: on I want to get your guys thoughts on that
- 1:19:37Speaker 11: second thing, Eli Raridan, Can you guys can ask Claire
- 1:19:43Speaker 11: this like he was on my list, like he was
- 1:19:45Speaker 11: one of the tight ends that I absolutely loved coming
- 1:19:47Speaker 11: out this past draft year. And another another thing, I
- 1:19:51Speaker 11: think when the pads come on, I think if he's
- 1:19:55Speaker 11: you guys kind of touched on it a little bit
- 1:19:56Speaker 11: like I think Hunter Henry's. I don't think he's good
- 1:19:59Speaker 11: or bad. I would call him a willing and capable blocker.
- 1:20:03Speaker 11: If he's if he shows out like at the by
- 1:20:06Speaker 11: the end of camp, that he's a little bit better
- 1:20:10Speaker 11: than that. Can we put this, you know, getting another
- 1:20:13Speaker 11: tight end, getting a veteran tight end to.
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: Bed and.
- 1:20:18Speaker 11: The last guy, Romeo Dobbs. I know he's been kind
- 1:20:22Speaker 11: of polarizing as far as like him not really showing
- 1:20:25Speaker 11: up so far, even though it's only four days. But
- 1:20:27Speaker 11: do you guys have any worry that kind of like
- 1:20:30Speaker 11: what we saw with John Hu in twenty twenty one
- 1:20:33Speaker 11: and twenty twenty two, where he just really doesn't grasp
- 1:20:36Speaker 11: the offense. And the one thing I hope we don't
- 1:20:39Speaker 11: see this year is remember how kind of sloppy he
- 1:20:43Speaker 11: made things look? John who I'm talking about. I kind
- 1:20:46Speaker 11: of hope we don't see that with him, and I
- 1:20:48Speaker 11: just hope something clicks. Do you guys have any worry
- 1:20:51Speaker 11: about that? I'll take it off the air. Don't ever
- 1:20:54Speaker 11: apologize for keeping me on hold. I can listen to
- 1:20:56Speaker 11: you guys talk football forever.
- 1:20:57Speaker 5: That's not God.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Thank you to call it. Thatt a eyepriciated the name
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: that that if you want to do this, and I
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: fully admit that this is way too early to put
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: this on him. Uh didn't the Patriot free agent signing
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: of the past that comes to mind for me with
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: Romeo Dobbs. Worst case scenario is not John Whit's Juju
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: so also a ja name. Yeah, very different situations like
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Juju was declining health wise and things like that. I
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: don't I don't think we're there With Romeo Dobbs his
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: point about AJ Brown in the pass we made yesterday
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: on the show on PU I think it's a great point.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: I meant to mention it when we were talking about it,
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: and I totally forgot to. AJ Brown is a is
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: a physical specimen, like he is a physical power player.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: I don't you know. We got a call yesterday ask
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: me if I I was like already kind of like
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: ooing an eyeing over Diggs at this point. But Diggs
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: was a great route runner, right like he was a
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: great separator and a great route runner. AJ Brown's got
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: a different skill set in a different type of game
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: until the art really ramping up the physicality where he
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: can use that. This is not he's not going to
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: be like a pajama party guy, right, He's not. He's
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: he's a Sundays guy like he's he's a football player.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: He's not a two hand touch right receiver. So I
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: think that's that's a more than fair point. What did
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: you think about the three things he said?
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you with Dobbs, I think that that's
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: the better comp would be Juju. But there is some
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: health stuff there I'm trying to remember what else he said. Yeah,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: I agree with AJ Brown and the pads that that
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: is probably some of it too, Like he just wants
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: to body guys and that's going to be his game.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: And I also think that's again I don't think it's
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: just them not being in pads. I do think that
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: him and Drake are still working to get on the
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: same page to some of that stuff. You have to
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: work with the contact being a part of it. So
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: I think getting into pads the first few days of pads,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: it's going to be really important to see how his
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: chemistry with Drake make grows during that time.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: Yeah, just you know, beating guys up at the line
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: of scrimmage, you know, bumping guys off the top of
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: the route, like you're not going to do that in
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: shorts and a T shirt the same way that you're
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: going to do that in pads. And then obviously with
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: AJ Brown that I probably existed even less with Diggs.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: The whole after the catch element is not something that
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: we're going to see as much in practice right when
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: they're not tackling to the ground. So big part of
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: his game is how hard he is to tackle well
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: you're not tackling. So he might catch a six yard
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: curl and turn that into a twenty six yard game,
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: but you're not going to see that in a non
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: tackling setting, right, So we might not see that untill
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: Week one in Seattle.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: You know, I doubt we're going to see a j.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Brown much of it all in the preseason, which is fine.
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, tight end or are you? Are you ready
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: to put the the veteran tight end thing to bed
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: or I'm too not there yet.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: We haven't even seen the kids block.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: I mean maybe it's trending in that direction, but the
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: blocking is a huge part of it.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: Yep. Randy's in Providence. What's up, Randy? Randy going, what
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: all right? Call us back? Randy had on hold forever.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: Dominie's in New York. What's up, Dominique? Another one I
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: had on hold for too long? Dominique going once all right,
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: Randy and Dominique give us a call back. We're doing calls, Todd?
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: What's up somewhere? Where are you?
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: Todd?
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: We're kind of stuck between different places, so just immigration
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: stuff since we're all over the place.
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: Okay, Well, I hope that that so you go. I
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: hope everything is all right, Todd.
