- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:20Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:22Speaker 1: have a guest joining us. Check him out at Yahoo Sports.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Charles McDonald, what's going on?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Nothing much. Good to be here, especially coming off a big,
- 0:33Speaker 2: national TV Falcons win this weekend, you know, beating down
- 0:36Speaker 2: on that Minnesota Vikings. So I think this is the
- 0:38Speaker 2: first time that I've had something positive to say about
- 0:40Speaker 2: the Falcons around you. So that was a nice way
- 0:43Speaker 2: to cap the weekend off.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We're going to get to that. The first point I'm
- 0:45Speaker 1: going to make is I'm going to do everything I can.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I guess it doesn't have to come up too much anymore.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm going to call you Charles McDonald and not Charles
- 0:50Speaker 1: Robinson because I'm totally the guy at this point in
- 0:53Speaker 1: my life where I'm playing the neighborhood play on all
- 0:55Speaker 1: these names. Poor Justin Jefferson. I call him his brother's
- 0:58Speaker 1: name like I'm his mama. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:01Speaker 1: Those of you who don't understand me calling Justin Jefferson
- 1:05Speaker 1: Jordan Jefferson, clearly if you are a man, you don't
- 1:08Speaker 1: have a brother because this is just how it works
- 1:10Speaker 1: from time to time. If it's two of y'all, Y'all
- 1:13Speaker 1: going to get called by the other night. I will
- 1:16Speaker 1: say right fast about the Falcons. I was watching the
- 1:19Speaker 1: game against the Vikings, and I had to text you,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and I was like, yo, Falcons is out here looking
- 1:25Speaker 1: like Bama, dog. They was out here jumping routes. They
- 1:28Speaker 1: was getting heat.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And I'm looking like, Vikings, y'all okay? Because, look, I
- 1:35Speaker 2: know they spent a lot on this defense, right? Three
- 1:38Speaker 2: first-round picks on two rookie edge rushers because they traded
- 1:41Speaker 2: up for James Pierce. Then they added Xavier Watson and
- 1:45Speaker 2: Billy Bowman on day two of the draft to play
- 1:48Speaker 2: safety and then nickel for them. So you took one
- 1:51Speaker 2: of the worst defenses in football last year, and you
- 1:53Speaker 2: added four rookies and Devine Diablo, who's like a dirty
- 1:56Speaker 2: man linebacker kind of guy from the Raiders. Shouldn't be
- 1:59Speaker 2: whipping you all that bad. I'm a little excited about
- 2:04Speaker 2: where they are after that game, but if I was
- 2:06Speaker 2: a Vikings fan, I'd be freaking out because– Their backup
- 2:10Speaker 2: offensive linemen in there who are for Derrissaw and Ryan Kelly,
- 2:13Speaker 2: the center, they can't get it done. J.J. McCarthy clearly
- 2:16Speaker 2: is not ready to get it done when the circumstances
- 2:20Speaker 2: are not perfect around him. So that's a red alert
- 2:23Speaker 2: for the Vikings to me more than it really is
- 2:24Speaker 2: like a big cheering on for the Falcons.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yo, I think it could get really weird for them.
- 2:29Speaker 1: McCarthy is now hurt. Maybe you know off the top
- 2:33Speaker 1: of your head who that means is going to be
- 2:35Speaker 1: the quarterback.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Carson Wentz.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Oh, that's right. I did see Prince Harry on the sideline.
- 2:42Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Right?
- 2:44Speaker 1: He started. I don't think I fully realized how much
- 2:46Speaker 1: Carson Wentz looked like Prince Harry until I saw him
- 2:49Speaker 1: on the sideline of that game. And I was like,
- 2:50Speaker 1: what's Prince Harry doing there? And I was like, damn,
- 2:52Speaker 1: wait a minute. Is that Carson Wentz?
- 2:55Speaker 2: I saw something. He's about to break a record for
- 2:58Speaker 2: most consecutive seasons starting a game for a different team.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I think he's about to hit six teams in six seasons.
- 3:05Speaker 2: since that Eagles template. Honestly, you could have told me
- 3:07Speaker 2: that he hasn't played since Jalen Hurts took his job,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and I would also believe that too.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Okay, so he has played for the Eagles. He has
- 3:16Speaker 1: played for the Chiefs. He has played for the Colts.
- 3:22Speaker 1: He is now playing for the Vikings. Who are the
- 3:26Speaker 1: other two?
- 3:28Speaker 2: The Commanders is one.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Oh, that's right.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That did happen. Was he in the Rams like the
- 3:34Speaker 2: zombie year when they had Baker and stuff like that? Yes,
- 3:37Speaker 2: he was.
- 3:37Speaker 1: He was. Yes, he was. Yo, so what's wild about
- 3:40Speaker 1: this is I never thought he was terrible. Like, he
- 3:46Speaker 1: is a clear example of what happens when people don't
- 3:48Speaker 1: like you that much. Because you can figure this out
- 3:51Speaker 1: in some other way. Like, I mean... He lost his
- 3:54Speaker 1: job to Jalen Hurts. By the way, he should have
- 3:57Speaker 1: lost his job to Jalen Hurts. But Jalen Hurts is
- 4:01Speaker 1: get the job and keep it guy. Not I ran
- 4:04Speaker 1: you off your corner guy. Right. He ran him off.
