- 0:36Speaker 2: Hi everybody, and welcome back to Hooded. What now the
- 0:39Speaker 2: history podcast that's not your history class? Betty Sued little
- 0:43Speaker 2: bits of history that don't and anywhere else with me
- 0:47Speaker 2: your host Katie Charlwood Horse again and reader of books. Well,
- 0:53Speaker 2: there's currently a storm raging. We lost electricity, we couldn't
- 1:00Speaker 2: heat our houses, we ran out of water, and many
- 1:05Speaker 2: trampolines were lost this week, so even the schools closed,
- 1:09Speaker 2: which really tells you something. And we were warned yet again,
- 1:14Speaker 2: don't make unnecessary journeys, don't take risks on treacherous roads,
- 1:19Speaker 2: and don't swim in the sea. That's a reach ways
- 1:24Speaker 2: a man in joke for there. So this week, as
- 1:29Speaker 2: it turns out, I have been irritating a lot a
- 1:34Speaker 2: lot of gammons because people don't like it when you
- 1:38Speaker 2: point out what a piece of trash. Winston Churchill was.
- 1:41Speaker 2: It was really funny to me is that people seem
- 1:44Speaker 2: to think, generally men, an overwhelming amount of white men,
- 1:51Speaker 2: have felt the need to come and tell me a
- 1:54Speaker 2: how amazing Winston Churchill was, and b that I'm a communist.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm like, sir, I'm a Republican, an Irish Republican, by
- 2:05Speaker 2: the way, not an American Republican.
- 2:08Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:09Speaker 2: No. And I've found this whole situation really funny because
- 2:14Speaker 2: yet again, women aren't making these comments, apparently stating that
- 2:20Speaker 2: massacring a bunch of innocent civilians because you don't like
- 2:24Speaker 2: communism is neither a good plan nor an ethical way
- 2:29Speaker 2: of being. Because I'm anti Churchill, they seem to think
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'm pro Stalin and listen, I've seen pictures of young
- 2:36Speaker 2: Stalin with his mustache and his beautiful, beautiful face, but
- 2:41Speaker 2: he's also a class a cunt, and frankly, I'm not
- 2:46Speaker 2: really into people who are into genocide, you know what
- 2:49Speaker 2: I mean. Thank you for your opinions. Boys, It's gonna
- 2:53Speaker 2: feel my fire for a long time. For Like, one
- 2:56Speaker 2: of the guys who was arguing with me played polo,
- 3:00Speaker 2: well now not water polo, because I could I could
- 3:03Speaker 2: accept water polo, I mean on a horse with that
- 3:08Speaker 2: weird croquet mallet thing polo like Prince Charles played polo.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I I I'm sorry, but for some reason, I don't
- 3:19Speaker 2: seem to think you understand the struggle of the common
- 3:22Speaker 2: man or woman or gender non exclusive person when you
- 3:26Speaker 2: play fucking polo. What the only acceptable polo is a mint?
- 3:32Speaker 2: And even then you're on thin nice. So naturally, I
- 3:36Speaker 2: wanted to talk about an incident during the Cold War
- 3:40Speaker 2: to clarify the Cold War was less of a war
- 3:44Speaker 2: and more of a dick measuring contest. But anyway, let
- 3:48Speaker 2: me tell you about this story, this glorious, fantastic story
- 3:55Speaker 2: which sounds like it was made up but actually happened. Okay, So,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, quit your
- 4:02Speaker 2: gibber jabber in fact me, In fact you, I will,
- 4:06Speaker 2: But first we have to get her source on. Okay.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So our sources come from Encyclopedia Astronautica by Mark Wade,
- 4:16Speaker 2: for able Star from Gunter Space page by Gunter Grebs,
- 4:20Speaker 2: Orbital Debris a chronology from NASA. So between nineteen sixty
- 4:29Speaker 2: in nineteen sixty five, America created this expendable launch system
- 4:34Speaker 2: made up of PGM seventeen for mysels and like this
- 4:38Speaker 2: able Star upper stage, what does that mean? I'm not
- 4:42Speaker 2: entirely sure. I'm not a rocket scientist. And because of
- 4:45Speaker 2: this it was known as for Epsilon and the much
- 4:49Speaker 2: cooler name of for Ablestar, which okay, okay, say what
- 4:55Speaker 2: you want about America, they name things with pride and confidence.
