- 0:00Speaker 1: You know, this is Jake from Polaris you to talk
- 0:01Speaker 1: about Froth and Fury.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, good morning, Jake. Are you here today, brother? Yeah?
- 0:07Speaker 1: Good, Thank you mate, thanks so much, thanks for having
- 0:09Speaker 1: me my pleasures.
- 0:10Speaker 3: So we are here indeed to talk about Froth and
- 0:13Speaker 3: Fury Festival twenty twenty six, where Polaris are headlining next
- 0:17Speaker 3: year on January twenty fourth and berth and January the
- 0:20Speaker 3: thirty first in Adelaide. So personally, congratulations, bro, it's a big,
- 0:23Speaker 3: big achievement.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Thank you so much, really appreciate it.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:27Speaker 4: No, we're absolutely stoked to be headlining the fests. Just
- 0:30Speaker 4: to be at the stage, to be doing anything like
- 0:33Speaker 4: that at this point.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Is really awesome for us. So yeah, very very excited.
- 0:37Speaker 3: And it's probably one of the most diverse festivals doing
- 0:39Speaker 3: the round of them made and you got yourselves. There's
- 0:41Speaker 3: Soul Flight and album Comeback Kid, friends of Rum leg Wagon,
- 0:45Speaker 3: like Travels, all the spectrums from punt through to metal,
- 0:48Speaker 3: so flying offsore, do your favorite ones with more likeful
- 0:52Speaker 3: like bands.
- 0:53Speaker 4: No, I look, I grew up going to sound waves,
- 0:55Speaker 4: so that was all about hitting all of your kind
- 0:58Speaker 4: of niches and the diversities of the kinds of kinds
- 1:01Speaker 4: of different corners of the genre. You know, I'd go
- 1:04Speaker 4: and see bands that I wouldn't normally have been exposed
- 1:08Speaker 4: to just being in my own circles and listening to
- 1:10Speaker 4: what I was listening to at the time. So I'm
- 1:12Speaker 4: always really into a mixed bill, mixed lineup. You just
- 1:15Speaker 4: get to see some stuff that you wouldn't normally see,
- 1:17Speaker 4: and it's always really exciting to see what people are like,
- 1:21Speaker 4: you know, what the chatter is about which band and
- 1:23Speaker 4: who people want to go watch and stuff like that.
- 1:25Speaker 1: So yeah, we're we're collectively big fans of it.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And of course.
- 1:30Speaker 3: It's stuck with Ossie fans as well on the line
- 1:32Speaker 3: up too, like to say, you got yourselves as Asian
- 1:34Speaker 3: Sleeper Friends are Ryn Private Function, Sleep and Zuko, Like
- 1:38Speaker 3: it's great to see a festival that puts so many
- 1:40Speaker 3: local bands on the bill instead of just having a
- 1:42Speaker 3: couple of taken representatives there.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Yeah, totally, Yeah, especially greats like Friends with Roum as well,
- 1:47Speaker 4: Like yeah, it's it's I mean, you know, that's again,
- 1:52Speaker 4: I grew up going to different fests at home, and
- 1:55Speaker 4: you know, it was always just exciting to see from
- 1:58Speaker 4: the local you know, up than comers to the homegrown
- 2:01Speaker 4: heroes playing on the stages alongside all those different acts.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So yeah, it's awesome to see that representation.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So someone within the music industry, I guess its achieved
- 2:10Speaker 3: success so far. Bro Like, how important are opportunities like
- 2:14Speaker 3: this for Australian bands and what can they take out,
- 2:17Speaker 3: like the emerging bands in particular, what can they take
- 2:19Speaker 3: out of something like this.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Well, I think that it does just help to.
- 2:25Speaker 4: I guess being here in Australia, were so separated from
- 2:27Speaker 4: the world, and there's kind of almost like this illustriousness
- 2:29Speaker 4: to some of the bands that do come over here
- 2:31Speaker 4: and play shows. Getting to see some of our bands
- 2:35Speaker 4: rub shoulders with them, regardless of what level the band
- 2:38Speaker 4: is themselves, kind of helps to put the image of
- 2:41Speaker 4: that band in a similar.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Kind of place in your mind, especially as a young
- 2:45Speaker 1: audience goer.
