- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a bonus episode
- 0:14Speaker 1: of Long Story Short the podcast. I'm Megan, Hi, I'm Wendy,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and today we're discussing a little daytime drama from Hallmark's
- 0:24Speaker 1: Summer Night's series. We have two more movies, I believe
- 0:28Speaker 1: after this one, before this series concludes. You are really
- 0:33Speaker 1: looking forward to this one, and I've got some thoughts.
- 0:35Speaker 1: But first, Wendy, do you have a synopsis for us?
- 0:38Speaker 2: I absolutely do a little daytime drama. In order to
- 0:42Speaker 2: save her daytime soap drama from cancelation, headwriter Maggie must
- 0:47Speaker 2: convince Darren fan favorite actor and her real life ex
- 0:51Speaker 2: boyfriend to return to The show stars Jin Lily, Ryan Pavey,
- 0:55Speaker 2: and Linda Dano.
- 0:57Speaker 1: What was your first impression of this movie.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I didn't love it as much as I hoped I would.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I had real high expectations for it, and those expectations
- 1:11Speaker 2: got me again.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I thought it was a little slow.
- 1:15Speaker 2: It lacked tension, and overall, I thought it was kind
- 1:19Speaker 2: of a weak story.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I agree about all of that. I wrote this movie
- 1:26Speaker 1: was fine, but boring. There's nothing blatantly bad about it.
- 1:30Speaker 1: The story holds up. I liked the actors, and yet
- 1:33Speaker 1: I still didn't really care about it. Same, same, same,
- 1:39Speaker 1: Before we talk specifics of our likes and dislikes, let's
- 1:43Speaker 1: go to news and notes. Okay, As always, this movie
- 1:47Speaker 1: was filmed in Canada, specifically Vancouver, and the movie studio
- 1:52Speaker 1: they use are the Bridge Studios in Burnaby, British Columbia.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Oh interesting, interesting, those are actual real that's an actual
- 2:03Speaker 2: real like uh set?
- 2:05Speaker 1: That is my interesting?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yes? Ah cool? Yeah, I was wondering. I was like,
- 2:11Speaker 2: did they film this in Los Angeles and they just,
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know whatever, I'm sure they didn't. No, obviously, now
- 2:16Speaker 2: we know they didn't. All right, what else you got?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Director Heather Hawthorne Doyle shared that a week prior to
- 2:24Speaker 1: finishing this movie, she was still editing it. So we
- 2:28Speaker 1: have talked about the tight round of these movies, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: she shared on Instagram like the week before, I'm still
- 2:34Speaker 1: finishing it, but it's gonna be great.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So a week ago, ten days ago, she was still
- 2:41Speaker 2: editing this movie.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Correct, Yes, ma'am.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Wow, that's nuts, that's absolutely nuts. I have some news
- 2:48Speaker 2: and notes too. Did you know that Jen Lily and
- 2:51Speaker 2: Ryan Pavey both worked in daytime television? Well?
- 2:54Speaker 1: I have that Jen Lily was on Days of Our Lives,
- 2:56Speaker 1: but I didn't know about Ryan Pavey.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't remember what show he worked on. Sorry, guys,
- 3:02Speaker 2: but don't you have some inside track on Days? I do.
- 3:06Speaker 1: A very good college friend of mine has worked on
- 3:10Speaker 1: Days of Our Lives since we were in college, since
- 3:12Speaker 1: he was an intern in college, has now won several
- 3:16Speaker 1: Emmys as a Days of Our Lives Assistant Producer Associate producer.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's an ap. He has several emmys from his role
- 3:26Speaker 1: on the Days of Our Lives team? Now is Days
- 3:30Speaker 1: still on?
- 3:30Speaker 2: Because they like?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yes?
- 3:32Speaker 2: What well? I know, but I thought, like I remember,
- 3:36Speaker 2: like early pandemic, like they put them on pause or
- 3:39Speaker 2: there was talk of cancelation or so contracts not being
- 3:43Speaker 2: renewed or something like that.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Days of Our Lives films so far ahead. This is
- 3:49Speaker 1: my insider info that even like in March and April,
- 3:52Speaker 1: they were filmed through October, so they just needed to
- 3:57Speaker 1: do editing, which for the most part could be done remote,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and then they opened up. I think summertime last year
- 4:05Speaker 1: was when shows were allowed to start filming again with
- 4:07Speaker 1: pandemic restrictions, but they never took time off. They were
- 4:12Speaker 1: farther ahead, and they always film ahead, and they have
- 4:16Speaker 1: they'll take like a one week, a two week, a
- 4:18Speaker 1: three week hiatus and they'll get like way ahead, and
- 4:20Speaker 1: then they'll take a big break and then they'll get
- 4:22Speaker 1: way ahead, so they're not filming, you know, a week
- 4:26Speaker 1: of week or two prior, the way sometimes sitcoms are.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So I don't know, like I was gonna say, and
- 4:33Speaker 2: like we saw in this movie, right, and I don't
- 4:35Speaker 2: know how the other soap opera spared, yeah, but I
- 4:39Speaker 2: know Days was fine.
