Transcript
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: We traded our cleats for clipboards, but we never left the game.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to Cleats and Clipboards, your front row seat for Pennsylvania high school football, brought to you by Sportswire.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: We are through four weeks, Coach Juan.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: It's five teams are still perfect, and week four gave us upsets that shook up the whole board.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Tonight we react to week four, roll out the new Sportswire rankings, and preview a big week five across District 2.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Thanks to the listeners.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: If you're new here, it's a weekly show, Wednesday nights, 9 p.m., part of the Sportswire family.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: However, you found us, welcome in.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: We are on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, anywhere you can find podcasts.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Like, subscribe.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Um who we are if you haven't met us, Coach LaMania here, Lakeland grad, wide receiver, semi-pro, uh coach and player for the old Scranton Eagles, coached at Lackawanna College, Minor League News Football Hall of Fame, and now coaching at Adminton Heights.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: And then my partner in crime, Coach George Hoannitz, a defensive back.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: He may or may not have been able to cover me on that flag football uh field after those uh high school college days were over.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: A Valley View grad, NEPA Sports Hall of Fame, and the head football coach at Honesdale.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Former players, now both coaches on the same side of the microphone.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Coach Hoannitz, we're approaching the halfway point of the season.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: How are you doing this week, sir?
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: Good, buddy.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: How about how fast it goes, right?
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Like I was just thinking right before we came on.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Like you you remember when you started in June having some outdoor workouts and some seven on sevens, and all your seven or uh, you know, your seven on sevens led into week five.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Now you're halfway through.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, it's been an interesting season, I think, so far with uh some of these scores and what we've seen taking place each Friday and Saturday.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I think all of our coaching staffs are having that same conversation as you put in all that work in the offseason, you have the big countdown clock in our field houses, and then before you know it, here we are at the halfway mark.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: But still lots to cover on cleats and clipboards.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, before we get into our our weekly cat uh recap, tonight's show is brought to you by Kleinbauer Mechanical.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: If your boiler is on its last legs heading into winter, now is the time to move.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Through September 30th, Kleinbauer Mechanical is taking$500 off any qualifying new natural gas or propane boiler.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: And for your qualifying UGI customers, there may be an additional$1,500 in UGI rebates.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: That means eligible homeowners could save as much as$2,000 replacing an aging boiler before the cold hits.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: And it's getting a little colder at practice, coach.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: So now is the time to be reaching out to uh Kleinbauer Mechanical here.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Even if it applies, if you're looking to switch your home from propane or oil, call 570-357-7226.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Again, 570-357-7226.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Or message Kleinbauer Mechanical on Facebook to schedule your free estimate.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Beat the cold with Kleinbauer Mechanical.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Coach, here we go now.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: We have a week four recap.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And before we get to it, we're doing things a little bit different this week.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: The Hydra Beth Player of the Week, which we normally have, was not a football player this week.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: So you gotta go over there to sportswire.com, check out Kinley Purley of Lake Lehman.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: You know, we're we're covering soccer over there for the for the player of the week from Sportswire.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So we still gotta keep some recognition on the gridiron here.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna go with the Impact Player of the Week.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: Our Impact Player of the Week, powered by Seraphim Sports Training, is a pair from you bet you you heard it here on Sportswire, Holy Cross, quarterback Luca Barardi and linebacker Chase Rutowski, who carry the Crusaders to their first win of the season, a 27-20 upset of Montrose.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Coach Barardi goes eight for 14, 192 yards, four touchdowns, has two interceptions on defense.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Rutowski caught balls for 128 yards and two scores, forces a fumble, and seals it with a late interception.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Coach, every week I close the show saying some of these calls that you and I make are gonna look smart, and some, well, that's why they play the game.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Coach, your thoughts.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm happy for them.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, we talked early in the year, uh, you know, they had a forfeit early in the year because uh just because of sheer numbers.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: So uh I think as you and I being football guys, I think this uh even though we we picked Montrose to win, uh, you know, I think it's a win for football, right?
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: We got a lot of kids here who uh just want to play the game and they're at a school where numbers are are low and uh they're still putting a football team out each week, and they're uh, you know, their kids are battling, and uh it's a huge win for them in Holy Cross to beat undefeated Montrose and get in the win column.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Could not have, and I know I speak for you too, coach, any more respect for these young men and their coach and staff who, when it is a numbers game and you don't always have the numbers, but you just keep fighting, you just keep competing, you stick together as a team, you believe in each other.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're we're realists too.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: You know, our team sometimes we're underdogs, but we know any team can win on any given weekend when you put it all together.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: And the Holy Cross boys, man, they they really put it together.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: So hats off.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: We'll we'll touch on Holy Cross in a little bit, but but a great win for them.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Coach, again, one more uh note here before we get into the week four recap and an important one before we move on.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: We want to send our best to Old Forge freshman Carlo Pisano.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, the moment following his injury last week, the players from Old Forge and Tunkanic came together united on the field in prayer.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: It went viral and resonated with people across the country.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, our report that we have is Carlos is set for surgery on Friday.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Uh his mom says he's in great spirits, forever grateful for the boys that stood behind beside him on the field that night.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: It was a powerful reminder that some moments are bigger than football.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, we want to stay here at SportsWire, Coach Wanitz and I keep fighting Carlo.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: The entire football community is certainly behind you.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: And uh, Coach, you know, it's it's the one part of the game.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: We know we all sign up for you and I did as players, our players do it, but nonetheless, it doesn't make it easier when you get those serious injuries.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: So I think just the big uh, you know, positive thoughts and prayers out to Carlos and his family, his entire team.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's uh uh you know it's something that happens.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, I've talked about my own boys.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: My both my sons had their ACLs twice, uh, so four ACL surgeries in my house.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: So we've uh you know, we've gone through that with different sports and um you know the injury bug and things like that.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: And as coaches, we've seen it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, one of the great things about sports is that family atmosphere you and I have talked about.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, he'll his band of brothers will stick behind him and his coaches and the whole community, and uh, you know, he'll come out of this better than he was before and uh hopefully never happens again, and he'll he'll have a short memory, be back on the field next year and running around and doing what he does there at Old Forge.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: 100% there.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: And I went through the injury bug with with my guy as well, went through it myself.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: And I think to all the high school athletes, including Carlo, you know, injuries are gonna happen.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And I think it's really important to have a you know wide perspective is hey, we play football as long as we're blessed to play.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: At some point we stop playing.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: But there's there's more to life and other things where again, hopefully you get back out there and play again.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: But if for some reason any athlete doesn't, or you lose a season, or you lose a few games, whatever it is, man, keep that mind sharp.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Keep playing, and um, you know, the support from friends, family, and teammates get you through those tough times.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: So, again, one last shout out for Carlo and uh for his squad.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Keep up keep fighting over there.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: With that, Coach Juan, it's gonna turn it over to you.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: It was a better week for the Hornets.