- Lucas: Luna, episode 190 already! We've come a long way. Luna: I know, Lucas! And I'm still hungry from all the food topics. But today we're actually learning how to cook in Cantonese, right? Lucas: Exactly. We're covering three basic cooking verbs that you'll hear all the time in Hong Kong kitchens. First up: 煮飯. Luna: 煮飯. That means cook rice, doesn't it? Lucas: Right. 煮 is the verb for boiling or cooking in liquid, and 飯 is rice. So 煮飯 is to cook rice. Say it with me: 煮飯. Luna: 煮飯. 煮飯. Got it. Lucas: Great. Now the second one: 炒菜. 炒 means stir-fry, and 菜 is vegetables. So 炒菜 is stir-fry vegetables. Luna: 炒菜. That sounds like a sizzling sound. 炒菜. Lucas: Exactly. And the third one: 煲湯. 煲 is to boil slowly, usually for soup, and 湯 is soup. So 煲湯 is to boil soup. Luna: 煲湯. That's the kind of soup your grandma makes for hours. Lucas: Yes. Let's practice all three. Repeat after me: 煮飯, 炒菜, 煲湯. Luna: 煮飯, 炒菜, 煲湯. I can do this. Lucas: Now let's use them in a little scene. Imagine you're home and you want to tell someone what you did. For example: 我今日煮飯. That means 'I cooked rice today'. Luna: 我今日煮飯. So 我 is I, 今日 is today. Lucas: Perfect. And if you stir-fried vegetables: 我今日炒菜. Luna: 我今日炒菜. And if I boiled soup: 我今日煲湯. Lucas: You got it. That's a full meal: 煮飯, 炒菜, and 煲湯. Luna: Yum. Can we add a verb for 'eat'? But I think we learned that before. Lucas: We did — 食. So you could say: 我今日煮飯, 炒菜, 煲湯, 然後食飯. That's 'Today I cooked rice, stir-fried vegetables, boiled soup, and then ate.' Luna: That's a lot of verbs. Let me try: 我今日煮飯, 炒菜, 煲湯, 然後食飯. Lucas: Flawless. You're ready for a cooking competition now. Luna: I'll stick to ordering takeout for now. Lucas: Fair enough. Now, if you're finding these daily lessons helpful and want to support the show, we do have a small way you can help. A couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. It really helps keep the episodes ad-free and coming every day. Luna: Yeah, I know I've learned so much since we started. Even just a coffee helps. Lucas: Alright, back to practice. Let's do a quick review. What's 'cook rice'? Luna: 煮飯. Lucas: Stir-fry vegetables? Luna: 炒菜. Lucas: Boil soup? Luna: 煲湯. Lucas: Excellent. And if you want to say 'I cooked rice today'? Luna: 我今日煮飯. Lucas: Perfect. That's all for today. Keep practicing these verbs and try to use them when you see someone cooking. See you next time! Luna: Bye! 拜拜.
