- 1:04Speaker 2: this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or computer
- 1:07Speaker 2: by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the greatest
- 1:11Speaker 2: thing since an attempted on side punt. If you watched
- 1:16Speaker 2: last week's game against Detroit, something very confusing happened with
- 1:20Speaker 2: less than two minutes to go. After Jake Browning was
- 1:23Speaker 2: tackled in the end zone for a safety, the Bengals
- 1:26Speaker 2: were required to do a free kick from their own twenty.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Punter Ryan Rico handled it, and here's what you heard
- 1:32Speaker 2: on TV.
- 1:33Speaker 3: A sack safety for the Lions.
- 1:36Speaker 4: They have pushed their lead to thirteen.
- 1:38Speaker 5: And now the high pooch free kick and the fair
- 1:42Speaker 5: catch call.
- 1:42Speaker 6: For and made by Amaran Saint.
- 1:44Speaker 5: Brown at the forty six yard Libel.
- 1:47Speaker 2: So the ball was at the forty six but there
- 1:49Speaker 2: was a penalty on the play that advanced it thirty
- 1:52Speaker 2: six yards.
- 1:54Speaker 6: It'll be the receiving team's ball half the distance from
- 1:56Speaker 6: the spot of the kick at the ten yard line.
- 1:59Speaker 3: First down, and there is an unsportsmanlike conduct on the
- 2:03Speaker 3: free kick, and the Lions are going to have it
- 2:07Speaker 3: well into the red zone.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So what the heck happened? Well, believe it or not,
- 2:12Speaker 2: the Bengals tried an onside punt. We think of onside
- 2:17Speaker 2: kicks as bouncing balls kicked off a tee where you're
- 2:20Speaker 2: hoping for a high hop or a muff by the
- 2:23Speaker 2: other team, but it is legal after a safety to
- 2:27Speaker 2: onside punt. In fact, when Don Shula was the coach
- 2:30Speaker 2: of the Dolphins, Miami pulled one off against the Bengals
- 2:34Speaker 2: in nineteen eighty one. Website ranks it as the thirty
- 2:38Speaker 2: sixth the greatest play in Dolphins history. The rules have
- 2:42Speaker 2: changed since then, after the league adopted the dynamic kickoff
- 2:46Speaker 2: rule last year. Teams now have to alert opponents when
- 2:50Speaker 2: they are attempting an on side kick, and that still
- 2:53Speaker 2: applies after a safety, so that element of surprise was gone,
- 2:58Speaker 2: but you can still try to the opponent with how
- 3:01Speaker 2: you do it. What the Bengals were trying to do
- 3:03Speaker 2: last week is have punter Ryan Rico kick the ball
- 3:07Speaker 2: straight up in the air and hope that somebody who
- 3:10Speaker 2: isn't used to fielding it failed to make the catch,
- 3:13Speaker 2: but Rico punted the ball a bit too far. Under
- 3:17Speaker 2: the current rules, an on side kick has to land
- 3:20Speaker 2: in the fifteen yard setup zone. In this case, that
- 3:24Speaker 2: was between the thirty and forty five yard lines. Rico's
- 3:28Speaker 2: kick went to the forty six, one yard too far.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The penalty for an on sidekick that goes untouched beyond
- 3:38Speaker 2: the setup zone is a loss of fifteen yards and
- 3:42Speaker 2: the receiving team gets the ball. Since a free kick
- 3:45Speaker 2: after a safety takes place at the twenty, it became
- 3:48Speaker 2: a half the distance penalty and the Lions got the
- 3:51Speaker 2: ball at the ten. It's probably the most confusing thing
- 3:55Speaker 2: I've seen in fifteen years as the Bengals announcer, and
- 3:59Speaker 2: had the angles pulled off an on side punt, it
- 4:02Speaker 2: would have been one of the coolest things. Now, let's
- 4:06Speaker 2: get to this week's big news. In the fourth quarter
- 4:10Speaker 2: of last week's game, Jake Browning threw three touchdown passes,
- 4:14Speaker 2: but it was clear in his postgame news conference that
- 4:17Speaker 2: Jake's confidence had not been restored.
- 4:20Speaker 7: I need to play better and there's literally no hiding
- 4:23Speaker 7: from that. And I don't care if every person on
- 4:27Speaker 7: the team says they need to play better. It starts
- 4:29Speaker 7: with me playing better at the quarterback position and not
- 4:32Speaker 7: putting our team in difficult situations. And there's no hiding
- 4:35Speaker 7: from that. So on me, I needed to stop throwing interceptions.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Jake proved two years ago that he can play in
- 4:41Speaker 2: the NFL, but for whatever reason, he wasn't playing well
- 4:45Speaker 2: this year and it was getting hard to stick with
- 4:48Speaker 2: him in hopes of that changing soon, so the Bengals
- 4:52Speaker 2: made an aggressive move by trading for eighteen year veteran
- 4:56Speaker 2: Joe Flacco, who started against the Bengals in Week one.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Here's what Joe Burrow said about him before that game.
- 5:03Speaker 8: I think he throws it better than number one a
- 5:06Speaker 8: lot of people give him credit for, and I think
- 5:07Speaker 8: he's one of the more natural throws of the football
- 5:09Speaker 8: that I've ever seen. You know, he can spin it
- 5:11Speaker 8: with the best of them. He's got one of the
- 5:13Speaker 8: stronger signs of all time. So he's going to be
- 5:15Speaker 8: able to put the ball when and where he wants
- 5:17Speaker 8: to put it.
- 5:18Speaker 2: The Bengals saw that an opening day, as Flacco threw
- 5:21Speaker 2: for two hundred and ninety yards, and while he threw
- 5:23Speaker 2: a pair of interceptions, they were both off the hands
- 5:27Speaker 2: of his receivers. In fact, Cleveland had four drops in all.
- 5:31Speaker 5: On first and goal from the five, Flacco, looking to pass,
- 5:34Speaker 5: his throw caught in the middle of the end zone
- 5:38Speaker 5: by Cedric Tilman for at cleveland go ahead touchdown.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Joe Flacco gives the old fish pump have to throwing
- 5:46Speaker 6: that pass in the middle of the field, realizing that
- 5:49Speaker 6: his receiver caught it for the touchdown. Good route run
- 5:53Speaker 6: by Cedric Tilman. Flacco pat his eyes on him the
- 5:56Speaker 6: whole way, a delibered a strike.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Flacco started four games for the Brown this year, and
- 6:00Speaker 2: three weeks ago he beat the team he'll face this Sunday,
- 6:04Speaker 2: the Green Bay Packers. Here's Zach Taylor on adding the
- 6:08Speaker 2: former Super Bowl MVP.
- 6:10Speaker 9: Played him a lot, watched him a lot, brings great
- 6:13Speaker 9: great experience, great leadership. His style fits our style of
- 6:17Speaker 9: play too, so excited to get him out there. We'll
- 6:19Speaker 9: start him this week. So he's gonna take all the reps,
- 6:21Speaker 9: get ready to go. Already spent a lot of time
- 6:23Speaker 9: meeting with us, getting at the speed, So feel really
- 6:25Speaker 9: good about where he's at. I mean, it's different than
- 6:28Speaker 9: a young quarterback coming in trying to learn a system
- 6:31Speaker 9: and understand what a defense is trying to do to
- 6:33Speaker 9: challenge you. No that, but he's played Green Bay this year,
- 6:36Speaker 9: so he's already gone through a week of prep. So
- 6:39Speaker 9: that's the nice part. Is now the communication and the
- 6:43Speaker 9: weekly rhythm is maybe different, unique, but he's already prepared
- 6:48Speaker 9: for this opponent, so he gets a chance to refresh
- 6:50Speaker 9: himself on that well at the same time, just learning
- 6:53Speaker 9: our system and our terminology and our verbiage and how
- 6:55Speaker 9: we operate b also knowing that he's playing now. He
- 6:58Speaker 9: hasn't played there this year, and so the crowd, noise
- 6:59Speaker 9: and all that stuff's different, but at least he's got
- 7:02Speaker 9: some experience pointing at them.
- 7:03Speaker 10: He's a great.
- 7:04Speaker 9: Passer, and again, we've got to expand all areas of
- 7:07Speaker 9: our offense to be better, to be able to efficient
- 7:09Speaker 9: run the football, protect all that.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Kind of stuff.
- 7:12Speaker 9: But the number one trait you're looking for is a
- 7:14Speaker 9: guy that can operate your system into the football and
- 7:18Speaker 9: Joe has always been a tremendous passer in this league
- 7:20Speaker 9: and have seen it, and so now we got treminous
- 7:23Speaker 9: weapons that he can play around, and so I'm excited
- 7:26Speaker 9: to Watchington.
