- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume podcast Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Thursday. That means it's time to enter the Thursday Thunderdome.
- 0:24Speaker 1: On today's show, our special guests welcompete alongside my co host,
- 0:30Speaker 1: my companion, my BFF, professional sports better Simon Hunter, in
- 0:37Speaker 1: an epic test of wagers and wits that's made this
- 0:39Speaker 1: show the most celebrated sports betting trivia show in history
- 0:44Speaker 1: and the marvel of the Western world. Simon. That introduction
- 0:49Speaker 1: gets more mortal of up to every single time we
- 0:52Speaker 1: do this show. I see that you have left the
- 0:55Speaker 1: beautiful beaches of Lake Tahoe and you are now back
- 1:00Speaker 1: in your hovel on the East Coast, a new beggining
- 1:05Speaker 1: reason for them. Then, I'm just kid. I want to
- 1:09Speaker 1: sing the all the songs, but England's in the finals. Chat,
- 1:11Speaker 1: We've made it, it's coming home, We've done It's I
- 1:24Speaker 1: am just listen. Only one of us is allowed to
- 1:28Speaker 1: sing on this podcast. I cut myself off. I didn't
- 1:31Speaker 1: go full a song, but I'm just so excited right now.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I'm excited for you. Look, I think it was last
- 1:37Speaker 1: week or the week before when we were on the
- 1:38Speaker 1: podcast and we were watching England beat Germany and they
- 1:42Speaker 1: scored both of their goals while we were on the show,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and you know, joke lost your marbles and had to
- 1:47Speaker 1: leave the show for a second. And I was thinking
- 1:49Speaker 1: about you yesterday while watching UH the England Denmark game.
- 1:56Speaker 1: You know, we have been bought by Better Collective. They
- 1:59Speaker 1: are a English company. We had a present a two
- 2:02Speaker 1: hour presentation this morning for our new bosses at Better Collective,
- 2:07Speaker 1: the first one that we've had for them, reviewing the business,
- 2:10Speaker 1: going over our future plans UH since the acquisition. And
- 2:15Speaker 1: I watched the game yesterday and I was rooting for
- 2:18Speaker 1: England because I'm rooting for you, and I'm a bit
- 2:19Speaker 1: of an England phile, and I just love England generally,
- 2:22Speaker 1: but part of me wanted Denmark just because I wanted
- 2:25Speaker 1: my new bosses to be in as good a mood
- 2:28Speaker 1: as possible when we gave our presentation about the business
- 2:32Speaker 1: this morning. I don't care what even happens anymore. I
- 2:34Speaker 1: I do. I do hate Italy, but not as much
- 2:36Speaker 1: as I hated Germany or the French. Those are the
- 2:38Speaker 1: big ones in England. We really hate the French, We
- 2:41Speaker 1: really hate the Germans. So I know it's gonna happen.
- 2:43Speaker 1: There's no way England beats Italy. Italy is so much
- 2:46Speaker 1: better than us. I love the bookmakers. They made us
- 2:49Speaker 1: favorite because they know Joe Public's gonna bet England. Most
- 2:52Speaker 1: people are gonna bet England. But I'm peaking right now, Chat,
- 2:55Speaker 1: so I'm just gonna be celebrating until the game, which
- 2:58Speaker 1: we all know it's gonna go to penalty kicks. Harry,
- 3:00Speaker 1: he's gonna hit the crossbar, he's gonna miss. Italy's gonna
- 3:02Speaker 1: win and penalty kick. So it's a it's a hard life.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It was an amazing match yesterday. Truly loved it. I'm
- 3:08Speaker 1: really excited for you. I am going to be rooting
- 3:11Speaker 1: for you and for all our friends across the pond
- 3:15Speaker 1: on the British Isles, because that's what I would like
- 3:17Speaker 1: to see happen. Okay. Also, I love the days. Simon
- 3:22Speaker 1: your first challenger. He is a young content king. His
- 3:25Speaker 1: passion for all things baseball have helped him amass a
- 3:29Speaker 1: YouTube audience of almost two hundred thousand subscribers, which is
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'm honestly jealous of his YouTube audience. Considered the greatest
- 3:38Speaker 1: South Carolina game cod Baseball product since Jackie Bradley Jr.
- 3:44Speaker 1: It's Mark Luino a k A giraffe neck Mark. What's
- 3:51Speaker 1: going on? Body? What's up? Everybody? Thanks for having me on,
- 3:53Speaker 1: super excited and yes, go game. Cox is always represent
- 3:57Speaker 1: South Carolina whenever we can. I feel like your neck
- 3:59Speaker 1: is not as giraffe like as your name has sort
- 4:02Speaker 1: of promised. When I was in my younger days, I
- 4:05Speaker 1: filled into my body a little bit more recently. You know,
- 4:08Speaker 1: when I was around seventeen eighteen nineteen, the next seemed
- 4:10Speaker 1: a little bit more elongated than it does now. Did
- 4:13Speaker 1: did you give yourself that nickname or did someone give
- 4:16Speaker 1: it to you? So I was streaming on Twitch and
- 4:18Speaker 1: it was under a different name at the time. It
- 4:20Speaker 1: was Jubiling Gamer, which I was doing and basically I
- 4:23Speaker 1: was playing FIFA opening packs and my Twitch account got
- 4:26Speaker 1: banned because one of my roommates at South Carolina came
- 4:29Speaker 1: in and mooned the camera. So my Twitch account got
- 4:31Speaker 1: banned in because everyone was making fun of how long
- 4:33Speaker 1: my neck was at the time, like, oh, you have
- 4:35Speaker 1: a giraftneck. I was like the best way to get
- 4:37Speaker 1: these thousands of viewers back to my channel and watching
- 4:39Speaker 1: After I got banned changed the name to Draft Neck,
- 4:42Speaker 1: so that's that's where it came from. I can't believe
- 4:44Speaker 1: that somebody in college mooned alive audience. That just doesn't
- 4:48Speaker 1: seem college. Like Simon, your second challenger today, is one
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the hardest working, longest, tenured, handsomest men behind the
- 4:57Speaker 1: scenes at the Action Network. Also very much in front
- 5:01Speaker 1: of the scenes because he would do his Saturday you know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: hangover videos. His passion for the world of sports betting
- 5:08Speaker 1: is eclipsed only by his passion for tasty. Taylor Swift
- 5:13Speaker 1: jam sessions are very own. Jimmy Garoppolo looklike Danny Donna Hue.