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: We're almost Intoxberry, but we don't know where we're going
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: to be right now, so it's one of those things. Anyway,
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: what I've got a little bit of concern about is
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: our depth a linebacker, and concerning Dobbs, is A's gonna
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: be like Brown, like we need to wait till he
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: gets pas on really to evaluate him. Those are my
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: two points, and I just want to hear your thoughts
- 1:24:49Speaker 5: on that. Thanks guys.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks, Todd. I agree, And that's what I said
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: with Brown. My concern level with Dobbs is just a
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: little bit higher because he's not a J. Brown, right, Yeah,
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: you know that's all it is, is just the equity
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: of AJ Brown.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: J Brown showing what he can do when the lights come, right,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: Not that Dobbs have been bad, but he never at
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: a thousand yards season, right.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: Okay, we got a bunch of emails to Alex and
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: I think our callers might be calling back in. But
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: while we get them on the phone, I'll start with
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: this email. I've gotten inundated with questions about this. I'm
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: gonna answer this. We can answer this all at once.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Matt Collins moving to tight end. Is this a thing
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: that could actually happen not happen. I've said it on Twitter,
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: i said it on the show yesterday. To me, this
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: is semantics. I don't think it really matters whether or
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: not he's listed as a tight end or a wide receiver. Yeah,
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: he's going to block the same people. He's gonna run
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: the same routes. He's gonna be in the same areas
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: of the field if he blocks a slot corner or
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: if he cracks the end on a toss, but he
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: has WR next to his name instead of TE or
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: TE instead of WR. It really does not matter.
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: It doesn't matter. I think where some people come with
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: this take though, is like, well, then you don't need
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: to add another tight end. And hey, now maccollins counts
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: as a tight end, not a wide receiver, so they
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: can keep whoever the wide receiver people are arguing for,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Kyle Williamson, Chishom, Kashan Booty, whoever mac Hollins cannot. Mac
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Hollins is not a full time tight end in that sense. Yeah,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: Like there's a couple things one six, four, two twenty
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: one enormous for a receiver. Obviously, it's kind of undersize
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: for a tight end, especially a guy that you're counting
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: on a block, and in that vein, I think people miss, oh, well,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: he's a big tight he's a big wide receiver who's
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: a really good blocker for a wide receiver. Well, isn't
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: a big, good blocking wide receiver really just a tight
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: end In some sense, yes, but in a lot of
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: ways no. Mac hollins is really good at blocking. The
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: kind of assignments you ask a wide receiver to block,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: there's a big difference between we're gonna line you up
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: in the slot and you're gonna block this safety versus
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: you're gonna put your hand in the dirt right next
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: to the tackle and block a defensive end. Those are
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: two very different things. Mac collins is a very good
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: blocker for what he's asked to do, but it's not
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: the full list of what you're gonna ask a tight
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: end to do blocking. So I think the reason a
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: lot of people want to make mc collins a tight
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: end to make the numbers work at the wide receiver position.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: Keep on now it's not seven, Now it's six six,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: and you can find a way to keep six right. Well,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: now you're really short changing yourself. Right, if it's well, Okay, Tanner,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: we're gonna move on from Tanner Arkan because Mac Hollins
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: is such a good blocker, and mac Hollins is going
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: to be our blocking tight end. You're really short changing
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: yourself tight end. Now, that's nothing against mac Collins, it's
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: just a different position.
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: He's a mac Collins already in a lot of ways.
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: Is basically like a move or a joker tight end, right,
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: And I like you said, he's six four, two d
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: and twenty pounds. Yeah, he's not going to put his
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: hand in the dirt and block a defensive end or
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: or a two hundred and fifty five two hundred and
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: sixty pound outside linebacker. That's not a matchup at the
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: Patriots won or that mc collins wants to smoke with, right,
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: So that's not going to happen. Is he going to
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: be like a de facto blur the lines. I think
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: he already does that. I think that's what he does
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: at wide receiver. You know last year the Patriots autis
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: were like really three receiver heavy, but a lot of
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: their eleven or three receiver packages had mac Collins in them,
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: and it kind of blurred the lines between twelve and
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: eleven because they had a guy like Mac Collins who
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: could do some tight end stuff. So at the end
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: of the day, I don't want to argue about it
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: because it's it's semantics, like it's literally like just what
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: position is listed next to his name? You know, the
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: emailer mentioned, I know we're all chasing this player for
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: the rest of the time because he was on the
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: football field, he was tremendous. Aaron Hernandez. He is nowhere
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: near as loose or fluid or quick as Aaron Hernandez was, right,
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: and I and I think that I whenever that name
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: comes up, and he comes up often because we all
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: want another Gronk or another Hernandez, and I get it,
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: so do we. But when her Nandez comes up, I
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: implore you to go watch how quick that dude was
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: for two hundred and fifty pounds, right. That is a rare,
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: rare combination of quickness and size that Hernandez had that
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: nobody else, I don't know if anybody else, like maybe Kelsey,
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: like Travis Kelcey that comes to mind as a guy
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: that touches that like prime Kelsey obviously, but to have
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: that level of eve and d and quickness that that
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: size is rare.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'll just say it again, like mac Hollins
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: can do some tight end stuff and that's great and
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: that's helpful. Keeping mac Hollins is one of your three
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: tight ends, I think is short changing yourself at the
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: tight end position.
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: It's yeah.
