- 0:05and dare to do things differently Today's best
- 0:08is swinging big and not just on the golf course
- 0:11I'm so excited to welcome Jamie Maori co -founder
- 0:14of she said golf a fast -growing community That's
- 0:17not just about playing the game but about changing
- 0:19it Jamie and her sister Julie grew up around
- 0:22golf But like many women didn't always feel like
- 0:24it was a place for them now They're rewriting
- 0:27the narrative one tee at a time She said golf
- 0:30isn't about scorecards and swing speeds. It's
- 0:33about confidence, connection, and creating a
- 0:35space where women feel welcome, supported, and
- 0:38inspired to try something new. It's about saying
- 0:41yes to the challenges, the awkwardness, the learning
- 0:43curve, and most importantly, to yourself and
- 0:46all it takes to place in a fun and inclusive
- 0:48environment. In addition, Jamie is the owner
- 0:51and founder of Anthem Marketing Group. where
- 0:53they provide strategic branding, social media,
- 0:56and web design. This episode is a hole -in -one
- 0:59for anyone who believes in the power of bringing
- 1:01women together and community. Let's get loud
- 1:04and lifted with the fearless and fun Jamie Mowry.
- 1:19I promise I won't use any more silly golf lingo.
- 1:22Oh, I loved it. I loved it. That was so good.
- 1:25Thank you so much for being here. And as I was
- 1:28saying to you earlier, when I started Loud and
- 1:30Lifted, you were on my short list of guests that
- 1:32I had to have on the podcast because you were
- 1:35doing what I talk about. You're bringing women
- 1:37together and lifting them up and supporting them
- 1:39in a big way, in a fun way. So thank you for
- 1:43doing that. And let's dig into how you even got
- 1:46started with She Said Golf. Yeah so thank you
- 1:50so much for having me and i love how you just
- 1:52said doing enough fun way i think we forget that
- 1:55fun is like the goal of life and we're just you
- 1:58know if we can make money and you know have fun
- 2:01doing it it's just amazing so i'm so glad that
- 2:05you said that because i do really think that.
- 2:07We started with fun in mind. We, as you mentioned,
- 2:11my sister and I grew up around golf, our dad,
- 2:14our mom, our brother, and we would go out and
- 2:16golf with them and we would do lessons when we
- 2:19were younger, but it was always just us and a
- 2:22bunch of boys. All of our friends were playing
- 2:24peel and hockey and softball. We naturally just
- 2:28wanted to do what the rest of our friends were
- 2:30doing. But then when we got into the corporate
- 2:32world, as I know you understand and a lot of
- 2:35women here understand is golf is kind of a big.
- 2:40Deal around corporate a lot of scrambles a lot
- 2:44of tournaments a lot of work goes down on the
- 2:47golf course and My sister and I started getting
- 2:51invited to a lot of those tournaments because
- 2:54they knew that we golfed But then we started
- 2:57hearing from other women like hey, I would love
- 3:00to learn I'm always left out of my company's
- 3:03golf and you know, I I want to do it too. Like
- 3:06how do you learn and We didn't have a solution
- 3:09for them because unless you're a member at a
- 3:12club, there's really no opportunity to go learn
- 3:15golf. And you're not just going to go buy hundreds
- 3:18of dollars worth of clubs and outfits and go
- 3:21get lessons unless you decide if you even like
- 3:23it or not. So we really just kind of said, you
- 3:27know, something about my sister and I is we're
- 3:28just doers. We're just activators. We come up
- 3:31with an idea and we think, you know, like, let's
- 3:33try it out. You know, if it doesn't work. it's
- 3:36okay, but let's just see the interest. And we
- 3:39planned our very first She Said Golf event in
- 3:41May of 2023, and it was just a range meetup.
- 3:44We just met at Liberty Forge. They have a great
- 3:46driving range there. We just invited women that
- 3:49we knew. I think we posted about it maybe once
- 3:51or twice, and we had like over 80 women join
- 3:55us. On the first event. First event. That's amazing.
- 3:59I mean, we had one pro come to kind of help,
- 4:01but we were just We had nothing official. We
- 4:04just said, like, hey, if you want to learn how
- 4:06to golf, come meet us and we're going to just
- 4:08do our best trying to get you into it. So when
- 4:12we saw that turn out, we were like, oh, wow,
- 4:14like this is a need. There is a missing. Link
- 4:20here of women, you know wanting to get involved.
- 4:23Maybe their husband plays their boyfriend plays
- 4:26But they just have never been introduced to it
- 4:29So that's really how we got started with it is
- 4:32just kind of seeing that there was a need out
- 4:34there and Deciding hey, let's just do something
- 4:37and see see if it's see if it works Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:41And you're so right. I mean, that whole story
- 4:43resonates with me. When I was working in corporate,
- 4:46there were all of these golf outings and you
- 4:49either were working or you went to the golf outing.
