- 0:00I made this game for you.
- 0:01It's called Rich Move or Broke Move.
- 0:03I love that.
- 0:04Oh my God, what a great game.
- 0:06I'm so in right now.
- 0:07So I will give you a scenario and you tell me if it's a rich move or broke.
- 0:10Still lives with his parents at 45 because he says paying LA rent is throwing money away.
- 0:16That first one is really tough.
- 0:18I would have to say rich.
- 0:19Rich move.
- 0:20Really?
- 0:21You're dating a man who earns $500,000 a year.
- 0:24He drives a 10 year old Toyota, flies economy and wants you to do the same because he plans to retire at 50.
- 0:30100% R.
- 0:32I have a rule.
- 0:33If it's under six hours, I fly economy.
- 0:35Really?
- 0:36Yes.
- 0:36And I have money to buy a business class ticket.
- 0:38I refuse.
- 0:39Never jeopardize your financial future for a man.
- 0:41Ever.
- 0:42That's exactly it.
- 0:45Before we leave, we always like to play a game with our guests.
- 0:49You are up for it?
- 0:50I am up.
- 0:51All right.
- 0:52Okay.
- 0:53I made this game for you.
- 0:54It's called Rich Move or Broke Move.
- 0:56I love that.
- 0:57Oh my God, what a great game.
- 0:59I'm so in right now.
- 1:01And you, I know, will be so good at it.
- 1:04Okay.
- 1:04Okay.
- 1:04So I will give you a scenario and you tell me if it's a rich move or broke.
- 1:07Okay.
- 1:09Number one, your boyfriend makes $150,000 a year, has no debt, maxes out his retirement accounts and still lives with his parents at 45 because he says paying LA rent is throwing money away.
- 1:22Rich move or broke move?
- 1:24Oh, you made that.
- 1:25That first one is really tough.
- 1:30I would have to say rich move.
- 1:32Rich move.
- 1:32Really?
- 1:33Is it just because he's not throwing rent money away?
- 1:36He's not throwing money.
- 1:37He's thinking about the future.
- 1:38He's not concerned about what people think.
- 1:42He's living with his parents and he doesn't give a shit what people think.
- 1:45He's like, you can laugh at me all you want, but I am going to be the one on the yacht when I retire.
- 1:51And you're going to be living in a one bedroom apartment.
- 1:53Yes.
- 1:54So I'm going to say I don't love living with.
- 1:57With your parents.
- 1:58Right, right.
- 1:59And hoping that if you guys get married he will have money to get you a house.
- 2:04But he probably will because he's saving money living with his parents.
- 2:06Yeah.
- 2:07Rich move.
- 2:08Okay.
- 2:08Rich move.
- 2:08Okay.
- 2:09And it's the mindset's important.
- 2:10It's you in the head.
- 2:11It's about the mindset.
- 2:13Very important.
- 2:14Okay.
- 2:14A man takes you to a fantastic restaurant on the first date, he picked it, made the reservation, and when the check comes, he uses a two for one dining offer.
- 2:24He specifically chose the restaurant for rich move or broke.
- 2:31Oh, my God, these are awesome.
- 2:35Rich move, really?
- 2:37Okay, okay.
- 2:38Even though he might not get laid that night.
- 2:39Yes.
- 2:40It's still a rich move.
- 2:42Again, think.
- 2:43Think of it this way.
- 2:44You always want to think of it this way.
- 2:45Okay?
- 2:46He's.
- 2:46First of all, he's not asking you to pay.
- 2:49He's paying.
- 2:50Right.
- 2:51And he's not blowing money.
- 2:54He's not blowing money.
- 2:57Anytime someone isn't blowing money, I think you.
- 3:01Except for certain, certain situations, it's a rich move because he's.
- 3:06Again, he's like, hey, I have two for one.
- 3:09Why not use it?
- 3:11Let's do it.
- 3:12Okay.
- 3:12Could be mean money for a nicer.
- 3:14Diamond ring in the future.
- 3:16That's what I'm saying.
- 3:17That's a man that cares about his money.
- 3:19Okay, but.
- 3:20Okay, let me ask you this.
- 3:21What is the line between somebody who's smart with their money like that, but too cheap?
- 3:26Like so.
- 3:27So let me tell you the line.
- 3:28The line is this.
- 3:30You go out to dinner with someone and they itemize everything on the bill and they say, you have the Coke for $2.
- 3:35I had the whatever for $1.
- 3:37Your.
- 3:37Your drink, you know, you're.
- 3:39That's cheap.
- 3:41That's cheap.
- 3:42Because that's no longer about putting away money.