- 1:29:33Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: One emiler emailed it and said that you need to
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: swear more with Zo Lacti. Yeah, I to swetch up.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: So on the like post practice streams we do. Zoe
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: likes to swear, and then I'm supposed to swear to
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: but he he usually does more than me. His numbers
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: are usually higher than mine, so I guess I gotta
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: keep up with him.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: I get yelled at for swearing on here, so yeah.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: I can't swear. Actually, well that's kind of the.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: Bit because it's like a stream on YouTube, right, he's
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: allowed to swear. Yeah, obviously, I know you guys are
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: like relegated regulated all.
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: Right, no, when we're just on YouTube weekend, So I
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: will I will try to be better about that, okay.
- 1:30:09Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: Here is an email from Rick. We haven't really mentioned
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: this guy's name a ton, so he emailed in about
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: gay Bacchus. Can you recall a situation similar to Gay
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Baccus where a player gets drafted and afterwards as disclosed
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: that he had an injury. No, I can recall a
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: million guys, Malcolm Mitchell, Sony, Michelle, Dominique Easley, go on
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: right down the line as I Dowling, Yeah, that had
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: injuries going into the draft. Now, I don't want to
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: be too critical because I don't know the exact answer.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: And I know Greg Bdard had some reporting on this
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: that no team was aware of this knee injury that.
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: I came, Well, it sounds like is it a knee?
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Obviously there's an injury, but it sounds more like the
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: issue is a surgery. So I I yeah, And I
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: guess Bedard said that nobody was aware of it, but
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: injury or the surgery of either of because the need
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: to have a surgery. What could have happened is a
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: specula right, yeah, Because I think there's two different conversations here.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: If he had a knee thing that the team saw
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: in the medicals and they were like, all right, well
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: that's there, but we're not super worried about it because
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: that happens all the time, right, you play even through
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: four years of college football, maybe guys not one hundred
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: percent healthy. But you look, he said, okay, this is
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: the thing with his knee whatever, it's not a big deal.
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: But then he got surgery to repair it and the
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: teams thought it was fine. So now it's not necessarily
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: a knee injury. Don't you get what I'm saying? Like
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: that's different than just like, oh, hey, like he has
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: a ligament issue.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: So the question that I would ask, and I usually
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: and I don't know when it will happen. If it
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: does happen, we usually do get a chance to talk
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: to Elliott Wolf in the summer, so hopefully that does happen.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: Right in theory, you have the combine medical check.
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: Now, the Patriots did not have him in for a
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: thirty visits.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: I think they did.
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: They did, so it was a low moved they had
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: to cancel, right.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so they didn't have they anything was like the
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: second week of April, so they had.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: Akis in for a Medica thirty visit. My understanding of
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: those thirty visits is that you do with your own
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: medical check during those thirty visits.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: That's a reason you do those where the own, the team.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: Doctors get your hands on the player.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: Right, So the combine medical check is the league does
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: it and the information is sent out to the teams.
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: It's one they're not making these guys take thirty two physicals.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: Yes, so we can based off the reporting, you can
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: sit here and say, well, nobody caught it, and that's
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: that's valid. But you also didn't catch it, and that
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: would be my one criticism of this is like, this
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: is why you do these medical checks, like this is
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: why you host players that might have injury flags on
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: your board for thirty visits is to have these checks medically.
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: So when they say nobody was aware of it, so
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: he went on X amount of thirty visits, he probably
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: went on ten, twelve, fifteen, whatever, you know. Usually it's
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: probably around the ten to twelve range. They try not
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: to overload them too much. You went on all these
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: thirty visits and all ten team doctors missed it too.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Unless, again, is there a chance that because we don't
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: know when he had that surgery right, or the proceed.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Sounds like procedure was between the pro day that he
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: had and the start of like the off season program.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: So could he have had it after the physical, but
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: before the draft. So my guess because then you didn't
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: miss it. Do you get what I'm saying.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: So that's the question that I think needs to be answered.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: And that would maybe explain why there were so many issues.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: Is you're like, that might would maybe explain why there's
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: issues with the contract as you went out and did
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: something that we weren't counting on, so we want to
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: address the contract accordingly.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: Or we're not communicated to us that you were doing.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: This right, which then it gets into a weird thing
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: of like, well he wasn't a patriot if it was
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: before the draft, then is it like he wasn't a
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Patriot yet? Yes, So that's that defends it, like you
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: shouldn't get you shouldn't get a surgery in between, right,
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: the medical check and the draft.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: But so that's where the Mike Grease report about an
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: injury waiver, which on a rookie contract is extremely rare.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: Usually those happen with guys later on in their careers
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: when there's a known injury or non lingering issue. The
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: injury waiver on his rookie contract I think comes into
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: play because of that he had a procedure in between
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: his last thirty visits, slash his personal pro day and
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: the draft that teams were not aware of, right, and
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: that's how we got here. But so that would be
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: what a wild situation?
- 1:34:50Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: That so that would be where the team didn't miss it,
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: but there was medical information that they weren't aware of. Correct, Right, All.
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: Right, Randy is back. What's up? Randy?
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: Hey? How's it going? Guys? Worked better this time? It
- 1:35:04Speaker 4: completely dropped last time. My apologies. So I just a
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: couple of quick questions, flash thoughts, and then I'll pop
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: off and get you guys's thoughts. Uh, Cayden Wallace is
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: the name. I haven't heard it all. Is he even
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: still on the team? Is he going to make the roster?
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: You guys have any thoughts whatsoever about him? Pop Jugglas?
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: Like I hear his name a lot, but I feel
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: like he's a pads off guy, you know, like he's little,
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: he's quick, he's those types of guys like often are
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: are great with the pads off, but then you know,
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: you put on the pads and it's just not quite
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: as quick. So it's like, you know, they look good
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: at this time of year a lot. Did you guys
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: have any thoughts about Vita Vea, like great guy to
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: put next to Milton Williams. He used to have to
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: run Williams. Chase is the QB?