- 4:40Speaker 1: They did not miss a beat.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I haven't watched soaps in a really long time. I
- 4:46Speaker 2: was on my children watcher for some time, uh huh,
- 4:50Speaker 2: years and years ago, but that's now long gone. I think,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I know it's not on the air anymore. But I
- 4:56Speaker 2: thought like it might have been the computer, you know all,
- 5:01Speaker 2: it might have been online somewhere, but honestly, I don't
- 5:04Speaker 2: think it exists anymore.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Days was my soap, and Days is my husband's soap.
- 5:09Speaker 1: He's watched since high school and still watches. I do not,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but he does. That just blows my mind. That's so funny.
- 5:17Speaker 1: That's so so funny. All right.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Linda Dano, who played Alice in this movie is a
- 5:24Speaker 2: big time former soap star. This movie was her debut
- 5:30Speaker 2: on the Hallmark Channel. However, she did previously appear in
- 5:34Speaker 2: a Hallmark Movies and Mystery movie okay, which is like,
- 5:39Speaker 2: I know that's like a sister channel, but like, isn't
- 5:42Speaker 2: it still Hallmark? Right?
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yes? I think so, I know.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I just don't know, like why the note was so
- 5:49Speaker 2: significant When I read it, They're like, this is her debut,
- 5:52Speaker 2: but actually, you know, I have a news and note
- 5:57Speaker 2: that you may not have caught.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:00Speaker 2: This movie also featured Cameron Bancroft. Do you know who
- 6:05Speaker 2: that is?
- 6:07Speaker 1: No?
- 6:08Speaker 2: Okay, so he was the I don't know if he
- 6:11Speaker 2: was like the executive with the channel or the soap
- 6:15Speaker 2: or the whatever. He was the gray haired man who.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Was kind of the boss.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Cameron. I didn't okay, I didn't realize it was Cameron
- 6:24Speaker 2: Bancroft until about halfway through the movie and nine O
- 6:28Speaker 2: two one O fans know him as Joe Bradley, CSU
- 6:31Speaker 2: quarterback with the heart condition that saved Donna from ray
- 6:33Speaker 2: on Halloween Night.
- 6:34Speaker 1: WHOA, I'm looking at his photo and I watching this movie,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I thought, huh, his face seems familiar. But we've seen
- 6:42Speaker 1: so many Hallmark movies. I think my brain just thought
- 6:44Speaker 1: he's just been in another. But now that I'm looking
- 6:47Speaker 1: at his face, I can totally see it's.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Joe Bradley, the guy who passed out when he got
- 6:54Speaker 2: off the airplane.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Look at that way to go, Joe, Well, I Cameron.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I was shocked so like I looked him up last
- 7:04Speaker 2: night because I was like, Wow, he's full out gray,
- 7:07Speaker 2: like he's only fifty one years old, and I'm like,
- 7:12Speaker 2: he is. He looks so much older than that. Like
- 7:16Speaker 2: to me, I'm like, really, he should get rid of
- 7:18Speaker 2: that gray, and he could play younger roles, don't you
- 7:20Speaker 2: think so? Yes?
- 7:23Speaker 1: But yeah, you think you could totally play younger roles?
- 7:27Speaker 2: Is that a super problematic statement?
- 7:30Speaker 1: No? I think the gray places him in a specific role, right,
- 7:36Speaker 1: You're gonna get the older dude role. And I think
- 7:38Speaker 1: if you had dyed your hair brown, but look, go
- 7:40Speaker 1: with it. Maybe he likes to play the older dude role. Eh, maybe,
- 7:44Speaker 1: but because we certainly know that we've got fifty year
- 7:46Speaker 1: old leading men on the Hallmark channel.
- 7:48Speaker 2: For sure, I get it. I get it. It just
- 7:50Speaker 2: it blew my mind. I couldn't believe.
