Latest / Pick Up and Deliver / Kramer and Kiesling (Great Designers)
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver: the podcast where I pick up my audio recorder as I step
- 0:07out the door and deliver an episode to you while I walk around.
- 0:11I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:15Well, good morning listeners.
- 0:22It's a lovely day here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:24The birds are chirping.
- 0:26The commuters are on their way to work.
- 0:28I'm out for a little stroll.
- 0:30So I'm looking forward to talking to you today about some games and I realize it's been a
- 0:36while since I've done a Great Designer episode.
- 0:38In fact, looking back at my podcast notes, I have not done a good job of marking which
- 0:44episodes are Great Designer episodes.
- 0:45I'm actually going to go back and tag those as part of my episode cleanup today because
- 0:51when I need to be able to see like, who did I do an episode about?
- 0:54And right now the only one tagged is Phil Walker-Harding.
- 0:57And I know I've done episodes about Vladimir Suchy and Martin Wallace and Richard Garfield.
- 1:02But I don't think as far as I can tell that I've done one about Wolfgang Kramer or Michael
- 1:08Kiesling or their combined duo performance as Kiesling & Kramer.
- 1:15And since I played a game recently designed by the pair, I thought this is a great opportunity
- 1:21to discuss it.
- 1:23So what I thought I would do today is just sort of go through a list of Wolfgang Kramer
- 1:29games from highest rank until I've reached about the halfway point on the walk.
- 1:34Then I'll switch to Michael Kiesling games and do the same thing.
- 1:37Basically I'm just going to talk about which of their games I've played, which ones I really
- 1:41enjoy and why.
- 1:43So that's what we're doing today.
- 1:44It's a Wolfgang Kramer, Michael Kiesling thing.
- 1:47Now the only thing I really know about Wolfgang Kramer is that early on in his design
- 1:52career he put the score track around the outside of the board.
- 1:56The game that I'm most familiar with or first familiar with that did that was Ticket to Ride.
- 2:01But the idea of having a score track that goes around the outside that you move your score
- 2:04piece along, that was his innovation.
- 2:07And apparently was such a big deal at the time that people in the industry often call
- 2:12that a Kramer track.
- 2:13So good on you, dude.
- 2:15All right.
- 2:16So the first game, his highest rank game is El Grande.
- 2:19It's a rank of 92.
- 2:20It's from 1995.
- 2:21Now this is a game everybody still talks about.
- 2:24The board game brawl or the board game barrage people are particularly enthusiastic about
- 2:29El Grande.
- 2:30But when I hear people talk about it, they still talk about what a great game it is.
- 2:33I haven't had a chance to play yet.
- 2:34And frankly it doesn't sound like my cup of tea... too fighty.
- 2:39But I do generally play as an omnigamer.
- 2:41I think if people were setting up this game to play, I would definitely give it a try.
- 2:44If nothing else, it's in the top 100.
- 2:47I feel like if I can play everything that's in the top 100, I'm doing a pretty good
- 2:50job.
- 2:51El Grande I have not played.
- 2:54Next highest ranked is the Princes of Florence, 259.
- 2:57Now I have the older edition of this or had, did I sell it?
- 3:01I can't remember if I sold it or not.
- 3:02No, I think I still have it.
- 3:03Princes of Florence is... ah! no I did sell it.
- 3:06I did sell it.
- 3:07It's a tile lane game where you, an auction game where you are building your Palazzo and
- 3:14hiring different kinds of experts to build out your area.
- 3:18I thought it was a pretty interesting game, well made.
- 3:22I had a good time playing it.
- 3:24That said, the theme is pretty tired, you know, oh, you're a European noble person.
- 3:30Okay.
- 3:31The graphic design on the original edition that I had, I did not like.
- 3:35And just overall it was a game that I thought was good if somebody brought it and said, hey
- 3:40we're playing Princes of Florence, you want it?
- 3:41I'd be like, sure.
- 3:42But it's not a game I'm going to choose over many of the other games I had.
- 3:46So it didn't make sense to keep it in my collection.
- 3:49That's the argument I'm offering for myself.
- 3:51If it's not in my collection anymore, I guess it still could be in which case, oops.
- 3:55But let me see, have I logged it as not in my collection anymore in Boardgamegeek?
- 3:59Oh, it still says in collection, previously owned.
- 4:03Okay.
- 4:04So I have, in fact, sold it or said that I was selling it.
