- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:12episodes four fifty nine and four sixty picking down to the time of battle,
- 0:18the Navy's strongest lineup in position and a vast fleet appears. Here come the
- 0:25white Beard Pirates. In these episodes, we find out that Ace and Loofy
- 0:33aren't actually related really. Oh and I guess that means that our guy isn't
- 0:43Lufy's grandpa either, just a grandpa in spirit. Welcome to spoil Me.
- 1:10Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much to
- 1:15Florian for commissioning this episode, and also for being extremely patient, because yesterday
- 1:21I attempted to do this recording and my computer just lost its entire mind and
- 1:26refused to even record, and I had to restore everything from a backup because
- 1:33it just essentially shut down on me entirely. So we're just gonna hope and
- 1:38pray that this whole recording goes through. Okay, fingers crossed. It looks
- 1:42good so far, and I just am hoping that I am not facing having
- 1:49to replace my computer already, because I feel like I sort of just got
- 1:52this one, even though I guess that was like four years ago. But
- 1:57anyway, so these episodes, you guys, what a what a surprising revelation
- 2:02this is. I can't get over to the lore behind who Lufy's like,
- 2:13I guess not lufy Ace's mother actually is, because it's not like she herself
- 2:22is so important plot wise. You know, her name is Rouge, which
- 2:28is very strange already, but the bit is supposed to be that she was
- 2:38able to keep herself from giving birth to Ace for twenty months I believe was
- 2:49the number that we were given. You guys, this is one of those
- 2:57things that I really enjoy just because it's so it's such a bizarre kind of
- 3:05thing to like include in the story. But it feels like a Greek myth
- 3:10or something. You know. I say Greek myth just because I automatically think
- 3:16Greek when I think myth, but it could be a myth from any tradition,
- 3:22culture or whatever. Because the idea of a woman just being able to
- 3:27like have total control over her own body in this sort of way that is
- 3:34the stuff of stories, and it's almost like a wishful thinking sort of thing.
- 3:38I think for a lot of us, like if only we could dictate
- 3:43what happened when that would be great. It would be so helpful to our
- 3:46lives in general, Like wouldn't it. You know? So I am cackling,
- 3:53and you know I had said how bizarre it was, and I have
- 4:01said this for other characters as well, but like once again acknowledging that Rouge
- 4:05is apparently not Lufy's mother unless she came back from the dead, which I
- 4:11wouldn't be surprised if she was. Like I held him in my roomb for
- 4:14twenty months, I finally gave birth, and then I died, but then
- 4:16I decided I didn't really feel like dying, so then I came back.
- 4:19Like if this woman has the kind of control she apparently does, I don't
- 4:25see why she can't just not die because she feels like she doesn't want to
- 4:29today. But uh, what I was where I was heading with this was
- 4:33just how bizarre I thought it was that Lufy's mother was really just not in
- 4:40the story, Like she's just not a person that is brought up. He
- 4:46doesn't seem to like think or ask about her, and nobody else asks either,
- 4:53And that also with like seeing the past for Zoro, he is we
- 5:00have no idea who either of his parents are. You know, for a
- 5:04lot of our characters, we do have that sort of background. We know
- 5:09it's going on with Usap and his father and who his father actually wand being,
- 5:14and that his mother died. I guess with Chopper, we just know
- 5:17that he was born to a regular family and then like ostracized once he got
- 5:24he ate the Devil Fruit because he was no longer a regular reindeer. And
- 5:30you know, we know Nami's story, and Soanji's is like one of the
- 5:35one that sort of aligns a little bit more with Zorro where you don't actually
- 5:41know who Sanji's parents are either. He was just like working on a ship
- 5:45that got taken over, and as far as who his parents were to allow
- 5:49him to work on this ship or anything, that's not a factor. So
- 5:54I do find it really interesting how many of our characters who are fight haven't
- 6:01got that kind of info on their background, But the ones that are like
- 6:08more grounded in reality in terms of what their abilities are, they do get
- 6:15a full story and a full backstory. So I don't know if that's like
- 6:23of any significance, the fact that it tends to be something that we don't
- 6:30hear or know about only when it's a person who is a complete badass,
- 6:36Like, is there a reason we haven't heard who any other parents are?
- 6:40Is it going to turn out that like Sangi, Zoro, and Lufi are
- 6:42actually all related? Surprise, surprise, you know, who knows? But
- 6:47I just really think it's funny that it's not something that anybody even asks about.
- 6:58It would be one thing if our friends didn't know, and they were
- 7:01just sort of like, yeah, you know, I don't know who my
- 7:03parents are, and I've never known, and my whole life, I've just
- 7:05grown up not knowing, and I'm used to not knowing, so it doesn't
- 7:12bother me anymore at this point. But it never really even comes up in
- 7:16conversation, And so I really wasn't like asking any further questions because I didn't
- 7:26think that the answers even existed. I was like, maybe he just doesn't
- 7:30want to consider it for the story because it's just not what he's focused on
- 7:36at all. It's simply a non factor. And then to find out that
- 7:42there's like this whole thing with Ace, and yet even when we find all
- 7:46this out, it doesn't tell us who Lufy's mother is. We still don't
- 7:51know that. All we know is that we can cross Ace's mother off the
- 7:59list and see that they are not actually related. So I, you know,
- 8:05I just want to stay out of the gate. I do not,
- 8:09for a moment believe that even if Lufy were to find out they're not related,
- 8:15that it would have any effect whatsoever on his mission to save Ace.