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: Could bar More in a pick get that done?
- 1:35:54Speaker 5: Maybe?
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: I don't know. And then like slightly longer thought on
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: the Booty Dowbs Brown thing, because you kind of got
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: the logjam there. You guys have outlined it very well
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: throughout the episode, right, And I feel like if you
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: took those three guys and you rated one through ten skill,
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: team connections and chemistry with the quarterback, Dobbs would be
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: a distant third. And I honestly think if you included
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: Hollis in that, Doves might be fourth. So like you
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: guys would kind of say, like Brown and Doves aren't
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: going anywhere? Why couldn't Dobbs? Is there something I don't
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: I'm not a CBA like scholar or something is there?
- 1:36:31Speaker 6: Like?
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: Could they can they not trade him? Because the most
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: wide receiver needy team in the league right now, granted's
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: in our division, but the Dolphins, whose quarterback played with
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: Dobbs last year, there are other connections in the front office.
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: Why wouldn't he be a guy that they think, like, listen,
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: we signed him, we didn't know for sure we were
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: going to get aj we did, and Dobbs moves to second,
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: but hey, Booty looks great, So now he kind of
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: becomes expendable. I mean, it's quick, and you don't want
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: to make crack. This is signing guys and then trading
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: him right away. But you don't often have situations like
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: this either, So you know, why do you think he's
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: safe in your mind? Why couldn't he be the guy
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: that's expendable in the whole equation? And it kind of
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: opened things up a little bit.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call.
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: You known as July twenty ninth, were already getting questions
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: about trading Romeo.
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of the impact there. I think he
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: answered his own question. Yeah, you don't want to get
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: into a number of reasons. You don't want to get
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: into a habit of signing guys to big free agent
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: contracts and then trading them.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: If you trade Romeo, Dobbs six would less than six
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: months after signing him to a they signed him in March.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Was the total value contract seventy million dollar contract. Yeah,
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: good luck signing any for agent for the next three years.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you you are a terrible press, completely.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Poisoning the brand you are also taking on. Not only
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: is there dead money on his contract, the dead money
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: actually exceeds the cap hit, So you lose twenty six
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: million dollars in cap space this year, which I don't
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: think they have, and then another eight million dollars the
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: year after that, So financially it's a major blow.
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I can't.
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: You can't. There's an just because he's a good player.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: Like, let's give him some time, guys. Yeah, let's give
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: him some time to figure it out and get up
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: the speed. The biggest thing to me, I mean, like
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: the money obviously is a huge factor at any move
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: and any decision in the NFL or Pro sports, but
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: the precedent that that sets, that you're willing to sign
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: a guy and then immediately trade him is just a
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: no go from the jump. Like you said, good luck
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: attracting free agents moving forward.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: If you're gonna do that, sign your own guys.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: If we're having this conversation a year from now with
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: Romeo Dobbs, sure maybe that's a different situation and we
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: can get into that quick. Vita vea take.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: I mean, look, I love him here. They need a
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: nose tackle, they need a guy who can stop the run.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: He can obviously do more than that. He'd be a
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: good veteran leader. The reporting is he wants to go
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: to the West Coast.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: I also don't know, you know with Gonzales in May,
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: like are the Patriots bringing on another big contract because
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: he wants an extension. So this isn't just like a
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: one year move. You bring them in, you're gonna have
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: to pay pay them a thirty one year old. Yeah,
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: thirty one year old. So I mean, like, if we're
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: building a team in Madden for one year, certainly I
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: love it. Logistically, I don't know that it makes a
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: ton of sense if you're going to give up and
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: you're gonna have to give something significant to get them,
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: at that point, i'd go call teams about edge rusher.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: If you're gonna give up, can you get like and
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: I don't know, I know this has kind of gone quiet.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: So he mentioned Barmore? Right, would you rather trade Barmore
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: at this point for Vidavey or Josh.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: Sweat Vidavea, Okay, it's a better player.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: I guess who would the edge rusher equivalent of that.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: Vitave is really good.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: Vitave is really good.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: It's like a top five defensive tackle in football. But
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: he's thirty one. He wants a new contract. I tweeted
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: this out before the show. I did a little well, actually,
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: you know, Evan's plaining. I'm sorry. I try to not
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: to that. I couldn't help myself.
- 1:40:01Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: The Patriots last year, they do have a three four,
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: you know, five man front in their in their wheelbox,
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: in their toolbox, I should say, got caught in between
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: two things there in their toolbox. But that really is
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: a chiris tanga thirty three percent of the snaps kind
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: of thing. Like in theory. I guess they could be
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: a five man front if they get a guy like
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: Vidave and you put him in the middle of Milton
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: Williams and Christian Barmore. But that's a part time role
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: in their current scheme. It's a twenty five percent if
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: you want to go off of five man fronts. It's
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: thirty three percent if you want to go off of
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: Tonga last year. But remember Milton Williams got hurt and
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: Tonga played a lot of the Milton Williams things, So
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: like there's a little bit of gray area there. Let's
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: call it twenty five to thirty percent of the snaps
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: they would play, they would have a role for a
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: true three four nose tackle. So without that role, like
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: you have three guys, so someone's gonna be on the
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: sideline as well. So he mentions trading bar more So,
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: I guess if you Barre is in the trade. But
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't love that.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: I just I don't know if the Bucks want Barmore.
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: They have Elijah Kantsi, who is kind of a similar player.
