- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. So I know a lot of us are
- 0:31traveling this week. I'm not, I'm traveling right to
- 0:35the chicken coop. That's about the extent of my
- 0:38travel. However, I do have guests coming
- 0:40and you know, it's going to be a very untraditional Thanksgiving
- 0:45in the sense that we are not doing a Turkey.
- 0:48I am on a Turkey revolt and just over the Turkey thing.
- 0:53So I asked that we do something different and my husband is
- 0:56making a brisket and I think he's roasting other things too,
- 1:00but he's doing a brisket. So the Thanksgiving is going to
- 1:04be a little different and I'm very grateful for that.
- 1:07But in any event, today what we're talking about is you do
- 1:11not need to attend every argument you're invited to over
- 1:16this holiday. And I've had so many clients
- 1:20talk to me this past week, two weeks about, well, what do I do
- 1:24when this person says this or how do I handle this?
- 1:27Because I know this really irritates me when this comes up.
- 1:29And we've been navigating this and it's just so important, that
- 1:34phrase. I want you to really hear me say
- 1:36it again. You do not have to attend every
- 1:40argument you're invited to. And what I mean by that is if
- 1:44somebody starts poking you and throwing hooks at you, which you
- 1:49potentially can be really peppered with them, especially
- 1:53if it's a subject that has to do with you or your actions or
- 1:57something around you that they know is something that irritates
- 2:01you, you don't have to attend. You can just sit there and
- 2:04listen. You can say, oh, that's
- 2:06interesting. My go to phrase for people can't
- 2:09tell you how many times I've said that this week is just go,
- 2:13you know what? That's interesting.
- 2:15You don't have to say anything else.
- 2:17You don't have to say, how can you think that way?
- 2:19Even though that's what's you're going on in your head.
- 2:23Remember, your indoor voice and your outdoor voice are two
- 2:26separate things. Just like when you're little,
- 2:29you know, you hear your mother say, please use your indoor
- 2:32voice, make it quiet. Don't use your outdoor voice.
- 2:35Well, as adults. What that means as an adult is
- 2:38it doesn't have to be said externally.
- 2:42You can say it internally. You can think, gosh, this person
- 2:45is deft. I don't even understand why I'm
- 2:47having a conversation with this person.
- 2:49You can be all opinionated in your head, but you don't need to
- 2:53engage your mouth because the moment you engage your mouth,
- 2:56you expose your position. And the moment you expose your
- 3:01position, now you have an issue. As soon as you do that, as soon
- 3:05as your position is exposed, you're vulnerable and you start
- 3:08to feel your emotions go up. So if you are, you know, in that
- 3:13mindset of managing your emotions and really controlling
- 3:17them and being able to decide who's driving your bus, you
- 3:20recognize that this may be the time to create a persona on your
- 3:24bus that's called holiday person.
- 3:27And that holiday person is calm and cheery and doesn't have any
- 3:31triggers and just goes through the, the whole thing like in a
- 3:35bubble. And then this is just, you wrap
- 3:38yourself in that belief of like, oh, I'm in holiday person mode.
- 3:41So I don't engage in any of this.
- 3:43So if someone even brings the stuff up that frustrates you,
- 3:46annoys you, you literally can say, you know what?
- 3:49I'm in. I'm just in holiday mode right
- 3:51now and I just can't even enter into this conversation.
- 3:54It's not part of me right now. And people just look at you like
- 3:58they don't know what to do with you.
- 3:59But that's good. That's what you want.
- 4:01You don't want them to be able to push any of your buttons
- 4:04without your permission. Your buttons are your choice.
- 4:08You get to decide who pushes them.
- 4:10You get to decide what happens. Nobody else.
- 4:12So don't allow that to happen. Just simply shut it off.
- 4:15Cut it off. Don't do it.
- 4:17And you do that by entering into that belief beforehand.
- 4:21Because if you wait to think this through when you're in the
- 4:24moment, I guarantee you it is much harder to control it.
- 4:28So you have to figure it out before you go, Figure it out
- 4:33before they arrive, figure out how you're going to handle it.
- 4:36And it makes life infinitely easier.
- 4:39Just be in a very, very special place in your head where it's
- 4:43like, no, I'm in holiday mode. I'm just enjoy, I'm, I'm taking
- 4:46it in, I'm relaxing. I'm not going to get myself
- 4:50worked up about things I can't control or have no desire to
- 4:53control. And ultimately the only thing
- 4:56you can control is yourself, your thoughts, your beliefs,
- 4:59your actions. That's all.
- 5:00That's what you can control. Everything else is by the
- 5:03wayside. So I'm going to recommend that
- 5:06you figure out this persona ahead of time.
- 5:08I'm going to recommend that you figure out things beforehand so
- 5:12that you don't get stuck in that moment.
- 5:15Look at who's going to be in your group, who's going to be
- 5:17those triggers. Understand what could come up,
- 5:20deflate it before it happens, and you can be far more
- 5:23successful and happy by the end of this Thanksgiving holiday.
- 5:27All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:30will see you tomorrow. Bye.