- 8:22Like it's not going to matter. Lufy has never cared about blood like he
- 8:26cares about Ace because of their history together, I think much more than he
- 8:33really gives a shit about like a familial aspect, And we saw the links
- 8:37that he went to save Robin even while she was actively rejecting him. So
- 8:43I don't believe that any of this information, were he to find out about
- 8:48it beforehand, will affect anything about what he's trying to do here. I
- 8:54think his mission will stay exactly the same. That's just how he rolls.
- 8:58Lufy is much more about like my personal relationship and my personal view of you
- 9:05as a person, and whether or not I think that you are just like
- 9:13a good soul. He really has a kind of absolutist while you seem like
- 9:20a good person to me, and so for that reason, you deserve defending
- 9:28and I'm here for that news For the record, Like I don't you guys
- 9:35know, I have said this on so many different shows. For myself,
- 9:39the idea that like family should come before everything has always been sort of a
- 9:43non starter. Family is an accident whoever's family you are born into. It's
- 9:50a complete cosmic like throw of the dice. And the idea that due to
- 9:58whomever you have and to be related to, you are like saddled with needing
- 10:03to be loyal to those people forever has never made any sense to me or
- 10:09resonated really at all, because they haven't done anything to deserve that other than
- 10:16be accidentally in a certain position on the family tree. So to me,
- 10:22that kind of like loyalty really has to be earned. And I have always
- 10:30found it bizarre when the only reason people can give for why you should help
- 10:33somebody is they're your cousin, they're your sister. If that's all you've got,
- 10:39that's really not anything that they like. That's not them deserving it,
- 10:46that's you just telling me what space they occupy in a relational chart, which
- 10:52is irrelevant. So I really align with Loufy in terms of the way he
- 11:01seems to move through the world and just be like I am going to essentially
- 11:07like what he does is sort of adopt people, you know, like either
- 11:11for the crew or in his heart. And I think that's like sort of
- 11:18the way that I have moved through the world myself in some ways with unsober
- 11:24or unspoiled. Sorry I was just editing on sober, but just the way
- 11:30that I have created a community of people that I personally care about, that
- 11:37have the same value system that I have, who are here by choice and
- 11:45who choose to support each other and be there for one another. I mean,
- 11:50it's really the same exact vibe, you know. And I fucking I
- 11:58don't care whether he finds out that Ace is or isn't related to him,
- 12:03because I don't think it will make a difference. If Lufy hasn't talked about
- 12:07his own family very much at all for the whole duration of the show upon
- 12:13which I am on episode four hundred and fifty nine, I don't think that's
- 12:20really a priority to him, you know, I just don't see that mattering.
- 12:26Oh my god, Florian says there are animals who can just stay pregnant.
- 12:31I'm sorry, excuse me. Okay, no, hold on, I
- 12:37am googling animals that can stay pregnant because I need to know. Oh oh
- 12:43oh wow, okay, first thing, swamp wallabies. Swamp wallabies have two
- 12:52uteruses, so they can conceive a new baby before birthing another. Why did
- 13:01nature do this to them so they essentially can be constantly pregnant? That seems
- 13:11really unfair. Like, I mean, I guess if you just live like
- 13:16that and you don't know anything else, you aren't aware that that sucks for
- 13:20you. But that just really is unlike. It also feels like nature was
- 13:26accelerating their growth rate, you know, like just or their population rate for
- 13:31some reason. And I really want to know why nature was so intent on
- 13:35swamp wallabies being fruitful and multiplying. It's also led me to a list of
- 13:46the long gestation periods of twelve different animals, not saying that they can stay
- 13:52pregnant, but it says the elephants are pregnant for eighteen to twenty two months,
- 13:58manatees thirteen months, camels thirteen to fifteen, drafts thirteen to fifteen,
- 14:05velvet worm fifteen, how weird, and rhinoceros fifteen to eighteen. Walrus fifteen
- 14:18to sixteen and whales and dolphins up to nineteen months. Huh, that is
- 14:28really interesting. How much of am a variance there is? Like not to
- 14:33say that in you know, the human gestation period there isn't a variance because
- 14:39it's not just at nine months, but these are variations of several months sometimes.
- 14:46And I really am curious about how, like do pre what's the word
- 14:56premature burrows count as a normal gestation period because premature birds are somewhat common.
- 15:03Is that just seen as like, you know, the human gestation periods are
- 15:09eight to nine months or seven to nine months, or is it considered premature
- 15:18for us because we haven't fully developed whereas these animals they just have a completely
- 15:22different like you know what I'm saying. Ooh, sharks spiny dogfish can carry
- 15:33young for two years, while basking sharks can do so for as long as
- 15:39three years. The frilled shark can wait three point five years before giving birth.
- 15:50I'm sorry, why does it say it can wait? See, this
- 15:54is the question I'm asking here, And they made that sound like it's voluntary.
- 16:00I just want to know, can you just decide that you're still pregnant,
- 16:03like you know what I'm saying, that's that's all. I just want
- 16:07a little bit more information about this. Some animals pause their own pregnancies.
- 16:17Okay, this is what I'm talking about. And this is from the University
- 16:19of Melbourne, so you know, Australia be crazy with their animals. More
- 16:26than one hundred and thirty species of mammal can pause their pregnancies between a couple
- 16:30of days and eleven months. In most species, it happens when the embryo
- 16:36is a tiny ball of about eighty cells before it attaches to the uterus.