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: You're trying to plug a different role, Like, yeah, you know,
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: does their defensive scheme facilitate having two of those guys
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: on the field a lot at the same.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: Time, right, Like if you're in if you're a big mask,
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: I don't know, if you're a big four man front
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: team like the Patriots are, they're about in a four
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: man front about sixty five percent of the time. If
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: you're a big four man front team, then it just
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: it's just Matt, you only have two defensive tackles on
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: the field, right, So someone if you have a three
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: man rotation of Vea Barmore, Williams don't get me wrong.
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: That's one of the best interior rotations in football, maybe
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: be best. But someone's on the sideline, someone's not playing
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: a lot, and I guess.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: That's just the argument would be like, well, you keep
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: everybody fresh. But it's one of those things like the
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: bell checkism, right, it's about collecting talent, or it's not
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: about collecting talent, it's about building a team. Yeah, adding
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: Vida is more just collecting talent. I don't know how
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: much he totally found. I'm sure they'd find things from
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: to do, but for what you're gonna have to give up,
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: I think those resources could be better elsewhere.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: The reason why the last thing on the Veya thing,
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: the reason why Corey Durden is the Tonga in house replacement,
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: is because they're not thinking that Corey Durden's going to
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: play sixty five seventy percent of the snaps. They're thinking
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: that Corey Durden is going to play thirty five percent
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: of the snaps. You're not trading for vite Vea, signing
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: him to the extension that he wants to be extended
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: where it's gonna be twenty plus million dollars maybe more
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: a year, and then playing him thirty five percent of
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: the snaps like that, that's not gonna happen. And you're
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: also not going to play Millan Williams the most of
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: any player on the team and take him off the field,
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: or Christian Barmore who's also up there. It's just a
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: lot of resources allocated at one spot without a role
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: to like sort of bring it on now. He's a
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: great player. And if the rumors are that he wants
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: to go to the West coast.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: Like have him go out west, like all you know
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: where he's gonna go the Rams. He's gonna go to
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: the Rams, who are also I'm in on this and
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: there's no inside information here, but they're getting Aaron Donald back, Like,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: come on, he's been at the right, he's been at
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: the facility McAfee talking about he's.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: Like Garrett Donald veya I don't remember exactly, Byron Young
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: Young still there because they have Fist, they have Kobe Turner.
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: Those are inside.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: Here's their front. Here's their front, Yeah, Fisk, Kobe Turner,
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: Byron Young, Yeah, obviously, Miles Garrett. They also have Poona
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: Ford who's a good player.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Good run stuffer. Yeah, Tim Keenan another run stuffer.
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: Vita Vea and Aaron Donald to that, I mean just
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: to three down, it'll.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: Be Garrett, it would be Garrett Donald, Veya Young.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: Oh my god, what do you do? Well?
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: We don't have to worry about to the Super Bowl. Als.
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: We should probably start trying to figure that out now,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: though I don't think that's if you could figure out,
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: in all honesty, In all honesty.
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: Put one of the advanced scouts side.
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: I just want to put your football mind to the
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: test here. Forget the yeah, we'll put We'll put Vitava
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: in it. Just Vita Vea, Miles Garrett and uh and
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: Donald and Donald?
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: Run? Who do you like?
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: How would you scheme that up?
- 1:44:20Speaker 11: Run?
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: Drake run?
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: You just got just constant rollouts.
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: Just move the pocket man, just moving away from Miles
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: Garrett and away from that side of it.
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: You're just going to roll towards Byron Young in fist consistently.
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: Get Vera moving side to side.
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: Do you almost just run like a ton of Reid option.
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: I'm just getting Vitavera and Byron Young and at the
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: point of attack, and I am doing nothing with Donald
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: and Miles Garrett.
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: But what if they put Donald and Garrett on separate sides,
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: because that's what I would do.
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: I'm not putting, I'm running it. I don't know now
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: I'm in trouble.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: That's what I would I would have Garrett Yeah, Fisk,
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: yeah old. The reason why without Via, Garrett Fisk, Donald
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: Young is how I would line it up.
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: So where's Veya playing?
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: I'm saying, even without Via, But then I guess, Garrett,
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: what would that be Garrett thea Donald Young?
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: Yeah? I was thinking more yeah, yeah, that could work
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: because you want you want Miles Garrett on on the backside.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: Right, and then maybe on third downs I put Garrett
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: and Donald next to each other and just completely unlea shell.
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: Well, I don't want to worry about that right now,
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: worry about that And.
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: I left tackles in that division. Trent Williams with Darian Loewis,
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: Harris Campbell's not bad, all right? I I I the
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: last thing on this. I do the via Vea stuff aside.
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: I do want Aaron Donald to come back. I want
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: to see Aaron Donald and Miles Garrett together. How can
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: you not as a fan of the sport, because they
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: just want to see what There's.
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: Still a piece of me that wants the Patriots to
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: win the super Bowl.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: Obviously and have terrified, No, nobody's gonna win any games
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: if that's the case.
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: But for every all thirty one other teams are going
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: oh and seventeen in the Rams, just get a.
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: Who's their DC again? Chris Sula? Yes, match if they
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: still had Wade Phillips. Well, Christil is a pretty good
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: You don't want to see, do you think at that point,
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: without much talent, Sean McVay maybe pops his head in
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: the defense meetings and says, Chris is.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: Like he's going to be a head coach. Some is, yeah,
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: he's good.
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: But with that much talent, Sean McVay being the football
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: BRAINIACI is, you think he starts popping the defensive meetings
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: a little bit and being like, I kind of want
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: to toy around with this. I want to get in
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: the lab on this.