- 4:51So I'm like, wait, I should learn how to golf.
- 4:53I'm athletic. How hard can it be? And then the
- 4:56first time you pick up a club, you're like, Oh,
- 4:59okay. This is not something I'm just going to
- 5:01be great at and, you know, a few times at the
- 5:04driving range. And that intimidated me because
- 5:06I didn't want to go out and suck and look horrible,
- 5:08especially around a bunch of men who knew what
- 5:11they were doing. So having a place like that
- 5:13didn't exist when I first started golfing, but
- 5:15I would have been I probably would be better
- 5:17than I am now. That's not even about being good.
- 5:21What we mean when we've been out on the golf
- 5:24course and we're the only women is a lot of the
- 5:26men are bad, too. You know, and I think we just
- 5:28have this. mindset of like, oh, if we're bad,
- 5:32we don't belong. And that's, that's crazy. I
- 5:36mean, you never do something once and expect
- 5:38to be good at it, right? Like, you have to practice,
- 5:41you have to go out and try and the thing about
- 5:44these scrambles in these tournaments is you don't
- 5:46have to be good to play in them. I mean, scramble
- 5:48is, you know, you hit the best, whoever's ball
- 5:51was best, you go up and go from there. So I think
- 5:54it's more of like, Feeling the confidence to
- 5:58just go out there and do it because you know
- 6:00the rules, you know what? To hit you know not
- 6:04to step on someone's line like that kind of stuff
- 6:06is what we're really trying to Help women with
- 6:10because at the end of the day men shank the ball
- 6:12to have awful shots You know, it's really that
- 6:16is not that is not you know, but your point it's
- 6:19the confidence and and I did and it's I I still
- 6:22say this, and I've been golfing for how many
- 6:24years, is my goal was just not to suck and be
- 6:27embarrassing. I don't have to be great. I want
- 6:29to hit the ball every once in a while, solid
- 6:31at least, but let's not be embarrassing. That
- 6:34was my bar. They'd rather play with someone who
- 6:38might not be able to hit the ball that well,
- 6:40but they at least know how to keep pace of play.
- 6:43They pick up the ball and just move on. They're
- 6:46fun. That's what people care about. They don't
- 6:49really care if you hit. a ball 207 yards they
- 6:53care if like you kind of understand the concept
- 6:55of golf. Keep a good pace and have fun. That's
- 6:59what I bring. Right. Exactly. It's definitely
- 7:03the fun part of that for sure. So for those who
- 7:05aren't familiar, tell a little bit more. What
- 7:07does She Said Golf all entail? Yeah. So we now
- 7:11do probably 50 events a year and they all range
- 7:16from range meetups. So we try to do a range meetup
- 7:19once a month. We just had our first one of the
- 7:21year last week, which was great. So that entails
- 7:24really showing up to the range. If you don't
- 7:27have clubs, we bring clubs. So that's not an
- 7:29issue. You get unlimited balls. We all hang out
- 7:32underneath the bays. We get a drink. They have
- 7:35food there. We have a couple pros that come to
- 7:37help with your swing. And you really just, it's
- 7:40a great opportunity to just meet women who are
- 7:42also interested in golf. It's super low pressure.
- 7:45And then we do clinics, which is really helpful
- 7:48because we'll, you know, do different specific
- 7:52ones, like an intro to golf clinic or more intermediate
- 7:55clinic, clinics just about like getting it out
- 7:58of the sand. Like we just try to do some nice
- 8:01basic clinics to help. And that's great for all
- 8:03levels, you know, even if you've been golfing
- 8:05for a couple of years, it's it's so great. And
- 8:08then we do some scrambles throughout the year.
- 8:10So, Betsy, I know you've joined us. Yes, the
- 8:13last two. Yes, we do one at the end of the year,
- 8:16which is like a really fun theme. We get whole
- 8:18sponsors and then we give part of the proceeds
- 8:21to girls on the run because we really feel a
- 8:24connection with what they do for young women
- 8:26and what we're doing for. older women as kind
- 8:30of a similar concept of just instilling confidence.
