- 0:47Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking
- 0:53Speaker 1: you to spend a few moments of your time with
- 0:55Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's work with notes, quotes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and stories along with some of his own personal experiences,
- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:07Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. In Lamentations,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Chapter three, verses twenty two and twenty three, we read,
- 1:16Speaker 1: because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed,
- 1:19Speaker 1: for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Great is your faithfulness. Now, if you miss a portion
- 1:26Speaker 1: of today's broadcast or would like to recommend it to
- 1:29Speaker 1: a friend, you can hear this program anytime online at
- 1:32Speaker 1: Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I assure you, the one who believes in me will
- 1:44Speaker 2: also do the works that I do, and he will
- 1:47Speaker 2: do even greater works than these, because I am going
- 1:52Speaker 2: to the Father John fourteen twelve. We have looked at
- 1:58Speaker 2: all of the reasons for or the fight that we
- 2:02Speaker 2: are involved in as we have studied war and victory
- 2:07Speaker 2: the Christian by the Faith in review, I want to
- 2:10Speaker 2: cover a few items that have been asked as questions
- 2:16Speaker 2: in the how to of the fight. We've covered the
- 2:23Speaker 2: armor of God thoroughly. We've covered all of the aspects
- 2:28Speaker 2: of our weaponry. When we covered the earlier part of
- 2:35Speaker 2: an inspection list, we said that we must have, according
- 2:40Speaker 2: to Ephesians chapter six and verses thirteen through eighteen, we
- 2:46Speaker 2: must have the helmet of salvation, the girdle or belt
- 2:50Speaker 2: of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, gospel shoes of peace,
- 2:56Speaker 2: the shield of faith, sword of the Spirit, and pray
- 3:00Speaker 2: in the spirit. And we ask the question if we
- 3:05Speaker 2: are familiar with these seven perfect parts of God's holy armor.
- 3:11Speaker 2: We inspected them, we discussed them, and we have already
- 3:16Speaker 2: evaluated their importance in our fight. And so we come
- 3:23Speaker 2: to a portion of this particular study where we need
- 3:28Speaker 2: to understand the equipping of the saints, in other words,
- 3:34Speaker 2: the equipping of the believers to do the work of ministry.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Jesus said in the earlier scripture that we read that
- 3:45Speaker 2: he assures us that the one who believes in him
- 3:51Speaker 2: will also do the works that I do, and he
- 3:54Speaker 2: will do even greater works than these, because I am
- 3:59Speaker 2: going to the Father. Now. He follows that particular comment
- 4:05Speaker 2: with the description that the Holy Spirit is going to
- 4:09Speaker 2: come because he's leaving here physically. Jesus is going to
- 4:16Speaker 2: send the Holy Spirit so that he can teach us,
- 4:21Speaker 2: lead us, guide us, and empower us to do the
- 4:26Speaker 2: works that Jesus did. And so we come to one
- 4:33Speaker 2: of the transitional parts of this total study. It has
- 4:39Speaker 2: to do with baptism. Do you know that many people
- 4:45Speaker 2: go into a church and in facilities today there are
- 4:50Speaker 2: many areas that they utilize this particular portion from the
- 4:57Speaker 2: standpoint of even joining a church, becoming a member of
- 5:02Speaker 2: a church, or recognizing that you were a member from
- 5:07Speaker 2: perhaps another church and maybe you've moved into that area. Regardless,
