- 0:39Speaker 3: for thanks so much for tuning in on this beautiful
- 0:43Speaker 3: cool of quite frankly Wednesday morning. Larry Dawson is in
- 0:46Speaker 3: studio with me this morning. Larry, the morning. How you
- 0:48Speaker 3: doing this morning? Good morning, It's the man when you
- 0:52Speaker 3: get there. And I noticed that there was one day
- 0:54Speaker 3: last week I noticed it, but certainly yesterday stood a
- 0:57Speaker 3: certain way of the win. The win came a certain way.
- 0:59Speaker 3: You could feel that autominal air wage is starting to
- 1:02Speaker 3: manifest a little bit. Not a bad time.
- 1:05Speaker 4: This has been a blistering hot summer and I think
- 1:09Speaker 4: regardless of what occupation you have, you're probably going to
- 1:15Speaker 4: welcome fall or this dropping temperature. You know, you can
- 1:18Speaker 4: only sit in air conditioning so long right now. And
- 1:21Speaker 4: I understand you're in this building and this air and
- 1:23Speaker 4: all that, but when you walk outside that scorching heat
- 1:26Speaker 4: in your tennis shoes or whatever shoes you have, or
- 1:30Speaker 4: I mean, it's been unbarely hot. This is my first
- 1:35Speaker 4: summer of what's called semi retirement or twilighting my career.
- 1:39Speaker 4: So there was a lot of things outside I wanted
- 1:41Speaker 4: to do. And after all those years at the automobile dealership,
- 1:49Speaker 4: I've been spending some time at Snowshoe because I just
- 1:52Speaker 4: could not take this heat, you know, speaking of the
- 1:55Speaker 4: automobile dealership we have and I try to speak of
- 2:01Speaker 4: what's new at the Stevens Auto Center of Nitro, and
- 2:05Speaker 4: Stevens has just recently took on to new employees, and
- 2:10Speaker 4: there I went over and introduced myself to them, and
- 2:13Speaker 4: nice young men, nice young men. But Jody Johnson is
- 2:17Speaker 4: the sales manager and he's hired on Charles Steele, and
- 2:21Speaker 4: Charles I believe might have worked at the other store,
- 2:24Speaker 4: but very young man and very very personal. He'll do well.
- 2:28Speaker 4: And a gentleman been naming land in use and he's
- 2:31Speaker 4: in cells and they will be assisting the code to
- 2:35Speaker 4: Lee that works there. So if you're down around Nitro
- 2:37Speaker 4: and you're looking for an automobile, Steven's Auto Nitro, they're
- 2:41Speaker 4: there six days a week, almost reverted back to what
- 2:45Speaker 4: I used to say, six days a week from nine
- 2:48Speaker 4: to six. And these young gentlemen. As matter of fact,
- 2:51Speaker 4: I walked in. I'm not sure Charles knew exactly who
- 2:54Speaker 4: I was. You know, I wear a ball cap a
- 2:56Speaker 4: lot and I didn't have a ball cap horn. He
- 2:57Speaker 4: kind of looked and said, could I help you, sir?
- 3:00Speaker 4: I'm beyond help. There's no hope. But what I would
- 3:04Speaker 4: like to say is that with the opportunity of these
- 3:07Speaker 4: two young people that's coming to work for the Stevens
- 3:11Speaker 4: Auto Group, which is located in Damville with their Ford
- 3:15Speaker 4: Christ store in Princeton with their Missu busy store Chase
- 3:20Speaker 4: I think heads up Oak Hill with Steven's Chevrolet. I
- 3:24Speaker 4: believe that's kind of his headquarters. And they have a
- 3:27Speaker 4: super center in Beckley, they have one in Somersville and
- 3:30Speaker 4: their newest location is a spot I previously occupied for
- 3:33Speaker 4: many years, located in Nitro, and so easy for me
- 3:37Speaker 4: to remember that numbers that in DO seven four sixty four.
- 3:41Speaker 4: They recently had their new sign put up. It's very nice.
- 3:44Speaker 4: It replaced my sign and that's okay. My sign's laying
- 3:48Speaker 4: around back and I think JOJ said, if I wanted,
- 3:50Speaker 4: I could take it the money end up down to
- 3:52Speaker 4: farm we might have a little sign. But where I'm
- 3:56Speaker 4: going with this, I want to thank Larry Summit. Larr
- 4:00Speaker 4: worked with me for eighteen years plus or minus beside me,
- 4:07Speaker 4: hand in hand and co worker, helping we move metal together.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Larry retired Friday, and he spent the last seven months
- 4:19Speaker 4: assisting Stevens getting showing them where all the bodies was buried.
- 4:24Speaker 4: But he stayed orned allow them. But Larry, you know,
- 4:27Speaker 4: Larry had hit that age that I had hit, and
- 4:30Speaker 4: unfortunately we're all going to get that decision making age
- 4:33Speaker 4: come regardless of what it is that you think I'm
- 4:36Speaker 4: going to slow down or do something a little different.
- 4:39Speaker 4: But Larry was faithfully with me, missed very very I
- 4:44Speaker 4: mean he and I were workers. I mean we did
- 4:46Speaker 4: not miss work. I know there was days that he
- 4:48Speaker 4: came in he probably didn't feel real well. There was
- 4:51Speaker 4: days I come in I didn't feel real well, but
- 4:54Speaker 4: that you could walk in to the store and find
- 4:57Speaker 4: to Larry's. But he he retired. I did not get
- 5:02Speaker 4: to go over and say goodbye to him. But Larry
- 5:05Speaker 4: is a dumbar residence. I've referred to him many times
- 5:08Speaker 4: on here as the Chili Cookoff champion, nicknamed him Chilly Head.