- 8:36So that's where we're at right now in terms of
- 8:39She Said Golf. We're just in central PA, but
- 8:42our reach has expanded through social media,
- 8:45which has been really fun posting there and getting
- 8:48some followers from all over the country. So
- 8:53what you're saying is we need to make this a
- 8:54national thing. I think so. Absolutely. No, and
- 9:00I think to the point about meeting people, because
- 9:03when I first started golfing, I didn't know any
- 9:04other women who were golfing or if they did,
- 9:06I didn't know that they were. So once you started
- 9:08seeing people post or at events, I'm like, oh,
- 9:10wait, you golf? Let's go out. So it gave me someone
- 9:13to golf with because the only poor person who
- 9:16was golfing with me is my husband, which he's
- 9:17patient and didn't care. So it was just having
- 9:20that connection to other people. Like, hey, we're
- 9:22kind of on the same level -ish. Let's go out
- 9:25some Saturday and hit nine. Honestly, Julie and
- 9:27I started it out of selfish reasons because we
- 9:30didn't have any friends that golfed. We were
- 9:32like, there has to be more women out there that
- 9:35can golf or at least are interested. So really
- 9:37that's kind of how it started was like, let's
- 9:40find some other women that golf. Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:43And let's talk about the vibe because you're
- 9:46explaining this all very nicely, but if someone
- 9:47checks out your Instagram, they'll quickly get
- 9:49the vibe. Talk about the vibe when you come to
- 9:51these meetups. Yeah. So Julie and I have played
- 9:55in so many scrambles, so many tournaments, and
- 9:58they are kind of blah. right? I mean, they're
- 10:02just like, kind of the same thing over and over
- 10:04again. And yes, most of them go towards some
- 10:08type of nonprofit. And there's, you know, a meaning
- 10:11behind it, which is wonderful. But it just seems
- 10:14like they're all kind of the same. And Julie
- 10:16and I were like, let's create a scramble that's
- 10:20totally different. That is actually fun to play
- 10:24in. It's funny because a lot of times people
- 10:27say women are slow golfers and we have played
- 10:31in scrambles where it's all men and they take
- 10:33six hours to play. Right. Because everything
- 10:36has to be perfect. Yeah. Our scrambles are opposite.
- 10:39We honestly really care about pace of play. We're
- 10:42like, hey, not playing well, pick up your ball.
- 10:44None of us are going into the LPGA. We're not
- 10:47playing for money. Let's just keep it fun. So
- 10:50yeah, our scrambles are definitely fun. They
- 10:53are play music, have drinks, hit your ball. If
- 10:59it goes five feet, pick it up. Cheer people on.
- 11:04I'm such a big cheerleader at golf, and it's
- 11:07funny when I do play with men. They're like,
- 11:09oh, I'm like, amazing. Great hit. Do that. You're
- 11:12supportive. And they're like, uh, um, so yeah,
- 11:17we, our first one was a Barbie scramble. Um,
- 11:20our, our last one last year was the tea hall.
- 11:23It was a rodeo. We had line dancing. We, um,
- 11:27you know, talking about supporting other women.
- 11:29We really try to. bring other women businesses
- 11:32in. So even like at our last range meetup, we
- 11:34had a young girl who's 18 that started like a
- 11:37bracelet company. So she came and was doing custom
- 11:40bracelets. So we really do try to bring as many
- 11:44women together as possible. Even if you have
- 11:46no association with golf, we've really tried
- 11:49to let everybody kind of join in. You really
- 11:53know how to throw a party and make a theme. I
- 11:55mean, everything I've been to is just so well
- 11:58done that like, oh right, I'm here to golf, but
- 12:00also this is so fun. We can all just hang out
- 12:03and meet people. And you know, while part of
- 12:06it's intended to be that obviously social, but
- 12:09also the business piece, like I've met people
- 12:11that, you know, have certain connections within
- 12:12the market. You're like, oh wait, I need somebody
- 12:14to do this. I know I met this woman at She Said
- 12:16Golf. So it is... professional besides the super
- 12:19fun social part. Yes. I think that's something
- 12:22Julie and I realized right away was the women
- 12:24that were attending our events were really wonderful
- 12:28women, regardless of golf. Like they were realtors,
- 12:33they were financial advisors, they were in the
- 12:35insurance industry, they owned their own businesses.
- 12:38Some were stay at home moms who had just raised
- 12:40their kids and now we're looking for things to
- 12:43do outside of that. So we kind of thought right
- 12:47away. Like this is a huge opportunity for people
- 12:49to get to know each other. We just had our first
- 12:52trip. We did our first she said golf trip over
- 12:56a master's weekend. We went down to Dewey Beach,
- 12:58Delaware. We wanted to play on something where
- 13:00it was close enough to still drive. However,
- 13:03we had women that flew in from Michigan, Florida.