- 5:19Speaker 1: What's going on? Buddy? What's up? Guys? Thanks for having me? Yeah. Unfortunately, yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm not in my natural state today. I'm very clear minded,
- 5:27Speaker 1: so I can only imagine that's gonna hurt me. You
- 5:30Speaker 1: are probably uh you are You mean you're not hungover,
- 5:34Speaker 1: but you probably are overcaffeinated. I'm Duncan. This is definitely true.
- 5:39Speaker 1: How many Duncan donuts have you had today? One and
- 5:42Speaker 1: a half? You want to hear something the shocking chat.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I've never drank a full cup of coffee in my
- 5:47Speaker 1: entire life. I've had a sip, never dranking a full
- 5:49Speaker 1: cup of coffee. Don't like it. I'm just I'm British tea.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I just drink tea if I'm gonna drink something like that,
- 5:55Speaker 1: but I was gonna go through. I would love to
- 5:57Speaker 1: hear what nicknames we would all have based on the internet,
- 6:00Speaker 1: because I mean, you got all the light. That's a
- 6:02Speaker 1: nice that's not that bad being called giraff snack like
- 6:05Speaker 1: off top my head. Just this week someone told me
- 6:08Speaker 1: I looked like a potato with down syndrome. I feel
- 6:11Speaker 1: like I want to hear what Chad's is big? What
- 6:12Speaker 1: what do people call you? Chad? God? I don't know.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I can't. I can't think of anything mean because I'm
- 6:19Speaker 1: just not that self critical. You can think of it
- 6:23Speaker 1: for me. Signon, Here we go. Should we play the game?
- 6:26Speaker 1: We do it? Here's how it's played today. You'll answer
- 6:29Speaker 1: to two kinds of questions. Traditional trivia questions about sports, sports, betting,
- 6:34Speaker 1: and the world at large. Second, completely subjective and totally assinine,
- 6:40Speaker 1: open endd questions or prompts that I alone will judge.
- 6:43Speaker 1: To accumulate points, you must answer the trivia questions correctly,
- 6:46Speaker 1: and also convinced me that your responses to those open
- 6:49Speaker 1: ended prompts are better than the responses from your opponents. Reminder,
- 6:55Speaker 1: I'm rooting for Simon Hunter. Let's begin Part one. Got
- 7:00Speaker 1: a little uh Atlanta themed question here ready. In the
- 7:04Speaker 1: NBA's Eastern Conference Finals, the upstart Atlanta Hawks fell to
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Box, adding one more chapter to Georgia's long
- 7:13Speaker 1: history of sports shortcomings. Let's look at a few recent examples. Mark.
- 7:19Speaker 1: In the two thousand eighteen College Football Playoff National Championship Game,
- 7:23Speaker 1: the Georgia Bulldogs blew a thirteen point halftime lead. They
- 7:27Speaker 1: lost to Alabama in overtime after the Crimson Tide brought
- 7:31Speaker 1: in freshman Ta taga via Looa at halftime to replace
- 7:36Speaker 1: this starting quarterback who later transferred to Oklahoma and is
- 7:40Speaker 1: now a starter in the NFL. Mark, this one's for you, okay,
- 7:45Speaker 1: So that quarterback would be Jalen Hurts. Well done. I
- 7:49Speaker 1: feel like Mark is going to be really good at
- 7:50Speaker 1: this game. I do a lot of trivia on my channel.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Granted it's baseball, but I've got sports knowledge. I'm in
- 7:56Speaker 1: the zone. I feel like he's as he knows everything
- 7:59Speaker 1: about Danny. Danny the two thousand four two thousand five
- 8:03Speaker 1: Atlanta Hawks finished with a record of thirteen and sixty nine,
- 8:07Speaker 1: the worst winning percentage of any protein in Atlanta sports history.
- 8:11Speaker 1: But that team was coached by the talented Mike Woodson,
- 8:16Speaker 1: and the Hawks record would improve each of his six
- 8:19Speaker 1: seasons in Atlanta. Today, Woodson is the coach of this
- 8:23Speaker 1: Big Ten team, returning to his alma mater after Celtics
- 8:28Speaker 1: coach Brad Stevens allegedly turned the job down. Well, thank
- 8:34Speaker 1: you for throwing him that, Brad Stevens hint at the end, Yes,
- 8:38Speaker 1: this would be Indiana in a university. And if we're
- 8:42Speaker 1: gonna be singing Indiana, Indiana, Indiana, we're all for you.
