Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, there's so much happening around the place this morning.
- 0:02Speaker 2: There always is, and there's always wonderful events happening around
- 0:05Speaker 2: the Northern Territory as well.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And when I.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Found out about this next event, I thought, what a wonderful,
- 0:12Speaker 2: wonderful thing to happen on the weekend. And so essentially,
- 0:16Speaker 2: Ride Against Cancer is what it's called, and it's they're
- 0:19Speaker 2: presenting a family friendly day on the race track and
- 0:23Speaker 2: you can come and join in the fun and experience
- 0:25Speaker 2: time on the track with all the proceeds going to
- 0:28Speaker 2: the Alan Walker Cancer Center. Now, I think there will
- 0:31Speaker 2: be a lot of people listening this morning who know
- 0:34Speaker 2: a lot about the Allen Walker Cancer Center. You'd be
- 0:36Speaker 2: hard pressed to find a Territory family who haven't actually
- 0:40Speaker 2: had a loved one that has needed the support of
- 0:42Speaker 2: the Allen Walker Cancer Center.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I know I can vouch for that, and I've had
- 0:47Speaker 1: a number.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Of well my dad, also the late Great Pete Davies
- 0:50Speaker 2: who used to do the show going through the Allen
- 0:52Speaker 2: Walker Cancer Center and other friends and they do an
- 0:55Speaker 2: absolutely phenomenal job, which is why I think this Ride
- 0:59Speaker 2: Again Cancer is going to be a great event. And
- 1:02Speaker 2: joining me in the studio to tell us more about it. Well,
- 1:07Speaker 2: Tony Savers, good morning to.
- 1:09Speaker 3: You, Good morning Katie, and good morning listener.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Wonderful to have you in the studio. Now we have
- 1:13Speaker 2: also gotten the studio with us as well, Amber, who
- 1:16Speaker 2: is a nurse from the Allen Walker Cancer Center.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Good morning Amber, Good morning Katie, good morning everyone.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Lovely to have you in the studio as well.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And then I'm pleased to say that joining me on
- 1:26Speaker 2: the line as well is Clive Baxter, who's actually a
- 1:29Speaker 2: Northern Territory wheelchair racer.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Get a Clive.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Yeah, hey, come on, Katy and he go listeners.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Good mate, So good to have you on the line
- 1:38Speaker 1: as well.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Now I've got all three of you because we want
- 1:40Speaker 2: to make sure that we cover everything off here. And
- 1:43Speaker 2: it sounds like it's going to be an incredible event. Tony,
- 1:47Speaker 2: tell us first, what can we expect.
- 1:50Speaker 6: Oh, Katie, We've got a lot of families coming down
- 1:53Speaker 6: on the day. It's this sad day coming and it
- 1:55Speaker 6: starts around eight am in the morning, so come down
- 1:58Speaker 6: you can. You can have a look on Facebook online
- 2:01Speaker 6: Humanitics tickets and get some tickets.
- 2:04Speaker 3: And it's not very dear.
- 2:06Speaker 6: The idea is to get families together and raise money
- 2:09Speaker 6: for a great cause, as you said, And we've all
- 2:11Speaker 6: known people who suffered from cancer, and we all know
- 2:15Speaker 6: what a great job Dell and Walker Cancer Cancer to do.
- 2:19Speaker 3: So come down. You can.
- 2:21Speaker 6: You can run around the track, you can walk around
- 2:24Speaker 6: the track, you can ride a pushbike around the track.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Your roller blades if you've got any, Katie, you've still
- 2:28Speaker 3: got rollerblades.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know if I can even stand up
- 2:31Speaker 2: in a pair of roller blades.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Around the track.
- 2:36Speaker 3: It's just a great, great event.
- 2:38Speaker 6: You know. It's come about through Clive Cloves work in
- 2:42Speaker 6: the background, approached Smoke Sports NT and you know, I
- 2:46Speaker 6: went to our board and the board said, what a.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Great idea, What a fantastic idea. And it's such a
- 2:51Speaker 3: great course.
- 2:51Speaker 6: And you know, we know the great work that you
- 2:54Speaker 6: do with Run with Dad, you know, and the people
- 2:57Speaker 6: you've mentioned over your radio show over the years and
- 3:00Speaker 6: all the great things.
- 3:01Speaker 3: So we're just happy to be part of it and
- 3:03Speaker 3: to give.
- 3:04Speaker 6: Something back to the al Walker Cancer Care Center that
- 3:07Speaker 6: do so much they do.
