- 0:10Amber Kuhn: TPR nation, this is Amber Kuhn. Thank you for
- 0:13joining me on today's Fallow up Friday, where I'll be recapping
- 0:17this week's episode highlights and action items. On Monday,
- 0:20Matt and Micah were talking about marketing, and if you
- 0:23missed this episode, you have to go back and listen to the
- 0:27opening quote. Or for those who have Matt's book, check out page
- 0:3184. All of this was to point out that fancy graphics and splashy
- 0:34websites are not going to get you all the clients in the
- 0:38world, and that's because it's playing office and you're
- 0:41missing the core essence of your prospects questions. The guys
- 0:45pointed out that this is the case when you look at something
- 0:48valuable for clients, such as when Micah is presenting
- 0:51buckets. The team could make a fancy illustration of this, but
- 0:55really the core of why that tool is so beneficial is how it's
- 0:58articulated to clients. Now the reason they wanted to talk about
- 1:02this, what as soon as airing in August, is because by now you
- 1:06should have done your mid year review, and you need to remember
- 1:09that there's a lag from prospecting and marketing to
- 1:13getting new clients onboarded. And for the guys, they said that
- 1:16that time period is about 18 months. So there's no excuse to
- 1:20not be doing marketing and looking at how you're going to
- 1:23practice and whatever you're doing, you need to commit to it
- 1:27for at least a year. Matt and Micah took some time to talk
- 1:30about their marketing channels, and the first was social, and
- 1:34they said this is a do what works question, and they wanted
- 1:37to point out the difference between advertising and
- 1:40marketing, or with advertising, you aren't expecting a direct
- 1:44return on your dollar. With marketing, you are expecting
- 1:47return to come in, and social needs to fall into that
- 1:50category, because you aren't supporting the cause of
- 1:53Instagram. For Micah, YouTube ended up being something that
- 1:57worked for him, but the guys pointed out that you have to be
- 2:00careful with social because it's a place where people can just
- 2:04sit and play office. You need to be able to show that you've been
- 2:08able to bring clients in from social media. So for marketing
- 2:11activities, you need to have a number associated with it. So
- 2:15how many podcasts are you recording? How many centers of
- 2:18influence are you calling? And social media needs to have a
- 2:21time cap. The guys talked about their goals related to marketing
- 2:25and how everything needs a path. Ultimately, you need to have a
- 2:29call to action, get people off of someone else's platform and
- 2:32onto yours. So with Rebecca, he wants to transform lives, and he
- 2:36knows he needs to also give those who are listening to him
- 2:39or watching him on YouTube a lead magnet to get them to a
- 2:43site and get their email address. And with the content
- 2:46he's creating, he's essentially trying to establish that he has
- 2:50more expertise than anyone else, and that's why having a niche is
- 2:53so important, if you try to talk to everyone, you talk to no one
- 2:57with marketing. You also need to have a sounding board instead of
- 3:01KPIs and what your range of success looks like. And
- 3:04remember, you need to have a time period along with how much
- 3:08money you're going to spend. The guys also said, You need to look
- 3:11at how much time you're going to invest in being the best at
- 3:15whatever channel you're focusing on. Micah then shared how once
- 3:19he's driven people to his website, he'll then start
- 3:22reaching out with either lead magnets or for in person events,
- 3:25and with how he's doing all of that. He said you have to try
- 3:29different avenues for him. He sometimes has to mix it up. And
- 3:32this is all a part of the data that he's building to see what
- 3:36works. Now, just to be clear, this is all a lot of work, and
- 3:39you have to decide whether you're committed to being
- 3:42successful, and some of the work can be incredibly tedious. You
- 3:46need to do what works and be intentional about what you do.