- 5:13Speaker 2: the area that most people refer to when they talk
- 5:18Speaker 2: about baptism is water baptism, and of course water baptism
- 5:26Speaker 2: is a very important part of our Christian growth. There
- 5:32Speaker 2: is still a more important baptism. Now, I'm not going
- 5:39Speaker 2: to cause a debate. I just want to bring to
- 5:43Speaker 2: you the scripture that substantiates it, because when you look
- 5:49Speaker 2: at what has taken place historically, you're going to be
- 5:54Speaker 2: able to see that the baptism in the Holy Spirit
- 6:00Speaker 2: is the power of God to cause the performance of
- 6:06Speaker 2: the works that Jesus did to continue, and even greater
- 6:12Speaker 2: works than those that he did when he was here
- 6:17Speaker 2: in the flesh. How can that be? Well, as history
- 6:22Speaker 2: marches on, we have many lessons that we've learned, and
- 6:26Speaker 2: there are also many that have been forgotten. You know,
- 6:29Speaker 2: in the times of the early Christian Church, they were
- 6:33Speaker 2: somewhat different than today. The known world was governed by Rome.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Many people were slaves to Roman tyranny. But all people,
- 6:44Speaker 2: either under a tyrant's rule or free, were then and
- 6:50Speaker 2: are still in need of a savior. Jesus Christ, our
- 6:55Speaker 2: Lord and Savior, came to this earth to establish his kingdom.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Now he said his kingdom was not of this world
- 7:06Speaker 2: John eighteen thirty six. He said his kingdom was in
- 7:12Speaker 2: each of his believers. Now he did not give his
- 7:16Speaker 2: life to change the government of people, but to change
- 7:21Speaker 2: the people themselves. You can find in John fourteen twenty
- 7:27Speaker 2: and one John four and verse fifteen the substantiation of
- 7:34Speaker 2: the Kingdom of God being brought to this earth establishing
- 7:40Speaker 2: a new kingdom. Now, what does all this have to
- 7:45Speaker 2: do with the baptism in the Holy Spirit, We folks,
- 7:48Speaker 2: that has everything to do with it. Let's look at
- 7:51Speaker 2: the scripture. Jesus said in John fourteen twelve that the
- 7:55Speaker 2: works that he performed here on earth would be exceeded
- 7:59Speaker 2: by his believers. The prophet Joel foretold a time when
- 8:05Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit would empower believers to perform supernatural acts.
- 8:12Speaker 2: The prophet was found to have said that in Joel
- 8:16Speaker 2: chapter two in verses twenty eight and twenty nine. The
- 8:20Speaker 2: actual performance of that particular prophecy became evident in Acts
- 8:29Speaker 2: chapter two and verses sixteen through eighteen. Why is the
- 8:35Speaker 2: Gospel so powerful? In the Book of Romans, the apostle
- 8:39Speaker 2: Paul states that he is not ashamed of the Gospel
- 8:44Speaker 2: or the good News of Jesus Christ, for it the
- 8:48Speaker 2: good news realized is power for salvation to the Jews
- 8:55Speaker 2: first and to the Gentiles. That's in Romans verse sixteen.
- 9:01Speaker 2: After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to many of his believers
- 9:06Speaker 2: and instructed them to wait for this power before they
- 9:11Speaker 2: went out to witness or share of the gospel. You
- 9:14Speaker 2: can find Jesus speaking this in Luke chapter twenty four
- 9:19Speaker 2: and verse forty nine and Matthew twenty eight, verses sixteen
- 9:24Speaker 2: through twenty. These early Christians were everyday folk, some regarded
- 9:30Speaker 2: as simple fishermen and uneducated. They needed a different type
- 9:36Speaker 2: of power to effectively influence others to believe the good News.