- 7:52Speaker 1: That it was him. Yeah, that's a great note. I'm
- 7:56Speaker 1: glad you said that because I definitely had a moment
- 7:58Speaker 1: of recognition, but no ever in a million years would
- 8:01Speaker 1: have placed him. Yeah. Yeah, So I watched this when
- 8:04Speaker 1: I was very tired, so I did not do the
- 8:06Speaker 1: research together. You got anything else, So that's it, all right?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Do you like about this movie?
- 8:15Speaker 2: It's Ryan Pavey for me? Yeah, Like, he's so easy
- 8:19Speaker 2: to look at and I'm going to say it here first, guys,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and don't at me, but I think he's more handsome
- 8:25Speaker 2: than Tyler Hans. Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's those blue eyes.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Did you notice in his headshot that they have hanging.
- 8:37Speaker 2: On the set.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I was like, I wonder if that's his actual headshot
- 8:39Speaker 1: because that really works for me. I could see how
- 8:41Speaker 1: that would work for him, those like blue eyes looking
- 8:45Speaker 1: right at you. Like that headshot because I would believe
- 8:48Speaker 1: that if it were. He's gorgeous.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And I hated him in A Timeless Christmas, which was
- 8:55Speaker 2: one of the movies early movies who were we reviewed
- 8:59Speaker 2: late last year. I didn't hate him, I just hated
- 9:03Speaker 2: the movie, right, But because he play said a dummy
- 9:05Speaker 2: in that movie because he like woke up from like
- 9:08Speaker 2: the past or some crap like that. But it was
- 9:11Speaker 2: this this movie, and he was also in that. It
- 9:15Speaker 2: wasn't called Breakup boot Camp. I think it was called
- 9:18Speaker 2: Breakup boot Camp at one time. You know what I'm
- 9:20Speaker 2: talking about?
- 9:21Speaker 1: Do you remember?
- 9:21Speaker 2: It was Miranda And I really liked him in that
- 9:24Speaker 2: movie too, So he's doing it for me.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I enjoy him, I would say, almost as much as
- 9:30Speaker 1: Tyler Harantz.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.
- 9:35Speaker 1: You know what I loved is how this show took
- 9:38Speaker 1: total digs at like some soap opera tropes and like
- 9:42Speaker 1: a in a joking way. But when he comes back
- 9:46Speaker 1: and he's talking to one of the actors and he's like,
- 9:50Speaker 1: you were like three years old when I left, and
- 9:52Speaker 1: she's like, that's what I was on soaps. Do you
- 9:53Speaker 1: know what the term is when they age a soap
- 9:56Speaker 1: opera character. No, there's a term, and it is the
- 10:01Speaker 1: abbreviation ISSAURUS, which stands for Soap Opera rapid aging syndrome
- 10:05Speaker 1: when they zap a character forward in time because all
- 10:09Speaker 1: of a sudden they need them not to be three
- 10:10Speaker 1: years old, but they need them to be sixteen years old. Yes,
- 10:13Speaker 1: so she was sourist. But I also liked how they
- 10:17Speaker 1: talked about, like, you know, we jen Lily's character. Maggie
- 10:22Speaker 1: really wanted it to be more realistic. She didn't want
- 10:24Speaker 1: to be bringing back these characters with the amnesia from
- 10:28Speaker 1: the dead, and she didn't really want all of these
- 10:30Speaker 1: like dramatic. You know, if you've watched a soap opera
- 10:34Speaker 1: like Days of Our Lives, I still vividly remember when
- 10:37Speaker 1: Marlena was possessed by the devil and the town of
- 10:39Speaker 1: Salem was hot for weeks and weeks and weeks on
- 10:43Speaker 1: end because of the presence of the devil in their town.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I mean, that's like very mild compared to some of
- 10:48Speaker 1: the other things that they've done. So I like kind
- 10:51Speaker 1: of the dig at the unrealistic storylines we get on soaps.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I think that's what people want in their soaps. I
- 11:00Speaker 1: read a review that wondered if there was perhaps a
- 11:04Speaker 1: parallel between like pushing back on what people want from
- 11:11Speaker 1: their soap operas and what the network thinks his best.
- 11:16Speaker 1: As you know, Hallmark is undergoing a big change. Their
- 11:19Speaker 1: executives have had a lot of turnover. They're working hard.
- 11:23Speaker 1: They're working to address some of the diversity issues in
- 11:28Speaker 1: their movies, and there is a vocal group who doesn't
- 11:32Speaker 1: want that to happen. So this particular reviewer wondered if
- 11:35Speaker 1: there was a parallel there.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Oh, that's really interesting, h really interesting. I was wondering too.
