- 0:00History is strange, it's alien, and it won't give us what we
- 0:04would like to have. On a crisp autumn morning in
- 0:09Coffeyville, KS, happened to be October 5th, 1892, a group known
- 0:16as the Dalton Gang made their bold and ultimately fatal move.
- 0:22This was not just some run-of-the-mill heist.
- 0:24It was an ambitious, some might say foolhardy attempt to rob two
- 0:30banks simultaneously in broad daylight.
- 0:35It would become the infamous Coffeyville Raid, a defining
- 0:39moment in the Old West lore and the story of the Daltons in
- 0:42their last stand as one of greed, ambition and spectacular
- 0:47miscalculation. The Dalton brothers, Frank, Bob
- 0:53Gratt and Emmett did not start off on the wrong side of the
- 0:57law. In fact, they had followed a
- 0:59more respectful path in the beginning, working as lawmen
- 1:03just as the older brother Frank had LED them to do, who is a
- 1:06deputy US Marshall. Things took a tragic turn in
- 1:091887 when Frank was killed in the line of duty, his death
- 1:13deeply affecting the family, especially his younger brothers
- 1:17Bob Gratt and Emmett. By the early 1890's the
- 1:20remaining Dalton's had shifted from upholding the law to
- 1:24breaking it. Led by Bob Dalton, the gang
- 1:28became notorious for robbing trains and banks in the
- 1:30Oklahoma, Kansas area. Bob had a dangerous ambition.
- 1:36He wanted to outshine the legacy of the Jesse James Gang.
- 1:40In Bob's mind, robbing 2 banks at once was a surefire way to do
- 1:44that. And the Coffeyville job would be
- 1:47different from their earlier heists.
- 1:49Wasn't just about quick cash, was about making a name for
- 1:53themselves. The Daltons didn't just stroll
- 1:56into town one morning with guns blazing.
- 1:59They had spent days, weeks planning the attack, scoping out
- 2:03Coffeyville, familiarizing themselves with the layout.
- 2:07Bob had a specific strategy in mind.
- 2:09The gang would split into two groups.
- 2:12One would hit the CM Condon and Company Bank, and another would
- 2:15hit the First National Bank at the same time.
- 2:18Then they would ride out with bags full of cash before anyone
- 2:21was able to organize a response. Bob Gratt and Emma Dalton, along
- 2:27with their friends Bill Power and Dick Broadwell, rode into
- 2:30town in the early mornings of October 5th, 1892.
- 2:35They tried to disguise themselves, wearing long coats
- 2:39and false beards, hoping they would not be recognized.
- 2:43But the problem was they were infamous and Coffeyville wasn't
- 2:48a place where strangers went unnoticed.
- 2:51Despite their attempts to hide their identities, sharp eyed
- 2:54locals quickly grew suspicious. The gang split up, entered both
- 3:00banks, sticking to their plan. In the Condon Bank, Bob Dalton
- 3:04demanded the cash, while in the First National Bank Grat did the
- 3:07same. But outside things were falling
- 3:10apart quite quickly. Coffeyville was, and still is a
- 3:15small, tight knit community and it didn't take long for word to
- 3:18spread that the Dalton's were in town.
- 3:20In fact, one of the town's citizens, man by the name of
- 3:24Alec McKenna, had spotted the gang as they rode in.
- 3:28Recognizing them despite their poor disguises, he had raised
- 3:32the alarm. What happened next was the stuff
- 3:35of legend. Townspeople refusing to let
- 3:38their town be terrorized and robbed, armed themselves with
- 3:42rifles and pistols. Coffeyville was not going down
- 3:45without a fight, and as the gang tried to make their getaway,
- 3:48they found themselves in the middle of a full blown firefight
- 3:53with the citizens of Coffeyville.
- 3:56By the time the Dalton Gang emerged from the banks with
- 3:59sacks of stolen money, the streets of Coffeyville were
- 4:02swarming with armed citizens. The gang's horses had been
- 4:05moved. They were forced to find cover
- 4:08and try to shoot their way out. What followed was a chaotic,
- 4:11brutal gunfight that claimed lives on both sides.
- 4:15Bullets flew from all directions as the Daltons tried to fight
- 4:18their way out of the deadly ambush.
- 4:20Bob and Grat were gunned down almost immediately.
- 4:23Bill Power and Dick Broadwell were also killed in a gunfight,
- 4:27though not before wounding several townsfolk.
- 4:30Emmett Dalton, the youngest of the brothers, was hit multiple
- 4:33times but somehow survived. He was dragged away, barely
- 4:37alive, after the smoke cleared. Marshall's Charles T Conley, one
- 4:41of the local heroes, was killed in the shootout, along with four
- 4:44other brave citizens. It wasn't a victory without loss
- 4:48for Coffeyville, but they had stood their ground.
- 4:52The Coffeyville raid would mark the bloody end of the Dalton
- 4:54gang. The audacity of trying to rob
- 4:57two banks at once had backfired spectacularly, leaving all but
- 5:01one of the gang dead in the streets.
- 5:04Emma Dalton, riddled with gunshot wounds, was taken into
- 5:07custody. He would later stand trial and
- 5:09was sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled after serving
- 5:13only 14 years, and his survival one of the more remarkable
- 5:16aspects of the story. He lived to write, lived to tell
- 5:19the story, even writing about it the book later on in life.
- 5:25For Coffeyville, the raid left a deep mark.
- 5:27The bravery of its citizens became a source of pride.
- 5:30The town itself became part of the mythos of the Old West.
- 5:34Today, the Dalton Defenders Museum in Coffeyville
- 5:37commemorates that day. And you can go there and
- 5:40celebrate Dalton Defender Days this weekend.
- 5:45The Coffeyville raid is remembered not just for the
- 5:47sheer boldness of the Dalton Gang, but for the Defiance
- 5:50spirit, the town that refused to be victimized.
- 5:53It's one of those quintessential stories of the Old West, where
- 5:56outlaws sought fortune and fame only to meet their end in a
- 6:00dusty gunfight. Bob Dalton's ambition to outdo
- 6:04Jesse James came crashing down in Coffeyville.
- 6:07What he had hoped would be his gang's crowning achievement
- 6:10turned into their graveyard. In the end, the Dolton Gangs
- 6:14last stand was not about the money, it was about making a
- 6:17name for themselves. And ironically, they did, but
- 6:20for their failure rather than their success.
- 6:24Coffeyville, KS was forever etched into Western history on
- 6:28that October day in 1892 as those ordinary citizens stood up
- 6:34to the most notorious outlaws of the time.
- 6:36And in doing so, they cemented the legacy of both the town and
- 6:39the Dolton Gang, the legends of the American West.
