- 0:03Our number 2 Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio network as we
- 0:07take you until 2:00 off the bench, coming up from 2 until 5.
- 0:12Overtime Iowa, 5 until 6. Let's talk to our friend Matt
- 0:16Snyder. We talk baseball with Matt every
- 0:18Monday, most Mondays during the season.
- 0:21This time next week, we'll be on the precipice of Home Run Derby.
- 0:25He. Sound excited?
- 0:28Yeah. It's just the week that there's
- 0:29nothing going on. Hello, Matt Snyder, how are you?
- 0:31I love the All Star game. Don't get me wrong, I know you
- 0:33do too. Hello, Matt Snyder, How are you?
- 0:36I'm great. You know, it's, yeah, a fun time
- 0:39for baseball when we have a lot of the attention on us.
- 0:42Absolutely Yep, no doubt about it.
- 0:45Well, a lot of ground to cover with you.
- 0:47I I guess we'll, we'll start with the All Star game just
- 0:50cause the the extras were announced yesterday.
- 0:54Biggest omission would be Suzuki in your world where who would
- 0:58who got left off? That should have been a part of
- 1:01it. Yeah, I think what Frame Revell
- 1:04does on the American League side, and I easily could put him
- 1:07over Brian Wu. I mean, the the Mariners got 4.
- 1:09So it's not like it was a representative from a team that
- 1:13had to have somebody to squeeze them out, say Suzuki.
- 1:16I thought that's a big one. I mean, 25 home runs, the Major
- 1:18League leader in RBI. It's it has to be rare that the
- 1:22Major League RBI leader is not an all.
- 1:25Apparently it's happened twice, Matt.
- 1:27Apparently it's. Happened twice, OK, at least
- 1:29that one you can kind of see how it happened, right?
- 1:31Like say Suzuki was always going to win the DH voting and then
- 1:35Schwarber making it over Suzuki, you can kind of justify that and
- 1:39he's a more established quantity and it would say at DH, you can
- 1:43see that one, the framer Valdez one I thought was pretty
- 1:46egregious as well. And I know that he just his OPS
- 1:51increased by like 79 points over the weekend, but Michael Bush is
- 1:55fifth in OPS in the majors right now.
- 1:57Now, again, 79 points got added on in the weekend series in the
- 2:02all three games were probably decided before that.
- 2:05Those are probably a little too late too, too little too late.
- 2:08Plus, nationally, first baseman Freddie Freeman, Pete Alonzo,
- 2:11metal. So again, you can see how that
- 2:13happened. Hey, when will we get the
- 2:15starters and is there a chance we get skeins versus Scubble?
- 2:20They revealed those Monday right at the press conference before
- 2:24media day. Gotcha.
- 2:25So we got I. Don't know exactly what time it
- 2:28will it probably something like 2 eastern.
- 2:29They'll do the press conference with the starting pitchers, and
- 2:32that's when they reveal the starting lineups.
- 2:34I think there's no way in the world that it will not be school
- 2:38on the American League side. He didn't even start last year
- 2:40as Colburn Burns last year. So this will be school's first
- 2:43start in the All Star game. So I don't see why anybody else
- 2:47would be picked. I guess you could say Freed
- 2:50returning to Atlanta, but why wouldn't that be as big a deal
- 2:53when school's the best pitcher in the world right now?
- 2:55I think you got to make that choice and wait.
- 2:57Then again, it is Aaron Boone deciding, I suppose, to try to
- 3:00go with Freed. Yeah, thinking that'd be a bad
- 3:03choice though. I think it's got to be school on
- 3:05the NL side man. I mean Zach Wheeler or Paul
- 3:11Schemes, I don't feel like he can go wrong either way because
- 3:14team started last year. Schemes is still a major selling
- 3:17point. He's still one of the best
- 3:18pitchers in the world, but Wheeler's never started it
- 3:20before and he is as absolutely as deserving as Schemes.
- 3:25So tough choice on the NL side. I think AL side should be
- 3:29Google. I guess the only complication
- 3:31there is but the boom freed Atlanta thing, but it should be
- 3:35Scubal. And then on the NL side we'll
- 3:36see if it's Keens or Wheeler. But that, that one feels like a
- 3:40complete toss up. One Soto, if his name was John
- 3:43Smith and he didn't just sign a $765 million contract.
- 3:47Did you? Nice.
- 3:49He'd be Hunt, right? I mean the expectations.
- 3:51This guy's in the top ten in almost every offensive category
- 3:54that matters is OPS is over 900, OPWRCS at 175.
- 3:59I mean the the analytic numbers plus the counting stats.
- 4:02Anybody else puts up those numbers?
- 4:03It's a no brainer. Is it just a contract?
- 4:06I think so. And the snubs I wrote, yeah,
- 4:09basically the exact same thing. Like if he had a different
- 4:12contract and a different name and somebody saw top three and
- 4:16on base percentage, 21 home runs.
- 4:18Oh, he's absolutely an All Star. And I mean, it's over 500
- 4:22slugging percentage, right towards the top and on base
- 4:24percentage. And again, 21 home runs.
- 4:26Now, a lot of that came late and we had two months of what's
- 4:31wrong with Juan Soto talk. Yep.
- 4:32And when that happens, all the other players in the league hear
- 4:35it and my hunt is the player vote.
- 4:38There might have been some kind of impact there.
- 4:40And you do wonder if there's a jealousy factor on the contract.