- 11:43Speaker 2: There was a comment at one throughout the movie where
- 11:48Speaker 2: like the Cameron Bancroft guy, I don't even know the
- 11:52Speaker 2: boss guy, he kept forgetting Maggie's name. She's like been
- 11:57Speaker 2: a head writer for four years off on the show
- 11:59Speaker 2: and he doesn't know her name. And I thought, like,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I wonder if that's like some sort of weird backhanded storyline,
- 12:06Speaker 2: because maybe it's a male dominated dominated like community. What's
- 12:15Speaker 2: the word I'm looking for here? Male dominated business? Sure,
- 12:20Speaker 2: and these women are trying to like writers are trying
- 12:22Speaker 2: to come up and like these men are being jerks.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I don't know, hm.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I mean, I could definitely be reading into it, but
- 12:29Speaker 2: I thought it was an interesting note.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I like it. In the movie. I like it.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I love Linda Dano. I don't have anything else to
- 12:36Speaker 1: say about her other than I loved her. I found
- 12:38Speaker 1: her presence on screen to be very kind of calming
- 12:41Speaker 1: and enjoyable, and I just I was like, oh, I
- 12:43Speaker 1: would like to spend time with you. I think you
- 12:46Speaker 1: make well. She made the movie for me.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I also thought she was like chic af too, like
- 12:52Speaker 2: I just love that pop collar, like in several scenes,
- 12:56Speaker 2: and like the jewelry and yeah, I just liked her lot.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah, or Linda Daniel, please make her Yeah, make her
- 13:03Speaker 1: a sidekick more often. I agree. So another thing I
- 13:08Speaker 1: liked is that Darren and Maggie rekindled a friendship before
- 13:12Speaker 1: they rekindled their romance, and I liked that they were
- 13:14Speaker 1: in each other's corners. There is a you know, he
- 13:19Speaker 1: wants her to share her ideas with the executives, and
- 13:23Speaker 1: she makes a comment at one point where she says,
- 13:26Speaker 1: you know, he could leave to go to another play,
- 13:28Speaker 1: which is certainly his right. And she's not saying, you know,
- 13:31Speaker 1: he can't ever leave us. We can't survive without him.
- 13:35Speaker 1: You know, she wants what's best for him in his career.
- 13:39Speaker 1: And I liked that, even though you know, they have
- 13:42Speaker 1: their little misunderstanding and like their friendship.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Right, So I thought they had nice flirting, But I
- 13:51Speaker 2: also saw her as a like a little annoying sister
- 13:55Speaker 2: and not like an ex lover. Oh, because did they
- 14:00Speaker 2: say that they had been together for like three years
- 14:03Speaker 2: or something like that and then he broke up with her? Right,
- 14:06Speaker 2: I don't know. There's just a lot of history in
- 14:08Speaker 2: three years. A lot of things happened in three years.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Like I didn't get like that sort of like I
- 14:13Speaker 2: don't know. I thought I thought, actually I thought the
- 14:15Speaker 2: two of them lacked chemistry.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought they had better friendship chemistry than romantic history.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Me too, Me too, Me too. I thought they had
- 14:25Speaker 1: a good report. They seemed comfortable with each other. Right,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I agree with that too.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But like if they didn't get together at the end
- 14:33Speaker 2: of this movie, it would have been fine with me, right,
- 14:36Speaker 2: you know, Like, Okay, whatever I think generally is super adorable.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I think she's so pretty. She's got like the prettiest eyes,
- 14:43Speaker 2: and her makeup looked so pretty in this movie. Yes,
- 14:47Speaker 2: I just wish she would get better scripts. The last
- 14:50Speaker 2: movie I saw her in was Snow Kissed and that
- 14:52Speaker 2: was freaking awful. So like in this movie didn't have
- 14:56Speaker 2: like a ton of substance either. So like I just
- 14:59Speaker 2: wish like either she'd be offered better stuff or like
- 15:02Speaker 2: she chose better stuff, something that had like I'm trying
- 15:06Speaker 2: to think, like, can you recall any movie this year
- 15:10Speaker 2: that was really good that had like a strong female
- 15:13Speaker 2: lead that she would have been good into.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Honestly, these movies fly out on my brain the second
- 15:18Speaker 1: I've been talking.
- 15:19Speaker 3: About them, so I'd have to actually look back at
- 15:21Speaker 3: the movies that we've talked about to refresh my memory.