- 7:27Speaker 2: The Browns have turned a rookie quarterback, Dylan Gabriel, so
- 7:29Speaker 2: they were willing to trade Flacco in order to move
- 7:32Speaker 2: up in next year's draft. The Bengals gave up a
- 7:34Speaker 2: fifth round pick and got Flacco plus a sixth round
- 7:38Speaker 2: pick in return. But why do the Bengals make this
- 7:41Speaker 2: move now? Well, just look at the AFC North. The
- 7:45Speaker 2: Steelers are three and one, but the jury is still
- 7:47Speaker 2: out on just how good Pittsburgh really is. The Ravens
- 7:51Speaker 2: are one in four with devastating injuries, and the Browns
- 7:54Speaker 2: are also one in four in rebuilding mode. It might
- 7:58Speaker 2: not take ten wins to capture the division this year.
- 8:02Speaker 2: The Bengals are two and three and after playing at
- 8:05Speaker 2: Green Bay this week, have three straight home games against
- 8:07Speaker 2: the Steelers, Jets, and Bears. They are still very much
- 8:11Speaker 2: alive with the hope of getting Joe Burrow back in December.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Here are Orlando Brown and Chase Brown on the front
- 8:20Speaker 2: office taking action.
- 8:22Speaker 11: I think it's, you know, more so a message too
- 8:24Speaker 11: from the front office and ownership, you know, letting the
- 8:27Speaker 11: world know that you know that this is important to us,
- 8:29Speaker 11: and we do see that, we know that, and I
- 8:31Speaker 11: imagine Joe Burrow will be back to at some point.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 12: I think it shows that they want to win and
- 8:37Speaker 12: winning as a priority, and yeah, I think so. I
- 8:42Speaker 12: think it shows their commitment to this locker room, the
- 8:46Speaker 12: coaching staff, and how much they believe in this team.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Flacco has two former teammates on the Bengals roster, dating
- 8:52Speaker 2: back to the twenty nineteen Denver Broncos, tight end Noah
- 8:56Speaker 2: Fant and offensive lineman Dalton Reisner. Asked Reisner if Flacco
- 9:01Speaker 2: can get up to speed in four days of practice
- 9:04Speaker 2: with the Bengals.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I do believe that he can do that.
- 9:07Speaker 4: He is a sixteen year I don't want to out
- 9:10Speaker 4: speak sixteen or seventeen year vet in this league. I
- 9:12Speaker 4: think he's fifty nine years old, right, something like that,
- 9:14Speaker 4: And I'm just kidding, he's like forty regardless. He's a
- 9:18Speaker 4: guy that's gonna come in here and be a VET
- 9:20Speaker 4: and know how to do that, and he's going to
- 9:21Speaker 4: be on top of his p's and q's.
- 9:23Speaker 1: He's gonna learn the offense.
- 9:24Speaker 4: He's about to go out there and command it and
- 9:27Speaker 4: put his best foot forward to help us win.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I can't imagine there has ever been a quarterback to
- 9:31Speaker 2: beat the same opponent twice in three weeks while playing
- 9:35Speaker 2: for two different teams. But that's what Flacco will try
- 9:38Speaker 2: to do on Sunday. I talked about that and much
- 9:42Speaker 2: more with one of the guys who will call the
- 9:45Speaker 2: game on CBS my son Sam has excellent taste in broadcasters,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and his favorite is not his dad. It's our guest
- 9:56Speaker 2: Kevin Harlan, who will be on the mic for CBS
- 9:58Speaker 2: this week. Kevin, we got quite the plot twist this
- 10:01Speaker 2: week with the Bengals acquisition of Joe Flacco having a
- 10:05Speaker 2: Cincinnati assignment this week. What was your reaction?
- 10:09Speaker 10: Stunned? But it makes sense. He knows the division. He
- 10:14Speaker 10: is a quarterback who has seen everything. He's reached the
- 10:19Speaker 10: highest of highs. He's had some difficult moments, but he
- 10:24Speaker 10: continues to go on. You know, Dan, I thought at
- 10:26Speaker 10: one time that after he had signed the big contract
- 10:30Speaker 10: with Baltimore and had won the Super Bowl, and I
- 10:33Speaker 10: know he's a family man and all that, and I thought,
- 10:36Speaker 10: you know, I could see him finding other priorities in life.
- 10:43Speaker 10: I may be wrong in this assumption. And while we've
- 10:45Speaker 10: interviewed him over the years, I haven't seen him much recently.
- 10:49Speaker 10: I think his love for the game, which has always
- 10:51Speaker 10: been there, it kind of feels like it's grown the
- 10:55Speaker 10: older he's gotten and the more years he's piled up
- 10:59Speaker 10: on his resume. Is being an NFL quarterback, He's good
- 11:01Speaker 10: at it. He's a great locker room influence, and if
- 11:06Speaker 10: any team was ready to make a move, it was
- 11:09Speaker 10: probably yours. Poor Jake was was clearly was struggling, and
- 11:15Speaker 10: this is maybe shot in the arm Joe gets back
- 11:19Speaker 10: in December that this team needs. I mean, they've got
- 11:21Speaker 10: the parts. We all know that. See Lucas Patrick is
- 11:25Speaker 10: now in that window where he can begin to practice
- 11:27Speaker 10: and be good to get him back down the road,
- 11:29Speaker 10: if not this weekend. But I guess my point is
- 11:32Speaker 10: is I was thrilled they made him move. They're not
- 11:35Speaker 10: waving the white flag on the season, not that they
- 11:37Speaker 10: were thinking of it anyway, but this clearly shows, hey,
- 11:41Speaker 10: we're in it, We've got the parts. Let's let's let's
- 11:44Speaker 10: keep let's keep going. We're only two and three. It's
- 11:46Speaker 10: not like we're zero in five, right, I mean they're
- 11:49Speaker 10: two and three. They're very in a division which has
- 11:52Speaker 10: no Lamar for a while. We don't know how long
- 11:54Speaker 10: that will be. You never know Pittsburgh's going to give you,
- 11:56Speaker 10: and Cleveland continues to find their way. Why not. I'm
- 12:00Speaker 10: it shows aggression and I think every fan would appreciate that.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Let me take it a step further. Kansas City is
- 12:07Speaker 2: two and three and playing the Lions this week. The Texans,
- 12:10Speaker 2: with their division titles the last couple of years or
- 12:12Speaker 2: two and three, they go to Seattle this week. The
- 12:15Speaker 2: AFC in general appears to be wide open, doesn't it.
- 12:19Speaker 10: I agree, Dan, you're on it, and I I would
- 12:23Speaker 10: say that that these are, but that's it's a week
- 12:27Speaker 10: to week league, and it's clearly a year to year league,
- 12:30Speaker 10: and teams you think have got every answer at every
- 12:32Speaker 10: position in every way are stumbling a bit. And now
- 12:37Speaker 10: we see that how strong front offices and personnel departments
- 12:41Speaker 10: can be in trying to, you know, grab a stronger
- 12:45Speaker 10: hold of the rudder. And clearly the Bengals are doing that.
- 12:49Speaker 10: Other teams are trying to find their way. But it's
- 12:52Speaker 10: not what we thought, right. We didn't figure two and
- 12:54Speaker 10: three Kansas City. We didn't figure a losing record with Baltimore,
- 12:58Speaker 10: you know, five weeks in. But we're seeing it, and
- 13:01Speaker 10: I think that it just shows you that in this
- 13:04Speaker 10: league you need you need ingenuity, clearly, because you've got
- 13:08Speaker 10: to handle problems every single day of practice and every week.
- 13:11Speaker 10: In this league, you've got to look ahead and you've
- 13:14Speaker 10: got to make sure that you're making the right moves
- 13:16Speaker 10: not for just now, but also you know, three weeks
- 13:19Speaker 10: from now, but know that that you can never give up.
- 13:23Speaker 10: And how many times, and you've called the league for decades,
- 13:25Speaker 10: how many times have we gotten into the week fifteen, sixteen, seventeen,
- 13:29Speaker 10: eighteen world And teams that were maybe at the beginning
- 13:32Speaker 10: of the year four and eight or three and five
- 13:34Speaker 10: or whatever are now like right there with the win,
- 13:37Speaker 10: can get in the playoffs and make a noise that
- 13:40Speaker 10: can be resounding. So I feel like no team is out,
- 13:45Speaker 10: But I would backpedal here a bit and say I
- 13:49Speaker 10: appreciate what a team like the Bengals have done. Now, listen,
- 13:52Speaker 10: there are a lot of guys out there, probably with
- 13:54Speaker 10: different kind of price points on getting adult in or
- 13:58Speaker 10: getting you know, a backup this team or that team,
- 14:01Speaker 10: And we all heard the names over the last couple
- 14:03Speaker 10: of days. If they were so inclined to look for
- 14:06Speaker 10: a punch, a burst, a spark on offense, Green Bay
- 14:10Speaker 10: did it with Michael Parsons. I'm not saying that Flacco's
- 14:13Speaker 10: going to have that same kind of kind of movement,
- 14:16Speaker 10: but listen, he clearly brings a different dimension to that
- 14:21Speaker 10: position with the guy that clearly still wants to play.