- 13:07We had women from Maryland that had never attended
- 13:10anything. She said golf. So even that was huge
- 13:13of like reaching people. you know, talking about
- 13:16the vibe, they were able to see our vibe from
- 13:18Instagram and know like, oh, OK, we're going
- 13:21to have fun or we're going to fit in, you know,
- 13:23just kind of by seeing that. But we had a group
- 13:27of girls there that all lived in the same neighborhood
- 13:29in Mechanicsburg, but never knew each other.
- 13:32Oh, geez. Oh, that's funny. And they met there
- 13:34and they were like, oh, my gosh, you live on
- 13:35whatever street. And they're like, yeah. And
- 13:38now they're like hanging out. Oh my gosh, they're
- 13:41already together. And I'm like, that is the freaking
- 13:44goal at the end of the day is like that people
- 13:47that live live down the street from each other
- 13:50are now meeting because of she said golf. That's
- 13:52so awesome. And at any event that I've attended
- 13:55to, obviously there's a bunch of women, but it
- 13:58feels so inclusive. There isn't, I mean, sure
- 14:00there's groups of people who may know each other,
- 14:02but it doesn't feel clicky. There's nobody sitting
- 14:05or standing by themselves like awkwardly in a
- 14:07social situation. Everybody's just so warm and
- 14:09welcoming, even if you don't know anybody to
- 14:12go and show up. So the fact that you've been
- 14:13able to build this community that's so authentic
- 14:17and real and like for real supportive, you're
- 14:19right. The amount of cheering that goes on. Maybe
- 14:23not like on the regular golf days, but it is
- 14:27so supportive. And you're right. Somebody has
- 14:29a great shot. You're so proud of your friend
- 14:31or person you just met. Well, because people
- 14:34will say to me like, oh, are you good at golf?
- 14:35And I'm like, sometimes. It's not really something
- 14:40like I'm like, oh yeah, I'm good. No, like some
- 14:42days I'm good. Some days I can't hit the ball.
- 14:44Just like everybody else. Yeah. And I'm so glad
- 14:47you said that about the inclusivity because I
- 14:50think There are groups that say they empower
- 14:53women or they are all about bringing women together.
- 14:57But we grew up with a father who would make us
- 15:00sit at different tables at family functions you
- 15:04know like we would go to Thanksgiving and maybe
- 15:07want to sit together and my dad would be like
- 15:08go sit with your cousin who you haven't seen
- 15:10in a while or we would go to you know an event
- 15:14with him for work and he would say like okay
- 15:17go mingle don't hang out with me you know like
- 15:19this is your opportunity and I really think that
- 15:22that comes across when it you know when it comes
- 15:26to our events is we really are there to like
- 15:28meet people um and to talk to people and to you
- 15:33know learn people's names and you know that that
- 15:36quote like you can lead a horse to water but
- 15:38you can't make them drink like i think all of
- 15:40our women they show up which i'm so proud of
- 15:43them for because that in and itself is hard to
- 15:46you know you sign up one day and you're like
- 15:48oh i'm so excited and then the day comes and
- 15:50all of a sudden you're like Oh, you know, do
- 15:53I really have the social battery? But, um, you
- 15:56know, we have women, I think because they have
- 15:59showed up to our events alone that they get it.
- 16:01And so now they're like, are she said golf ambassadors?
- 16:03Like they walk right up to people when they can
- 16:06tell that they're new and they're like, Hey,
- 16:08what's your name? Have you been golfing? Like
- 16:10what, you know, they really start to try to get
- 16:12to know them. And I think that really is such
- 16:15a big part of it because we've all walked into
- 16:16events where It's like awkward. You know, you
- 16:18walk in and no one's saying hi and no one's and
- 16:22we pretty much do the opposite of that. We're
- 16:23like, hello, hi, what's your name? No, you're
- 16:27so right. And that's that whole, when you're
- 16:30getting comfortable with being uncomfortable
- 16:31and that is any part of your life and social.
- 16:35And I get it. Some people are more extroverted.
- 16:37I'm super extroverted. I have no issue walking
- 16:39into a room and not knowing anybody else. I'll
- 16:41find someone to talk to, but putting yourself
- 16:43out there, going to these events. Oh, and then
- 16:45by the way, picking up a golf club that maybe
- 16:47you've never done before. You're just getting
- 16:49people out of their comfort zone, which to me
- 16:51ultimately just helps you grow, especially talking
- 16:54to new people. Kim said that on our second episode,
- 16:58and she's right, she would yell at us in corporate
- 17:00events if we were sitting with our... coworkers,
- 17:03like go talk to somebody you don't know, put
- 17:05yourself out there. And you never know where
- 17:06those relationships were going to go from in
- 17:09the future. And we all are like two degrees of
- 17:10separation or whatever that saying is. Like you
- 17:12can always find something to talk about or someone
- 17:16that knows somebody. And, you know, it's funny,
- 17:19I am actually, I consider myself introverted,
- 17:22which I don't think anyone else would consider.