- 3:46That, that, that is, that is just someone that wants to control money.
- 3:51Right.
- 3:51And that's a cheap move.
- 3:53Yes, right.
- 3:54So that, that's where you'll, you'll see the line.
- 3:57It's not that.
- 3:58He is, you know, a person who wants to save for their future.
- 4:03Okay.
- 4:03Who wants to save for their future, is not a broke person, but a person who wants to control the money and just doesn't want to do anything.
- 4:11And it's just like, you know, oh, no, I don't want.
- 4:14I don't.
- 4:14I don't want that ice cream because I, you know, I can't aff.
- 4:18Right.
- 4:18Just like, come on, dude, like, live a little, you know, like, get it together.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:22Okay.
- 4:24Your husband makes three times what you do and pays 75% of the household expenses.
- 4:30But because he's paying more, he believes he should have the final say on major purchases.
- 4:36Rich move or broke move?
- 4:37Oh, broke move.
- 4:38Okay.
- 4:39Absolutely, absolutely.
- 4:40Broke move.
- 4:41Broke move.
- 4:41Should it be then equal to make decisions like that?
- 4:44Yes, absolutely.
- 4:46The decisions should be equal.
- 4:48I think, I think in a home now, I always say, when you're talking about how much someone contributes to the finances, you should contribute the same amount, the percentage.
- 4:59The same percentage into the pot.
- 5:03Meaning, like so whatever dollars you need to live, right.
- 5:08You figure out how much that is.
- 5:10Let's say it's $1,000.
- 5:13Let's, let's just say it's $1,000 dot.
- 5:14Okay.
- 5:16Depending if he makes four times more than you.
- 5:20Right.
- 5:21You contribute the same percentage of your income to that.
- 5:24So if you need $1,000, okay, so he can, he contributes $750 and you contribute 250.
- 5:33Okay, but it's the same percentage.
- 5:35It's the same percentage allocation.
- 5:37I see, I see.
- 5:38Okay.
- 5:38So you're contributing the same amount, the same percentage of your salary and into it.
- 5:43So that makes it even.
- 5:44Okay, good point.
- 5:46Your partner wants a prenup, which you're completely fine with.
- 5:50But his prenup says that whenever each of you earns during the.
- 5:53Whatever each of you earns during the marriage remains entirely separate.
- 5:57Even if one of you stops working to raise kids.
- 6:01Well, no, that's absolutely a broken move because that's not fair.
- 6:04Right.
- 6:05Because you're not earning anything, so you're not going to keep anything and he's going to keep all the money.
- 6:09Right?
- 6:10Right.
- 6:11I think, you know, there was something I was reading that said like, women, I think when they stay home to raise kids, that's at least, I don't know, $300,000.
- 6:19Like it's equivalent to like CEO position.
- 6:22Basically try to hire someone to cook, to clean, to take care of the kids, to do all the stuff in the house that people don't understand.
- 6:30That's.
- 6:30That's work.
- 6:31That's work.
- 6:32That is so much work.
- 6:33Yep.
- 6:34You're dating a man who earns $500,000 a year.
- 6:37He drives a 10 year old Toyota, flies economy, doesn't buy design or anything, and wants you to do the same because he plans to retire at 50.
- 6:46Rich move.
- 6:47Oh, rich move.
- 6:48Okay, 100% rich move.
- 6:50So what about the finer things?
- 6:52Well, okay, you can have the finer things later in life.
- 6:55Okay.
- 6:55He wants to make sure that you guys are set before you blow your money.
- 7:00And that's okay.
- 7:01Like, I have a rule.
- 7:03And I'm, you know, luckily very financially well off.
- 7:05But I have a rule that if it's under six hours, I fly economy.
- 7:10I don't even fly comfort.
- 7:11Oh, really?
- 7:12You'll go straight economy in the back.
- 7:14Flying to New York?
- 7:16Really?
- 7:17Yes, that is my rule.
- 7:18That, that is my rule.
- 7:19And I have money to buy a first class ticket.
- 7:23I have money to buy a business class ticket.
- 7:25I refuse.
- 7:26Okay, what about the things?
- 7:28Because, you know, we as women.
- 7:30Yeah.
- 7:30Sometimes there's a lot of upkeep, right.
- 7:32We get hair done, we get nails done.
- 7:33We get.
- 7:34Do botox.
- 7:34We do like some people do facelifts.
- 7:36Like, it's.
- 7:37There's a whole gamut that men are not spending money on as much.
- 7:41I mean, maybe they get their nails done and get a massage or something, but, you know, it just to even be a woman sometimes is more expensive.
- 7:48It is.
- 7:49So what do you say to that?