- 8:49Speaker 1: We will fight for the cream and crimson and the
- 8:52Speaker 1: glory of old ayou. I don't need to go on,
- 8:55Speaker 1: but go Hoosiers, all right, Simon. Super Bowl fifty one
- 8:59Speaker 1: is considered the own jewel of Atlanta sports heartbreak. The
- 9:02Speaker 1: Falcons blue third quarter lead before losing to the Patriots
- 9:06Speaker 1: in overtime. Although some fans blame ex coach Dan Quinn,
- 9:11Speaker 1: many more have scapegoaded this now departed offensive coordinator Kyle Shannon.
- 9:19Speaker 1: That is definitely why I blame as well. I gotta
- 9:22Speaker 1: say these were the easiest first round questions we've ever had.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Here's the prompt. Letdowns have been the norm for the
- 9:30Speaker 1: city of Atlanta. They've hosted NFL, NBA, and Major League
- 9:33Speaker 1: Baseball franchises since night and in nearly one and sixty
- 9:37Speaker 1: combined seasons, their teams have captured just a single title,
- 9:42Speaker 1: the Braves World Series. For this prompt, your job is
- 9:49Speaker 1: to cast judgment on another pro sports city. If you
- 9:53Speaker 1: had to select another town to endure a similar stint
- 9:57Speaker 1: of endless heartbreak effective of the Italy, who would you
- 10:01Speaker 1: choose and why? This is a good one. Oh my god,
- 10:04Speaker 1: I know what I would do simon Europe first, such
- 10:07Speaker 1: a layup. Thanks for let me go first. Boston. We
- 10:11Speaker 1: hate you, Boston. Everyone hates Boston. As a Philadelphia sports fan,
- 10:16Speaker 1: it's just never ending heartbreak from them. I think we
- 10:19Speaker 1: got them with the three that we had, the three
- 10:20Speaker 1: oh comeback against the Boston Bruins, which was leaving day.
- 10:23Speaker 1: We didn't want to stand the Cup. We lost Stanley Cup.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Next year the Bruins beat the crap out of us
- 10:27Speaker 1: and they go win a Stanley Cup. I hate, I
- 10:29Speaker 1: hate Boston. Luckily we beat them on the one Super Bowl.
- 10:32Speaker 1: But yeah, if I could cur someone for the next
- 10:34Speaker 1: hundred years, it has to be the people's self proclaimed
- 10:37Speaker 1: title town, Boston. Boston. We all hate you, Listen. I
- 10:41Speaker 1: can't disagree. It was my first instinct. It is obnoxious,
- 10:46Speaker 1: it is insufferable. It is everything that you don't want
- 10:52Speaker 1: to be a part of if you are not someone
- 10:55Speaker 1: who lives in the city and roots for those teams,
- 10:58Speaker 1: which by the way, include Foods. Danny Donahue, Boston native.
- 11:03Speaker 1: He's up right now. So now I see why I
- 11:06Speaker 1: was invited on today. So thanks again for having me. Um.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I get it, I get it. It's an easy answer,
- 11:12Speaker 1: But Chad, it's a reactive answer. It's easy to say,
- 11:16Speaker 1: here's a team that's doing well, here's a city that's
- 11:18Speaker 1: doing well, and and I want to just cast sadness
- 11:21Speaker 1: on them for eternity. That's easy. I'm going to give
- 11:23Speaker 1: you a proactive answer, and it might mean that I'm
- 11:26Speaker 1: never allowed back on this show. No, not by you,
- 11:30Speaker 1: not by you, by our our lovely producer Matt Mitchell.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Because there is a city that's getting too too good
- 11:37Speaker 1: at football, and it will ruin them Oh my god.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I can't believe you're gonna go there. There are certain
- 11:44Speaker 1: things in life and sports that are just correct, and
- 11:47Speaker 1: Buffalo not winning football championships, not winning Super Bowls is correct.
- 11:51Speaker 1: We need them to remain Builds mafia so that we
- 11:53Speaker 1: can still all like them, and I'll root for him
- 11:56Speaker 1: if they win. They're no longer builds mafia, so I
- 11:59Speaker 1: am to can get proactive approach here and saying I
- 12:02Speaker 1: want Buffalo to remain heartbroken. Wow. Wow, that is one
- 12:09Speaker 1: of the meanest things that anybody has ever said to
- 12:12Speaker 1: Matt Mitchter, who is exhibiting extraordinary professionalism by not jumping
- 12:17Speaker 1: onto the podcast right now. You're the reason why I
- 12:20Speaker 1: get up at four o'clock in the afternoon and pump
- 12:22Speaker 1: iron until my chest is positively sick. I'm just gonna
- 12:26Speaker 1: come right out and say it. I hate you. I
- 12:29Speaker 1: hate you forever. I will say this, I don't disagree
- 12:33Speaker 1: with your logic. Years ago, before the Cubs one of
- 12:35Speaker 1: the World Series, a buddy of mine, his name is
- 12:38Speaker 1: Rick Talonder, who is a prominent columnist at the Chicago
- 12:42Speaker 1: Suntimes and for years had been a senior writer at
- 12:44Speaker 1: Sports Illustrated and one of the more decorated sports writers
- 12:47Speaker 1: of the past thirty forty years. He's from Chicago and
- 12:52Speaker 1: he and I were talking before the Cubs one of
- 12:54Speaker 1: the World Series. He was like, I wouldn't mind if
- 12:56Speaker 1: the Cubs never won the World Series because part of
- 12:59Speaker 1: them Conte you need to lose is what makes them
- 13:02Speaker 1: such a lovable, interesting story, and when they win the
- 13:06Speaker 1: World Series, they become just another team. Now, I say
- 13:10Speaker 1: this looking across my podcast studio at the w Flag
- 13:15Speaker 1: and the World Series ticket that I had from two
- 13:17Speaker 1: thousand sixteen. Wouldn't trade it for the world. I want
- 13:20Speaker 1: that from Mitchell. I like your answer, Danny down here,
- 13:24Speaker 1: it is evil. You delivered it with class, So I'm
- 13:27Speaker 1: putting you ahead of signment right now. Mark, you got
- 13:35Speaker 1: some catching. Yeah. So I think this is a little
- 13:37Speaker 1: bit of a ricochet shot at Simon. Unfortunately, I don't
- 13:39Speaker 1: know what it is with the guests taking shots at
- 13:41Speaker 1: the people who are part of this. But I hate
- 13:44Speaker 1: the city of Philadelphia and I want nothing good to
- 13:47Speaker 1: ever happen to any team in that city. I mean,
- 13:50Speaker 1: my saying is it's a garbage city filled with garbage people.