- 2:46Speaker 4: I remember when we were younger, pinnacle of what we
- 2:48Speaker 4: could just to go back to Soweth again was always
- 2:50Speaker 4: we just wanted to desperately play that first of all,
- 2:52Speaker 4: and you know, sadly it's not with us anymore. But
- 2:55Speaker 4: you know, every time we get to do something here
- 2:57Speaker 4: at home, I am always reminding myself of what it
- 3:00Speaker 4: look like to see those local bands, to see to
- 3:02Speaker 4: see the local the homegrown.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Heroes and stuff like that.
- 3:08Speaker 4: And yeah, I guess to the bands that have been
- 3:11Speaker 4: playing it, Yeah, I mean just just enjoying festivals is
- 3:15Speaker 4: the best part about playing them really, like, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 4: getting to take in everything that's going on, all the
- 3:20Speaker 4: different acts and all of the air of excitement, so
- 3:23Speaker 4: different from a normal show, like being open air and
- 3:26Speaker 4: having so much going on. So yeah, just always a
- 3:28Speaker 4: bit of fun and it's just good to enjoy.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Brother Fiery started life during the COVID Heyere in twenty
- 3:34Speaker 3: twenty one at parate Like Brewery and it's grown this
- 3:36Speaker 3: year to Perth.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Then for the first time it's making its home in Adelaide.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Made so usually the big ones in Brisbane, Sydney, in
- 3:43Speaker 3: Melbourne to get all the funline is, so it's good
- 3:44Speaker 3: to see Perth and Adelaide actually getting a run.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I think that is really cool as well.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Yeah, because they do get put out of fair bit
- 3:51Speaker 4: and I think that this is more catered and tailored
- 3:53Speaker 4: to them and that's kind of really special. And I
- 3:55Speaker 4: wouldn't doubt that you'd probably start getting people traveling from
- 3:58Speaker 4: into state to go to the shows as well, which
- 4:01Speaker 4: is probably a nice change for perfon Adelaide definitely.
- 4:04Speaker 1: So yeah, it is. It is really great to see
- 4:06Speaker 1: and where we're beyond Stoke to be a part of it.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And I think it's also a great idea to spread
- 4:11Speaker 3: it over two weekends, so instead of jamming it both
- 4:14Speaker 3: in the one weekend, you know, like I think that's
- 4:16Speaker 3: where other festivals have failed, trying to take things over
- 4:18Speaker 3: to and Adelaide like back it up too quick the.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Next day and thinks it just got too much for them.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Well, Perth's like a different country, isn't it. You know,
- 4:28Speaker 4: you fly, you're flying quite a bit in the end.
- 4:30Speaker 4: There's a bit of a time zone difference, and it
- 4:32Speaker 4: actually between shodos can be quite hectic when you're trying
- 4:36Speaker 4: to get from per to Adelaide or Adelaide to Perth
- 4:38Speaker 4: for a back to back show on any festival or
- 4:42Speaker 4: tour run, it's depending on the time zones, which it
- 4:45Speaker 4: can really tack it out of you.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So it is.
- 4:47Speaker 4: It is a clever thing and I think it's also
- 4:49Speaker 4: just nice for everybody to be able to have that
- 4:51Speaker 4: for all of the international acts to be able to
- 4:52Speaker 4: have about a week in Australia to enjoy themselves as well,
- 4:55Speaker 4: So I guess it kind of works out for everybody.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, man, so out of all these bad we
- 5:00Speaker 3: lifted them off before. There's so many of them. May
- 5:02Speaker 3: who are you most looking forward to see it and
- 5:04Speaker 3: playing with?
- 5:06Speaker 1: Probably friends are wrong?
- 5:08Speaker 4: Yeah, no, yeah, always always good fun, totally iconic, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 4: it's just it's that's that's just the Australian love there.
- 5:17Speaker 4: And you know, another up and coming band that I
- 5:22Speaker 4: haven't been lucky enough to see yet would be Ocean Sleeper,
- 5:24Speaker 4: So I'm looking forward to seeing those guys as well.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Like, do you guys go to festivals like this
- 5:29Speaker 3: for the whole day and see other bands or do
- 5:30Speaker 3: you just prefer to arrive place to you said, and
- 5:32Speaker 3: get on with business.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Well usually though the whole day, I guess. You know,
- 5:37Speaker 4: in the past, we've only well we've only really been
- 5:41Speaker 4: lucky enough to don't forget anyone. But I'm pretty sure
- 5:44Speaker 4: that night and Day was the first and only time
- 5:45Speaker 4: so far we've really headlined a festival here in Australia.