- 3:09Speaker 1: They do an incredible job for so many people.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Now, Clive, tell me, mate, what made you sort of
- 3:16Speaker 2: come up with this idea? Why did you think to yourself,
- 3:19Speaker 2: he this would be a fantastic thing for us to do.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Well, Look, Katie, what initiated it was? Unfortunately I lost
- 3:28Speaker 5: my wife to small cell lung cancer twenty months ago
- 3:32Speaker 5: and privy to that, she went through to nearly two
- 3:36Speaker 5: and a half years of a chemotherapy and radiation, all
- 3:40Speaker 5: supplied and supported by the Alam Walker Cancer Center. Now
- 3:46Speaker 5: we come to a stage for her cancer journey, if
- 3:51Speaker 5: you want to call it that, where chemo was well,
- 3:55Speaker 5: it wasn't that. It wasn't an option. There wasn't anything
- 3:58Speaker 5: left that was on the normal PB system. So there
- 4:01Speaker 5: was an offer made to Chantel to see if she
- 4:05Speaker 5: would like to take it on. And it was a
- 4:06Speaker 5: trial drug, and of course the trial drug is there
- 4:11Speaker 5: was that they had about one hundred and ten people
- 4:14Speaker 5: that had actually tried it, so they didn't really have
- 4:15Speaker 5: a lot of history or feedback on how good or
- 4:20Speaker 5: bad the drug worked. So and with all these trial things,
- 4:23Speaker 5: obviously there's a cost to it. So we were offered
- 4:27Speaker 5: that and it was three sessions at five thousand dollars
- 4:32Speaker 5: a session, so it's fifteen thousand dollars hit.
- 4:34Speaker 7: Now.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Of course, Chentel and myself just said, look, let's do it.
- 4:37Speaker 5: We've got to do We've got no choice. There was
- 4:40Speaker 5: there was no option, and Chantel was just an absolute fighter.
- 4:44Speaker 5: She just never gave up. Dying wasn't in her vocabulary
- 4:47Speaker 5: and so hence we took it on. And unbeknown to us,
- 4:54Speaker 5: a beautiful daughter, Valerie, who spent a lot of time
- 4:57Speaker 5: she trained, it's heard from her job in Brisbane to
- 5:02Speaker 5: be up here and help myself and help Chantell with
- 5:05Speaker 5: her care over that period of time, herself and a
- 5:09Speaker 5: great brunch my friends who are also my sport people
- 5:12Speaker 5: got together unbeknown to us and said that listen, we'd
- 5:17Speaker 5: like to give you guys some money towards this because
- 5:19Speaker 5: we feel it's worth it. And look, it was actually
- 5:23Speaker 5: a very emotional, emotional time and what they did was
- 5:27Speaker 5: just give Chantal that option to they'll pay for it
- 5:31Speaker 5: and she can concentrate on her well being rather than
- 5:34Speaker 5: having to worry about getting the money together to do
- 5:38Speaker 5: this trial drug. So I just said, look this, we
- 5:46Speaker 5: need to return this some way, We need to give back.
- 5:48Speaker 5: You know, it's only fair that what our friends that
- 5:51Speaker 5: done was absolutely beautiful, and I felt that it was
- 5:54Speaker 5: just important, so I spoke to Chantel about it. I said, listen,
- 5:57Speaker 5: I want to do something. I'm not sure what. I
- 6:00Speaker 5: had this crazy idea and maybe pushing my chair to
- 6:02Speaker 5: it to Catherine, and then I thought, no, that's stupid
- 6:05Speaker 5: because road trains and wheel chairs don't get on. So
- 6:11Speaker 5: it was a bit of a weird situation. I was
- 6:13Speaker 5: with my physia just doing a bit of physio one
- 6:15Speaker 5: day and I was telling him all about and he said,
- 6:16Speaker 5: why don't you look at doing something around the racetrack.
- 6:20Speaker 5: You're involved with no sports, and said, hey, that's not
- 6:23Speaker 5: silly idea. From there we just started discussing it, and
- 6:26Speaker 5: then Chantal was sixty six years of age when she
- 6:29Speaker 5: lost a lot, so we decided to start up sixty
- 6:33Speaker 5: six laps for Chantell and then hence here we are today.
- 6:38Speaker 5: It's like I said, it's twenty months in Chentil passed
- 6:40Speaker 5: and here we are on Saturday going to write against cancer.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Clive, what a beautiful thing to do.
- 6:49Speaker 2: What a beautiful tribute to Chantel, and what an incredible
- 6:53Speaker 2: thing for you to do. Are There's so many elements
- 6:55Speaker 2: of your story that make me feel quite emotional listening
- 6:58Speaker 2: to it and hearing what you are doing now. I
- 7:02Speaker 2: just think it's incredible. My hat goes off to you.
- 7:06Speaker 2: And the way that this could actually assist other people is,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you know, it's it's just such a great thing to do.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But you know, through your.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Work then at the Allen Walker Cancer Center, when when
- 7:20Speaker 2: you look at at you know, this fundraising, these fundraising efforts,
- 7:24Speaker 2: and how it could help the people that you see
- 7:27Speaker 2: each and every day, you must feel quite sort of
- 7:30Speaker 2: humbled hearing Clive as well and thinking what a lovely
- 7:33Speaker 2: what a lovely gesture.