- 7:51Well, I say that, you know, upkeep is great, but you have to still upkeep within your means.
- 7:57You really do.
- 7:58I mean, it's like I know so many women that, that blow thousands and thousands of dollars every two months just on hair extensions.
- 8:06Oh, right.
- 8:07Yeah.
- 8:07I mean, they're.
- 8:08So you gotta pick one.
- 8:10Okay.
- 8:11You know, you can't get the botox and the hair extensions and the lashes and, you know, the brows and the nails.
- 8:17And the nails and, you know, whatever.
- 8:19Tanning and all the things.
- 8:20What I say to people that are trying to budget, I say, I talk about the three treat rule, okay?
- 8:27And this is the rule.
- 8:28You pick three things that you absolutely cannot live without, but you cut out everything else.
- 8:34So for me, let me tell you what that was for me when I was budgeting, okay?
- 8:38That was my gym membership because health is really important to me.
- 8:41One was my nails, because I like to have nice nails.
- 8:44And the other one was I allowed myself to go out to eat once a week because I love food, I'm a foodie.
- 8:51But I cut out vacations.
- 8:53Yes.
- 8:53I cut out vacations.
- 8:54I cut out concerts.
- 8:56Oh, I cut.
- 8:56Yeah.
- 8:57I cut out all.
- 8:58I cut out Botox.
- 9:00I cut.
- 9:01Yes.
- 9:02I.
- 9:02I did not.
- 9:03You were serious about this?
- 9:04I had to be.
- 9:05I was $190,000 in debt.
- 9:08Okay?
- 9:08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:09So you had to, like.
- 9:10I had 116 student loans.
- 9:11I had 30, 000 credit cards that I got from supporting a broke dude.
- 9:15That's why I wrote my book.
- 9:16Yeah.
- 9:16Yes.
- 9:17So I, I had to.
- 9:19But I cut out and I was out of that debt in five years, and I had money saved for my first property.
- 9:25Five years?
- 9:26Yeah.
- 9:27That's amazing.
- 9:28Yeah.
- 9:28So you do have to make those.
- 9:29Adjustments a lot you have to make because you.
- 9:32It's like losing weight.
- 9:33Okay, just think about this.
- 9:34You have been eating and.
- 9:37And I'm analogizing this, right?
- 9:39You've been eating like a person that weighs 600 pounds for years.
- 9:42This is why you're so in debt.
- 9:44Okay.
- 9:45If you want to lose weight, you got to cut it out.
- 9:49Or take a GLP one.
- 9:50Exactly.
- 9:51Take a GLP one.
- 9:52But, you know, you.
- 9:54You either.
- 9:55You know, you either have to bring in more money.
- 9:57Right.
- 9:58Right.
- 9:58Or cut out.
- 9:59That's.
- 10:00That's the only.
- 10:00That's the only way.
- 10:01Yeah.
- 10:02There's no quick fix.
- 10:03Yeah.
- 10:03So, like.
- 10:04Yes.
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:05So I.
- 10:05Roxy, I cut out everything.
- 10:08Everything.
- 10:09I did not buy a piece of clothing I didn't absolutely need to survive.
- 10:13Were you happy?
- 10:15Yes, because I saw the debt coming down.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:17And that's a really.
- 10:18And I was happy because there were three things in my life that I could still do that were important to me.
- 10:24Right.
- 10:25Those were the three things that made me happy.
- 10:27Because if you don't have those three things, you're just going to come right back.
- 10:31You're going to fall because you're going to feel deprived.
- 10:34Right.
- 10:34It's just like that cheat meal.
- 10:36If you're losing weight, you have that cheat meal or a cheat day.
- 10:39So you stay on track, and that's what helps you stay on track.
- 10:41Track.
- 10:42That's a good point.
- 10:43You should always have, like, the three.
- 10:44And maybe those three things change year to year.
- 10:47You know, you can adjust.
- 10:48Yes.
- 10:48And I.
- 10:48I have.
- 10:49For people that are in debt, just so they know, I have a class.
- 10:51It's called Debt Detox.
- 10:52You can get it on my website, and I give you the exact plan that I use to get out of $190,000 in debt in five years.
- 10:59Yeah.
- 11:00So people that are in debt, that's a really great course.
- 11:03You can just take it.
- 11:04You can take.
- 11:04It's online, but it will teach you exactly what you need to do do.
- 11:07So there's even hope for people in midlife that are in debt to be able to get out of it.
- 11:11Most of.
- 11:12Most of my clients taking that course are midlife people.
- 11:15Because.
- 11:16Because people that are young either haven't built up that debt yet or don't understand how bad it is.