- 4:44I mean, we've dealt with this. I know that it's leaked into
- 4:48women's basketball, even with the Caitlin Clark and why he was
- 4:51way too low on the the players. But you know, I remember Bryce
- 4:54Harper, I feel like a lot of times, especially early in his
- 4:57career, he was way lower on the player vote than he should have
- 5:00been because of all the attention he got.
- 5:02I feel like that steeped in here a little bit.
- 5:04Like you said, if if this was a like a rookie and we'd never
- 5:08heard of him before and he was third or fourth and on base
- 5:10percentage with 21 home runs, it'd be an absolute no brainer.
- 5:14And he'd be the first guy everybody mentioned on the snubs
- 5:17instead, like I was that ESPN was on the reveal.
- 5:20They they were running through all these stuff.
- 5:21They didn't even say his name. And I was like, how can you not
- 5:23bring up Juan Solo? Let's get to let's get to a
- 5:28games on the field. And man, it's I know the blue,
- 5:31the Blue Jays are red hot. But to me, the team in the
- 5:34American League, that's really got my attention and I think
- 5:36baseball's attention, especially when they go into Dodger Stadium
- 5:40sweep the Dodgers, right, these Astros.
- 5:42What is it about this team? Matt, I'm going to ask you the
- 5:45same question last week because probably, you know, they, they
- 5:48keep losing their guys, right? Well, they never overcome this.
- 5:51Oh my God, Kyle Tucker guy, This is the That's the end.
- 5:54Alvarez has been hurt all year. It's just it's one thing after
- 5:57another. Yet here they are again.
- 6:00If you would have said, you know, last year at this time,
- 6:04OK, they're going to let out Bregman, walk in free agency,
- 6:06they're going to trade Kyle Tucker, Jordan Alvarez is going
- 6:09to be hurt basically all year. I mean, his -.5 WAR right now, I
- 6:14would say, oh, they're going to stock, they're going to be
- 6:16awful. Instead, you look at the
- 6:19production of getting from Cam Smith, Jake Myers producing
- 6:22center, Altuve acclimating himself to left field, doing
- 6:25Jose Altuve things. And man, Jeremy Pena was playing
- 6:28like an MVP candidate when he went down.
- 6:30He'll be back. Your Don will be back
- 6:32eventually. Pitching wise, they've been
- 6:35banged up. But Hunter Brown taking a step
- 6:37forward, Bomber Valdez is an egregious, egregious snub on for
- 6:41the All Star game. Again, that's a great one too
- 6:43right there. And they're going to get
- 6:44healthier in the second-half in the rotation, whether it's
- 6:48Eragetti, Luis Garcia, Christian Javier, JP France, they have a
- 6:52bunch of guys who are throwing live VP and getting ready to go
- 6:55on rehab assignment. So we'll see how they figure out
- 6:57their rotation. But then in the bullpen, Brian
- 6:59Abreu, I actually I think he's a snub for the All Star game since
- 7:02they had a few set up men in there and Josh Haters 25 for 25
- 7:06and stays unbelievable top to bottom.
- 7:09They are a master class in next guy up and they've been doing
- 7:13that for years and years and years going back to when they
- 7:16let Garrett Cole walk, going back to when they let Carlos
- 7:19Correa walk in free agency and plug Jeremy Pena in and then won
- 7:22the World Series. That's just what they do.
- 7:26You Darvish is back into the rotation starting tonight.
- 7:29Oh, is he good, Padres? I'm going to guess it's going to
- 7:32be probably a slower type of build up for him.
- 7:35But boy, you add that kind of experience, that kind of playoff
- 7:38chops that he has into that Padres team.
- 7:41How dangerous do you still see San Diego?
- 7:44Yeah, they they're one of those teams who they just need to make
- 7:47the postseason and if everything clicking right at the same time,
- 7:51it's one of those teams that you could see them making a deep run
- 7:54like when the Rangers won the World Series or when the
- 7:56Phillies got to the World Series from a wild card spot.
- 7:58It's a type of team where they have very little Major League
- 8:02depth. So any injury becomes glaring
- 8:04which and the Joe Musgrove Tommy John surgery last year in the
- 8:08playoffs. Heading into this year, their
- 8:10rotation depth has been pretty depleted.
- 8:13But like right now to meta season Randy Vasquez and you'd
- 8:16prefer not to have to lean much on Randy Vasquez, but now they
- 8:19get you Darvish back. We'll see how he is.
- 8:22Obviously they wanted to be hitting his stride come
- 8:25September and then into October. But yeah, it's they're top
- 8:28heavies. But if you get for native Tatis,
- 8:32Junior, Jackson Merrill, Manny Machado firing at all cylinders,
- 8:35throw in some Zander Bogarts, Jake Conworth, Luisa Rise, they
- 8:39can go in the playoffs. And then the back of the Bolts
- 8:42in with All Star Jason Adam, with Robert Suarez, the
- 8:45rotation, Pavetta, Steve Darvish, that that's the type of
- 8:48group that reminded me of maybe a little bit of the 2019
- 8:52Nationals where they only had like 8 or 9 good players, but
- 8:55they just got everybody hot at the right time and then they
- 8:58carried that and then do a championship.
- 8:59By the way, Luisa Rice struck out last night.
- 9:02Doesn't happen often. Thought it would make that part
- 9:04of the programming. Absolutely.
- 9:07All right, so let's get to Trent.
- 9:09And I talked about this an hour ago.
