- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. The Bayvert Peninsula is mourning after two
- 0:09Speaker 2: tragedies in one day. Area MHA Lynn Paddock says the
- 0:14Speaker 2: area suffered the loss of two people yesterday, one in
- 0:18Speaker 2: a house fire in Rattling Brook, the other while fishing
- 0:21Speaker 2: in Westport. In a post to Facebook, Paddock says the
- 0:25Speaker 2: fish harvester ran into trouble with a load of squid
- 0:28Speaker 2: near his home wharf. It's the second fishing tragedy in
- 0:31Speaker 2: the area this summer. Two men died last month after
- 0:34Speaker 2: their vessel capsized near the small community of Harbor Round.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Paddock sends his condolences to the families and friends of
- 0:41Speaker 2: those lost in yesterday's incidents. At least three people are
- 0:46Speaker 2: dead and 558 are missing after a glacial collapse that
- 0:50Speaker 2: caused devastating floods in Tibet, while at least 162 people
- 0:54Speaker 2: have been killed by flash floods in Nepal. Chinese officials
- 0:59Speaker 2: say 260 of those missing in Tibet are foreigners, and
- 1:02Speaker 2: two villagers have been rescued. Nepal says hundreds of people
- 1:06Speaker 2: are missing, and those include at least 24 Canadians, along
- 1:10Speaker 2: with dozens of people from India, the United States, Australia,
- 1:14Speaker 2: and Britain. Quebec Premier Christine Frechette is expected to pay
- 1:18Speaker 2: a visit to that province's lieutenant governor today, officially kicking
- 1:23Speaker 2: off the Quebec election. Normally, a general election in our
- 1:26Speaker 2: neighboring province would only garner marginal political interest in Newfoundland
- 1:30Speaker 2: and Labrador, but arguably, this election is different. Expect the
- 1:34Speaker 2: Churchill Falls Agreement announced in St. John's earlier this month
- 1:38Speaker 2: to be among the province's election issues. Some questions had
- 1:41Speaker 2: previously been raised about the future of the agreement should
- 1:44Speaker 2: Quebecers choose to elect a new provincial government. However, the
- 1:48Speaker 2: separatist Parti Quebecois, which last week was leading in the polls,
- 1:52Speaker 2: is not expected to put the deal, which has yet
- 1:55Speaker 2: to be finalized, in jeopardy. The party's separatist agenda also
- 1:59Speaker 2: appears to have been put on the back burner for
- 2:01Speaker 2: the time being, given the uncertainty created by the trade
- 2:04Speaker 2: war with the United States. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says
- 2:09Speaker 2: all options are on the table and he's willing to
- 2:11Speaker 2: cut electricity exports to the United States if the trade
- 2:15Speaker 2: war continues to escalate, but says he can't go it alone.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Ford made the comments during a housing announcement in Bonn yesterday.
- 2:23Speaker 1: We need a Team Canada approach and I'd be happy
- 2:27Speaker 1: within the provinces to lead that approach. If this escalates
- 2:33Speaker 1: and we can't get back to the table... and he
- 2:35Speaker 1: keeps coming after us. All options are on the table,
- 2:38Speaker 1: in my opinion, but I can't do it alone. We
- 2:40Speaker 1: have other provinces that send electricity down to the U.S.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We all have to be on the same page.
- 2:46Speaker 2: A report issued Tuesday estimates the impact on American families
- 2:50Speaker 2: from the counter-tariffs. Details now from ABC News White House
- 2:54Speaker 2: correspondent Karen Travers.
- 2:56Speaker 3: The Yale Budget Lab said that it's about $ 1, 100 right
- 3:00Speaker 3: now for the typical American household per year, the impact
- 3:03Speaker 3: of all the tariffs, and that includes what he had
- 3:05Speaker 3: put into effect over the weekend. So this is having
- 3:08Speaker 3: a real impact on American consumers in terms of what
- 3:11Speaker 3: we're seeing in potential price increases.
- 3:15Speaker 2: The College of the North Atlantic says it's premature to
- 3:17Speaker 2: speak of its plans for skilled trades courses to meet
- 3:21Speaker 2: anticipated increased demand for projects related to Churchill Falls. The
- 3:26Speaker 2: institution was responding to an inquiry from VOCM News about
- 3:30Speaker 2: plans to add or increase its skilled trades offerings given
- 3:34Speaker 2: the planned megaprojects. It says it's committed to communities in Labrador,
- 3:38Speaker 2: noting that its campuses serve as vital educational and community
- 3:42Speaker 2: hubs in the region. CNA states it has a long
- 3:45Speaker 2: history of responding to industry and community needs and will
- 3:48Speaker 2: monitor the situation to ensure it can support the growth
- 3:51Speaker 2: and prosperity of Labrador and the province as a whole.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Marine Atlantic has taken ownership of its newest vessel. Last January,
- 4:00Speaker 2: the Crown Corporation announced it had entered into a five-year
- 4:03Speaker 2: lease with Stena to acquire the vessel, which has been
- 4:06Speaker 2: named the Eel Rouge. Colin Thibault, the VP of Service
- 4:10Speaker 2: and Innovation at Marine Atlantic, says the ship is currently
- 4:14Speaker 2: in Gibraltar.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Once that happens, we have some of our Marine Atlantic
- 4:19Speaker 4: crew in Gibraltar. They will be part of the voyage
- 4:24Speaker 4: to North Sydney. And that'll be the beginning of the
- 4:27Speaker 4: familiarization process for the crew that are on board. So
- 4:31Speaker 4: assuming we sign in the next few days, the vessel
- 4:34Speaker 4: will be en route and it will probably take six
- 4:36Speaker 4: to seven days to get to North Sydney.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Thibault says the plan all along has been for the
- 4:40Speaker 2: Eel Rouge to go into service mid-October when the Blue
- 4:44Speaker 2: Petise goes on dry dock. Someone in this province is
- 4:48Speaker 2: waking up $ 5 million richer. A ticket purchase online for
- 4:52Speaker 2: last night's Lotto 649 draw ended up getting all the
- 4:56Speaker 2: right numbers for the classic draw jackpot. Atlantic Lotto will
- 5:00Speaker 2: have more details on the winner once they come forward.
- 5:03Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
