Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: One day it clicked for me, man.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Where I have a son, you talked about family, I have a lovely wife, Melissa, and my son Isaac, and I want to be there for his future.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: You know, I want to be present.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: And it starts with me, right?
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: It was more of a health journey for me, man.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: You know, like I I was what 265 pounds, and um, I didn't have like the motivation to do anything, and I thought I could lose weight quick at any moment, you know.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Hello, hello, welcome to the People Run Podcast.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Now, to start this episode off, have you ever told yourself you're never gonna run?
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: You're never gonna do a marathon.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: I don't know how people do this.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: If that sounds like you, that's exactly how this guest who I have on today is like uh a good friend of mine, Ozzy, out of Florida.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: And uh he once told me he's never gonna run, never gonna do a marathon.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: And just a few months ago, we did a marathon, and which is the reason I wanted to have him on.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Thanks, Ozzie, for jumping on.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: As you now know, this is the People Run Podcast, um, where we short share everyday runner stories, you know, talk about how you get it done and um whether you got a family, kids, your doctor, student, night shift, day shift.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: These are the people we want to interview.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: So, Ozzie, welcome to the People Run Podcast.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Thank you for jumping on.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: What's up, man?
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: First off, how you doing?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: What a setup, right?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I had to because you were on here.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I I can't believe the the journey, right?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: The fact that I did tell you that, and it hurts you being right right now, but the fact is it's a growth moment for me, you know?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah it's a growth moment where I'll never say never.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's that's a fact right there, you know.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: So I can say that when this when this started, it was more of a health journey for me, man.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: You know, like I I was what 265 pounds, and um, I didn't have like the motivation to do anything, and I thought I could lose weight quick at any moment, you know.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Um, I gotta give a shout-out to my boy, though.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: His name's Milo for a moment here.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, we would hang out, and every now and then he would tell me, man, just get out of it, do something, do something.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And um I'm like, Yeah, cool, sure.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know what they say, you you won't change, you can't change an ass in one, it has to come from you, you know.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Um, and I don't know, one day it clicked for me, man.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Where I have a son, you talked about family, I have a lovely wife, Melissa, and my son Isaac, and I want to be there for his future.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: You know, I want to be present, and it starts with me, right?
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: So I gotta be able to take care of myself to be able to take care of others.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And Milo's theory was 10 minutes.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: 10 minutes.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: He says it takes longer for you to think about putting on your shoes and da-da-da, than to actually go out there and just give it 10 minutes.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So the joke is that I started with 10 and I ended up with five hours in a marathon, you know.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So to do something like that, I never thought, you know, I was obviously capable of, but um, yeah, man.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I can can't say it again.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Never, never close-mind yourself to think that you're not capable of something that uh if you put effort to you can't do, you know.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And a big part of that too is for you, man.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Look, I mean, look, look where we're at right now, man.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You got your podcast right now, you know.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I gotta give you, like, you know, congratulations, man.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: How does this feel for you right now?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And look at this.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: You you got a podcast, you got a couple of episodes in.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Like, what's on your mind, man, for a moment?
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Nah, man.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, well, one, I'm happy to hear the story.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: See, I didn't know the 10-minute part, which uh kudos to Milo.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Um, for those of us, I know Milo as well.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: And uh, yeah, that's a that's a perfect way to get out there is you know, start small.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: I tell people all the time.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, even in my weight loss journey, it wasn't like, you know, you go out there and bust out three, four miles, or you go in the gym and lift heavy weights.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: It's you just gotta show up.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: And if you make it easy on yourself, you'll continue to the next day.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and that's what it's all about, man.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Getting it in consistently day in and day out.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Um, as far as how I feel, man, uh, this is wild.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: I never thought I would make a podcast or or be recording or any of that stuff, but it it's it's funny.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and I'm sure we'll get into this where running takes you.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: You know, running is uh to me, I'm very grateful for running.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: Running helps you travel, run, improve mentally.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, and and here I am recording a podcast.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Um, it's one of those things.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: It came to me on a run.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Funny enough, it was just like, man, uh it'd be kind of cool to record a podcast, but instead of interviewing um elites or like uh top people in the industry, the everyday runner.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: And for some reason I was thinking of uh, I think at the time I saw on social media there was a mom who had just BQ'd, which is like one of the hardest races Boston qualifier to get into.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: And she was like a mom of two kids and had to take them to school in the morning.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: I'm like, how is she running 70 miles per hour?
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: I was like, man, that'd be dope to share that story, and that's not the stuff we see on social media.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: So, like, a couple episodes in now, and then this will be dropping soon.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Um, it's it's getting real and exciting, and you know, we'll see how uh people react to it, man.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: But um just doing it for the passion, the love, and having fun with it.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, there's some growth that comes from podcasts as well.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: So here we are, man.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: And um, with that said, man, I want to rewind a little bit.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Uh tell me what life was like pre-running, like what was food like, what was active like, you know, what what was even family like pre-running?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I feel like uh I would wake up a lot later, even though I have uh a son, you know, you wake up in the morning by default early, right?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: But I realized that uh that that had to change at one point if I was gonna take on this running.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: But pre-running, man, my lifestyle was crazy.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Man, I I went out and yeah, I'll probably drink on a Thursday, maybe on a Friday, maybe even on a Saturday, you know.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Um I would go out, you know.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Um, you add that to the bad eating habits, you know, that lifestyle may be fun, but it's not sustainable, you know.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And so again, it took time for me to realize that I had to make a change.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And um maybe, you know, maybe if I had to attest or tie it to a reasoning, you know, my brother suffered a stroke, you know.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And so maybe that was something that triggered me to make the change unnoyingly, you know, um, or unconsciously.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And and uh, you know, maybe that's something that I can reflect on now and say that, you know, it's something that maybe maybe turn the light switch on and do that.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Um, but I thought life was good at that point.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Let's be honest, man.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, I can eat whatever I want, do whatever I want, wake up at whatever time I want on the weekends.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, on the weekends, my time.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: I want to wake up at eight, I'm sorry, at 10 or whatever the case was, I can do that.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and uh I realized that like I said, it wasn't sustainable, man.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: You know, and the good thing is that like, you know, your family's gonna love you, right?
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: My wife's gonna love me no matter what, you know, regardless, yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my son's gonna love me no matter what.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And so you think life is fine, but but it's really not, you know, because you're you're doing damage to yourself, you know, by by doing the habits that I was doing, you know, and um and I needed to do the change, man.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: I needed to do the change.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Man, that's awesome.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: What what was family's reaction, you know, when you you started running, you know, you're doing the 10 minutes, you're getting consistent, you go from drinking and going out more consistently to like, whoa, dad and and husband's running a little bit more consistently and the family's seeing it.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Like, what was that like?
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: And also, you run in Miami, so tell us about the adjustment to the heat and just getting active.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: So the wife's always been supportive of running the 10 minutes.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, let's be real, I can run for 10 minutes and still do the things that I told you about.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I can go out and have a drink, go ahead and do this, still wake up late.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: What I realized is that something you mentioned, how you thought about this podcast is when I started running the 10 minutes, yeah, is that I found myself free out there.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Like I felt I could, you know, just clear my mind, you know.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And I noticed that I would make these little runs longer because I started not focusing on my run, I started focusing on other things, you know.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: It's funny when you start running, you think you put music on and that's the way you want to roll, and yeah, I'm gonna listen to like music.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can do that.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: But I realized that I needed to slow that down and turn that into a podcast or whatever the case was with more time added.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh there's no better fee, or one thing that added to me as a feeling that I loved was I would be at work from 9 to about 12.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe I had a bad morning at work, it was rough.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: But working from home, I had the flexibility where I can literally go outside, put or put my shoes on, go outside and go for a run.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And then when I came back, whatever problem I had either became smaller or I had a solution that I thought about while I was running.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: So I realized that I am uh clearing my mind, I am I'm doing good work while I'm out there, you know?