- 9:10When it comes to the Cardinals, we kind of rehashed Trent was
- 9:13off all last week and you know, I think when he left they were
- 9:16in the playoffs and now they're one game out of the wild card.
- 9:19So when it comes to the trade deadline or leading up to it and
- 9:22John Mosaic, we know he's out after this year.
- 9:25How do the Cardinals handle that or how do teams in similar
- 9:29situations handle that? You know you're about to either
- 9:32buy or sell or stand pat and the ultimate decision is it going to
- 9:36be a by made by a guy that's no longer there at the end of
- 9:39September. I mean, surely he'll work with
- 9:42Bloom there and at least they've laid the foundation.
- 9:46It's not like some of these other places like in Washington
- 9:48where they didn't know Rizzo was going to be fired a week before
- 9:51the draft and now they're drafting number one overall.
- 9:55At least they're kind of working together with the transition.
- 9:59But remember, they barely did anything in the offseason.
- 10:01They didn't really commit to one side or the other.
- 10:04Generally speaking, what teams do.
- 10:07And we're talking about where the Cardinals are now.
- 10:08We're talking about where the Reds are, where the Diamondbacks
- 10:10are over the American League. There's a bunch Twins, Royals,
- 10:14Angels, Rangers. They have to repair for both
- 10:18ways. They have to do a bunch of
- 10:19scouting and prospects. If they for other teams, if they
- 10:23want to sell, they have to talk about which of their prospects
- 10:26they'd be OK with giving up. If they want to buy it, that's
- 10:30just the way it goes. So they are right now, I would
- 10:33imagine preparing to do either or and when it gets time, like 3
- 10:39or 4 days beforehand, then you say, hey, we've got to make a
- 10:41decision one way or the other. Or sometimes teams do a little
- 10:45bit of both where they kind of, I guess with the Cardinals, it
- 10:48would look like shedding Nolan Arenado's salary and maybe you
- 10:52move on from Sunny Gray in a trade.
- 10:55And then that would also probably entail just getting rid
- 10:58of Nicholas for whatever. And then try to maybe buy
- 11:02younger players who are Major League ready and something like
- 11:07that. And you try to do both and say
- 11:08we still got a chance to compete this year, but we're also
- 11:12setting up for next year maybe a little bit.
- 11:14What the Tigers did last year, I know they didn't really
- 11:16necessarily buy much, but they sold Jack Flaherty, but they
- 11:19didn't get rid of any long term pieces because they wanted to
- 11:21compete next year. And then, lo and behold, they
- 11:23got hot down the stretch and got some playoff experience, too.
- 11:27Year ago the Guardians were in the ALCS, this year the duct
- 11:30tape broke and now they are looking at A10 game losing
- 11:34streak and certainly out of contention.
- 11:36Guys like Stephen Kwan still got a couple years of arbitration in
- 11:39front of him. Carlos Santando is a one year
- 11:42deal. He's 39.
- 11:43But the biggest obviously is Jose Ramirez.
- 11:45If they are going to completely tear this thing down, maybe very
- 11:49well could be the time is now. What would Jose Ramirez return
- 11:52come trade deadline? I think it would be the biggest
- 11:57return that anybody got this year.
- 11:59I don't think anybody else is even in that ballpark.
- 12:01It's not just because of how good he's been for so long, but
- 12:06it's it's this contract, this player, this team friendly
- 12:08contract that he signed with the Guardian.
- 12:12Three more years, over 20 million a year, sure, but he
- 12:15plays like a 40 to $45 million player.
- 12:18So especially if you're talking about a larger market team who
- 12:23can absorb this type of deal and not really have it hurt them and
- 12:27they add a player of his caliber.
- 12:28I mean, I am absolutely dreaming right now.
- 12:31He's talked about the Cub, but I like Matt Shaw and I think he's
- 12:35going. To be good, but.
- 12:36If you could make a move and somehow include Shaw on that
- 12:39deal and you'd bring Jose Ramirez for the next years, I
- 12:42would be going crazy. I would think that was better
- 12:44than the Tucker deal. So, yeah, I mean, but you know,
- 12:49if he did come on the market, you'd have to compete because
- 12:53the Yankees need a third baseman.
- 12:55The Dodgers right now have Max Muncie banged up, and I'm sure
- 12:58they would absolutely love to grab Jose Ramirez.
- 13:00So there would be competition. Pretty much every contender
- 13:04would take a look. By the way, it's not just you
- 13:06who need a third baseman. If a player like that came on
- 13:09the market, you make room for a guy like Jose Ramirez.
- 13:13Speaking of the Guardians, the gambling investigation with Luis
- 13:16Ortiz. Makes no sense to me.
- 13:19Incredible. How much money could you
- 13:20actually get down on that type of?
- 13:21Bet right, you and I, I mean, if we put a limit of you're not
- 13:25getting the $500 down on that bet, just incredible short
- 13:30sightedness and just how ridiculous that people believe
- 13:33that they can get around something as crazy as this kind
- 13:35of prop bet and you're not going to get caught.
- 13:38I, I'm at a loss on it. I really, I, I didn't think that
- 13:42stuff like this was going to be as big of a problem as it was
- 13:46back when the the White Sox threw the World Series in the 19
- 13:49teens, because the players are rich nowadays.
- 13:52Back then, they weren't. Back then, they needed second
- 13:54jobs in the offseason. Yeah, they could get bought off,
- 13:57but you're you're, you're risking being banned for life
- 14:01from a profession where even if you're only a Luis Ortiz, you
- 14:06could still make $10 million before you're 30 years old.