- 5:13Speaker 4: He's very active and very competitive in the arena of
- 5:18Speaker 4: chili cooking. He has even judged the worlds. He lives
- 5:21Speaker 4: in Dunbar with his wife, Missy. They together they have
- 5:27Speaker 4: three boys. They have Thomas and Brent and Jimmy. So
- 5:32Speaker 4: Larry will be able to spend more time with his
- 5:36Speaker 4: children and his grandchildren. And he's a boater like myself.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I do not occupy I own a boat now, but
- 5:45Speaker 4: Larry was there and he was part of the institution,
- 5:48Speaker 4: and I owe to him and the listening audience. You know,
- 5:53Speaker 4: if you stop by, unfortunately Larry won't be there. But
- 5:55Speaker 4: Larry's going on the other side to enjoy himself. And
- 6:00Speaker 4: so thank you Larry for spending I mean, I believe
- 6:03Speaker 4: it was eighteen years and you know I was in
- 6:05Speaker 4: business thirty seven years, so that's half right, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 4: that's fifty percent. So in you know, there was challenging times.
- 6:15Speaker 4: There was the eight nine wine down of some dealerships
- 6:20Speaker 4: and I called the nuclear Winter. We went through it together,
- 6:24Speaker 4: and then the COVID of twenty twenty. You know, we
- 6:28Speaker 4: were able to stay together and work through the obstacles
- 6:35Speaker 4: that was head of us. So that was it was
- 6:37Speaker 4: good to have someone like that. Donnie Dunphy and Chris
- 6:41Speaker 4: Ellis is still there doing a wonderful job. Actually, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 4: when you no longer are the owners and Stevens Auto
- 6:51Speaker 4: Group of Nitro, they employee those two individuals, but we're
- 6:55Speaker 4: just a fence apart. In other words, I've got a
- 6:57Speaker 4: little office over there and I talked to them daily
- 7:01Speaker 4: and the relationship it has changed, but it's changed in
- 7:06Speaker 4: a really good way. It never was bad, that makes sense.
- 7:09Speaker 4: So they're a part of that group and they're they're
- 7:12Speaker 4: they're entrenched in the Stevens Auto of Nitro group and
- 7:16Speaker 4: I'm I am just so happy to see that is
- 7:19Speaker 4: that they're committed. The only different I mean, we still
- 7:23Speaker 4: wave at each other in the morning, say hey Donnie,
- 7:25Speaker 4: Hey Chris, but it's uh. You know, when I do
- 7:29Speaker 4: come in, i won't be there for a few days.
- 7:30Speaker 4: I'm headed to the mountains because it's going to get
- 7:32Speaker 4: hot again. Good timing, but I just wanted to take
- 7:37Speaker 4: just a segment of the show, and uh, and and
- 7:40Speaker 4: thank Larry for his years of working with me and
- 7:44Speaker 4: beside me and kind of having my bike at times
- 7:48Speaker 4: when I needed that. So good luck to you, Larry.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Good luck Larry. You've mentioned him throughout the year many times.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Is the other Larry?
- 7:56Speaker 4: The other? Well? I think, and I may be wrong,
- 7:59Speaker 4: and I believe. I started to show in O two
- 8:03Speaker 4: ish and I did every show except in my memory
- 8:09Speaker 4: was too and one of them I was having emergency surgery.
- 8:14Speaker 4: And I called Larry and Larry and never I don't
- 8:16Speaker 4: even think he knew where the station is. I said, look,
- 8:19Speaker 4: I said you got to go do the show. And
- 8:23Speaker 4: I think Dave Harmon and I said, look, they'll walk
- 8:28Speaker 4: you through it. It's okay, don't you'll be You'll be fine.
- 8:32Speaker 4: And that was in Eleaven, I believe, And he came
- 8:35Speaker 4: in and did it, and I got better and stumbled
- 8:39Speaker 4: in here and continued to show.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Well, heck, there's been there's probably people that's been in
- 8:43Speaker 3: radio for like a decade or so that doesn't have
- 8:45Speaker 3: as much airtime as you have.
- 8:47Speaker 4: True, that's true. It's it's been in experienced and and
- 8:52Speaker 4: it's it's what I like about the organizations you have here,
- 8:56Speaker 4: which is a very well run machine, is that I'm
- 9:00Speaker 4: still taken back by a couple of times that Chases
- 9:04Speaker 4: came in and did the show, and he did it
- 9:06Speaker 4: very well. Is that people come up and say, man,
- 9:09Speaker 4: I missed you and ready, and I thought, wow, they
- 9:12Speaker 4: were really were really listening.
- 9:14Speaker 3: People are out there, man, people are out there.
- 9:16Speaker 4: But I get asked now that and I've said this
- 9:20Speaker 4: a lot more questions because I feel I think people
- 9:24Speaker 4: feels that they're less obligated since I'm no longer the
- 9:28Speaker 4: dealer there, and so they'll ask me questions they probably
- 9:31Speaker 4: wouldn't ask me prior because they felt obligated. If I asked,
- 9:35Speaker 4: maybe I should look and you know, maybe I'll feel
- 9:38Speaker 4: bad if I don't buy or sell to him. And
- 9:41Speaker 4: that never was an issue. I've always tried to help.