- 14:24Speaker 10: So I applaud with the Bengals have done. And I
- 14:29Speaker 10: love that in the middle of a season, when you
- 14:31Speaker 10: think you've got everything just kind of proportioned the right way,
- 14:34Speaker 10: this happens, or Parsons is traded. And here we have
- 14:37Speaker 10: those kind of teams, Green Bay and Cincinnati meeting this
- 14:40Speaker 10: week and after making big early season moves to their roster.
- 14:45Speaker 10: It's so intriguing to me in so many ways.
- 14:48Speaker 2: We're visiting with Kevin Harlan Choe Flacco's NFL debut is
- 14:52Speaker 2: on opening Day two thousand and eight against the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Do you remember seeing look at the big man Ron.
- 15:02Speaker 10: Well, now that you've said yes, I do, I do
- 15:04Speaker 10: remember that. And you know he is His career speaks
- 15:09Speaker 10: for itself, not in terms of legendary Hall of Fame status,
- 15:14Speaker 10: but he's won a Super Bowl, He's led winning teams,
- 15:18Speaker 10: he's proven he can play in this league. He surprised
- 15:20Speaker 10: people this stage of his career what he can still do.
- 15:23Speaker 10: He's incredibly engaged and and and I think in that
- 15:27Speaker 10: locker room, and this is again nothing against who has
- 15:30Speaker 10: been starting for Joe, but you're always you know, it's
- 15:35Speaker 10: never time to bail. It's never time to you know,
- 15:38Speaker 10: every man for himself, right, it's they are right in
- 15:42Speaker 10: it in a division that is clearly within reach. And this,
- 15:45Speaker 10: this is the kind of move that I applaud and love.
- 15:50Speaker 10: But going back to the un Flacco I worked with,
- 15:52Speaker 10: I worked at the time, not with Solomon Wilcotts you
- 15:55Speaker 10: know who you guys know well there, but also with
- 15:58Speaker 10: with Rich and he went to Delaware. So I remember
- 16:03Speaker 10: those meetings, specifically with a young Joe Flacco Dan in
- 16:08Speaker 10: those production meetings with the Ravens, and and how he
- 16:12Speaker 10: looked at Rich thinking, man, if I could only, if
- 16:15Speaker 10: I could only have a career like rich gannon super
- 16:17Speaker 10: Bowl player, MVP in the league, played deep into his thirties,
- 16:23Speaker 10: had some great runs and and and not that he
- 16:26Speaker 10: didn't think he could do it, but he was a
- 16:27Speaker 10: young player at the time. And here we have him
- 16:29Speaker 10: and and he plays then and here all these years later,
- 16:34Speaker 10: here he is like he's been given the keys here
- 16:37Speaker 10: to the Ferrari. Right, I'm gonna put the key in
- 16:40Speaker 10: and I'm gonna I'm gonna feel that engine roar. He's
- 16:44Speaker 10: got one side, Jase, He's got Higgins on the other
- 16:47Speaker 10: he's got. He's got some real playmakers on that team.
- 16:49Speaker 10: It's gonna be fun, very fun.
- 16:52Speaker 2: There might be a Ferrari commercial in your future based
- 16:55Speaker 2: on that engine.
- 16:57Speaker 10: Wrapping up, let's think of any other I should My
- 17:00Speaker 10: son in law was a Ford dealer. I probably should
- 17:02Speaker 10: have s at Ford. Anyway. The point is is that
- 17:05Speaker 10: there's a new guy with the hands on the wheel,
- 17:07Speaker 10: and that's that's pretty exciting. I think at this stage
- 17:09Speaker 10: of the year.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Let's discuss the Packers. They opened the season with dominant
- 17:14Speaker 2: wins over Detroit and Washington. One of their offensive lineman said,
- 17:17Speaker 2: we might go undefeated this year, and then they lost
- 17:19Speaker 2: to Cleveland in Week three. What is your view of
- 17:22Speaker 2: the Packers and the problems they present for Cincinnati this week?
- 17:27Speaker 10: So I do their preseason game, so I've seen him
- 17:29Speaker 10: throughout the summer, and this is Free Parsons Arrival, and
- 17:36Speaker 10: I thought there were a strong team then and the
- 17:38Speaker 10: general manager came out Dan and he said of the Packers,
- 17:41Speaker 10: and he said, he said, we've got to start thinking
- 17:43Speaker 10: in terms of championships and not just winning records and
- 17:47Speaker 10: getting into the playoff. We need to think now in
- 17:50Speaker 10: terms of championships. And here is an organization that has
- 17:53Speaker 10: been graced with two straight Hall of Fame quarterbacks and
- 17:56Speaker 10: Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, and they really are high
- 17:59Speaker 10: on on Jordan Love, their quarterback now, who is playing well.
- 18:04Speaker 10: But for whatever reason, they took on a red hot
- 18:08Speaker 10: Dallas team and they faced one of the great defenses
- 18:11Speaker 10: in the league of Cleveland. We know Cleveland's got the defense,
- 18:14Speaker 10: and they had the Packers number, and probably a loss
- 18:17Speaker 10: like that early in the season was good for them
- 18:20Speaker 10: to not think, you know, hey, I read what the
- 18:22Speaker 10: lineman said, and he was and I'm sure they're going,
- 18:24Speaker 10: oh my god, don't talk again. Please, don't open your mouth.
- 18:28Speaker 10: You cannot in this league. It is such an unforgiving league.
- 18:33Speaker 10: And these are pros on the other end, regardless of
- 18:35Speaker 10: what record or history says. These are prideful men, and
- 18:39Speaker 10: they come out every day feeling like I'm going to
- 18:42Speaker 10: be better today than I was yesterday and better tomorrow
- 18:45Speaker 10: than I was today. And they're always looking to improve.
- 18:48Speaker 10: And the sky in the eye never lies. The game
- 18:50Speaker 10: is on tape, their performance is there. There is no
- 18:54Speaker 10: you know, like exhaling in this league, not until the
- 18:56Speaker 10: season has come to a close So I knew that
- 18:59Speaker 10: when he said that, uh oh and again and Miles
- 19:02Speaker 10: Gareth that defense those players, and it was it was troublesome,
- 19:06Speaker 10: and they lost a double digit lead and they lost
- 19:08Speaker 10: the game. So the Packers come into this game off
- 19:11Speaker 10: of by you know, and you can do the analytics
- 19:14Speaker 10: and what teams have done, you know, pre by post,
- 19:16Speaker 10: by whatever. I think it's it'll be a lot for
- 19:22Speaker 10: any team to handle it alone the Bengals. But now
- 19:24Speaker 10: the Bengals have got their own juice, they got their
- 19:26Speaker 10: own spark, and I think they're gonna feel really good
- 19:28Speaker 10: about what they bring in. And they're two and three,
- 19:31Speaker 10: and I think that that will carry a lot of weight.
- 19:34Speaker 10: So in this league, trying to guess, I don't know
- 19:36Speaker 10: how these guys and all we do is see betting this,
- 19:38Speaker 10: betting that red level. I don't know how we know
- 19:41Speaker 10: everything we can, like you know everything about this game.
- 19:45Speaker 10: I know, I look at all the numbers. I don't
- 19:47Speaker 10: know how people can sit there and maybe look at
- 19:49Speaker 10: a casualt even if they feel they know, can figure
- 19:52Speaker 10: out what's gonna happen instead of line in these games,
- 19:54Speaker 10: it's impossible. You never know, You never know in this league,
- 19:59Speaker 10: and that's it's the beauty of the league. And I truly,
- 20:02Speaker 10: even as much as you might think the Packers have
- 20:04Speaker 10: got the answer, you never know. And that's that's the
- 20:08Speaker 10: beauty of the game. Coming up Sunday at lambeau Field.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Did the Micah Parsons trade change your view of the Packers'
- 20:14Speaker 2: ability to win a Super Bowl title?
- 20:16Speaker 10: Well, I think it's stunned the league because he's a
- 20:19Speaker 10: fifth year player at the very height of his powers
- 20:22Speaker 10: and is dominant and is forceful. A one man guy
- 20:26Speaker 10: is you're going to find on any defensive unit in
- 20:28Speaker 10: the league. Like he changes a game. Offenses now tilt
- 20:32Speaker 10: toward ever you know, wherever he's going to be with
- 20:34Speaker 10: extra blockers, going away with the play call and checking
- 20:37Speaker 10: it off at the line. I think he changes how
- 20:41Speaker 10: play to play, not just series the series or game
- 20:44Speaker 10: to game, Like wherever he lines up, now that that's
- 20:47Speaker 10: a red flag. And you've got a great guy that
- 20:48Speaker 10: can decipher that stuff in Flaccu, who just played the
- 20:52Speaker 10: Packers and won a couple of weeks ago for Cleveland.