- 14:10It's hard to imagine coming anywhere even in the same
- 14:13ballpark of that and, and gambling on a pitch prop.
- 14:17I I don't understand it. And even all those guys who won
- 14:22your suspensions, if you saw they were all betting small
- 14:25amounts, it was like 20 bucks. Three of the four guys who are
- 14:28caught were dude were down. Three of the four guys who are
- 14:31caught were losing and the one who won only won like 80 bucks.
- 14:35So it's like. You're again, this is a
- 14:38livelihood where you can make millions and millions before you
- 14:41turn 3035 years old and you're betting $20 and risking being
- 14:45banned for life. It doesn't really add up to me.
- 14:48I don't get it. I'm with you.
- 14:50And even if he was funneling that information to, you know,
- 14:52people he was indebted to, they're not going to be able to
- 14:55bet any more than I mean, the limit on can get caught.
- 14:59Everything gets flagged when there's high amount.
- 15:00Yes, it's it's unbelievable to me that see, we're watching this
- 15:05guy just do this to himself. All right, let's get back to I
- 15:08want to I want to focus in on the Cubs with you as we saw the
- 15:11three-game series against the Cardinals.
- 15:13Cardinals got Game 2 of it blow out last night.
- 15:18So So what did what did the Cubs do other than third base?
- 15:21And I'm with you on shy. I really liked how he plays
- 15:23defensively. The average is going the wrong
- 15:25way. I'm just blown away by whoever
- 15:27catches is going to come up with a big hit, whether it's Kelly or
- 15:31McGuire or am I what what else do they do?
- 15:35I don't think who Cappy wants to get like an heraldist.
- 15:39Chapman man. I see plenty throwing it up
- 15:42there at a buck 2. Where would you where would you
- 15:45address if it was up to you? Well, I mean, it never hurts to
- 15:49get a reliever, but I don't see dedicating significant resources
- 15:53to the bullpen because there's been so many guys who have done
- 15:55such a good job there that I trust the operation that Jed
- 16:00Hoyer and Craig Counsel have in place right now.
- 16:03It's the one that I know Keller blew it on Saturdays.
- 16:05That's fresh. But he's been great.
- 16:07Valenti has been great, Keller has been great, Presley has been
- 16:09great. Since that Giants meltdown,
- 16:11which is one of the greatest meltdowns of all time Field bar,
- 16:14Palmer and Flexen, they've all been so good.
- 16:17I I'm not worried about that. I think you need another
- 16:19starting pitcher because right now, Imanaga and Boyd, they
- 16:24definitely look like a good 1-2 punch.
- 16:27If you're not going to get an ace, I would want a three
- 16:30between those two and Tyone. I don't know how much Colin
- 16:33Ray's going to hold up all year. Ben Brown, I don't want to count
- 16:36on Kate Horton right now, 52 innings in the majors.
- 16:39I don't know how much higher they want him to go.
- 16:42He's going to get to an innings cap at some point.
- 16:44So I think you're looking at a #3 starter type and that's where
- 16:48you see all the smoke, right? It's Mitch Keller is one of the
- 16:50names you keep seeing and I think he would fit perfectly in
- 16:53there. The Cubs like guys with cutters
- 16:55like that. He he would improve moving from
- 16:58the Pirate system of pitching to the Cubs system of pitching.
- 17:01I mean, you just look at what it's done for Matthew Boyd
- 17:03alone. And and I know part of that was
- 17:05with the Guardian last year, but still, this is the best version
- 17:07of Matthew Boyd there's ever been.
- 17:09Mitch Keller could benefit from stuff like that.
- 17:12So somebody like that, if the Angels fall out, I've mentioned
- 17:15him on the show before, Tyler Anderson, especially given that
- 17:18he's a lefty and this is Justin Steele's spot in the rotation
- 17:21and still being a lefty, somebody like that is I think
- 17:25the biggest need. And then I think you're open to
- 17:29third base, not just if Jose Ramirez becomes available, but
- 17:33somebody like, let's say a Eugenio Suarez.
- 17:36He's his contracts up at the end of the year.
- 17:38So he's a free agent. If you think, you know what,
- 17:41we've got a chance to get Suarez here and not give that much up.
- 17:44And really, if you want to swing for Suarez and Meryl Kelly
- 17:47together, that's the year that solves both of your issues
- 17:50there. And you can that you can plug
- 17:52Suarez in. I mean, where 6th or 7th in this
- 17:56Cubs order and he can hit 40 bombs in a season.
- 17:58That'd be ridiculous. I think you add that in a
- 18:01heartbeat. And then that's only a rental
- 18:02and you can go back to Shawn next year.
- 18:04Six game losing streak ends for the Yankees.
- 18:07Alert A meter concern. I didn't I I don't think in my
- 18:14wildest of dreams I'm sure Ken would even agree.
- 18:18I didn't think that Blue Jays three-game deficit was going to
- 18:20turn into a three-game fleet in real estate.
- 18:23It was unbelievable for that to happen.
- 18:25I guess the Yankees should be reassured that they held on
- 18:28yesterday, but I still don't know how fired up I am about
- 18:30getting a 5 nothing lead and having to sweat it out and won
- 18:3364. The bullpen has been a problem.
- 18:35The starting rotation needed another starting pitcher before
- 18:38Clark Schmidt went down. Now it's even worse.