- 15:25Speaker 3: All Right, I think she could hold her own on
- 15:27Speaker 3: a movie that had a little humor, that was a
- 15:29Speaker 3: little faster paced. She said in an Instagram post that
- 15:33Speaker 3: this was her favorite movie she's ever done for Hallmark.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Wow. So maybe she, just like you said, hasn't been
- 15:39Speaker 1: given the greatest scripts and she just keeps she just
- 15:42Speaker 1: wants to be a team player and keeps on truck in.
- 15:44Speaker 1: But maybe she'll get something for Christmas that is a
- 15:46Speaker 1: little better.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Maybe. Also, she had some really pretty outfits, yes, really cute.
- 15:53Speaker 2: There was this one she was like in a strapless
- 15:56Speaker 2: black I think it was a pants suit and it
- 15:59Speaker 2: had pockets. It was at the convention party. It was
- 16:03Speaker 2: just soo I know you were tired when you're watching this,
- 16:05Speaker 2: so you probably didn't see it.
- 16:06Speaker 1: But she it was so pretty well, I loved the
- 16:10Speaker 1: pantsuit or the jumpsuit she wore in the beginning that
- 16:13Speaker 1: tied in the back. The purple went so cute. And
- 16:16Speaker 1: then when she was at the anniversary party and she
- 16:19Speaker 1: was wearing that black dress, her eye makeup looked amazing.
- 16:21Speaker 1: She had a smoky eye that was real pretty. I
- 16:24Speaker 1: loved it.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I know, she's so pretty, so so pretty.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So pretty. Do you have anything else you liked? That's
- 16:30Speaker 1: about it? All right, what did you wish for?
- 16:33Speaker 2: This might have just been me, Like I like to
- 16:36Speaker 2: watch things with subtitles, and I watched this the night
- 16:39Speaker 2: that it was on, and I can't put subtitles on
- 16:42Speaker 2: my direct TV anyway. I had a really hard time
- 16:45Speaker 2: understanding Maggie's lines. At one point, I thought like she
- 16:49Speaker 2: was keeping her teeth clenched in just moving her lips.
- 16:53Speaker 2: But that wasn't it. I don't know what. I don't
- 16:56Speaker 2: know if she talks too fast or what it is.
- 16:58Speaker 2: But like, I'm so focused like reading her lips because
- 17:01Speaker 2: I cannot figure out what she's saying half the time.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Oh no, I don't know.
- 17:06Speaker 2: You didn't notice that.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I didn't.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it might just be me because I can't hear anything, so.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I usually have to watch with subtitles as well. This
- 17:16Speaker 1: one I did not, so I wished for two things.
- 17:18Speaker 1: The first was Ryan Pavey's character. Darren has a little
- 17:24Speaker 1: bit of a secret that we don't know about, and
- 17:26Speaker 1: he has some he's getting over kind of the oh,
- 17:32Speaker 1: what's the word, I'm leaving where he had a failed
- 17:34Speaker 1: run on Broadway and that has kind of damaged his confidence.
- 17:41Speaker 1: So we see he wears this rubber band that he
- 17:44Speaker 1: kind of snaps to kind of bring him back into
- 17:46Speaker 1: the moment, and we know he has some sort of
- 17:48Speaker 1: secret thing happening that Maggie thinks is a girlfriend, but
- 17:51Speaker 1: of course we know is not that, but we don't
- 17:53Speaker 1: know what it is. And I thought that it was
- 17:58Speaker 1: he was going to therapy. I thought that the person
- 18:00Speaker 1: he's talking to was his therapist. I thought they were
- 18:03Speaker 1: going to say, like, you know, he needed a little
- 18:06Speaker 1: therapy to get through this rejection, to get through this
- 18:08Speaker 1: loss of confidence, to you know, get back to who
- 18:10Speaker 1: he was. And when we found out it was an
- 18:12Speaker 1: improv class, I was like, really, I know the therapy
- 18:18Speaker 1: angle would have been better. It would have like show,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you know, highlighted that mental health is important. And it's
- 18:26Speaker 1: okay to go to therapy and talk to somebody about whatever,
- 18:30Speaker 1: So it doesn't always need to be a major crisis situation, right,
- 18:34Speaker 1: Like this was a great confidence and he needed a
- 18:36Speaker 1: little help to get back to himself. I really thought
- 18:39Speaker 1: that was the direction that they were going, and I
- 18:41Speaker 1: was disappointed that it was improv.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Hire us hall park cool right to a movie. I
- 18:50Speaker 2: wish for it. Let me just one more thing I
- 18:52Speaker 2: would like to add. I wished that, and this is
- 18:58Speaker 2: just one of those Hallmark tropes, is that, like the
- 19:01Speaker 2: ex is coming back into town and she's worried, and
- 19:04Speaker 2: like they let it kind of go as the movie
- 19:07Speaker 2: went on, but like you know, when they like were
- 19:10Speaker 2: pitching that Darren should come back to the show, and
- 19:13Speaker 2: she got all like, I don't, you know, I just
- 19:16Speaker 2: don't do that. Why can't we just be adults?
