Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Mitch McCann: US Correspondent on the legal action against Donald Trump for his order blocking birthright citizenship
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Mitch McCann is with me now from the US. Mitch,
- 0:03Speaker 1: the birthright citizenship rule seems to be very controversial. I
- 0:08Speaker 1: can see that twenty two states are already suing the
- 0:11Speaker 1: administration over plans to bring this into action.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. Good morning, Francisca from New York. This
- 0:18Speaker 2: is extremely controversial. Donald Trump is trying to end birthright
- 0:22Speaker 2: citizenship here in the United States. So if you are
- 0:24Speaker 2: born in the US at the moment, you automatically get
- 0:27Speaker 2: citizenship and a US passport. That's the way it's been
- 0:30Speaker 2: for a very very long time. Donald Trump is trying
- 0:33Speaker 2: to change that for people that are born with parents
- 0:36Speaker 2: who are here illegally. So he's part of his crackdown
- 0:40Speaker 2: on illegal immigration. Now, twenty two states have sued Donald
- 0:43Speaker 2: Trump saying this is illegal because of the fourteenth Amendment
- 0:47Speaker 2: to the US Constitution that guarantees birthright citizenship. So this
- 0:51Speaker 2: will take effect in about twenty seven twenty eight days
- 0:54Speaker 2: from now, although it probably will be delayed as it's
- 0:58Speaker 2: held up in the course. But this is just one
- 0:59Speaker 2: of many measures Donald Trump has enacted in terms of
- 1:03Speaker 2: illegal immigration. So if we look at some very quickly,
- 1:06Speaker 2: he's declared a border emergency at the southern border. He's
- 1:11Speaker 2: changed laws which mean that ICE agents, this is immigration
- 1:15Speaker 2: enforcement agents can make arrests or conduct raids now in
- 1:19Speaker 2: places like hospitals or churches or schools, whereas previously they
- 1:24Speaker 2: weren't able to do that. And in the last hour,
- 1:26Speaker 2: we have learned that the US Justice Department has ordered
- 1:30Speaker 2: prosecutors around the country to investigate and prosecute law enforcement
- 1:34Speaker 2: officials if they refuse to enforce Donald Trump's new rules.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So they'll be keeping a close eye in all local
- 1:40Speaker 2: police and law enforcement agencies to make sure they're doing
- 1:43Speaker 2: what Donald Trump's telling them to do.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And match just quickly. You got an arctic blast pounding
- 1:49Speaker 1: the stated Francisca.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It's so cold at the moment right now in New
- 1:52Speaker 2: York it is minus eight degrees celsius and it's lunchtime. Yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 2: it's cold, and it's particularly cold for some of these
- 1:59Speaker 2: states that aren't new to the call of weather, places
- 2:01Speaker 2: like Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. More than one hundred
- 2:05Speaker 2: and thirty thousand homes in those states, as well as businesses,
- 2:09Speaker 2: are without power because it's freezing there as well. There
- 2:12Speaker 2: is no escape. The only warm weather, it seems, is
- 2:14Speaker 2: where you are back home.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Thank you so much much, nice to catch up with you.
- 2:18Speaker 1: That was Mitch McCann. For more from Early Edition with