- 3:50The guys wrapped up by talking about doing in person
- 3:53presentations and how you have to be able to give your
- 3:56presentation at a subconscious level, because if not, then
- 3:59you're only thinking about what you're going to say next. In
- 4:03order to deliver value, you have to be able to connect with
- 4:06people. Let's get into action items. Put the designated
- 4:09activities each week on your calendar that will move your
- 4:13advertising and marketing forward and measure what
- 4:16matters. Write down what you're doing, the time involved and
- 4:19your expectations, so that you can see your success rate and
- 4:23how to improve. On Thursday, Jamie was talking about how to
- 4:26grow your business and where you are in your career. She said
- 4:30there are three stages you can go through as an advisor, which
- 4:33are growth, freedom and enterprise stages. Now with
- 4:36this, she said, don't judge yourself compared to where other
- 4:40people are. Focus on where you are and what matters, and don't
- 4:44forget that it's not all about the growth. You can't forget
- 4:47that you're helping real people with their entire life savings,
- 4:51and they're solving so that they don't outlive their retirement
- 4:54savings. Jamie spent Thursday focused on the growth stage,
- 4:58when you have less than 30 million assets under management
- 5:01and about 30 to 50 households. She said the only thing you
- 5:05should be focused on is growing your practice. So you need to
- 5:08look at where you are, where you want to be, and what steps you
- 5:12need to take to get there. You need to look at your calendar
- 5:15and see how much time you're spending in your email or just
- 5:19getting more and more credentials that's just playing
- 5:22office. You need to look at your marketing and do everything you
- 5:26can to bring on more clients. Look at what's already working
- 5:29for you and where your clients are coming from. From there, you
- 5:33can start to do a trends now. Jamie shared an exercise on
- 5:36this, which is figuring out who you're speaking to. And as Matt
- 5:40and Micah mentioned on Monday, if you're speaking to everyone,
- 5:44you're speaking to no one. So for this exercise to first
- 5:47decide which planet you want to target, then which continent and
- 5:51which country, in state and so on, until you really build to
- 5:54the location, then look at the clients you already have,
- 5:57because those are the ones who are willing to pay for your
- 6:01services. And keep going layer by layer to get clear on who
- 6:04those people are, their ages, relationships, where they work.
- 6:08And from there, you can start to develop your niche. So with
- 6:11marketing, you really need to narrow this down and focus
- 6:15consider how you can establish a reputation that is so profound
- 6:18that business is attracted to you. Now, what about outsourcing
- 6:22your marketing? Jamie said, every time you hire a marketing
- 6:26agency, you're going to pay a ton of money and they're still
- 6:29going to ask those same questions. She mentioned,
- 6:32they'll want to know your target audience and your avatar, so you
- 6:36need to go through all of your data. Now, one of Jamie's
- 6:39biggest tips was to look at what kind of recreational activities
- 6:43do your clients participate in. She said doing the things that
- 6:46you enjoy doing with your clients is a profound referral
- 6:50source. She also said that in this stage, Centers of Influence
- 6:53don't know how to refer to you. You need to empower them to know
- 6:57how to talk to you, so invite them to the activities that
- 7:00you're doing for your client and talk to them about a random case
- 7:04study. You have to teach Cois and people in your network how
- 7:08to mention you without it being awkward, and the best ways to
- 7:11help them understand what you do. Now, once you've narrowed
- 7:15down who you should be working with, then you need to focus on
- 7:18the topics you feel you can develop an expertise on and that
- 7:22you have an interest in. You want to become that go to person
- 7:26on a particular topic. And when you do that, you'll also just
- 7:29naturally get a lot of happenstance knowledge. Once you
- 7:32have this, Jamie said thing, go write all your content on this.
- 7:36Remember everything you're willing to work in marketing
- 7:39will work. So when you're in this growth stage, Jamie said
- 7:43you need to be refining your client presentations so that
- 7:46clients leave your office wanting to refer someone else to
- 7:49you because of the value you've delivered, and you need to go on
- 7:53your marketing and help you grow your practice. That wraps up
- 7:57this week's recap. So TBR nation, if you're looking for