- 19:19Speaker 1: Although if you did date for three years, do you
- 19:21Speaker 1: really want to work together? I ended, yeah, yeah.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I mean maybe because he dumped her so she might
- 19:29Speaker 2: feel uncomfortable. Whatever, I don't I'm just tired of.
- 19:31Speaker 1: It, right right, She rallied quickly, But yes, I hear that.
- 19:36Speaker 1: The last thing I wished for I just wrote jokes
- 19:39Speaker 1: something to move the pace a little faster, funny montage.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Just I needed a little more snappiness to this movie,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and I didn't get it.
- 19:47Speaker 2: It needed some omph, like something like I needed to
- 19:50Speaker 2: be more invested in Darren sane on the show, or
- 19:54Speaker 2: the show being canceled or something.
- 19:57Speaker 1: It was just there for me. It was almost there.
- 20:01Speaker 1: It had so many pieces of the puzzle I just needed.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I needed them to have more of like a funny
- 20:06Speaker 1: banter as opposed to like, Oh, we're good friends and
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'm going to support everything you do. Even though I
- 20:10Speaker 1: liked that, I kind of would have enjoyed a little
- 20:14Speaker 1: more back and forth.
- 20:16Speaker 2: If you're with somebody for three years, you got inside
- 20:18Speaker 2: jokes right that they could like, yeah, illustrate, Yeah, I
- 20:22Speaker 2: totally agree.
- 20:24Speaker 1: How about did you see that?
- 20:27Speaker 2: All right? I have a few. There was a lot
- 20:32Speaker 2: of purple in this movie.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Oh that's so funny. Okay, go ahead.
- 20:36Speaker 2: In one scene, Darren and his agent are having lunch
- 20:38Speaker 2: and they both are wearing purple shirts, which was bizarre
- 20:42Speaker 2: to me, and then a dude in the background also
- 20:45Speaker 2: wearing a purple shirt. And then it happened again later
- 20:48Speaker 2: where Maggie's wearing a purple jumpsuit, right, and then her
- 20:53Speaker 2: and Darren are both wearing like purple in one shot,
- 20:56Speaker 2: but then in the next shot his shirt looks more gray,
- 20:59Speaker 2: but it still was like when they were together, it
- 21:02Speaker 2: looked like they were wearing purple. So I was like,
- 21:04Speaker 2: what is the significance of purple in this movie?
- 21:07Speaker 1: If any Well, that's funny that you say that, because
- 21:10Speaker 1: it wasn't the purple that stood out to me, but
- 21:12Speaker 1: it was the color coordination. Because there's that scene that
- 21:16Speaker 1: you talked about with Darren and his agent, then later
- 21:18Speaker 1: Darren and Maggie, and then there's a later scene where
- 21:21Speaker 1: Darren and his agent are on the phone and they're
- 21:23Speaker 1: both wearing tan shirts. Darren has a tan shirt and
- 21:26Speaker 1: his agent has a tan blazer on. They're not in
- 21:28Speaker 1: the same place, but they're flipping back and forth from
- 21:31Speaker 1: their scenes. So there was this color coordination between two
- 21:35Speaker 1: characters in a scene that happened, and I just noticed
- 21:39Speaker 1: it and thought it was interesting that they would make
- 21:41Speaker 1: them match like that.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, I wonder if there was I mean,
- 21:46Speaker 2: I'm sure that's somebody's job or was it a mistake,
- 21:49Speaker 2: because do you want your two characters wearing the same color.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Well, I it could have been accidental, because I will
- 21:57Speaker 1: often accidentally match my daughter and I like, all, put
- 22:00Speaker 1: on my outfit and then if she needs help picking
- 22:02Speaker 1: something out, and it's truly accidental. There's nothing I'm doing, like, oh,
- 22:06Speaker 1: I'm wearing stripes, she's gonna wear stripes. And we leave
- 22:08Speaker 1: the house and I look and I'm like, both wearing
- 22:10Speaker 1: a purple sure, or both wearing blue and white stripes.