- 13:53Speaker 1: They threw snowballs at Santa Claus. They ate horse poop
- 13:57Speaker 1: after they won the Super Bowl the Eagle, their fans
- 14:00Speaker 1: are deplorable. I hate that city. I feel like it's
- 14:03Speaker 1: such a second rate city, the armpit of America. It's awful.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Nothing good should ever happen in Philadelphia. Their cheese steaks.
- 14:10Speaker 1: You can get a good cheese steak anywhere. Wow wow Wow,
- 14:16Speaker 1: garbage city, second rate city, bad cheese steaks. Doesn't want
- 14:21Speaker 1: anything good to happen. The vitriol level of Philadelphia on that.
- 14:26Speaker 1: In that answer, Simon, we have to say here, I mean,
- 14:30Speaker 1: the guy with the school in South Carolina doesn't know
- 14:31Speaker 1: what a real city looks like. M this is a
- 14:34Speaker 1: really tough one. I loved. I'm not a I'm not
- 14:38Speaker 1: surprised that Boston and Philly are two of the three answers. Yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 1: and I love the Mark's answer. I thought it was
- 14:44Speaker 1: delivered with passion and energy and creativity. And I loved
- 14:48Speaker 1: how he completely went after Philly and like not just
- 14:52Speaker 1: the city but the people, Like he doesn't want anything
- 14:54Speaker 1: good to happen to the people in Philadelphia, but everything.
- 14:58Speaker 1: By the way, that's also the problem. Buffalo is such
- 15:02Speaker 1: an out of the box answer and feels both thoughtful
- 15:05Speaker 1: and creative and like Danny said, proactive. It's good for
- 15:08Speaker 1: the community of Buffalo. Doesn't win. There's more entertainment if
- 15:11Speaker 1: Buffalo doesn't win. Also, there's that little bit of added
- 15:15Speaker 1: sort of juice and poison against Matt Mitchell. I'm giving
- 15:18Speaker 1: it to Danny down here. Let's go. I knew you'd
- 15:22Speaker 1: see the I knew you'd see the light there. Thank you. Now,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you did a very nice job there. Part two, It
- 15:28Speaker 1: pays to be number one. The Jacksonville Jaguar has just
- 15:30Speaker 1: signed number one overall pick Trevor Lawrence to his rookie contract.
- 15:34Speaker 1: But since a new collective Bargaining agreement changed rookie contracts
- 15:38Speaker 1: in two eleven, these signings have been boring. So let's
- 15:43Speaker 1: look back at some other more eventful contracts for number
- 15:46Speaker 1: one overall picks. Signon. Trevor Lawrences deal pales in comparison
- 15:50Speaker 1: to that of this number one overall pick in two
- 15:52Speaker 1: thousand ten with no cap on rookie contractor let me
- 15:58Speaker 1: finish reading the question, because Matt Mitchell worked so hard
- 16:01Speaker 1: on sort of giving the clues. So this quarterback named
- 16:05Speaker 1: Sam Bradford signed a seventy six million dollar rookie deal
- 16:09Speaker 1: worth more than double that of Trevor Lawrence even before inflation,
- 16:13Speaker 1: but he'd never live up to those lofty expectations. In
- 16:15Speaker 1: eight NFL seasons, he'd earned a reputation as a weak
- 16:19Speaker 1: arm injury prone game manager, including a stint with Simon
- 16:24Speaker 1: the Philadelphiagos which you said he didn't live up to
- 16:26Speaker 1: the hype. You're forgetting about his one preseason game where
- 16:29Speaker 1: threw three touchdowns in the first quarter against the Packers,
- 16:32Speaker 1: which I mean, come on, yeah, that's pretty good for
- 16:35Speaker 1: August football. I feel like he made upwards of a
- 16:38Speaker 1: hundred and fifty million in his in his career in
- 16:41Speaker 1: guarantees because of like one decent game in one season
- 16:46Speaker 1: and someone signed him too some massive, massive guaranteed deal.