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: I'd like you to start tonight, just walking us through.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Honesdale bounces back 51 to 20 over at Carbondale, move to three and one.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Kick us off.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, recapping week four, how things go over there in your game.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just think uh, you know, we talked about a little bit last week.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: They Carbondale was coming off a big win, and uh, I just thought that my kids played really well.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: We ran the ball really well.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Uh Gabe Duda ran for 267 and five touchdowns, and uh the defense did it, I thought a really nice job.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: We gave up a score the first drive and then uh really uh a score at the very end of the game.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: So the kids did a great job.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Oh well, a kick return touchdown at the end, and then a um like a trick play kind of touchdown at the end.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, the kids just did a nice job.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: I thought they were up for the game, it was physical.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I we talked about this last week.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: I don't think I think a lot of people look at who you play and and maybe think you're not as good.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: You know, we got slammed the week before by North Pocono, but again, North Pocono is gonna be one of the better teams in our area, and I didn't think it was a great matchup for us.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I thought my kids came back, we bounced back.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Like I said last week we told them, forget about that game, let's move on, let's fix what we have to fix and see if we can uh you know get the ship going in the right direction.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: I thought they did a great job of that last week.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Great to see Gabe Duda running well and just an entire team win.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: We always like to say, hey, how do you bounce back?
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: How do you what kind of resiliency do you have?
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: You know, from the week before uh your squad didn't leave anything on the field there, coach.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Nice win there.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna look over now to the still perfect club.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: North Pocono holds off Valley View 27-14.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Valley View came to fight, but North Pocono was just too much there.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Dallas beats Pittston 35-7.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Dunmore keeps rolling, shutting out Lake Lehman 35-0.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Riverside handles, as we've been talking about, a young trail team 27-3.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: My Lakeland Chiefs did me proud.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: They avenged 1995, beating Susquehanna 41 to 19.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Proudia Chiefs, good job.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Coach, five teams remain unbeaten.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Any surprises, thoughts on those games?
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: No, I think we talked about those teams last week.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: You know, they're the ones with the uh a lot of good skill kids coming back.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, a lot of games under their belt.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: You know, all those teams have been deep playoff runs the last couple of years.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: So the kids have a lot of uh extra games, playoff games.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, you'll start to see some of these teams now.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: I think their schedules get a little bit tougher now as you move in.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, deeper past week five.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: So, you know, they'll start running into some better teams, I think, and we'll we'll get a really good picture about where they're at and uh where they'll be.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: But again, we we know Dallas gonna be there, Dunmore's gonna be there, Lakeland's gonna be there.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, these teams are just they're the perennial ones each year, and North Pocono has all their guys back uh defending district champs.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Uh they're big play guys, so they're you know, they'll be there in the end.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: So I don't see that changing much.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: And uh, like I said, I just want to see what'll happen when some of them get tested with some of these better teams how they'll react.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: And the bullseye is still gonna be on them, and we're gonna get to who's who's going after them this week shortly, but still recapping week four.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: The upsets that move the board, Holy Cross.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: We talked about it earlier with the impact players of the week.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Stunned Montrose 27-20 for its first win.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Wilkes Berry knocks off Berwick 22-12 for its first.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I know we had Berwick, I believe, last week, and uh coach dropping Berwick out of the unbeaten chase.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Thoughts on those surprises?
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: That one surprised me, I think, the most because I think that game was at Berwick.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Um, so I'm I'm not sure.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: I know Cleaver had a huge game for Berwick again.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: He's he's uh you know probably one of the better quarterbacks, if not the best quarterback in District 2.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, but again, they just didn't score a lot of points.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Wilkes Bears coming off, was coming off a loss to Valley View, and they, you know, they showed up at Crispin Field.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: And I think, you know, again, we talk about this.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Some of these teams have a lot of good athletes, and you just match up better against certain teams than other ones.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: And uh, you got to hope on a you know that Friday or Saturday that your team could match that, but sometimes you're not able to, and you see these upsets happening in high school.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: They definitely happened this past weekend.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: I know Dave Kurtzman slid into my DMs when uh Holy Cross had that stunning win.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: I had a kind of double take, and then later found out that Burbick was upset.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: So two big upsets this week, and that's why we're gonna keep following the action.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: And for all those high school boys out there, you just never know.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Keep playing, keep what keep grinding.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: First wins also went to Hazleton 17-14 over Crestwood.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Old Forge gets off the snide with a 36-6 win over Tuncanic.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Won Popek rolled 54-0 over a young Scranton team and Wyoming area, beat Mid Valley 38-20.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Thoughts there, coach.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, I'm I'm looking over in the comments, and Doug Nolley said something about Jake Reed not playing.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: But I it I think it comes into play a lot when you see a lot of these teams.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, you you get injuries and you're gonna have some guys out, and you're gonna have some guys dinged up that maybe can't go both ways that normally do.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: And and in a lot of high school settings, you know this.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, you're not three deep at positions, and you're some positions are a little deeper than others.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, a lot of these games you'll start to see, you know, maybe some things evening up when some kids are out.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: And you know, we've talked about Wyoming area losing their quarterback ravine.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: It's been a big, you know, a big switch for them.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: They've had to move some guys, and it's a little bit, you know, tougher sled now.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I think the teams you just said, you know, some of these teams have been hot.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: They've been playing some um, you know, some easier opponents, I think, for the most part.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: And like I said, while Paul Pack's gonna get into their big bulky part of their schedule with DV and Prep and Valley View and North Pocono and um you know the same thing.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Old Forge has had some tough games early.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: They'll start uh getting into their meat of their schedule.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: So I think you'll see a lot of these teams, like I said, in the next couple weeks, you'll get a really true picture about where they're at.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, I don't want to say how bad they are or how good they are, because I don't think you know each week is a little different, but at least you'll get a better look, I think, at uh how far they can go and what they're gonna be able to do moving through the second half of the schedule.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: And you know, the injury bug, something we're definitely gonna keep an eye on.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: You know, some of these injuries you can't control, it's part of the game.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: But then there's that other part, coach.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, we preach all offseason the importance of being in that weight room.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Sometimes kids are balancing a little bit up, you know, other things, playing other sports, but that time in the weight room, this is where it comes in.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Because I think all of our coaches are starting to see a couple more kids on the sidelines towards the end of practice or kind of you know working through something.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: So the the best condition teams are gonna really have an edge here as we get down the stretch.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think you see it even in the NFL and stuff.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, you have to take care of your body.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's a tough sport, right?
