- 0:34Speaker 1: One of our biggest guests we've ever had, no question
- 0:36Speaker 1: about it, maybe the biggest.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Although Dale earn Hard Junior, that was a big one. Yeah,
- 0:40Speaker 3: that's a big one. But Peyton Manning, welcome to Busting
- 0:44Speaker 3: with the Boys.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Thank you all for having me. Yeah, appreciate that. Honored,
- 0:48Speaker 4: very honored.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Just kick us off.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Brother walking in this room, Like, honestly, it's a rhetorical question,
- 0:55Speaker 3: but I'm gonna ask it anyway. Did you ever think
- 0:58Speaker 3: that you would leave a legacy like this because like
- 1:00Speaker 3: you come from a football family, like you're growing up.
- 1:02Speaker 3: You have all the footage where you're playing in the backyard.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Stuff they like when I'm young and I'm watching you
- 1:07Speaker 3: get you and your brother get talked about an archie
- 1:09Speaker 3: to where you see all the footage and you just
- 1:11Speaker 3: know that little kid in you that loves the game
- 1:12Speaker 3: so much and making such an impact that you've made
- 1:16Speaker 3: on this game, Like do you ever just sit there
- 1:17Speaker 3: and try to take a moment to take it in.
- 1:20Speaker 4: I'm very grateful and honored for the teams and organizations
- 1:25Speaker 4: that I was a part of, but I cherished my
- 1:27Speaker 4: four years here at Tennessee. And no, I mean, you
- 1:30Speaker 4: have no idea that you're going to have this connection
- 1:34Speaker 4: and relationship with the university thirty years after I came
- 1:39Speaker 4: here back in nineteen ninety four. But I love coming back.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I stayed four years in college. Will I think people
- 1:46Speaker 4: here in Noxvill and Tennessee probably remember that more than
- 1:49Speaker 4: anything more than a throw or a touchdown, that I
- 1:52Speaker 4: turned the NFL down for a year to stay one
- 1:55Speaker 4: more year in college, which spoke a lot about how
- 1:59Speaker 4: much I'll loved the university in the whole school, in
- 2:02Speaker 4: the whole place in order to stay here. So it's
- 2:04Speaker 4: fun to come back. I love coming back to games,
- 2:06Speaker 4: and yeah, this place. After I got drafted by the Colts,
- 2:10Speaker 4: I was moving out of my college apartment. My mom
- 2:12Speaker 4: came up and basically we moved all of my college stuff,
- 2:15Speaker 4: just put him into a like a storage unit and
- 2:17Speaker 4: just it's been sitting here for like twenty years. And
- 2:20Speaker 4: opened this kind of hotel bar and I said, I
- 2:23Speaker 4: got a bunch of my mom kind of things. It's junk.
- 2:25Speaker 4: It's in this storage unit. Yeah, fucking dig in there.
- 2:27Speaker 4: So they went and that's that all this stuff. That's
- 2:29Speaker 4: what my mom thought of this stuff. It was all
- 2:31Speaker 4: basically garbage. But anyway, it's fun to come back.
- 2:34Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 2:35Speaker 2: With choosing Tennessee, like your old man obviously went to
- 2:37Speaker 2: Old Miss, what was your recruiting process, like way back
- 2:41Speaker 2: in ninety.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Four, Yeah, that was hard. I mean, for years, Taylor,
- 2:44Speaker 4: I thought Ole Miss was the only school that ever existed, right,
- 2:47Speaker 4: I grew up in New Orleans. Of course, you know
- 2:49Speaker 4: LSU was the Bibby, the top school in the state.
- 2:52Speaker 4: But Ole Miss with the games we went to on
- 2:55Speaker 4: the weekends, and then all of a sudden, you're a
- 2:57Speaker 4: junior in high school and you start getting recruited by
- 3:00Speaker 4: other schools. And I really didn't know how serious it
- 3:04Speaker 4: was up until I got my first handwritten letter from
- 3:08Speaker 4: Bobby Ballden at Florida State. And yeah, I guess I'd
- 3:11Speaker 4: heard enough about recruiting. There was a lot of form letters,
- 3:13Speaker 4: the type letters, but you got a handwritten letter. I
- 3:17Speaker 4: mean I checked it. It smeared. I mean, it was
- 3:19Speaker 4: a legitimate handwritten letter, Bobby Ballden, and I was like, Okay.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I figured, if he's writing me a handwritten letter, tell
- 3:25Speaker 4: me he's going to recruit me. Maybe there are some
- 3:28Speaker 4: other schools out there that are interested. And that's when
- 3:31Speaker 4: I started kind of looking around, I guess, opening my
- 3:33Speaker 4: eyes up a little bit. And had a great visit
- 3:36Speaker 4: here to Tennessee. I was snowing, didn't get to really
- 3:40Speaker 4: see the stadium in its glorious view, but met a
- 3:43Speaker 4: lot of good people. And my brother Cooper went to
- 3:46Speaker 4: Ole Miss on scholarship. Taylor had a neck injury had
- 3:49Speaker 4: to stop playing, and he was in the right school
- 3:52Speaker 4: for him if football didn't work out. And that's kind
- 3:54Speaker 4: of when I said, that's really how you should choose
- 3:57Speaker 4: the school. If I get hurt the first day, but
- 3:59Speaker 4: I'd be happy in the school. And that's kind of
- 4:00Speaker 4: how I felt about here at Tennessee. So and my dad,
- 4:03Speaker 4: I give him credit. If he would have said, son,
- 4:06Speaker 4: you're going to Old Miss. That's the end of the story.
- 4:08Speaker 4: That would have been it. I would have said, yes,
- 4:10Speaker 4: sir dev He said, you're eighteen years old, You're old
- 4:12Speaker 4: enough to make your own decision. I'll support you wherever
- 4:14Speaker 4: you go. And he'd call a lot of flak from
- 4:17Speaker 4: Old Miss people, and how could you not, you know,
- 4:19Speaker 4: make your son go to your school. You know, you've
- 4:21Speaker 4: kind of let us down. It was I think. I
- 4:23Speaker 4: know he was disappointed, and a lot of course when
- 4:25Speaker 4: Eli went to Old Miss, everybody made up it was
- 4:27Speaker 4: all good. But I respect my dad for letting me
- 4:29Speaker 4: make that decision. And uh, you know, I think when
- 4:32Speaker 4: you make those decisions, it's kind of you kind of
- 4:35Speaker 4: make it the right decision after the fact by just
- 4:37Speaker 4: going all in and not looking back. And so, uh,
- 4:40Speaker 4: it was a hard decision, but I appreciate my parents
- 4:42Speaker 4: kind of supporting me in it.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Man.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I feel like if he was my boy he'd be
- 4:48Speaker 1: not to mention.
- 4:48Speaker 3: He did come back a senior year, and ultimately the
- 4:51Speaker 3: season didn't go. It didn't end the way you wanted
- 4:54Speaker 3: it to.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Well, look, I mean.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Was it like forty something the seventeen.
- 4:59Speaker 4: It was it Nebraska? Yeah, I forgot about that game.
- 5:01Speaker 4: There's none of those pictures in here. Well I took out.
- 5:05Speaker 4: That's not just because you're here. Yeah, when you come back,
- 5:10Speaker 4: I mean you sign up for all of it, right,
- 5:12Speaker 4: I mean you sign up for it to be glorious
- 5:14Speaker 4: and to go undefeated and all that. Obviously, if I
- 5:17Speaker 4: would have gotten injured, you know I was. I was
- 5:20Speaker 4: okay with that. I just I felt like I'd rushed
- 5:24Speaker 4: my first three years in college. I was always running
- 5:26Speaker 4: a class, running the new interviews, and I didn't want
- 5:28Speaker 4: to be my age now for eight years old and
- 5:30Speaker 4: kind of wondering what was college even I don't remember
- 5:32Speaker 4: anything about college. My senior year, I slowed down. I'd
- 5:36Speaker 4: already graduated. I got more mentally stronger. My rookie year
- 5:40Speaker 4: with the Colts was a struggle. Right. We only one
- 5:42Speaker 4: three and thirteen twenty eight picks. I don't think I
- 5:45Speaker 4: would have handled that had I not stayed four years
- 5:47Speaker 4: in college. Right, that's the kind of season that can
- 5:49Speaker 4: kind of break you. But I kind of said, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 4: I'm actually doing some decent things. We're not winning any games,
- 5:54Speaker 4: and we went thirteen and three my second year. I
- 5:57Speaker 4: gave all that credit to stay in four years in college,
- 6:00Speaker 4: and so it was the right decision for me.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Now, did you come to come to that decision on
- 6:05Speaker 2: your own or was that sitting down and talking to
- 6:06Speaker 2: your dad, talking to people you loved me and like
- 6:08Speaker 2: what should I do?