- 16:50Speaker 1: But whatever, Simon, you got it. Mark. The record for
- 16:54Speaker 1: the largest signing bonus ever given to a drafted pitcher
- 16:58Speaker 1: was set during the two thousand eleven Major League Baseball Draft,
- 17:02Speaker 1: and despite receiving an eight million dollar bonus, this number
- 17:05Speaker 1: one overall pick has lived up to expectations. Today, ten
- 17:09Speaker 1: years later, he's moved to the American League and is
- 17:12Speaker 1: tied with Jacob D. Graham as the third highest paid
- 17:16Speaker 1: player in baseball. That would be Garrett Cole. Garrett Cole,
- 17:23Speaker 1: This is gonna be an intense game, Danny. You gotta
- 17:25Speaker 1: score just to keep up here, Danny. The number one
- 17:29Speaker 1: pick in the two thousand seven NFL draft was quarterback
- 17:32Speaker 1: and infamous bust JaMarcus Russell. However, his rookie contract was
- 17:36Speaker 1: not the largest in his class. That distinction belonged to
- 17:40Speaker 1: this number two overall pick, who became arguably the greatest
- 17:46Speaker 1: NFL y artificist generation with inarguably the greatest nickname. That
- 17:50Speaker 1: would be Megatron Calvin Johnson who These are freaking all
- 17:56Speaker 1: stars on this trivia show. Nobody's missing any question, and
- 18:00Speaker 1: here's the prompt. The best part about any athletes contracts
- 18:04Speaker 1: are the crazy clauses and bizarre bonuses. For example, when
- 18:08Speaker 1: Manna Ramires signed with a Japanese team at the end
- 18:10Speaker 1: of his career, his contract included unlimited free sushi. And
- 18:15Speaker 1: when Roy Oswald won the deciding game of the two
- 18:18Speaker 1: thousand five NLCS, the Astros gave him a two hundred
- 18:22Speaker 1: thousand dollar bulldozer as his bonus. Now imagine you are
- 18:28Speaker 1: a prized rookie signing your first deal with a pro
- 18:31Speaker 1: sports team. What contract clause would you like to add
- 18:35Speaker 1: to the deal? Danny, I feel like I know this answer,
- 18:38Speaker 1: but give it to me. I actually don't think you
- 18:40Speaker 1: to do Chada. This is a it's a it's a
- 18:43Speaker 1: very simple one. All I want is a perfectly right
- 18:47Speaker 1: banana delivered to me every morning, because I ate a
- 18:50Speaker 1: banana for breakfast every day. But I do my grocery
- 18:53Speaker 1: shopping once a week. That means I'm buying bunches of
- 18:56Speaker 1: seven and I'm buying them green because they need to
- 18:58Speaker 1: last all week. So the first two days at least
- 19:01Speaker 1: are green, the last two days at least are brown,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and maybe yet one perfect banana on like a Wednesday
- 19:07Speaker 1: or something. I want every day to be that Wednesday.
- 19:10Speaker 1: So just deliver me it perfectly right banana every morning,
- 19:13Speaker 1: and I'll sign with the Detroit Tigers. I don't care.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I love that answer. You're more of a freak than
- 19:19Speaker 1: I thought. I agree with you about the bananas. I
- 19:23Speaker 1: love bananas. I don't about you. But I put my
- 19:26Speaker 1: banana on a little bit of super health bread toast
- 19:30Speaker 1: with some peanut butter. Sometimes I put a little bit
- 19:33Speaker 1: of cinnamon on top in the morning. Is delicious. And um,
- 19:37Speaker 1: I again, like you, I don't like anything close to
- 19:40Speaker 1: a green banana. I prefer a ripe to overripe banana.
- 19:43Speaker 1: So I completely understand why you'd be very specific in
- 19:46Speaker 1: particular about this very good answer, revealing so much more
- 19:50Speaker 1: about yourself than I think you probably anticipated on the
- 19:53Speaker 1: show Mark, can you beat the beauty and cleanliness of answer?
- 20:00Speaker 1: Mine might get a little messy. It's a little more
- 20:03Speaker 1: out there, it's a little more exotic. I will sign
- 20:05Speaker 1: with any sports team if they could get me a
- 20:07Speaker 1: pet giraffe. Now it's also my namesake on YouTube, but
- 20:10Speaker 1: it is my favorite animal. It's always been. And these
- 20:13Speaker 1: guys are billionaires, they run big companies. They know people
- 20:17Speaker 1: who can get me a giraffe. If you can get
- 20:19Speaker 1: me a pet giraffe to live in my backyard and
- 20:22Speaker 1: wherever my mansion is, with my hundreds of million dollars
- 20:24Speaker 1: to the contract I just signed, I will play for
- 20:26Speaker 1: your miserable franchise, even in Philadelphia. I'll play for you.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Second question, when you get the pet giraffe, would you
- 20:33Speaker 1: include in the contract of clause that the maintenance and
- 20:36Speaker 1: upkeep of set giraffe, it's habitat, etcetera. UH is paid
- 20:42Speaker 1: for by the team in perpetuity. They don't need to
- 20:45Speaker 1: worry about like maintaining it. I'll hire the right people
- 20:48Speaker 1: with the contract. I just got to take care of
- 20:50Speaker 1: my pet giraffe the proper way. I'm also gonna want
- 20:53Speaker 1: to feed my draft. I'm gonna have a relationship with it.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It's my favorite animal. I want to get to know it.