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, you're playing a game on a Friday and you gotta, you know, you gotta get yourself ready on Saturday and Sunday and Monday, I think, to get back to work on Tuesday.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: So, you know, the teams are able to do that the best and save kids' legs.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, even even in games like we talk about, and I'm not knocking Scranton, but uh, you know, while Paul Peck plays Scranton, their kids only have to play half.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's a big, you know, that makes and makes a big difference, can pay dividends when you play some of these better teams as you're going uh the next week.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: So we'll see that coming into play, I think, a little bit.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, like I said, I mean I could tell you, even at home still, I do yoga with our kids on Monday.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: We have a uh, you know, a yoga instructor come in and do a lot of stretching, and and for me at least, I think it's made a big difference.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: So you're seeing more and more teams kind of do that, get their kids ready uh in a flow early in the week and try to prevent a lot of injuries.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Coach, I absolutely love that.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: And I didn't see you as a yoga guy.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've known you for a while.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: I don't do the yoga.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: You're pulling out all the stunts here for the boys.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Absolutely love that.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: You know, that there's so much out there, you know, just to get beyond the basic, you know, hey, hammer the weights in the weight room.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: There's so many other ways to take care of the body.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: So that's awesome.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Kudos for you for doing that with the with the program there.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: And coach, you can do some yoga too.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: It won't it won't hurt you there, all right?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Too old for yoga.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Mrs.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Hoannets won't be mad if you're doing a little bit of yoga, all right?
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: And you know, Doug Noldy there mentioned 1994 Jake Reed as well.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember him very well.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: But you know, Doug, we just turned the ball over too much that that game back in the day.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: But I'm not gonna go there right now.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Last bounce back was Abbotton Heights where I was on the sidelines, or actually, I was up in the booth this game here, beat West Granton 29-13.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, it was a must-win, I believe, for the comments, especially rolling into North Pocono this week.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: We'll get to that game.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: My just little two cents, and I turn it over to you because I try to stay out of the Abenton stuff.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: My comments were your coach Rep's comments, a much more physical football program on both sides of the ball this week.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: But I do got to give a shout-out, you know, West Granton uh freshman quarterback Austin Sostri.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Pass the eye test.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Really athletic kid with a bright future.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: They definitely have some athletes over there, coach.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I think we were just a little more physical at home on that game, but thoughts there.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, you and I have talked about this.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: I think it's uh playing that schedule.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, you have to be physical.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: You're gonna run into the you know, prep DV, Valley View, North Pocono.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's a gauntlet.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, Wall and Paul Pack will be physical.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, you have to be able to keep up with that.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: West Scrampton obviously moving up this year into Division I.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be a you know, it's gonna be a little trial by fire to uh you know be able to deal with that each week and deal with the physicality.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: And again, you're not getting uh many weeks off when you're playing that division one schedule.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, it's something they'll have to navigate through.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: But you know, like I said, uh coach has a lot of good athletes there at West.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Um you know, they're they're they're gonna get to a point, I think, where they'll be used to that a little more.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, Abington obviously with the history, the coach has been there for a long time, good athletes, um you know, generation after generation, I think, of people playing there.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, it pays dividends at the end of the day when when you know an upstart plays a team that's been there and done that.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: And Abington's one of those teams I think that can navigate through that and they'll be ready to go this week.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: And uh, if they can keep their physicality, it'll keep them in a lot of games.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Well, we're gonna get to what they have to do this week here shortly.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: We're also in a little while gonna get to the fit of the week.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: I might even have a challenge flag for producer Brad.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Although I I love the swag of the week, and you know, there I'll give a little clue for later.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: There's a Dumore player who's got his team rolling not only on the field but with his drip.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: But producer Brad, just wait.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Um, until then, the updated Sportswire rankings coach, big school top 10, another interesting week.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Penalty flags, challenge flags.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: I got them ready as I always do.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Take us through the big school top ten.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Um, well, the the top hasn't really changed much, obviously.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: We have uh our two undefeated teams on top, North Pocono and Dallas, uh, you know, both with big wins this week, uh, you know, setting a tone, I think, for the rest of the season.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: So they'll be uh those two teams will be tough to beat in in both conferences.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Uh Abington moves up to three.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, big win against West, playing well.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Valley View drops down one spot because of the loss to North Pocono again.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna drop, they can't drop way down the list because North Pocono is going to beat uh pretty much everybody they play, I think.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: Uh Holmesdale moves up to five with their win, uh, you know, stays ahead of Wallon Paulpak.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Uh we beat Wallon Paul Pack at the beginning of the year, so to me, the head-to-head comes into play there.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Uh Berwick loses another one to uh Wilkesbury, which I thought we you and I both talked about this.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: That's a big loss for them.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: Uh uh probably a game that most of the time uh we think they should win.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Delver Valley uh loses at prep or two prep.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Uh so we bumped them down.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: They're sitting at one and three right now.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: Uh Wyoming Valley West with a big win over the weekend, uh, and then West Grant and rounding out the top ten.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Uh and again, more by record, I think what what they have skill-wise, I think they uh fit nicely into that top ten.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: I think the big school top tens, coach, is it's getting very competitive here.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: And I don't have a challenge flag for you.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Maybe for our listeners, I might throw a couple penalty flags.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: I think whether you're from Abington Heights or Valley View, you're probably arguing whether you should be three or four.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: I think that's really tight.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Honesdale and Wall and Popack at three and one probably have their eyes upset of trying to get in there.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: And then we've talked a lot about Delaware Valley and that strength of schedule at one and three.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Do they finally have it started to get rolling now?