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And uh it's funny how it just frees up things, you know.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Like you may be just stuck because you're looking at it from one perspective, but while I'm running, I'm just I'm I'm looking from different angles and um how to uh solve whatever whatever issue I may be thinking about or something like that.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: So uh but yeah, the wife's been supportive.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Isaac, Isaac, uh Isaac laughs all the time when I just go and run because you know he's like, you know, initially it was just a short period, but now it's like I could be gone for like hours, you know?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: So uh but the good thing is I've adjusted.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: I I I I tend to more run more in the morning now, you know.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: I think that's the best thing, right?
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Like you gotta move, you gotta do the hardest thing first in the day.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: That's like that's the only way.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I hate running at night.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: I dislike it, but if I have to do it, I'll do it, you know?
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Um because I feel like the day already had me.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: I already, you know, I probably ate already, and like I'm just like, uh I love running fasted.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: That's like one thing that to me is I feel lighter, I feel, you know, just greater than it's like.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fasted, yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Man, okay.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And and the I don't know, man, like the if I do it in the morning, I set myself up for the rest of my day.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Like the endorphins or whatever dopamine I get from there, like it's all it's all up from there.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: I show up to work ready with action, like I can see it in my own productivity at work, you know.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: If I work out, I see better results, you know.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Um, or how I approach things, I'm more positive, you know.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: So now it went from running to health to like a lifestyle, you know, because I'm starting to realize the benefits off of it.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: My wife started loving the fact that um I'm dedicating more time to myself and working on myself, but I started realizing that if I wanted to keep this going, I needed to set a goal, you know?
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: And so that's where the race came into play, you know, because I understand now.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: I understand why the race is necessary.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: It's kind of to help you stay focused, to put in the work and it think about it.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: If I'm training for something, now I can't be going on a Thursday, I can't be going on a Friday because I gotta run Saturday morning, because I gotta recover on a Sunday, you know.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So there was um there was a lot of um a lot of sacrifices that I had to do to get that stuff back, but now, now in hindsight, like it's it's easy, you know, like it's easy to be able to put that aside and put you know my health, you know, my goals now, which is you know um running uh another marathon that I have coming up with you in November, by the way.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we'll get to that.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: What I want to ask you, right?
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: So one, I'm happy for you, man, because it sounds like a lot of stuff is like falling into place and is consistent and you got it organized, but how how are you getting that organized?
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: So you walk me through like your day, and obviously you don't have to say where you work, just kind of like what you do.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: You wake up, you run, you know, you run fasted, which is whole crazy another thing in my but there there are some benefits too.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Then you go to work roughly what time you spend time with the family when, you know, that kind of stuff.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: What's your sleep like, etc.?
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I'm gonna I'm gonna say that you know, it's funny.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: I have you know the Apple Watch, and on the Apple Watch, it'll I have a reminder to go to sleep, or it tells me it's bedtime, you know.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: 10 30 is usually when I try to knock out, you know.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: So I'll be in bed at 10.30.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Um, I'll wake up at 6, 6.30, depending if I'm snoozing that day.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: But the goal, minimal goal is two miles.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: And I'll explain why two miles is important.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: But two miles, I don't care.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: I need to get two miles in somehow, you know?
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: And then I'll level that up to 2.5 or whatever the case is.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: But two miles is like, I have to do it.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: That's like that's my 10 minutes now.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, two miles.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Uh minimum, I have to get that done.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: So I'll knock that out in the morning from you know 6:30 uh to you know, whatever, seven.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: I can knock out three or close to three miles in that time frame.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Um, I come back, um, I spend some time with Isaac before he goes to school.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: We get like about 15 minutes there that we can do that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I get ready, go to work.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: I work in a um in a sales environment.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: So I need to be anth up.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I need to be ready to go.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: I'm also a people person.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: I'm very social.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I need to get that, get that going and be able to effectively communicate to my clients and also amongst my peers, you know.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: So I'm doing that from like nine to five.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: My my job can take me, you know, I want to say, what, 20, 30 miles one way, or I could be at home, you know.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: It depends on how I plan my day out.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Um, there's times though that look, man, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I did I didn't wake up on time, man.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: I just I moved all the way to seven or whatever the case was.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: And so this is one thing that I I have to earn my my whatever it is.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: So like before I play Madden, let's say, before I do Netflix, before I do anything, I have to earn my my whatever it is, my vice, you know.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: So I'll have to go and run.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: That's like like your free time, playtime, you know, your enjoyment, you know, like kind of like the cake or cheat meal, or in this case Netflix, you know, Madden.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I have to run before I do that, and then I I earn that run, then I earned that that time of Netflix or whatever.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, someone once told me that, you know, they set me up, you know.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: The same for me, like, hey, so what what series are you watching or whatever?
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Yeah, he's like, you know, with all that time that you spent on the series, you could have, you know, definitely spent 10 minutes.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Nothing like peer pressure from the boys.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: I gotta get it respect.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: He never gave up, you know, because you can easily be like, man, like, you know, he doesn't want to listen, you know.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: So I I respect that.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Um then also like the support, you just said it, support is big, man.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, the chat, the chat that we have where we can all chime in, you know, and check ourselves.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: You know, there's days where you know that thing is super active, everyone's just posting nonstop.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: And and you see that and you're like, why am I not out there right now?
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Why am I not running right now, you know?
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Or it's a ghost town, and and you you gotta be the spark for that group.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: You're the one that starts it up, you know.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: So I think having that environment where we're promoting it, where we're all um you know, pushing each other, you know, it's like, hey, you ran one mile, and obviously we can go goggins and say, oh I did a mile, but you know the what we put out there is hey man, you got up and you did the work.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, you didn't have to, you could have chosen not to, but you at least took the initiative, you know?
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: And so that right there helps you build confidence, and next thing you know, you're just you know you're stacking up those miles.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Um uh so that's that's something that how my day would look like, and I'm sure we ventured off here a little bit.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: No, you good, man.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: This this is what it's all about, man.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Um I'm appreciative you shared, man.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: And funny enough, I did want to get into like support, and and we've kind of spoken to that.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Like for those listening, real quick, we we have this chat.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: I can't remember exactly because it's been a few years now, but um, I used to live in Florida as well, and that's how I know Ozzy.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: We've known each other eight, nine years at this point.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: It's been a while, my boy.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: But um when I left Florida, I had just started running when I was in Florida and I was in Seattle for a bit, and somehow I think I was posting my runs or something, and and Ozzy hits me up one day and he's like, Yo, I started running, and I'm like, Whoa, really?
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: And he throws me in this chat, and in this chat, I get this history of chatting.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: There's a whole bunch of people running and getting in.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: And what I love about it is that um we're all different types of runners there.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Some are faster, some are just getting into it, some are just I'm gonna run a half every other season, you know.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: But we all like show up and support each other, and that's what he's talking about.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Well, like there'll be a chat and someone will post a picture.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: I did eight miles, I did one, and we'll joke around, but like, you know, for those listening, it's it's good to have support people.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: And what I want to ask you is, man, because I know the context, but for those listening, you know, tell me about like your running, your training.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Um, do you run solo often?
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Do you run with people?