- 20:58Speaker 1: But you get me the animal I'm in. That is
- 21:01Speaker 1: very interesting signon. I've actually experienced having a giraft outside
- 21:07Speaker 1: my window UH in Africa. Woke up and they're just
- 21:10Speaker 1: hanging out. Wait if you'd open up your window and
- 21:11Speaker 1: give them food in the morning, so that if you're
- 21:13Speaker 1: looking for that experience, I would do pretty cool to
- 21:15Speaker 1: have a pet draft, especially the fact that they knock
- 21:17Speaker 1: on your window to get food in the morning. I
- 21:19Speaker 1: kind of misunderstood the question. I thought I had to
- 21:21Speaker 1: be an actual franchise. So I love Kraft Mac and Cheese.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I am a truly a child at heart. So if
- 21:28Speaker 1: I could sign with the Patriots, and that was part
- 21:30Speaker 1: of the clause where you just get never ending free
- 21:32Speaker 1: mac and cheese, I would sign with the Patriots, even
- 21:35Speaker 1: though I hate them. They're Winners and Freemac and Cheese
- 21:38Speaker 1: for Life. So to me, that's a new brand. I
- 21:40Speaker 1: would definitely go with the Patriots. I don't even know
- 21:42Speaker 1: what to say to that answer. You would sign like Danny's.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Danny's is food oriented and it's so simple, and it's
- 21:52Speaker 1: like it's not even about the money. It's just about
- 21:55Speaker 1: the happiness and joy of that one moment in the
- 21:59Speaker 1: morning when he eats the banana. Yours is almost slovenly. Yeah,
- 22:04Speaker 1: mine's weird because I like the weird ones too. I
- 22:06Speaker 1: like the SpongeBob mac and cheese. I like the little pieces.
- 22:09Speaker 1: It's they're more fun to eat. Ken vouch. Oh my gosh,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I gotta say. And I know I feel badly about this.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I love Danny's answering you Chad, thank you. And I
- 22:24Speaker 1: know you're a health guy too, So I had a
- 22:26Speaker 1: feeling that banana what would work nicely. Some people don't
- 22:28Speaker 1: get that that simple happiness. I am with you, Like,
- 22:32Speaker 1: listen to me in the morning. My mornings have become
- 22:35Speaker 1: so peak precious, like the ritual of making the stuff
- 22:39Speaker 1: that I like to have in the morning. It's become
- 22:41Speaker 1: so important to me, like I'm almost upset if I
- 22:43Speaker 1: have to start traveling again. So I totally get the
- 22:47Speaker 1: consistency and beauty of how you want to start your
- 22:50Speaker 1: day with a very specific type of food. I love it,
- 22:54Speaker 1: and I love also like you're not asking for too much,
- 22:57Speaker 1: one thing that is hard to get that will just
- 22:59Speaker 1: make your life better. That's the beauty in it. He
- 23:01Speaker 1: tells me a lot about who you are. By the way,
- 23:04Speaker 1: Mark incredibly greedy and outrageous. Simon, he's just like he's
- 23:10Speaker 1: fucking stop. He just wants to eat mac and cheese. So, Danny, congratulations,
- 23:14Speaker 1: you now lead. You have four points. Mark has two points.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Simon has two points. Where we got a lot of
- 23:20Speaker 1: game left. We got a lot of game left. Part
- 23:22Speaker 1: of three. Lord Stanley's Cup. The Stanley Cup Final ended
- 23:26Speaker 1: last night with the Tampa Bay Lightning beating the Montreal
- 23:30Speaker 1: Canadiens for one to win their second straight Stanley Cup.
- 23:36Speaker 1: To celebrate, let's find out how much you guys know
- 23:41Speaker 1: about the Stanley Cup itself, Danny. The Stanley Cup was
- 23:45Speaker 1: originally a gift from Frederick Arthur Stanley, better known as
- 23:49Speaker 1: the Lord Stanley of Preston, who served as the Governor
- 23:52Speaker 1: General of Canada in the late nineteenth century. This position
- 23:56Speaker 1: still exists today, with governors Generals serve as a vice
- 24:01Speaker 1: regal representative of the Canadian monarch, a royal title currently
- 24:07Speaker 1: held by this person. Name any monarch you've heard of.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Oh no, I'm gonna name any Canadian person I've heard of.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Go ahead, justin Trudeau. Well you're wrong. The Canadian monarch
- 24:22Speaker 1: we are referring to is also the English monarch, Queen
- 24:26Speaker 1: Elizabeth the Second. Okay, good to know Canada, of course,
- 24:31Speaker 1: once upon a time, being part of the British Empire mark.
- 24:36Speaker 1: A total of three Stanley Cups exists in the world.
- 24:39Speaker 1: One is the Presentation Cup, the one awarded to the
- 24:42Speaker 1: winning team on the ice. There's also a replica Cup
- 24:45Speaker 1: which is used as a stand in when the Presentation
- 24:48Speaker 1: Cup is unavailable, but the original Cup, the one originally
- 24:52Speaker 1: presented by Lord Stanley and used from eight to nine seventy,
- 24:56Speaker 1: is now safely stored in the vault room at the
- 24:59Speaker 1: Hockey Hall of Fame, located in this city, the largest
- 25:02Speaker 1: in Canada. Uh, we're gonna go with Quebec. Wow, the
- 25:09Speaker 1: answers have just fallen off a fucking cliff. First, Danny
- 25:13Speaker 1: Donahue doesn't know about Queen Elizabeth. And now you're going
- 25:16Speaker 1: with Quebec city in Canada. What about Toronto? Oh yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 1: that place exists. The Blue Jays haven't played there in
- 25:25Speaker 1: like two years. That city is not relevant Toronto for
- 25:29Speaker 1: the record. Uh. When I was a big, you know,
- 25:32Speaker 1: big wig headhun show with ESPN, the Stanley Cup came
- 25:35Speaker 1: to ESPN one day and I had invited it into
- 25:39Speaker 1: our morning meeting and the presenter took it out of
- 25:42Speaker 1: the box. It had his gloves on. Uh, he stood
- 25:45Speaker 1: it up on the table. We got to see it
- 25:48Speaker 1: and look at it. And and I will say, even
- 25:50Speaker 1: though I'm not a hockey guy in any way, it
- 25:53Speaker 1: is a sight to behold and it it does give
- 25:55Speaker 1: you butterflies to think about the history of the Stanley Cup.