- 22:12Speaker 1: It's not intentional. And so maybe their brain is, you know,
- 22:16Speaker 1: pulling these outfits and they happen to pull. I don't know,
- 22:21Speaker 1: but it was noticeable.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, do you have any I have a
- 22:26Speaker 2: couple more, but I'm gonna let you go.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Well, I thought it was odd that she just shows
- 22:30Speaker 1: up at his house to talk to him in the
- 22:31Speaker 1: first scene, Like she doesn't even call him. She's like,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I'm just gonna walk into your backyard and ask you
- 22:35Speaker 1: to come be on the show. And of course they
- 22:38Speaker 1: used to be in a relationship, but I thought, for
- 22:39Speaker 1: someone who was so nervous about him returning, right, would
- 22:44Speaker 1: you not have started moving a phone a text, a text,
- 22:49Speaker 1: because that's where I would have started.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Yeah, a text would a bit better. And I like
- 22:55Speaker 2: those movies at show, like the texts. You know what
- 22:58Speaker 2: I'm talking about. Yeah, let's do that again, Homark call
- 23:01Speaker 2: us we have ideas. There was one scene where he's
- 23:04Speaker 2: talking to his agent about his crops and he's talking
- 23:07Speaker 2: about how he has grown chardonnay grapes and then he says,
- 23:11Speaker 2: quote shardena grapes, which, by the way, are fruit.
- 23:17Speaker 1: At the beginning of that conversation, his agent is like
- 23:20Speaker 1: something something, you're vegetables.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Okay, And then in the next scene it's the same
- 23:25Speaker 2: They have like the tomato vegetable fruit joke between Maggie
- 23:30Speaker 2: and him. So it's like, but okay, now that makes
- 23:35Speaker 2: sense because it was fully out of context. For me.
- 23:37Speaker 1: I was like, of course grapes are fruit.
- 23:40Speaker 2: However, I did do some googling about it, and some
- 23:44Speaker 2: people categorize grapes as berries.
- 23:48Speaker 1: But I was like that aren't berries fruit?
- 23:52Speaker 2: Yes they are, But I was like, yeah, this is
- 23:54Speaker 2: a real reach if we're getting down into like the
- 23:56Speaker 2: minutia of like you know what I mean whatever, anyway,
- 24:02Speaker 2: I don't care, I hear you. I just was like
- 24:05Speaker 2: over the stupid like is it a fruit or a
- 24:08Speaker 2: vegetable joke.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Yes, I agree they took it too far. His crops
- 24:13Speaker 1: were a boring plot point. Like that's a one line,
- 24:15Speaker 1: it does not need to be a callback on multiple
- 24:18Speaker 1: times in the movie. Agree.
- 24:19Speaker 2: And plus Ryan Paby in real life like mixed jewelry,
- 24:23Speaker 2: I think so, Like, why didn't they have him doing
- 24:25Speaker 2: that right?
- 24:26Speaker 1: And he even had a jewelry making setup in Quarantine.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Did you see the photo of it? Yes?
- 24:32Speaker 2: I did so.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Yes, that's a much better idea. But yeah, I apparently
- 24:38Speaker 1: they found that charming. Oh look this single dude. By
- 24:42Speaker 1: the way, can you even grow grapes in la I
- 24:44Speaker 1: don't know, although.
- 24:46Speaker 2: A maybe in Malibu if he was supposed to be
- 24:49Speaker 2: living like by the ocean, the humidity or the salt
- 24:53Speaker 2: in the airs.
- 24:54Speaker 1: My neighbor has a grape vine, So I don't know
- 24:55Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. So okay, maybe you can they
- 24:58Speaker 1: shout an a grapes. I have no idea that's a fruit.
- 25:02Speaker 1: All I know is they attract those big giant beetles
- 25:06Speaker 1: that I can't stand.
- 25:07Speaker 2: It's your hair that attracts those, not those grapes.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Well, they come over, they come for the grapes, and
- 25:13Speaker 1: they stay for the hair, All right? Do you have
- 25:14Speaker 1: anything else for to just see that? No?
- 25:17Speaker 2: But I do have a question.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Please.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Is it normal for a head writer to transition to producer?
- 25:24Speaker 1: I don't know? Okay, should I ask my friend?
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 25:28Speaker 1: Ask your friend.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I'm curious, is she I have one more one last?
- 25:32Speaker 2: Did you see that Darren had a welcome back cake?
- 25:35Speaker 2: And it literally looked like somebody printed out welcome Back
- 25:38Speaker 2: Darren on a piece of paper and slapped it on.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Top of a Costco cake. Totally.