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: Maybe, but I think he would be smarter to just
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: let Chris Shula do his thing.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: I just want to I'm curious. I want to see it.
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: I want to see what it looks like.
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: I'm good. All right, Dominique's in New York. What's up, Dominique?
- 1:46:40Speaker 12: Hey, what's up?
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: Doing good?
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: Hey, good listen.
- 1:46:44Speaker 12: I'm with them on this one. I do not want
- 1:46:46Speaker 12: to see Males Garrett and Aaron Doll get back together
- 1:46:48Speaker 12: that or just together in general. That's Hardably, what two
- 1:46:51Speaker 12: of the top ten defensive players of all time is
- 1:46:54Speaker 12: is You're just running the league at that point defensively,
- 1:46:56Speaker 12: and it.
- 1:46:56Speaker 5: Is what it is.
- 1:46:57Speaker 4: So but if he does come back, we'll be watching.
- 1:47:00Speaker 12: That's part time.
- 1:47:02Speaker 5: So really quick.
- 1:47:03Speaker 12: I had a thought, and this kind of goes back
- 1:47:05Speaker 12: to the point where we're touching you guys were touching
- 1:47:07Speaker 12: on with the linebackers, and I'm a little concerned with
- 1:47:09Speaker 12: the depth, right. I think we had a great draft.
- 1:47:11Speaker 12: You can't address everything in one draft, right, So I'm
- 1:47:14Speaker 12: glad we short up the line when they're heading down
- 1:47:16Speaker 12: to the edge rusher. But I was really hoping that
- 1:47:17Speaker 12: we could have gotten more of a you know, a
- 1:47:20Speaker 12: Mike you know linebacker middle linebackers, whether it would have
- 1:47:23Speaker 12: been like Anthony Junior, I believe, the Jacob Arbrigaz what
- 1:47:25Speaker 12: have you. But I am kind of concerned with our depth,
- 1:47:28Speaker 12: especially knowing that if Robert Spilang goes down, that doesn't
- 1:47:32Speaker 12: really impact the defense. So I'm wondering what are some
- 1:47:34Speaker 12: of the skill sets that you feel you'll be looking
- 1:47:36Speaker 12: for with the linebackers in this training camp. Are there
- 1:47:39Speaker 12: different schemes that we can kind of cover that depth?
- 1:47:41Speaker 12: I know we may not have a third safety, but
- 1:47:44Speaker 12: are there ways you get a lot of athleticism on
- 1:47:46Speaker 12: the field or are there different looks or different guys
- 1:47:48Speaker 12: that can float around just to kind of protect that actually,
- 1:47:51Speaker 12: can you know, play the run, play the pass, et cetera,
- 1:47:53Speaker 12: et cetera, And yeah, maybe who would the guys that
- 1:47:57Speaker 12: you're hoping that pop based on that and can in
- 1:48:00Speaker 12: trivia hopefully meaningfully this season and then last the two
- 1:48:03Speaker 12: never met at the wide receiver situation. We used to
- 1:48:06Speaker 12: have Jujus Smith, Chile, Davon Baker and folks, I'm glad
- 1:48:10Speaker 12: we have more talent than us, right, So that means
- 1:48:12Speaker 12: keeping Romeo, Kay, Sean aj and whoever the means rossing
- 1:48:16Speaker 12: potentially seven find But it's a great position to be
- 1:48:19Speaker 12: in and I'll take it any day of you know,
- 1:48:21Speaker 12: any day of the league compared to like a couple
- 1:48:23Speaker 12: of years ago.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: So yeah, I'll take it off one thanks Dominate that
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: has good stuff. Yeah, the linebacker spot I think is fair.
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: The linebacker depth. You know what do I want to see?
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: I think it's twofold for me. kJ Britt. Is he
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: a one for one for Jack Gibbons, Like if roberts
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: Plain gets hurt again like he did at the end
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: of last year. Jack Gibbons wasn't great, but wasn't terrible.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: It is serviceable in that spot. Does kJ Britt give
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: you enough of that third linebacker where you know he
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: can fill in for three four games, you know, a
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: stretch of games and you don't lose too much with
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: roberts Plain being banged up. I think that's a big one.
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: And then you mentioned the two young guys, ear Obizor
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: or Khalil Jacobs. Can one of those guys pop. It
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: does feel like a spot where they kind of, you know,
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: maybe punted a little bit to next off season on
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: inside linebacker. I don't know if this is what it is. Analytically,
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: it's not a very valuable position anymore. Maybe they feel
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: like it's not a real needle mover. So we have Spallane,
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: we have Ls. We like that tandem together will be
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: okay for one more season with those two guys, but
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: we'll see on that. So I think that that's a
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: spot that hopefully we get into next offseason and we're
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: starting to talk about them drafting for depth, you know,
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: drafting depth that linebacker, corner, maybe safety at that point,
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: you know, places like that that that we're talking a
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: little bit more about, not needing to draft an edge
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: rusher high because they just need a guy that can play,
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: not needing to draft a left tackle high because they
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: just need a left tackle. We're getting there. We're getting
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: there slowly but surely, a lot of calls coming in.
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: This is Eddie in New York. What's up, Eddie?
- 1:50:05Speaker 5: Eddie?
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: Eddie going once? All right, give us a call back.
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: Kendall's in North Carolina. Let's up, Kendall. Oh maybe so
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: those lines are lines? Yeah? Mark is in Connecticut. What's
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: up Mark?
- 1:50:21Speaker 10: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call.
