- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So I have these seeds that I want to plant and it is for
- 0:34butterfly peas and they are vines.
- 0:38They are annuals where I am and they are abundant.
- 0:43They're beautiful. But here's the cool thing, you
- 0:45can make tea with them, which is exactly the thing I want to do.
- 0:48I want to make tea with them. So here I am.
- 0:52I get the seeds and I mean, I plant a lot of kinds of seeds
- 0:56over the years and there's always tricks with each seed.
- 1:00Each seed has its own little specific needs.
- 1:03Sometimes you have to put some in the freezer to make them come
- 1:06up. Literally you put seeds in the
- 1:07freezer and then when you for at least, you know, a month and
- 1:11then you take them out and then guess what?
- 1:13Lo and behold, it kicks them into gear and says, hey, it was
- 1:16cold, now you should sprout because there's all this coating
- 1:21in them that we don't understand because to us it looks like
- 1:24inert material, but it's not inert material.
- 1:26It's alive. And so these triggers, they have
- 1:29these little triggers that tell them it's time to grow.
- 1:32So I want to grow butterfly peas and they're beautiful vines.
- 1:37They climb, they're very bushy. They can go for the whole, they
- 1:41can deal with these hot summers and they love to just have the
- 1:45heat and humidity. So it's ideal.
- 1:47So I'm just getting, I just found out about them recently.
- 1:51I've not seen them before, but I was looking for something that I
- 1:54could put along the edges of the chicken coop run so that I could
- 1:58have flowers out there because it's in my distance and I want
- 2:01to be able to see that. And lo and behold, butterfly
- 2:05peas also make great tea. So you can have butterfly PT.
- 2:09And I was like, oh, this sounds so cool.
- 2:12And they're really electric colors.
- 2:13They're like right up my alley. They're purple and blue and Aqua
- 2:17and they've got just this stunning color.
- 2:20And I get thinking, Oh my gosh, of course I want to make this
- 2:23and of course I want this tea. So I get the seeds sent in to me
- 2:28and here the the coolest part is you can have them, they, they
- 2:33grow profusely. Like once they start growing,
- 2:36they are fast growers. So I'm very excited about that.
- 2:39But getting them to grow is tricky.
- 2:42So I as I before I even order them, I'm reading the reviews
- 2:46and some people are like, Oh, I can't get them to sprout.
- 2:48Other people are like, I got mine to sprout right away.
- 2:51So I start doing research on what is the deal with this seed
- 2:54because there it was just too weird how some people could get
- 2:59it to happen and some people just couldn't get it to happen.
- 3:01So I'm looking and you have to do this process called
- 3:04scarification, which I've never had to do with seeds before.
- 3:08I've frozen them, I've soaked them.
- 3:10I've done little things that set the triggers off in the seed
- 3:14because you know, you got to do these things to make sure that
- 3:17they know it's time to grow. And here you are, you got one
- 3:21that has a new version of it, scarification.
- 3:23So it's it, it's really just think of it like the root word.
- 3:26You have to scar them. Something has to happen to them
- 3:29in order to get them to crack because that outer shell is so
- 3:33hard, it protects all the good stuff inside.
- 3:37So it's something has to happen. So you have to either use a nail
- 3:41file, sandpaper or an actual metal file and scar it till you
- 3:47see that lighter color inside so that the seed knows it's time to
- 3:52grow. So here I am thinking to myself,
- 3:54well this is insane because what what happens in nature?
- 3:57How do they even do this in nature?
- 3:58But it can happen also through if a bird eats a seed and it
- 4:03goes through the digestive system, then the acids in the
- 4:06digestive system will cause the scarification and then the bird
- 4:10poops it out and now it's fertilized and boom, you have it
- 4:12growing somewhere. But either way, I have to go
- 4:16through this process and do it. And it just really got me
- 4:19thinking about how we all need to do those things to make sure
- 4:23we're growing in the proper way as well.
- 4:26So it's so fascinating when you get something new and you're
- 4:29trying it. So today is going to be a day
- 4:32where I sit and metal file a bunch of these to because I'm
- 4:36going to go the metal file route.
- 4:38I pretty much decided that and I'm also going to test it by
- 4:41soaking them. I'm going to do a blind test by
- 4:43soaking looking half of them as well as doing the scarification.
- 4:48So I'm going to scar them and then I am going to put them in
- 4:53water to see if they'll grow it quicker.
- 4:56And this may seem all insane like why go through all this?
- 4:59But it to me this is just a process of a self development
- 5:03growth as well. Because here you are looking at
- 5:06all these seeds and you're like, wow, I have to actually scar
- 5:09them to make them grow. Where else does this show up in
- 5:13our life? So I find it fascinating.
- 5:15I'm going to try different things and I'll keep you posted
- 5:18because I'm going to be wanting to drink some really Aqua,
- 5:22purple, blue-green tea and I'm going to be really excited about
- 5:25it. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:27you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 5:29Bye.