- 18:41They have Max Freed, who's amazing, Carlos Rodon, who is
- 18:44good but inconsistent, and then a bunch of question marks.
- 18:47Will Warren, Marcus Stroman, What's loose?
- 18:49He'll going to be when he comes back.
- 18:51They need a lot of pitching. They could probably use a bat at
- 18:55third base, and I've mentioned several third baseman that would
- 18:58click kick Jazz over to 2nd where he's much better suited
- 19:01defensively. They've had defensive problems.
- 19:04I almost feel like they need more than they can get.
- 19:07They need like 2 starting pitchers, 2 relievers, 1/3
- 19:10baseman. That's a huge laundry list
- 19:13heading toward the trade deadline for a team that doesn't
- 19:15have a ton in their farm system. So I honestly, they're still
- 19:21really good. They're going through a down
- 19:23stretch. Those happen.
- 19:24The Blue Jays are probably due a down stretch at some point, but
- 19:29I I mean I wouldn't be surprised if the Blue Jays won this thing.
- 19:33I I still don't think the Rays can survive all these Rd. trips.
- 19:37Coming up, I don't either. So I think it's, I think it's
- 19:39Yankees or Blue Jays, and I think it's probably going to go
- 19:42down to the wire. Yeah, there's, they're saying in
- 19:44New York that the Cody Bellinger's catch and then throw
- 19:47to first base for the double play was what's going to save
- 19:50the year for the Yankees. Save the season and maybe it
- 19:53will, maybe it will. It was a hell of a play.
- 19:55I'll give him that. It was a certainly hell of a
- 19:57play. Matt
- 19:58talkingbaseballcbssports.com Matt, look forward to catching
- 20:02up with you next week. We'll kind of do our look back
- 20:05at the that's not more than the first half, but to pre All Star
- 20:09break as we reached that point in the season.
- 20:11Matt Snyder, Thank you as always, buddy.
- 20:12Appreciate it. All right, take care.
- 20:15Good to talk to you, Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com, as we
- 20:18talk a little MLB. Glad you brought that up.
- 20:20I meant to do it in the first segment, the Luis Ortiz.
- 20:22Yeah, I mean, Trent, what is he thinking?
- 20:26One of those nights you're having a couple of drinks with
- 20:28your buddies, say hey, you know what, we could get away.
- 20:30How can it come to that? It's.
- 20:32A can you bet 100? Can you get 100 bucks down?
- 20:34Maybe 500 maybe? And just say for me for
- 20:38instance, a $1020.00 better, I put a $500 bet down that alone.
- 20:44Is going to yeah, red flags yes and.
- 20:46Then you couple it with something this innocuous, yes,
- 20:49something that I've never bet before.
- 20:52More flags are going right. And for it, and we're talking
- 20:55about it, it was the first pitch of an inning.
- 20:57He's either going to hit the batter or it's going to be a
- 20:59ball and he's firing on that. And the and the second time he
- 21:03did it was nowhere near the strike.
- 21:04Zone. And that's where even more flags
- 21:06go up. And he's going to just, he just
- 21:09has ruined his whole career for 1/5.
- 21:13Have you seen the amount of Bunny?
- 21:14I've not seen the amount. They haven't released that yet,
- 21:16but they will. But they will.
- 21:19I saw this brought up the Yankees there at the end.
- 21:21This is their schedule for the rest of the month.
- 21:24Mariners, Cubs are the next playoffs.
- 21:28They go to the Braves coming out of the break.
- 21:29OK. Then they go to Toronto
- 21:32playoffs, Philadelphia playoff and the Rays for four.
- 21:36We might. That last Rays game of the
- 21:38four-game series is July 31st. We could be talking about the
- 21:41Yankees selling with that schedule.
- 21:44Yeah, it's not a stretch. And with Matt what he just
- 21:48mentioned, that's why I jumped into my mind.
- 21:50They have so much need. What's better?
- 21:53We saw them do that what four years ago?
- 21:55Is that when they had that sell off that goes four years ago.
- 21:58It's so rare for them, but what? And it was a big deal, but it
- 22:01worked incredibly well. They bounced back and they
- 22:03because of their financial flexibility, we're able to do it
- 22:06right away. Just something to file away for
- 22:09July 30th. Do you have a single bet on the
- 22:11Yankees on any type of bet under wins?
- 22:16I don't have. I don't.
- 22:17I don't have a Yankees period. I have.
- 22:20They were my throw out before the year.
- 22:22Both New York teams under. It was in fact, I was looking at
- 22:25that when I got home. I have four teams in the
- 22:28American League that I bet before the season to win the AL,
- 22:30just win the Ali have. Let me pull it back up here.
- 22:35The Orioles. No shot they're going to finish
- 22:38last in their division. The Rangers?
- 22:42Yeah. The Mariners at 12 to one.
- 22:44Good. Shot Yep, you're alive.
- 22:46And the Blue Jays at 25 to 1 to win the American League.
- 22:52I don't think they will, but they're playing exceptionally.
- 22:55Well, if Springer keeps hitting like this, oh.
- 22:56My God. And he's, you know what?
- 22:58He was a snub. He's excited.
- 23:00Might get some attention for that.
- 23:02All right, we're going to catch up with Bill Seals on his way to
- 23:04Texas for Big 12 Media Days. Here's before we do that,
- 23:09however, here's an opportunity for you to win $1000.
- 23:12Yes, it's time for bonus bucks, Head to kxando.com.
