- 0:28This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:31Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:32tenth annual health IT digital health and RCM
- 0:35meeting. I'm currently joined by Sandeep Rasagi, who
- 0:39is the chief data analytics officer at University
- 0:41of Mississippi Medical Center. Sandeep, thanks for being
- 0:44here, and let's have you start by sharing
- 0:47a little bit more about yourself and your
- 0:48work in health care. Thank you, Grace. Really
- 0:50excited to be here. As you mentioned, I'm
- 0:53the chief data analytics officer at University of
- 0:55Mississippi Medical Center.
- 0:56I would say my role is more of
- 0:58a chief liaison officer between data and technology
- 1:01and business leaders. So I really
- 1:04wanna help the net help the operational leaders
- 1:07navigate all the challenges of data and technology
- 1:10that we are running into today, especially with
- 1:12AI being everywhere.
- 1:14I lead the data strategy and the data
- 1:16governance teams and activities in our, organization
- 1:19also
- 1:20help, let our team grow into a more,
- 1:24ready force for tomorrow.
- 1:26Wonderful. Well, let's start our conversation
- 1:29talking about AI as this is a hot
- 1:31topic everywhere, but specifically in health care. And
- 1:34nearly half of medical practices reported using AI
- 1:37in some capacity in this last year, and
- 1:39it remains a key topic for health IT
- 1:41leaders.
- 1:42So from your perspective, what are the use
- 1:44cases that are making a difference right now,
- 1:46and how are you leveraging them in your
- 1:47organization?
- 1:49You rightly said AI is everywhere. In fact,
- 1:51I think it's a little bit of a
- 1:53too much AI going on in everything. I
- 1:56in fact, the day is not far. We'll
- 1:57probably see some AI enabled
- 2:00washers and dryers. Wait. Actually, we just saw
- 2:03them. I just saw
- 2:04AI enabled washers and dryers at a Costco
- 2:07store recently when I was there. So that
- 2:09tells me there is a little bit too
- 2:11much of a hype of AI in every
- 2:13dimension of our life, especially in the health
- 2:16care as well.
- 2:17I do see a lot of value through
- 2:20all of this hype as well.
- 2:22One of the areas that I see,
- 2:24growing up, to become a significant and a
- 2:27strong use case,
- 2:28is ambient listening and an ambient technology. I
- 2:31think we are seeing very
- 2:33positive use case of, our, clinical leaders finding
- 2:37great value in that,
- 2:38and it's helping save time and and helping
- 2:41them improve their efficiency.
- 2:43At at the same time, there are multiple
- 2:45other technologies. Predictive analytics is one that's showing
- 2:48us,
- 2:49where to go in terms of our,
- 2:51patient
- 2:52clinical parameters, how do we do some,
- 2:55analysis on where the patients will be going
- 2:57in terms of their length of state reduction
- 2:59and some readmission rate reductions. So I think
- 3:01those are predictive analytics are great opportunities.
- 3:04At the same time, there are other areas
- 3:06as well like operational flows,
- 3:09of, patients and some efficiency gains there as
- 3:11well. So multiple areas where I see AI,
- 3:14adding and contributing a lot, to the health
- 3:17care field primarily, but I do see,
- 3:20there are certain selection criteria that have to
- 3:22be implemented to make sure we get the
- 3:24right technology for the right usage.
- 3:27And as virtual care expands from AI enabled
- 3:30tools and remote monitoring to broader health systems,
- 3:34introducing new technology brings challenges. So what advice
- 3:37do you have for leaders navigating everything from
- 3:39governance to patient engagement, and can you share
- 3:41an example of how your organization has balanced
- 3:44innovation with operational constraint?
- 3:46Thanks, Grace. That's a that's a great question.
- 3:50Like we talked about
- 3:51AI being everywhere these days, that's also the
- 3:54case for the products
- 3:55and the, functionalities
- 3:57being offered to our operational leaders. So one
- 3:59of the responsibilities
- 4:01that, we,
- 4:02perform here in our organization
- 4:04is making sure that we are able to
- 4:06provide a governance framework to our operational leaders,
- 4:09so that they can select the right product
- 4:11for, improving their day to day lives.
- 4:14We, at at the same time,
- 4:17wanna make sure that we are being very
- 4:19cautious and diligent in making use of, our
- 4:22resources,
- 4:24and not
- 4:25having too many wasted trials. One of the
- 4:27things that being a state funded organization, we
- 4:30wanna be very careful about is even if
- 4:32there is a delayed value in some cases,
- 4:35a delayed value is better than, wasted dollars
- 4:38or wasted efforts. So I think that's something
- 4:40that we are very cognizant about. We also
- 4:43wanna make sure that, we are trying to
- 4:46improve the overall ecosystem of our organization.