- 20:55Speaker 10: Like so like he knows the recipe right, and so
- 20:59Speaker 10: he knows this this defense. But I did think that
- 21:02Speaker 10: Parsons could be like the missing ingredient. They came in
- 21:06Speaker 10: Dan to the preseason wanting to strengthen their pass rush,
- 21:11Speaker 10: weren't necessarily satisfied with how they left camp in what
- 21:15Speaker 10: they were gonna again present and made the move after camp.
- 21:18Speaker 10: So he and he's had a dynamite influence. He's one
- 21:23Speaker 10: of the top quarterback pressure guys in the league. He
- 21:26Speaker 10: changes the plays, he's everything they want. I think he's
- 21:29Speaker 10: been a great presence in the locker room. The coach
- 21:32Speaker 10: the other day just went on and Matt Lafleur went
- 21:34Speaker 10: on and on about the presence and what he's brought
- 21:37Speaker 10: and the confidency brings the rest of that defense. It
- 21:40Speaker 10: helps other positions by just being on the field and
- 21:43Speaker 10: the attention he draws. So but yeah, I mean, you
- 21:47Speaker 10: make a move like that, it's got to be. That
- 21:50Speaker 10: was an earthquake type move. That was a resounding Hey,
- 21:54Speaker 10: we are in it to win it. Like our GM
- 21:55Speaker 10: said earlier before camp began, we're thinking in terms of
- 21:59Speaker 10: championships and not just getting through the division and sneaking
- 22:02Speaker 10: into the playoffs. We are looking for the very top
- 22:05Speaker 10: and by getting a guy like Parsons, they send the
- 22:07Speaker 10: signal to the players into the league that that's exactly
- 22:10Speaker 10: where they're aiming.
- 22:11Speaker 2: We're visiting with Kevin Harlan. For those who don't know,
- 22:14Speaker 2: your dad was an executive with the Green Bay Packers.
- 22:16Speaker 2: You spent part of your childhood in Green Bay. What
- 22:19Speaker 2: are some of your fondest memories about being around lambeau
- 22:22Speaker 2: Field as a kid.
- 22:24Speaker 10: I've got one run off the bet that I've told
- 22:25Speaker 10: a couple of times already this week. When I was
- 22:27Speaker 10: a ball boy for the Packers in the early seventies,
- 22:30Speaker 10: and we'd have our lunch break during training camp, I
- 22:34Speaker 10: would sneak up the stairs into the press box at
- 22:38Speaker 10: lambeau Field, the old lambeau Field, and go in the
- 22:42Speaker 10: break the broadcast booth of the radio network, it didn't
- 22:46Speaker 10: matter which close the door, and do imaginary games in
- 22:50Speaker 10: my head. When I was like eleven and twelve years old.
- 22:54Speaker 10: And then when I got to actually broadcast when I
- 22:55Speaker 10: was thirteen fourteen years old at our high school radio station,
- 22:59Speaker 10: would go on there even more and practice these imaginary
- 23:02Speaker 10: games in lambeau Field in a broadcast booth onto an
- 23:06Speaker 10: empty field, and a and not a soul could be
- 23:09Speaker 10: seen in the Bowl of lambeau Field, and that's where
- 23:12Speaker 10: I would do these imaginary games out loud where no
- 23:15Speaker 10: one could hear me, and I did that for many years,
- 23:18Speaker 10: would go up there. I'm sure that had there been
- 23:20Speaker 10: a cleaning person up there, someone that was getting something
- 23:23Speaker 10: in the press box would maybe listing what's what's going
- 23:27Speaker 10: on there? Like who? And then it never happened. I
- 23:31Speaker 10: was never caught, but it would always sneak in and
- 23:34Speaker 10: get in and shut the door and do these games
- 23:37Speaker 10: for like a half hour and just and here I
- 23:39Speaker 10: was eleven, twelve years old broadcasting in lambeau Field. And
- 23:43Speaker 10: then as as luck would have it, and as the
- 23:47Speaker 10: great fortune that has been bestowed upon my career would
- 23:50Speaker 10: would lead me to do games and Lambeau eventually do
- 23:54Speaker 10: their preseason games as I've done since two thousand and three,
- 23:57Speaker 10: done multiple championship games there, Monday night football games, and
- 24:03Speaker 10: a lot of Fox and CBS games there. So I'm
- 24:06Speaker 10: living out a dream every time I'm in that stadium
- 24:08Speaker 10: doing a game. And now I've got my family in
- 24:10Speaker 10: the seats right below me. W're season ticket holders. And
- 24:16Speaker 10: my dad was there for thirty seven years, and he
- 24:19Speaker 10: was the one who hired, Holmgren hired Ron Wolf, was
- 24:24Speaker 10: in the room when they made the trade to get FARV,
- 24:26Speaker 10: made the deal to sign Reggie White, drafted Rogers hired
- 24:31Speaker 10: Mike McCarthy. So he was there, Dan hiring two Hall
- 24:36Speaker 10: of Fame Super Bowl winning gms, two Super Bowl winning coaches,
- 24:42Speaker 10: and two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. He was in that
- 24:46Speaker 10: room when those decisions were made, and as president and CEO,
- 24:50Speaker 10: the buck always stopped with him. So you could have
- 24:52Speaker 10: a clever GM or coach or whatever personnel guy say hey,
- 24:56Speaker 10: we should do this, but at the end of the day,
- 24:58Speaker 10: he had to a prove it, and he did. And
- 25:02Speaker 10: so we're most and he's still alive. He's eighty nine.
- 25:04Speaker 10: My mom is eighty seven. They live in Green Bay,
- 25:07Speaker 10: is a five minute drive from lambeau Field. So they're
- 25:10Speaker 10: very much with it. By the grace of God, their
- 25:14Speaker 10: health is good enough. They still get it, and they
- 25:16Speaker 10: watch games and they enjoy it like a lot of
- 25:18Speaker 10: fans do.
- 25:20Speaker 2: One of the things I admire about you is that
- 25:22Speaker 2: you don't rest on your laurels. Are you on a
- 25:24Speaker 2: never ending quest to improve as a sports broadcast?
- 25:29Speaker 10: Well, like you, we have a same I think spirit
- 25:33Speaker 10: in this business, dan Is, your accolades would say that
- 25:37Speaker 10: that if you do rest and exhale, there are younger
- 25:41Speaker 10: broadcasters that are just salivating to be in our seats.
- 25:45Speaker 10: Right is the voice of a team. You're a voice
- 25:47Speaker 10: of a major college and an NFL team. There are
- 25:50Speaker 10: not many of those guys in the business. You're one
- 25:52Speaker 10: of them and have done it so well for so
- 25:54Speaker 10: many years. And so I never take this job lightly.
- 25:58Speaker 10: And I think it goes back because it's not that
- 26:01Speaker 10: we're scared or we're frightened about what might be. It's
- 26:04Speaker 10: that we enjoy the process of getting better. So, like you,
- 26:08Speaker 10: I listen to my games, I critique my work. I
- 26:11Speaker 10: feel like, you know, I could do that better, I
- 26:13Speaker 10: can improve in this area or whatever. And I like
- 26:16Speaker 10: that challenge. It keeps your mind going and evolving in
- 26:19Speaker 10: the right direction. There will be a day when I'm sure,
- 26:23Speaker 10: speaking for myself, that I say, you know, I don't
- 26:26Speaker 10: know that I've got the love of the business that
- 26:28Speaker 10: I once had to want to get better. Let me,
- 26:30Speaker 10: let me just get in there and just do the
- 26:32Speaker 10: game and then move on to the next. I really
- 26:34Speaker 10: don't look at it like that. I think I'm a
- 26:37Speaker 10: part paranoid, part scared. I feel like I'm young enough
- 26:41Speaker 10: that I've still got a lot of good years ahead
- 26:42Speaker 10: of me. But I want to make sure that I
- 26:45Speaker 10: don't when that day comes that I do leave that
- 26:48Speaker 10: I'm I'm not regretting not putting in the work necessary
- 26:53Speaker 10: to be up to date. Let me tell you, I
- 26:55Speaker 10: don't know what you think, but I'm watching when we
- 26:58Speaker 10: do these games, like the offenses have never move faster,
- 27:00Speaker 10: there's never been more no huddle, there's never been more
- 27:04Speaker 10: sub packages coming in and staying on top of that
- 27:07Speaker 10: in a game from way up into the press. That's
- 27:08Speaker 10: a hard thing to do. It's hard, and I do
- 27:12Speaker 10: it on radio and on TV. Both they're different ways
- 27:15Speaker 10: of looking at it, but the same thing is, Man,
- 27:17Speaker 10: you've got to pay attention and you've got to make
- 27:19Speaker 10: sure that you go into these games prepared. So I'm scared.