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Should they be ahead of Berwick or Wall and Popak?
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Any thoughts there, Coach?
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Any of those penalty flags got to get picked up, or could there be a penalty flag thrown?
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you and I have talked about this a lot.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think if you went head to head with Delaware Valley, they'd probably, and they're gonna go head to head with Valley View, they're gonna go head to head with Abington and North Pocano.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Um, so they're gonna play all those teams.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: But again, you you're one and three.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know they play a tough schedule.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: And again, could Delaware Valley be Berwick?
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Could Delaware Valley be Paw Pack?
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: They're gonna play them.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: Could Delaware Valley beat us at Homestead?
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, you you can look through that, but I think when you start getting into these games where, and I've told you this, if you're losing to District 2 teams, you're getting a little better look of where you're at.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, I just think that's why they fit within, you know, in that realm where they're at that one and three and sitting at that eight spot.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: All good points, and we're gonna watch some really competitive football and see how this fleshes out in the upcoming weeks.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: But now, coach, as we shift from the big schools to the The small school top 10, and I put my penalty flag away, but I might have a challenge flag ready here.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: What do you have?
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Well, we talked about this last week.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: To me, uh, I'm only keeping Dunmore at one because they're undefeated.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: Scranton Prep is really the best team here in these small school top ten.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, just beat Delaware Valley, uh, have played a good non-league schedule.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, Dunmore really hasn't played anybody yet, to be honest with you.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: So, um, and again, I think if you went head-to-head, I think Prep beats Dunmore in a head-to-head matchup.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Uh Lakeland's sitting at three, still undefeated.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: Riverside undefeated at four.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: Um, Wyoming, and again, Lakeland uh is gonna play Dunmore.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Lakeland's gonna play Riverside, uh, Riverside's gonna play.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: So the one, three, and four are all gonna play each other.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Um, five, Wyoming area, another big win this week.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, came back, uh, scored a lot of points.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Uh six, Western Wayne, seven, Lake Lehman.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: I think probably six, seven, eight, and nine and ten could probably all be interchangeable.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Uh Lake Lehman at seven, mid-valley at eight, because Lake Lehman beat Mid Valley.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Montrose with that loss, drops to nine, and then uh Old Forge with a uh you know, a win.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: I think they have that thing moving in the right direction.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: They're getting some guys back from injury, and uh they'll round out the top ten.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Small school is getting super interesting here.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: You get Dave Kerstman's looking right at the top.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: He's I guess you know, agreeing with you there, Coach, saying prep number one, Dunmore number two.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: I know the Bucks out there, that's a tight community.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: That hey, knock us off, they're telling us.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, I'm gonna hold the challenge flag because I might be a little biased with my Chiefs and even Riverside.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: I'm still shouting for the four-and-os there.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: But like you said, these schools are gonna play each other, so there's plenty of time for that to flesh out.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Western Wayne, maybe an argument, you know, over Wyoming area there, three and one.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: But coach, my challenge flag goes for Montrose over there at three and one, all the way down at nine behind Lake Lehman, who's only one and three.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Coach, challenge flag, Montrose should be number seven this week.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: Well, I just think uh, again, the come coming in undefeated and losing the Holy Cross, uh, I think that's a huge loss.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, a team that had didn't have any wins.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Um, and I I just think, like I said, I think if you put Montrose up against six, seven, and eight, I don't think they're, or five really for that matter.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're beating any of those teams head to head.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Um I do, I was just talking to somebody about this today.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: I wish um, and you know this, for years, Dunmore and Scranton Prep always played each other.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: It was kind of like the you know, the big rivalry game, uh, you know, a 3A versus a 2A, which uh, you know, I don't think is that big of a jump.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: So I I really wish the league would start getting together and bringing some of these games back, even you know, the Lakeland Valley View games and things like that.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: I just think with so many teams now going out of the area to find games, and I I don't know if it's really necessary if you just get some of the teams playing each other that always played.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: And um, and and listen, you know this as well as I do.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: You're not getting anything out of playing a team that's 0-10 for the season uh instead of and I think I just think teams are always worried about losing a game, and I think it's stupid the way the playoffs are now.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: You're you know, even when you if you lose to a team that has a lot of wins, you're still getting points.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I'd really like to see some of these teams, you know, in the next cycle, maybe getting back to playing some of these big games on a Friday.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: We could pack a stadium and see two local rival uh rivals playing each other again.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: I love that you said that, coach.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: And you know, well spoken as always, and hopefully your voice is heard at those league meetings and other coaches to bring some of those rivalry games back.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, producer Brad doesn't get mad at me.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: I'll throw the challenge flag out at the league tonight and say, make those games happen.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: You know, it is a shame because coach, I've got I've got less to lose here.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Dunmore and Prep should be playing that Valley View Lakeland rivalry.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, I missed that coach.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, they were the best days, but like you said, like more than anything, it brings those communities together.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: You pack the stands, what an experience you create for those kids.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And it's not that big of a jump, you know, like you're not putting kids at risk or in danger there.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: And you know, you're fine locally quality football, you're not you know, crushing the travel budget there for the school districts.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: I I think those games make sense.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: So yeah, Dan, I just think, and you know this.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, I and I'm not trying to be a jerk to any of these teams by any stretch.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Um, but like, you know, Dunmore is isn't getting anything out of playing Holy Cross.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Like, to me, I I'd rather uh and again, I'd rather see them play a Valley View or a Prep or you know, you're getting a playoff atmosphere for your kids.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: I think you're getting your kids ready for playoff types of games.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and listen, I prep, I I give them all the credit in the world.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: The last and D V's the same way.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: The last couple years, they're playing a tough auto-conference schedule.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: They're starting a year 0-3, or sometimes 1-2, or whatever, and it's not ruining their season by any stretch of the imagination.