- 7:35Speaker 7: Yeah, the first time, the first time I met Clive
- 7:38Speaker 7: was to say a big thank you, like we're so
- 7:40Speaker 7: grateful to be the recipient of such a beautiful charity
- 7:43Speaker 7: donation and to be involved continuously through client, through Clive's journey. Yeah,
- 7:49Speaker 7: so being involved in this it just promotes.
- 7:53Speaker 4: The work that we do. We have a very dedicated
- 7:55Speaker 4: team at Alan Walker and it means that we might
- 7:58Speaker 4: be able to buy a specialized equipment for the future
- 8:02Speaker 4: territorians coming through the center.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And you know, just to sort of, I guess make
- 8:07Speaker 2: those out there in the community who maybe haven't seen
- 8:10Speaker 2: the work that the Allen Walker Cancer Center do, so
- 8:12Speaker 2: that they've got a bit of a better understanding talk
- 8:15Speaker 2: us through you know, the types of people you see.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I would imagine that somebody gets a cancer diagnosis. It's
- 8:21Speaker 2: a massive shock for them, and in a lot of situations,
- 8:25Speaker 2: they don't really know what the next steps are. And
- 8:28Speaker 2: then I know, from the moment you walk into the
- 8:30Speaker 2: Allen Walker Cancer Center, well you're welcomed and everything sort
- 8:34Speaker 2: of becomes a little bit more clear in terms of
- 8:37Speaker 2: your treatment options and the road that you're going to
- 8:39Speaker 2: go down.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Yeah, we have a huge team of dedicated staff which
- 8:46Speaker 4: includes doctors, nurses, cancer care coordinators, radiation therapists, clinical trials coordinators,
- 8:52Speaker 4: our administration team, our aboriginal liaison officers, our allied health professionals,
- 8:58Speaker 4: to meet all as of all the Territorians.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Canton, Oh, good on you guys. I mean the work
- 9:06Speaker 1: that you do.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I think everybody out there listening, if they've had any
- 9:09Speaker 2: kind of contact with the Allen Walker Cancer Center, will
- 9:12Speaker 2: know how incredibly important that work is. And and you're
- 9:18Speaker 2: like a bunch of angels out there, really and how
- 9:21Speaker 2: beautifully you treat people and how you know, the support
- 9:24Speaker 2: that you provide to families at there really at their
- 9:28Speaker 2: lowest point is just incredible. And I think that the
- 9:31Speaker 2: you know, the fact that Clive wanted to do this
- 9:34Speaker 2: is real testament to that, isn't it.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Clive?
- 9:37Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, Catie. I mean, as you're aware, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 5: you go into the Alan Worker Center for the first
- 9:43Speaker 5: time and it's it's, you know, like it tears rolling
- 9:45Speaker 5: down my face and it was so daunting. And just
- 9:48Speaker 5: looked looking at my beautiful wife, Chantell and she was
- 9:51Speaker 5: just sort of in it. She's obviously that will be
- 9:53Speaker 5: started or on her initial drugs, so she was a
- 9:57Speaker 5: little bit sort of hazed and just just looking and
- 10:01Speaker 5: we were just sort of, yeah, it's undescribable. But you
- 10:05Speaker 5: know what that that that particular journey that I mean,
- 10:10Speaker 5: we've spent close to two and a half years there
- 10:13Speaker 5: and probably there every three weeks just about. Sometimes it
- 10:17Speaker 5: was a quicker in session chemo runs and then you
- 10:21Speaker 5: might have a break for six weeks just to let
- 10:23Speaker 5: the body recop and what have you. But there was
- 10:26Speaker 5: never a time you go there that you're not welcome.
- 10:29Speaker 5: There's never a time you go there and you don't
- 10:31Speaker 5: feel out of place, you know. And and the other
- 10:35Speaker 5: thing that really brings to mind to me is cancer
- 10:38Speaker 5: doesn't discriminate. You know, I've seen young people in there,
- 10:43Speaker 5: two old people in there, and you know, it just
- 10:46Speaker 5: really brings it home. How how how nasty is that
- 10:52Speaker 5: if we want to call it a disease, I'm not
- 10:54Speaker 5: sure the right words for it, but how nasty it is,
- 10:57Speaker 5: and it doesn't discriminate, you know, And it's just so sad.