- 5:00Speaker 2: So over this five year period, the US launched nineteen
- 5:04Speaker 2: for able Star rockets, four of which failed, one of
- 5:10Speaker 2: which we're going to discuss today. Technically to the second failure,
- 5:14Speaker 2: the mission was to send up a navigation satellite for
- 5:18Speaker 2: the US Navy on the thirtieth of November nineteen sixty. Unfortunately,
- 5:24Speaker 2: this didn't go too well. You see, as the rocket
- 5:27Speaker 2: was heading up, it signaled trouble before it got too high,
- 5:31Speaker 2: and as such the US were like, fuck this for
- 5:35Speaker 2: a game of soldiers and hit the self destruct button,
- 5:38Speaker 2: thus resulting in a controlled explosion of the rocket. And
- 5:43Speaker 2: that's an issue in itself. The second issue was that
- 5:47Speaker 2: the rocket blew up over Cuba, surprisingly close to guint
- 5:52Speaker 2: Animal Bay, and the debris from this rocket they start
- 5:56Speaker 2: falling down with like chunks and pieces on the Sweet
- 6:01Speaker 2: Sweet soil of Cuba. Naturally, a rocket exploding over a
- 6:07Speaker 2: country that you know, you invaded at one point and
- 6:11Speaker 2: that you currently had a very strange relationship with probably
- 6:14Speaker 2: not a good idea zero out of ten would not recommend.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So yeah, war was threatened because this is an international incident. Also,
- 6:24Speaker 2: in addition, furthermore, the Cuban government just starts collecting all
- 6:30Speaker 2: of these pieces of the missile, all of this debris,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and subsequently sells it. So so the pieces off to
- 6:39Speaker 2: shall we say, enemies of the US. Shall we say
- 6:43Speaker 2: enemies of the US. So they send Thor's engine off
- 6:47Speaker 2: to the USSR and the thrust vectors go to China.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So in general, this is an embarrassment for the US
- 6:58Speaker 2: and a fucking win for Cuba. However, it's not all
- 7:03Speaker 2: fun and games, because Fidel Castro files a complaint with
- 7:07Speaker 2: the United Nations because this explosion, this incident with the
- 7:12Speaker 2: thor Ablestar rocket he believed was and I quote, further
- 7:18Speaker 2: evidence of Yankee aggression. You see, this may seem like
- 7:23Speaker 2: a victimless situation, but there was one victim, a cow
- 7:27Speaker 2: named Rohana. Yes, you see, America killed a Cuban cow
- 7:32Speaker 2: with a failed satellite launch. As a result of this,
- 7:36Speaker 2: hundreds of students, hundreds of students congregate outside the American
- 7:42Speaker 2: embassy in Cuba, and they are straight up protesting this.
- 7:47Speaker 2: They are they are chanting with cows or without cows,
- 7:53Speaker 2: the revolution war win, and it's part of the protest.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Is this fucking good is part of the protest. They
- 8:01Speaker 2: bring cows and bulls with them with the One of
- 8:09Speaker 2: the cows has a sign that says, Eisenhower, you murdered
- 8:14Speaker 2: one of my sisters. They put a sign on a cow.
- 8:18Speaker 2: So after this, the information gets like a little vague,
- 8:22Speaker 2: little obtuous. Allegedly, the US, the United States of America,
- 8:29Speaker 2: paid Cuba two million dollars in compensation for the death
- 8:35Speaker 2: of Rohina the cow, at least that's the official take
- 8:39Speaker 2: on it. That's that's quite a chunk of change for
- 8:42Speaker 2: like a bovine. That's quite a chunk of change for
- 8:46Speaker 2: you know, a bovine creature. And it has been suggested
- 8:51Speaker 2: that maybe just maybe it was less to do about,
- 8:55Speaker 2: you know, killing the cow. It was less about the
- 8:58Speaker 2: cow casualty and more about the fact that it violated
- 9:02Speaker 2: the nation's airspace and didn't want to be accused of
- 9:06Speaker 2: war crimes. And my favorite part of the story. What
- 9:10Speaker 2: my favorite favorite part of the story. Apparently Rohina the
- 9:16Speaker 2: Cow Cuba. Okay, Cuba gave Rohena the Cow a state funeral,
- 9:25Speaker 2: Like that's fantastic, that is I really hope that's true.
- 9:30Speaker 2: If anybody knows anybody from Cuba who may remember the
- 9:34Speaker 2: state funeral of Rohina the Cow, please let me know
- 9:39Speaker 2: because I really want that to be true. Oh okay.
- 9:42Speaker 2: At the end of the day, Oh yeah, Like to
- 9:45Speaker 2: prevent this incident from happening again, all future or Able
- 9:50Speaker 2: Star launches had their flight paths like modified so that
- 9:54Speaker 2: they would avoid passing over Cuba because a they didn't
- 9:59Speaker 2: want to have another incident and b they really didn't
- 10:03Speaker 2: want Cuba selling off their technological advancements anywhere. My voice
- 10:10Speaker 2: is starting to go again. Oh geez, So I will
- 10:12Speaker 2: actually chat to you next time. So we'll talk next
- 10:17Speaker 2: time and join me again on Tuesday where we will
- 10:22Speaker 2: have another full episode where it will be time for
- 10:25Speaker 2: a new episode and I'm actually really excited about this one.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Don't forget you can follow me on my social media
- 10:30Speaker 2: who head what now pod? And uh yeah, don't forget
- 10:35Speaker 2: to rate a review of five stars, petty me for
- 10:37Speaker 2: my lack of voice, and uh yeah, I'll chat. I'll
- 10:42Speaker 2: be back on Tuesday with more fun filled facts and
- 10:45Speaker 2: history stuff. Adios or of wait to them, my friends.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Bye bye,