- 25:58Speaker 1: It is an incredible looking trophy. To look at the
- 26:00Speaker 1: engraved names. It's really, um, it's really something special. When
- 26:04Speaker 1: your true story. I could have I could have saw
- 26:07Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup in person. As a child, I chose
- 26:10Speaker 1: to go see Pocahontas and said, we all make our mistakes.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I was eight. Now I get it, totally get it.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Um Simon, the Stanley Cup. This is your chance to
- 26:20Speaker 1: make it up. The Stanley Cup is just like us.
- 26:22Speaker 1: It's not a perfect There are two famous team names
- 26:26Speaker 1: misspelled on the Cup. One is for the seventy two Bruins,
- 26:30Speaker 1: with the word Boston spelled with queues instead of Oh's.
- 26:34Speaker 1: The second misspelling or You're gonna love This is for
- 26:38Speaker 1: this other East Coast team, the one champions and the
- 26:42Speaker 1: favorite team of your favorite Action Network employee. Thank you
- 26:48Speaker 1: for the lab Chad. The Islanders New York Islanders spelled
- 26:53Speaker 1: on the Stanley Cup Islanders I L L A and
- 26:57Speaker 1: d E R S Danny. Then games of twelve women
- 27:01Speaker 1: appear on the Stanley Cup. The first was Marguerite Norris
- 27:05Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty five, who served as president for this franchise.
- 27:09Speaker 1: The winners of eleven Stanley Cups, the most of any
- 27:13Speaker 1: American team. Gonna go with the Red Wings. The Red
- 27:17Speaker 1: Wings mark you've got some catching up to do. According
- 27:21Speaker 1: to legend in Hive, the Stanley Cup had a rather
- 27:24Speaker 1: wet evening after the winning team drunk on victory and
- 27:28Speaker 1: also alcohol, kicked it into the canal. In this city,
- 27:32Speaker 1: the capital of Canada, they have a now defunct Triple
- 27:36Speaker 1: A baseball franchise Ottawa nothing gets by me except the
- 27:41Speaker 1: largest city in Canada. No, haply not simon. Two young
- 27:46Speaker 1: people have experienced this Christian religious right inside the Stanley Cup.
- 27:51Speaker 1: The most recent was at the request of Red Wings
- 27:54Speaker 1: player Thomas Holmstrom in two thousand eight. Um to get
- 27:59Speaker 1: married with the Stanley Cup. There no religious right. Yeah,
- 28:06Speaker 1: a young person experiences I got this. I forget the
- 28:10Speaker 1: name is the Jewish thing, isn't it? No, it's got
- 28:15Speaker 1: to be uh baptized right, boom baptism bang sigmon. I
- 28:20Speaker 1: should take away a point a for not even knowing
- 28:23Speaker 1: what the Jewish thing could be? Did you are you
- 28:25Speaker 1: thinking like that someone got a brisk they had their
- 28:28Speaker 1: foreskin cut off the Stanley Cup. Yeah, and that's what
- 28:32Speaker 1: I was thinking, like they put they put the foreskin
- 28:33Speaker 1: in the cup. Jesus correct. Could someone get this guy
- 28:37Speaker 1: some fucking mac and cheese? All right, here we go,
- 28:40Speaker 1: here's the prompt. It is hockey tradition that every player
- 28:44Speaker 1: on the Stanley Cup winning team gets one day with
- 28:46Speaker 1: the cup. But winning the Stanley Cup is hard, especially
- 28:49Speaker 1: if you aren't the professional hockey player. So imagine if you,
- 28:52Speaker 1: a regular person, were allowed one day with the Stanley Cup.
- 28:56Speaker 1: What would you do, Danny Europe first, Okay, so you
- 28:59Speaker 1: thought my last answer made me a freak. Just get
- 29:03Speaker 1: ready for this. So I have one day with the cup,
- 29:05Speaker 1: but I assume I have some days beforehand to prepare
- 29:08Speaker 1: for my one day with the cup. So what I'm
- 29:09Speaker 1: gonna do is either buy some apple seeds or some
- 29:13Speaker 1: apple trees in their infancy stage, to find some land
- 29:16Speaker 1: somewhere and set up a row of apple trees. Then
- 29:19Speaker 1: on my day with the cup, I'm filling it up
- 29:21Speaker 1: with water, watering all these trees so that the coming fall,
- 29:24Speaker 1: I have an apple orchard where people can pick apples
- 29:27Speaker 1: that were blessed by Lord Stanley himself. And if you
- 29:30Speaker 1: don't think that this is a cash cow, I think
- 29:32Speaker 1: you're crazy. You know how they like sell the Rosary
- 29:34Speaker 1: beads outside the Vatican blessed by the Pope to these apples.