- 25:43Speaker 2: It was not like one of those edible printable things.
- 25:45Speaker 2: It looked like the computer paper. It was awful. Yeawful.
- 25:49Speaker 1: The cakes in these movies need some help. Speaking of which,
- 25:52Speaker 1: I follow a woman on TikTok who is a prop
- 25:59Speaker 1: person and she like hashtags like Hallmark movie and she's
- 26:02Speaker 1: making like props for you can tell like Christmas movies
- 26:06Speaker 1: right now, and it's very interesting. She's like, this food
- 26:08Speaker 1: is fake, but we throw in some real food because
- 26:10Speaker 1: otherwise people would be able to tell if we didn't
- 26:11Speaker 1: have like a combination of real food and fake food. Okay,
- 26:16Speaker 1: By the way, I said to my friend, is it
- 26:18Speaker 1: normal for a writer to also be a producer on
- 26:20Speaker 1: a soap asking for Hallmark movie continuity, and his first
- 26:23Speaker 1: response is three crying laughing emojis, and now I got
- 26:26Speaker 1: dot dots.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Of this is a real time text, yes your Days
- 26:32Speaker 2: of your Life? That I do have one more. It's
- 26:38Speaker 2: about that rubber band trick that he was doing. I mean,
- 26:40Speaker 2: if they had been boyfriend girlfriend for a long period
- 26:43Speaker 2: of time, don't you think she'd know this trick of his?
- 26:46Speaker 1: But I think it was recent. It was after his
- 26:49Speaker 1: failed okay, fine, that he could have picked up from
- 26:53Speaker 1: a therapist, right right, right. And it's funny that they
- 26:57Speaker 1: did that in this movie because I just was reading
- 26:59Speaker 1: a book where one of the characters did that they
- 27:01Speaker 1: had had some trauma and they did that to distract themselves.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Like to oh, well, maybe the writer of this movie
- 27:07Speaker 2: read that book too.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Perhaps, it says, not impossible. Not very common either, though
- 27:13Speaker 1: at one point Tom Langan was both head writer and
- 27:16Speaker 1: co executive producer of Days of Our Lives. All right, so,
- 27:20Speaker 1: but not common though. Okay, oh, we have to rate
- 27:24Speaker 1: this movie, my gosh, Okay.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Alright, alright, alright, I'm ready. I give this two point
- 27:31Speaker 2: seven five starts.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Oh I was gonna give it two and a half.
- 27:33Speaker 2: So oh well, I really struggled because I was like
- 27:37Speaker 2: those other movies I gave in the three and I
- 27:39Speaker 2: like those movies, previous Summer Nights movies.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Huh yeah it was.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Below A three.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Definitely a three. Yeah. Next week is a sweet pecan summer.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Not looking forward to this one.
- 27:54Speaker 1: No interesting. I like that it has a full non
- 27:58Speaker 1: white family. I think we're maybe gonna get more of
- 28:01Speaker 1: the family story than the love story. I'm hoping, yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 1: which I like, kind of about their pecan business farm.
- 28:08Speaker 1: So I like that. I'm not super into like the
- 28:14Speaker 1: actual I don't know.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I wasn't drawn into love story, but I'm like, tell
- 28:17Speaker 1: me about the family, tell me about your pecan situation.
- 28:21Speaker 1: There are two movies left, guys, So we're coming in hot.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Then it's fall, then it's Christmas.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Wait wait, wait, please tell me we're gonna get a
- 28:28Speaker 2: little break, a one week or two week break after
- 28:32Speaker 2: Summer Nights before fall.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I hope. I'm so sorry to tell you shit. The
- 28:37Speaker 1: Fall Harvest programming will run from Saturday, September eleventh through
- 28:41Speaker 1: Saturday October sixteenth. Okay, and the very first movie. You
- 28:49Speaker 1: are correct, maybe I did tell you. This does feature
- 28:52Speaker 1: Tyler Hines Woo, whoa.
- 28:55Speaker 2: My number two favorite guy on homework. So you must
- 28:58Speaker 2: have had some insight scoop some weeks ago somewhere something
- 29:03Speaker 2: You must be reading that Hallmark Gossip Rags or something megan.
- 29:07Speaker 1: So we go straight from Summer Nights into Fall Harvest.
- 29:10Speaker 1: And my guess is we go straight from Fall Harvest
- 29:12Speaker 1: into Yeah, what's Christmas called? Count down to Christmas? Oh
- 29:19Speaker 1: my gosh, I'm a convert.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I know all the details, guys, I know them all.