- 9:43Speaker 4: But I tell you that the question is the growing
- 9:46Speaker 4: of inventories, you know, by pre pandemic days and if
- 9:51Speaker 4: you drive by the automobile dealerships. There is a lot
- 9:54Speaker 4: of inventory and the old saying of supply and demand,
- 9:59Speaker 4: and that is what drives price, whether its upwards or downwards.
- 10:04Speaker 4: You know, during the COVID days, not only the automobiles
- 10:08Speaker 4: where they at all time record lows, they were at
- 10:11Speaker 4: all time record highs and pricing and it was supply
- 10:14Speaker 4: and demand. Well, the demand I think is still there,
- 10:18Speaker 4: but to supply has increased to the point it has
- 10:23Speaker 4: it has reached the peakness for the demand.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Well, I remember when we were doing a show in
- 10:28Speaker 3: the middle of all of this supply chain problems and
- 10:31Speaker 3: everything else, you kept on saying the demand is out
- 10:34Speaker 3: there and the supply will be too. As soon as
- 10:36Speaker 3: X chip gets made or whatever it might be. There's
- 10:38Speaker 3: tons of inventory ready to be deployed. Well, that ended
- 10:40Speaker 3: up happening. There was tons of inventory that got deployed.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Well, automobiles and then they've went food change. I mean
- 10:45Speaker 4: there has been there has been a lot of technology
- 10:49Speaker 4: added to vehicles. Chase explained though a month or so
- 10:54Speaker 4: ago when we was doing the show, and he's much
- 10:57Speaker 4: more advanced than I am. I mean I'm technically, but
- 11:01Speaker 4: you're going to see and I think you're seeing is
- 11:04Speaker 4: the softening of prices and maybe the rebates, the lesser
- 11:10Speaker 4: interest rates that is driven by the manufacturer to entertain
- 11:15Speaker 4: the consumer, to get them back into the showroom. And
- 11:19Speaker 4: you know, this isn't the first time I've said this
- 11:21Speaker 4: or seen this. I mean, I've been an automobil business
- 11:24Speaker 4: a long time. It is no different from any other commodity.
- 11:27Speaker 4: It's supply and demand. I mean, you can just pick
- 11:30Speaker 4: a product, you know, if there's a shortage, if there's
- 11:33Speaker 4: a with say a disturbance in a supply chain of anything,
- 11:38Speaker 4: you're going to see price increases. But once again, it's
- 11:41Speaker 4: the supply and demand. So the automobile world and I
- 11:45Speaker 4: am seeing it. And I still read a lot in
- 11:48Speaker 4: the evenings that the day's supply, which is very very important.
- 11:53Speaker 4: And I tell the consumer out there, of the potential consumer,
- 11:56Speaker 4: follow the day's supply, and that will tell you that
- 12:00Speaker 4: about the pricing if you might be expecting a rebate,
- 12:04Speaker 4: maybe an incent of some sort. And there is different
- 12:07Speaker 4: products out there right now. I believe Twyota and Honda
- 12:11Speaker 4: probably has the least day supply. I read an article
- 12:14Speaker 4: the night before last that they were down to a
- 12:16Speaker 4: thirty day supply, and it seems like that's where they've
- 12:20Speaker 4: been running. And that's a really efficient number. That is
- 12:23Speaker 4: an extremely efficient number. I don't know then are workings.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I don't know why, but I can count. You know,
- 12:30Speaker 4: when you drive by TWYDA or a Honda store, they
- 12:32Speaker 4: seem like they don't have triple stacked. Now. Stillentis, which
- 12:37Speaker 4: is the old christ Or probably has the most day supply,
- 12:40Speaker 4: especially in the Ram truck division. I believe I saw
- 12:44Speaker 4: the number of one hundred and forty seven days. That
- 12:47Speaker 4: is way over than what I think the manufacture probably
- 12:51Speaker 4: feels comfortable with. And so we're back to the day's
- 12:56Speaker 4: pre COVID of there is going to be maybe too
- 13:00Speaker 4: many of certain items in the automobile business, or certain
- 13:05Speaker 4: brands or certain segments of it. It seems like all
- 13:09Speaker 4: of a sudden there is a tremendous amount of Jeeps,
- 13:14Speaker 4: a lot of Jeeps, a lot of Rams. I have
- 13:17Speaker 4: noticed that there is an uptick, a very substantial noticeable
- 13:23Speaker 4: uptick in used wranglers. Interesting, I've seen that. Well, that
- 13:28Speaker 4: tells me that probably the fleet lease, probably the rentals company,
- 13:32Speaker 4: has dropped a lot of lot of vehicles out there.
- 13:36Speaker 4: In the market. And what does dealers need. They need inventory,
- 13:40Speaker 4: and when there's a lot of them, it's probably at
- 13:42Speaker 4: a lesser price. So if you've been a Wrangler fan
- 13:46Speaker 4: and you've been waiting, I think if you go out
- 13:48Speaker 4: and venture out and look in that area, you're going
- 13:51Speaker 4: to see a price decrease. Now, did the bottom fall out?
- 13:54Speaker 5: Know?
- 13:55Speaker 4: Has there been a decline in pricing? Probably, and the
- 14:00Speaker 4: segment of the automobile world. I don't think you're going
- 14:03Speaker 4: to see the escalation of prices again, unless we have
- 14:07Speaker 4: a disturbance. But I don't think you're going to see
- 14:09Speaker 4: an avalanche a price. You're going to see a subtle decline.