- 11:21Right.
- 11:21It's only when you get to midlife, you're like, oh, my God.
- 11:27Yeah.
- 11:27Yeah, good point.
- 11:28Okay.
- 11:29Okay, here we have.
- 11:32Okay.
- 11:33You're 50, recently divorced, and receive a substantial settlement.
- 11:37You use part of it to buy your dream house in cash.
- 11:41Because after everything you've been through, you never want to owe anyone anything anymore.
- 11:45Rich move or broke move?
- 11:47It depends on what you would do with the money if you didn't put it down.
- 11:52Okay.
- 11:53So if you're not disciplined, if that money that you bought the house with in cash.
- 12:00If you were going to blow that money, that's a smart move.
- 12:04Okay?
- 12:04That's a rich move.
- 12:05If you were going to blow that money.
- 12:06However,.
- 12:09If you were going to put that money in the stock market for 10 years, that would be a broke move, and here's why.
- 12:16Because the house that you're buying, you can get a loan on it now.
- 12:216%, right.
- 12:22You're paying 6% interest.
- 12:25That money in the stock market.
- 12:27Excuse me, is going to earn you at least 10%.
- 12:31So do the math.
- 12:33The money is much better off in the stock market than it is parked in your house.
- 12:38Right.
- 12:38Because once it's like in your house, it's in your house.
- 12:40Your house.
- 12:40That's it.
- 12:40That's it.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:42So if.
- 12:43If you're disciplined enough to invest that money into something that's going to make you more than the interest rate that you're paying for your home, then it would be a broke move.
- 12:53But if you're not disciplined enough, it's a rich move.
- 12:58Your boyfriend earns less than you do.
- 13:00He insists on paying for every date because he says that's how I was raised.
- 13:04But doing it means he's saving almost nothing every month.
- 13:08Rich move or broke move?
- 13:09Broke move.
- 13:11Because he's doing it to impress you.
- 13:14Anytime.
- 13:14Really?
- 13:15I think this is what it is.
- 13:16The litmus test is, are you doing this to impress other people?
- 13:20Good point.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:21That's the litmus test.
- 13:23If you're doing this to impress other people, it is almost always a broke.
- 13:28Yeah, it's a bad move.
- 13:29Yes.
- 13:30Yes.
- 13:30You make more than him.
- 13:32You know, there is no reason that he needs to be broke just to impress you.
- 13:36Because this is the way I was raised.
- 13:38You know, that's bullshit.
- 13:40Bullshit.
- 13:41Okay.
- 13:41Your best friend is 200,000 sitting in a savings account because she says I worked too hard for this money to risk losing it in the stock market.
- 13:50Rich move or broke move?
- 13:51Depends on when she needs that money.
- 13:54Ah, okay, so if she needs to take it out sooner rather than later.
- 13:57Yes.
- 13:57It needs to stay in the savings.
- 13:59Yes.
- 13:59If.
- 13:59If she needs it less than 10 years, it's a rich move because she's gonna need that money.
- 14:05If that's.
- 14:06If that's money for her retirement that she's not gonna need into retirement.
- 14:10That is a broke move.
- 14:11Because she's only earning, I don't know, 3 or 4%.
- 14:14Or she could put in the stock market, earn 12%, 10%.
- 14:17Yeah.
- 14:19Okay.
- 14:19You're dating a billionaire.
- 14:21He asks you to sign a prenup never combines finances with you and expects you to continue working and maintaining your own money for the entire marriage.
- 14:29Rich move or broke move?
- 14:32That is a rich move.
- 14:34Okay, that is a.
- 14:35For him or for her?
- 14:36For both.
- 14:37Oh, because.
- 14:39Because a man that cares about you wants you to have your own money.
- 14:45I'm telling you, people think that you marry a billionaire, right?
- 14:50And these billionaires marry bimbo.
- 14:52Some of them do, most of them.
- 14:54And I know a lot of billionaires, most of them marry women that have careers, that are successful, that are doing in their lives because it doesn't turn them on to be with some bimbo who's not doing anything all
- 15:07day.
- 15:08It's such a turn off.
- 15:09They tell me they're like, you know what?
- 15:11I've dated those girls.
- 15:12I have nothing to talk to them about because they haven't done all day.
- 15:16They're like.
- 15:16But my wife, who has a successful career, we talk about her, her job, we talk about our business, we have so many things in common.
- 15:23She's hustling.
- 15:23That's hot.
- 15:25So I actually think, I actually think that that's a rich move now.
- 15:28I mean, you'll benefit.
- 15:29Just because he's not going to want to sit in economy like my ass when I go to New York.