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Um, that kind of stuff.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, look, man, I think this is my area of opportunity.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: I am the type to just get put my shoes on and just go, man.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Like, I told you my my goal is minimum two miles and just keep going from there.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: The most discipline I've ever had is when you set up a plan for me, actually.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: You know, I think that was that's something that I needed.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: I needed a little bit of structure to get me going.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: The good thing is that you taught me enough where now I can kind of do it on my own.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: And so I try um, you know, to get get anywhere between, you know, 20 miles a week is what I'm looking to do.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And the idea is Monday through Friday, I'm doing, you know, maybe um, you know, eight miles, and then I'm finishing it off or capping it off, you know, maybe on a uh a Saturday with 10 or 12, depending on what I ended up doing throughout the week.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Uh obviously the uh that can change, that can fluctuate.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Man, sometimes you know you'll do more, sometimes you'll do less.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: If you're training for obviously a marathon, you gotta amp that up big time.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: The speed workouts is one thing that I I never incorporated or strength training.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: I did not incorporate at all.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: You know, I definitely felt that a little bit, but it's possible you can do without it, you know, because yeah, you didn't do it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, you're cutting yourself short if you're not doing it.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: I've learned that.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: And I've learned it so much so that I turned my garage into a gym now.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: So I have no excuse of me having to give get my behind to a gym and sign up for membership.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I brought the gym to me, you know.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And so um I have no excuse, you know.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: It could take it could be 10 minutes.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Go 10 minutes, go do some resistance bands, go do some something, uh, you know, just just have a base when it comes to uh you know strength training, which is something I I realized that I could have definitely benefited from it in previous runs.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: No, it definitely helps, you know, it'll help you get in shape and now you have it at home.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, Ozzy has a cool gym for sure, from what I've seen from when he showed me, but um, you know, as runners, we don't need to bodybuild or anything like that, which funny enough I spent years on, but like for running, you know, you get it in consistently a few times a week, good enough.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's it's interesting, uh, the whole theory about it because you're thinking, I mean, I again I didn't do the science behind it, but I'm just thinking, man, just run.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Just keep running, keep running, keep running.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: And you know, but the truth is you need to get them strength, get the get get some strength in those legs, you know.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And um it'll it'll make things a lot more easier for you when you when you have to you know be on the 20th mile or 20-something mile.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, there was all types of things.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: I I'm just thinking about the shoulder pain.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: I don't even know.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: I never had shoulder pain, and and I got shoulder.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: I don't even paint that day.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know what was going on, but I started feeling all types of pains that day.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Well, things that have never been.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Talking about that, let's get into races, right?
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: Before we get into the marathon, uh, you didn't start at a full marathon, so like where'd you start from?
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: You know, what was your experience like with races?
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: What made you even get into races?
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Because you used to tell us I'm not racing, I'm just doing it for fun.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I think uh I think the whole theory behind the race was just improved lifestyle, right?
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Because if I have something that I have to work to, I'm competitive, man.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: I just told you I'm gonna say I want to do good.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to do better at running, you know, and and I I wanted to prove to myself that I am capable of maybe starting with a half marathon.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: So that was my first official race, I want to say, and that was interesting.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Um I'm talking about it was uh in uh I don't rata, so it's in the keys.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, we're talking about phenomenal views, yeah, right under the sun, and this is where like doing your research comes a long way.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: So obviously, you know, I got no hair to cover me here, but I decided to, you know, run this race, and I wasn't prepared properly from maybe a hydration standpoint or a plan for hydration and also protect my skin, protect, you know, overall my body while I was out there.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And it was a tough race, everything was going fine for me.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: And then towards the end, I hit a wall, and I remember what got me through, what got me through was MM till I collapsed.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: I literally had that replay for the last three miles, and I collapsed at the end.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I literally did, I literally did.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: I I collapsed and I I fainted, you know.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Um and I was like, yeah, they had the medics on me and everything, you know.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: And so that was uh first off, you know, you could see it as a moment of weakness, but I just saw it as a moment of strength that I wasn't I wasn't stopping.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: I'm not I'm not gonna like Goggins says, you know, don't stop when because you're tired, you know, stop when you're done.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: When you're done, yeah.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: I made sure that I finished the race, got my medal, and then I collapsed.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: So that was uh definitely a learning moment for me.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: I realized that I didn't hydrate enough uh through the race, so I had my first gel or my first sip halfway through.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Oh wow I don't know what I was thinking, and I think it's when I was training, I was doing it that way.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know why, but I was also training in a different element.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: I was training in covered trees.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Uh in this island rotter race was on a bridge, no shade.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: 13 miles.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Like, no shade.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: I want to get some specifics here.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: So, like, you got your first half, you sign up for it.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: One, what was the conditions like of the race?
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: You already told me how to sunny, it was hot.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, this is uh is another part too.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: This is where I guess the the fasted part is not good, but the race I didn't get to stay in Island Rada that night, which is another lesson that I had to learn.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: So I drove or we drove here with a couple buddies of mine.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: I want to say two.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: And a half hours.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: So the race, let's say the race starts at seven.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: We had to leave our house by four, waking up maybe at three.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: So from three to seven, nothing as far as you know, maybe you add water or something like that, you know.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: And so um uh that's that's kind of how I set myself up for a tough race, you know.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Everything was going good, man.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: The engine lights did not come on till like I want to say like the 10th mile, and that's when things started deteriorating fast, you know.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: But uh, and I think also another thing too is you know the the emotions are there.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Like I I started like I felt like invincible for a little bit.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: I was just running fast.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I was it felt comfortable, it felt good.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's where you gotta be a little disciplined and understand that you know it's not a race, it's a marathon.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Or it's half a marathon in this case, you know.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Um, but it was uh I think I had to go through that moment, Fitz.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Um think about it, that happened in January, and then in December, I signed that so that January finished the race, and I want to say like a month later, I signed up for a full marathon.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: So think about it.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Look at the ignorance.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: I pretty much I told you I I fainted at the end to signing up me having the audacity to think that I can in 11 months later run a full marathon and be fine.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Was there any uh you know that's gotta be crazy.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: You finish your first half, you you you you till you collapse, you got medics on you on the first one.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: What it speaks to your mental fortitude and all that, but what made you go like, I'm not done with racing, I want to do some more.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: And you know what?
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna sign for a full right after this, even though it's almost a year out.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, some people go, I'm gonna take a break, or I'm gonna do a 5k, 10k.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: You know, what what made you or allowed you to go, you know what, I'm gonna keep going with this?
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I wasn't happy with my performance.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: That uh that that felt to me like I left a lot on the table and I wanted to get what was mine and I wanted to just do better, man.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: And so that, and then also I realized that now that I did my half, do I go back to my lifestyle?
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Or like, you know, hey, I don't have to have a race anymore, so I can just do what I gotta do.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: So at this point, it's kind of like uh, you know, keep me structured and keep me in place, you know, instead of having to maybe resol to doing something that I was doing in the past, whether it was, you know, dedicating to my health.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: And again, I can I should be able to do that on my own, but I think the race is something that I need right now to keep me going and keep me on pace, you know, for um for a better lifestyle.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: So from there you went from the half.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Um, did you do any we'll get to the full here in a minute, but did you do any other races in between January to December?
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, I might have done like a corporate run, which is a corporate 5K, right?
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: You know, on that one I got uh it's funny because for a while I struggled looking at I wanted to be faster.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: That was just my goal.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Like I want to be faster, faster, faster.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: And I feel like uh, you know, they say that, you know, they say basically that uh comparison is a thief of joy, you know, and I was trying to compare myself with others.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: I want to be fast like them, but that's not my journey, man.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: That's just not, you know, yeah.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: And instead of me focusing on that, I should and focus on what I have, take inventory of what I've done, take inventory of what I'm doing.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: And uh to me, it's it's uh when I started thinking that way, I'm like, yeah, man, I'll I'll do my I'll do my mile in 11 minutes, that's fine.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: I'll do my mile in 12 minutes if I have to, that's fine, you know.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't mean that I can't adapt and change, and obviously with the right training, you know, that drops, you know.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: But once I understood that, you know, that in zone two are like you know, to the bright lights, you know what I mean?