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Prep started 0-3 last year and kicked the crap out of Berwick in the playoffs.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, for the uh the district playoffs, and then you see D V every year.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, they're in the mix.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: So, um, and you know, when you look at even the small school standings, they're like prep prep's gonna go the next five weeks and play Valley View, D V, Abington, North Pocono, uh, you know, and Dunmore's gonna play Holy Cross, uh Riverside, you know, Amantros, and I just I don't know what, you know, and again, I know people are worried they want to be 10-0 so they can hop around and stuff, but I just don't think it does anything for the game or for you moving on uh when the playoffs come.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: 100% well spoken, coach.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: Hopefully we can make some strides there.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: It just sounds like common sense to me.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: So there's work to be done, but we're gonna enjoy the rest as we go.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Before we get to the week five preview, we've got to talk about the fit of the week, fueled by fit AF Nutrition.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Our sports wire team is watching every Friday night for the best game day fits.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: This week's fit of the week goes to Weston Yannoni of the Dunmore Bucks.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: And Weston, man, you're you're styling over there.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: I think that the colorful duck gloves there, nice Nike fit.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: He's kind of like layered, you know, he's symmetrical.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: He's got you know the band there showing off the biceps, he's got you know the middle tape, the wrist tape, all matching Nike.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Makes the you know protective headgear work there, styling in the Dumb War uniform.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: So great job, Weston.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: You are definitely styling.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: When it comes to your own fuel, check out Fit AF Nutrition Meal Prep and use the code BUX20, B-U-C-K-S 20, to save 20% off your first order of seven meals or more.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: When you win, Weston, it'll be in your DMs there.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: You'll get a special promo code Get Hooked Up, Fit of the Week, fueled by FITAF Nutrition.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: And although he deserves the win, Brad, I mentioned it or uh Coach Juanit's producer Brad.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: The week before they catch the the red, white, and blue salute to service swag up at um Carbondale.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: And I should have gave producer Brad, but look at Abitton's swag last week.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Well, like maybe the maybe the swag isn't for producer Brad, but our kids absolutely they were they went out in their normal uniforms for pregame, and then when they came back to the locker room before we went out, the the jerseys were just there and they didn't even know they were gonna have them.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: They couldn't be any happier there.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: So it was just a really nice touch.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: The patriotic me says, Brad, your sports wire camera person there should have at least put us in contention.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure what happened, but hey, shout out to Weston and Dunmore, though.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Definitely well deserved there.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: From the fit of the week from Fit AF Nutrition over to our week five preview, featured games.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Coach, I'm gonna take us back to Abington here a bit at North Pocono.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Not gonna say too much.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: I'll leave the heavy analysis and the prediction to you because I'm coaching up at Abington.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: But North Pocono is the district standard bearer.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: Unbeaten, comes off a 27-14 win off of good over a good Valley View team, led by Joe Babisky and Cole West.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: I promise you we watched a lot of film of those those guys this week.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Abington is back to 500 with Jaden Englin churning yards, gets a measuring stick game here.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Can the comets hang with the champs?
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Who do you like here?
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Well, I think I just we say this every week.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: I just think until you can beat North Poco, they you gotta give them the, you know, you have to give them the upper hand.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: And I think athletically, they're just they're tough.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, even uh, I talked to a lot of Valley View people last week, they're just um you know, they played a little different game last week.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: They they grind out some drives and kick some field goals, and uh, you know, they had two guys rush for over a hundred yards, quarterback played well, two touchdowns, Zimmerman.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: So um, and defensively, you know, I think holding valley, you know, under a certain uh total is really good for them.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I and listen, I said this to you off camera.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: I think Abington has a little bit more firepower than some of the teams, so they might be able to uh use that a little bit, get some points put up.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: You know, Anglin's been doing a great job for you guys, three touchdowns, two or over 200 yards rushing last week.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: So he's catching the ball, running the ball.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: So I think he's gonna be a tough matchup, but they just have so many athletes that could that put you in so many bad spots.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, we tease each other about playing flag football.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: It's like playing that backyard football where uh you hope your athletes are better than the other teams, and uh North Poconos up to this point have been.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: So until somebody can match up, I just think they're they're you know, they're the top dog, and I'm not sure anybody can beat them uh based on what they have.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: That's definitely the first undefeated team of the week we're talking about with the bullseye on them.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: Abington's gonna have to play a very disciplined game.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: I know Coach Repsus and his staff is putting together the best game plan.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: They know they've got to play at their best.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: Offensive coordinator coach Just Dave's asking me, Coach, when he's coming on cleats and clipboards, by the way.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: He's uh looking for that guest appearance there.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: He's ribbing me a little bit, but it should be a great game at North Pocono Friday, 7 p.m.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Speaking of undefeated, it's another one with a bullseye on their back is my Lakeland Chiefs, Carbondale going to town, unbeaten.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Lakeland, the number three small school, hosts a Carbondale team that coach, you you handled pretty well last week.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: What's your thoughts on this game?
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Well, Lakeland is in the same boat.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: I think they're, you know, all their kids are a lot of their kids are back from last year.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, great season from last year, championship type of season.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, so you know, but we talked about their move at quarterback, and he's done a great job.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: I know they have some uh some players that are kind of banged up, but I just think, you know, again, a lot of athletes you got to deal with.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Carbonale's good, they have a lot of athletes as well.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: I just uh when you have to go to Lakeland uh on grass, um, you know, the wind will be whipping, I'm sure, on Friday night, and they're uh, you know, they're used to that, and their kids do a nice job, you know, in those surroundings.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: And like I said, I just think it's a lot of athletes have to deal with.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I see Lakeland and and really nobody stopped Lakeland yet.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm uh anxious to see if Carbondale's gonna be able to do that.
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: So uh again, same as North Pocono.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Until somebody can stop them, you have to give them the nod.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: So I'm giving Lakeland the nod here over Carbondale.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: I think they match up nice.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Having played at Lakeland, you think I'd be used to that cold in the northeast?
