- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Monday.
- 0:16It is the 20th of January. So glad to have your company as
- 0:20we begin a whole brand new week. I hope your week is looking good
- 0:25today. Well, not so much in my time
- 0:27zone, but in the other side of the world's time zone.
- 0:30Today is a big day for politics in America where you get a new
- 0:33president. And I think this is probably the
- 0:38perfect little reflection of the theme of First Kings as we think
- 0:43about the shortfalls of our leaders, of our kings and
- 0:47presidents and prime ministers. That is what this book is about.
- 0:50It draws the stark comparison between the failings of our
- 0:54leaders and the glorious leadership of our God.
- 0:58Yes, our leaders do things right, but boy, they certainly
- 1:01do things wrong as well. Doesn't matter if you are
- 1:04Republican, Democrats, Liberal, Labour, Green or anywhere in
- 1:08between. Yep, our leaders struggle to get
- 1:11it right all the time. And today we are going to hear
- 1:13all about poor old Jeroboam still forging head first in the
- 1:18wrong direction and God trying to pull him back.
- 1:21But it's just not working very well.
- 1:24So friends, let us continue in the story reading together.
- 1:28First Kings chapter 14. At that time, Jeroboam's son
- 1:42Abijah became very sick. So Jeroboam told his wife,
- 1:47Disguise yourself so that no one will recognise you as my wife.
- 1:51Then go to the prophet Ahijah at Shiloh, the man who told me I
- 1:55would become king. Take him a gift of 10 loaves of
- 1:59bread, some cakes and a jar of honey and ask him what will
- 2:02happen to the boy. So Jeroboam's wife went to a
- 2:06hydra's home in Shiloh. He was an old man now and could
- 2:09no longer see. But the Lord had told the Hydra.
- 2:13Jeroboam's wife will come here pretending to be someone else.
- 2:18She will ask you about her son, for he is very sick.
- 2:22Give her the answer I give you. So when a hydra heard her
- 2:26footsteps at the door, he called out.
- 2:28Come in, wife of Jeroboam, why are you pretending to be someone
- 2:33else? Then he told her, I have bad
- 2:37news for you. Give your husband Jeroboam this
- 2:40message from the Lord the God of Israel.
- 2:44I promoted you from the ranks of the common people and made you
- 2:48ruler over my people, Israel. I ripped the Kingdom away from
- 2:53the family of David and gave it to you.
- 2:56But you have not been like my servant David, who obeyed my
- 3:00commands and followed me with all his heart and always did
- 3:03whatever I wanted. You have done more evil than all
- 3:08who live before you. You have made other gods for
- 3:11yourself and have made me furious with your gold calves.
- 3:16And since you have turned your back on me, I will bring
- 3:19disaster on your dynasty and will destroy everyone of your
- 3:24male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel.
- 3:30I will burn up your royal dynasty as one burns up trash
- 3:34until it is all gone. The members of Jeroboam's family
- 3:38who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die
- 3:42in the field will be eaten by vultures.
- 3:46I, the Lord, have spoken. Then Ahijah said to Jeroboam's
- 3:51wife. Go on home, and when you enter
- 3:55the city, the child will die. All Israel will mourn for him
- 4:00and bury him. He is the only member of your
- 4:03family who will have a proper burial, for this child is the
- 4:07only good thing that the Lord, the God of Israel sees in the
- 4:12entire family of Jeroboam. In addition, the Lord will raise
- 4:17up a king over Israel who will destroy the family of Jeroboam.
- 4:22This will happen to day even now.
- 4:25Then the Lord will shake Israel like a Reed whipped about in a
- 4:29stream. He will uproot the people of
- 4:32Israel from this good land that He gave their ancestors and will
- 4:36scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, for they have
- 4:39angered the Lord with the Asherah poles they have set up
- 4:43for worship. He will abandoned Israel because
- 4:47Jeroboam sinned and made Israel sin along with him.
- 4:52Sir Jeroboam's wife returned to Tersa and the child died just as
- 4:57she walked through the door of her home.
- 4:59And all Israel buried him and mourned for him, as the Lord had
- 5:04promised through the prophet Ahijah.
- 5:07The rest of the events in Jeroboam's reign, including all
- 5:10his wars and how he ruled, are recorded in the Book of the
- 5:14History of the Kings of Israel. Jeroboam reigned in Israel 22
- 5:20years. When Jeroboam died, his son
- 5:24Nadab became the next king. Meanwhile, Rehoboam, son of
- 5:29Solomon, was king in Judah. He was 41 years old when he
- 5:34became king, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city the
- 5:39Lord had chosen from among all the tribes of Israel as the
- 5:43place to honour his name. Rehoboam's mother was Nama, an
- 5:48Ammonite woman. During Rehoboam's reign, the
- 5:51people of Judah did what was evil in the Lord's sight,
- 5:55provoking his anger with their sin.
- 5:57For it was even worse than that of their ancestors.
- 6:00For they also built for themselves Pagan shrines and set
- 6:05up sacred pillars and asheropols on every high hill and under
- 6:09every green tree. There were even male and female
- 6:13shrine prostitutes throughout the land.
- 6:16The people imitated the detestable practises of the
- 6:20Pagan nations. The Lord had driven from the
- 6:22land ahead of the Israelites. In the fifth year of King
- 6:26Rehoboam's reign, King Shishak of Egypt came up and attacked
- 6:31Jerusalem. He ransacked the treasuries of
- 6:34the Lord's Temple and the royal palace.
- 6:36He stole everything, including all the gold Shields Solomon had
- 6:41made. King Rehoboam later replaced
- 6:44them with bronze Shields as substitutes, and he entrusted
- 6:47them to the care of the commanders of the guard who
- 6:50protected the entrance to the royal palace.
- 6:53Whenever the king went to the Temple of the Lord, the guards
- 6:56would also take the Shields and then return them to the guard
- 6:59room. The rest of the events of
- 7:02Rehoboam's reign and everything he did are recorded in the Book
- 7:06of the History of the Kings of Judah.
- 7:10There was constant war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.
- 7:14When Rehoboam died, he was buried among his ancestors in
- 7:18the city of David. His mother was Nama and Ammonite
- 7:22woman. Then his son Abajam became the
- 7:25next king. Our Lord, our perfect King, we
- 7:40once again come before you with reverence and hearts filled with
- 7:45worship and amazement at everything that you are.
- 7:49You are Creator, You are mighty God, you are King, but you are
- 7:56also merciful Saviour and trusted companion through our
- 8:00life and of course beyond through eternity.
- 8:04Oh Lord, we thank you that you have saved us and that we are
- 8:08your children and that you love us more than our human minds can
- 8:13possibly comprehend. We just set ourselves up firmly
- 8:18in your love, and we pray that whatever happens in the world
- 8:23around us, what rulers come and go, what trends push us this way
- 8:27and that, that our feet would remain firmly established on
- 8:32that foundation of your love for us.
- 8:37And so we thank you and praise you and pray all of this in the
- 8:40name of Jesus, Amen.