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Um because at that point uh uh it was easier for me, you know.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Um and it's it's wild what zone two can do.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Like that.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Like you know, I can be there for hours as long as I know that you know I'm at 145.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man, there's uh that's a lesson that most people tend to learn late or later, not someone who just started a year, year and a half ago.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: It's it's one I've even had to like face.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: Like we can all be fast.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: I'm a big believer, maybe too optimist for that, but we can all get fast.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: But the journey is different for everyone, you know.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: Someone might start slower, someone might start really fast, you know.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Fast runners burn out sometimes, fast runners go all on time, uh, slower runners go from slow to fast.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: You know, we see it all online all the time.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: There's always some person who goes from like the underdog all the way to like super fast.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: So um, kudos to you for learning that lesson early, man.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, let's let's get into it right from there.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: So then you you train, right?
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: Well, you sign up for the full, and now you're gonna train for it.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: So, for all those listening, share.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: Actually, I want to backtrack a bit.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: What time did you do at the half, and then what was the name of the full you signed up for?
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: The uh man, I should have had this information.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: It's all good.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: I don't know my time right now for the half.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: I could probably look it up and roughly yeah, man.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: I have no clue, man.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: I really don't worry.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: I really don't.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: How about this?
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Uh for sure.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: I think I did about 12 and a half per month.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: So whatever that's really.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair enough.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: And the one that we signed up was for Garden of Life in uh West Palm Beach, I think it was.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, West Palm Beach, yeah.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: West Palm Beach, yeah.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, so we signed up for that race, and uh, you know, I I realized that you know this this day was coming, and then you know, man, I think I think if you didn't step in and uh applied your your assistance, because uh, you know, you you were striving to um you know follow some goals and becoming a coach.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: And at that point, you know, you wanted to challenge yourself and see if you can help others, you know, complete their goals.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: And um, yeah, man, you you came in clutch, you you created a plan for me based on my journey, which is very important, and um, and yeah, you set up a plan, and that's something that I'm good at.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, you tell me what to do, I'm gonna do it, you know.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: So that that made it easy for me.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: I think what also makes it easy is um that Milo is also in that marathon.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: And so I would literally religiously on Saturdays, we're running together no matter what, you know, um, and we would find ways to make it happen.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: But that's not everything, you know.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: There's days that you're gonna have to do it by yourself, you know, and there were several days that I did it by myself.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: And one thing that most people don't really understand, uh, you know, maybe you'll post that you just completed a marathon, you know.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: But what everybody doesn't see is the last 12 months or the 11 months of you waking up at six in the morning, crack at dawn, while everyone's getting back from a party.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: I'm about to start my running party, you know.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: So it's they don't see that, you know, they don't see the hours that are put in, the sweats that's put in, you know, the falls, the the bloopers while you're out there, you know, the um all that stuff that happens.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: And the and and it feels good once you do it, but it's not easy, you know.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: It's not easy um all that work that's done.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: And a lot of people, you know, I wonder why is this person so good at this?
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Why is this person so good at that?
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Well, it's because they they they do it behind the scenes, you know.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, Steph Curry, doesn't he shoot like thousands of shots or like a thousand shots a day or something like that?
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Some crazy number.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Crazy number, yeah.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: And that's why he can make those shots look easy in game time because he's putting those shots up consistently at practice, you know.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: So I think that's uh that's something that you know can be said enough.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: You know, the work's gonna show through the work that you put through.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: So yeah, the training was was brutal, but it was awesome.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: I loved it, man.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: You know, I think I learned a lot too.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: These long runs helped me out better myself in many ways.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: I started listening to self-help podcasts, you know, Mel Robbins, Jay Shetty, like a bunch of bunch of podcasts that really helped me um with self-growth, man.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, you can't stop learning.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: If you don't learn, you're probably dead.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: So I appreciate that time out there, and and um, I still do, you know.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: That's one thing that I can go out there and and like I said, I can clear my mind, I can work on myself, I can find solutions.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Well right.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: So you you mentioned Jay Shetty, you know, Mel Robbins and a few other uh, you know, speakers and motivational people.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, are they the ones who inspire you?
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Like who's some of your main inspirations and stuff you like?
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: Books, audio, whatever it is that keep you going and running, or even life journey as this.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think uh I think uh Jay Shetty is a big one, man.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: I like Jay Shetty a lot.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: He's uh he has that that that mentality, you know, where you know you gotta peel back the layers and really understand life, man.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: Like uh there's a reason behind every decision, and every day there's tons of decisions, you know?
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: And the decision that I made of 10 minutes per day to run or whatever the case it was shaped me to run a marathon.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: You know, and also facing your fears, man.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: There's times where you know the person that that said I can't run a race or I won't do a race was the weaker version of me, you know?
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: And that's that's the David Goggins side, you know, like you need both.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: You need that little, you know, motivator that got you here, but you also need that tough love, and that's where Goggins comes in, you know.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: That's when you sit, you see in the memes, you sit down, you know, you you've taken a rest day, you open your phone, and Goggins is like, so you want to be more taking a rest day?
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: That's what you want to be.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, it's I don't want to have a victim mentality, man.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I don't want to have that.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: I want I you know, it's because what I do that's why things get done.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: So um, yeah, man.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: So Jay Shea is a big one.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: I like Mel Robbins, she's good.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Um, Goggins is great.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Um man, I also who says you can't have fun while you're out there too.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Theo Vaughn got me through so many runs.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, his stories are wild, they're entertaining, I love them.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: You know, I uh uh Rogan podcast is amazing because it's like three hours long, so I can literally do the whole thing, you know, when I'm running.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: But yeah, you gotta balance it out too, man.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: I it's not only that that, but I also usually the last couple of miles I'll try to amp up and put some music on there, you know.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: I can go from regetong, I can do hip hop, I can do metal, I can do a little bit of everything to get me through.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: So it's a mixture, man.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: You know, it's a mixture depending on the mood I'm in or what I'm trying to accomplish or what I'm trying to work on, I'll seek it out.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: So talking about three hour runs, right?
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Let's let's get into this marathon, right?
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Because you you mentioned some of the motivation for those long runs, you know.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: So those alluding, um, Ozzy had signed up for the full, and then somewhere around like 12, 16 weeks out, um, I had just gotten certified to become a coach.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: And and I put in the chat, I'm like, hey, I know you guys got a race coming up, you know.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: Like if you guys are down, uh I'm down to coach you guys.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: I wanted to get the experience of coaching people and and also, like you said, kind of challenged.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Let me get these guys to the finish line.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: I was pretty confident I can.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: But what I want to get to is right, so we started training and whatnot.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: Let's start with the training.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Like, what did you find most difficult?
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: You know, you you said some of it, but like uh, what did you find most difficult?
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Was it the long run?
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: Also, kudos to you, man.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: I can't do what you do.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: You he runs in Miami, it's super hot.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: This was middle of the summer, it's super humid.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: So just getting through that, yeah.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Let's start with the training first.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: What did you find most difficult and what was that like?
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Man, I think what helped me out for the training, obviously, all training is gonna be difficult, but what really helped me out is that I didn't just start training.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I kept myself active from January till when we started around June.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: So when we started picking up, I was I was already running 10 miles, you know.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: I was already, you know, in that in that flow.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: So I think that really helped.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: I something to take away is if you want it to be consistent, make it a lifestyle.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Think that it's only a training block for um for a marathon, you know, do it where you're running every week, you're just doing it just to maintain base, let's say.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Uh so that was something that really helped me out.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: If I didn't, and I'm starting kind of from scratch again in June, it would have been a tougher task.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: There was some runs, man.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: You walk out, you start running, and by mile three, I don't know how I'm gonna complete seven more miles if I'm doing 10 miles.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: I just don't see it.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: It's not in the cards today, it's not gonna happen.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: We're done here, you know.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: And and you gotta push through, man.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: And then I ask myself, and you want to do 26?
