- 0:00The day man went into space could be said to be a modern
- 0:04myth, a legend that arises to meet the spirit of the age in
- 0:09which it is born. But what could be some of the
- 0:11Grim realities behind the exploration of the cosmic void.
- 0:17Speculation has long existed that early experimental flights
- 0:21claimed, the lives of more than a few humans.
- 0:24The names of which have never graced headlines.
- 0:27Who were these unknown people? Who Lost to the dangers of
- 0:31venturing into the heavens today, we will be discovering
- 0:35the Unexplained and investigating the story of the
- 0:39lost cosmonauts here on mystery archives.
- 1:02On October 4th 1957 the Soviet Union launched history's.
- 1:07First artificial satellite known as Sputnik its launch sparked.
- 1:12The Inferno that was known as the Space Race.
- 1:16The Cold War heated up as the United States and the Soviet
- 1:20Union rushed to see who could conquer the New Frontier first.
- 1:24Russia, once again, scored a win, when Yuri Gagarin became
- 1:28the first man in space and 1961, but was he truly the first or
- 1:34merely the first to survive the trip?
- 1:39In 1959, a Russian magazine published information and photos
- 1:44of three men parachuting. One of the men was killed when
- 1:48his suit depressurized after hitting his head, another
- 1:52vanished and no information on the third man was ever found.
- 1:56It was speculated that the men were testing high altitude
- 1:59equipment, a precursor to space exploration technology.
- 2:05In 1960, a Soviet rocket ignited on the launch pad and killed.
- 2:10At least 78 people that same year, science fiction, author,
- 2:15Robert Heinlein claimed that while traveling in the USSR, he
- 2:19met with army Cadets that said that there had recently been a
- 2:23space launch the capsule korabl Sputnik 1 suffered a mechanical
- 2:28failure when the guidance system steered it off course.
- 2:32As a result, it was stranded in orbit around her The general
- 2:36statement on behalf of the Soviets was that the capsule was
- 2:40part of an unmanned test flight. However, according to henlon,
- 2:44there may have been a cosmonaut inside in the 1960s, a Keel and
- 2:51his brother Giovanni. Battista released audio
- 2:54recordings. They had allegedly captured from
- 2:56Secret, Soviet flights One. Recording seemed to play the
- 3:00sounds of a suffocating cosmonaut.
- 3:19Listening to the static, the brothers, determined that
- 3:21another recording was an SOS moving away from Earth.
- 3:26One of the more famous and controversial recordings.
- 3:29Is that of a female Cosmonaut panicking before she apparently
- 3:33was killed upon re-entry, into the Earth's atmosphere?
- 4:05In total, the brothers release nine recordings over the course
- 4:08of four years. Each capturing a different
- 4:11scenario of cosmonauts participating in space, flights
- 4:15that either succeeded or failed these audio recordings.
- 4:20However, while being one of the main pieces of evidence cited
- 4:23for the lost cosmonauts, have long been claimed to be a hoax.
- 4:29One objection is the fact that the female cosmonauts spoke
- 4:32extremely bad Russian, and at the brothers sisters, were
- 4:36learning Russian at the time, which would have made her a more
- 4:39than likely candidate to be the voice heard on the tape.
- 4:43Another problem is that in spite of Highly sophisticated radio,
- 4:47surveillance stations in Europe at the time somehow.
- 4:51The brothers, were the only ones who managed to capture this
- 4:54extremely valuable information about Soviet space operations.
- 4:59Being said, these recordings are only a small piece of the puzzle
- 5:03as more high-profile flights occurred which are more
- 5:06difficult to dismiss. Vladimir.
- 5:13I lie usually was among the most esteemed and venerated men in
- 5:17the Soviet Union during the 1960s son of the Soviet aircraft
- 5:22designer. Sergei a lesion Vladimir was
- 5:25among the most distinguished of Soviet test pilots.
- 5:29In 1959 he said the world altitude record when he reached
- 5:3430,000 meters in his silky 09 jet fighter in 1960.
- 5:39He received the hero of the Soviet Union medal for his high
- 5:43altitude and high speed test flights.
- 5:46Initially Vladimir was not a member of the Cosmonaut Corps
- 5:50when they were founded in 1959. Focusing more on gaining the
- 5:54world altitude record. He soon realized that any record
- 5:58of his would be crushed. This achievement of reaching the
- 6:01Earth's orbit possibly as a result of his father's political
- 6:05influence. Vladimir was allowed to join.
- 6:08The original cosmonauts a year after the group was formed after
- 6:12an intensive training program, he became the most talented
- 6:15cosmonauts of the group 1961 photos show, Vladimir
- 6:20undergoing, space flight training, one of his colleagues
- 6:24had been launched into space and secret on February, the 2nd of
- 6:281961. But something went horribly
- 6:31wrong the early stages of the flight which rendered the pilot
- 6:35unconscious unable to return to the Earth until the 17th orbit
- 6:40in order to avoid a forced landing on foreign soil, the
- 6:44Cosmonaut lost his life in orbit.