- 1:50:23Speaker 12: As always, I was at.
- 1:50:25Speaker 10: Training camp on Sunday. I was trying to get a hold.
- 1:50:27Speaker 5: Of you guys, but never was able to.
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: So that's all right.
- 1:50:31Speaker 10: Hey, Eli, Reardon looked really, really smooth. I'm really excited
- 1:50:35Speaker 10: to see him with the pads on and see if
- 1:50:37Speaker 10: he can actually move some guys. And the other the
- 1:50:41Speaker 10: other thing is, is there actually a possibility that they
- 1:50:45Speaker 10: actually keep all seven wide receivers because obviously I like
- 1:50:49Speaker 10: Fton Chisholm, and I like Kyle Williams because he was
- 1:50:52Speaker 10: a third round you know pick last year, so and
- 1:50:55Speaker 10: and the other the other.
- 1:50:56Speaker 5: Five are really really good and are solid.
- 1:50:59Speaker 10: So is there actually a possibility of keeping seven? Have
- 1:51:02Speaker 10: they ever done that before or do they normally only
- 1:51:04Speaker 10: keep six?
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: Yeah? Thanks for the call mark as always, Sorry fun
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: didn't they keep like eight last year initially? So there's
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: a big difference, and I think this is important. There's
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: a big difference between what you keep initially and what
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: you actually keep. Right, So, in theory, they could go
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: through roster cutdowns with all seven guys on the roster
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: because they don't want to risk putting ft and Chishem
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: on waivers or Kyle Williams on waivers. You know, Matt
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: Collins wouldn't go on waivers. So if you're looking for
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: a surprise cut, it might be like a guy like
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: Matt Collins who they actually plan on bringing back on
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: the practice squad and then finding opening for him because
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: he doesn't have to pass through waivers. But at the
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: end of the day, like do you go into week
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: one with seven wide receivers on your roster or is
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: there another move that you're waiting to make and you
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: just want to protect all seven of them.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: They kept eight last year, Yeah, and that lasted about
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: thirteen Yeah, so could they keep to your point? Could
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: they keep seven and then you find a trade partner? Yeah,
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: they do something with with maccollins or whatever. Sure, I
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: don't know if mac collen's going to go for that.
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: I think he'd leave some money on the table if
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: he did that. But yeah, they're not gonna have seven
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: wide receivers on their week one roster. I would be
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: very surprised if that ended up being the case.
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: All Right, eight more minutes to go on the show.
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: There's one other thing I wanted to mention that I
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: caught my eye right before the show started. Ted winn fell,
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: a ball nooer fellow film Junkie had a really good
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: UH ranking of the offensive play callers in the NFL
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: Top ten play callers. He kind of did what Jeremy
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: Fowler does. He went around to a bunch of defensive
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: coordinators and pulled the defensive coordinators on their opponents on
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: their the play callers. So it's play callers not coordinators.
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: So the head coaches are in here, right, So it's
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: not just OC's, it's offensive mind, offensive play callers, offensive architects,
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: offensive mind. Sure, so no surprise here my boys. Number one,
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: I do think it's a little bit of no surprise.
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: I do think it's a little bit of Kyle Shanahan.
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: I would.
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: I can't say it should be McVeigh.
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: Mcvay's number two.
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: Okay, but like you wouldn't be you would be surprised
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: if McVeigh was ahead of Shanahan.
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised. I think mcvay's maybe a better
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: head coach and Kyle shan and Kyle Shanahan is a
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: better offensive architect, and maybe those are two different things.
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: I guess maybe I give it to McVeigh. He just
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: said his quarterback when MVP.
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: He did, I give it to m his quarterback's really good.
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: Number two is McVay. Number three is Ben Johnson, another
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: one of my guys. Number four is Matt Lafleur with
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: the Green Bay Packers. Again, separate the play caller from
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: the head coach. I guess, yeah, Okay, this one surprised
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: me pretty high. Liam Cone number five with the Jaguars.
- 1:53:59Speaker 2: I thought that was a little I think I.
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: Kind of creative last year. I might even had it
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: fam ahead of the flour.
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: This one, to me, you know, sometimes the Oscars give
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: out like a Best Actor for as a lifetime Achievement award.
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: Andy Reid at number six, to me is a little
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: bit of a lifetime achievement award. That offense last year
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: was not good, but maybe they're saying it was, you know,
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: collective work. Yeah, and like you know, they had some
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: injuries and you know, their talent wasn't great and all
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. Number seven underrated play caller, but
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: I think maybe a little higher or than the guy
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: at number eight, Shane Steichen with the Colts. Really good,
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: really good RPO. Now somebody's starting to follow number eight.
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: Josh McDaniel too far down with the New England Patriots.
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: So that's why I brought this up. Josh comes in
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: at number eight. A couple of notable things. Let me
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: finish the top ten and then I'll get to Josh's
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: right up. Number nine. The new head coach of the
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: Las Vegas Raiders whore just the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: Clint Kubiak, Number nine, and number ten another one of
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: my boys, Mike McDaniel with the Chargers. So Josh McDaniels
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: at number eight. A couple of things from the blurb
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: or the right up that I thought were interesting or
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: stood out. The first one was, well, first of all,
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: he did receive a first place vote, so somebody thinks
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: he's the best play caller in football. Some of the
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: one defensive coordinator at least thinks that some also did
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: not have him ranked. So yeah, it was a wide
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: sort of variety.
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: Is this kind of what happened with Drake May in
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: the Yes, yes, but.
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: There is a NFL defensive coordinator that thinks that Josh
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: McDaniels is the best player.