- 6:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's funny, it's a great question because my dad
- 6:11Speaker 4: was always one of those guys that said, hey, ask
- 6:14Speaker 4: some different people some questions, like call some people that
- 6:17Speaker 4: have had this decision. So he kind of formed a list,
- 6:19Speaker 4: and I guess he I don't know how, Like somehow
- 6:22Speaker 4: he helped me get some phone numbers. So I called Troy,
- 6:25Speaker 4: aightman who stayed four years in college. He said he
- 6:27Speaker 4: really wanted to be the first pick in the draft.
- 6:29Speaker 4: That was important to him, and he was drew BLEDSOE
- 6:32Speaker 4: left as a junior. He said he knew he was
- 6:35Speaker 4: gonna be the first pick in the draft as a junior,
- 6:36Speaker 4: and he was like, I'm ready to go I'm a
- 6:39Speaker 4: totally name dropp here. I talked to Michael Jordan, who
- 6:42Speaker 4: came out as a junior.
- 6:43Speaker 2: That's a that's a good name drop.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yeah, and he just said, look, I thought I was ready,
- 6:48Speaker 4: and so I guess I came away with it that
- 6:50Speaker 4: it's it truly has to be your decision of what
- 6:52Speaker 4: you really want. And I probably would have been the
- 6:54Speaker 4: first pick as a junior. The Jets had the first pick.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Interesting to see think how things would have turned out.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Parcels was the head coach, Belichick was the decordinator. Just
- 7:03Speaker 4: he ended up coaching the Patriots and Brady who knows.
- 7:06Speaker 4: So I just it was the it was the right
- 7:10Speaker 4: decision for me. So uh, Eventually you kind of gather
- 7:13Speaker 4: the information. You sort of had the old yellow notepad
- 7:17Speaker 4: out with the pluses and minuses. You look at them.
- 7:19Speaker 4: You know, it's kind of fifty to fifty either way.
- 7:21Speaker 4: You make a decision, you pray about it, and then
- 7:23Speaker 4: you go with it. Uh. And so it ended up
- 7:26Speaker 4: working out for me.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Your first year. You alluded to with the is it
- 7:29Speaker 1: still the record?
- 7:30Speaker 4: Yeah, which which is amazing with seventeen games. Now, yeah,
- 7:33Speaker 4: seventeen games. I mean Mahomes is breaking every other record.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Why can't we break record?
- 7:38Speaker 3: Right?
- 7:39Speaker 1: How do you keep it?
- 7:40Speaker 4: But the problem is when they struggled early with picks
- 7:42Speaker 4: that they take them out. Leave them in there, let
- 7:45Speaker 4: him learn right. Yeah, I'm with you, Jeez, I'm over it.
- 7:50Speaker 4: But record, I'm a piece. Eli would have broken it easily. Yeah,
- 7:54Speaker 4: he only started six games that I put him in there.
- 7:58Speaker 4: This is my top. I got a good chance this year.
- 8:01Speaker 4: We got we got several kind of good chance. I mean,
- 8:04Speaker 4: is mey gonna get the starting job? I mean I
- 8:06Speaker 4: don't want Nicks to do it in Denver obviously, but
- 8:09Speaker 4: if he.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Did do it, it'd be like, well that's a.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, so you know you'll be the first phone
- 8:16Speaker 1: call for that rookie he does do it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Put you got to say, whoever, whoever beats you to
- 8:20Speaker 2: send a handwritten letter.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Be a sixteen to seventeen game starter or so put
- 8:24Speaker 4: all these guys.
- 8:24Speaker 1: In the now kind of like as competitors.
- 8:28Speaker 3: When you start to when you have an up and
- 8:30Speaker 3: down year like that, and then you're three and thirteen,
- 8:31Speaker 3: you're like the you you were the first their first
- 8:33Speaker 3: round pick, and you do set the record for interceptions
- 8:37Speaker 3: like the mental fortitude on trying to keep the noise
- 8:40Speaker 3: out of your head going into that next year, because
- 8:42Speaker 3: I'm just I was obviously young then, but now thinking
- 8:44Speaker 3: about it, if a rookie quarterbacks, a rookie quarterback is
- 8:47Speaker 3: breaking that record, they're just getting drug across the mud.
- 8:50Speaker 4: It was like it was tough. And I think playing
- 8:53Speaker 4: in Indianapolis probably would have been different had I been
- 8:56Speaker 4: with the Jets. If I would have been with the Jets,
- 8:59Speaker 4: and hey, part would have ventured me way before the
- 9:03Speaker 4: sixteenth game. But I don't know, maybe somewhere Indianapolis at
- 9:06Speaker 4: the time, being a smaller market, maybe that helped me
- 9:09Speaker 4: a little bit. So it was bad. Uh, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 4: we were playing on the CBS, you know, e broadcast
- 9:17Speaker 4: team every weekend, like you know, there was no Madden.
- 9:20Speaker 4: There was no Nance or Summer All or Phil Simms
- 9:24Speaker 4: coming to Indy. Uh, you know, no Monday night TV.
- 9:26Speaker 4: So but yeah, look, it's the kind of season that
- 9:29Speaker 4: can sort of can kind of make or break yet, right,
- 9:32Speaker 4: And I just we actually were in some games, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 4: everybody like nobody was getting up to play us, right.
- 9:38Speaker 4: We played the Niners that year, Steve Young, Jay Rice,
- 9:41Speaker 4: We played the Jets who went to the AFC Championship.
- 9:43Speaker 4: You know, they had us as a circled win. So
- 9:45Speaker 4: we actually had some actually fairly close games. We'd blow
- 9:48Speaker 4: it in the end. But that's what I kind of
- 9:50Speaker 4: went off of. I'm like, I think I actually can
- 9:53Speaker 4: do this if I just don't throw three interceptions in
- 9:56Speaker 4: the first half. So it didn't break me and my coaches.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Jim Mora had a tough coach, but he was loyal.
- 10:04Speaker 4: He stuck, He stuck with me. He said, hey, stay
- 10:06Speaker 4: in there, keep learning. We're going to fight through this thing.
- 10:09Speaker 4: And sure enough we did. I'm not sure if it's
- 10:10Speaker 4: been but at the time it was the biggest turnaround
- 10:12Speaker 4: in history from three to thirteen to thirteen and three.
- 10:15Speaker 4: There's no way I'd do that if I don't play
- 10:17Speaker 4: all those games rookie. So, uh, I tell all these
- 10:20Speaker 4: college quarterbacks. We were talking earlier about that camp that
- 10:23Speaker 4: we have, and I tell all these guys, it's a marathon,
- 10:25Speaker 4: it's not a sprint. Don't don't let them. You know,
- 10:27Speaker 4: a couple of bad seasons break you, right, just keep
- 10:29Speaker 4: learning from it and keep getting better.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah, two thousand and nine, you're playing the Miami dolphins
- 10:34Speaker 2: and John Gruden crowns you the sheriff. Now this is
- 10:38Speaker 2: kind of just Hey, how cool is that nickname? And
- 10:40Speaker 2: also how long did it take the stick? Because sheriff,
- 10:43Speaker 2: unless you're writing a movie, there's no cooler nickname to
- 10:46Speaker 2: be bestowed on somebody.
- 10:48Speaker 4: I uh, you know, I never ever once, if you
- 10:52Speaker 4: ever hear me referring to myself as a sheriff, shoot me.