- 27:24Speaker 10: I read I read a quote by Scully one time,
- 27:27Speaker 10: the great legendary Dodger broadcaster, who said, fear drives me
- 27:31Speaker 10: a lot. I never want to let my listeners down.
- 27:34Speaker 10: I never want to let myself down by not being
- 27:36Speaker 10: fully prepared but into the game and staying ahead of
- 27:40Speaker 10: the posse in other words, making sure that they find
- 27:42Speaker 10: no reason to really attack my work. And that's what
- 27:46Speaker 10: kept him going. And I read that as a young broadcaster,
- 27:48Speaker 10: so that's that's a good model to live by, and
- 27:50Speaker 10: so I kind of have.
- 27:52Speaker 2: That totally rings true. Leave it to Vin Scully to
- 27:55Speaker 2: nail it. Final question for Kevin Harlan. I'm sure you've
- 27:58Speaker 2: heard this one before, but I've never your answer. If
- 28:01Speaker 2: you could call a sporting event that you've never had
- 28:04Speaker 2: the opportunity to do and probably won't have the opportunity
- 28:08Speaker 2: to do, what would it be.
- 28:10Speaker 10: Well, I've had the chance a couple of times to
- 28:12Speaker 10: do Major League Baseball. When I was in my twenties
- 28:14Speaker 10: and doing the University of Missouri and the Chiefs on
- 28:18Speaker 10: radio Saturday Sunday back to back like you do with
- 28:20Speaker 10: the Bearcats and the Bengals. There was an opportunity in
- 28:24Speaker 10: my twenties, newly married with our first child, to do
- 28:28Speaker 10: Cardinal Baseball with Jack Buck and Mike Shannon on KMOX
- 28:32Speaker 10: and drove in there and did a practice game, and
- 28:34Speaker 10: they heard the tape and they liked it, and it
- 28:37Speaker 10: was there, and I chose not to my dad before
- 28:41Speaker 10: I became the president of the Packers, was with the
- 28:43Speaker 10: Saint Louis Baseball Cardinals and was the pr director back
- 28:47Speaker 10: in the sixties, and he got out of baseball because
- 28:50Speaker 10: it wasn't he thought he loved the job. It was
- 28:52Speaker 10: a great job, but not for a family man. It's
- 28:55Speaker 10: a hard job if you're a family man and are
- 28:57Speaker 10: away from your family that one hundred and sixty two
- 28:59Speaker 10: games and away from your family and all that, and
- 29:00Speaker 10: every day, and during the great summer months where you know,
- 29:04Speaker 10: vacations are gone now and so all that. So when
- 29:08Speaker 10: he got out, you know that I remember the decision
- 29:10Speaker 10: process he made, and my wife and I made the
- 29:14Speaker 10: decision not to do baseball, and then had a chance
- 29:17Speaker 10: with the Red Sox not too long ago to be
- 29:19Speaker 10: involved in their broadcasts and chose not to do that.
- 29:22Speaker 10: But and answer you to question, if I could on
- 29:25Speaker 10: radio doing play by play. The great broadcasters in our
- 29:29Speaker 10: business have some kind of a baseball background. And when
- 29:32Speaker 10: I talk to young broadcasters, say do a lot of
- 29:35Speaker 10: radio baseball because it will help you develop voice and
- 29:38Speaker 10: pacing and reporting and all these things that we need
- 29:41Speaker 10: to be whether you do basketball or football, if you
- 29:43Speaker 10: can do baseball, I think you can do the other sports,
- 29:46Speaker 10: and I do, and it's great for delivery development and
- 29:49Speaker 10: voice development and cadence and all those things. But doing
- 29:53Speaker 10: a game on radio, baseball on radio some random Wednesday night,
- 29:58Speaker 10: maybe in July, and just describing as the shadows are growing,
- 30:01Speaker 10: as the sun is setting, and described because you've got
- 30:04Speaker 10: time between pitches to describe what's going on. In football, man,
- 30:08Speaker 10: you got doing doo doo doo doom, and in basketball,
- 30:12Speaker 10: so like you're constantly just trying to keep up with
- 30:14Speaker 10: the action. But the one thing on radio that makes
- 30:17Speaker 10: it so great is when you can paint the total
- 30:19Speaker 10: picture and you can hear the popcorn guy in the
- 30:21Speaker 10: stands that reaches that microphone or or or you can
- 30:24Speaker 10: see a movement of a shortstop a little bit more
- 30:26Speaker 10: to the left, a little bit more to the right.
- 30:28Speaker 10: And I remember reading one thing about Red Barber and
- 30:31Speaker 10: how he, when he was broadcasting the Brooklyn Dodgers, was
- 30:36Speaker 10: describing a rainstorm that he could see building over left field,
- 30:41Speaker 10: over Brooklyn, and how it was moving slowly toward Ebbett's Field,
- 30:45Speaker 10: and how then there were rain drops, and how and
- 30:48Speaker 10: how the rain drops on the bill of the cap
- 30:50Speaker 10: of Pee Wee Reese he could see the drops and
- 30:53Speaker 10: he could see the wind picking up in the dust
- 30:55Speaker 10: blowing off the mound, and I thought, man, I like,
- 30:58Speaker 10: those those are moments that just there. If you saw
- 31:02Speaker 10: it, it wouldn't resonate, but when you hear it in the
- 31:04Speaker 10: theater of your mind, it just builds this great picture.
- 31:08Speaker 10: And I thought, that's what I wanted to do. And
- 31:10Speaker 10: that's where I got my love of radio, which I
- 31:13Speaker 10: do every Monday night. And there's not a lot of
- 31:17Speaker 10: time to describe that kind of stuff, but when there is,
- 31:20Speaker 10: and when you can describe it, I think those calls,
- 31:22Speaker 10: your call of a Joe Burrow touchdown. Those calls if
- 31:26Speaker 10: you listen to them driving by yourself on I seventy
- 31:29Speaker 10: five or wherever you may be, like, they stick in
- 31:32Speaker 10: your head, like you can almost picture it more here
- 31:34Speaker 10: than you could if you saw it with your own
- 31:36Speaker 10: two eyes. So I love the challenge that radio brings,
- 31:40Speaker 10: and that that's where my love of doing radio baseball,
- 31:43Speaker 10: I think would be. And a long answer to your question,
- 31:46Speaker 10: and I'm sorry, but that's I love those I love
- 31:48Speaker 10: those challenges of creating in people's minds that that vision
- 31:52Speaker 10: where they can see in the theater of their mind.
- 31:55Speaker 10: What happened, what kind of catch, what kind of ground
- 31:56Speaker 10: ball was grabbed? You know, what kind of jump shot
- 31:59Speaker 10: was taken? Where it is on the floor. Those things,
- 32:01Speaker 10: to me, that's why get into broadcasting, the challenge of
- 32:04Speaker 10: doing that the right way.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Nobody has done football on the radio.
- 32:09Speaker 10: Batter now, hold now, hold on. Now, you are too kind.
- 32:13Speaker 10: We're friends, and that's why I you say that, I've
- 32:15Speaker 10: heard your No. No, I'm going to disagree. I love
- 32:19Speaker 10: your call, and that's why you've been honored so many
- 32:21Speaker 10: times in a very competitive state, and why you have
- 32:23Speaker 10: the reputation you have in our business. But I join
- 32:27Speaker 10: with you. We are joined at the hip. We love
- 32:29Speaker 10: our job, we love radio, and aren't we lucky to
- 32:32Speaker 10: be in this stage, at this stage of our lives,
- 32:35Speaker 10: to have these kind of platforms and calling NFL games
- 32:38Speaker 10: and major college football and basketball games like that? It
- 32:41Speaker 10: gets no better than that, does it?
- 32:43Speaker 1: Well?
- 32:43Speaker 10: How lucky are we? How lucky are we?
- 32:45Speaker 2: Couldn't be any luckier? And Samboard is going to love
- 32:48Speaker 2: this segment. Kevin, Thank you so much, my friend. Really
- 32:51Speaker 2: appreciate your time. Look forward to seeing you this weekend.
- 32:54Speaker 10: Love you, Dan, and I love you. As a friend
- 32:55Speaker 10: and who's a broadcaster. It's so fun to visit. And
- 32:57Speaker 10: I'll see you in Lambeau the Cathedral of NFL football
- 33:03Speaker 10: Sunday morning. I'll look forward to that.