- 16:41Ah, that's really fascinating. The record holder for pregnancy pause time is the
- 16:51Tamar wallaby, studied for its ability to put embryos on hold for up to
- 16:56eleven months. There are two main ways in which animals do this. I'm
- 17:03so sorry to get into this, you guys, but come on, this
- 17:06is really interesting, right is that just me? The first way is to
- 17:11mate soon after giving birth to have a backup pregnancy in case something happens to
- 17:15the newborn young. A stress of lactating triggers a pause that lasts during suckling,
- 17:22and the pregnancy restarts once the young leave. The second way is to
- 17:27pause every pregnancy until the time is right. Depending on the season, Minks
- 17:33mate at the start of March, but put the embryos on pause until after
- 17:37the spring equinox, when the days are longer. This ensures the young are
- 17:41born when conditions improve rather than winter. That is bonkers. Okay, that's
- 17:51great. I am very I'm feeling really satisfied with that information. We're gonna
- 17:55say that's what she did. She put it on pause and was just like,
- 18:00give it a minute. I mean, we see her in the in
- 18:03the episode talking to her stomach and saying not yet, not yet, branch,
- 18:10and she's not using any of the methods mentioned here. But I accept
- 18:15that just the sheer like conditions being unideal, not ideal. I don't think
- 18:22unideal is a word. I accept that. Oh my god, David Higgins
- 18:32says there are animal people we've met. Could Loofy's mom be one or part
- 18:37animal person? I love it, Wallaby, clearly, since they hold the
- 18:44record and it's eleven months. I mean, I guess again he's not actually
- 18:49related to Ace, and I'm having a lot of trouble getting that through my
- 18:52fucking head. Ace's mom part, Wallaby, that's what we'll do is you
- 18:59know, if it's an nine months term usually and she's able to wait for
- 19:03twenty months before she gives birth and a Wallaby's record was eleven months putting it
- 19:08on pause. That math exactly lines up. So we are saying that Ace's
- 19:14mother is a Wallaby person and she was waiting for conditions to improve, and
- 19:21that is canon. And I hope that everybody will please update the one Piece
- 19:26wiki with this crucial information. I will give you the links to the source
- 19:30from the University of Melbourne about this topic, So I hope that helps.
- 19:41Oh my god, Okay, okay, I'm like literally twenty minutes into this
- 19:47episode and I haven't even started to talk about what's actually happening on the show
- 19:52yet, So why don't, like, you know, I have, but
- 19:56not in order and not doing my summary thing that I'm trying to do here.
- 20:02So the first of these two episodes is really mostly about everybody like getting
- 20:08ready for this war that they believe is going to pop off and the ways
- 20:12in which they are reacting to the news that we're about to see some violence
- 20:18here. And there is a lot of preparation going on both among the people
- 20:25who live in like the surrounding area as well as the families of the Marines.
- 20:32And we also see Ace being brought up to the area where he's going
- 20:38to be questioned in front of everybody. This is actually a really unusual sequence.
- 20:47So he's thinking back to like his childhood with Loofy, and that's the
- 20:55only sound like or dialogue we get. And this whole section where they're leading
- 21:00him up is silent except for the sound of footsteps, the sound of the
- 21:07chains clinking, you know, all of the ambient noise. But there's no
- 21:12music and there's very very little talking. And it was actually quite well done.
- 21:18I felt like it was like it added a lot of tension to the
- 21:25moment and really kind of made you stop and feel like there's something extremely significant
- 21:30that's about to happen. I love when they take him out of his cell.
- 21:37They bring him to the base of this staircase that he literally cannot see
- 21:44the top of, and they make him put shoes on, and I'm really
- 21:49curious, folks, is it is. It's like not a shoe wearer.
- 21:56I feel like the times that I have seen I don't work. I feel
- 22:00like he was always barefoot, and there was a sense when he's made to
- 22:06put these shoes on, like this was a significant action on their part to
- 22:10get him to wear these, or that they asked him to wear them.
- 22:14I don't know if it's because he can like use his abilities with his feet,
- 22:19because I am pretty sure we've seen that before, So maybe that's why
- 22:23he tends to be barefoot usually, and that's why they're like, yeah,
- 22:26you're not doing that with us. But I just wanted to point it out
- 22:30because, like I said, it just felt as if it was focused on
- 22:34in such a way that it's meaningful. Oh my god, thank you,
- 22:41Florian. He's giving me the names of warlords Draculee, me Hawk, Hawkey,
- 22:45Bartholomew, Kuma, the Tyrant, Bola Hancock, Pirate Empress, Don
- 22:52Quixote, Don Flamingo, Geko Moria, thank you. Also not here,
- 22:57Blackbeard and Jimbei first Son of the Sea. Yeah we do. We see
- 23:02Jimbae in this episode at some point, but I don't and I don't think
- 23:08Boa turns up in these in these two episodes, but we see a lot
- 23:15of people in brief flashes, so she may have been here and I just
- 23:18sort of missed it. I think the shoes are a religious thing. You
- 23:22don't send people into death barefoot because they have to travel to heaven slash hell.
- 23:27Oh but that is fascinating, man. I think our whole, like
- 23:37the our human impulse to like create an afterlife, whatever that may look like,
- 23:45for whatever culture in and then have these like rituals that we require to
- 23:51help them with this imaginary after life. I say imaginary with the full acknowledgment.
- 23:55I don't know that they're imaginary. Maybe somebody is right, doesn't really
- 23:59matter, though. It's just really interesting how we'll come up with all kinds
- 24:02of things where we're just like, well, you need to give them the
- 24:03coins so that they can pay the ferrymen to cross the river. Like,
- 24:10we really added so much bureaucracy into death, even when you're dead, you
- 24:15can't get away with it. It just feels like, couldn't we have spent
- 24:18that energy on something that was a little less of a bummer. But yeah,
- 24:25so he has to climb these stairs, which I don't mind telling you
- 24:30kids, I would just have had they would have had to add a couple
- 24:33extra days on to my projected date of death because I was I would have
- 24:40to pitch a tent and rest for hours after probably going about a quarter of
- 24:45the way here. And when we go into the towns and stuff, people
- 24:52are talking about whether or not white Beards even coming, like they haven't seen
- 24:56any sight of his ships. And we find out why that is a little
- 25:03bit later, but they're sort of thinking, maybe this is much ado about
- 25:08nothing, you know, And we see people at the market and whatnot.