- 11:00Speaker 5: Had to see young and old in there and what
- 11:02Speaker 5: they're going through and being with you know, on that
- 11:05Speaker 5: journey with Centhil, she was tough and she never asked
- 11:09Speaker 5: for anything, and she always praised the nurses. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 5: like sometimes I couldn't get a needle in the arm,
- 11:14Speaker 5: you know, you try ten times, and she'd say it's okay,
- 11:16Speaker 5: it's okay, and I'd get frustrated, but she just she
- 11:20Speaker 5: too took it on and always gave them praise. And yeah,
- 11:24Speaker 5: then guys in there, they're just so wonderful. They make
- 11:26Speaker 5: you feel part of that family and you do become
- 11:31Speaker 5: part of it. And yeah, it's so important. You know,
- 11:35Speaker 5: we need to dig deep and really put in and
- 11:38Speaker 5: get as much support for the Allen Walker Cancer Care
- 11:42Speaker 5: Center as we can.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Lady mate, I'm getting messages from people saying they're balling
- 11:46Speaker 2: their eyes out listening to your story. I'm struggling a
- 11:51Speaker 2: bit through but the fact that I've got Tony and
- 11:53Speaker 2: danbur In here is making me keep my eyes dry.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I'm doing my best to not have a cry made.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I'm so grateful to you for sharing your story because
- 12:04Speaker 2: I know that it's not an easy process. I know
- 12:05Speaker 2: it's not an easy thing to do to really put
- 12:08Speaker 2: your heart out there. So I'm really grateful that you've
- 12:11Speaker 2: done that this morning. Now let's lighten things up a little, Tony.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I got told by Saint John's yesterday that they're going
- 12:21Speaker 2: to be pushing around some stretchers.
- 12:23Speaker 1: They're going to be having a bit of a race
- 12:25Speaker 1: out there on the week.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yes, certainly, Okatie.
- 12:27Speaker 6: So John's been great, and you know they came on
- 12:30Speaker 6: board straight away, Craig Garaway and the team, and they're
- 12:34Speaker 6: putting together a team you can enter in a team.
- 12:36Speaker 6: So we want the fieries to come down, we want
- 12:38Speaker 6: the police to come down, you know, correctional services, all
- 12:41Speaker 6: the teams to come down that support such a great cause.
- 12:44Speaker 6: And yeah, yeah, it'll be a fun thing to see
- 12:46Speaker 6: and we'll be taking plenty of photos of course, and
- 12:49Speaker 6: put them up on the Facebook and you know, it's
- 12:52Speaker 6: a great event and it's a great opportunity for Territorians
- 12:55Speaker 6: to two things. One to to come down support a
- 12:59Speaker 6: fantastic the cause we've heard from Member and Clive today,
- 13:03Speaker 6: and also get around the racetrack, the supercar track. You
- 13:06Speaker 6: can actually be on it before the supercars come in
- 13:09Speaker 6: four weeks time, so you can say when you're sitting
- 13:12Speaker 6: there watching the supercars, I was on that corner, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 6: and I did it for a great cause, you know,
- 13:17Speaker 6: not only a great cause, but a right cause. So yeah, yeah, Katie,
- 13:21Speaker 6: it's going to be a great weekend. It starts at eight,
- 13:24Speaker 6: finishes at twelve. We'll have We've got the Lions Club
- 13:27Speaker 6: coming down doing sausages and drinks and so forth, and
- 13:30Speaker 6: you know, NTA Government have been fantastic. Shannon's of course,
- 13:34Speaker 6: Total Tools have donated raffles, Bunnings have given us raffle tickets,
- 13:38Speaker 6: so there's plenty of raffles going on and fun things
- 13:41Speaker 6: for people to do as well.
- 13:43Speaker 2: So where can people get a bit more involved. They're
- 13:45Speaker 2: listening this morning and they're thinking that sounds like something
- 13:47Speaker 2: I want to be involved in.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Where should they go?
- 13:50Speaker 6: Well, look at our Facebook site Right Against Cancer NT
- 13:54Speaker 6: or look up humanitex tickets Right Against Cancer INT and
- 13:58Speaker 6: you can. There's a QR code. Just scan that on
- 14:01Speaker 6: your phone and off you go. It'll take you straight
- 14:04Speaker 6: to the tickets boy. As many tickets you want. You
- 14:06Speaker 6: can make a donation. Some people have made some great
- 14:09Speaker 6: donations already, and all the proceeds, all the proceeds are
- 14:13Speaker 6: going to the Allen Walker Cancer Care Center.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Wonderful, wonderful stuff.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Well Tony Amber Clive, thank you all so much for
- 14:22Speaker 2: your time this morning. I'm very grateful and I would
- 14:26Speaker 2: encourage everybody to get behind this wonderful event. Thank you
- 14:29Speaker 2: so much for coming in and having a chat today,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and to you Clive for having a yarn to us
- 14:33Speaker 2: on the phone.
- 14:34Speaker 5: Yeah, thank you very much, Katie, and thank you very
- 14:36Speaker 5: much listeners.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Thank you, Thanks Katie, Thanks thanks, thank you. No worries
- 14:41Speaker 1: at all,