- 17:26I know, but I really, I'm super Creative I'm
- 17:31very like I get energy from being alone Where
- 17:35my sister Julie she's extremely extroverted and
- 17:38she gets energy from being with people So I just
- 17:42think it's honestly just like the mindset you
- 17:44put yourself in like if you come to one of our
- 17:46events and meet one person That's a win. You
- 17:49know, you don't have to walk in and try to meet
- 17:51everybody even if you come to one of our beds
- 17:54meet one person and find out how that you were
- 17:57gripping the club wrong and now you know how
- 17:59to grip it right and now you can hit the ball
- 18:01better like we have women that say oh my gosh
- 18:03I came to the range meetup and one of the pros
- 18:05totally all he did was like tell me to move my
- 18:09wrist one way and now I'm hitting the ball so
- 18:12well you know so it's even if you just get like
- 18:15an ounce and we keep all of our events extremely
- 18:18affordable we're just so big on that because
- 18:21the whole Point of she said golf was to make
- 18:24it accessible for everybody you know not everybody
- 18:27especially in today's day and age if a lot of
- 18:29women are single a lot of women you know don't
- 18:31have aren't married with a husband that might
- 18:34normally get that country club membership or
- 18:37they might not want to spend a thousand dollars
- 18:39a month the cost to be a member so we're just
- 18:42like you should be able to learn golf and go
- 18:44golf places without. Having to be a member at
- 18:47a club. So we try to keep it extremely accessible
- 18:50for everybody to join That's a great point. So
- 18:54is anything surprised you about this community
- 18:56that you've built? Surprised me You know, I think
- 19:03that when we are younger we have so many opportunities
- 19:07where we're jumping into new things right like
- 19:09we are learning sports, and it's easy because
- 19:13we're just so ingrained. We're learning new subjects.
- 19:16We're in new classes, and we're just so used
- 19:19to the newness of learning things. And I think
- 19:21as we get older, we get really stuck in, OK,
- 19:25this is what I'm comfortable at. You know, this
- 19:27is my thing. And there is this quote that I love
- 19:30that says, like, what you love, even if you left
- 19:34it, it will welcome you back. So I always think
- 19:37like I used to sing. I can still go sing. There's
- 19:39no reason I need to stop just because I haven't
- 19:42done it in a while. And I think a lot of people
- 19:44think of that when it comes to something like
- 19:46golf, with a lot of women say, oh, I used to
- 19:48play. Or when I was younger, I played. Well,
- 19:52come try again. And I think we just get so stuck
- 19:55in just doing the same things in the routine.
- 19:59And I think you had said earlier, like, it just
- 20:02starts to get you out of your comfort zone. And
- 20:04the way that trickles down into other aspects
- 20:06of life is huge. So that part has surprised me.
- 20:10Like I'll see women, they'll come to some, she
- 20:12said golf stuff. And then all of a sudden there,
- 20:15I see them working out in a new gym and all of
- 20:17a sudden doing all of these new things. We have
- 20:19this one girl, Emily, who we just absolutely
- 20:21adore. And she was one of our. OG, she said,
- 20:24golf girl, she had never golf before. And she
- 20:28now is obsessed with spinning classes and was
- 20:30like, I never would have gotten into spinning.
- 20:33And now she's like doing all of these new things.
- 20:35And she said it stemmed from coming to She Said
- 20:38Golf and like starting to get that confidence
- 20:40of doing all of this other new stuff. So I just
- 20:44think, you know, it's that one thing that that's
- 20:47all it takes. And I've just seen that happen
- 20:50so much with our group. I love that. So that's
- 20:53not positive. And I don't mean to go negative,
- 20:55but has there been negative or not maybe everybody
- 20:59embracing, I guess is the right word outside
- 21:01of this amazing group. Like, is there, you know,
- 21:04clubs or organizations or men? You know, like,
- 21:07what are you guys doing? Men? Yeah, we have not
- 21:11had. Much negativity at all regarding our group
- 21:15internally I think that you know You just kind
- 21:17of find out some of the things that you like
- 21:19or don't like you so what some women are really
- 21:21good now So like some of our clinics don't work
- 21:24for them anymore because they've exceeded You
- 21:28know the intro which is great and we're growing
- 21:31with that and starting to offer some other options
- 21:33for them But yes, the men part I would say that
- 21:39was It's getting a lot better. But one of our
- 21:44reels that really went viral was we were playing
- 21:48at a local course. And within the first half
- 21:52an hour of being there, we got four comments
- 21:55from random men that we were so used to. You
- 22:00know, like Julie and I have heard all of that
- 22:02so many times. But one of the girls that we were
- 22:05playing with was new to she said golf. And she
- 22:08was like, what? Is this normal like this isn't
- 22:12normal and we were like, oh no it is and she's
- 22:14like This is why people are uncomfortable coming
- 22:16to play and you know, the comments were oh did
- 22:19your husband's let you out of the house today?