- 15:33Right?
- 15:34That's how he got to be billionaire.
- 15:36Maybe, you know.
- 15:37No, but maybe.
- 15:38Right, no, exactly, right.
- 15:40But you know, it, it's.
- 15:41You have to understand that people, people have money.
- 15:44Unless you inherit the money, right?
- 15:46Unless you and people who inherit it lose it anyways.
- 15:48It's like people who, who win the lottery, they lose that money.
- 15:53I was so shocked to hear that.
- 15:54You never have to work for it.
- 15:55You don't, you don't know the value of the dollar.
- 15:58Right?
- 15:59But people who are billionaires, trust me, it was hard for them to get there and they sacrifice a lot to get there.
- 16:05So they're not going to want somebody that doesn't do anything with their lives.
- 16:10You know who that makes reminds me of now?
- 16:12I don't know in everyday life how he is, but I would think like Mark Cuban or somebody like that would be like smart with his money.
- 16:18No, exactly.
- 16:19Not throwing it away.
- 16:20I love, I actually love Mark Cuban.
- 16:23I met him at Bill Marshall.
- 16:26I was backstage.
- 16:27Yeah.
- 16:28Were you on the show?
- 16:29No, no.
- 16:30My friend is his assistant, so she allows me to go to the show.
- 16:35I was, I was backstage and I met him and he is the smartest, most down to earth dude and is very smart with money.
- 16:44He's very thoughtful.
- 16:45About how to spend it, what to do with it.
- 16:47And yeah, he would not want a bimbo, you know.
- 16:50Again, I don't know anything about his wife, but I'm just saying, like, most of these billionaires.
- 16:55Have you heard of the podcast is called All In?
- 16:58Yes, yes.
- 16:59All In Podcast?
- 17:00Okay.
- 17:00Yes.
- 17:01Every single one of them are married to very successful women.
- 17:03Isn't that amazing?
- 17:04Every single one of them.
- 17:05Yes.
- 17:06They're smart.
- 17:06They get it.
- 17:07And maybe the women aren't working anymore, I don't know.
- 17:10But they were all very successful.
- 17:11They all had careers.
- 17:13They weren't bimbos, and they're still making money.
- 17:16See, I think you need that, like, challenge and you need that, you know, like, you need that person to be able to conversate with you and have.
- 17:22No, absolutely.
- 17:24And.
- 17:24And, you know, if someone's marrying you for your looks, they're going to trade you in 10 years later.
- 17:30I mean, look at Lenny Hochstein.
- 17:33Absolutely.
- 17:34They're just going to trade you in.
- 17:35You think that you're going to be the exception, and you're not.
- 17:38Never, never.
- 17:39You're not.
- 17:40If that is what it's important to a dude, that's going to be important to him ten years down the line when you, when you're older.
- 17:46Now, looking back, what would.
- 17:48What advice, financial advice, would you give yourself 20 when you were 25?
- 17:52Yeah, the financial advice that I would give myself when I was 25 is never jeopardize your own financial Never jeopardize your financial future for a man.
- 18:04Never jeopardize your financial future for a man ever.
- 18:07And we do this a lot as women because we are so quick to give up financial protection because we don't want to start a fight.
- 18:17We don't want to emasculate him.
- 18:19We don't want him to feel a certain kind of way.
- 18:22So we're like, yeah, we'll give you money or forget it.
- 18:25I'm not going to ask about the deed or I'm not going to ask about the accounts.
- 18:28I'm not going to make you feel uncomfortable.
- 18:31And that is how women get screwed.
- 18:33That's exactly it.
- 18:34Like, don't be afraid to say to your man, you know, we have a talk about that.
- 18:39That is the one advice I would give myself.
- 18:41I took out $25,000 of cash out of my credit card to give to a guy I was engaged to that I didn't marry because he was starting a business.
- 18:50I never got that back.
- 18:52Never.
- 18:52And there's nothing you can do to get it back.
- 18:54Right.
- 18:54Never got that back.
- 18:55And then in my 30s, you know, I wrote.
- 18:58Wrote about in my book, I supported a broke dude who sat on my sofa for two years.
- 19:02I was afraid to ask him to pitch him for the light bill because I didn't want to emasculate him.
- 19:07I didn't want him to feel weird.
- 19:09I didn't want him to leave.
- 19:10You know, I was so afraid that he would leave if I asked him.
- 19:14So then that was another $30,000 in debt I got into.
- 19:17Yeah.
- 19:18To keep a man.
- 19:19Never jeopardize your financial position to keep a man.
- 19:22Good point.
- 19:23Fuck that, right?
- 19:24Absolutely.