- 33:16Speaker 2: business and community to a new level, and by Kettering
- 33:19Speaker 2: Health the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health
- 33:22Speaker 2: is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Kevin Harlan
- 33:27Speaker 2: called Lambeau Field the Cathedral of NFL football, and nobody
- 33:31Speaker 2: at pay Corp Stadium knows that better than the Bengals
- 33:34Speaker 2: new defensive line coach this year, Jerry Montgomery. Jerry, you
- 33:39Speaker 2: are a Packers assistant coach for nine years now you
- 33:42Speaker 2: are going back to Lambeau. It can't be just another
- 33:45Speaker 2: game for you. Is there anything in particular you're looking
- 33:47Speaker 2: forward to?
- 33:49Speaker 1: You know what? Being there for nine years?
- 33:52Speaker 13: I have when I say friends are like family, meaning
- 33:57Speaker 13: there's still guys there that I work with, but more importantly,
- 34:00Speaker 13: our kids grew up there, so we have a cabin
- 34:03Speaker 13: in Eagle River, Wisconsin. We will always call that home
- 34:06Speaker 13: now regardless of where we live at. So it'll be
- 34:10Speaker 13: great to see all of my neighbors and friends. And
- 34:16Speaker 13: then you know what's cool is my son is getting
- 34:18Speaker 13: his first collegiate start at linebacker against the Badger Saturday night.
- 34:22Speaker 13: So I'm gonna try to sneak out and get to
- 34:24Speaker 13: that game. So he played, you know, they went to
- 34:29Speaker 13: the state championship and he played in Madison. Now he's
- 34:31Speaker 13: getting his first start in Madison against Madison. So yeah,
- 34:35Speaker 13: so we'll have a lot of friends all week in
- 34:36Speaker 13: to see.
- 34:37Speaker 2: I've only been to Lambeau once. That's when the Bengals
- 34:40Speaker 2: played there eight years ago. It's a bucket list type
- 34:42Speaker 2: experience for me. When you work there every day, do
- 34:46Speaker 2: you feel the history and do you feel like it's
- 34:48Speaker 2: a big advantage.
- 34:50Speaker 13: You definitely feel the history. It's an unbelievable place to
- 34:55Speaker 13: work and unbelievable place to play a footba. You walk
- 35:01Speaker 13: through the tunnels and you feel it. It's neat even
- 35:05Speaker 13: practicing there. There's an air about it. So and what's
- 35:08Speaker 13: cool is when you pull in and you see now
- 35:11Speaker 13: it's a little different now, because people have tore down
- 35:13Speaker 13: those homes and built massive places across the street. They're
- 35:16Speaker 13: big tailgate places. But it's just it's a really neat environment.
- 35:22Speaker 13: It's probably as close to college environment as you'll feel
- 35:27Speaker 13: in most places. But yeah, neat venue, a lot of
- 35:31Speaker 13: history and cool place.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Green Bay is the smallest market in the US that
- 35:35Speaker 2: has a professional sports team. It's a city of about
- 35:37Speaker 2: one hundred thousand people. As a Packers player or coach,
- 35:41Speaker 2: do you feel like you're in a fish bowl a
- 35:43Speaker 2: little bit just because there's such a spotlight on the Packers?
- 35:47Speaker 13: I would say, you know, maybe for a player. As
- 35:49Speaker 13: a coach, I'd say no. I think people are very welcoming,
- 35:53Speaker 13: welcoming and they treat you as one and especially if
- 35:58Speaker 13: you're a normal person. If you know, there's not too
- 36:01Speaker 13: many people that walk around meaning you know, and think
- 36:06Speaker 13: that they're better than you. So when you act like that,
- 36:08Speaker 13: that's when you stand alone. But for a player, I
- 36:11Speaker 13: could see people knowing who you are. But I think
- 36:13Speaker 13: those guys, you know, it's Milwaukee's two hours away, Chicago's
- 36:16Speaker 13: three hours away, so.
- 36:17Speaker 2: We're visiting the Bengals defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery let's
- 36:21Speaker 2: talk defense. Seems a little odd to say, maybe after
- 36:24Speaker 2: the opponent scored thirty seven points, But I thought the
- 36:26Speaker 2: defense played pretty well last week against the NFL's number
- 36:29Speaker 2: one offense. You forced five punts. Nobody's forced more against Detroit.
- 36:33Speaker 2: You got to take away in the game what was
- 36:35Speaker 2: good last Sunday, what wasn't up to your standard.
- 36:40Speaker 13: We're taking the right steps each and every week. You know,
- 36:45Speaker 13: they were average and I don't know if it was
- 36:47Speaker 13: like four point nine or five something or carry. And
- 36:50Speaker 13: if we don't give up the one big run, we
- 36:51Speaker 13: keep them below two, below three, we give up the
- 36:55Speaker 13: one big one.
- 36:56Speaker 1: You know.
- 36:56Speaker 13: So like we're building a mindset and a culture from
- 37:02Speaker 13: a run game standpoint, and you know, you got to
- 37:06Speaker 13: earn the right to pass rush, and so I think
- 37:08Speaker 13: those guys, we're doing that and we're getting in them
- 37:11Speaker 13: some longer down in distance, more than they've probably had
- 37:13Speaker 13: all year.
- 37:14Speaker 1: But you know, so it starts there.
- 37:16Speaker 13: So you're just building a culture and identity, and you know,
- 37:20Speaker 13: guys are playing hard. No one's quitting. You know, we
- 37:23Speaker 13: got to eliminate the mistakes that are happening, and it's football.
- 37:28Speaker 13: Things are going to happen. It's just like, you know,
- 37:30Speaker 13: you can't let them compound. But we're heading in the
- 37:33Speaker 13: right direction. We're nowhere near where we're going to be,
- 37:36Speaker 13: but you know, hopefully people are seeing the change and
- 37:40Speaker 13: the guys are working to stremely hard.
- 37:42Speaker 2: One negative has been opening drives. Opponents have scored touchdowns
- 37:46Speaker 2: in for the first five games. Has there been a
- 37:48Speaker 2: common denominator? Is there something that stands out on those
- 37:51Speaker 2: opening drives?
- 37:52Speaker 1: We talk about that every day.
- 37:55Speaker 13: I don't know if it was Cleveland and then Minnesota,
- 37:58Speaker 13: but you know, you got penalties that extend drives. One
- 38:02Speaker 13: of those drives, there was three or four third down penalties.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Uh.
- 38:06Speaker 13: Some you know are questionable, but like, if you know,
- 38:11Speaker 13: we can eliminate some of those things. We're off the field,
- 38:14Speaker 13: you know, but uh, once the guy's settled down, it's
- 38:17Speaker 13: it's been you know, pretty good and then then there's
- 38:19Speaker 13: a hiccup. Right, But uh, you know, I think if
- 38:22Speaker 13: we can eliminate the mistakes, uh and play fast and
- 38:25Speaker 13: then tackle and open field, uh, I think we're gonna
- 38:28Speaker 13: you know, be better and improve each week.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Let's discuss some individuals.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Trey Hendrickson had two sacks last week, he's got four
- 38:34Speaker 2: in the first five games.
- 38:36Speaker 1: It's your first year coaching him. What stands out, Yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 1: it's it's important to him.
- 38:41Speaker 13: You know, he he wants to learn about, you know,
- 38:45Speaker 13: the offensive line and what they're doing. You know, he's
- 38:49Speaker 13: he's invested in in playing the run. And you know,
- 38:53Speaker 13: he knows, like, you can't get to third down if
- 38:56Speaker 13: you can't stop the run. And so I think he's
- 38:58Speaker 13: really put an emphasis on those details. But like, you know,
- 39:03Speaker 13: it's important to him. You talk about a guy that
- 39:05Speaker 13: comes in, he takes care of his body, He watches film,
- 39:07Speaker 13: he studies his opponent, so he knows, you know, what
- 39:10Speaker 13: should work, how the guy's gonna set him, you know.
- 39:13Speaker 13: So it's it's it's neat to be around, you know,
- 39:15Speaker 13: a pro.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Joseph Osai and Miles Murphy each had a sack last week.
- 39:19Speaker 2: What are you working on with them at this stage
- 39:21Speaker 2: of their development?
- 39:23Speaker 13: Consistency, whether it's in the run game. They both had opportunities. Uh,
- 39:29Speaker 13: you know, you know one of the sacks that Miles got,
- 39:32Speaker 13: you know, Joe created it because he was able to
- 39:35Speaker 13: penetrate the B gap and then Miles played off of them.