- 25:12One of them is saying, isn't white Beard a little too old for war?
- 25:18And somebody else is like, yeah, I mean, do the math.
- 25:22If he's been tearing shit up since before the Great Pirate era and we
- 25:26haven't seen his name in headlines for a while, he's probably not up to
- 25:30it. And then this woman who is selling fruit in another spot, she's
- 25:34like, they have manned the entire navy headquarters with their fleet, and even
- 25:41broad in the elites they know this is serious and they wouldn't do that for
- 25:45no reason, So just to watch, and I do love when they're like,
- 25:52what do you think is going to happen? And she just says,
- 25:55how the hell am I supposed to know? She has no patience for these
- 25:57guys, which I sympathize with on it, and they're also just wondering in
- 26:06general whether or not, like there's a point to this. White Beard is
- 26:12for a lot of people just kind of a legend, and they don't really
- 26:18know what he's capable of. And it seems like the might of the Marines
- 26:22is not something that you want to fuck with, so like it's possible that
- 26:27he has dramatically underestimated the situation, or again that he's like past his prime,
- 26:34maybe that he won't be able to muster enough people to come with him.
- 26:41And you know, some folks are talking about how like Navy Headquarters is
- 26:47in ruins. And there's this dude with a pipe, a tattooed head,
- 26:53hoop, earrings, and tiny sunglasses, and I don't know who he is,
- 27:00but he is an entire vibe and I really kind of hope to see
- 27:04him again because he's just telling it like it is and seems to be like,
- 27:10I don't have time for everybody out here, doubting that this dude is
- 27:15somebody that deserves respect, and just there's a sort of like quality to him
- 27:21that feels very irritated. And I really enjoyed the look of him along with
- 27:26everything. He almost looks like a genie. It might be the earrings,
- 27:32but uh so. Yeah. Then we go to this like frozen area and
- 27:37I know that it says in different spots exactly where we are, but forgive
- 27:42me, the way that the subtitles work on this is a little difficult to
- 27:47see at times. But yeah, there's a bar owner who's like, I'm
- 27:52not opening today. There's an execution happening, and these other two guys are
- 27:56like, are you kidding me? You just sell us a bottle to go?
- 27:59Then why do you why are you going to be acting like we should
- 28:02just go without drinking today? And a part of me did kind of feel
- 28:06like a day when there's about to be an execution seems like it would just
- 28:10be good business to be open. I feel like you're kind of guaranteed business
- 28:17when everybody's thinking about their own mortality or just kind of getting hype to see
- 28:21violence and death, you know. And there's some little kids who are singing
- 28:27like white Beard, white Beard, He's so mean, he's so feared,
- 28:33as they're doing a jumping like a jump rope. All right, look,
- 28:38let's get one thing straight. When kids play jump rope or clapping games and
- 28:45they include the name of a specific like person. They don't say boring,
- 28:55weak ass shit like he's so mean, he's so feared. That rhyme would
- 29:03be more like white Beard. White Beard, he will strangle you to death
- 29:10and your neck will be sheared. You will have your face pressed to a
- 29:18metal plate and seared. You get very graphic with this. Weird you guys
- 29:25know what I'm talking about. Children's like rhymes are weirdly grim and like sometimes
- 29:33gruesome and gory in a way that's extremely upsetting to adults. But as a
- 29:38kid, you don't even think about it as you're just saying the lyrics that
- 29:42you learned, you know. So I really wanted them to like kick it
- 29:47up a notch with that. It's a brief thing. He's so mean,
- 29:49he's so feared, and then we cut to another person talking, so that's
- 29:53all we get. But I really felt like we could have been a lot
- 29:57more hardcore with it. Like little kids love violence. They love it.
- 30:06It's like because they don't have any context for it, So to them,
- 30:10it's genuinely funny because they don't see in their mind's eye what that would really
- 30:15look like. What they imagine is something much morekint, like a cartoon,
- 30:21but I feel like I now want to write some sort of rhyme about white
- 30:26Beard and have that be another thing that I add to the canon of this
- 30:33show. So, yeah, you know, there's a woman who I believe
- 30:38is meant to be a nun, and she's praying and just asking for help
- 30:42getting through these terrible times. We always think we're in the worst times.
- 30:49And let's see on the island of Marine Ford, home of Navy headquarters,
- 30:55there lies a large city primarily populated by navy families, but not today,
- 31:02and we see that everything is closed up and there's just like stray cats wandering
- 31:07around and not a soul to be seen. They were all evacuated, which
- 31:14makes sense. I wonder where they went. I'm not sure if we actually
- 31:18know that or if it's being told to anybody. It says at the evacuation
- 31:23site on the Sabode Archipelago. Oh the displaced, that's where it is.
- 31:30They're watching on monitors at Sabodi. Okay, I forgot, so they did
- 31:34tell us. But yeah, so everybody's watching this, and it's a really
- 31:41fascinating thing that this execution is such a what's the word I want? Spectacle?
- 31:51I mean yes, but that's not exactly what I mean. But that's
- 31:53it that it is of so much interest to so many people, and of
- 32:01course, like the reason for that being that it's probably going to initiate a
- 32:08war, and that's what everybody is sort of watching for. But I'm just
- 32:14trying to think if there was a moment and I'm sure there was in real
- 32:21history where something like this was sort of teetering, that it wasn't an accidental
- 32:27thing where you know, somebody gets like shot and no one was ready for
- 32:34it, and all of a sudden everything kicks off because we're all reacting.