- 10:59Speaker 1: The sheriff.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I've never wants texted, Hey, you know, sheriff will be
- 11:03Speaker 4: there at three o'clock. You know, please, My brothers would
- 11:06Speaker 4: would have have their way with me. Yeah, Gruden, Uh
- 11:10Speaker 4: what was his expression? You know? Uh? When when Peyton
- 11:13Speaker 4: comes to town, he lays down the law and he
- 11:16Speaker 4: always gets his man. He finds who he's wanting going
- 11:19Speaker 4: to get and he gets his man. So look, I
- 11:22Speaker 4: love Gruden and he was a great broadcaster. It was fun.
- 11:25Speaker 4: So I you love the nickname.
- 11:29Speaker 2: The nickname, It's okay, it's the best nickname.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I wave. I'll respond to people never call me Peyton.
- 11:34Speaker 4: They just yell omaha or sheriff and you keep going.
- 11:38Speaker 4: But like I said, I will never go third person
- 11:40Speaker 4: on you saying you know, Sheriff's heare.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You know where were the teammates ever picking it up
- 11:44Speaker 2: calling you the sheriff.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Yeah, no, for sure. Oh yeah, Vaughn, I mean von Miller,
- 11:48Speaker 4: I gets that's all they called me.
- 11:50Speaker 1: That's it.
- 11:50Speaker 3: That is Yeah, there's there's this legend of Peyton Manning.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I've had some teammates that play with you and they
- 11:57Speaker 3: would say they would tell stories like if a tight
- 12:00Speaker 3: end drop the pass and then a you get him
- 12:03Speaker 3: off the field, and then if a coach tries to
- 12:05Speaker 3: get him back on the field, You're like, no, no, no,
- 12:07Speaker 3: he's got to stay on the sideline.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Whether it was that, whether it was like whether it
- 12:12Speaker 1: was like that or not. When do you feel like
- 12:14Speaker 1: you started to like have that confidence in you two
- 12:16Speaker 1: take over like that?
- 12:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean certainly not early on, not coming off
- 12:20Speaker 4: a tough rookie season, and like, I mean, the number
- 12:22Speaker 4: one thing that you want to do as a NFL player,
- 12:24Speaker 4: you guys know this is try to earn the respect
- 12:27Speaker 4: of your teammates, right, and when you're twenty two years
- 12:30Speaker 4: old as a quarterback, you got thirty seven thirty eight
- 12:33Speaker 4: year old grown adults in that huddle with you. My
- 12:36Speaker 4: first game in college here at Tennessee. I went into
- 12:38Speaker 4: the huddle. I was a freshman. You know, I kind
- 12:40Speaker 4: of had this pre planned speech for my first game.
- 12:43Speaker 4: I know, I'm just a freshman. Let's go down the
- 12:45Speaker 4: field and score where Big Left tackles, like shut the
- 12:47Speaker 4: f up and call the effing play. Yeah, And it
- 12:49Speaker 4: was the most It was like the best thing that
- 12:50Speaker 4: ever happened to me. Because college, high school, NFL, they
- 12:53Speaker 4: don't want to hear that. They want to see you
- 12:56Speaker 4: take a hit. They want to see you take responsibility
- 12:59Speaker 4: for holding the ball too long, right, not blaming you know,
- 13:03Speaker 4: the receivers or o linemen. So that's what I wanted
- 13:07Speaker 4: to do when I got to the NFL. So yeah,
- 13:09Speaker 4: it took you know years before that. I never kicked
- 13:13Speaker 4: the guy out for chopping the ball. I would kick
- 13:15Speaker 4: a guy out if he if he made a mental error,
- 13:17Speaker 4: like if he if he jumped off sides and maybe
- 13:20Speaker 4: did it twice. And the legend, the one, the one
- 13:24Speaker 4: that is, we were playing the Ravens one time and
- 13:29Speaker 4: this guy jumped off sides to start the series. All
- 13:31Speaker 4: we had to do is get one first down. We
- 13:33Speaker 4: were gonna run the clock out, and he jumped off sides.
- 13:35Speaker 4: On the first play, and sure enough we don't get
- 13:38Speaker 4: the first down. We punt to Ed Reid, who's you know,
- 13:40Speaker 4: remembers what I electric he was, and somehow we end
- 13:44Speaker 4: up stopping him and we win the game. So now
- 13:46Speaker 4: we're going to take the knee. We have the ball
- 13:48Speaker 4: with twelve seconds that we're gonna take the knee. So
- 13:50Speaker 4: the guy that jumped off sides is in the huddle
- 13:52Speaker 4: to take the knee, and I said get out and
- 13:56Speaker 4: he's like, he's like, what, We're just taking the knee.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, get out out and so he
- 14:01Speaker 4: ran out. We had to substitute bring somebody in to
- 14:03Speaker 4: take the knee, and he said his dad asked of
- 14:05Speaker 4: after the games, like, why don't you have to go
- 14:07Speaker 4: out to take the knees? Like, oh, talk about it
- 14:10Speaker 4: killed this play, so uh, you know, But like like
- 14:13Speaker 4: I said, but it was all I was hard on myself,
- 14:16Speaker 4: people could. I probably cussed myself more in practice than
- 14:20Speaker 4: I did anybody else. So I think people knew that
- 14:22Speaker 4: I was hard on myself, and so when I was
- 14:24Speaker 4: hard on them, it was fair, right, And and I hope,
- 14:27Speaker 4: you know, my teammates felt that way, that it was
- 14:29Speaker 4: all about just trying to win. Let's try to do
- 14:31Speaker 4: it together. I never ever wanted to embarrass anyone. This
- 14:34Speaker 4: was a rookie receiver. I'm not going to mention his
- 14:37Speaker 4: name on the podcast. He may live in Nashville, so
- 14:41Speaker 4: he knows who he is. But that was kind of
- 14:43Speaker 4: a one a one off, if you will, dude.
- 14:46Speaker 2: We had we had earlier this morning, we had Will
- 14:48Speaker 2: Levis on and Will Levis is talking about working himself
- 14:51Speaker 2: into a leadership role on how that looks for him.
- 14:54Speaker 2: At what point in your career did you know, Okay,
- 14:56Speaker 2: I can start telling these guys point blank, this is
- 14:59Speaker 2: how I as opposed to kind of like beating around
- 15:01Speaker 2: the bush.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a great it's a great question because it's
- 15:04Speaker 4: a feel h Taylor. I think I think you got
- 15:07Speaker 4: to do some things first, right, I think he got
- 15:09Speaker 4: to lead a two minutes drew that game Will had
- 15:12Speaker 4: against the Dolphins right last year, that was a that
- 15:15Speaker 4: was a good thing, Right. I think he can bank
- 15:17Speaker 4: that one and that that earns you some stripes. So
- 15:19Speaker 4: you love to have some continuity, certainly, you know, leading
- 15:24Speaker 4: a team to the playoffs or winning a division or
- 15:26Speaker 4: beating a team that you're not supposed to just those
- 15:29Speaker 4: kind of things where you just sort of kind of
- 15:32Speaker 4: check some boxes. That's that's how it was for me.
- 15:35Speaker 4: You know, I didn't say a whole lot in my
- 15:36Speaker 4: rookie year. I just wanted to earn their respect. And
- 15:40Speaker 4: you know, I had a two minute drive to beat
- 15:42Speaker 4: the Jets that year, and I was excited. But uh,
- 15:45Speaker 4: you know, I just don't think veteran players, you guys
- 15:47Speaker 4: know this, and they don't want to hear young players,
- 15:50Speaker 4: you know, barking orders until they truly have earned their respect.
- 15:54Speaker 4: And I think that's a process that takes a little time.
- 15:57Speaker 4: But I liked what Will did last year. You know,
- 16:00Speaker 4: he's tougher than nails. He stands in the pocket, he runs.
- 16:04Speaker 4: I like him to slide a little more, just to
- 16:07Speaker 4: stay healthy. Look, that's hard because I never could run.
- 16:09Speaker 4: I never had the option. But these guys that can run,
- 16:12Speaker 4: as you know, you still want to be there all
- 16:15Speaker 4: seventeen weeks, and so I'm pulling for him. I like
- 16:18Speaker 4: Brian Callahan. He was an assistant coach with me in Denver.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I think that could be a good uh you know,
- 16:23Speaker 4: head coach quarterback combo.
- 16:25Speaker 3: How everybody talks about the Manning Brady rivalry when you
- 16:30Speaker 3: were in it, How real was that in your mind personally?