- 23:15Right now, the keyword is bills. Bills kxno.com Bills at kxno.com
- 23:20Your chance to win $1000 Bill seals next Miller in Condon Iowa
- 23:24Sports Radio Network. I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back
- 23:38just past 130 on a Monday, top of the hour off the bench.
- 23:43Off the bench, Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain from 2:00 until 5.
- 23:48Bill Seal cyclonereport.com, part of on three media making
- 23:52his way down to Dallas to cover Iowa State and Big 12 media
- 23:55days, which begin tomorrow in Frisco.
- 23:58He joins us. Bill Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 24:00coming on. Before we get into Big 12 stuff
- 24:03and Iowa State stuff, just Trent was just commenting during the
- 24:06break and I hold concur a Cyclone report.
- 24:09I think the website looks really good.
- 24:10Bill, you have to be happy with the transition.
- 24:14Yeah, Yeah. I think it, I think it's going
- 24:17great. You know, as with any
- 24:19transition, the first couple days are always, always kind of
- 24:23tricky. But I think we've gotten past
- 24:25that phase and I got a report last night from on three that
- 24:29they're actually ahead of the schedule as far as this whole
- 24:33transition goes. And now they're on to some other
- 24:37projects that I think are really going to enhance what you're
- 24:40getting right now on cyclone reports.
- 24:42So really excited about it. Looking great and you're going
- 24:45to have a lot of great content coming up as you're making the
- 24:48long drive down to Texas and what on your way through Kansas
- 24:52right now that Turnpike that's got to be the rest we're stretch
- 24:54of Rd. in America that thing is so.
- 24:55Boring. See, I don't mind it.
- 24:56Doing it at night, it feels like you are all alone out there
- 24:59outside of the area. I like it.
- 25:02You know, I, I, I guess I'm more of a glutton for punishment.
- 25:05I've, I'm taking the route through Joplin.
- 25:08So I'm going to go through eastern Oklahoma and, and in
- 25:12through, yeah, eastern northeast Texas, I guess.
- 25:16So, yeah, it's, it's not a bad route.
- 25:19So cut through a lot of that construction that we've had on
- 25:23the I-35 and Oklahoma City, going to go all around that.
- 25:28Big 12 released their pre season teams today.
- 25:31Iowa State has three, all on the defensive side of the football,
- 25:35Dominic Orange, Jeremiah Cooper and John Tez Williams.
- 25:38And correct me if I'm wrong, I think all three are accompanying
- 25:41Campbell tomorrow, correct? That is correct, yes.
- 25:44Good, good, good state depending on that.
- 25:49Yeah. I, I, I think they, the media
- 25:52did a good job there. They're not picking teams.
- 25:54This year, so all the. Focus went into went into
- 25:57picking players. Yeah.
- 25:59So they better get it right or they'll take that away next
- 26:01year, right? And I I completely believe that
- 26:03the fact that Arizona State was picked last and won the
- 26:06conference is the reason there is no pre season rankings
- 26:09anymore. But that's just me.
- 26:10Sorry, Trent. No, no problem at all.
- 26:12So you look at the defensive side of the football, they're
- 26:13going to be outstanding over there.
- 26:15You know, an intriguing 1 though of the five guys that are going
- 26:18is Tyler Miller, a guy that big size definitely has had that.
- 26:21And Ken and I were talking about, you know, the schedule
- 26:24close games a year ago if they go the other way this year.
- 26:27But this offensive line and Tyler Miller maybe in
- 26:29particular, I think that maybe there's more reason than for
- 26:34optimism early in the season where that offensive line has
- 26:36had trouble seemingly every year than any other just because of
- 26:40the experience that they have. A Tell us a little bit about
- 26:42Miller in the offensive line as a whole.
- 26:45Well, yeah, he kind of one of those guys that was thrown in in
- 26:50early, I think got a lot of playing time really early in his
- 26:54career and and I I think has had to do a lot of physical
- 26:59maturation that you know what that carry in that that was 69
- 27:03frame. I think now you look at him and
- 27:05you're like, gosh, that guy's, that guy's going to play on
- 27:08Sundays. And I think he's really
- 27:11developed, I think helped last year, Jalen Travis kind of on
- 27:15the the opposite side, they're flanking him.
- 27:17But I think this is, this is Tyler Miller's offensive line
- 27:21right here at that, you know, maybe last year was upwards in a
- 27:25way. He'd come back for his super
- 27:26senior year. And this year it, it's Tyler
- 27:29Miller's gig and, and they Iowa State's guy as far as you look
- 27:33at the line overall at 7 guys back with a pretty good amount
- 27:38of playing experience. So there will be some sorting
- 27:41through to do. I I think it's a foregone
- 27:44conclusion at this point. Brendan Black's going to move in
- 27:48and play center. That opens it up for Dylan
- 27:51Barrett to start there. He's back healthy.
- 27:55Trevor Bohr, another one I'm thinking on that offensive line.
- 27:59He's a breakout candidate. What we saw of him coming back,
- 28:03I think he's battled maybe a little bit of injury as well,
- 28:07but what we've seen of him so far has been really good.
- 28:10So you look at Bohr maybe as a breakout candidate, that
- 28:14offensive line. What about when it comes to the
- 28:17injuries at the linebacker position last year?