- 32:37This is a planned execution with a expectation that this particular opposing side is going
- 32:45to show up, and everyone is waiting to see if it's going to be
- 32:50as bad as they are expecting it to be. And there's that element of
- 32:54preparation and preparedness that I'm really like wondering, have we ever been in a
- 33:02place like this where we know probably if something is followed through on that it's
- 33:07going to cause absolute fucking chaos, And so we're just geared up and ready
- 33:15for some really life changing events to potentially pop off afterward, and you know,
- 33:23anybody listening who knows of something like, give me a shout, because
- 33:28I'm really curious about I'm not talking about we have some cops in riot gear
- 33:34because we suspect some people are going to be unhappy. That's different. That's
- 33:37a much smaller scale thing. We're looking at an actual war that they're preparing
- 33:43for here, you know, forgive me eys. If you can see pipin
- 33:49or if you can hear him, he is a little bit restless. But
- 33:52it's all right, buddy, I'll take you to the park after this.
- 33:53Everything will be great. So I gotta speed things along. I spent way
- 33:58too much time talking about animals, and I don't regret a second of it.
- 34:01But also I just need to be responsible a podcaster at this point.
- 34:07But some of what Ace is thinking about when he's remembering his time with Loofy
- 34:12is telling Loufy the only way to live life is without any regrets, which
- 34:16is the kind of thing that a child would say, because they do not
- 34:21understand living life with regrets is a requirement to being a better person. And
- 34:25you can quote me on that. If you don't have any regrets about how
- 34:29you've lived your life, I don't want to know you, because you sound
- 34:31like a psychopath. Everybody should have regrets because you grow and look back at
- 34:37who you used to be and go luge, oh god. And if you
- 34:42aren't looking back at your former self with a grimace of horror at times,
- 34:49you probably haven't grown enough. And that signals to me that you don't have
- 34:52a lot of self awareness or aren't a great person. So just fyi,
- 34:58he's dead wrong about this, but it is the sort of thing that a
- 35:00child would say. And meanwhile, like, guys, all of this is
- 35:06happening. He's still climbing these fucking stairs. It takes so long. My
- 35:09god, Oh my god, Pippin sorry that was so loud. He startled
- 35:16me playing with his bone. So as this is all, you know,
- 35:23beginning to finally come to a head, he's going through the doors and everybody
- 35:28is ready to like see ace. We have Loofy and the rest of the
- 35:35crew that are on the ship and they are trying to get through the gates
- 35:40of justice and they're being told you're never going to get through. You're just
- 35:45going to chill out here in the tub current and it's not going to even
- 35:50matter that you came. And then we have this wild sequence where the gates
- 35:57begin opening and nobody can figure out why, and Buggy is just taking credit
- 36:02for it, pretending that he is opening them with his mind. And I
- 36:07admit, you guys, this cracked me the fuck up. I love that
- 36:12he's like pretending he's doing it, but it's not because he saw that they
- 36:15were going to open. He's like and had an inkling and prepped for it.
- 36:20It seems like it was sort of he saw them starting to open and
- 36:23decided, oh, I'm going to pretend this is all me. And I'm
- 36:28really uh like enjoying how he's doing it, you know, putting on this
- 36:32little performance, but then thinking to himself, like under his breath, I
- 36:37wonder why they're opening, Like genuinely, I'm gonna, you know, completely
- 36:40take advantage of this moment. Don't get me wrong, but I don't understand
- 36:44what's going on here. So at this point we have Garp who he goes
- 36:52in another direction and we get the guy Sengoku is his name. I think
- 36:57the woman's the seagull on his head, and he is the one who turns
- 37:01up, which everybody is a little bit surprised by. Evidently they thought Garp
- 37:06was going to be the one to take care of this, but he gets
- 37:10a snail, and then he stands beside Ace and begins to project his voice
- 37:16out to everybody in the audience, and he says that I have some information
- 37:22that you all need to hear. And this man is Portcus d Ace,
- 37:28and the significance of his impending demise is more profound than you may realize.
- 37:34And we go to Garp and he is sweating, and this woman who's like
- 37:43her name is Suru. I think I don't know if we've met her before.
- 37:46She looks vaguely familiar, but she's reassuring him that none of this is
- 37:52his fault. And I was thinking, like, why would this be his
- 37:58fault exactly? You know, I'm thinking that he raised the two of them,
- 38:01But I guess that's just sort of the thing that you say when a
- 38:06parent like is likely to take responsibility for the way their kid turned out.
- 38:12And this is when Sengoku says, Ace, I want you to tell everybody
- 38:16who your father was, and Ace says, the name of my father is
- 38:22Whitebeard. And I assumed that this was a like, I'm loyal only to
- 38:34him, and I think that's the way that Ace intends it in this moment.
- 38:40But I believe in this that he still believes his father to be what's
- 38:52his name, the serpent, what's his name? The dragon? The dragon?
- 38:55Right? Did he believe that was the reality of who his father is
- 39:04news to him as well? Because yeah, this is when they say,
- 39:09we have spent a long time researching like where you've come from, and we
- 39:16went after all the children in this particular like stretch of time that we're going
- 39:23to be born, and we couldn't find you. And your mother went to
- 39:30great lengths to hide you. She performed a miracle that could come from only
- 39:34the love of a mother. She was able to keep from giving birth to
- 39:42you for twenty months and misled the navy and the world about who your parentage
- 39:50is. You were from Battelia and your mother's name was port Kiss d Rouge.