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: 26.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: You can't even get to four right now, you know?
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: And I and I probably just did that last like last week without a problem.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: But that goes to show you, man, days are different, man.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: Some days are gonna be great, you're gonna flow, you're gonna you're just gonna break records, and then the other days you're just you hit a wall, man.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: And and I think those are the days that you don't give up, those are the days that you dig deep and you keep going, because those are the days that prepare you for that wall in the 20s, you know?
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: And and you're gonna hit that fucking wall.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: You're you're gonna be able to do that.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: So talking about walls, right?
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: We started this race, so I flew out for everyone listening to this race because it was uh Ozzie and a couple other friends of ours, and also I was coaching a few of them, but I was like, man, I want to surprise these guys and fly out, right?
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: So we get to this race, and this is what I'm talking about and alluding to a walls.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: So we get to this race and we start with a wall.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Ozzie, if you want to share what was the start of the race like uh for this full marathon in West Palm Beach, you know, conditions, you know what I mean.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh, we already talked about my half marathon experience, right?
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I'm over here trying to keep composure and don't get ahead of myself, you know, control myself.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: And and God is like, let me bless you with some rain.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: And God gave us not only rain, but give us some monsoon right away.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: And if that wasn't enough, you know, there was wind.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Like we're talking about 20 miles per hour winds.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: That's what was uh the forecast that day, you know, and that was uh that was humbling, you know, because you know, but I I will say maybe that was a distraction for me, Fitz.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Like, because it started raining, because it's my focus is no longer like, you know, I'm just there like, man, like I'm worried about the rain, I'm worried about this, and like, you know, maybe that that it might have been uh a blessing in disguise, you know, because my mind wasn't thinking about the 26th.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: Now I'm thinking about man, I'm here wet, I gotta stick myself dry and this and that.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: But um, but yes, uh, you know, fitz comes out here, you know, um, from the beautiful mountains of Colorado, you know, to the to the hurricane force winds that were out here.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, it was it was bad, man.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: It was uh right before, like literally, I want to say 15 minutes before the race, we're all waiting in line and and there's massive amounts of rain on top of us, you know.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: And they said it's gonna stop before the race, and it didn't, you know.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Um it it I want to say, you know, maybe 10 minutes into the race, I feel like it kind of started dissipating.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna lie, man.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: I was at that start line, and you know, it's it's I'm there and I'm happy to be there, and I'm like, okay, you guys are on this race, and you know, I've been coaching you guys, and then it's like the weather's supposedly gonna be 60 something, high 60s, which for those that live in Miami is not too bad considering it always gets to 80, and then in comes this rain, I gotta pull my jacket out, it's cold, then it starts pouring tsunami-like, and I'm here like, oh, I feel scared for these boys right now.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: I'm like, uh, we've been coaching, but we weren't coaching for this.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Well, that that's uh that's a good point though.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: There it's um there was days that it rained when I was training, you know, and I didn't think it was gonna rain that day for the for the race.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: Neither do we, yeah.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: No one did.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: However, though, you know, that prepares me.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: I know what it feels like to run with wet socks.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: I know what it feels like to run and hit a puddle.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: I know what it feels like to be in wet clothes, you know.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: Obviously the sweat, but I'm talking about, you know, before you even run, you're already wet, you know.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: So I think that um that's another part of going and running.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we make excuses because you know the weather's not looking so great today.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: The weather's not this.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, find a treadmill.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: If you don't have a treadmill, go outside because that's gonna prepare you for the element that you may be facing, you know, it's just how it works, you know.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: So believe it or not, I think that that's something else that I that probably helped me out in that process.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: Like, okay, I've been here before, I've I felt this, I know what this feels like, you know.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: And so um, yeah, man, it was raining and the wind, you know, the wind was good, was there, and all of a sudden, of course, now the sun comes out, you know?
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: And um, yeah, all that adds up, you know.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: Um there was uh there was there was uh I don't know, I I think the the most brutal thing was the winds at times because you're running and it's just you're fighting that, man.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: You're fighting that.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: That was it felt like I was uh you know, it wasn't working in my favor.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what walk me through that.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: So like for those listening, it started with rain, the rain went away, then it got hot.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: And if those of you who've ever been to Florida, you know hot means humid.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: But they also had wind, and and this was like one of the worst marathon conditions I've ever seen in a race.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: You got you know, torrential downpour at the beginning, you got heat, you got humidity, then you got headwinds, and it's the whole course the whole course is a loop.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: So you're circling back the same areas with the same wind and same heat.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: What was going through your mind, you know, during that through the race for the first half and then and beyond, like what kept you going?
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man, look, I I was pretty impressed with myself uh starting this race.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: Obviously, I learned my lesson the first time around.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: I was hydrating all the way through.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: You know, this was my first or second official race, you know, that with distance.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: And so I still hadn't really narrowed down my water practices, meaning, you know, I've seen the videos and what to do, and but I I didn't want to uh, you know, deviate too much from what I know.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, it went from me just using my water bottles to then I'm grabbing water, I'm I'm refilling my water, you know, like I was doing a bunch of that stuff.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: But yeah, the most important thing for me, I wanted to make sure I stayed hydrated from the beginning.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: I I was hydrating the night before, I was hydrating hours before the race or an hour before the race.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: Hydration was not going to be a problem this time around, you know.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: I wanted to make sure that was uh addressed.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: I had enough gels to feed, you know, families, you know.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: I was ready for that.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: And my goal was every 30 minutes I'm I'm I'm doing a gel.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: I did one five minutes before.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: The gel of my choice is uh actually I have one here.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: I just use a goo.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: And you know, everyone has different preferences.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: That to me is just easy, it's my go-to.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: And every 30 minutes I'll do one of those.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: I'm having a swig of water every time I have one of those.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: I have electrolytes.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: I'm I had two 10-ounce bottles, one with electrolytes, one with just plain water.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: Um, that's how I did my training.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I noticed some people would have two electrolytes.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: I need to have water just for my like taste.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: I don't know, it it helps me out.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I felt good.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: Um, I hit uh the half mark, and at the half mark, you you know, well actually I think we have seen you before the half mark.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, but we were rolling.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: One thing I was really concerned, but it didn't happen um was you know the restroom situation.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Um for those starting out, you know, pooping is real when it comes to marathon, you know, or running.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: Um, but then this time around, man, I I had no issues with that whatsoever.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: It wasn't even on my mind.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: I don't even know how that happened.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was the rain, the distractions that kept me from you know, thinking about stuff.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: But um, so the bathroom wasn't a concern anymore.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I'm just running, man.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm doing my thing, I'm watching my pace.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: I'm not I'm not going faster than I can.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm conserving my energy, I'm making sure that I'm just doing doing what I have to do.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: You know, obviously I wanted to do a goal of of five or four and a half to five my uh hours.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I I didn't get to achieve that, but um, you know, I uh I I I I at one point I didn't think I was gonna finish the race.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: So the fact that I did finish the race was it's good enough for me.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Um and so uh everything is going good, man.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: I think at one point there was no engine lights uh till around the 16th mile, man.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: I think I saw you, you were very supportive, by the way.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Uh Fitz, there was four, I how many of us was it?
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: Four of us probably running?
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it was four of us running.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, four, because there's people doing the half as well.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was four of us running, and Fitz was just doing checks, man.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, this guy was like a ninja.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: He was coming out of the bushes, you know?
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Like, hey, I got you.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: What do you need?