- 22:23I Don't have a husband, you know, like I Awful
- 22:27comment another one was how much did they charge
- 22:30you to play here? Another one was are they letting
- 22:34you play 18 or are you only allowed to play nine
- 22:37holes today? Oh my gosh like awful comments.
- 22:40And I think Julie and I just let those roll off
- 22:42because we were so used to hearing stuff like
- 22:44that. And the girl we were playing with was like,
- 22:46this is why I would never come golfing. Oh my
- 22:48gosh. Were these older men just curious? Yes.
- 22:51Yeah. But honestly, not, I think it's just such
- 22:55a stereotype that even the younger guys like
- 22:57kind of take that type of talk on as well. And
- 23:03then we've had where the men are like, Hey, I
- 23:05have a daughter who's eight and I want her to
- 23:08get Oh, that's cool. So I would love to like,
- 23:11if you guys are, you know, offer anything for
- 23:13like younger girls. So I think, you know, there
- 23:15is a plethora of, of comments that we have received.
- 23:19I think that is why we were so adamant on like,
- 23:23teaching the rules and keeping pace of play because,
- 23:26you know, we're already going to get the comments.
- 23:30Yeah, I've had that happen too at a club course
- 23:33where they want to go in front of my husband
- 23:35and I because they think I'm going to be slow
- 23:36and sack. I'm like, you have no idea how fast
- 23:38I am, to your point. If I'm having a bad day,
- 23:40picking up that ball and moving on. So I think
- 23:43we did let them go in front of us because I didn't
- 23:45want to be having that pressure the entire time.
- 23:47And they were terrible. They were terrible. I'm
- 23:49better than you. Always happens. Just assuming
- 23:53I wouldn't be able to hang. So that's not frustrating.
- 23:57I think as our group is two years old now, and
- 24:00I just think you do see so many more women at
- 24:03the driving range. And, you know, maybe still
- 24:06not as many on the course, which we're really
- 24:08trying to change that. But I do think it's it's
- 24:11helping a little bit where, you know, we the
- 24:15comments are less and less. But that is just
- 24:19something. And I think if you're not comfortable,
- 24:21we can we can hit the ball far and we still get
- 24:24the comments. So I can only imagine. Yeah, for
- 24:26starting off. But I love when I go to the club
- 24:29and there's the foursome of the older 70s, maybe
- 24:3380s, definitely past 60s year olds golfing and
- 24:36they're out there all the time. And I'm like,
- 24:38so that's amazing that women at that and they're,
- 24:40they're decent, right? So it's amazing women
- 24:42at that age. started probably when it was really
- 24:45not acceptable and here they are. This is something
- 24:47you can do when you're retired and out with your
- 24:50friends or your husband or whatever. Our grandma
- 24:53is 93 years old and she still golfs. Oh my gosh.
- 24:56That's amazing. It's amazing. You see a lot of
- 25:01stuff too of like women mad because their husbands
- 25:03are going to golf or you've seen like, oh, now
- 25:07is it tis the season ladies, your husbands are
- 25:09going to be gone for six hours on a Saturday
- 25:11and you're stuck with the kids. I look at it
- 25:14opposite, like you come to learn how to golf
- 25:17too, so that. The next Saturday, you can be out
- 25:20playing golf with the girls and you guys can
- 25:22switch or you guys can do your date nights. Like
- 25:24my sister and I grew up, our family, that was
- 25:26like a thing we did together, our parents golf
- 25:28together. So we grew up seeing that and seeing
- 25:30how fun that could be, you know, like going out
- 25:33on a Friday night and going to golf and doing
- 25:35a date night. And I think like trying to change
- 25:39that stigma of like, oh, only the men goes in
- 25:41golf and then the woman stays home. Like, no,
- 25:45girlfriend, come golf with us too and learn how
- 25:47to golf or go golf with your husband. So really
- 25:50trying to change that narrative as well. I know.