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: It always is a bit colder up there for sure and windy, and I miss hearing those cowbells.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm with you.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: I got the Chiefs there.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: I think they go to 5-0.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Um, we'll see if Carbondale's Francisco Roman could could keep up, keep the pace.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: You never know.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Should be an interesting game.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Carbondale will definitely be coming hungry.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: There's a little bit of a rivalry there, too.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: It's not Lakeland Valley View type rivalry, but there is a bit of a rivalry.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Coach Honesdale at Crestwood, 3-1 versus 1-3, Friday at 7.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: I'll do the predictions here and take you out of this one.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: Uh Honesdale rides the 51-20 win into a road chip against a Crestwood team that has NEPA rushing leader Jake Jekyll, but still sits at 1-3.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: So to me, it sounds like you know, Crestwood just doesn't have enough pieces around Jekyll to be able to build on that great running performance.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: But when you can run the ball, you always got a shot.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Gabe Dude and your Hornets are looking to build.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Again, I'll take the prediction here is taking you out of it coaching their coach, but give our listeners.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: I make the prediction Jose wins, but what's the keys to the game?
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: With something, you know, an inside view for the listeners.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: Well, Crestwood, uh, I've played, you know, I coached against them for so long at Valley View.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: It seemed like there was three or four years in a row we played each other twice during the regular season, and again in district playoffs.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: So I have a pretty good, I think, uh, understanding of their single wing offense and what they like to do.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: But um, they've been in that boat we talked about before.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: They've had a lot of guys out, their quarterback was out for two weeks.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, they've had some linemen out.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: So um that's one of the reasons why I think they're sitting at one and three.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: They just a lot of their pieces haven't been there.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm assuming all their pieces will be back this this week, and I think they'll be a much different team.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, they're physical.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: You're you have to go to Crestwood.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's a good team.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's gonna it's gonna be a big test for us.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, our kids are coming off a high.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: I think we have a good feeling of you know who we are and what we're able to do.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: So uh hopefully we'll be able to do that and stop Jekyll because again, he's they like we run with Duda, they run with Jekyll.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I think it'll be I told my coaches last week at the end of our Carbonal game, the game might be over in 45 minutes because neither team really throws the ball.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: So it might be uh three yards and a cloud of dust, and uh you know, one half will be a half hour, and the other one will be about 20 minutes, and you'll be back on the bus in an hour.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: I can appreciate that.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Definitely two talented running backs that are gonna be on the field.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: It was it was the opposite.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: I think it was maybe two weeks ago.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: I was at a Lackawanna College, the game where I work, and it was throwing the ball and penalties.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: The first half was, I think, three hours.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: The first half.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: So I can appreciate that.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: And that, you know, coach, I think you know, you you saw resiliency in in your squad bouncing back.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Now you got to keep the guard up and make sure you don't let the guard down for a Honesdale team that is traveling to Kick Crestwood, that'll be ready to play.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: So that should be a good one Friday night at seven.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: Also, West Granton two and two, they're gonna look to bounce back after a tough one versus Mike Cometz, but the hill doesn't get any easier to climb versus Scranton Prep 3-1, the number two small school.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: If this game is at Dunmore Veterans Stadium there, prep's rolling, coach, your take.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just think and this is what we talked about before.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: West Granton hasn't played a schedule like this.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be, you know, physical against uh Abington, physical against Prep.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Then you're gonna get the next week.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: It's gonna so uh you have to be able to sustain and and survive each week, and I think it's gonna get tougher and tougher.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: Um, I just think it's a matchup nightmare against Prep.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: They're gonna run downhill, they do a nice job of throwing the ball.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, they had two running backs, uh Jeffers, McPartland, both rushed for over 90 last week.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: So I just think they're a matchup nightmare.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, I think defensively they'll be able to uh hold down West Grant and they've they've played spread offenses before.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: Uh even with Sastre with his, you know, he threw for almost 150 last week, and Colbert's a good receiver for them.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I see prep again, I just think it's too much.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: Uh they have too many athletes, and uh, you know, they've been in this situation before and they're just tough to defend.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, true.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: We're on the same page here, and I think you know, you have to be able to run the ball, you have to be able to stop the run, and especially as it gets colder here in Northeast PA, you gotta be able to run the ball and grind.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I think when you get into states and you get further on, you need that balanced team and you gotta be able to throw the ball.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: But I think just West Granton doesn't have all the pieces for Scranton Prep.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: I think it'll take a uh signature uh performance from Sastra to be able to pull this off.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: But we'll see.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: That's why we they play the games as they say, but a tough one for West Granton going into prep.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Wyoming area two and two at Western Wayne, a ranked small school clash, number five versus number six.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Coach, what do you have here?
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm gonna take West uh Wyoming area.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I just think um, you know, now they kind of have it rolling, I think they have it figured out.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know that again, same thing.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: They've had some kids banged up, and I think they're starting to get a little bit healthier, and you see the changes happening now where you know you see them the first couple weeks and they have some losses.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: But like I said, they played some really good teams early on.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Um, so I just again uh Western Wayne uh struggled uh you know the last couple times playing some decent teams.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, Won Paul Pack took it to them.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, so I I just I just don't know if they'll match up.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: I think Wyoming area is super physical.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: Uh they'll continue to be that way.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: I think they're they're finding their stride offensively.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: And you know, Western Wayne's running the ball really well.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: Uh Ortiz and Swartz have done a great job for them rushing, but uh you know, I just think Wyoming area will be too much, just based on they've played three or four weeks of playoff football already, Wyoming area, and and Western Wayne just hasn't seen opponents like that.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: And I think it uh pays dividends, you start to move to the middle to the end of the year.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you've been in my head since earlier episodes of Cleats and Clipboards, identifying Wyoming area and their strength of schedule.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Again, Wallon Pop back is a team that's got a good running game.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: They've had some success there.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: They're three and one, they're gonna have some confidence at home.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna come out blazing, but I'm with you here.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: I think Wyoming area is a team that could contain that run game, slow them down enough to come out of here with a W.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: But definitely it would be a fun one to watch.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: Delaware Valley, one and three.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: Do they have it rolling now?