- 28:20How far how a forthcoming do you think Campbell would be as far
- 28:23as their progression and and of the of the guys that to miss
- 28:27significant time. I mean, who's the most I need to
- 28:31put like this? Who means more to that defensive
- 28:34side of the ball would be Bacon coming off the year he had prior
- 28:37to getting hurt. We heard so much about Prozina
- 28:40and how he was, you know, so ahead of everybody seemingly as
- 28:43a freshman last year and he was banged up during the year.
- 28:46Which of the injured linebackers do you have, do you think, and
- 28:50does Campbell think, and maybe Haycock has the biggest
- 28:53opportunity to have the biggest impact on the defense this year?
- 28:58Well, I I think Caleb Bacon's return is going to be crucial at
- 29:02that at that mic spot. They they being so short there
- 29:07last season and I think it hurt other areas of defense, but
- 29:11everybody expected Bacon to be a stalwart.
- 29:14I think it indications are he's going to be that this year.
- 29:19You you also look maybe out of that will position Carson
- 29:23Willich, getting him back. It's going to be huge and it's
- 29:26going to be an interesting training camp battle because
- 29:30Cooper evil played more snaps than any linebacker last year.
- 29:34I right up there with anybody across the board on defense.
- 29:38He's not going to want to give up that starting position.
- 29:40But you know, will it's just chomping at the bit to get back
- 29:44out there and time's running short on his career as well.
- 29:48He's one of the veteran guys. So McLaughlin, I think we we saw
- 29:53they they've got some pretty good depth at Sam.
- 29:55But it would be nice to I think I think for cycle and fans to
- 29:59have Will McLaughlin out there full time.
- 30:02He was really, I think towards the stretch run last year,
- 30:06putting behind him that back surgery that that cost him some
- 30:10games. So, yeah, I think all
- 30:12indications though, this, this is a healthy unit going in to a
- 30:16camp and I, I think one of those tailgate tour stops, Matt
- 30:22Campbell even told the crowd that this is the best group of
- 30:25linebackers top to bottom he's had in his time and aims and I,
- 30:30I don't. Think some good ones.
- 30:31Yeah, I don't think that's hyperbole either.
- 30:34I think he could be could be correct there.
- 30:37You know the quarterback position, so Sam Levitt,
- 30:39offensive pre season player of the year, the that was announced
- 30:42earlier today. And you think of Rocco and I saw
- 30:44him on a list in the Big 12. I think he was 7th on the list.
- 30:47And at first it's kind of head grabs your attention, right?
- 30:50And then he looked through the quarterbacks.
- 30:51Good quarterbacks. The depth of this conference and
- 30:54obviously the top end guys like Levitt non down, but you think
- 30:57of Jalen Daniels and what he can be when he's healthy.
- 30:59Avery Johnson waiting for him to break out.
- 31:00Sawyer. Robertson.
- 31:02Morton, Hoover, the TCU and Texas Tech quarterbacks who I
- 31:04really like, even Dev and Dampier, who people love coming
- 31:07in from New Mexico out to Utah. The depth at quarterback of this
- 31:11conference, it's nuts. And it's really not a knock on
- 31:13Rocco if you put them six seventh on a list because
- 31:15they're just so many Dang good quarterbacks in this league.
- 31:19Well, yeah, it's you look top to bottom in the Big 12 and I don't
- 31:24even think going into camp, what what are there maybe going to be
- 31:27two quarterback battles going into camp?
- 31:30I mean, what Colorado? I I think that the transfer
- 31:34Salter from Liberty probably gets that job.
- 31:37I think he wins it. Retzloff, Yep, I think Retzloff
- 31:41still sounds like he is going to go ahead and transfer from BYU.
- 31:45So that opens up a training camp battle there.
- 31:47But so, yeah, I think you you look look at most of these
- 31:50teams, they're set at the quarterback position.
- 31:53And I think back what was the 4th was the 4th team, I believe
- 31:58by Phil Steele. And I think, you know, maybe he
- 32:01plays with a little chip on his shoulder thinking he's probably
- 32:05a little better than that. Then you you look at at his
- 32:08numbers like, gosh, put up great numbers that yardage wise
- 32:12touchdowns maybe wanted wanting to cut down on some of the picks
- 32:17this year, the pick sixes that cost Iowa State at times, but he
- 32:21cleans that up. He's going to be the league
- 32:24right? Right along with Levitt from
- 32:26Arizona State. Bill Seals from Cyclone
- 32:28Reporters joining us as he makes his way to Big 12 Media Days
- 32:31which begin tomorrow. So how will he cover it 'cause I
- 32:35think the national media is going to gravitate to the
- 32:37receiver position knowing what they lost.
- 32:40Will, will Campbell kind of temper expectations on Seoul and
- 32:44Townsend? How do you think he handles that
- 32:47question that is sure to come? Because I mean, when you're
- 32:50they're replacing, you know, a second and a third round pick,
- 32:53both by the Texans, 2 guys that had remarkable careers.
- 32:56How does he handle the receiver question?
- 32:59Well, I think probably how you would would expect to maybe
- 33:03temper expectations. He will not want to overlook
- 33:08some of the guys that he's got back in in that receiver room.
- 33:12Eli Green, we're waiting maybe for a little more out of him.
- 33:16Dominic Overby, he, he's 1. You, you look at out outside of
- 33:20those two transfers, Overby might have the highest upside of
- 33:25any of those younger guys coming back.
- 33:27So he'll he'll want to, he'll not want to focus entirely on
- 33:31those two transfers, but just the receiver room in general.