- 40:00And it turns out that his father is Goldie Roger. And it looks
- 40:12to me like Ace didn't know. There's just an expression on his face that
- 40:17I think I couldn't tell, like he is this shock or is this him
- 40:22being enraged that they're telling everybody? And I think it's just sheer shock.
- 40:29Let's see, oh, Florence's Ace knows Roger was his dad. He however,
- 40:32states that white Beard is his true dad, so he did know,
- 40:37okay, because it felt like when they say it, his eyes grow wide
- 40:40in a way that it seemed a shock, you know. But yeah,
- 40:46so everybody, of course is just like, oh, he's related to like
- 40:52a legendary pirate. Now all the fuss they're making about executing him makes all
- 41:00whole lot more sense. And that's the first of these two episodes. It
- 41:05takes a really long time to get there, and it ends right there with
- 41:09everybody standing around being like, wait, what. But the next episode is
- 41:17really just the sort of animation of the story we were just told. So
- 41:24there's not a whole lot more that gets revealed there than what we already had
- 41:30seen, except for the fact that it turns out Garp was asked by Roger
- 41:40to take Ace in and raise him because if he pretended Ace was his kid,
- 41:46then nobody would go after him and it would ensure he survived. And
- 41:52Garp is just such a decent dude that even though this guy is like a
- 41:59felon, a wanted criminal on death row, he's like, yeah, but
- 42:04that's not the child the infant child's fault, and no, I don't want
- 42:07to be party to a group of people that would willingly murder a child just
- 42:14because of who their parent was. So okay, yeah, I'll help you
- 42:17out with this. Florian says that he thinks the shock on Ace's face is
- 42:23just the fact that they even know about this, And I think that's what
- 42:29I was sort of surprised by, was that Ace would if he knew.
- 42:32I guess Garp would have told him, which I wouldn't have thought Garp would
- 42:37do. But you know, why not, Like I guess there comes a
- 42:43point where it's sort of like it doesn't make a difference if you know,
- 42:46but at this point or not, like, but yeah, the start of
- 42:52the next episode is really like everybody's sort of sitting around and realizing what this
- 43:00means. Everybody who knows Loofy, like what the implication is for Loofy.
- 43:06And I think it's Boa actually, who says so Ace and Lufy aren't actually
- 43:15related. Maybe that was her because in my mind's eye that line was delivered
- 43:20by Robin. But there's no way Robin is here, and or maybe she
- 43:25is. Is she here because she had that whole thing with the like fleeing
- 43:30from that island, but that was like in the East Blue, I think,
- 43:35so I don't think she could possibly have gotten here. And her and
- 43:37Boa look really, really similar, So that's probably who I saw and just
- 43:43assumed it was Robin because I was not paying close enough attention. But yeah,
- 43:49we see the flashback of Garb telling Goldie Roger that he'll take his kid
- 43:55in. I love the fact that Roger asked him to do this, and
- 44:00he's like, Garb just says why me, Like, basically, you knew
- 44:06I would not be able to resist this proposition that I'm a decent guy,
- 44:10and I wish you hadn't. You couldn't have asked somebody who would just reject
- 44:15the whole concept and then we could move on with our days. No,
- 44:17No, you had to know me well enough to be able to tell that
- 44:21I'm the exact kind of soft hearted SAP that would do the job. And
- 44:25now my life is altered completely and forever. And he calls him a selfish
- 44:30bastard, which I did think was rather funny. He's like, why,
- 44:35I mean, because I know you'll do it, And then we see in
- 44:39like you know, the sort of fuzzy detail that they do when it's a
- 44:45memory or if we're looking at the past rouge, and she is like wearing
- 44:54a loose gown to sort of pretend that she's not pregnant, and we see
- 45:00the navy coming in and overturning everything, looking at all the people, all
- 45:05the women who are pregnant, all of the children who were like young enough
- 45:09to have been born within this certain period of time, even like the people
- 45:15who are married or who are who know who the fathers are. They're going
- 45:20after those guys and sort of grilling them to ensure that this all lines up
- 45:24and make sense and could even have been possible. And intermittently we see her
- 45:32just like speaking to her stomach and saying it's not time yet, just a
- 45:37little bit longer. And finally we have Garp turning up with a lantern,
- 45:43and the lantern sort of like this motif throughout the episode where it just keeps
- 45:47turning up and the flame is focused on which I am assuming is due to
- 45:52his powers and like the significance of that, and she's holding the baby's finally
- 46:00given birth, and she says that if it's a girl, and if it's
- 46:07a boy, Ace. Those were the names that he picked. And I
- 46:15like that this woman's like the way that she's animated. She's got a nose
- 46:21that's like on the larger side for the way that women are drawn in this
- 46:24universe, and it makes her look a little bit like Ace. And she
- 46:28also has freckles, so you just really see that resemblance there. And she's
- 46:32cuddling him in the bed and he's crying, and it's a kind of cool
- 46:39animation of like clouds behind her that look like flames, and then she says,
- 46:45oh, Ace, and there's this like silence, and the animation is
- 46:50of a flower like falling to the ground, and that is the moment that
- 46:54she died, Like she used all of the strength she had to keep the
- 47:00child safe and once he was born that was a rap and it had taken
- 47:05everything she had. So this, like this whole history transitions then to uh
- 47:19garp showing up at somebody's house and the name given here is Doadan, which
- 47:25I do not think we've met this person before. That name isn't ringing any
- 47:30bells, correct me if I'm wrong, but he is handing the child over
- 47:35and just basically like you have got to watch the kid, and Loofy is
- 47:40with him as we jump ahead in time, and Garp is saying, you'll
- 47:45have to stay with this family here, and he's got a fucking band aid
- 47:52on his head, which just feels so on like I would not doubt that
- 47:57Lufy as a child got into fucking everything. Florian is saying, I hate
- 48:05the navy so much. They round up all the women and the babies,
- 48:07and well, at least I think they killed them. That's how I took
- 48:09it. Oh, okay, I wasn't thinking they killed them. I was
- 48:13thinking that they were like basically cross checking everybody and questioning them to ensure that
- 48:20there wasn't a possibility. But maybe it is supposed to be a sort of
- 48:24like Herod killing all of the children between certain ages. I didn't take it
- 48:34that way just because there was a that's not the language that's used exactly.