- 25:53I'm trying to get my teenage daughters into it
- 25:55and they're like, oh, it looks boring. I'm like,
- 25:57let's go try it. Really golfing sure is boring
- 26:00after a while, but like, let's go to the driving
- 26:01range, just hit some balls. So I think I've convinced
- 26:03the younger one to give it another shot. She
- 26:05did it a few years ago, but it is to get them
- 26:07out. Alright, so I have to switch gears a little
- 26:10bit. So you posted on LinkedIn a couple weeks
- 26:12ago, a post that totally resonated with me and
- 26:14kind of sticks with these labels that we give
- 26:17people. And you talked about when you started
- 26:19your career that you were called the marketing
- 26:22girl. Again, I can totally relate. I was totally
- 26:25called the marketing girl. And then you talked
- 26:27about the girl boss label, which same thing.
- 26:30I can't stand it. Like, why are you calling me
- 26:32a girl boss? So why do you think people still
- 26:34use those labels? And then how do you think we've
- 26:37flipped the script on that so that we're helping
- 26:39the next wave of women and our wave to step up
- 26:42to that? Yeah. I think that, you know, I say
- 26:46girlfriend a lot. Like, I'll be talking to someone.
- 26:48I'm like, hey, girlfriend. Hey, girl. Like, I,
- 26:50and I do, I do do that. And I think that it's
- 26:54friendly. I don't think there's anything wrong
- 26:56with the way you want to speak to somebody. But
- 27:00I think professionally, it can be really detrimental
- 27:04to say words like that. So I remember one of
- 27:07my first jobs, I was consistently called the
- 27:10marketing girl over and over and over again.
- 27:13And it was like the head of the company would
- 27:15loop me in on email and say, like, our marketing
- 27:18girl will handle this. And I know deep down,
- 27:23He what he's not a bad person and wasn't doing
- 27:26it. We're saying it to make me feel any sort
- 27:29of way, but it made me feel a sort of way. It
- 27:32made me feel like. I think in this marketing
- 27:38position, I think the position that I that I
- 27:42had and that I even have now is predominantly
- 27:45women that have that are in these social media
- 27:47roles, and I think they have been paid very poorly.
- 27:52these positions because, and I kind of came up
- 27:55in my career where social was very much a thing
- 27:58and no one would listen to me. I would say, you
- 28:01should start posting on LinkedIn. You need to
- 28:03start building your brand on LinkedIn. And I
- 28:05was saying this like 10 years ago. And some of
- 28:07the insurance agents would look at me and say,
- 28:09well, what's the ROI on that? Why would I spend
- 28:12time doing that? What's the ROI? And I would
- 28:14say the ROI is you're posting consistently, putting
- 28:18stuff out there that people are getting to know
- 28:20you again for free. And when their premiums go
- 28:25up and they're having a bad experience with their
- 28:28agent now, they think, oh, that's right. Joe
- 28:32Smith is always posting. I think he's an insurance.
- 28:35I should reach out to him. And it's so funny
- 28:39because now that's all that's out there. People
- 28:41are posting, doing their personal branding all
- 28:43on LinkedIn. So I think I always took it offensively
- 28:46because, you know, the word girl is someone young.
- 28:51someone that probably doesn't have much experience,
- 28:54someone that probably doesn't know what they're
- 28:55talking about. And I always kind of felt like
- 28:58I do know what I'm talking about. My title is
- 29:01marketing coordinator, marketing executive, the
- 29:04marketing manager. those titles are there because
- 29:09I started out as a coordinator and now I'm an
- 29:12executive and now I'm a manager. It's because
- 29:14I'm going up in the ranks and I'm learning more
- 29:17and I have more to give and I have more experience.
- 29:20And by calling me a marketing girl, you're putting
- 29:22me back down to someone that doesn't have much
- 29:25experience and someone that doesn't know a lot.
- 29:28And I think that's the same thing with the girl
- 29:30boss roles. When we're saying girl boss, it's
- 29:34putting it out there that we're different. We
- 29:37are somehow a different type of boss because
- 29:40we're a woman and we're not. We're just the boss.
- 29:43We're just someone that owns the company, that
- 29:45runs the company, that is doing whatever just
- 29:48as a man is. So I think it's critical that we
- 29:52start calling ourselves for what we are and who
- 29:56we are. And I know a lot of people don't even
- 29:58go with titles anymore, which I'm kind of the
- 30:00same. I don't really know what people's titles
- 30:02are, but You better not call me a girl. I'll
- 30:08tell you that much. What happens when they do
- 30:10or for other people? Do you correct them? Do
- 30:11you say, hey? I used to. Yeah. I would say I
- 30:14don't get called. I don't get called a marketing
- 30:17girl anymore, but I also work for myself. So
- 30:20maybe some of my clients might say, oh, we have
- 30:22a marketing girl. I don't really know. I do hear
- 30:26them say a lot more often, like we have a marketing
- 30:28team or we use Anthem to help with our marketing.