- 4:07Next up Tikal is one of the famous mask games.
- 4:09I have not played that although our game club does have a copy.
- 4:13So it's something I should try at some point.
- 4:15That's Rank 337.
- 4:16Downforce, Rank 417.
- 4:18This is a car racing game.
- 4:21And the interesting part of it is that you own one or two cars and then you're betting on
- 4:27these cars.
- 4:29And you help the cars move by playing cards.
- 4:32And a big part of the game is just sort of moving cars in a way that somebody else can't
- 4:36move the car that they want to move is kind of the big thing.
- 4:39So it's a car racing game.
- 4:40I think it's fine.
- 4:42There's not a whole lot.
- 4:43I mean, it's very tactical and I'm sure you can get really good at it versus not being
- 4:48good at it.
- 4:49It's a fine time and again, it goes in the category of sure I'd played if somebody's getting it
- 4:52out, but not a game
- 4:54I'm all that keen to get.
- 4:55Though I think if I found a copy I'd goodwill for three bucks.
- 4:58I would pick it up, mostly for my game club at school, but not a game I'm driven to
- 5:03own.
- 5:04Downforce.
- 5:05Next up Coliseum.
- 5:06I hear a lot of good things about Coliseum, but I have not had a chance to play it myself.
- 5:11Rank 618.
- 5:12Rank 5 I don't know what that is.
- 5:14Torres ranks 726.
- 5:15Now this is a game I do have.
- 5:17I bought it pretty early in my board game buying in my modern board game, buying career
- 5:23which started in like 2010 maybe.
- 5:25That's when I really started like starting to buy games occasionally and pay attention to
- 5:30the hobby.
- 5:31I don't look back at when tabletop was on.
- 5:34When that was when that was on the air, I was diving into the hobby again.
- 5:39I mean I've been in board games my whole life but sort of a modern incarnation.
- 5:43I think I got it in a math trade because I'd heard it's good.
- 5:46And it is really good.
- 5:48It is an action selection game.
- 5:50It's one of the first games I played that used action points and you had a number of different
- 5:56things you could do on your turn with your action points.
- 5:58And you have these little cards that let you do stuff and you're building these towers
- 6:02and the person who sort of builds the best towers are the most successful ones earns
- 6:06the points.
- 6:07Somebody who just recently played Porta Nigra which I'll talk about in a future episode.
- 6:12I guess I'm giving away something for the top of the stack.
- 6:15Whoops.
- 6:16I can you can definitely see it.
- 6:17Well for one thing you can see the literal inheritance in Porta Nigra because it's got
- 6:21the little bricks that are a key part of Torres.
- 6:26But Torres has this really interesting mechanism where you're trying to take control of these
- 6:29towers and you're moving your little knights around.
- 6:31It's really good.
- 6:33I like it a lot.
- 6:34And definitely played if you get a chance.
- 6:36It looks like there's the current cover in Boardgamegeek has a new cover so it must have been
- 6:40republished.
- 6:41I have the older one.
- 6:42I don't know if I have the 1999 version but it certainly feels older.
- 6:46All right.
- 6:47Continuing on, Mexica, another of the mask games I haven't played.
- 6:50Coal Baron, Nope.
- 6:52Palaces of Carrara.
- 6:53And actually have the Palaces of Carrara.
- 6:56I picked it up in as a used sale but I haven't played it yet.
- 7:00So it's on my to play list.
- 7:02Maharajah.
- 7:03Actually somebody at my game club just played this the other week.
- 7:07Linko
- 7:08I don't know what that is.
- 7:09Paris.
- 7:10Not all that well reviewed didn't get to play it.
- 7:11Hacienda.
- 7:12Java.
- 7:13The third of the mask game.
- 7:15Wandering towers.
- 7:16That's a game I keep seeing at my Board Game Store.
- 7:19And it looks pretty cool.
- 7:20It was a little more expensive than I wanted to pay for a game and no much about it.
- 7:24But we designed six nimit.
- 7:26Oh, we just got to Porta Nigra.
- 7:28Rank 1475 on Boardgamegeek.
- 7:31It was pretty fun.
- 7:32We'll talk about it more in another episode.
- 7:34But well worth a look if you get a chance.
- 7:38Asara, I don't know what that is.
- 7:39Re-nature.
- 7:40That's a game I saw a number of times on the shelf.