- 39:38Speaker 13: So it's not just a selfish individual. Hey I'm gonna
- 39:41Speaker 13: go win. I mean, he did a selfish deal by penetrate,
- 39:45Speaker 13: penetrating the B gap and allow Miles to get a sack, right, So,
- 39:49Speaker 13: so all those things are a part of it, but
- 39:52Speaker 13: just being consistent, whether it's the run game, open field,
- 39:56Speaker 13: tackling those type of things, Like I'm very demanding and
- 40:01Speaker 13: hold those guys to a really high standard, and I
- 40:04Speaker 13: think sometimes I could feel like the world's falling down
- 40:07Speaker 13: on them, when in reality it's like, hey, this happened,
- 40:10Speaker 13: let's clean it up, all right. Uh, you know, but
- 40:12Speaker 13: don't don't don't you know, let one mistake fall into
- 40:16Speaker 13: another one, because you can't move on, you know. And
- 40:19Speaker 13: so those are the things that we're trying to work
- 40:21Speaker 13: to get them past.
- 40:22Speaker 2: You are demanding and it's fun to watch, and I
- 40:25Speaker 2: get the sense from everybody that I've talked to that
- 40:27Speaker 2: they like being pushed. Is that what you're looking for
- 40:29Speaker 2: from the guys that you have on your D line?
- 40:32Speaker 13: I want I want guys that it's important to being
- 40:35Speaker 13: out there. It's important. Learning the process and learning what
- 40:41Speaker 13: your opponent does is important. If it's not important to
- 40:44Speaker 13: you for those things, then like you don't love the game.
- 40:49Speaker 13: Like the best guys I've been around, right, and we're
- 40:53Speaker 13: going to Green Bay. Kenny Clark was one of the
- 40:55Speaker 13: best to ever do it. But it wasn't that he
- 40:57Speaker 13: was like super Ubertalent. He loved football, And like, I
- 41:01Speaker 13: got a room full of guys that, like you know,
- 41:03Speaker 13: they love it. They're learning learning more bald than they've
- 41:06Speaker 13: ever learned. But like, I expect them to play at
- 41:11Speaker 13: a high level, and I my standard for them is
- 41:14Speaker 13: super high, but I expect more out of them. It
- 41:17Speaker 13: can't be how bad do I want it, because that
- 41:19Speaker 13: doesn't mean anything. I don't play the game. If you
- 41:22Speaker 13: guys don't put in the time and effort, it's not
- 41:25Speaker 13: gonna show up on the field. And I tell them,
- 41:27Speaker 13: what you put into it, you get out of it.
- 41:29Speaker 13: So if you take me as being hard and demanding
- 41:33Speaker 13: on you is a bad thing, all right, you're never
- 41:36Speaker 13: going to grow, all right, and you're never gonna get
- 41:39Speaker 13: to where you need to get a lot of guys
- 41:41Speaker 13: understand I'm trying to help them, not hurt them. It's
- 41:44Speaker 13: not belittle on them. It's trying to make them better.
- 41:46Speaker 13: It's trying to get them to see the game through
- 41:49Speaker 13: my lens are to see the game easier, and the
- 41:52Speaker 13: guys that are doing that are making huge strides.
- 41:55Speaker 2: BJ Hill is the leading tackler among the guys up front.
- 41:58Speaker 2: What have you enjoyed about coaching Bj?
- 42:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, he's smart, same thing. He's another guy
- 42:03Speaker 1: who's done it.
- 42:03Speaker 13: He's been productive right in the past, and we're teaching
- 42:06Speaker 13: him a little bit different ways how to do it.
- 42:08Speaker 13: But you know, he's adapting and he's doing it, and
- 42:11Speaker 13: he's playing good ball for us, and we need him
- 42:13Speaker 13: in there, and he's been stouting to run and we
- 42:15Speaker 13: need him to continue to do that.
- 42:18Speaker 2: You haven't had Shamar since week two. I thought he
- 42:21Speaker 2: got better every day at training camp from watching practice.
- 42:24Speaker 2: What did you think of his camp and the first
- 42:25Speaker 2: two games that he was able.
- 42:26Speaker 13: To play, Yeah, like a roller coaster, right, like a
- 42:29Speaker 13: guy that hadn't been here all off season or all
- 42:32Speaker 13: training camp, right, And then and then he showed flashes
- 42:35Speaker 13: of like why he went where he went, and so
- 42:39Speaker 13: it's it's a work in progress, but like when he
- 42:43Speaker 13: gets it, when it all clicks for him, the tools
- 42:45Speaker 13: are there, I see, like a great player in this
- 42:48Speaker 13: league for a long time, right, and so he's going
- 42:51Speaker 13: through a process right now through this injury, Like he's
- 42:54Speaker 13: learning how to try to be a pro with rehab
- 42:57Speaker 13: and all that. So, I mean everything he's doing right
- 42:59Speaker 13: now is new and it's all a process for.
- 43:02Speaker 2: So final thing for d line coach Jerry Montgomery, the
- 43:05Speaker 2: big news this week is obviously the acquisition of Joe Flacco.
- 43:08Speaker 2: You've squared off against him a handful of times in
- 43:11Speaker 2: the NFL, including Week one this year. What do you
- 43:13Speaker 2: think Joe Flacco brings to the table.
- 43:16Speaker 1: The guys played a lot of football.
- 43:17Speaker 13: I mean, I tell the story I told him when
- 43:20Speaker 13: I saw him last night, Like we were at Northern
- 43:23Speaker 13: iowhen he was at Delaware, he beat us to go
- 43:25Speaker 13: to the National Championship game. We were undefeated team. We
- 43:28Speaker 13: had like nine sack opportunities, but we fell down his
- 43:31Speaker 13: body like six of those, right, So we get those
- 43:34Speaker 13: nine sacks. It's done, but veteran experience. The guy's got.
- 43:39Speaker 13: He's massive, right, he could see it.
- 43:40Speaker 1: He can make it.
- 43:41Speaker 13: All the throws and you know, even the picks that
- 43:44Speaker 13: happened our game, I mean those were tips into flections
- 43:47Speaker 13: right like the balls were. And I think they've had
- 43:50Speaker 13: eleven drops there. I mean, he's gonna have some great weapons,
- 43:54Speaker 13: but he can make the throws.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Veteran leadership.
- 43:57Speaker 13: The guys won a Super Bowl like so he's done
- 43:59Speaker 13: it and it'd be nice to see what he can do.
- 44:02Speaker 2: We're gonna get our opportunity soon, Kerry. Appreciate your time
- 44:05Speaker 2: enjoying the trip back to Green Bank.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Yep, thank you very much.
- 44:08Speaker 2: When Jerry was with the Packers, he helped turn Kenny
- 44:11Speaker 2: Clark into a three time Pro Bowl defensive tackle. They
- 44:14Speaker 2: won't see each other this weekend because Clark is now
- 44:17Speaker 2: a Dallas Cowboy.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Back.
- 44:19Speaker 2: In August, the Packers traded him and two first round
- 44:22Speaker 2: draft picks to Dallas for Micah Parsons. The Bengals have
- 44:26Speaker 2: faced Parsons twice before. In twenty twenty two, he had
- 44:31Speaker 2: two sacks and five quarterback hits as the Cowboys beat
- 44:34Speaker 2: the Bengals by three, but last year he had no
- 44:38Speaker 2: sacks and no tackles as Cincinnati beat Dallas by seven.
- 44:43Speaker 2: In that game, he was mostly matched up against the
- 44:46Speaker 2: Marius Mims.
- 44:47Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean, I think Michael's the best d N
- 44:50Speaker 14: in the NFL other than Miles Garrett. If you hasn't me,
- 44:52Speaker 14: it's just the guys who want them played against. The
- 44:54Speaker 14: gonna be a challenge, it always, especially on the road,
- 44:57Speaker 14: it's gonna be a game. Worse about me again, honestly,
- 44:59Speaker 14: just just doing with coaches telling me in practice and
- 45:02Speaker 14: you know, how can you know, trying to neutralize him
- 45:04Speaker 14: as much as possible and knowing you know, he's gonna
- 45:06Speaker 14: make his fair share of plays, you know, I mean,
- 45:08Speaker 14: it's gonna happen with a guy like that. But really,
- 45:10Speaker 14: like I said, my mind said, is really to just
- 45:12Speaker 14: you know, go out there and play the game football,
- 45:14Speaker 14: and no I can play, continue to get better, and
- 45:16Speaker 14: you know, if I let one mistake, like not let
- 45:19Speaker 14: one mistake or one you know, one small minor, you know,
- 45:22Speaker 14: step in that game and turn into like the whole game. So,
- 45:24Speaker 14: like I said, going against a great player, not one
- 45:27Speaker 14: of the best players on defense and ever, I mean,
- 45:29Speaker 14: I think he's a good like I said, you know
- 45:30Speaker 14: he's a good player, but I know he's a good player.
- 45:32Speaker 14: But I said, I'm ready for the challenge. You know,
- 45:34Speaker 14: like I said, last year he was with another team.
- 45:36Speaker 14: Last year played in Dallas, and this year is gonna
- 45:38Speaker 14: be in on Green Bay. So it's gonna be fun.