- 14:14Speaker 4: And you know, today's probably the best day, as I
- 14:17Speaker 4: tell people, you know when they ask me, what's the
- 14:19Speaker 4: best day? You know what? When should I buy a
- 14:21Speaker 4: card us at today? Let's do it right now? Because
- 14:25Speaker 4: books do change, Valuations change, and as we go towards
- 14:30Speaker 4: the end of the month, we dealers that goes to
- 14:33Speaker 4: certain formats to form our valuation. And which is the
- 14:40Speaker 4: Nada books, the Black Books, There's JD. Powers, there's Mannheim Reports,
- 14:45Speaker 4: there are so many evaluations. There's this thing that I did,
- 14:48Speaker 4: don't use because I couldn't afford it. It was very expensive.
- 14:51Speaker 4: It's called the auto. The auto has it depends on
- 14:57Speaker 4: how much you want to pay for their stairstep. They
- 15:00Speaker 4: have a lot of lot of valuations as to the market,
- 15:04Speaker 4: the penetration evaluation, how many day supplies on air. I
- 15:09Speaker 4: would occasionally call a friend or to a mine that
- 15:14Speaker 4: is in the new car stores that had the availability
- 15:17Speaker 4: to that, and I said, hey, could you I would
- 15:20Speaker 4: you use this words? Could you tell me what your
- 15:22Speaker 4: machine says about this? And I would send them the
- 15:24Speaker 4: vend number and it's surprising the amount of information they
- 15:30Speaker 4: could give me back. Now, once again, as a small
- 15:33Speaker 4: independent I could not afford the the it was quite expensive.
- 15:39Speaker 4: But it's a tremendous amount of data that is combined
- 15:45Speaker 4: that you can pay for because you don't know what
- 15:48Speaker 4: day supply is out there or use now. You can
- 15:51Speaker 4: go to now and you can pretty much google that,
- 15:54Speaker 4: but to day supply in what maybe you might be
- 15:56Speaker 4: potentially buying or trading for, you know, you might want
- 16:00Speaker 4: I want to steer on the edge of caution. If
- 16:02Speaker 4: there's a large day supply, I'll bet you and I
- 16:06Speaker 4: don't have But if you go to VI Auto, and
- 16:08Speaker 4: you look at Wrangler. There's a lot of day supply
- 16:11Speaker 4: right now. Very interesting, a lot of day supply. But
- 16:15Speaker 4: on the other side, I recently purchased a suburban from
- 16:22Speaker 4: a gentleman here in Charleston, a businessman. And it was
- 16:25Speaker 4: a high end suburban. It was a high country. It
- 16:28Speaker 4: was a very very nice suburban. It was a late
- 16:30Speaker 4: model and you know those suburbans are ninety thousand ish
- 16:34Speaker 4: news And I called my friend once again with VI Auto.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I said, tell me what about the suburban. He said,
- 16:41Speaker 4: that's kind of short supply. So and that did not
- 16:45Speaker 4: surprise me that that was because you know, you take
- 16:49Speaker 4: the multi passenger utility SUV. You know they still are.
- 16:57Speaker 4: You don't see quantities of those. You're ta is, your navigators,
- 17:01Speaker 4: your expeditions, what what we're called, what I call is
- 17:05Speaker 4: the big, big full size sport utilities. And they've had
- 17:10Speaker 4: this segment, it seems like Chevelet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, they've
- 17:16Speaker 4: had that segment. Yukon. Uh, you know I own a Yukon, Jeff,
- 17:21Speaker 4: Jeff Jeff Jeff said, Jeff jeffries from station. Jeff has
- 17:27Speaker 4: a uk originally, but when you get in that that vehicle.
- 17:32Speaker 4: That is a nice sized vehicle, and you know they're
- 17:36Speaker 4: they're a little pricey. But that's what I'm saying. We
- 17:39Speaker 4: have a call, Yeah, we do.
- 17:41Speaker 3: We have Jerry that's called in from South Charleston's morning
- 17:43Speaker 3: once or from Charleston. I'm sorry, Jerry, good morning. How
- 17:45Speaker 3: you doing this morning?
- 17:46Speaker 4: Good morning, Good morning, Jerry.
- 17:48Speaker 5: I hope I haven't asked this question before, but my
- 17:51Speaker 5: curiosity is getting the best of me. Several years ago,
- 17:55Speaker 5: a new car entered the market that had never been
- 18:00Speaker 5: seen before, and I wanted one. So on January the
- 18:05Speaker 5: twenty ninth, I made a deal with a dealer out
- 18:09Speaker 5: of state. I had to do that because no one
- 18:12Speaker 5: in the state had this particular vehicle. So I traded
- 18:19Speaker 5: my car for this vehicle. We made the deal over
- 18:22Speaker 5: the phone, and I said, well, it's I think it
- 18:27Speaker 5: was like the twenty ninth, maybe the thirtieth, I can't
- 18:30Speaker 5: remember now, but anyway, of January, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Let me back up of December of December, December, okay, straight,
- 18:41Speaker 5: all right? So I said, look, you know, I've got
- 18:44Speaker 5: a couple of things coming up. I can be there
- 18:46Speaker 5: about the second or third of January and they said,
- 18:53Speaker 5: let me call you right back. And about ten minutes
- 18:56Speaker 5: they called back, says, we will deliver your car on
- 19:01Speaker 5: uh New Year's Eve, New Year's Eve, and I said, ELK, great,
- 19:07Speaker 5: has saved me a trip from having to drive to
- 19:09Speaker 5: Kentucky and get my car and drive it back. So
- 19:13Speaker 5: on New Year's Eve they delivered that car to me.