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, what's going on?
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, I appreciated that.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: He was a supporter.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: Um, it's good to see a familiar face because you know when you're running, everyone's different speeds, you know.
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: And you're out there alone, yeah.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Your friend may be ahead, your friend may be behind.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: And it's good to see Fitz come out of nowhere, you know.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: He was also a photographer, man.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, he he was out there taking pictures of us, videos of us, so we definitely appreciated that.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: And we got to the halfway mark.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: And one thing I gotta say, Fitz, I don't like loops.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't want to do loops anymore.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: So I prefer one, take me from point A to point B, man.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: I don't want to go back to point A, you know.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: So, but you know, it is what it is.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, we did the we got the halfway mark, you met me there, you looked at my water, and you're like, man, drink more water.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: And uh and you know, I just turned it.
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: Like 80 degrees by that point or something.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: So it was hot by that point.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was getting hot.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: That's the other thing too.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: Maybe you know, you're you gotta anticipate, right?
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: You can't take it when you're you're you're dead already.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: You gotta you gotta be ahead of the curve here.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: And and you're right, it was getting hotter and it was only gonna get even worse.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: So I want to say the first thing that I started feeling was I started feeling this weird sensation in my shoulders, man.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: I've never felt that running ever, ever.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: I just it felt weird.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: I still don't know to this day what it was, man.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it was the weather, the wind that was like, you know, hitting my shoulders, or maybe I I was over aggressive in my hands or my movement.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Man, I don't know.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: I suspect the the bottle, and just you know, it's 26 miles.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of steps, you know.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: You might think it's just a very small bottle, but there's a lot of steps that happen in the marathon, you know, the carrion it's not the same of just like walking with.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Probably the equivalent of walking we're like 10-15 pounds for quite some distance.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: You know, it eventually it gets on you.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: Obviously, it was very hot too, which cramps up muscles and whatnot.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, this this kudos to you, man.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: This race, I don't think most people who are gonna listen to will have had similar conditions of a marathon, and yet you finished it.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: And that that's not just to like gaslight or or how people say now, you know, over shares, just you know, running a full with rain.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: Rain goes away, it's hot, it's now humid, it's a loop.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: Then you got 20.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: I think it even went up to 30 mile per hour gust winds, and it's never a tailwind, it's always straight ahead, you know, and this being your first marathon on top of that.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: Um, it's just insane for that to be the first, you know.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very little shade, too, from what I remember.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very little shade.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: Um, very little shade.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: So that was the first thing that I started feeling.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: I started looking at my watch, and I'm like, man, like, you know, can I afford to just you know slow down here or or even come to a walking pace?
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: And you know, I pushed through.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: I I didn't walk at that point, I just kept going.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: I think we wrapped it back around towards the beginning of the race, and then this is where the heavy miles start coming in.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: I think we're like into the 18s, uh, and uh my pace is off.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: My pace is off at one point.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: Um I think uh my legs started like just not giving up on me, but they were they just felt heavy, you know.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: Um not that I couldn't handle it, but it just felt heavy.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: And and um and yeah, my heart rate started going up a little bit.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: And now I'm like in the one like 58, 160, and that's you know, it's not bad, but you know, it's it's it's not what I'm used to training, you know.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: I was at the 145, so I knew my body was was going through something, you know.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: I felt it.
- 45:47SPEAKER_00: Those are the initial signs for me.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: And so um I had to slow down.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: So I slowed down, and um man, I I was I was completely I was completely, man, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to finish this.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: And I think it was at mile 22 um that this started happening.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: And I just see people passing me, people passing me, and I'm like, man, uh what time I started getting worried at what time is the cutoff.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: Like, am I gonna be able to make this cutoff here?
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: You know, I I think it's six hours, right?
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: Or something like that.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: And so I um all of a sudden I see the guy that's pacing, I want to say five.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: So I think he was pacing uh five hours, and he passes me.
- 46:30SPEAKER_00: And this gave me hope.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: This gave me hope that oh my god, like it's not what I think it is, you know.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: Like, this is very attainable.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe I was just overexerting myself.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: So I try to keep up with this gentleman.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: It was only him and one person at this point, so I guess he lost all his crew, and so I started pacing with him, and and this guy led me like through some difficult miles, man.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: Some difficult miles.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: And then at one point, I'm looking at my watch and I'm like, there's no freaking way, there's no freaking way.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: This guy is he's supposed to be five, and he's just going faster and faster.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: And I think he might have made a deal with someone there where he was just like, Well, we're gonna do better times, since just me and you, and um, I lose him, and I'm like, Oh my god, this is this is you know, like I that was my angel at this moment, you know.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: Luckily, I had another angel that I wasn't expecting, and and it came through clutch, man.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: So I um I I got my AirPods on, and uh, you know, when someone texts you, um, I had everyone muted but my wife, and my wife texted me and she's like, I you know, I think she mentioned something around the words like, Oh, you should be around here, I'm tracking you, and she goes, I'm so proud of you, like Isaac is so happy for you, like just words that that got me so emotional, man.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: It got me emotional and it reminded me that you know I can do this, you know.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: It gave me a moment of clarity of yay, stop acting like you know, you know what, and and get and get and get your butt going, you know.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: Um and man, I got emotional and I I tear it was joy, but it was also like letting go of the pain that I had and just go forward, man.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: Um it meant a lot.
- 48:12SPEAKER_00: It meant a lot, and I had no intention of having that come through my ears.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: Like I wasn't expecting it, but it came when it needed to come.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know how that happened, but it meant everything to me, and it meant everything to me in that race.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: And at that moment, I kept going, man.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: I kept moving.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: I was going at a slow pace, but I was not walking it, and I was we're we're we were just cruising.
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: And I found someone that I was running with or someone that I saw there, and and we, you know, we were both pushing each other.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: It was their first marathon as well, and through conversation, we were just keeping each other motivated, and now that was my pacer, and we were both pacing each other.
- 48:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and then with time, we just started creating a space, but then it's funny how the world works.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: Someone else shows up and Fitz shows up from the bushes again, you know, and Fitz is there for the last mile and a half.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: All this I'm talking about happened from mile 22 to like mile 24, you know.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: It sounds like two miles, like nothing, you know.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: But once I got to 24, the importance of two miles is everything to me, man, because I knew at that point that's it.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: This is what I do best.
- 49:28SPEAKER_00: I do two miles in my sleep.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: I do this every day.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: Two miles is easy to me.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: And so that is my in my head.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: I'm like, man, here we go.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: These are the two miles.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: That's all I need to do.
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: Then I see fits.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, man, all the stars are aligning for me right now, and and that's it.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: We the last you know, mile and a half, you were there for me, and I don't know how to say this, but I remember the last half marathon.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: I collapsed, right?
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: I literally fainted because I gave you my all.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: And I did not want that to happen this time around.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: I did not feel like I was gonna faint, but you were in my ear, and you said, for this next point six or whatever it was, I need you to just pit the gas and don't look back.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: And in my head, all I thought about was collapse, collapse, collapse.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: Like I'm gonna collapse, I'm gonna get that.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: And I I want to finish the race, I just don't want to collapse, but you know, why not?
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: I've been training for this and I can do this, and so I pushed it.
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: You know, you guided me to the end, and I ended up pushing everything that I had left in the tank out, and I crossed that line and I did not faint.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: I actually felt good.
- 50:35SPEAKER_00: I needed to eat something right away though, so I I hit up those pancakes that were not great, but I I told them, but I I did it, I did it, and it was it was unreal.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: It was unreal because during that process, I'm telling you, man, from mile 22 to like 24, it's just sounds so easy.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: It's just you know, but it's it was so difficult.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: Like mentally, mentally, that you know, you you you're you're doubting yourself.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: Why I'm at 22 miles, I'm good.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: Who else can run 22 miles?