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: Versus Wall and Popak, three and one three and one.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: A Wayne Pike rivalry, maybe with a twist here.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: Popak surging 54-0 behind Ed Keysendown, Jake Rafferty, while still ranked Delaware is only one and three and they're desperate.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Coach, how does this play out?
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: This is uh uh I think one of the more interesting games on the schedule because it's uh like this to me is truly a toss-up game and a big question mark game because Delaware Valley 1-3, but again, they've played a decent schedule.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Uh while and Paul Pack three and one, and they've played kind of a topsy turvy schedule.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: So um, I you know, I think this could be a this might be one of the better games of the week.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm gonna take Delaware Valley just because I thought it was impressive last week that they held prep to 14 points.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna say defensively, uh their defense right now is is a little bit ahead of their offense.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think they'll be able to defensively, I think they'll be able to kind of keep up with Wall and Polpak.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Um, if they can get a little bit of offense going, I think it'll cause Polpak fifth.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm gonna take Delaware Valley, but I think it's gonna be a close game.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: And this is a game, like I said, I'm circling, so I'm really interested to see how this game ends up.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: I've been going back and forth a little bit.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: I really wanted to pick the upset tonight.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: And I see Dave in the chat, he's also a Delaware Valley, but uh I I do think I you know that battle-tested Del Val team, they're they're playing competitive football every week.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: I think they edged this one out.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be really close.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm gonna go Delaware Valley by three here.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a close game, but I'm taking Delaware Val.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: Wilkes Bear 1-3 at Dallas 4-0.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna be in agreement on all the spotlight games today here.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Again, just looking at the Bullseye teams, Dallas 4-0.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Wilkes Bear is fresh though, upsetting Berwick, still armed with NEPA leading passer, Declan Greger, who, you know, we didn't think it'd be enough last week, but it was versus Berwick.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: But an unballowed, unbeaten Dallas team is humming.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: Coach, who do we like?
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm gonna take Dallas, but I'm gonna throw this out there.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: They usually have a hiccup at some point in all their seasons.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: Even their teams that have been really good, uh, there's always some kind of upset that they, for whatever reason, I don't know why it happens, but they always seem to get upset by somebody.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know if Wilkesbury can do it, but I am impressed with Wilkesbury beating Berwick last week.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: So I think they'll um offensively they'll be able to do some things.
- 42:04SPEAKER_02: But my concern all the time when you play Dallas, you got to play good defense.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, all the times I coached against them at Valley View, like when we've been able to beat them, you have to play good defense um and get them out of their game plan a little bit and kind of get them off script.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Um, and teams haven't been able to do that yet.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: And I'm not sure if Wilkesbury will be able to do that, but uh so I'll take Dallas in this game.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: I just think Pit Cavage and Geskier are uh really good.
- 42:29SPEAKER_02: Defensively, they've only given up 44 points in four games.
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: Uh so defensively, they're really, really good as well.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: Um, but again, Wilkesbury, big win over Berwick, but can they do it two weeks in a row?
- 42:41SPEAKER_02: And they have to go to Dallas.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: So uh I just think it's it's a lot to it's a big hill to climb, and I'll take Dallas in this one.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: But don't be surprised if something's our ups that special over here.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: You heard it here first.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: I like how you call that because those things often do happen, they've kind of become a trend, and uh and I kind of feel that this Dallas team is just a little different this year, but you know, to your point, it's well received.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: I found out the hard way in our game at Abington, you know, you you've got to be able to stop them on defense, and and we weren't able to do it on that day.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Um and I think even though Declan Gregory, I mean, he could sling it, I just think Dallas controls the game so well in the run game and on offense.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna keep Declan Gregory off the field a little bit and um you know have enough firepower there.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: I'm with you, Dallas, especially at home, I see them going to 5-0.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: Coach, we highlighted some good wins there.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: There's always so many games to cover, but we want to touch on them all.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go rapid fire now through the rest.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Give us your your your quick thoughts here.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Riverside 4 0 goes to Old Forge, who's 1 3.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: Unbeaten Riverside and NEPA scoring leader, Braden Rose.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: Visit Old Forge off its first win.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Coach, do you remember this game used to be?
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: They'd be like four deep at the fence.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: You know, both teams will be undefeated.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: They'd be playing each other towards the end of the year.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: Um, this is one of the like the big games you'd wait for all the time.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: Now, again, Old Forge is struggle a little bit, but um, you know, they're they're rivals right next to each other.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: I I don't think uh Old Forge will be able to stop Brain and Rose, so I'm gonna take uh Riverside there.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: But Old Forge, I think, is getting a little bit better, and uh another game that I think might be a little bit closer than people think.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: Old Forge couldn't get a better time to get that first win going into this rivalry game as you allude to.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: Valley View, 2-2 at a young 0-4 Scranton team that's struggling.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Valley View, more than anything, are looking a rebound from North Pocono.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, how does this play out, Coach?
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: I think you're probably heavy on Valley View.
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, uh, I was doing a little math.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, Scranton's been outscored 158 to 6 in their first four games.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: So uh defensively, they're not playing real well.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: And Valley View's gonna obviously be able to move the ball a little bit, rushing, and they've done a pretty good job throwing the ball.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I don't see this as really being a close game.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: I see Valley View uh, you know, doing what pretty much everybody else has done scored a lot of points.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: Um, I think Scranton, though, has been getting a little bit better.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: I hope they continue to do that.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Uh stay with it and you know, at least get in there, uh, keep getting a little better each week and uh keep putting up the fight.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Similar to he said to Holy Cross.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, you just gotta stay together and you know, have pride.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: You gotta play that game no matter what.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: Play it with all you have, Scranton.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: See what happens this weekend.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: Wyoming Valley West, two and two.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: Travel to Nanacoke one and three.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Wyoming Valley West keeps building after beating Hanover.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Nanokoke chases a second win, coach.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh I'm gonna take Valley West in this one.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: Malik Campbell's been awesome for them, 164 yards rushing last week, two touchdowns.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, he had four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: Their quarterback, Eastman, 123 yards passing touchdown.
- 45:53SPEAKER_02: They have a really good offensive attack.