- 48:43It's not really explicitly said, And usually there will be like silhouettes of somebody
- 48:50being killed or blood flying or something to sort of signify that kind of violence
- 48:55is happening, and they didn't include anything like that, so I didn't interpret
- 49:02it that way. But that's not to say that is incorrect I'm gonna go
- 49:08ahead, actually, because like there's the one piece wiki that has the summaries,
- 49:13and I'm going to see whether they specifically give an explanation there he announces,
- 49:23blah blah blah, his biological misled the entire world. Nope, doesn't
- 49:31say here. I'm going to go to the next one. These don't tend
- 49:35to have spoilers in them ever, so I think that I'm totally safe.
- 49:43Let's see. Oh, so the leader tells the soldiers to find all the
- 49:49babies who are due within ten months and to investigate them and all the pregnant
- 49:52women, as well as kill all the suspicious women. So that that's what
- 50:00it says here that they said to and they also look into relationships that the
- 50:04pregnant women have, whether their marriages are real or not. So yeah,
- 50:08that's what they're saying, is that they were all killed, which is fucking
- 50:14brutal this entire island. So there's like a missing generation of boys. I
- 50:20guess boys if they were already born. And then if they are killing women
- 50:24who are still pregnant, who knows. Yikes, that's really fucking grim.
- 50:30Okay, well I had not taken it that way, and that puts everything
- 50:35into a much more horrible light. So thanks for clarifying that. Florian yikes.
- 50:44Florian says, oh it was yay. I was right about all the
- 50:46death, and yeah, when Garb's dropping him off, he's like, you're
- 50:55staying and that's the end of it. Be nice to him, and I
- 51:00love it. Ace is up in the fucking trees and he also has a
- 51:07band aid on his head, and there's just like already, you know,
- 51:10there's this uh kinship between the two of them, and Ace is saying,
- 51:20we both have the blood of criminals flowing through our veins, and that was
- 51:23the only gift those bastards ever gave us. I took the name Portcas from
- 51:29my mother because I owe her so much, but I don't owe my father
- 51:34a damned thing. He can keep his name white Beard is my only father.
- 51:39And this is a speaking to Garp when he's been you know, captured
- 51:45already, so evidently Garp was like going to keep this to himself, and
- 51:52they just had to share this information. And I am sort of like,
- 51:58I get where Ace is coming from with I don't own my father a damn
- 52:00thing, but also like, your dad is the one that set you up
- 52:02to be taken in by Garp and saved, so you kind of do owe
- 52:07him like everything, no offense, I get what you mean, and I'm
- 52:13not even like really interested in arguing. I'm just gonna point that out.
- 52:21And it says you gain notoriety as the captain, the unrelenting captain of the
- 52:25Spade Pirates, and that's when we put it together. There was no doubt
- 52:30that Roger's bloodline had passed on, and Whitebeard came to the same realization and
- 52:38got to you before we did in order to secure your mantle as the next
- 52:43king of the pirates. He warmly accepted the son of his old rival aboard
- 52:49his ship, and Ace says, I joined my father's crew in order to
- 52:57make him the next king, and Sengoku says, nobody believes that except you,
- 53:08which is a pretty brutal line that basically you are deluding yourself and everybody
- 53:17around you knows why he went after you think this was for his benefit,
- 53:23that you made a choice, kid, No, he knew who you were,
- 53:29where they were from, and he came at you because of that.
- 53:32And I think the implication is meant to be that, like you thought,
- 53:38white Beard gave a shit about you as a person, but he knew the
- 53:43whole time who you were and this was all him just making a move playing
- 53:47the game. Which if that is the case, and Ace is over here
- 53:53being like, that was my real father, and then it turns out this
- 53:57dude was actually just kind of playing him, that sucks. I hate that
- 54:02for him, you know, like I just so in anyway, the only
- 54:10recourse we have is to execute you, even if it means we face the
- 54:16prospect of war with white Beard. And it's just one of those things where,
- 54:25you know, it's it's a kind of bizarre story thing to me that
- 54:30like, just because this was your parent, we see you as an extra
- 54:36threat. But because of the way this universe tends to function, I accept
- 54:42it. It's just hard for me to wrap my head around that they would
- 54:45be so threatened merely because of who his parents were. But yeah, so
- 54:52at this point, somebody is yelling, hey, Fleet Admiral, we have
- 54:55a situation. The gates of justice is opening with out us giving permission,
- 55:02and we can't make contact with anybody in the control room. And this is
- 55:07when we see Loofy winding up, getting ready to just punch the gates of
- 55:12justice. He doesn't get a chance to make the punch, but that does
- 55:15not stop him from saying, hey, it worked when they just begin to
- 55:19open by themselves, and I did really enjoy that that he didn't even get
- 55:22a chance to do it. But he's just like, oh, look at
- 55:28perfect Yeah, here's boah the tension here. There she is. I totally
- 55:34missed her last time. So this is when there is this sort of weird
- 55:44fog on the water and you see these faces that are in the dark,
- 55:51and all of a sudden, pop pop, pop pop, all of these
- 55:55ships just begin appearing on the horizon and this guy who's on lookout is like,
- 56:02oh my god, they're already here, and everybody is like wait,
- 56:06what how? And it took no time at all. And you look up
- 56:09and there's like a hundred of them and they're all going, wait, but
- 56:14how did they get in? And it turns out they all got coated so
- 56:19that they could go underwater. And you see all of these truly wild ships
- 56:25that I'm not going to get into the whole like description of every single one
- 56:31of them, but there is a fleet and all of these different like jolly
- 56:38rogers and designs of these new captains who are apparently a lot of them from
- 56:45the New World. Thunder Lord guy, which guys that man the design of
- 56:52him. He looks like an Easter Island statue with a wig like and a
- 56:59mustache. He's got like a what's is it doctor or electric? What's the
- 57:04name of the doctor in uh Sonic the Hedgehog that Jim Carrey place. He's
- 57:07got that kind of mustache. The Decalvin Brothers World Spider Squad. It's worse
- 57:15than we expected. They've got just about every big time captain from the New
- 57:22World with them. And there's a woman who's got like all these rings.