- 9:43Speaker 2: They needed Holy Spirit power. Are we any less in
- 9:49Speaker 2: need today? Read Acts four and verse thirteen. Jesus knew
- 9:56Speaker 2: that these early Christian followers would face an unfriendly and
- 10:01Speaker 2: persecuting world, and that they would need supernatural power to
- 10:06Speaker 2: live and die for their faith. Luke twenty one, verses
- 10:10Speaker 2: twelve through fifteen states this very purpose. Jesus knew that
- 10:18Speaker 2: much of the persecution would come from religious people. He
- 10:22Speaker 2: also knew that non believers of all governments would feel
- 10:26Speaker 2: threatened by this gospel with its life changing power. Now
- 10:31Speaker 2: we come to the real question. Was this power isolated
- 10:36Speaker 2: or was it for all? Jesus gave all Christian believers
- 10:41Speaker 2: his instructions in his early ministry in the Temple. He
- 10:47Speaker 2: explained the power or the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
- 10:52Speaker 2: He read from the Book of Isaiah, opening the scrolls,
- 10:56Speaker 2: and he showed he was empowered or anointed by the
- 11:00Speaker 2: Holy Spirit to preach to the poor, to heal the
- 11:04Speaker 2: broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, recovery of
- 11:09Speaker 2: sight to the blind, and to set at liberty the
- 11:13Speaker 2: hurt or bruised, and to preach the acceptable year of
- 11:20Speaker 2: the Lord. This was directly from Isaiah's prophecy Isaiah sixty one,
- 11:28Speaker 2: verses one and two. We find that Jesus quoted this
- 11:32Speaker 2: in the temple gathering. In Luke four and verses eighteen
- 11:38Speaker 2: and nineteen, John the Baptist spoke of the Holy Spirit baptism,
- 11:44Speaker 2: not water baptism. He said that Jesus would be the
- 11:50Speaker 2: baptizer read Luke three sixteen. John the Baptists saw for
- 11:56Speaker 2: himself this power, in the form of a visible dove,
- 12:02Speaker 2: descended upon Jesus, and he heard the voice of God
- 12:06Speaker 2: proclaim that Jesus was his son. You find this in
- 12:12Speaker 2: Matthew chapter three and verses eleven through seventeen, and also
- 12:17Speaker 2: in Luke chapter three, verses twenty one through twenty two.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Jesus began his earthly ministry full of the power of
- 12:28Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit, and he overcame all of Satan's temptations
- 12:34Speaker 2: found in Luke four, verse one. Why is it significant well,
- 12:40Speaker 2: let's look at the difference between water baptism and the
- 12:46Speaker 2: Holy Spirit baptism. Water baptism is external. It's applied to
- 12:53Speaker 2: us as believers, so that we can let others know
- 12:59Speaker 2: that we have received Jesus as our Lord and savior.
- 13:06Speaker 2: So if it's externally applied to the body, then what
- 13:11Speaker 2: is it that creates the power inside of the body.
- 13:17Speaker 2: You know, we have found in many cases people have
- 13:23Speaker 2: looked at baptism strictly in the capacity of water. Water
- 13:30Speaker 2: baptism is important. It demonstrates our willingness to die to
- 13:35Speaker 2: sin and follow Jesus in the new life that he gives.
- 13:41Speaker 2: The key lesson is our willingness to be his disciple
- 13:47Speaker 2: and his witness to the world. But without the Holy
- 13:52Speaker 2: Spirit baptism, which is internal, you are not and I
- 13:58Speaker 2: am not able to do the works that Jesus did.
- 14:05Speaker 2: You see. The difference is the way that perhaps we've
- 14:10Speaker 2: been taught. If you believe water baptism follows the salvation process,
- 14:18Speaker 2: then of course you're going to proceed with water baptism,
- 14:24Speaker 2: and that is important. But being baptized does not empower us.
- 14:31Speaker 2: What I'm saying is being baptized in water signifies an
- 14:38Speaker 2: internal change. We have surrendered to Jesus. We are now
- 14:45Speaker 2: acknowledging that we are dead to sin, buried with Him
- 14:50Speaker 2: in baptism, and then when we come out of the water,
- 14:55Speaker 2: we are in that same resurrection. That 's experience. Here
- 15:03Speaker 2: is the difference. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is
- 15:08Speaker 2: not external or on the body, but internal with a
- 15:13Speaker 2: fire that will burn away or purge our old nature,
- 15:20Speaker 2: and it empowers us to walk by faith.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.
- 15:28Speaker 1: But if you've just joined us, you've been listening to

- 16:09Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Folks, I want you to understand the baptism in the
- 16:17Speaker 2: Holy Spirit was not a historical event that took place
- 16:24Speaker 2: only for a few believers. It continues throughout our Christian life.
- 16:34Speaker 2: We as believers, in order to fight the good fight
- 16:39Speaker 2: of faith, must have the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
- 16:46Speaker 2: It is this baptism that empowers us to be those
- 16:54Speaker 2: who do the Word rather than just hear the Word.
- 17:00Speaker 2: In this manner, we are used of God to be
- 17:06Speaker 2: those disciples that continue His work here on this earth.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And because of that empowerment, we are able to take
- 17:18Speaker 2: the Gospel, which Paul says is the power of God
- 17:25Speaker 2: unto salvation, to the jew Verse and also to the Greek.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And that is today's Reflection on the Word.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Thank you Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