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: Let's stop here.
- 51:03SPEAKER_00: It's easy to stop here.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: Why not just stop?
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: You know, yeah, but that taught me that there's gonna be obstacles in life, there's gonna be things that I gotta deal with, and I gotta push through.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: And the marathon prepared me to see the end goal.
- 51:19SPEAKER_00: You know, we used to work together and we used to talk about presentations a lot, and one of the things that you always said was always keep the end goal in mind, you know, and so throughout this whole race, that needed to be kept in mind, finishing this race, you know, and the end goal was to get this done, and um, we got it done, man.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: We got it done.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: It was it was emotional, man.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: It was unbelievable, and the support system was insane, man, because we had just finished, I had just crossed.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: And as I'm crossing, by the way, my wife and son couldn't make it.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: They had COVID, they were really sick, and you know, obviously, I already I might have had COVID too, by the way, but but uh um my uh they couldn't make it, but a game's wife and daughters were there, and they saw me run and they were screaming my name as I'm you know emptying the gas tank.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, I ate my pancakes real quick, went to go see them.
- 52:14SPEAKER_00: You already had turned back to go get Gabe.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: And I I started walking towards you guys, and I realized that wasn't a good idea.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: But I tried to walk towards you guys, and you know, I wanted to see Gabe cross that line too, man, because Gabe Gabe put in a lot of work, Gabe um very proud of Gabe as well, too, you know.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: So it was good to see him cross the line, I crossed the line, my brother crossed the line as well.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: My brother, my brother's another one, man.
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: I don't even know how this guy did this.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: Like he he had like a little like turbo pack, you know, that he unleashed.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: I gotta read I gotta invite some of these guys on, but uh, yeah, for your brother.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: Funny enough, he mentions I coached both of those guys in that race, and like the one thing I will say with your brother, man, is um not not to pit anyone against each other, but he was like the silent one.
- 52:58SPEAKER_02: He was like, hey, let's not share my runs, let's not post anything, let's just work.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: And uh it's funny, I think two weeks in I was like, man, just working with him, I gotta change the approach for him because he is different.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Like it's weird.
- 53:10SPEAKER_02: I can't to this day kind of quite picture it, but we we figured out a cadence on like uh no pun intended there on how to get him to run, and it was more effort-based and miles and pace.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: And man, like six, eight weeks in, it was just like, I'm like, whoa, this guy has progressed so much.
- 53:24SPEAKER_02: And I I knew before he started that race that he was gonna have a good race, man.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, talking about that in support system, that's what I wanted to ask you.
- 53:31SPEAKER_02: So you make it through the race, you know, and and you have one of the best finishes, I would say, ever.
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: When it's like this is still a goal, a dream of mine, too.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: When you get to do a marathon with your buds, man, and family, and just finish the race and you guys are in it together.
- 53:43SPEAKER_02: Like, what was that like?
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: You finished the race, you know, you're having the toughest time to mile 22, 24, which by the way happens to everyone.
- 53:50SPEAKER_02: Like, those are the toughest miles.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: Anything after 20, you know, we obviously strive to be in the greatest fitness ever, um, so that we can push on, and that could be on to the next goal, but um, those are some tough miles nonetheless.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: You finished, you got the fan there, you got friends, you know.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: What are what was that like having everyone there to celebrate with?
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man, it felt uh, you know, it felt good.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: Um, the initial moment is I I gotta take it in myself, man.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: I just gotta like, well, first off, I'm checking for engine lights, man.
- 54:19SPEAKER_00: I'm checking for like, you know, do I still got legs?
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: You know, like yeah, am I still good here, you know?
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: And and once you check all that and make sure you're good, you just take it in and and and and you look back and like man, you just start you start like breaking these runs or this run into segments, like man, you know, all this to get here to this moment, you know, you take it in and it just feels it feels relieving, it feels it feels like you accomplished something that wasn't supposed to be accomplished, you know.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: And um it it it just you can't describe it, man.
- 54:56SPEAKER_00: You can't describe it because it's I didn't think I could do it.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: I just we started this podcast saying with never, I will never run a race, you know.
- 55:03SPEAKER_00: And you know, not you know, even a marathon at that point.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: It was uh what isn't even in my radar.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, I took a self-inventory check, took it all in, appreciated that moment.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: I called my wife immediately, told her what what her words meant to me.
- 55:19SPEAKER_00: I called my put my son on there, and she put my son on there, and we we spoke, and um, you know, it solidified.
- 55:25SPEAKER_00: It solidified that that I had the support from them, it solidified the fact that I um, you know, I had uh I had the right people around me with my peers as well.
- 55:36SPEAKER_00: My brother was there, my brother was just like, wow, like holy, holy, you know what.
- 55:41SPEAKER_00: You know, and and yeah, man, it was good.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: It was it was just good, man.
- 55:45SPEAKER_00: Everyone was, you know, they're they're running their race, their own journey, you know, and but it was phenomenal.
- 55:49SPEAKER_00: I think we all took a picture at the end, and maybe we should probably show that picture later.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: But you all get together, we you were in there because you know you were a part of this as much as we were.
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: Um, and and it's funny because you know, these moments uh you don't forget, man.
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: You'll you'll know exactly your first marathon, you know.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: And I remember this, I'll remember that day forever, you know.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: It'll live with me forever.
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: And you know, what you did for us was just, you know, it was it was from your heart, you know.
- 56:17SPEAKER_00: And you don't you don't know what that means to someone, but it because you know, you just did out of the kindness of your heart, but you made me do something that I didn't think was possible, you know, and and you saw it through.
- 56:29SPEAKER_00: Not only did you put the train forward, but you flew over just to make it happen or see it happen.
- 56:34SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, which leads to our next race, you know, you signed up, you know, heading that way, yeah.
- 56:41SPEAKER_00: And you know, while I I don't know if I'm gonna be anywhere near your time, I'm gonna be there with you and we're gonna cross that line, man.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited to uh to start that process as well.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: And and I'm working right now to continue building that base.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: So when training block comes again, it's not it's not something that's on.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we talked about earlier, I mean not alluding.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: So we're both doing for those listening in the Indianapolis marathon here come November.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: Uh this will be Ozzy's second, my third officially.
- 57:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for some reason everyone thinks that it's just I guess between the coaching and and being a nerd of running and all that, and you know, kind of like you said, man, first off, thank you, you know, for the kudos, man.
- 57:24SPEAKER_02: Like uh I really just kind of do it the same way this podcast started.
- 57:27SPEAKER_02: I've just just a love there for running that I haven't lost and keeps growing, and it's just the love and passion of like helping people and runners, and probably something I get apart from my dad, um, who was like not necessarily a teacher, but everyone kind of considered him a teacher.
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, that leads us to the next endeavor, man.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: I I signed up for indie, I think it was funny enough, November, December last year, they were doing like an early pre-sale, and I was like, man, I'm doing indie for the marathon, and I put it in that chat.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: And Ozzie and uh George, who's also on the who's on this podcast, all signed up, and we're doing that in November.
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: Um, so Ozzie, you're you're currently still running, as you mentioned, you know.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Obviously, your next endeavor is indie.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: What are you looking to get?
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: I know it's still early, but like what kind of life lessons have you learned from the first marathon?
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: What are you looking to have happen in in Indy?
- 58:09SPEAKER_02: Um, what's your thoughts going into it?
- 58:11SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, going back to this marathon, uh, I talked about how you prove to yourself you could do something difficult.
- 58:18SPEAKER_00: Now, when I face a difficult situation, whether it's at work, whether it's personal, I take myself back to those moments where I didn't think I could do something like the marathon in those crucial moments, in those crucial miles, and prove to myself that there is a way through.
