- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon men's basketball coaches show. Another addition
- 0:04Speaker 1: as we get into twenty twenty six. Along with Dan
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hurley on Mike Chrispino, the Husky's in a major role.
- 0:09Speaker 1: They've won nine in a row, thirteen and one, have
- 0:12Speaker 1: not lost a game in six weeks, and recently won
- 0:16Speaker 1: a couple on the road to kick off a big
- 0:18Speaker 1: East play three and ohero right now, So Dan, let's
- 0:21Speaker 1: just begin with the new Year's resolution thing, because just
- 0:25Speaker 1: get it out of the way. Everybody's talking about this. You,
- 0:29Speaker 1: as a coach of this team right now, do you
- 0:32Speaker 1: have a new Year's resolution for this club? Because you
- 0:35Speaker 1: don't want to mess around with the rhythm that this
- 0:38Speaker 1: thing is rolling at the tempo of the way things
- 0:40Speaker 1: are going. Yet you always know there's something that could
- 0:44Speaker 1: be improved on.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, about about seven things or ten things?
- 0:47Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, a New Year's revolution resolution? Yeah, no,
- 0:54Speaker 3: every day. I mean you're I mean, you know all
- 0:57Speaker 3: of your team's vulnerabilities, and for us, there's multiple you know,
- 1:00Speaker 3: Transition defense, Uh, transition has not been where it needs
- 1:04Speaker 3: to be. We've we've turned the ball over like crazy.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You know, at times, we've been leaky with our ball
- 1:10Speaker 3: screen defense, I think our inside game on offense could
- 1:14Speaker 3: be uh uh, you know, could be a lot better.
- 1:16Speaker 2: We have an.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Offensive rebound the ball the way uh you know that
- 1:20Speaker 3: we have in the past. You know, the obviously you
- 1:25Speaker 3: want to be able to stay healthier than we've been, which.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You know some of that is is uh.
- 1:30Speaker 3: You know how guys, you know, prepare recovery, pre practice routine.
- 1:35Speaker 3: They stretched out, you know, they stretching well enough before
- 1:38Speaker 3: they get to the coaches, you.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Know, so you're never happy.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I mean I'm rarely happy.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about winning on the road here, because
- 1:49Speaker 1: you've said this and everyone knows it's not easy. I
- 1:52Speaker 1: don't care where you're playing. First of all, Depoul fell
- 1:55Speaker 1: behind by eight early in that game and then outscored
- 1:59Speaker 1: uh the Blue Demons sixty five to thirty nine from
- 2:03Speaker 1: there on. Getting back to that point in that game,
- 2:06Speaker 1: if you would tell us what happened, how did you
- 2:09Speaker 1: get guys back on the track to get that thing
- 2:12Speaker 1: under control?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Well, you know, I think the Paul's better than they've been.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I mean, they're better, you know that then they've been,
- 2:20Speaker 3: you know since I've been in the league playing against them,
- 2:23Speaker 3: So you know that they're they're you know, they they're
- 2:27Speaker 3: a team that could give you trouble, you know, especially
- 2:31Speaker 3: when you were you know, doing what we were doing,
- 2:34Speaker 3: you know, offensively, just struggling to get any type of
- 2:38Speaker 3: execution or sharpness to us, and then you know, having
- 2:44Speaker 3: some defensive mistakes.
- 2:46Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:46Speaker 3: So I just think, you know, we were able to
- 2:50Speaker 3: you know, at least get into halftime, you know, with
- 2:53Speaker 3: the lead, and then you know, establish some separation, execute,
- 2:59Speaker 3: and you know, they give them credit. They played really hard,
- 3:02Speaker 3: they played very physical, but they also got in foul
- 3:05Speaker 3: trouble and they just couldn't sustain the intensity level for
- 3:09Speaker 3: a full forty minutes that they did probably for the
- 3:11Speaker 3: first ten.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Chris Hopeman in a second year there in Chicago,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and then Xavier the other night. I mean, talk about that, Dan,
- 3:21Speaker 1: because it was like textbook eleven minutes of basketball. Because
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yukon jumped out thirty three to eight, led by twenty five.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I mean, you couldn't ask for much more in terms
- 3:31Speaker 1: of offensive execution and defensively as well. It's hard to
- 3:35Speaker 1: sustain that for forty minutes, am I right?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's hard to sustain it.
- 3:39Speaker 3: And then you know, because I thought that we you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: we continue to get the same type of quality of shots,
- 3:46Speaker 3: just you know, we didn't continue.
- 3:48Speaker 2: To make them. And then Silas, you know, in a.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Half where Malachi was probably as bad as he's been
- 3:55Speaker 3: this year, you know, and he's he's bailed this out
- 3:59Speaker 3: in a lot of games and saved us, but he
- 4:01Speaker 3: was he was really bad in that first half for Xavier,
- 4:04Speaker 3: and and Silas just putting himself in foul trouble again.
- 4:10Speaker 3: You know, I probably should have went to Milander, probably
- 4:12Speaker 3: should have put Alec in the game and given him
- 4:14Speaker 3: a look in the first half when Silas was in
- 4:17Speaker 3: foul trouble and Malachi was struggling, And I think that
- 4:21Speaker 3: that played a role in us losing, you know, the momentum.