- 4:49So we wanna make sure that we are
- 4:51an epic shop. We wanna make sure that
- 4:53we are trying to stay true to our
- 4:55main EMR as much as possible. So if
- 4:58there are competing products,
- 4:59that are out there, but if epic has
- 5:02something similar functionality,
- 5:03we will try to lean towards epic. So
- 5:05the bar for other products
- 5:07that offer a similar functionality is generally higher,
- 5:11so that they are not able to clutter,
- 5:14our landscape. So that's one of the things
- 5:16that we wanna make sure we help our
- 5:17operational leaders select
- 5:19the right products, then we also help them
- 5:22go through the change management. We wanna make
- 5:24sure that it's not something that we just
- 5:26buy a product and then, let the team
- 5:29start using it. The entire,
- 5:31process of selecting and then implementing a product
- 5:34with the right change management approach is very
- 5:37critical. User adoption is very important for us.
- 5:40We have all seen, not just through AI,
- 5:43but prior technology products as well, there have
- 5:45been a huge history or a long history
- 5:48of all those
- 5:49great technical products that were bought,
- 5:52but were not successful because the user adoption
- 5:54wasn't high. So I think that's what we
- 5:56are very careful about making sure selecting the
- 5:58right product and implementing them in the right
- 6:01way so that we get the high user
- 6:03adoption and a high ROI.
- 6:05And how are you seeing recent legislation both
- 6:07state and federal affect health care organizations
- 6:09and health care IT specifically, and have you
- 6:12adjusted strategies in response?
- 6:15Yes. We have. So as we all know,
- 6:17regulations are still catching up with what's going
- 6:20on,
- 6:21in the field of AI. AI is moving
- 6:24just way too fast,
- 6:25and state level and federal level regulations are
- 6:28still catching up in terms of where we
- 6:30want to be.
- 6:31Again, as a state funded organization, we wanna
- 6:33make sure that we are flexible and nimble,
- 6:36but at the same time,
- 6:37we are very cautious. So we may or
- 6:40may not be at the cutting edge of
- 6:42early adoption,
- 6:43but we wanna make sure that the products
- 6:45that we select,
- 6:46follow the right compliance and the right guidelines,
- 6:49in terms of any rules and regulations.
- 6:52We follow we work very closely with our
- 6:54regulatory and compliance agencies inside and outside our
- 6:57organization,
- 6:59and make sure all of our products that
- 7:01we select, and the technologies we adopt,
- 7:04follow the right criteria. For example,
- 7:06some of the products out there are more
- 7:08of a black box AI. We don't know
- 7:10what models go inside them. We wanna make
- 7:13sure that, the products that we select do
- 7:16have,
- 7:17diverse representation of our population demographics.
- 7:20Also, we wanna make sure ethics,
- 7:23and,
- 7:24equity,
- 7:25are taken care of in the product selection
- 7:27that we have. So that's something,
- 7:29digital access is one key,
- 7:32area of focus for our demographic population. So
- 7:35we we focus a lot on ensuring that
- 7:38the products and the technologies that we select
- 7:41and offer,
- 7:42represent our entire demographics.
- 7:45And then as we wrap up our conversation,
- 7:47what is your top piece of advice for
- 7:48health care leaders as they prepare for further
- 7:50advancements in technology and rising demands for care?
- 7:53I think the top piece of advice for
- 7:56our operational leaders as well as rest of
- 7:58our technology team is AI is not plug
- 8:01and play. There is no solution or a
- 8:04product out there that will work in vacuum
- 8:06unless we have the entire foundation
- 8:08and the infrastructure that supports it,
- 8:11and provides the right foundation for it to
- 8:13deliver. We cannot take a sensor from Tesla
- 8:16and put it on a Chevy and just
- 8:18start expecting it to deliver the same value.
- 8:20So, and until the entire ecosystem is,
- 8:24built and developed the right way,
- 8:26the solution, the benefits, and the offerings will
- 8:29not be available. So I think that's the
- 8:31big picture,
- 8:32of getting the right product and the right
- 8:34technology.
- 8:35For the right reasons, it needs to fit
- 8:37in our organizational strategy,
- 8:39and then deliver the value that we are
- 8:41looking for.
- 8:42Wonderful. Well, Sandeep, thanks so much for joining
- 8:44me today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast and
- 8:46sharing these insights. Again, we are recording live
- 8:48at the tenth annual health IT, digital health,
- 8:50and RCM meeting. Okay. Thank you, Grace. Appreciate
- 8:53that.