- 5:48Speaker 4: That was amazing and we just we hung out the
- 5:50Speaker 4: whole two days. You know, we were there just seeing
- 5:52Speaker 4: bands playing our set. You know, it's it's it's a
- 5:56Speaker 4: tricky balance, particularly for myself and Jamie Good look after
- 6:01Speaker 4: our voices, not be running around chatter boxing too much
- 6:04Speaker 4: and trying everything out and just exhausting ourselves. But even
- 6:09Speaker 4: just being on the grounds are just kind of even
- 6:13Speaker 4: just sometimes backstage, hanging out just with some of your
- 6:16Speaker 4: some of your team and just taking it easy. It's
- 6:18Speaker 4: always nice just to be in the presence and just
- 6:20Speaker 4: to feel the air of everything that's going on.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I spoke before that festivals are this are great because
- 6:26Speaker 3: you get a chance to see bends you might not
- 6:28Speaker 3: have heard of before. So just say someone has come
- 6:30Speaker 3: along and they haven't heard much of Polower, It's like,
- 6:32Speaker 3: what three songs of yours should they listen to?
- 6:34Speaker 2: You get ready for your life there?
- 6:36Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, well I should probably try to pick something
- 6:40Speaker 4: from each record and get a bit of diversity going there.
- 6:44Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:44Speaker 4: From the newest record, I'd say Nightmare is maybe one
- 6:50Speaker 4: of the better known songs it's done in the world.
- 6:53Speaker 4: For us, we personally love playing it a lot, and
- 6:56Speaker 4: the crowd seems to really get into that.
- 6:58Speaker 1: One which is exciting Masochist is a bit of a
- 7:04Speaker 1: different kind.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Of vibe, more of a gain on the shoulders, crowd surf, chant,
- 7:10Speaker 4: the lyrics, and then from that first record, the remedy
- 7:14Speaker 4: still seems to be a burner.
- 7:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:16Speaker 4: We put that song out now the end of twenty seventeen,
- 7:22Speaker 4: and yeah, it hasn't left our sets since, you know,
- 7:26Speaker 4: so we love playing it and seems like crowds still
- 7:29Speaker 4: love to hear it. So yeah, those are three songs
- 7:32Speaker 4: from the across the eras for you.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Nice now pillars of all nine all over the world
- 7:37Speaker 3: for your electrifying live shows made. But how much planning
- 7:41Speaker 3: and practice goes into what we see up there for
- 7:43Speaker 3: an hour or so on stage.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Well, it's very dependent on what we're able to put
- 7:48Speaker 4: in at the time. We always try to make sure
- 7:49Speaker 4: that we get as much practice as we can get in,
- 7:52Speaker 4: but we also regiment. We've got you know, like production
- 7:56Speaker 4: days that we put on, so that's when we'll hire
- 7:57Speaker 4: out of space, get the team to get word of
- 8:00Speaker 4: this from you know, Lance our soundguard, to Calum doing lights.
- 8:06Speaker 1: To you know, basically a show rehearsal of thoughts. We
- 8:08Speaker 1: might do that for a couple.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Of days, make sure everything gear wise is all up
- 8:12Speaker 4: to speed, everything's all running properly as it should.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Make sure everybody that's working.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Stage was that with us, knows how the set's going
- 8:19Speaker 4: to run, any queues and things like that, if there
- 8:21Speaker 4: is any additional production, making sure that we all know
- 8:24Speaker 4: when not to be at the front of the stage
- 8:25Speaker 4: when the piro goes off, and we'll just try to
- 8:29Speaker 4: you know, you do eventually have situations where you're running
- 8:32Speaker 4: out of maybe an overseas tour and you don't get
- 8:35Speaker 4: as much time as you'd like, and we tend to
- 8:38Speaker 4: just have to remind ourselves, hey, we've done this before.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Just you know, do what you normally do and don't
- 8:43Speaker 1: overthink it.
- 8:44Speaker 4: But whenever we can, we prefer to have a bit
- 8:46Speaker 4: of preparation, not just for ourselves, but to make sure
- 8:48Speaker 4: that the team is up to speed on everything. And yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 4: it's always good to go out and play a show
- 8:54Speaker 4: to a crowd and feel like you've got that show
- 8:56Speaker 4: now before you even get out on the stage.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Think, guys will be pretty busy.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Since the release of your last album, Fatalism, we've pretty
- 9:03Speaker 3: much played all over the world, right, so how of
- 9:05Speaker 3: the shows, like how the overseas people accept you guys.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It's been amazing. Yeah, that record has done what the last.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Two have done for us, which is essentially exceeded our expectations.