- 16:33Speaker 3: Like if you when after a game, are you are
- 16:35Speaker 3: you searching to see how he did?
- 16:37Speaker 1: Like what was that rivalry?
- 16:38Speaker 4: Yeah? I mean, I mean you always just knew, right,
- 16:40Speaker 4: if there's no Tom Brady, I mean you always you
- 16:43Speaker 4: always knew that, you know that the Patriots had won.
- 16:46Speaker 4: I mean I guess when it really started when we
- 16:48Speaker 4: played him in the regular season so many times, and
- 16:51Speaker 4: if we lost to him, you just knew we're going
- 16:54Speaker 4: to have to go play that New England in the
- 16:56Speaker 4: playoffs and this like we lost to him week one
- 16:58Speaker 4: one time, I'm like, we're coming back here in in January. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 4: And so you just knew they were going to be there.
- 17:05Speaker 4: They were so consistent. Look, it was Tom, it was Belichick,
- 17:09Speaker 4: it was defense, it was the whole thing, right, It
- 17:12Speaker 4: was just this kind of this triple headed monster. So
- 17:16Speaker 4: when you played them, yeah, you knew you had to
- 17:18Speaker 4: be on your game. You knew their defense was going
- 17:20Speaker 4: to be stingy. You know, you just they always Belichick,
- 17:24Speaker 4: you know, kind of the easiest way to describe him.
- 17:26Speaker 4: He always took away the things you really liked to do,
- 17:29Speaker 4: so you had to find something else to kind of
- 17:31Speaker 4: do well that game, and then Tom was going to
- 17:33Speaker 4: be on his game, so you had to score some points.
- 17:35Speaker 4: But you know, major respect to everybody during that era.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we were.
- 17:41Speaker 2: You were mentioning in your last answer about how you
- 17:43Speaker 2: feel like you corbacks just seem to do something a
- 17:45Speaker 2: little bit.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Now.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I fumbled a big question when we had a Rich
- 17:48Speaker 2: eisend on the podcast because my dad told me something
- 17:52Speaker 2: as a kid, and my dad told me this as well.
- 17:54Speaker 2: But I was told that when you first got in
- 17:56Speaker 2: the NFL, you didn't want to do any marketing stuff
- 17:58Speaker 2: until you kind of proved it a little bit.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Is that? Yeah, that is true. I just didn't which
- 18:03Speaker 4: people would laugh at. Now. It's like, you know, you
- 18:05Speaker 4: do so many commercials, Peyton, I can't believe there actually
- 18:08Speaker 4: was a time when you didn't do anything. But yeah,
- 18:11Speaker 4: I think there's something to that about just kind of
- 18:14Speaker 4: earning your stripes a little bit and make that the
- 18:17Speaker 4: incentive right to go win some games and then, man,
- 18:20Speaker 4: some things are gonna come your way when you do it,
- 18:22Speaker 4: but not just because you got drafted or whatnot. You know,
- 18:25Speaker 4: to go and earn it and that's Look, those days
- 18:28Speaker 4: are probably out the window now because of what's happening
- 18:30Speaker 4: now in college right with an I l but uh, yeah,
- 18:33Speaker 4: I remember the first real commercial uh that I did
- 18:36Speaker 4: was kind of uh in my second year uh in
- 18:40Speaker 4: the NFL.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:41Speaker 4: We'd had a good season, so I felt like i'd
- 18:43Speaker 4: kind of maybe earned some stripes. I did a Gatorade
- 18:45Speaker 4: commercial with Michael Jordan another name drop yeah, against but
- 18:51Speaker 4: I can tell you where I was on the totem pole.
- 18:53Speaker 4: I never knew what a what a what a double
- 18:55Speaker 4: was for a commercial. Michael Jordan had this double guy
- 18:58Speaker 4: that looked kind of like him that just made a
- 19:00Speaker 4: ton of money, you know, filling in for Mike on
- 19:03Speaker 4: some of the commercials that he did. So I got
- 19:05Speaker 4: there and they said, hey, your double is going to
- 19:08Speaker 4: be standing in for you. I'm like, oh, I've got
- 19:10Speaker 4: a double. This is this is big.
- 19:12Speaker 1: You went to see him and.
- 19:13Speaker 4: They said, uh, they said, your hair is a little
- 19:16Speaker 4: longer than the double. Do you mind if we give
- 19:19Speaker 4: you a little haircut to match the double? I was like,
- 19:22Speaker 4: is that how it's supposed to work?
- 19:23Speaker 2: Like?
- 19:23Speaker 4: Would you tell Michael to shave his mustache to match
- 19:26Speaker 4: his double? Something? Tells me I was pretty low in
- 19:28Speaker 4: the totem poll. But yeah, look, it's still kind of
- 19:31Speaker 4: my advice to rookies is, man, just go earn it,
- 19:34Speaker 4: go do it. But the team's going to try to
- 19:36Speaker 4: promote you, and the marketing team's gonna want you to
- 19:38Speaker 4: go meet every sponsor. I get that, there's excitement. It
- 19:42Speaker 4: really wasn't me as much Taylor as much as the
- 19:44Speaker 4: Colt's organization. I had a great general manager and Bill
- 19:46Speaker 4: Pully and who just said, hey, let this guy play
- 19:48Speaker 4: football first before you kind of start trying to use
- 19:51Speaker 4: them to promote the team and whatnot. And that really
- 19:54Speaker 4: helped me just kind of concentrate on football.
- 19:56Speaker 2: With your nephew, has he kind of taken that same
- 19:58Speaker 2: approach that was.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Kind of with My advice was, look, you know, he's
- 20:01Speaker 4: my nephew. He reaches out to me, you know, for questions,
- 20:04Speaker 4: but his dad's been around the block. You know, Cooper's
- 20:07Speaker 4: giving him great advice. And I think he wants to play.
- 20:09Speaker 4: He wants to establish himself, you know first, and you know,
- 20:13Speaker 4: obviously I think they got a good team this year.
- 20:15Speaker 4: I'm a big fan of Quinn. I've gotten to know him.
- 20:18Speaker 4: He comes down to our camp. The two of them
- 20:19Speaker 4: get along great. So I'm proud of him for staying there.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Most kids probably transfer in that setting, but he stayed there.
- 20:26Speaker 4: He likes playing for SARK, he likes the system, and
- 20:29Speaker 4: when he does get in there, he's going to benefit
- 20:31Speaker 4: from kind of having a little continuity in the system.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I know, it's my third one in
- 20:35Speaker 1: a row.
- 20:36Speaker 4: But you're good.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Your nephew obviously calls you a lot, and I know
- 20:39Speaker 2: you and Eli have a big rivalry. Who do you
- 20:41Speaker 2: think he calls more?
- 20:43Speaker 4: It's funny, you know, like he's I mean, these these
- 20:46Speaker 4: nineteen twenty year olds. I mean the text response rate
- 20:49Speaker 4: it's not super high, right, it's not a great completion percentage,
- 20:52Speaker 4: So I don't I kind of let him reach out
- 20:56Speaker 4: to me if he has a question. He came to
- 20:58Speaker 4: Denver a couple of years ago. We worked out. That
- 21:00Speaker 4: was fun. And he will every now and then text
- 21:03Speaker 4: me with a question about, Hey, a two minute drill.
- 21:07Speaker 4: This is what happened in practice today, And I'm sure
- 21:09Speaker 4: as soon as he texts me the question he regrets
- 21:11Speaker 4: it because you can't answer a question about a two
- 21:15Speaker 4: minute drill with a text back what the phone is.
- 21:18Speaker 4: You have to go to the voice memo. You have
- 21:20Speaker 4: to and it can't be just one. So you bang
- 21:25Speaker 4: them back with a seven minute voice memo response about
- 21:29Speaker 4: about the two minute about you know what the defense
- 21:31Speaker 4: is doing, and the plays that you like. You got
- 21:34Speaker 4: to go to your staples. Yeah, the plays that you like.
- 21:36Speaker 4: And you finish it and you're like, I didn't even
- 21:38Speaker 4: mention the fact that a defense after a time out
- 21:41Speaker 4: will probably come with an exotic blitz, so you better
- 21:45Speaker 4: call a max protection coming out of the time out.