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: Who did they like really pants last year?
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: They really pants a lot of I know, but who
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: got it? Who got it?
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: Like really bad? Trying to remember?
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: So a couple of things here while while you're trying
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: to remember that.
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: It was Aaron Glenn, do we think was Aaron Glenn?
- 1:55:58Speaker 2: Could have been one head coach. This was a head coach.
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: So it's not just DC's There are some head coaches involved.
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: To one head coach pointed out his you know Belichicknis,
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: you know his ability so I love this quote his
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: ability to call the game to win the game, not
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: to put up the most points or the most style points.
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: So the exact quote is I feel like Josh, and
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: it's the Bill Belichick influence. He calls the game to
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: win the game. He doesn't necessarily call the game to
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: have the best offense. I give him a lot of
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: credit for that. That's what I think some of those
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: guys at the top of the list do not do.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: That is the difference to me between Josh McDaniels and
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: those Shaneyhan guys. And by the way, there's nothing wrong
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: with that. Does he leave some metrics, whether it's literal
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: points and yards or some advanced metrics on the table, maybe, yeah,
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: maybe he does. But he's just trying to go out
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: and win the game. And that's where the game plan
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: offense comes in. And you know, one week this guy's
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: heavily featured, another week you don't see him at all
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: because he's hunting the matchups. That should be a rare trait.
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: That should be the bit if I were hiring either
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: side of the ball a coach to call plays, that
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: would be the bare minimum for me. Yeah, Like, do
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: you care about the numbers yes or no, and the
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: answer should be no.
- 1:57:15Speaker 2: Care about the wins, right, you know, we have to
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: pass it fifty times or we have to run it
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: fifty times, we're gonna win the game where we need.
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: It's kind of crazy that's become a rare trait, but
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: it's maybe Josh McDaniel's best trait.
- 1:57:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that one and the other one that
- 1:57:29Speaker 2: I thought was really interesting. A defensive coordinator also noted
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: that Shanahan and this is Ted Riding, Shanahan and McVeigh
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: have relatively easy third and long drop back concepts to
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: prepare for, whereas McDaniel's drop back menu is much more
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: comprehensive and harder to defend. I think that that's a
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: really really good point. I think McDaniels has a lot
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: more variety, and a lot of that is because of
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: all the conversions of the routes that are within the scheme,
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: But in general, I think that their third down drop
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: back game has a lot more variety within it than
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: the Shanahan and McVeigh tree. Right, and so number eight.
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: I think that the reason why I brought it up
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: is just because it's Patriots, but also because I do
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: think that there's still maybe a smaller ground swell after
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: last year. But I still think that there's a group
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: of people that, for some reason just think jud Josh
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: McDaniels is not a good play caller and not a
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: good offensive coordinator. So this is people in the league,
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: people he goes up against on a weekly basis, telling
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: you that he's a top ten play caller in football.
- 1:58:34Speaker 2: There's thirty two teams and he's number eight, So he's
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: in the top fourth of the league in play callers,
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: up there with all of my guys. So the shanahan's,
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: the mcveigh's, the Ben Johnson's, he's right up there. So
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: the Patriots offense in real can I just have this too?
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: So after that quote about he doesn't necessarily call the
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: game to have the best offense, a head coach said that, yes,
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: so Ted follows up. Coaches universally agreed with the notion
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: that McDaniel's hauling games to win them. He understands situational football,
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: and that's not always the case with some elite play callers.
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: That is such I cannot for years I've been yelling this.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: It can't help yourself here are because here is here's
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: NFL coaches saying, if you're somebody who's out on McDaniels
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: because their son of w oo motion r pos, we're
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: gonna put the left tackle in motion. And that right
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: there the situational element of it that these other guys
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: still can't do and frankly don't seem interested in learning's
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: such at is such a I didn't see this quote
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: until right now. Is such an advantage for the Patriots
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: that McDaniel's understanding of situational football. It shouldn't be anybody
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: who's calling plays in the NFL should understand situational football,
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: but they don't. That is such a major event for
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: the Patriots. Do not sleep on that.
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: This is not college football where there's a committee that
- 1:59:58Speaker 2: decides who the twelve best teams are and they go
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: into a playoffs. Right, this is the NFL where wins
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: and losses is what decides who makes the playoffs.
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: I thought, this isn't college football where the coaches don't
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: understand the situation.
- 2:00:09Speaker 2: But this isn't the BCS. Right, We're not grading teams
- 2:00:12Speaker 2: on style points. Just win, baby, that's all that matters.
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: So Patriots offense and good hands next week, we'll be
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: back on Catch twenty two. There is practice on Wednesday
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: next week from ten to eleven thirty when it's scheduled,
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: probably later, so we'll probably be a little later in
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: the day on that day, but it is a walk through,
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: so hopefully not too much later in the day, but
- 2:00:32Speaker 2: we'll keep you updated on that. I think we said
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: two thirty maybe as a tip time, so maybe around
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: two thirty ish, so we'll keep you updated. Just bear
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: with us the live show because we do have training
- 2:00:43Speaker 2: camp at alex and I need to cover and need
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: to report on, so there's a lot of moving parts
- 2:00:47Speaker 2: during the training camp time of year. Patriots Unfiltered hopefully
- 2:00:51Speaker 2: tomorrow during practice if we don't get rained out and
- 2:00:55Speaker 2: moved inside, So we'll keep you updated on Patriots dot
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: Com with that as well. But we'll be back this
- 2:01:00Speaker 2: show next week on Wednesday. We be a little bit