- 7:42I don't think I noticed it was a Kramer game.
- 7:45It looked interesting but again, you know, there have been a whole bunch of nature themed
- 7:48games in the last few years.
- 7:49So it's sort of white noise.
- 7:51Pueblo, I don't know what that is.
- 7:53Adventureland.
- 7:54Adventureland is one of those games I heard about a lot.
- 7:57I think Richard Ham, Rahdo, really liked Adventureland and talked it up a bunch.
- 8:02But I didn't hear much about it from anybody else.
- 8:05So I know what to say about that.
- 8:07Savannah Park.
- 8:09This is a game that got just the... a barest hint of buzz when it came out in 2021.
- 8:15I think it came out at Essen.
- 8:17I remember there was a little bit of buzz about it.
- 8:19I think it's Capstone Games if I recall.
- 8:22And people were just excited about like, "Oh, this looks really neat."
- 8:26But then I didn't hear anything about it after.
- 8:28So I don't know if it did get much saturation.
- 8:30I mean, we are in a land of just... or a time of just so many games that it's harder to
- 8:35get a get traction.
- 8:37Sealand, I don't know what that is.
- 8:39Coal Baron the card game, Cuzco, Heimlich and Company from 1984.
- 8:45Huh.
- 8:46That's life.
- 8:47El Capitan is another game I've heard a lot about.
- 8:50I wonder, does he like games that start with EL?
- 8:52He's got El Grandet.
- 8:55And now El Capitan.
- 8:56Which looks like it's about sailing, not about a mountain, Nauticus, Take 5, which I think
- 9:03Take 5 is like six-nimate or related to six-Nimmt.
- 9:07Tikal 2, apparently they may have a sequel.
- 9:10Daytona 500, expeditions around the world, top race, merchants of Middle Ages, Kaimum.
- 9:171994's Big Boss.
- 9:19I saw somebody did a video of this.
- 9:21It looks like it just... I was like, "Isn't this just Aquire but less interesting?"
- 9:25I mean, I haven't played it so first impressions, first impression from watching a video for a
- 9:30minute.
- 9:31But it looked a lot like it wishes it was a choir or sounds a bit like a choir.
- 9:36I'm just sort of skimming through now looking at other things called Aura Park, I think
- 9:40was a sequel to Savannah Park.
- 9:43So you must have done six-Nimmt too, which is a game a lot of people really like.
- 9:47I have not.
- 9:48I've only played it once or twice on board game arena.
- 9:51So, there are a number of games that I just mentioned that I have played from Wolfgang
- 9:57Kramer.
- 9:58There might be more, but those are the ones that I'm seeing that are the sort of top ranked
- 10:02ones.
- 10:03I'm down and... Oh, we'll stop with this one.
- 10:06Vampire Queen.
- 10:07Vampire Queen is a ladder climbing card game that I have a copy of.
- 10:13It's an interesting one, really easy to play.
- 10:15It's ranked 6,000, so it's at least ranked.
- 10:18But we're the try if you get a chance.
- 10:20So, Vampire Queen will be the one I'll stop on.
- 10:23All right.
- 10:24So, now what I'm going to do is I will switch over to talking about Michael Kiesling, or...
- 10:30That's how I say it anyway, Kiesling.
- 10:32So Michael Kiesling is a much less prolific designer, at least in terms of how many of his
- 10:37designs show up on board game geek.
- 10:41On board game geek, Wolfgang Kramer had something like 600 designs, and Michael Kiesling
- 10:46has 95.
- 10:48So, real slacker there.
- 10:50I first came across Kiesling, I think, in the widespread coverage of Porta Nigra, actually.
- 10:57I may have encountered his name before, but it seems most likely that that is where I first
- 11:02encountered him.
- 11:04Because when Porta Nigra came out, I recall it got... I definitely heard a review of it on
- 11:08Dice Tower, or they talked about it.
- 11:10I definitely heard it on the secret cabal, and I definitely heard it on
- 11:15Blue Peg Pink Peg.
- 11:16So, those three together, it was definitely in my... on my radar.
- 11:21And Rahdo probably talked about it as well.
- 11:23So, that's sort of where Kiesling would have come into my purview, and then any other games
- 11:28that he made that are... so let's jump into his games and see what I have to say.
- 11:34So, his top rated game, rate number 74 of all time, is Azul.
- 11:38Azul is a great game.
- 11:39This is one I've talked about a number of times here.