- 21:48Speaker 4: And then you finish that when that's about a six
- 21:50Speaker 4: minute or and you're like, well, but totally even you know,
- 21:54Speaker 4: forgot about the red zone. Yes, And so three voice
- 21:56Speaker 4: memos later, send me a video back.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Moore, Who do you think the favorite uncle is?
- 22:02Speaker 4: So? I don't know if he has one, hope if
- 22:06Speaker 4: you did, I don't know. I mean I haven't really
- 22:13Speaker 4: seen it. I mean, Eli's a good uncle to my kids.
- 22:16Speaker 4: He is, he calls them, He's got nicknames for all
- 22:19Speaker 4: of them, you know, yeah, kids. So I've said we're
- 22:21Speaker 4: probably pretty equal.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Okay, you talked about two minutes, and then there's so
- 22:25Speaker 2: much poetry when you watch a good two minute drill
- 22:27Speaker 2: quarterback go down the field and just pick a part
- 22:30Speaker 2: of defense all the way through. It's truly something beautiful.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Is there a one two minute drive that sticks out
- 22:34Speaker 2: in your mind where you're like you essentially played chess
- 22:37Speaker 2: while the defense is playing checkers.
- 22:40Speaker 4: I mean I mentioned this this one against the Jets
- 22:42Speaker 4: my rookie year. Belichick's the decordinator, Parcells is the head coach.
- 22:47Speaker 4: They go to the AFC Championship. So I don't know.
- 22:50Speaker 4: We had a fourth and eighteen, which is that you
- 22:53Speaker 4: have him right where you want him right.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's an ideal situation.
- 22:56Speaker 4: And so it was fourth and thirteen in Belichick went
- 23:00Speaker 4: all out blitz and so we are not ready for
- 23:04Speaker 4: we're gonna get sacked whatever. We had a false start,
- 23:07Speaker 4: so that takes it to fourth and eighteen. So now
- 23:09Speaker 4: that's always the chess game. Does the defensive coordinator do
- 23:14Speaker 4: the same blitz on the next play or since he
- 23:16Speaker 4: showed his hand, he's gonna do something different. So we,
- 23:20Speaker 4: of course the two and twelve colts go, well, he's
- 23:23Speaker 4: definitely gonna show the same blitz again. So we keep
- 23:26Speaker 4: eight guys in the block, saying like one guy out
- 23:29Speaker 4: on the route, and what does Belichick do? Drop eight
- 23:32Speaker 4: guys in the coverage. There's nobody open, and me like,
- 23:36Speaker 4: by the book, quarterback, hey, if nobody's open, throw your
- 23:39Speaker 4: check down. Probably not what you're supposed to do on
- 23:42Speaker 4: fourth and eighteen, right, But coach I was listening, I
- 23:45Speaker 4: was taking notes, and I throw this checkdown to Marshall
- 23:48Speaker 4: Falch and he breaks seven tackles and gets the first
- 23:52Speaker 4: down and then we go down away and throw a
- 23:55Speaker 4: game winning touchdown. So I always remember that one. But yeah,
- 23:58Speaker 4: the two minute drill to quarterbacks, the pressures on the defense,
- 24:03Speaker 4: they have the lead, It really ought to be a
- 24:04Speaker 4: time for a quarterback to kind of free up a
- 24:07Speaker 4: little bit, right, and let make the defense get tight. Right, Hey,
- 24:11Speaker 4: we can't give up this lead. Hey, let's better not
- 24:12Speaker 4: blitz them. We're gonna give a man a man. And
- 24:14Speaker 4: so you want to try to kind of lean into
- 24:16Speaker 4: that a little bit, But it means you've screwed up
- 24:20Speaker 4: in the first three and a half quarters to get
- 24:22Speaker 4: to that point as a quarterback. So it's your chance
- 24:24Speaker 4: to get out of a bad jam. But hopefully you
- 24:27Speaker 4: can play a little free in that situation, because nobody
- 24:31Speaker 4: really expects you to come back and maybe you can
- 24:32Speaker 4: surprise the crowd.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yeah what what coordinator gave you the most problems?
- 24:37Speaker 4: Patriots spellcheck Rex Ryan was tough, you know, he just
- 24:41Speaker 4: did things that didn't make sense to me. I'm like,
- 24:45Speaker 4: there's no way he can bring that guy, and he would.
- 24:48Speaker 4: I was always looking when I watched the defense will Okay,
- 24:51Speaker 4: you know they're never going to bring the will linebacker
- 24:55Speaker 4: and the strong safety, so we can eliminate that. And
- 24:57Speaker 4: then you watch the Jets or the Ravens game against
- 25:01Speaker 4: the Bills and they bring that exact wlitch and I'm like, dang,
- 25:05Speaker 4: you know, and so uh, I had a lot of
- 25:08Speaker 4: sleepless nights getting ready to play against his teams.
- 25:12Speaker 2: The uh We've talked about you getting on other guys,
- 25:16Speaker 2: and a lot of times when the quarterback, especially an
- 25:17Speaker 2: established quarterback, speaks up as an offensive lineman, you don't
- 25:21Speaker 2: say a fucking word. You just sit there, You take it,
- 25:23Speaker 2: and maybe the locker rooms say, maybe please don't yell
- 25:25Speaker 2: at me in front of everybody like that next time.
- 25:26Speaker 2: But there was one situation when you were at the
- 25:29Speaker 2: Colts Jeff Saturday yelling about running the ball, which is
- 25:33Speaker 2: every offensive lineman's dream. If you if you can just
- 25:35Speaker 2: run heavy the whole game, the pressure's off, you can
- 25:37Speaker 2: bruise it and you walk over there, and this is
- 25:40Speaker 2: just I'm from an offensive line perspective.
- 25:43Speaker 4: You come over there getting jet.
- 25:44Speaker 2: And then you got four or five?
- 25:46Speaker 5: Can you give them the whole listen, It's not that
- 25:48Speaker 5: big of a deal. It's not that big of a
- 25:49Speaker 5: deal that situation. Yeah, I mean, we were all frustrated.
- 25:55Speaker 5: We had this great drive to get down there, and
- 25:58Speaker 5: we called a run play. You remember those days, we
- 26:01Speaker 5: were a one back offense. We never had a fullback.
- 26:03Speaker 5: So the rules were if the defense just put too
- 26:05Speaker 5: many guys in there, you got out of the run
- 26:08Speaker 5: and you threw a quick slant or a fade to
- 26:10Speaker 5: Marvin or Reggie. And so the rams they went to
- 26:14Speaker 5: a you know, a crowded line of scrimmage, like on
- 26:17Speaker 5: first down and second down.
- 26:18Speaker 4: So we threw through incomplete and we had run the
- 26:21Speaker 4: ball all the way down to that point. And now
- 26:23Speaker 4: on third down it's third and goal from the seven.
- 26:26Speaker 4: You throw again, so we go three straight incompletes. I'm frustrated,
- 26:30Speaker 4: but the line definitely is frustrated. So we're coming off
- 26:33Speaker 4: the sideline. I could just hear them over there talking
- 26:36Speaker 4: to the line. He's barely hearing.
- 26:41Speaker 2: It.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I don't know exactly what he's saying, but
- 26:44Speaker 4: I know what he's talking about. And you're just sitting
- 26:46Speaker 4: there breathing. And finally I just go over there. And
- 26:48Speaker 4: as soon as I get over there, I'm like, this
- 26:51Speaker 4: is a bad movie. Oh my god, and they all
- 26:53Speaker 4: stand up. I got no back up. You know, Stokeley's
- 26:55Speaker 4: going the other way to the D B side of
- 26:57Speaker 4: the bench and uh so, yeah, I was miked up
- 27:01Speaker 4: at the time, and so that that lives on forever.
- 27:04Speaker 4: But Jeff was my roommate on the road. Our lockers
- 27:07Speaker 4: were next to each other. My locker in the Coast
- 27:10Speaker 4: locker room was right in between the offensive lineman. You
- 27:12Speaker 4: know a lot of times there's a quarterback section the
- 27:15Speaker 4: receiver section. I put it right in between the five
- 27:18Speaker 4: starting offensive lineman because those are the guys never protecting you.