- 45:55SPEAKER_02: I don't think Nanacoke will be able to keep up with that.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm gonna take Valley West big in this game.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: Pitston area one and three at Hazleton, one and three.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: Two one and three teams that both need it.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: Hazleton coming off its first win.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: What do you have here, Coach?
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, another game.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, Pitston was without Santino Capitano, their quarterback, and pretty much Mr.
- 46:17SPEAKER_02: Everything for them offensively.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: So um, if he's back, uh, you know, I think Pittston wins this game.
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: If he's out, uh, then I think Hazleton wins this game.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of a hard thing for me to pick, not knowing if he's in or out.
- 46:30SPEAKER_02: So uh he's pretty much the wild card here.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: So in they win.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: Out, I'm gonna take Hazleton.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Disclose the asterisk there right before the the prediction.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: We'll see what happens.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: I love how Dave Kurtzman's in our chat there, making his predictions of over all the games.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Dave, you've got to like tally these up, go back to the old podcast, track Coach Juan, it's his record, and see who's doing.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: To all our listeners out there, we love that you're in there.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: Please put in your predictions, ask questions, comments.
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, we love your participation in the show.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: So thank you all.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: And Dave, thank you for uh putting those picks in there.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: I'm curious how you've been picking them.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: Coach Juan, it's Mid Valley 2-2 at Lackawanna Trail 0-4.
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: Mid Valley should be favored on the road versus a windless trail squad.
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: Another interesting game because Trail has some kids who've been hurt and are starting to get some reinforcements back, which I think will make a big uh, you know, pay dividends for them, make a big deal uh in a gameplay.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm gonna take Mid Valley just because I think they're able to run the ball well enough, and I think Trail will struggle with that.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: But this is another one of those games, don't be surprised.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, if we're talking next week, that Trail beats Mid Valley.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: Lake Lehman 1-3 at Hanover area 0-4.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: The ranked but reeling Black Knights trying to right the ship against winless Hanover.
- 47:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, another interesting game.
- 47:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, Lake Lehman's been struggling a little bit with offense, but again, they've played a pretty decent schedule.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: Hanover has as well.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm gonna take Hannover here just because of the uh Richardson, I think, is a great quarterback and they have a good receiving court.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I think it might be one of those where they could just score more points.
- 48:07SPEAKER_02: Um, like I said, Lake Lehman hasn't been scoring a lot, so uh you know, I just don't know if they'll be able to keep, you know, keep up with them offensively.
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: So I'll take Hanover here in this one.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Coach Hawan, it's sounding the air horn there for Hanover area.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Will they get their first win?
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: We will see.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: Berwick, 2-2 at Pottsville, 1-3.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: Berwick heads to District 11, looking to bounce back from the Wilkes Bear upset.
- 48:32SPEAKER_02: Uh Pottsville's one and three.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: They've been giving up a ton of points.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: And if that's a bad uh you know methodology when you're playing Berwick, who likes to put up a lot of points, Cleaver is uh a do-everything guy for them.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: Uh last week, 206 yards rushing, two touchdowns, uh, threw a couple interceptions and turned it over.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: And I think that's one of the reasons why they lost that game last week, just turnovers.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: But uh he'll bounce back, Berwick will bounce back, big over Pottsville.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: Coach, I was thinking Montrose, you know, looking to shake off uh Holy Cross loss, may be able to do it, but Renaissance Academy, not very familiar, but I see they're 4-0.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: Renaissance Academy's 4-0, and they've only given up 20 points all year.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: So uh I think it's gonna be another kind of a game for Montrose to run into a team that's uh you know that's playing pretty well offensively and some good defense.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Uh Liam McNamy's been great for uh Montrose.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: McNamee's a name there.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: I played with uh the McNames when I was there at Montrose, and they're they're great athletes.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: I'm sure Liam is a no different.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: Uh so three touchdowns for him last week, but I'm gonna take Renaissance Academy just because I'm assuming defensively they're only giving up 20 points and scoring a lot, they gotta be pretty good.
- 49:43SPEAKER_02: So uh I'll take them over Montrose.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Interesting one to watch there for sure.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: Panther Valley 2-2 at Tunkanic 0-4.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: Winless Tunkanic hosts a District 11 opponent that's seeking it first.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: Could they get a coach?
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm gonna take Panther Valley.
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: We've talked about uh Panther Valley's quarterback, who is unbelievable.
- 50:02SPEAKER_02: Cy Maynard, uh big stack guy, rushing and passing.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: I think it'll be tough to stop.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Tunkanic's done a little better job rushing the ball and uh moving the ball on offense, but I just don't think they'll have enough.
- 50:14SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm gonna take Panther Valley.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: We shift from Friday to Saturday games, coach, where we have three to wrap up our preview.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Dunmore 4-0 at Susquehanna 0-4, top small school and the fit of the week honoree Weston Yannon are big favorites on the road.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Dunmore will win this game.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: Again, too many athletes, uh, very good defensively.
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: Uh just too much, I think, for Susquehanna to handle.
- 50:39SPEAKER_01: Holy Cross has sparked my interest after a big win last week.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: One and three travel to Colmont Voltec, but the Voltec squad's 0-5, Coach.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: The Crusaders ride the Montrose upset into a winnable non-league road game.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: Do we get two wins for Holy Cross?
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: Break up the Crusaders.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: Two wins in a row for Holy Cross.
- 50:59SPEAKER_02: Uh Rikowski's been unbelievable throwing the ball, and I think um uh the Voltec schools only scored 12 points in four games, so that's not going to be enough.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: Um Holy Cross moving to win number two.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: Holy Redeemer one and three travels to Pine Grove one and three.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: Redeemer with quarterback Brady McDermott takes District 11 road trip.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: What do we have?
- 51:27SPEAKER_02: Pine Grove's been giving up a ton of points.
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: Uh they're one and three, and I just think uh Holy Redeemer has too much offense.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: McDermott's really good, like you said.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'm gonna take Holy Redeemer here over Pine Grove.
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: Coach, before we close out the fourth quarter in the show here, a sponsor Reed, a quick heads up for fight fans.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: Boxing is back at Mohegan, Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 10th with Mohegan Fall Fists.