- 11:41I've recommended it.
- 11:42I've done a duel.
- 11:43An Azul duel.
- 11:45It is a great drafting game where you're drawing tiles from a series of discs and placing them
- 11:53into these... onto these other discs called shops and basically just developing the... trying
- 12:01to score by collecting certain numbers of tiles in the right order.
- 12:05It's really fun.
- 12:06It's a great game that starts off relatively low conflict, but then there's a moment of
- 12:11shift, especially in a two-player game, where suddenly...
- 12:15of the choice, like, do you actively determine what you're taking to try to stick somebody
- 12:21with tiles they can't use, or even worse, do you like... like there are times where there'll
- 12:27be a sort of brings-person ship where you have a huge pile of tiles that's developing
- 12:32and whoever gets stuck with this is going to lose a lot of points.
- 12:34It's great.
- 12:35That's Azul.
- 12:37Number 180 is Azul Summer Pavilion.
- 12:40This is the third in the Azul line.
- 12:43It's the second sequel.
- 12:45This is my wife's favorite, although I will confess we do not have Azul Queen's Garden.
- 12:50Basically when Stained Glass of Cintra came out, the second one, the reviews were mixed and
- 12:55I played it and I didn't think that much of it.
- 12:58Then Summer Pavilion got pretty good reviews and that is in fact our favorite.
- 13:02The Queen's Garden one, it sounds a lot like Calico to me.
- 13:06Like so much like it.
- 13:07I don't know if I need another game that does that.
- 13:10But Calico already does that.
- 13:13That's sort of where we are with the Azul sequels.
- 13:15There's Master Chocolatier which just changes the theme of Azul from Mosaic in Portugal
- 13:22to Chocolate.
- 13:24Not really a game change, so I didn't buy that either.
- 13:27But Summer Pavilion is great.
- 13:29It changes what you're doing just a little bit.
- 13:31It changes the scoring conditions a little bit.
- 13:33It's less aggressive.
- 13:35It's harder to stick somebody with tiles they can't use.
- 13:38Pretty good.
- 13:39It's Azul Summer Pavilion.
- 13:40Then we got Tikal.
- 13:42I mentioned that one before.
- 13:44Heaven and Ale is a game that got a lot of buzz when it came out.
- 13:48It definitely was on the category of things I'd like to try at some point.
- 13:51But it's just never crossed my transom. When I have a chance to try it.
- 13:54But I definitely would.
- 13:55This would definitely be a game I'd pick up used or if I found it at a Goodwill I would
- 14:00think of it as a jackpot.
- 14:02Definitely a game that gets a lot of love.
- 14:05That's Rank 343.
- 14:06Heaven and Ale.
- 14:08He's the Azul Stained Glass of Cintra 431.
- 14:11Vikings at 596.
- 14:12This is not a game I've played.
- 14:14Vikings.
- 14:15I've seen it in a number of places and it looks like it might be fun.
- 14:19I mean, anything that's got like a Viking long chip on the cover looks cool.
- 14:23But yeah, so that is a game I would like to try if I got a chance.
- 14:27About no much about it.
- 14:28Then we have Azul Queen's Garden.
- 14:30673.
- 14:31I already did my Azul spiel.
- 14:32And we have Torres again.
- 14:34723.
- 14:35Now if I was paying attention to designers I might have noticed.
- 14:38The Kramer and Kiesling design Torres together.
- 14:41Because I definitely had that before I heard about Porta Nigra.
- 14:45Before the Nigra is probably the first time where I heard about Kramer and Kiesling.
- 14:49They were already a famous design duo when Porta and Nigra came out.
- 14:52In fact, that was the beginning of Stronghold's Great Designer series, which they had a series
- 14:59for a while that they were doing.
- 15:00I think that Porta and Nigra was on there.
- 15:04I think they did a car game, Kraftwagon or something, maybe.
- 15:10And then they did Auztralia with Martin Wallace.
- 15:14So they've done a number of games.
- 15:15I don't know they did more than three or four.
- 15:17Oh, they did an Uwe Rosenberg game.
- 15:19I feel like maybe Cottage Garden.
- 15:22That the Stronghold was doing this thing where they were trying to have one game from each
- 15:26of these great designers.
- 15:27Porta Nigra was the one there.
- 15:29There's Mexica again, Coal Baron, Palaces of Carrara, Maharajah.