- 9:21Speaker 4: We always put all that we can into album writing,
- 9:24Speaker 4: but you know, it's always it's always another gamble every
- 9:27Speaker 4: time you put out a record. Will the fans appreciate it?
- 9:30Speaker 4: Will they like it as much as the last one?
- 9:32Speaker 4: Are we doing more? Are we doing something different? Are
- 9:34Speaker 4: we writing songs that we're excited to play? And luckily
- 9:38Speaker 4: so far, every time we put out a record, we're
- 9:40Speaker 4: often trying our best to play as many of the
- 9:42Speaker 4: new track as we can while balancing out the set
- 9:44Speaker 4: with some of the older ones, because we tend to
- 9:46Speaker 4: get excited by playing these new songs.
- 9:48Speaker 1: That we have written.
- 9:50Speaker 4: You know, we've had an amazing time over in the
- 9:52Speaker 4: States recently, and in particular, Europe has just been completely
- 9:55Speaker 4: unreal for us. We had an amazing support tool last
- 9:58Speaker 4: year with birtwith which is quite in Birring.
- 10:01Speaker 1: He'd been lucky enough to do a lot of headlining recently.
- 10:04Speaker 4: And he's unbelievable and he's not just a great guy,
- 10:09Speaker 4: but he's really has that performers kind of say aura
- 10:15Speaker 4: to him.
- 10:16Speaker 1: He loves what he does.
- 10:18Speaker 4: I don't think he's the kind of guy that it
- 10:20Speaker 4: bothered doing it if he didn't love it quite as
- 10:22Speaker 4: much as he does, and it's quite contagious to see.
- 10:26Speaker 4: We felt quite inspired watching those guys and actually took
- 10:31Speaker 4: from our experiences watching their show and implemented a few
- 10:36Speaker 4: of our own fresh ideas into the not Fest sets
- 10:38Speaker 4: that we played at the beginning of this year, and
- 10:40Speaker 4: that was really fun because it just kind of added
- 10:42Speaker 4: a bit of excitement to us. We threw a few
- 10:45Speaker 4: different kind of production ideas and little elemental changes.
- 10:48Speaker 1: To the songs.
- 10:50Speaker 4: So it is always just really great to get to
- 10:52Speaker 4: do those kinds of supports where you do get to
- 10:54Speaker 4: see another band that's been doing it for a bit
- 10:56Speaker 4: longer and just kind of be in awe of that
- 10:58Speaker 4: and want to kind.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Of up your own on performance as well. I think most.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Recently we were really lucky to do a European festival run.
- 11:06Speaker 4: We played some of the festivals that we've been watching
- 11:10Speaker 4: footage of on YouTube since we were young guys, in
- 11:12Speaker 4: particularly the the m Park and im Ring. Might actually
- 11:17Speaker 4: have that backwards now that I say it, but those shows.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Were completely unbelievable for us.
- 11:24Speaker 4: We got there and saw the stages in the space
- 11:27Speaker 4: and kind of talk to ourselves, oh shit, you know,
- 11:31Speaker 4: there's just so much space.
- 11:32Speaker 1: We'll be lucky to even have a quarter of this field.
- 11:34Speaker 4: And you know, when we got out on the stage,
- 11:37Speaker 4: I could we could just see people as far back
- 11:39Speaker 4: as it would go. So many people turned out to
- 11:40Speaker 4: see us. We were so grateful. But more than that,
- 11:43Speaker 4: we felt like we really put on shows that we
- 11:45Speaker 4: were really proud of, shows that we hoped and felt
- 11:48Speaker 4: measured up to the prestige of what we were doing there.
- 11:52Speaker 4: And you know, we walked off stage after those sets
- 11:55Speaker 4: were just the biggest grins on our faces, feeling like
- 11:58Speaker 4: we'd really just done something that it's kind of been
- 12:00Speaker 4: in the making since we were just young guys just
- 12:02Speaker 4: learning instruments and putting together the concept of a band.
- 12:05Speaker 4: So that was that was particularly special for.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Us this year.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Good Well deserved you, my friend.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 12:13Speaker 3: So speaking of fatalism, can I ask if you've started
- 12:15Speaker 3: work on the follow up ye or your busy tour.