- 27:22Speaker 4: Those are the guys who were talking all the time
- 27:24Speaker 4: about checks and audibles. I wanted them to kind of
- 27:27Speaker 4: know what I was going to audible too. I didn't
- 27:29Speaker 4: want them to be surprised, And so we'd sit by
- 27:31Speaker 4: each other on the plane ridse but yeah, that one
- 27:34Speaker 4: certainly lives on.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Lives on forever.
- 27:37Speaker 4: You guys, tell I'm sorry.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I was going to talk about when it's all coming
- 27:41Speaker 3: to an end, like your mortality. Obviously, you go out
- 27:43Speaker 3: with the Super Bowl, but you had the neck injury,
- 27:45Speaker 3: you had the you know, you had the things going
- 27:48Speaker 3: you had the things going on physically to where you're
- 27:50Speaker 3: throwing for like north to fifty touchdowns, you run forty touchdowns,
- 27:53Speaker 3: and then that last year you kind of know that
- 27:55Speaker 3: it's your last year going out, Like what was it
- 27:57Speaker 3: like for you when that mortality started to set in? Like, damn,
- 27:59Speaker 3: this game is it forever? Even though I've played, Yeah,
- 28:02Speaker 3: felt like forever.
- 28:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think you just you just kind
- 28:07Speaker 4: of know, at least for me, when certain throws that
- 28:11Speaker 4: you used to always make that you just don't make
- 28:15Speaker 4: them anymore, and the ball's not going where you're where
- 28:18Speaker 4: it's supposed to, you just sort of kind of go, hmm,
- 28:22Speaker 4: that's different, and and so you sort of accept it.
- 28:28Speaker 4: And so I think somewhere in my last season I
- 28:31Speaker 4: kind of knew it was going to be my last season.
- 28:34Speaker 4: But Derek Jeter, I'm just on a name drop and roll.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Here putting good names out there.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Announced his decision to retire before his last season, and
- 28:45Speaker 4: he told me that he regretted that because the whole
- 28:47Speaker 4: season was a tribute to Derek Jeter and in a
- 28:52Speaker 4: team sport. He said, it got to the point where
- 28:54Speaker 4: he was almost embarrassed by it because he was going
- 28:57Speaker 4: to play in Milwaukee and they had a and they
- 29:00Speaker 4: were giving him gifts, and he's like, it was all
- 29:04Speaker 4: about me, and the Yankees didn't have a winning season,
- 29:07Speaker 4: and so he said, hey, if you ever know you're
- 29:08Speaker 4: going to retire, announced it the day before you decided,
- 29:12Speaker 4: and then announce it the next day and be done
- 29:14Speaker 4: with it. Don't do it before the season. And so
- 29:17Speaker 4: I always remembered that, and so I kind of knew
- 29:19Speaker 4: halfway through that last season, this is probably going to
- 29:22Speaker 4: be it, but you just don't want to say it
- 29:23Speaker 4: because then it becomes kind of all about you. And
- 29:26Speaker 4: we had a good thing going. And so we got
- 29:29Speaker 4: to the Super Bowl, and of course they asked you
- 29:31Speaker 4: right away that game you kind of want one moment
- 29:35Speaker 4: just to enjoy that game. It was my eighteenth season,
- 29:38Speaker 4: and you know, I had a chance to win the
- 29:39Speaker 4: super Bowl. You want to sort of enjoy that night
- 29:42Speaker 4: and not talk about you right away. So I tried
- 29:44Speaker 4: to pivot and say, I'm just thinking about drinking a
- 29:46Speaker 4: lot of Budweiser tonight. And everybody thought, oh, he's got this,
- 29:49Speaker 4: but I was really I had no relationship. You're not
- 29:52Speaker 4: allowed to have a at the time, a beer relationship
- 29:56Speaker 4: as a current player. I was just I was that's
- 29:58Speaker 4: what I was going to do that night. I was
- 29:59Speaker 4: gonna drink a lot of beer. I was just trying
- 30:01Speaker 4: to get him to stop asking me about retiring.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And then.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Tony Dungee had told me, he said, even if you know,
- 30:09Speaker 4: just take one more month, just to let it sink in.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Don't make some emotional decision. Remember Dick Vermil kind of
- 30:16Speaker 4: won the Super Bowl and he said I'm retiring, and
- 30:18Speaker 4: then he missed it and he came back and coached
- 30:21Speaker 4: the Chiefs, and so I took about a month and
- 30:23Speaker 4: then I decided in March that it was going to
- 30:26Speaker 4: be it. I was thankful for the time I got
- 30:28Speaker 4: to play. Most guys get injured, they oftentimes it's not
- 30:34Speaker 4: their decision they get retired. So to be able to
- 30:37Speaker 4: do it on my terms, I was at peace with it,
- 30:40Speaker 4: and I was thankful for the time that I got
- 30:41Speaker 4: to play and the relationships that I made. I mean,
- 30:46Speaker 4: you know, the equipment manager for Tennessee picked me up
- 30:48Speaker 4: today at the airport, right. I cherished my friendship with him.
- 30:51Speaker 4: The equipment manager for the Colts texted me a picture
- 30:54Speaker 4: of his grandchildren today. And so those are my greatest
- 30:57Speaker 4: takeaways from my time playing not game, not a throw.
- 31:01Speaker 4: The friendships, as you guys know, with your teammates and coaches,
- 31:04Speaker 4: of the behind the scenes. The video director here at
- 31:08Speaker 4: Tennessee for me, is now the video director with the Broncos.
- 31:11Speaker 4: And you talk about a guy that's broken more film
- 31:13Speaker 4: down for me, and you know he and I are friends.
- 31:15Speaker 4: So anyway, uh, you don't get to play anymore, but
- 31:18Speaker 4: you still have those relationships.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Is there not a better group in a franchise than
- 31:23Speaker 2: the equipment guys.
- 31:24Speaker 4: The equipment guys.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Are the number one cats everywhere we go. Guys, my
- 31:29Speaker 2: boy Joey over there, all of them, Yes, air.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Of those guys. I mean, you know they have they
- 31:35Speaker 4: have what I call thankless jobs. I mean nobody, I
- 31:37Speaker 4: mean people only come to them when they need something.
- 31:40Speaker 4: I need lockers exactly I said, so show show appreciation.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I don't know how y'all did your clubhouse dues or whatnot,
- 31:48Speaker 4: but I was real big on, hey, take care of
- 31:50Speaker 4: these guys because uh, they love football and they want
- 31:53Speaker 4: to win. So uh, I still send my my clubhouse dues.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Do you really to the cults and the Roncos? No ship, Yeah,
- 32:02Speaker 4: I'm retired, and so I just uh yeah, because it's like,
- 32:07Speaker 4: you know, they you know it, don't obviously they're not,
- 32:09Speaker 4: you know, not seeing them every day. But I'm just
- 32:11Speaker 4: thankful for for them for what they did for me.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Did you guys do flat rates or did you do
- 32:16Speaker 2: practice squad as this much veterans or this?
- 32:18Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the thing. We tried to kind of do
- 32:20Speaker 4: it different ways. I didn't necessarily like, you know, sort
- 32:23Speaker 4: of the public sign up list where.
- 32:28Speaker 2: It was always Brett Kern for us who would sit
- 32:30Speaker 2: in front of the team. But here's how it's gonna go,
- 32:31Speaker 2: and just kind of label it for everybody. This is
- 32:33Speaker 2: where you're at, this is what you're putting.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Yeah, which is fair, yes, fair right, because you know,
- 32:38Speaker 4: I think young players don't realize what these guys are doing.
- 32:41Speaker 4: They are staying there at midnight washing socks and jockstraps
- 32:45Speaker 4: or whatnot. So uh but it's a good it's a
- 32:47Speaker 4: good tradition and and uh yeah, it's it's funny. I
- 32:51Speaker 4: mean today I've talked to both those guys today, so
- 32:54Speaker 4: uh great, great memories.
- 32:56Speaker 3: A good transition into tier talk or a tear talk.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Oh you gotta you got I did.
- 33:01Speaker 2: But literally as soon as you said tear talk, my brain,
- 33:03Speaker 2: Like Men in Black.
- 33:04Speaker 1: He was talking about.