- 19:18Speaker 5: And I was always curious, what is that with car
- 19:22Speaker 5: dealers from one year to the next, a twenty four
- 19:25Speaker 5: hour period, mind you, that they had or wanted to
- 19:31Speaker 5: deliver that car before the first of the year. And
- 19:36Speaker 5: I hope you understand my question.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Oh I got it, yes, and.
- 19:39Speaker 5: I'll take I'll take your answer off.
- 19:41Speaker 4: I can tell you Jerry before you hang up. Yeah,
- 19:45Speaker 4: I was supposed to pick up and you're gonna know
- 19:47Speaker 4: this name, Jerry Litl. Yesterday he was flying in town
- 19:50Speaker 4: and you did an article about the pop plane trial
- 19:53Speaker 4: and you'll recognize that name. But unfortunately his plane got delayed.
- 19:57Speaker 4: But Jerry was coming to Charleston. He has a new
- 20:00Speaker 4: book coming out. Oh really, yes, yes, yes, but he
- 20:07Speaker 4: unform his plan got held up in Atlanta, so he's
- 20:10Speaker 4: not coming in. But he was coming into town. Now,
- 20:12Speaker 4: I want to answer Jerry's question automobile manufacturers in the
- 20:18Speaker 4: dealer relation. A lot of it has to do with
- 20:21Speaker 4: numbers and incentives. In other words, if you hit a plateau,
- 20:25Speaker 4: a Stairstep plateau, or an allocation number, you're going to
- 20:30Speaker 4: retro I receive money back. Now what it is that's
- 20:33Speaker 4: between the manufacturer and the dealer, But they have an
- 20:37Speaker 4: incentive to push vehicles. And who always wants to be
- 20:40Speaker 4: number one? Everybody wants to be number one, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 4: everybody wants to be the number one truck dealer, number
- 20:45Speaker 4: one SUV dealer, number one, number one, number one. Will
- 20:48Speaker 4: you count it from January one to December thirty one.
- 20:51Speaker 4: So that was one more that they could get on
- 20:54Speaker 4: and that dealer probably was pushing for that incentive. They
- 20:58Speaker 4: may even have hit their incentive number to retro back.
- 21:02Speaker 4: When I say retro, they were going to get a
- 21:05Speaker 4: rebate from the manufacturer back to the dealer. There's normally
- 21:09Speaker 4: incentives that goes from the manufacturer to the dealer or rebase.
- 21:14Speaker 4: It goes from the manufacturer to the consumer. And we've
- 21:18Speaker 4: heard the word rebate as long as you and I
- 21:20Speaker 4: have been around. There's a rebate of some sort. Well
- 21:24Speaker 4: that's what they were doing with Jerry. They probably had
- 21:27Speaker 4: a number to hit to receive a bonus. It's called
- 21:31Speaker 4: a bonus. I think we all can we know what
- 21:33Speaker 4: bonuses are. We all work toward bonuses. That they were
- 21:37Speaker 4: going to receive money. And if they punched it sold,
- 21:41Speaker 4: and that's the word that new car stores use. We're
- 21:43Speaker 4: going to punch it sold. And once you punch a
- 21:46Speaker 4: car sold, you cannot unpunch it. You know, maybe the
- 21:50Speaker 4: deal fell through, Well you've already you've already punched it sold,
- 21:53Speaker 4: and so whatever money that is going to be received
- 21:57Speaker 4: is going to be received, but you don't get to
- 21:59Speaker 4: do it twice. So if the deal falls through, So
- 22:02Speaker 4: they wanted to shore up to make sure Jerry Walters
- 22:05Speaker 4: was going to receive this vehicle, they could punch it
- 22:07Speaker 4: sold so he could receive his car and they could
- 22:10Speaker 4: receive their money. I do get asked, you know, I
- 22:14Speaker 4: said jokingly that people ask me when's the best time
- 22:17Speaker 4: to buy a car? Well, my old sales experience today,
- 22:20Speaker 4: we're still right now, right this moment. Because I happen
- 22:23Speaker 4: to be here, you happen to be here, and the
- 22:25Speaker 4: automobile happens to be here, So what better time could
- 22:27Speaker 4: it be. Now, that's the selling Larry, but in realistic
- 22:31Speaker 4: And I told my little brother this, davefol yesterday we
- 22:35Speaker 4: were talking. I said that last week in December. That's
- 22:38Speaker 4: the push because everybody wants that one more, and it
- 22:42Speaker 4: comes down to it, they want more. I don't because
- 22:48Speaker 4: I was not a new car store. I'm not privileged
- 22:50Speaker 4: to a lot of manufacturer dealer relation. But I can
- 22:54Speaker 4: read and most of that is public, and so what
- 22:57Speaker 4: I'm sharing with you you can easily google and probably
- 23:00Speaker 4: get the same answer.
- 23:01Speaker 3: And frankly, it's a really great example of everything working
- 23:05Speaker 3: out for everybody. Yeah, I mean really, the manufacturer of
- 23:08Speaker 3: the automaker was happy because they sold another unit. The
- 23:10Speaker 3: salesperson was happy because they made their bonus or whatever
- 23:13Speaker 3: it is, and the incentive to make that cell before
- 23:15Speaker 3: the end of the year provided Jerry with great customer service. Yes, So, frankly,
- 23:19Speaker 3: that's just the way things should work. That's not a
- 23:21Speaker 3: people get compensated for doing good jobs, and that's okay.