- 15:35Seems like the same list.
- 15:36Riverboat.
- 15:37So Riverboat is a Kiesling one.
- 15:39Now this is one that I definitely would play if I had a chance.
- 15:41It's very well reviewed.
- 15:43It's often mentioned.
- 15:44I think it's hard to get used.
- 15:46The shut-up and sit-down folks really like it, which makes the game very hard to come
- 15:51by in the use market.
- 15:53And it sounds like a neat race game.
- 15:54I think I would probably like it better than something like Downforce.
- 15:58But who knows, maybe it's very similar to Downforce.
- 16:00We have Azul, Azul Chocolatier, linko, Paris, Java, wandering towers.
- 16:06Here's Porta Nigra again, Asara, Renature, Miyabi.
- 16:10I don't know what that is.
- 16:12Pueblo, Adventureland, Sansucci is definitely a game I've heard of.
- 16:15It's ranked 7.1 on board game geek.
- 16:18So that's not bad, but I don't know anything about it.
- 16:22Savannah Park called Coal Baron the Card Game.
- 16:24Cusco, that's life, Nauticus is not a game I'm familiar with.
- 16:29Tikal 2, Cavom.
- 16:31Nope, I don't know that one.
- 16:33Just skimming through these to see if there's any other games I recognize from Kiesling.
- 16:38No, I don't think so.
- 16:40And I've gotten up to rank 7,000.
- 16:42So about the same place that I stopped with Kramer.
- 16:45So Kiesling has a slightly narrower window of games he's designed on his own.
- 16:50Most of the games that he's really well known for.
- 16:52He designed with Kramer with the exception of Azul and its many spin-offs.
- 16:57Which, I don't know, when I heard about Azul Master Chocolatier, I was sort of like,
- 17:01oh, this reminds me of the Hudsucker Proxy now.
- 17:04If you haven't seen the Hudsucker Proxy, you should.
- 17:06It's a weird and delightful movie from the Coen Brothers.
- 17:10This maybe their fourth movie or something.
- 17:12It's pretty early.
- 17:13Stars Tim Robbins and Paul Newman as business types.
- 17:20Tim Robbins plays sort of young hick from the city who has an idea for a new toy and the
- 17:26idea is a hulu hoop.
- 17:29And part of the joke of the game, part of the joke of the movie is that his idea when he shows
- 17:34it to people, it's just a piece of paper with a circle drawn on it.
- 17:37And he says, "you know, for kids."
- 17:40And then of course the hulu hoop becomes very popular and he becomes famous.
- 17:44And then he basically, like every idea he has after that is variations on the hulu hoop.
- 17:53Like he has one that's weighted with sand.
- 17:56He's got one that, whatever.
- 17:57He's got a bunch of different variations on the hulu hoop.
- 18:01And part of the joke is he doesn't have any other real ideas.
- 18:04All his ideas are just variations on the hulu hoop.
- 18:07I don't think that's true with Michael Kiesling.
- 18:09We've just talked about a number of different games that are well liked and popular.
- 18:15But I can't help but notice half of his highest ranked games are Azul or variations on Azul.
- 18:35Now please don't interpret this as a shade throwing.
- 18:38No shade here.
- 18:39I certainly would throw lots more stuff at the wall if people were eager for a thing I made.
- 18:48If I made Azul and they're like, we'd love to see some more Azul.
- 18:52And then people like that too.
- 18:53Why wouldn't you keep doing that?
- 18:56At least in part as a way to keep your name out there.
- 18:59Keep people interested in the things you're doing.
- 19:01You could try new stuff.
- 19:02I mean, Azul Queens Garden is such a different game from Azul.
- 19:06It's not only the lightest relationship, honestly, from what I've read.
- 19:10But the design pedigree is a little smaller there.
- 19:13Nonetheless, Kramer and Kiesling are a renowned duo who have made a lot of different games.
- 19:19And doing this really does make me want to take a look at the mask trilogy, particularly
- 19:22because I definitely have Tikal and maybe Java available to me in the board game club library.
- 19:28So yeah, that would be really fun to do.
- 19:31Well, that brings me to the end of my walk.
- 19:35That Kramer and Kiesling game is your favorite, which Kramer game is your favorite? which Kiesling
- 19:39game is your favorite?
- 19:40I want to know all three of those.
- 19:42And you can tell me by going over to boardgamegeek guild 326 and posting in the forums