- 33:05Speaker 3: He was talking about like gift giving our cheer talk
- 33:08Speaker 3: we wanted to do with you is the best, Like
- 33:10Speaker 3: in your career, your top three gifts that you've either
- 33:14Speaker 3: given Oligneman, the team. I don't know how you've gifted
- 33:16Speaker 3: everybody but your top three.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Top three Wow, I guess. I mean you have to
- 33:20Speaker 4: probably ask them, I guess. Uh. You know, Jeff and
- 33:26Speaker 4: Tartlan and those guys. I flew them all to the
- 33:31Speaker 4: Hawaii to the to the Pro Bowl, right, you know?
- 33:34Speaker 4: That was that was kind of one of the first
- 33:37Speaker 4: things that I did, custom made cowboy boots. Okay, I
- 33:43Speaker 4: mean you gotta understand now, this is this is two thousand,
- 33:47Speaker 4: two thousand and one.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you flew the O line to the
- 33:51Speaker 1: to Hawaii and there.
- 33:52Speaker 4: And their spouses. You know, I'm just saying it's like,
- 33:56Speaker 4: I mean mahomes like that, they're like cooler things available
- 34:01Speaker 4: now at least I guess right. And so mom was
- 34:03Speaker 4: from the hard cowboy boots, custom made suits, overcoats, you know,
- 34:08Speaker 4: like always something fitted, you know, bring the guy in
- 34:12Speaker 4: electronics TVs. But it wasn't like it wasn't a it
- 34:17Speaker 4: wasn't a Christmas gift like it was you had to
- 34:20Speaker 4: have blocked well gift. Like one year two thousand and one,
- 34:23Speaker 4: we didn't make the playoffs and my left guards like
- 34:28Speaker 4: with no gift. This year, I'm like, there's no playoffs.
- 34:32Speaker 4: You know you ever seen Team Wolf, No Wolf, no
- 34:34Speaker 4: part you know, no blocking, no gifts. So but like
- 34:39Speaker 4: the rules change. I mean, you know, Tarat Glynn at
- 34:42Speaker 4: one point was making my left tackle was making I
- 34:46Speaker 4: don't know, like twelve million a year. Used to be quarterback,
- 34:48Speaker 4: take care of the poor old offensive line on the
- 34:52Speaker 4: offensive line and they're making banks. They're like, yeah, god bless,
- 34:55Speaker 4: Like what is this watch? I mean right, this is
- 34:57Speaker 4: not it's not even the best role x out there.
- 34:59Speaker 2: This is right, Yeah, offensive linemen Offenseimemon gotta get paid.
- 35:03Speaker 2: That's a good that's a good call.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Was there a how about this starting on line?
- 35:08Speaker 4: No, I took care of all of them. Okay, here,
- 35:10Speaker 4: I took care of the wingman. Uh, you know, the
- 35:12Speaker 4: practice squad guys, and yeah, then you start spreading out
- 35:15Speaker 4: you got the tight ends, uh, receivers and so yeah,
- 35:18Speaker 4: like I felt like, uh, I tried to show, you know,
- 35:21Speaker 4: my appreciation for all those guys because you know, you're
- 35:24Speaker 4: you know, sometimes receiving some of the awards or whatnot,
- 35:27Speaker 4: but those are the guys that were making it, making
- 35:29Speaker 4: it happen. You know.
- 35:30Speaker 3: I'm walking over to Peyton's locker, like, hey, you got
- 35:32Speaker 3: anything for your boy?
- 35:33Speaker 2: For linebackers? Yeah, maybe for white middle linebackers.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Yeah, oh that reminds me. No, never, never, never crossed over.
- 35:41Speaker 1: We had not for pet Anger.
- 35:42Speaker 2: We had we had josh Allen and we talked about
- 35:46Speaker 2: going to an empty situation. There's one middle linebacker that
- 35:49Speaker 2: you know is a liability and coverage he goes out
- 35:52Speaker 2: with your running back. Josh An called it a milk check,
- 35:55Speaker 2: white guy.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I see him. That's why I'm going with I'm staying
- 35:59Speaker 1: in the box there. Yeah, no, no, no, you it
- 36:03Speaker 1: was it.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Did you ever have like a hey, listen over, white
- 36:07Speaker 2: guy out here. We got to take advantage of this
- 36:08Speaker 2: poor soul.
- 36:09Speaker 4: It's funny. I mean, I think Zach Thomas a bunch
- 36:12Speaker 4: and that was kind of thing we always sick because
- 36:14Speaker 4: he was always in the middle. We were always like,
- 36:16Speaker 4: you know, I'm not sure if he can if he
- 36:19Speaker 4: can cover can we.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Just can we get him outside the get him out there?
- 36:23Speaker 4: And he was just what you said. He was so smart.
- 36:25Speaker 4: He never put himself and that.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you gotta know your weakness and checked out.
- 36:30Speaker 4: He's like, no, no, you sending the sam out there?
- 36:33Speaker 4: The wheel out there? Yeah, couldn't. We could never get
- 36:35Speaker 4: him in that spot. And maybe look he was a
- 36:38Speaker 4: stud player, so he probably could have covered him. But
- 36:40Speaker 4: so we'll never know.
- 36:41Speaker 2: I guess no milk checks you. You talk about the
- 36:45Speaker 2: gift giving is great. But one thing that I've always
- 36:47Speaker 2: appreciated you for with some of the clips I would
- 36:49Speaker 2: see about pranks you would do. You'd want to pull,
- 36:51Speaker 2: boil you empty the little thing. Do you have any
- 36:53Speaker 2: like top pranks you ever put on guys in the
- 36:55Speaker 2: locker room at you were like, man, I've done it.
- 36:58Speaker 4: Just you know, I mean training camp, everybody had golf carts.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Coaches had golf carts. We were always trying to get
- 37:03Speaker 4: those moved, you know into like there was a little
- 37:06Speaker 4: pond in the middle of the training can that had
- 37:08Speaker 4: a little platform out there. We got the golf carts
- 37:11Speaker 4: moved out on that one time, big trash can full
- 37:17Speaker 4: of water leaned against the door in the dorm rooms
- 37:21Speaker 4: on the last night or training camp when their bags
- 37:25Speaker 4: are packed and their luggage should be on the floor
- 37:29Speaker 4: right which you know, oh yeah, last night, last night.
- 37:32Speaker 4: I can't. You gotta be last night. They gotta be
- 37:34Speaker 4: packed because we'd say practice in the morning. I kind
- 37:36Speaker 4: of get up and say, guys, practice in the morning.
- 37:37Speaker 4: I'm telling you you don't want to get on the road.
- 37:39Speaker 4: So you know, I just go ahead and pack up tonight.
- 37:41Speaker 4: It's a nice veterans And you lean that trash can
- 37:45Speaker 4: against that door, you know, about eleven thirty after bed checking,
- 37:50Speaker 4: you just you know, bang on that door hard. And
- 37:53Speaker 4: they opened that door and it's just a tidal wave,
- 37:56Speaker 4: the flood coming in. And like I said, you know,
- 37:59Speaker 4: if it only it's their dorm, it's not really good.
- 38:01Speaker 4: But when he gets that luggage. Oh yeah, they're nice
- 38:04Speaker 4: luggage that they've had. They got their picture with their
- 38:06Speaker 4: girlfriend probably on top of the bag. It's ruined. It's
- 38:13Speaker 4: trying to think. Uh. You another guy, guy in Denver
- 38:17Speaker 4: who had a uh had a picture of his girlfriend
- 38:24Speaker 4: in his room. I think it was like body paint
- 38:26Speaker 4: of her, you know, like I'm just it was an
- 38:29Speaker 4: interesting picture to have in training camp. And we got
- 38:33Speaker 4: it somehow, and we had a security you know, you know,
- 38:37Speaker 4: you have security on the floor right and like these guys,
- 38:40Speaker 4: you know, they take naps like you know, eleven o'clock,
- 38:42Speaker 4: And we put that picture like on the security guard's lap,
- 38:46Speaker 4: like as he was sleeping, and that kind of caused
- 38:48Speaker 4: a little stir. But the player like, why does the
- 38:51Speaker 4: security guard have a my girlfriend and body paint? So uh,
- 38:55Speaker 4: anything to keep you know, keep things loose, you guys
- 38:58Speaker 4: know the grind of train any camp, so just to
- 39:02Speaker 4: make things fun. But yeah, I miss that. I haven't
- 39:04Speaker 4: put a trash can full of water in a hotel room.