- 23:24Speaker 4: That is correct as a win win win. I was
- 23:26Speaker 4: looking at numbers or Ford trucks, Chevrolet trucks and Ram
- 23:31Speaker 4: trucks and GMC trucks, and I think maybe Tweotas was
- 23:35Speaker 4: in there. I was looking at what they sold a
- 23:37Speaker 4: year todate and I was taken back. How far forward
- 23:42Speaker 4: was ahead of Chevrolet if you just had to get
- 23:45Speaker 4: if they said Larry Gas, I thought they were closer.
- 23:49Speaker 4: But they're racing. They're racing for that number because who
- 23:52Speaker 4: wants to say they're number one? Somebody? Everybody wants to
- 23:55Speaker 4: be number one. If you go out and you and
- 23:58Speaker 4: I get into competitive games to win, you do, of course,
- 24:02Speaker 4: and who wants to beat you? I do. We're not mad,
- 24:06Speaker 4: you know, it's it's a it's the carrot. That's what
- 24:10Speaker 4: drives us, well, drives most people. Some people you can't travel,
- 24:14Speaker 4: but it's an incentive to continue what you're doing, to
- 24:18Speaker 4: do your job. And I'm sure I've never worked in
- 24:22Speaker 4: a plant, but I bet you there's safety items up
- 24:25Speaker 4: there that if you hit plateaus. As far as safeties,
- 24:28Speaker 4: it's probably especially in chemical plants, I bet you there's
- 24:31Speaker 4: some incentives there. I know in roads, Kim does bonds.
- 24:35Speaker 4: Kim's the bond. I mean, she probably does as many
- 24:37Speaker 4: bonds east of the Mississippi. She's the bond queen. Of
- 24:41Speaker 4: the United States and with USI, and they have when
- 24:45Speaker 4: they do bid bonds, then they have performance bonds, and
- 24:47Speaker 4: then they have incentives out there get this road built.
- 24:51Speaker 4: I don't know if that Nitro exit bridge and all
- 24:54Speaker 4: that's going on, if there's an incentive, but those people
- 24:58Speaker 4: are working. I bet you there is.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I bet you're probably right. That's Larry Dawson, and you
- 25:01Speaker 3: give it's call this morning if you have any questions
- 25:03Speaker 3: about the auto industry, you want to talk a little

- 26:24Speaker 7: Let's get started today.
- 26:36Speaker 3: You're listening to as the expert wchs the boy Charles
- 26:39Speaker 3: you Jail on the phone line This Morning with Larry Dawson.
- 26:41Speaker 3: It's a call. Threes are a fourth three four five
- 26:42Speaker 3: fifty eight threes are a four three four five fifteen fifteen.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Larry was some great advice in the last segment. We're
- 26:47Speaker 3: talking about different things. I thought it was interesting to
- 26:49Speaker 3: talking about there the Wranglers that were a little high
- 26:52Speaker 3: in inventory.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Right now, I've just noticed there's an uptick. You know
- 26:55Speaker 4: wranglers is you have the automobile world, and then you
- 26:58Speaker 4: always had that jeep Wrangler. If you walk out, well,
- 27:01Speaker 4: I saw you pull in what was I setting.
- 27:02Speaker 3: In a rightler? Yeah, that's right.
- 27:05Speaker 4: I bought well. When we went through the transition of
- 27:11Speaker 4: me retiring as Steven's taking over the store, I had
- 27:15Speaker 4: an inventory a fifteen model little Tudor Wrangler. I've just
- 27:19Speaker 4: never really fooled with one, and I kept it kind
- 27:23Speaker 4: of over on my side when I say my side
- 27:25Speaker 4: for me to drive. It's a fun, little sporty vehicle.
- 27:28Speaker 4: I can get in and out. It's not bad on gas.
- 27:31Speaker 4: It would be a daily driver if I was a
- 27:33Speaker 4: civilian out there. I don't think so. But it's kind
- 27:36Speaker 4: of a cool little unit to have tops come out.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I took the bike seat out, I can open the
- 27:40Speaker 4: rear of it. Will of the dog jumps up in
- 27:43Speaker 4: the bike has the whole bike end, and I have
- 27:46Speaker 4: found that it's more spacious than what I realized. And
- 27:49Speaker 4: I can see now the wrangler facade after that. Everybody
- 27:55Speaker 4: likes that, you know, and have you. I don't know
- 27:58Speaker 4: if you've noticed, but when you have Wranglers, if you
- 28:01Speaker 4: walk past one, there'll be ducks.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was gonna say, are you a
- 28:04Speaker 3: duck guy?
- 28:04Speaker 4: Now, well, let me tell you the Dutch story. Yes,
- 28:07Speaker 4: I have them, and they're in my console. But when
- 28:10Speaker 4: my granddaughters come over, they come out and I lay
- 28:13Speaker 4: them on the dash because the youngest one, when we
- 28:17Speaker 4: go down to dough Daddies, they have this little mechanical
- 28:19Speaker 4: machine where you drop a quarter or dollar in and
- 28:22Speaker 4: you can pick up a toy. She goes duck diving
- 28:25Speaker 4: and she brings me ducks. Well, I can't not put
- 28:28Speaker 4: them on the dashboard, but I don't drive around with them.