- 45:40Speaker 2: The Packers are moving Parsons around quite a bit, so
- 45:43Speaker 2: Mems and Orlando Brown Junior, we'll both have to play well.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Wayne Larravie, the Voice of the Packers, joined Dave Lapham
- 45:50Speaker 2: and me on the Bengals Game Plan Show this week
- 45:53Speaker 2: and we started our know the Faust segment by asking
- 45:56Speaker 2: about Parsons.
- 45:58Speaker 3: It's given that defense a certain swagger that maybe it
- 46:01Speaker 3: didn't have before. It was a good defense last year.
- 46:05Speaker 3: There's no question, a top ten defense, but they feel
- 46:07Speaker 3: Micah Parsons can maybe push them over the top. He
- 46:10Speaker 3: gives them, you know, he makes the four man rush
- 46:14Speaker 3: effective in terms of pass rush and that's something that
- 46:18Speaker 3: they struggled with here. Ago and Jeff Hafley, the defensive
- 46:21Speaker 3: coordinated at a tremendous job of generating pass rush pressure
- 46:25Speaker 3: and getting sacks, but he had to do it with
- 46:28Speaker 3: blitzing and that type of thing. They're more prone today
- 46:32Speaker 3: to be a four man pass rush, and that's what
- 46:35Speaker 3: they were hoping to be when all this whole thing
- 46:38Speaker 3: was put together. And so Micah Parsons, he makes the
- 46:41Speaker 3: people around him better. You know. Up until last week,
- 46:45Speaker 3: Rashan Gary was leading the league in sacks. And you
- 46:48Speaker 3: know that's the difference. Having Parsons on one side and
- 46:53Speaker 3: Gary on the other side makes Rashan Gary much more
- 46:56Speaker 3: effective because he's not facing as many double teams.
- 47:00Speaker 6: When when the trade was made for Sean Gary was
- 47:03Speaker 6: probably the most appreciative guy in the organization. It's like, man,
- 47:06Speaker 6: finally I got somebody else on the other side that's
- 47:09Speaker 6: going to take take some of the pressure off and
- 47:12Speaker 6: he'll be facing a lot of the double teams. When
- 47:15Speaker 6: I watched the Green Bay Packers defense on tape, I'll
- 47:19Speaker 6: tell you parts is pretty stout in the running game.
- 47:22Speaker 6: Now he plays the run, he doesn't, you know, he
- 47:25Speaker 6: doesn't just kind of show up or really not show
- 47:28Speaker 6: up for a couple of snaps and then hope, hope
- 47:31Speaker 6: for a third and long and see if I can
- 47:33Speaker 6: sack the quarterback and increase my sack numbers. Run a
- 47:37Speaker 6: big total on sacks for the season. This guy is
- 47:40Speaker 6: a complete football player. He plays both sides of it,
- 47:43Speaker 6: doesn't he.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Yeah, he does. And you know that's something he kind
- 47:46Speaker 3: of got a bad rap by Gary Jones about his
- 47:49Speaker 3: run defense. But you know what we've seen, he's been
- 47:53Speaker 3: very solid in holding the edge and making plays in
- 47:56Speaker 3: the running game, So that's helped a lot. I mean,
- 47:59Speaker 3: the Packers giving up seventy seven yards rushing second in
- 48:02Speaker 3: the league. You know, they had a little bit more
- 48:06Speaker 3: of a rough day in Dallas. Dallas got a season
- 48:08Speaker 3: high one hundred and seventeen rushing yards against them. But
- 48:11Speaker 3: that game was a track meet, so you know, I
- 48:14Speaker 3: don't know how much you can put into the defensive
- 48:16Speaker 3: figures of that game.
- 48:19Speaker 2: The voice of the Packers, Wayne Larabee, is our guest.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Green Bay opened with very impressive wins over Detroit and Washington.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Attention was growing before We're talking about this team as
- 48:30Speaker 2: a real Super Bowl favorite. Then they laid an egg
- 48:33Speaker 2: in Cleveland. What happened in that Cleveland game.
- 48:37Speaker 3: You know, Dan, I mean, they had control of that game,
- 48:41Speaker 3: they really did. I mean they were struggling offensively. Cleveland's
- 48:44Speaker 3: defensive line dominated the Packers offensive line. The Packers have
- 48:48Speaker 3: had some injuries in their offensive line. Zach tom probably
- 48:52Speaker 3: their best offensive line, been played one play in that
- 48:55Speaker 3: game and it went out with an injury that he
- 48:58Speaker 3: came into the game with. Meanwhile, you know the left guard,
- 49:04Speaker 3: you know Banks, whom they acquired from San Francisco, kind
- 49:07Speaker 3: of a road grader or the running game. Aaron Banks.
- 49:09Speaker 3: He's missed seven He's missed seven games last year and
- 49:13Speaker 3: he's missed two now this year. So having components of
- 49:17Speaker 3: the offensive line down and having to shuffle that line
- 49:21Speaker 3: against the Cleveland front that you guys saw opening I
- 49:24Speaker 3: believe it was opening day. It's pretty good, pretty good unit,
- 49:27Speaker 3: and you want to be at your best when you're
- 49:29Speaker 3: going up against that group. So they struggled offensively, defensively,
- 49:33Speaker 3: they're in command of that ball game. And then the
- 49:35Speaker 3: special team's issue occurred and they had a field goal
- 49:39Speaker 3: block and boom, all of a sudden, you know, Cincinnati
- 49:43Speaker 3: was or i should say Cleveland was back in the
- 49:45Speaker 3: game and snuck away with a win.
- 49:47Speaker 6: Let's talk a little bit about Joe Flacco. What did
- 49:51Speaker 6: you think of Joe Flacco in that football game? How
- 49:54Speaker 6: did he perform against the Green Bay Packers?
- 49:57Speaker 3: To your eye, well, you know and studying him they
- 50:02Speaker 3: going into the game. He can still fling it and
- 50:06Speaker 3: he can still get a downfield. Two things happened in Cleveland.
- 50:10Speaker 3: Number One, they were just starting to find their running
- 50:14Speaker 3: back and that kid that they drafted in the second
- 50:16Speaker 3: round is going to be a really good runner, but
- 50:19Speaker 3: they really don't have a solid round game. They couldn't
- 50:22Speaker 3: protect the quarterback. They just can't protect Blackout and that's
- 50:26Speaker 3: the problem that he had. So so much of what
- 50:29Speaker 3: he was doing leading into that game was checked down
- 50:32Speaker 3: stuff and really short stuff. And then he hit a
- 50:36Speaker 3: couple of passes against the Packers, but nothing out of
- 50:39Speaker 3: the ordinary. He struggled. I mean, he did not have
- 50:41Speaker 3: a great game against the Packers at all. And you know,
- 50:45Speaker 3: going to Cincinnati now, and if they get him up
- 50:47Speaker 3: to speed and ready to play this week, he's got
- 50:50Speaker 3: better people around him to throw the football to. I mean,
- 50:53Speaker 3: those two guys are number one receivers, both of them,
- 50:57Speaker 3: and you know, Flaco didn't have anything close to that
- 51:00Speaker 3: caliber in Cleveland. So if the Bengals can protect this guy,
- 51:04Speaker 3: he can still get the ball down field accurately.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Dayne Larrabee is our guest. Do you expect the Packers
- 51:10Speaker 2: O line to be at full strength this week? And
- 51:13Speaker 2: what about wide receiver Christian Watson. They just opened up
- 51:16Speaker 2: his twenty one day window to come back from his
- 51:18Speaker 2: knee injury. Any chance the Bengals have to worry about
- 51:21Speaker 2: him this week?
- 51:23Speaker 3: Boy? You know, I got to tell you, Dan, from
- 51:26Speaker 3: what I saw a training camp, from what I've seen
- 51:28Speaker 3: at practice, and they've ramped him up a little bit
- 51:31Speaker 3: this week now that he's actually in practice, I wouldn't
- 51:36Speaker 3: count him out. But I wouldn't. My gut tells me though,
- 51:40Speaker 3: wait a week, you know, let him go through this
- 51:43Speaker 3: week and then maybe his comeback has been stunning. I
- 51:47Speaker 3: mean at training camp it looked like he could practice
- 51:50Speaker 3: and play, and you know, they held him out obviously,
- 51:53Speaker 3: and they had him on the reserve list. And now
- 51:56Speaker 3: this week the's back at practice and frankly, it looks
- 52:00Speaker 3: pretty good. To be honest with you, guys, I just
- 52:02Speaker 3: wonder if I know the Packers are very cautious with
- 52:05Speaker 3: their people from a medical standpoint, I still think it's
- 52:10Speaker 3: a long shot he plays this week, but I wouldn't
- 52:12Speaker 3: count it out.