- 30:32So I have seen, I don't see it really as much
- 30:35anymore, but I remember when I was called it.
- 30:39started calling my boss out at the time. I would
- 30:42say, like, please. You do have to. You can do
- 30:44it in a respectful way and a nice way, but you
- 30:46do. And I even, not that long ago in my career,
- 30:49had somebody, a consultant who came in and he
- 30:52kept referring to the women on my team as girls.
- 30:55Oh, I gotta talk to the girls. And I'm like,
- 30:56who are the girls? Are you talking about your
- 30:58grandkids? Like, and I said to him, serious,
- 31:00but joking. And he's like, oh, I'm like, they're
- 31:02not girls. They're 30 -some -year -old women.
- 31:05So say the team or whoever, but please don't
- 31:08call them girls." And he was like, oh, so it
- 31:10wasn't malicious, right? I don't think it was
- 31:12intentional, but he just wasn't even aware. Well,
- 31:15until you say it, boys. That's where I think
- 31:18all of a sudden - Let's call the ops boy. Yes.
- 31:21All of a sudden, I think when you say that, all
- 31:23of a sudden men are like, oh yeah, that does
- 31:25sound bad. It does sound bad. Yeah. You wouldn't
- 31:26say, oh, the boys that are sitting over there.
- 31:28You just would never. You would never say it.
- 31:30the more we can just change that of like and
- 31:34you know people will comment on a post of mine
- 31:36or something and say like you're such a girl
- 31:37boss and I wouldn't I don't comment back saying
- 31:39like don't call me that but I think if we can
- 31:42just lead the way and yeah. But we've made that
- 31:46almost like a cool thing. There's, you know,
- 31:48merchandise and there's name tags and people,
- 31:50especially I think when women say it, they do
- 31:52think it's a positive thing. Because again, we've
- 31:54just been programmed to think that that's okay.
- 31:57So I think a lot of times it's never been intentionally
- 32:00to be mean or disrespectful, but it does. And
- 32:03it's the same thing with a girl golfer. Like,
- 32:05no, I'm just a golfer. That's said a lot and
- 32:09that's on merch a lot. Like, oh, this golf girl.
- 32:13What, what's another one that well, it's the
- 32:16same with like where it will say like, you know,
- 32:18hit it like a girl or run like a girl, all of
- 32:20that kind of stuff. When you put that like a
- 32:23girl, you are diminishing what it actually is.
- 32:27Like, no, you're just a golfer or no, you're
- 32:29just a runner. You were just, you know, you don't
- 32:32have to like, verify or make another word for
- 32:38it. You just are a golfer. It's okay. You don't
- 32:41have to be a girl golfer. You can just walk away
- 32:44golfers. Right. It sounds so ridiculous when
- 32:47you say, boy, we talked about this all day. So
- 32:49I'm going to end this with a rapid fire round.
- 32:53So just first thing that comes to your mind,
- 32:54your favorite post or during golf drink. Transfusion.
- 32:59Oh, okay. More intimidating, your first swing
- 33:02or your first business pitch? Swing. Walk -up
- 33:07song if you were teeing off at Augusta? Oh my
- 33:11goodness. That's so good. I have to say Pink
- 33:13Pony Club right now. That's the best song. That's
- 33:16so great. Worst golf advice you'd ever heard?
- 33:20Keep your head down. And one word to describe
- 33:24what golf means to you now? Community. That's
- 33:29perfect. Great. Well, thank you so much for being
- 33:31here and thank you for sharing She Said Golf.

- 34:43So definitely LinkedIn and website for Anthem
- 34:45Marketing because you clearly know how to build
- 34:47brands. I mean, that's what you've done with
- 34:50She Said Golf. So congrats to you. Thank you.
- 34:52Thanks, Betsy. Big thanks to Jamie for reminding
- 34:55us what real leadership looks like. It's not
- 34:57just about winning ourselves. It's about making
- 34:59room for more women to get in the game. Jamie's
- 35:02not tearing from the sidelines. She's building
- 35:03a course, handing out the invites and saying,
- 35:05let's go have fun together. She said golf is
- 35:08more than a brand. It's a movement to show up,
- 35:11to try something new, to feel awkward, but to
- 35:13belong anyway. Say yes to the things that challenge
- 35:16you and yes to supporting the women. If you're
- 35:19waiting for a time to try something new, this
- 35:22is it. Grab the club, start the business, take
- 35:24the leap. If you like this episode, please subscribe,
- 35:27leave review, and share it with the women in

- 35:34just a vibe, it's a power play. Keep getting
- 35:36loud and lifted.