- 6:47Vladimir was scheduled for the following flight with the fault
- 6:52that cost his fellow Cosmonaut, his life, having seemingly been
- 6:55fixed Vladimir boarded the rossio and launched into orbit
- 6:59on April 17th of 1961. According to reports something,
- 7:05again, went wrong for completing his first orbit, Vladimir lost
- 7:10Consciousness and stopped responding to radio calls from
- 7:13Mission Control. Do to Vladimir's high-profile an
- 7:17The Landing was attempted on the third orbit, the capsule
- 7:22touchdown in China, the normal process for vostok Landings
- 7:26involved. Injecting the pilot from the
- 7:28capsule at 20,000 feet with the pilot touching down with the
- 7:32parachute unfortunately. Since Vladimir was unconscious,
- 7:37he was unable to eject and sustained.
- 7:39Serious injuries Rhythm, see hit the ground.
- 7:43He was heard but alive gaining. The honor of being the first man
- 7:47to return alive from Corbin. The Chinese authorities
- 7:51hospitalized Vladimir and kept him in prison as a foreign
- 7:54intelligence agent for over a year.
- 7:58As a result of this word lead to that a manned space flight was
- 8:02ongoing and in the Soviets decided to launch the backup
- 8:06pilot. Yuri, Gagarin mere days later on
- 8:10April, the 12th. This historic Mission almost
- 8:14ended in tragedy at the time of deorbiting.
- 8:18The Descent capsule failed to disconnect from the service
- 8:21module. Luckily for Gary, the landing
- 8:24craft suddenly separated the maneuver occurred, nearly
- 8:28Minutes after the intended time which led to Yuri Landing in a
- 8:32remote area away from recovery teams.
- 8:35Vladimir would eventually return to the USSR where he continued
- 8:39his career, he would retire as a general of the Soviet Air Force
- 8:44but not everyone was so lucky. As The Echoes of rocket
- 8:52launches, and space Communications reverberate into
- 8:55silence, it's difficult to discern fact, from fiction, the
- 9:01line between myth and history can often become blurry and the
- 9:05space race is no different. Many researchers have asserted
- 9:09that. The supposed lost cosmonauts,
- 9:11are nothing more than speculation and rumor with no
- 9:15basis in reality in the 1980s, American journalist, James oberg
- 9:20Work research space disasters in the USSR.
- 9:24He found no evidence to support these theories since 1990 much
- 9:29previously restricted information has become available
- 9:32to the public Mark. Waid editor of the website
- 9:36encyclopedia astronautica said that the entire early history of
- 9:41the Soviet manned space program has been Declassified and we
- 9:45have piles of Memoirs of cosmonauts Engineers Etc, who
- 9:49participated Know who was in the original Cosmonaut team, who
- 9:53never flew was dismissed or was killed and ground tests.
- 9:58I'll ution was not one of. In spite of this, there is
- 10:02indeed confirmed evidence of the USSR covering up the death of a
- 10:06cosmonaut by the name of Valentin.
- 10:09Barda Nico. It was March 23rd of 1961, and
- 10:14Valentin was on the 10th day of a 15-day endurance.
- 10:17Experiment in the low pressure altitude chamber.
- 10:20At The Institute of biomedical problems and Moscow, the
- 10:25chamber's atmosphere was at at least fifty percent oxygen
- 10:29Valentin, had finished his work for the day and removed the
- 10:32biosensor from his body. While washing his skin with
- 10:35alcohol soaked cotton balls. A discarded cotton ball landed
- 10:39on an electric hot plate which he had been using to brew tea,
- 10:44the ball ignited and Valentin, struggled to smother the fire
- 10:47with his wool coveralls which burst into In the oxygen-rich
- 10:52air, due to the pressure difference, they took a doctor
- 10:56half an hour to open the chamber door Valentin, suffered
- 10:59third-degree Burns. All over his body Yuri Gagarin
- 11:03spent several hours at the hospital at the Death.
- 11:06Watch of the officer Valentin would die of shock, 16 hours
- 11:11later. Photographs of the original
- 11:13cosmonauts, would later be doctored in an attempt to erase
- 11:17his presence from history. A failed experiment that USSR
- 11:21could not afford to let into the public Consciousness in 1971.
- 11:26The crew of the Apollo 15, placed a plaque on the moon
- 11:29dedicated to the Fallen astronauts.
- 11:32Ballantine's name was not among Space is fascinated mankind
- 11:38since the days of the Cold War. A frontier of mystery danger,
- 11:43and Beauty captivating, the minds of past and present, but
- 11:47it is easy to forget the pile of bones that enabled us to reach
- 11:51the Stars. Many of the bones belong to
- 11:54people with homes families and names that in some cases might
- 11:59never have been remembered, their deaths were tragic.
- 12:03The ultimately the legend of the Lost cosmonauts, Birds bright as
- 12:07a rocket launching into the Eternal heavens.
- 12:13So what do you think of the loss cosmonauts?