- 4:26Speaker 3: But yeah, I thought we played at a pretty high level.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, taking advantage of Xavier under Richard Pertino in his
- 4:33Speaker 1: first year there, restructuring his team, transfers all over the place.
- 4:39Speaker 1: This era that we're in for guys, you know, if
- 4:43Speaker 1: you were starting over again in another program or even
- 4:46Speaker 1: thinking about your coming to Yukon eight years ago, it's
- 4:48Speaker 1: a different story now. And it seems to me the
- 4:52Speaker 1: head coaches around the country are taking the transfer Portland
- 4:55Speaker 1: trying to you know, manipulate it immediately to get themselves
- 4:59Speaker 1: up on their and running. How difficult is that to
- 5:02Speaker 1: do in a year one or year two of any
- 5:04Speaker 1: program you come into.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Not as difficult as it was when I took over
- 5:08Speaker 3: this job, or not as difficult as it was when
- 5:11Speaker 3: I took over at Rhode Island or Wagner, when I
- 5:14Speaker 3: took over teams that were really bad and you couldn't
- 5:17Speaker 3: flip the roster. Yeah, so yeah, I mean part of
- 5:21Speaker 3: me is, like, you know, wishes we were in the
- 5:24Speaker 3: prior era where you had to build it organically, through
- 5:28Speaker 3: recruiting classes, through developing young players, through building a roster,
- 5:32Speaker 3: and having an imagination over time of how to put
- 5:36Speaker 3: it together a team that could compete for championships.
- 5:40Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Part of me is obviously that that time is it's
- 5:44Speaker 3: never going to exist again. Being a college coach, it
- 5:50Speaker 3: used to be a kind of a special skill set
- 5:52Speaker 3: you had to have to be successful in this position,
- 5:56Speaker 3: which now you can buy your way out of Oryah,
- 6:01Speaker 3: or just buy your way out of it, or just
- 6:03Speaker 3: recruit finished products through the portal and just spend a
- 6:08Speaker 3: lot of.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Money that way.
- 6:09Speaker 3: So part of me is, you know, I look at
- 6:11Speaker 3: my overall record as a coach because we all do
- 6:13Speaker 3: peak at it. You know, I think my first of
- 6:17Speaker 3: you my first year or two records that I've had
- 6:20Speaker 3: to kind of take as a head coach, My overall
- 6:23Speaker 3: record would look a lot different if if I started
- 6:27Speaker 3: my career during this portal era, I wouldn't have had
- 6:31Speaker 3: to kind of kind of just take it in year
- 6:33Speaker 3: one at places like Rhode Island, Yukon of Wagner, I
- 6:39Speaker 3: could have flipped the roster and had a more talented team.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:42Speaker 1: By the way, you're doing pretty good. You won one
- 6:44Speaker 1: hundred and twenty eight of your last one hundred and
- 6:46Speaker 1: sixty one. That's eighty one percent winning percentage. That's tremendous.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Quick thought on the Big East right now you can
- 6:54Speaker 1: four and one against top twenty five teams, but the
- 6:56Speaker 1: rest of the league really struggling. Dan one and eleven. Uh,
- 7:01Speaker 1: how much does that have to change? You think in
- 7:02Speaker 1: January and February to get this league, you know, up
- 7:05Speaker 1: on his feet and challenging for NCAA bids.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Well, I don't think there's a changing it now. I
- 7:11Speaker 3: mean the the uh just the situation now. I mean obviously, uh,
- 7:17Speaker 3: you know, you got Saint John's and you got Nova, uh,
- 7:20Speaker 3: and you got seat in the Hale who you know
- 7:24Speaker 3: potentially could play their way into uh you know, maybe
- 7:27Speaker 3: being ranked. I know a couple of those teams are
- 7:30Speaker 3: have won a lot of games, uh you know, and
- 7:33Speaker 3: and are gonna win a lot of games in the
- 7:34Speaker 3: Big East.
- 7:35Speaker 2: So this is the potential there.
- 7:36Speaker 3: And uh, obviously Creighton's a much different team now with
- 7:40Speaker 3: what they're doing in the Big East. But you know,
- 7:43Speaker 3: like when you have bad nets net rankings, uh, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 3: with with your conference and you bring those into conference play,
- 7:51Speaker 3: those are gonna cause problems relative to the amount of
- 7:56Speaker 3: teams that get in and the seating. Uh. You know,
- 8:01Speaker 3: that's just in terms of being able to protect each
- 8:04Speaker 3: other in league relative to NCAA tournament, getting teams in
- 8:09Speaker 3: and seeding. That's when that comes back to really bite
- 8:12Speaker 3: you and haunt you when you have, you know, teams
- 8:15Speaker 3: that are capable of winning games in your league with
- 8:18Speaker 3: bad nets. You know, because quad threes and quad four
- 8:22Speaker 3: losses are very very costly.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Thanks Dan, more of the Yukon men's basketball coaches show
- 8:27Speaker 1: coming up in just a moment on lear field