- 39:10Speaker 4: You want to mess with Eli Eli's Eli's got some
- 39:13Speaker 4: got some prank game. He's big with the cell phone.
- 39:16Speaker 4: His go to move for years was he could change
- 39:20Speaker 4: your settings you could change the language on your phone.
- 39:23Speaker 4: He'd like say, hey, well let's get a picture, you know,
- 39:26Speaker 4: and and uh, I'll take it of YouTube first. And
- 39:29Speaker 4: he's taken your picture, and he changes your phone to Chinese.
- 39:32Speaker 4: And now you can't get it out.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Now you can, you can't figure it out.
- 39:37Speaker 4: Yeah, in general and settings are in Chinese. And now
- 39:40Speaker 4: his go to he is is a thing called text replacement.
- 39:43Speaker 4: The feature on your phone would be anything you text
- 39:46Speaker 4: often that's long worded, your address, your email, Hey, what's
- 39:51Speaker 4: your email? You know? Text replacement. If you put you know, p,
- 39:55Speaker 4: it auto corrects to your email. But see it autocorrects
- 39:59Speaker 4: to your Well, you can make whatever you want to
- 40:03Speaker 4: mean whatever you want. So he changes the word yes
- 40:10Speaker 4: on my phone to I just sharded okay. And so
- 40:17Speaker 4: when my wife says, hey, are you going to be
- 40:20Speaker 4: home for dinner? You know, quickly yeah, so she says, actually,
- 40:24Speaker 4: she's like, oh, I'm so sorry, are you okay? I'm like,
- 40:27Speaker 4: what what just happened? So yeah, anyway, respect that's a
- 40:31Speaker 4: good one. Don't mess with him.
- 40:33Speaker 2: That is a solid one.
- 40:36Speaker 1: What about this episode to bring you let's lock in?
- 40:40Speaker 1: They taped it, They taped it smart move, smart Move.
- 40:43Speaker 3: You guys have had so much success with the maning
- 40:45Speaker 3: cast on all productions and everything else. Is there anything
- 40:48Speaker 3: that is there something that you guys are doing different
- 40:50Speaker 3: this year that people can look forward to this year.
- 40:52Speaker 4: We were talking about him earlier. Bill Belichick is gonna
- 40:54Speaker 4: be a permanent first half guest, permanent in every game
- 40:58Speaker 4: that we're doing this year, to talk about the defense.
- 41:01Speaker 4: We got Niners Jets first game. He'll come on and
- 41:04Speaker 4: talk about, you know, the three things that the Jets
- 41:07Speaker 4: are gonna have to do to stop Purty, you know
- 41:10Speaker 4: what the Niners gonna have to do to stop Aaron Rodgers.
- 41:13Speaker 4: He'll be able to talk about, you know, maybe some
- 41:15Speaker 4: coaching decisions that might happen. Look, I don't enough people
- 41:20Speaker 4: have gotten to hear Belichick's brilliance, right. He never shared
- 41:24Speaker 4: with everybody. His players know. I played for him in
- 41:26Speaker 4: two Pro Bowls. I have a sense of it. But
- 41:29Speaker 4: we've had rehearsals. I come away as a smarter football
- 41:33Speaker 4: fan after listening to him, and he's witty and he's dry.
- 41:37Speaker 4: He couldn't tell in the rehearsal when we were live
- 41:40Speaker 4: and when we weren't a couple of times so some
- 41:42Speaker 4: of the things he said when we were live and
- 41:45Speaker 4: he thought we weren't were great, and like, if we
- 41:47Speaker 4: could just get that a little bit, HELI I could
- 41:49Speaker 4: just trick him, like, Bill, we're not live, what do
- 41:51Speaker 4: you really think right now? So I don't know if
- 41:53Speaker 4: we'll do that to him as a rookie prank, but
- 41:55Speaker 4: I'm excited about that because he's Look, he's a brilliant
- 41:59Speaker 4: football mind, and I think viewers will have the benefit
- 42:02Speaker 4: of hearing from him and Eli and I looking forward.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Plus he doesn't like Eli because Super Bowls making fun
- 42:09Speaker 4: of Eli's encouraged here. So it should be a fun.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Year, dude. That's that's gonna be awesome.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Is there anything over these first few years that you
- 42:16Speaker 3: kind of look at and you're like, we need to
- 42:18Speaker 3: get better in these areas because obviously it's a new thing.
- 42:20Speaker 4: No, we do a study in the off season, just
- 42:23Speaker 4: like you do when you're playing. And look, we have
- 42:26Speaker 4: those these guests on We've learned that when we're interviewing
- 42:30Speaker 4: a guest about why they love football and a big
- 42:33Speaker 4: play happens, we've got to cut him off or her
- 42:37Speaker 4: off and say, hey, hold that thought. I got to
- 42:39Speaker 4: tell you what Aaron Rodgers just did here. He just
- 42:42Speaker 4: checked to a wide receiver screen verse cover zero and
- 42:45Speaker 4: they just gashed the riders. Eli and I weren't doing
- 42:48Speaker 4: that enough because they want to be rude. We don't
- 42:50Speaker 4: want to interrupt y'all. But the fans have kind of
- 42:52Speaker 4: spoken in our little study that we did, and they said, hey,
- 42:56Speaker 4: we want to hear about the big plays that happened.
- 42:59Speaker 4: And Belichick's going to be a first half guest, and
- 43:02Speaker 4: then maybe just have two guests in the second half.
- 43:05Speaker 4: Try to have one former player or a current player,
- 43:09Speaker 4: and then maybe one celebrity. Maybe just to have enough,
- 43:13Speaker 4: you know, a football discussion in the fourth quarter, and
- 43:15Speaker 4: then maybe one celebrity because look, the show it's supposed
- 43:18Speaker 4: to be different than the main broadcast, right. They don't
- 43:21Speaker 4: want just me and Eli talking, so we have to
- 43:24Speaker 4: be different. Those are our instructions. So we think, uh,
- 43:27Speaker 4: you know, being sure the guests are dialed into the game,
- 43:31Speaker 4: and being sure we're always talking about what's going on
- 43:33Speaker 4: in the game. So and then if Eli would just
- 43:35Speaker 4: stop making forehead jokes. It's been four years, it's it's
- 43:39Speaker 4: it's expired.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Got to find new materials.
- 43:41Speaker 4: The yeah, you keep going back to the same stuff.
- 43:43Speaker 4: So those are a couple of things we want to work.
- 43:46Speaker 1: On a couple of things.
- 43:47Speaker 2: I know you're out of time, and I just want
- 43:49Speaker 2: to say thank you. This has been so awesome. The
- 43:51Speaker 2: stories have been amazing. I want to let you know
- 43:53Speaker 2: that we are also available every Monday, anytime.
- 43:56Speaker 4: Maybe. Yes, we have repeat guests.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Yeah, in a pinch.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Just know that the boys got you.
- 44:03Speaker 4: You were voted uh high in our off season study.
- 44:06Speaker 4: People appreciate it with the bust and bump, the stories.
- 44:10Speaker 1: The rating, a little painting at the end.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Yeah, see here there was a big jump here in
- 44:14Speaker 2: week eleven. That's get the pain we got.
- 44:17Speaker 1: No, we never got the pain the hang on?
- 44:20Speaker 4: Did we get the instagrams on the Instagram?
- 44:22Speaker 1: I was gonna say we got instagram the class.
- 44:25Speaker 2: But thank you, thank you for taking the time. Seriously,
- 44:27Speaker 2: this was awesome. We've wanted to get you on the
- 44:29Speaker 2: show for a long time. We appreciate you. You're a legend.
- 44:32Speaker 4: No, no, really are bro.
- 44:34Speaker 3: My dad's gonna be fired up at the cafeteria in
- 44:37Speaker 3: high school. I battled to the death for you. But
- 44:41Speaker 3: once Tom got a couple more, It's kind of like
- 44:43Speaker 3: but I'm talking every year. I'm like vein coming out
- 44:45Speaker 3: of my neck. I like it, but the boys got
- 44:49Speaker 3: your back. Bro, thank you so.
- 44:49Speaker 4: Much as thank you appreciate it. Thanks.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Thanks at