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: I just gotta find it.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: And and if I can go through those tough situations, I can apply and see through these tough situations that I'm dealing with on my professional or in my personal style.
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: So I've seen the darkness, is what I'm saying.
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: And I can and I came back from it.
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: So whatever life throws at me, I I can I should be able to overcome it, hopefully, you know.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: And then as far as my goal, man, so you know, I I know now the biggest thing was completing one, right?
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: Making sure I can get one done.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: And now I know that demon.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: And now I wanna I wanna do better.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: I wanna I wanna get like a 430 time.
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: So, you know, coach fits, you know, start setting up that training for for 430, you know.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: Um, because uh I want to definitely get it done, you know, um under five hours for sure, but at least for the 430 would be the uh the goal that I want to shoot for.
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: And I know it's gonna be tough because uh, you know, speed is um tempo runs is something that I I definitely have an opportunity with that I should implement more.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, like I said, this is uh this is where I'm I'm doing things to help with that, right?
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: So the strength training is gonna help me with that as well.
- 59:42SPEAKER_00: So, you know, having your gym now in my house, and and now that you know that I have a gym, you know what, you can incorporate some of that into my training plan, you know.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: So um yeah, I think that that's what's next for me um in that aspect for for the running side of it.
- 59:57SPEAKER_00: Um, I definitely want to get to the 430.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: I'm also intrigued on you know this process of running a marathon, but now we're going on a plane, right?
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: So I'm taking a plane right from Miami to Indy.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_00: And then I don't even know, should I book a flight two days later?
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_00: Should I book a flight the day after?
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_00: Because surprisingly, so I felt really good after this marathon, by the way.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_00: So the next day I was good, you know.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_00: Like, um, oh, one thing I gotta say the compression boots, man, if you don't gotta pay or page them now for like$200, man.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: Um, do that, do that.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: Uh it is um, yeah, I was on them things all the time and they they really helped me out.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, so this is gonna be a new um something new for me, man.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: You know, we're gonna be traveling and we're gonna be uh adapting to that travel, you know.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: Think about it.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_00: If you're traveling, you're probably gonna be putting a lot of walking going on, right?
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_00: Is that wise for the marathon?
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_00: You know, some things I gotta think about.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm gonna have to obviously navigate those waters and learn from that, you know.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_00: And then also after the marathon's over, you know, we gotta fly back and figure that travels out as well.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: So maybe I'm overthinking it, but you know, that's something I'm not used to.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: So I gotta, you know.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a it's a new uh new element for lack of better words, you know, that's gonna be figured out into.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, we'll get that sorted.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: None of my marathons have been at home.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: Um and now living in Colorado.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_02: That's a whole nother Endeavor because doing a marathon at altitude, I don't know about that one yet.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and I do want the added benefit of going to sea level this time.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_02: Um, but we'll get that sorted.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: And obviously, we're not gonna Indy tends to be a lot colder and nice flat course, no tsunamis, no 30 mile per hour winds usually knock on wood here.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: So it should be a fun race, and obviously we're gonna we're gonna do that together.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: Uh me, you and George.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_02: And uh we'll see.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_02: I'm still trying to invite some other friends too, but uh we got some people going out there and we'll have a good time and uh hell, maybe we do a sync up episode on this.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_00: That's that's another part too, man, that you don't have to be critical and and be so um strict.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_00: Man, you're running a marathon, make it fun, man.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_00: Like I that's one this time around, obviously, I want to get a goal 430, but man, I just I wanna I want to you you can take so much pressure off yourself by just enjoying yourself, man.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_00: And like for sure.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_00: You know, I know I can do this now, so now let's have fun with it.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: Then you don't have to be so hard on yourself, man.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_00: So that's something I'm looking forward to do this time around as well, you know.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_00: Take it all in, you know.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_00: This is uh, you know, and another thing too, man, like the people that are you know, this was a smaller race, but I see all these videos of these bigger marathons and the support system that's out there is insane.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, I'm excited to look forward to that.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Is is Indy one of those fits?
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_00: Is it is it one of those races?
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_02: Pretty big now, and uh people pretty big now and getting bigger because the running world is getting bigger.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_02: Now it's getting harder to get into majors, which leaves a lot of the good American races getting busier too.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: And indie is definitely a big one.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: A lot of people go for course records and PRs.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_02: That's also why I chose it.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: Uh um, and also the cooler temps giving me time for November.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_02: But uh, I believe last year, and I could be wrong for those listening, but uh 22,000 people, 23,000, something like somewhere in the 18 to 20,000 something people.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna be big, they'll have a nice big expo.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: I believe Brooks is the main sponsor, and there'll be a lot of sponsors of the expo.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_02: Um, there'll be, I'm sure, some pop-ups and stuff with some brands.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_02: So you'll get the full marathon experience.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_02: Um, not that you didn't, but like, you know, more like seeing vendors and support and brands showing up and stuff like that.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_02: Granted, for those listening, West Palm Beach is actually by Gardens of Life, which is the supplement company, the very healthy one, but like you'll you'll see a different level.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_02: I'll just put it that way.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: So um that also makes it fun.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_02: And yeah, we'll be careful I'm being on the legs.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: That's a lesson I learned from my second one, too, not walking too much the day before, but it should be a fun one for sure.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be good, man.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: And and this that's another thing too that I I I um I'm looking forward to now.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_00: Every time I do vacations now, I I tend to run in different places, and it feels good to like do that, you know.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, doing more trips to for more runs or traveling for for races sounds very appealing to me.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, that's that's the whole thing about the lifestyle now, too.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_00: Like that's even while on vacation, I'm still I'm still getting some miles in, and it feels good to do it in a different place or a different city or country or whatever it is, you know.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_02: So yeah, best way to see a city and also stay active with like not having to look for a gym or not having to look for some kind of trainer or some special added, you know, tool needed.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_02: Um it's a great point, man.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_02: I love running and traveling, just going to a new place and just kind of scouring or looking at the area that way as well, especially in the morning when it's uh not too crowded.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_02: Well, on that note, um, you know, you shared a lot of nuggets on here, but I would ask if if you would think of any new advice, because obviously you achieved a lot, right?
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_02: You ran your first half, you ran your full, you lost some weight, you got active, you had a change of lifestyle.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_02: Um, what advice would you give for someone in similar conditions and wanting to make that change and get active and maybe it's running, you know.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: Um, what advice would you give them to those listening?
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_00: Man, I think uh I think it starts with you, right?
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_00: You know, the person that is contemplating this, you know, um no one's gonna make you do anything.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_00: You know, it's gonna have to come from you.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_00: And you know, luckily you have the opportunity to make that switch now without something forcing you to do that move.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_00: Whether it's a health reason, whether it's a health scare from a family member, you you have the opportunity to change now, you know, and it's your choice, you know, and it's better if it's your choice than being forced to do it.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: So choose now, choose you, choose your family, you know, and and then apart from that is just start small.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_00: Start small.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: Don't don't overcomplicate it, you know.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: Like I said, your journey is your journey.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_00: Make it your own, you know, and then also seek help, like as far as your peers, find someone, a support system, maybe like you know, a running group or something like that.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: Nowadays you said it fits, it's so popular now, right?
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, you have run groups all over the place, you know?
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think that uh that you know it's out there, it's just for you to choose it, you know.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_00: Don't compare yourself to others.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_00: That's huge, you know.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: I said it before and I'll say it again.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, you know, comparing yourself is is gonna rob your joy, you know, it's gonna it's a thief of your joy.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_00: So um do it, do it your way.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_00: And and um, and yeah, man, that's that's all I can say.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_00: You know, you you're gonna have to choose yourself, and that's all I can say.
