- 0:00Welcome to unspoken career truths.
- 0:02I'm Cara Wood. And I'm Lauren Levac Gilbert.
- 0:05And we're here to be the Co workers you can trust.
- 0:08In just 10 minutes, we'll cover the strategies you need, the
- 0:11mistakes to avoid, and the insider secrets no one tells you
- 0:15so you can show up with confidence at work.
- 0:18Hey, Cara. Hello.
- 0:21It's EOD and we are recording this episode IRL so that we can
- 0:26laugh about it together. And if anyone can guess today?
- 0:30FTW. Today's podcast is about
- 0:35acronyms and we're calling it acronym soup, so get ready.
- 0:41There's gonna be a lot of three letter words, a lot of acronyms.
- 0:44This might be more of like an acronym therapy session and a
- 0:47corporate speak therapy session. Now, when I was prepping for
- 0:52this podcast, I tried to write a paragraph that sounded and
- 0:58mimics what we're going to talk about.
- 1:00So bear with me here. Ready.
- 1:01Yeah. Let me know if this sounds
- 1:03familiar at all. Ever.
- 1:05Let's circle back to align EOD. Our OK Rs and KPIs need to
- 1:10ladder up to the FY25 strategic priorities.
- 1:13So let's ensure cross functional alignment between GTMR and D and
- 1:17CX. If we can sync with the PM and
- 1:19get sign up from the SLT before the QBR, we'll be in a good spot
- 1:23to drive ROI across all SKU's. Please make sure the CRM and PIM
- 1:27are fully integrated into the tech stack to optimize UX and
- 1:30reduce TTVTLDR. Let's keep the comms tight, stay
- 1:34agile and deliver MVP by close of business Friday.
- 1:38You know what the I For a second I stumbled over TTV and then I
- 1:42realized it's time to value yes. It was really fun doing this one
- 1:49because I was like, how many acronyms in corporate speak
- 1:51words can you shove into a paragraph?
- 1:53I wish that I had a bingo card for that because I feel like you
- 1:57use so many classic ones that oh.
- 1:59My gosh, we should do that for Christmas.
- 2:01An acronym bingo card for corporate America.
- 2:06Totally. Stay tuned, that might be
- 2:08coming. So here's the truth.
- 2:11I mean, half the time people actually know what most acronyms
- 2:14are or saying or what they're saying or what they mean or
- 2:18honestly, a lot of people are too afraid to ask.
- 2:21I don't know if you feel that way, Cara.
- 2:23I actually used to give advice to my interns to keep a notebook
- 2:28with them and write down all the acronyms that confuse them at
- 2:31the start of something. But I also think there's almost
- 2:35like 3 tiers of acronyms. There is the acronyms, a lot of
- 2:38which you used, which were, well, you used a mix.
- 2:41I would say you used two kinds. One, the kind that you hear a
- 2:46lot kind of no matter what industry you might be in, like
- 2:50EOD, end of day, COB, close of business.
- 2:53Those are office acronyms, but they're an MVP, most valuable,
- 2:58you know, sorry, that's minimum viable product in the product
- 3:04world I was gonna see, but someone in the sports world
- 3:06would hear MVP and think Most Valuable Player, which I started
- 3:09to say TLDR. That's one that the whole entire
- 3:13Internet knows. But then there were others that
- 3:15you use that were very, very industry specific, which I think
- 3:18is like a second tier of acronym, just CRM or PIM.
- 3:23But then there's also an acronym that is sort of my least
- 3:28favorite or the ones that I would really flag, which are
- 3:30acronyms that are company specific.
- 3:33And that's like to a company culture, they make sense and
- 3:36nowhere else. And that's where I think it gets
- 3:39even trickier. I love it.
- 3:41And like if you use too many and your writing or your
- 3:45conversation becomes like about synergy and agility and all
- 3:50these things, like it actually discounts what you're saying
- 3:52because people just hear all the buzzwords.
- 3:55So try to use them in the appropriate way.
- 3:57But there definitely is a place and a value for them.
- 4:00Well, and I actually, I'm glad you brought that up because I
- 4:02think there actually is real value in having, in knowing
- 4:06these acronyms. Like you said, you kind of have
- 4:08to know what they mean. So if you don't and you're
- 4:10hearing them, write them down. Ask someone once you have a
- 4:13moment. I've definitely joined companies
- 4:15that just have different ways to measure, like you had OK,
- 4:18RSKPIS, MVPS, all SKU's, all in here.
- 4:24That's different ways that you might structure or measure your
- 4:26company and different companies will use different ones or
- 4:29they'll use a combination. So those are things that are
- 4:31actually OK to ask about. And I actually use acronyms a
- 4:35lot when I'm trying to signal that I know in industry.