- 28:31Speaker 4: But if I know they're coming over, because I got
- 28:33Speaker 4: busted one day she pulled in. Well, Jenny, come over
- 28:37Speaker 4: and she said, where's the ducks? I said, well, they
- 28:41Speaker 4: were sliding around, so anyway, I've got a console full
- 28:45Speaker 4: of ducks, and you know, it's just one of those
- 28:49Speaker 4: little things. I did not know this. And if there's
- 28:51Speaker 4: a jeep enthusiast out there, text me, call me, tell
- 28:55Speaker 4: me where it's at. Supposedly, and I did google this
- 28:58Speaker 4: and I did read this. It's on there. There's a
- 29:02Speaker 4: stamp of a little animal or all jeeps, and it's
- 29:06Speaker 4: in different positions. I think they're like a little geico,
- 29:10Speaker 4: like a little lizard. Now when a fifteen Wrangler, I
- 29:14Speaker 4: was what I read, it's underneath the front cow where
- 29:19Speaker 4: the vents are by your windshield wipers. Well, I've had
- 29:24Speaker 4: three grandchildren all over that jeep looking every which way.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Somewhere there's a frame stamp, a body stamp, and I
- 29:32Speaker 4: think they're all a little bit different. I would love
- 29:35Speaker 4: to find that little animal in press in print on
- 29:38Speaker 4: a fifteen model Wrangler. I don't think they're all the
- 29:41Speaker 4: same by what I read, and I did not know this.
- 29:45Speaker 4: I received this information from the grandkids and they were
- 29:48Speaker 4: out there one day looking under and the rabbin what
- 29:50Speaker 4: are you doing And they said, well, we're looking for
- 29:53Speaker 4: the little animal, and I said, well what animal? So
- 29:56Speaker 4: after they left. Well, curiosity, I'll go in there and
- 29:59Speaker 4: hit Google was sure enough, Jeep's got that. And I
- 30:02Speaker 4: also found out a couple of little impressions or not
- 30:05Speaker 4: Jeep that I never paid the attention to, such as
- 30:07Speaker 4: the sandals and the sandals is I don't know the
- 30:11Speaker 4: gentleman's name, but a designer, a big designer in Wranglers.
- 30:15Speaker 4: He always wore sandals. So there's a couple of little
- 30:19Speaker 4: imprints of sandals. Oh so they have this Jeep Wranglers.
- 30:26Speaker 4: There's more to it than I realized, this as.
- 30:29Speaker 3: A culture behind it. What I wonder is in like
- 30:31Speaker 3: two thousand years when they're excavating, the archeologists are excavating
- 30:35Speaker 3: this society as before it fell, and they had come
- 30:39Speaker 3: across like some of these old cars are like, what
- 30:41Speaker 3: in the world was this animal imprint for?
- 30:44Speaker 4: Could you imagine? And I found this out by a
- 30:46Speaker 4: friend of mine that works for PoCA Valley Bank. Poka
- 30:50Speaker 4: Valley Bank bought the piece of land where Seers Automotive
- 30:53Speaker 4: was and if you remember there was a Seer's Automotive
- 30:57Speaker 4: where they repaired your car and sold you, well, you know,
- 31:00Speaker 4: they tore it down. It's fenced in right now. It's
- 31:02Speaker 4: just a vacant piece of property. So I asked Rocky
- 31:05Speaker 4: one day, I said, Rocky, what are they going to build?
- 31:08Speaker 4: He said, well, soon, he said, we got a little.
- 31:11Speaker 4: I think they did a Phase one and maybe a
- 31:13Speaker 4: Phase two. I'm not sure, which is an environmental And
- 31:17Speaker 4: they dug a car up ah what So evidently back
- 31:22Speaker 4: in the day, the young Charleston days, that was an
- 31:26Speaker 4: automobile something. Somehow an automobile got buried. A Sears automotive
- 31:33Speaker 4: got built on top of it. And now that the
- 31:36Speaker 4: Sears automotive is torn down. But you think about.
- 31:39Speaker 3: It, they're looking the truck for Jimmy Offfin.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Yeah, man, Jimmy, we solved it. But if you look around,
- 31:46Speaker 4: I mean, you start digging, you don't know what you're
- 31:49Speaker 4: going to undeath. But he said they unearthed. I'd love
- 31:52Speaker 4: to know what they on earth, you know, I mean,
- 31:54Speaker 4: I didn't go in. I don't even think he knew.
- 31:56Speaker 4: And I was just taken back by that. But I remember,
- 31:59Speaker 4: back in my very early days, my father once again
- 32:03Speaker 4: was a television repairman, and mother would it would bring
- 32:07Speaker 4: me to Charleston to pick up supplies for fathers and
- 32:10Speaker 4: in Hicks Radio was somewhere where around there. You'd have
- 32:13Speaker 4: to be older than us to remember Hicks Radio. They
- 32:16Speaker 4: were supply if you had tubes or things like that.
- 32:20Speaker 4: I don't think they had transistors. I think there were tubes,
- 32:22Speaker 4: but somewhere along that area there and that's where the
- 32:26Speaker 4: old Tag game stores was, and before that there was
- 32:30Speaker 4: dealerships in that area. And who knows, maybe as that
- 32:33Speaker 4: was one that they couldn't get a rebated or they
- 32:35Speaker 4: put so Newberry and I don't know.
- 32:39Speaker 3: That's a pretty good story though. You never know where
- 32:40Speaker 3: stuff like that from.