- 12:18Speaker 1: We are, we are right into it.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Actually, we writing sometimes takes this a little bit to
- 12:25Speaker 4: get stuck into and we were quite busy with touring
- 12:30Speaker 4: the last record, but we are well underway with this
- 12:33Speaker 4: new one, actually making some really good progress.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I was actually just doing a bit of writing with Rick.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Now we do a bit of online work for.
- 12:39Speaker 4: These days, so we'll hop on discord share links online
- 12:44Speaker 4: that let's us listen to what each other are working on,
- 12:47Speaker 4: and we're actually finishing off a song at the moment
- 12:49Speaker 4: that we're really excited about.
- 12:51Speaker 1: And then on Sunday we'll be going away. We actually
- 12:56Speaker 1: like to book ourselves airv and bs just around New
- 12:58Speaker 1: South Wales and go away for a week's time.
- 13:01Speaker 4: And so while we'll do online writing in between, we
- 13:04Speaker 4: love to get you know, in a house together, in
- 13:06Speaker 4: a room together, work for a solid week and we'll
- 13:09Speaker 4: be up in the mornings and work through the evenings,
- 13:11Speaker 4: and yeah, that's sometimes when we get the bulk of
- 13:14Speaker 4: our work done. And it's really handy because these days,
- 13:17Speaker 4: with our busier lifestyle, busier lives, and we don't all
- 13:21Speaker 4: live as close to each other as we used to,
- 13:23Speaker 4: it is good to just have that mandated time where
- 13:25Speaker 4: we can go away and just prodly focus on that
- 13:28Speaker 4: sort of stuff and make some real good progress there.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So, yeah, we were well in the thick of it
- 13:32Speaker 1: at the moment.
- 13:33Speaker 3: And what sort of direction has it taken? Is it
- 13:35Speaker 3: what fans would expect or are you guys going to
- 13:37Speaker 3: throw a few curveballs in?
- 13:39Speaker 1: Well, I'd like to think that there's at least one
- 13:41Speaker 1: or two curveballs per album. We always we always try
- 13:47Speaker 1: to move outwards as opposed to any one direction.
- 13:50Speaker 4: You know, we've got our course down, but we've always
- 13:52Speaker 4: in every record we're always looking to write something heavier
- 13:54Speaker 4: than we've written previously. We tend to write something that
- 13:59Speaker 4: goes down them a lot of clients, sometimes more than
- 14:01Speaker 4: we have in the.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Past as well. I'd say that our core sound is
- 14:05Speaker 1: made up of a.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Few different aspects, and on the last record, I think
- 14:10Speaker 4: we deliberately based on the experiences we're going through at
- 14:15Speaker 4: the time and based on just how everything felt during
- 14:17Speaker 4: the lockdown period which Fatalism was written during, we kind
- 14:21Speaker 4: of leaned into a slightly gloomier, slightly darker, heavier kind
- 14:25Speaker 4: of vibe and maybe two Degree somewhat neglected some of
- 14:29Speaker 4: our more melodic aspects. And I don't just mean that
- 14:32Speaker 4: by clean vocals and singing, but just within the instruments themselves.
- 14:36Speaker 4: And so there was a lot of songs that got
- 14:38Speaker 4: written at that period that we left and didn't necessarily
- 14:43Speaker 4: work on for the album in particular. And it's been
- 14:45Speaker 4: also to come back to those and to realize how
- 14:47Speaker 4: excited we were to put those together into different songs.
- 14:51Speaker 1: But yeah, I think.
- 14:54Speaker 4: There's a lot that we want to say on this album.
- 14:56Speaker 4: It's got a lot of what you would expect from
- 14:59Speaker 4: us in terms.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Of melancholy melody. We you know, we're always.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Trying to find new ways to do this, different things
- 15:08Speaker 4: that we personally enjoy in our sound. But yeah, it's
- 15:14Speaker 4: it's just been, it's just been maybe one of the
- 15:18Speaker 4: it's the first record I feel like that things have
- 15:20Speaker 4: really just felt fall into place quite quickly. We quite
- 15:23Speaker 4: we often beat ourselves up when we're making records, and
- 15:26Speaker 4: this one has been painful at times, but it does
- 15:29Speaker 4: seem to be coming together in a way that none
- 15:31Speaker 4: of the other ones had before. And I think that
- 15:33Speaker 4: we're just as excited, if not more excited for this
- 15:36Speaker 4: one than we have been.
- 15:37Speaker 1: About the others.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Yeah, we're getting we're getting quite far along with it now,