- 33:35And also I think what Chase Seoul missed a little time over
- 33:40the spring as well. I think he was in and out with
- 33:43an injury. So they're, they're wanting to
- 33:45get him back. I'm sure he's 100% right now,
- 33:48but get him back and going through all of training camp
- 33:52once that gets started. Yeah, Eskeldson, he popped when
- 33:55he had his opportunities last year as well.
- 33:57So some depth there, no doubt. Hey, Bill, thanks for jumping on
- 34:00with us. Safe trip down there.
- 34:02We will talk to you once you get back and you can recap it.
- 34:05But in the meantime, we'll read about it.
- 34:06It's cyclonereport.com. cyclonereport.com, part of on
- 34:10three media. Bill Seals joining us.
- 34:12Thank you, Bill. Appreciate it.
- 34:14Thanks guys. Appreciate you having me.
- 34:16Yeah, good to talk to you Bill Seals as we check in on the Iowa
- 34:20State beat with our guy Bill Seals going to be a lot of guys,
- 34:24a lot of radio teams in this building guy going forward to
- 34:27have a field. We're going to be fighting for
- 34:28Bill Seals absolutely. I wouldn't we he's good at what
- 34:31he does. Covered him for a long time over
- 34:33there. We'll take a time out.
- 34:34Trent's plays of the day. They're coming up next circus
- 34:37sports sponsor, though, so you never we couldn't.
- 34:39Bet last week? No.
- 34:40I opened up the app in Florida. Unavailable.
- 34:43Yeah, so we just didn't bet. You all right?
- 34:47You really made it through OK. Yeah, no, no shakes, nothing.
- 34:50Nothing. Yeah, I can give it up.
- 34:52Yeah, when the plane landed, did you make a bet right away or?
- 34:56I did play, did play 2 three things yesterday, went two and
- 35:00one. So we're back on the right side
- 35:01of things. Well done 145.
- 35:04Trent's Plays of the Day. Circus Sports sponsor those.
- 35:07It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:13I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back.
- 35:15Final segment here on a Monday. Off the bench is next.
- 35:18Then tomorrow morning gets underway at six.
- 35:20The first quarter, Heather Burnside and Alec Bussey, who
- 35:23will be live at Big 12 Media Days tomorrow.
- 35:26Heather and Alec tomorrow from six until 9.
- 35:28Dan Patrick pushes back 9:00 to noon, no more Colin Cowherd.
- 35:33We stay in the same time slot. Noon to two.
- 35:35No changes here, but off the bench to until 5:00 with Sean
- 35:39Roberts and Lucas Strain. Well, Trent Circus Sports
- 35:43sponsors your plays of the day. Do you do you recall prior to
- 35:47going on vacation, did you have a winning week?
- 35:50You were putting one together, but I don't remember the last
- 35:52couple of. Days I I think I did, if memory
- 35:54serves, I do have here in my app over the last 30 days plus 12.7
- 36:00units, 48 and 35. That's pretty good with a week
- 36:03off in there. Yeah, we'll definitely take
- 36:05that. If we could stack those up over
- 36:06the course of a year, Yep, and we'd be sitting pretty.
- 36:08Right now, you're one in a row. I'm not going to hold my breath
- 36:12that that's going to happen. I am not a tout.
- 36:16I am not a professional. There are very few people in the
- 36:19world that make money at this. I know the legislation that is
- 36:22concerned some gamblers. I know we have a few listeners
- 36:25that will impact. For most of us guys, it's
- 36:28probably not going to impact us. Nope, that's for sure.
- 36:31That aside, we'll try to bounce back.
- 36:34I got three games tonight, one in the WNBA, 2IN baseball.
- 36:38Let's open things up in Cincinnati for the Reds play
- 36:42host to the Marlins. Marlins played a little bit
- 36:44better over the last. Week and a half, I agree.
- 36:46But the guy that's going today, he's junk.
- 36:49Junk Jansen junk. Brady Singer's perfectly fine.
- 36:53I'll delay the -132 give you the Reds as they look to hang around
- 36:57in the division. Gonna do the same.
- 36:59And it's the old adage for me. You Darvish is taking the ball
- 37:01for the Padres. A guy coming off injury.
- 37:04I like to fade. Zach Allen has been bad for his
- 37:06standards this year. Those look better at times here
- 37:09as of late. I'll grab the plus money, give
- 37:11me the Diamondbacks plus one O 5 there and then to the West where
- 37:16the dream play host to the Valkyries and you actually know
- 37:19where both of those teams play. Yes, because you have become a
- 37:22fan of the WNB. Caitlin Clarke's WNBA.
- 37:24That's right. Give me the Valkyries, that
- 37:26team. They're way better than anybody
- 37:28thought. They're plucky, they're tough.
- 37:31They they don't have a ton of I just they're going to hang
- 37:35around. That dream team, though, is
- 37:36really talented and it feels like they're still kind of
- 37:38meshing at times, but when they click, they can be up there.
- 37:41Speaking of that, the Liberty haven't covered now in 10
- 37:44straight games. They're what eating.
- 37:46Or so is Vegas just setting the number too high because of?
- 37:50I think they're O nine and one ETS in the last 10.
- 37:53Liberty going the wrong way perhaps, or maybe just
- 37:55overvalued. And Fever and and the Valkyries
- 37:57played this week, don't they? I think they do.
- 37:59I think they played later on in the week in Indianapolis.
- 38:04Caitlin will be back. I don't know if she will.