- 57:25She looks like a madam. I'm very interested in her, unsurprisingly, and
- 57:34all of them are just like a Ace, don't worry, We've got your
- 57:38back, bro, We're here. And Ace seems truly surprised that they came.
- 57:45He really didn't believe that they would bother with him. And I sort
- 57:51of like, I wonder if this lends credence to what they are suggesting,
- 57:55or it would like, does this warm his heart or does this make him
- 58:00sort of sad? If what they were saying about white Beard's motivations is correct,
- 58:07do you know what I'm saying. I don't know, but yeah,
- 58:10this is the point where a bunch of ships just actually begin to like come
- 58:15up from underwater and they are right here, like right in front of where
- 58:21they are about to do this execution. They have gotten into the heart of
- 58:24the area. And that is so embarrassing, like truly humiliating. And this
- 58:32is when Garp's like that figures surprise attack. White Beard so is no fool,
- 58:40and this woman just says, Oh, don't act like you're so smart,
- 58:44and again, who is she? Like? What is her deal here?
- 58:50Florian says, any predictions on white Beard? Will you like him?
- 58:52Will he be badass? And does he like Ace because of his blood or
- 58:55because he is a good kid? Doc? Is it Eggman? That's a
- 59:01terrible name. Thank you, though, Uh my prediction is going to be
- 59:10remind me, is white Beard the one that had all of the hoses sticking
- 59:15out of him, all of the like the weird blood stuff. I can't
- 59:22recall who that because there was somebody who was like huge and they were hooked
- 59:30up to machines in a way that I don't know if it was exactly suggesting
- 59:35that he was like going to die if he was disconnected, but it did
- 59:39seem to suggest that like his abilities or his strength or something came from a
- 59:46chemical infusion or blood infusions or something. Florine says, Yeah, that was
- 59:52white Beard. Okay, so I'm gonna say I don't like him. I
- 59:57didn't like him in that scene. I feel like the vibe that we get
- 1:00:05when I see his picture, he's just always sort of smirking, which is
- 1:00:09not necessarily a bad trait, Like there are fun characters who are like that.
- 1:00:15But I feel like it's going to turn out that he didn't have Ace's
- 1:00:20back the way that Ace thought, for the reasons that he thought. But
- 1:00:23I will say that because I really because I believe that maybe Ace didn't know
- 1:00:32as much about the situation as he thought. But I'm going to say that
- 1:00:36I don't believe the military's version of events, and that it was likely not
- 1:00:43fully what Ace thought, but it is not at all what they are suggesting
- 1:00:46either. I feel like, probably he is going to genuinely care about Ace
- 1:00:55on some level, but it will not feel good enough to me, because
- 1:01:00that's been sort of a theme of this show at times, is that like
- 1:01:05people who are supposed to be the authority figures looking out for our friends that
- 1:01:10I have been like unimpressed at the way they've decided to raise them or handle
- 1:01:15them, and I haven't really you know, like that's happened a few times.
- 1:01:20So I'm just thinking, because I like Ace and I'm a little bit
- 1:01:23protective of him, at this point with the story, I'm probably just not
- 1:01:27gonna like the person in charge of him. David's's white Bear looks like he's
- 1:01:34on life support. Yeah, advanced meds compared to Chopper. Okay, Yeah,
- 1:01:37that's what I was thinking. So yeah, that's that's where I stand
- 1:01:43on that. I think I probably won't like him, but I will.
- 1:01:45I think that I will be intended to like him. I think they they
- 1:01:52he will be written in such a way as he is supposed to be likable,
- 1:01:55but that I won't like him, and that as much as I can
- 1:02:01predict. So so yeah, that's how that episode ends. And I am
- 1:02:09really really curious. I mean, like I said, I don't think it's
- 1:02:14going to make a difference to Lufy really, and I guess that like the
- 1:02:17way that it was presented, it seems like Lufy is aware that Ace isn't
- 1:02:22his real brother anyway, like the way that he's brought to this place to
- 1:02:27live and Ace is already there. I was operating this whole time, talking
- 1:02:31about it that I don't think it'll matter to Lufy, but I think he
- 1:02:36knows and it already doesn't matter to him, so yeah, but yeah,
- 1:02:44so okay, I have to wrap this up. But thank you guys again
- 1:02:45for hanging out with me and for your patients and me having to record this
- 1:02:49on a different day. Really really enjoying things and looking forward to finding out
- 1:02:53more so. Until then, Tutulu, motherfuckers, that was an unspoiled network.