- 32:41Speaker 4: You had no idea. Could you imagine if you go
- 32:44Speaker 4: out and we call them barn fines and they're still
- 32:47Speaker 4: out there, what automobiles are in barns that could be found,
- 32:54Speaker 4: you know, for a period of time. And I've heard
- 32:57Speaker 4: this story many times that in the sixties, you know,
- 33:02Speaker 4: the draft was going and the Vietnam conflict was going on,
- 33:07Speaker 4: that the Sun had to go to war and the
- 33:11Speaker 4: car was parked in the barn and unfortunately the Sun
- 33:13Speaker 4: didn't come home. And they're in the seventies, eighties, and
- 33:18Speaker 4: probably still today. There's some of those automobiles out there.
- 33:21Speaker 4: Now there's less and less and less. You know, the
- 33:25Speaker 4: pickers has become on TV, so everybody wants to be
- 33:29Speaker 4: a picker, so they find. But there's still a lot
- 33:32Speaker 4: of items out there that's automobile related. The signage, you know,
- 33:38Speaker 4: could you imagine if you had an old Neon Rambler
- 33:42Speaker 4: sign what that would be worth today?
- 33:45Speaker 3: Oh yeah, right, yeah right.
- 33:46Speaker 4: I pulled in to Dollar General Saturday beside Steven's Auto
- 33:51Speaker 4: and Nitro to get some cleaning supplies. Now you may
- 33:55Speaker 4: not know what this car is there set of sixty
- 33:58Speaker 4: eight I think it was sixty eight AMX. That was
- 34:03Speaker 4: an American Motors hot rod car. It's called an AMX.
- 34:07Speaker 4: It was a Javelin looklike, but they called it AMX.
- 34:11Speaker 4: It had a three ninety, It did not have a
- 34:13Speaker 4: back seat, and it had the go package. The Go package.
- 34:18Speaker 4: It looked like it had exhaust going down by the rockers,
- 34:21Speaker 4: but it was fake exhaust, but it looked I mean,
- 34:23Speaker 4: it looked like it was real exhaust. That is a
- 34:26Speaker 4: rare car. That was a It was an AMX version
- 34:29Speaker 4: of the Javelin. American Motors made that vehicle not for
- 34:34Speaker 4: a long run and had a three ninety motor in it.
- 34:36Speaker 4: I believe a three ninety of the four barrel. I
- 34:38Speaker 4: maybe I need to be corrected or that, but you
- 34:41Speaker 4: do not see those cars very often. And it turned
- 34:44Speaker 4: my head and I wanted to walk over. I actually
- 34:46Speaker 4: I walked as close as I felt comfortable walking to it,
- 34:49Speaker 4: because you don't want to walk up in somebody's car,
- 34:52Speaker 4: you know, maybe at a car show, but not in
- 34:53Speaker 4: a parking lot. I called a friend of mine, Doug Craigo,
- 34:58Speaker 4: that knows a whole lot more about automobiles, and I do.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I said, Doug, you got to see what I told
- 35:04Speaker 4: him about it. He said, I'm gonna turn around and
- 35:06Speaker 4: go back and look. So I got to hold him. Later,
- 35:09Speaker 4: I said, was that a for real car or warmed
- 35:12Speaker 4: over car? That means was an original? Or did somebody?
- 35:15Speaker 4: He said, I think that was for real? Wow, And
- 35:17Speaker 4: that is a very rare car. Now American Motors they
- 35:21Speaker 4: had to run and business. The American Motors was later
- 35:24Speaker 4: bought by Chrysler. During the Lei Coca days, American Motors
- 35:28Speaker 4: had Jeep AMC Jeep and but there was a lot
- 35:32Speaker 4: of AMC dealers around here, which was Rambler Rambler AMC
- 35:35Speaker 4: American Motor Corporation, and they had the Javelin, they had
- 35:40Speaker 4: the Grimmlin, they had the Ambassador. You know, I think
- 35:44Speaker 4: they originated. Jerry probably could correct me. I think at
- 35:47Speaker 4: one time it was Rambler Nash then become Rambler, then
- 35:50Speaker 4: become American Motors. Chrysler brought him under their wing. But
- 35:54Speaker 4: you go back and then you know, we're just going
- 35:56Speaker 4: back a few decades. Those old hot rod cars. You know,
- 36:00Speaker 4: your Gto's, your Chevelle's, and we always think of Camaros
- 36:04Speaker 4: and Firebirds and their trans ams. But you get left
- 36:08Speaker 4: center just a little bit and you catch a car
- 36:10Speaker 4: like that. You don't see a lot of those cars,
- 36:13Speaker 4: and you don't you know. I was very active in
- 36:15Speaker 4: the car show here in Charleston for I think eight
- 36:17Speaker 4: or nine years. I gave a car away. So I
- 36:19Speaker 4: walked up Boulevard and before I did the presentation given
- 36:23Speaker 4: the car away. I don't recall, and maybe I'm wrong
- 36:28Speaker 4: seeing an AMX. I maybe I did it, but I
- 36:32Speaker 4: think I would remember because I always liked those cars.
- 36:35Speaker 3: That's u aways. I always enjoy finding these unique cars
- 36:39Speaker 3: that are out and about and things like the Blue Eyes.
- 36:41Speaker 3: And for somebody that has the knowledge that you do,
- 36:43Speaker 3: I'm sure finding a little jewel like that every once
- 36:44Speaker 3: in a while is pretty nice.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Dollar General and Nitra figure.