- 29:38Speaker 1: You can eat them, but they're, you know, blessed by
- 29:40Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup, the Rosary things outside the Vatican. That's
- 29:43Speaker 1: the Jewish thing, right I believe. I believe that's right. Yeah, Danny,
- 29:47Speaker 1: holy shit, you are bringing it next level today. This
- 29:54Speaker 1: is outstanding. Mark. I am always rooting for our guests
- 29:59Speaker 1: because they're taking their time and they're usually uh much
- 30:03Speaker 1: higher profile and bigger and more important than any of
- 30:05Speaker 1: us here at the Action Network. I don't know how
- 30:08Speaker 1: you're gonna beat this, Yeah, I don't. I'm just gonna
- 30:11Speaker 1: lean into like South Carolina just out of college. I'm
- 30:14Speaker 1: going to go on a bar crawl with Lord Stanley's
- 30:16Speaker 1: Cup and we're just gonna fill it with a different
- 30:18Speaker 1: beer from a different bar every single time and just
- 30:20Speaker 1: have a really fun night and hopefully I wake up
- 30:22Speaker 1: with the cup next to me the next day. So, uh,
- 30:25Speaker 1: you're basically gonna do the Alexander Ovechkin. Yes, I'm just
- 30:30Speaker 1: going to get absolutely obliterated while drinking out of the
- 30:33Speaker 1: Stanley Cup. I mean, it's sweet. It's not a cash cow. No,
- 30:37Speaker 1: it's not growing magic. You know, apples, Simon, what do
- 30:42Speaker 1: you got? I'm right there with him. I would take
- 30:44Speaker 1: it to England and just do a pub crawl with it.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Everyone England taking drinks out of the Stanley Cup. Everyone
- 30:49Speaker 1: get a little taste of Lord Stanley in England. I
- 30:51Speaker 1: think that would be pretty cool over there. You'd be
- 30:53Speaker 1: surprised people actually do care about hockey. So I think
- 30:56Speaker 1: it would be cool to bring it over there. Let
- 30:58Speaker 1: me tell you how badly Danny be you guys on that.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Before I even scrolled down to announce what the scorers currently,
- 31:07Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell had already filled in Danny winning that round.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Danny has five, Marquess three, Simon is three. As we
- 31:15Speaker 1: go into the grand finale, Here's the good news plays
- 31:18Speaker 1: right to Mark's strengths because the topic is the home
- 31:23Speaker 1: run derby. First, tell me how much you guys would
- 31:26Speaker 1: like to risk. Each of you close your eyes, hold
- 31:29Speaker 1: up your fingers with your wager amount, Danny you can
- 31:32Speaker 1: do up to five, Mark and signing up to three.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Here we go. One of the most popular parts of
- 31:37Speaker 1: the MLB All Star Break experience is the home run derby,
- 31:41Speaker 1: which has been beloved by fans since. Incredibly, the derby
- 31:45Speaker 1: wasn't nationally broadcast until ESPN aired it in and it
- 31:49Speaker 1: wouldn't be shown live until but that year. In one
- 31:53Speaker 1: of the derby's biggest potential attractions, declined to participate after
- 31:58Speaker 1: ESPN schedule his team to play a late game the
- 32:02Speaker 1: night before, But after please from Hall of famers Joe
- 32:05Speaker 1: Morgan and Frank Robinson, he'd eventually relent and would go
- 32:09Speaker 1: on to win his second home run Derby, and he'd
- 32:13Speaker 1: go on to win the next year too. He's one
- 32:15Speaker 1: of only six Hall of Famers to win a home
- 32:17Speaker 1: run Derby Crown, and remains the only player to win
- 32:20Speaker 1: it three times. You're gonna name this player the Teaker's
- 32:25Speaker 1: part of the past. Mark, please give me your answer
- 32:37Speaker 1: to for the record. You had three points, You've risked
- 32:41Speaker 1: three points. Please give me your answer. I believe it's Ken.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Ken Griffey Jr. Is the right answer. Mark, you now
- 32:49Speaker 1: have six points. You are in the lead. Simon, you
- 32:54Speaker 1: of course went all in. What is your answer? Looks
- 32:57Speaker 1: like we might have some overtime boys, I put in
- 33:00Speaker 1: Griffy Jr. See this is why the game gets exciting.
- 33:03Speaker 1: No matter how big a lead someone has, you get
- 33:05Speaker 1: in the final round and all bets are on. Get it. Danny,
- 33:13Speaker 1: you had five, you risked three. If you get this right,
- 33:17Speaker 1: you're the champion. If not, we are going to overtime.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Sammy says, Oh my god. Miraculously, Mark and Simon are
- 33:30Speaker 1: now tied for first and we have to go to
- 33:33Speaker 1: our overtime answer. Are you ready do it? Matt Mitchell?
- 33:38Speaker 1: Do you want to take us through sudden death. Gentlemen,
- 33:42Speaker 1: welcome back to the Thursday Thunderdome Sudden Death Challenge. Because
- 33:48Speaker 1: we've spent so much time discussing Canada today, here is
- 33:53Speaker 1: your question, classic prices, right rules, closest without going over,
- 33:59Speaker 1: what is the total population of Canada? Simon, you go
- 34:04Speaker 1: first every time. That's that's correct. I don't know Canada. Um,
- 34:11Speaker 1: I'll go with thirty million. Oh man, that's such a
- 34:16Speaker 1: good guest. You're right around where I wanted to go.
- 34:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna got million. The answer is thirty seven point
- 34:24Speaker 1: seven million. Congratulations. Wow. Mark Luino giraffeneck Mark is the
- 34:34Speaker 1: YouTube channel. He is a baseball savants and apparently a
- 34:39Speaker 1: Canadian savant as well. That was incredible, incredible comeback for