- 4:39So it's a way to kind of say to someone like, yeah, I have
- 4:43worked in that space before. You know, like when I say
- 4:46something like, I helped Ehrs be HIPAA compliant when the ACA
- 4:53passed. Like, you know, I worked in
- 4:54healthcare. You.
- 4:55Know what you're talking about? Right.
- 4:58And though I do think it's kind of helpful.
- 5:02I think that's a great point. I think it does demonstrate
- 5:05understanding of an industry. I also love your point, and it's
- 5:07the next thing I was gonna talk about.
- 5:09Don't be afraid to ask, even if it might be obvious to everybody
- 5:13else. Like ask what the acronym is.
- 5:15If you started a new job, There might be some that are specific
- 5:19to the company. There might be some that are
- 5:21specific to the industry. I actually really respect
- 5:24especially people in like a senior leadership role who stop
- 5:28you and say, hey, can you just clarify by what what you mean by
- 5:31that? It's OK.
- 5:32Like, it doesn't mean that you're stupid.
- 5:35It doesn't mean that you don't know something.
- 5:38Like you're just asking a clarifying question.
- 5:41And that's totally fine. So like feel empowered to be
- 5:45able to ask the question and also like have empathy for
- 5:50others around you that are either new or are starting in
- 5:53the industry or if you're talking to someone who's not in
- 5:55the industry. A lot of times when I'm speaking
- 5:58on podcasts in my industry, I always try to explain the
- 6:01acronym. It's kind of always ingrained in
- 6:03my head. Like if I say the three letters,
- 6:06I immediately afterwards explain it.
- 6:08So also just try to keep that in mind so that you can bring
- 6:10everyone else along with you. Yeah, it's funny.
- 6:14There's another kind of cool thing I was thinking about
- 6:17knowing this topic was coming up around acronyms.
- 6:19And that's when you also get some that are like almost too
- 6:24clever or like forced. And I have two examples actually
- 6:29that I want to get your, like, take on.
- 6:31One is when I worked for a large company and they decided to use
- 6:36their values as an acronym. So we always had like an eye
- 6:40care and care spelled out values.
- 6:44I could not tell you what those values are.
- 6:47However, it still worked really well because you hear the phrase
- 6:52I care and you're still like you're paying attention.
- 6:55You're, you know, customer focused, you're responsible.
- 6:59I don't know, maybe those are, maybe it was responsible and
- 7:01customer focused. Maybe it wasn't.
- 7:04Doesn't matter because they use the word care in the acronym.
- 7:07This sort of worked even if you didn't remember the four words,
- 7:11which I admittedly do not. Stop trying to make fetch happen
- 7:15there Cara. That's my Mean Girls quote for
- 7:17the day. Exactly.
- 7:21And then the other one was actually from this past weekend.
- 7:25I went to a really great talk, Allison Woods Brooks, who wrote
- 7:31a book. She's a conversation expert
- 7:34linguist and she wrote a book and she used the acronym talk
- 7:39TALK. So I got really upset when she
- 7:44started walking through the and I recommend the book.
- 7:46I recommend her research really interesting talk and you can
- 7:49decide Lauren, if you think this is a valuable way to do it.
- 7:52But her book again uses an acronym for 4T ALK 4 things you
- 7:59should do with talk. I'm just going to throw it out
- 8:01there. What do you think L stands for
- 8:02in Conversation? I was going to say level
- 8:06learning. Level learning.
- 8:09I like it. I thought.
- 8:10Listen right away. Yeah, that's a good one.
- 8:14It's Levity and she's. Good.
- 8:17Though that's a great one. It's a great one.
- 8:19I remember all all four. And I mean, I did just see it
- 8:21this past weekend. It's topics asking, levity and
- 8:26kindness listening that actually.
- 8:28Fits really great though for when you're giving a talk.
- 8:31Totally. It totally fits really great.
- 8:33And it's not for when you're giving a talk, it's when you're
- 8:35in conversation with people. So all the things you should do
- 8:38when you're talking to people back and forth.
- 8:40But it really threw me until then, the like oddness of it,
- 8:45like not hearing what I expected to hear made me remember it.
- 8:48And so I think it's really interesting when again,
- 8:51sometimes you're learning things.
- 8:52There's like alphabet soup, there's a million new things to
- 8:55learn. And other times, it's actually a
- 8:56way to connect with people, make something memorable.
- 9:00You know acronyms can work both ways.
- 9:02I completely agree. I think acronyms and corporate
- 9:04phrases, they're there for a reason, to keep everyone on the
- 9:07same page, which I feel like in and of itself is some corporate
- 9:10speak to make sure that you can write things clearly, people
- 9:14understand what you're saying. It can be hard for people to
- 9:17keep up those. So just try to explain your
- 9:20acronyms. Don't feel dumb if you don't
- 9:22know them. Ask for clarification and just
- 9:25try not to fall into the corporate speak trap or the
- 9:28acronym TRAP. That's a wrap.