- 4:08Speaker 1: In fact, wasn't that part of what we were thinking?
- 4:10Speaker 1: Is that part of what got Doug Peterson fired? Was
- 4:13Speaker 1: that he was like, no, no, no. We're going with
- 4:15Speaker 1: this dude. And they was like, what are you, crazy?
- 4:17Speaker 1: And then look what happened.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it really is fascinating, though, because, dude,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I remember– Well, shoot, I mean, I was about to say,
- 4:25Speaker 2: it feels like the other day, but this is what,
- 4:27Speaker 2: eight years ago now when people are doing the Wentz
- 4:29Speaker 2: versus Dak wars. And, uh, uh, like Carson got a
- 4:33Speaker 2: big contract extension. Like that was market rate at the time.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Like you said, he wasn't bad, but the thing is
- 4:39Speaker 2: like his body just died on him. Cause he was
- 4:41Speaker 2: such a, he was a powerhouse, like athlete, uh, big
- 4:44Speaker 2: arm fast, but you know, not the most like, uh,
- 4:48Speaker 2: I guess detailed guy sometimes between the numbers because he
- 4:51Speaker 2: Like that last season he had, that was huge. They
- 4:53Speaker 2: were really only good on third down, but shoot, that's
- 4:56Speaker 2: enough to lead an offense that can get you somewhere
- 4:58Speaker 2: close to the Super Bowl. And then all the injuries happen.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And then people was like, eh, only tolerated you because
- 5:03Speaker 2: you had the big arm and you're running four or five.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Now that you're not doing that no more, you might
- 5:07Speaker 2: got to get out of here.
- 5:09Speaker 1: All-time weird quarterback draft 2016. Jared Goff, Carson Wentz are
- 5:14Speaker 1: the top two picks. A gentleman that some of you
- 5:17Speaker 1: may remember, but probably don't. Paxton Lynch, the first round
- 5:21Speaker 1: pick to Stephen Jones, had to save Jerry from taking,
- 5:24Speaker 1: who was out of the league in like 30, 45 minutes.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I can't even remember exactly.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I don't even think he had 150 passing attempts in
- 5:32Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yo, hold on. I forgot who else was in this draft.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Christian Hackenberg.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Oh, wow. Connor Cook. I forgot. But the guy, the
- 5:40Speaker 1: guy who turned out to be the guy. Dak Prescott
- 5:45Speaker 1: fourth round pick hold on Jacoby Brissett was a third
- 5:48Speaker 1: round pick in that draft Cody Kessler was a third
- 5:50Speaker 1: round pick in that draft then we get to Connor
- 5:52Speaker 1: Cook and yeah Dak Prescott who I I have tried
- 5:58Speaker 1: to figure out for a long time how it is
- 6:00Speaker 1: that he slipped that far in the draft like two-time
- 6:02Speaker 1: first team all SEC quarterback had the size has the
- 6:06Speaker 1: physical tools and I think it just really came down
- 6:09Speaker 1: to one thing. And some of you are going to
- 6:11Speaker 1: say he caught a DUI and that's part of it.
- 6:14Speaker 1: But you know what it was.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Which is funny because he's got the temperament that they like,
- 6:18Speaker 2: you know.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But that that that. Hold on.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Hold on. Hold on. For those of you who don't
- 6:24Speaker 1: know the thing that I'm talking about. These white boys
- 6:27Speaker 1: whooped his ass at Panama City Beach during spring break
- 6:30Speaker 1: one time, but it was caught on video. I mean,
- 6:32Speaker 1: they whooped his ass. And I feel like it was
- 6:36Speaker 1: the fair one, though. I don't want to say they
- 6:37Speaker 1: whooped his ass like he got jumped. He squared up
- 6:40Speaker 1: and just got his ass kicked, and you just had
- 6:41Speaker 1: to decide whether that was a man that you could
- 6:43Speaker 1: follow into battle.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Which is fair, because I swear, someone brings up that
- 6:49Speaker 2: video to me at least twice a year, and that
- 6:51Speaker 2: happened 10 years ago, dog. It was a legendary ass whooping,
- 6:55Speaker 2: but The Dak Prescott pick is fascinating to me because
- 6:59Speaker 2: it was kind of like they just said, eh, okay,
- 7:01Speaker 2: I guess we'll do it. Because for those who don't
- 7:03Speaker 2: remember with the draft that year, that was the last
- 7:05Speaker 2: year that teams weren't allowed to trade their compensatory picks.
- 7:10Speaker 2: If you have a free agent who signs somewhere to
- 7:13Speaker 2: another team, the following year you get a pick. So
- 7:16Speaker 2: the Cowboys, they had this fourth round compensatory pick that
- 7:18Speaker 2: they couldn't trade. So they tried to get Paxton Lynch,
- 7:21Speaker 2: couldn't do it. They tried to trade for Connor Cook.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Couldn't do it. So they're sitting here with this fourth
- 7:25Speaker 2: round pick that they can't trade. They need a backup
- 7:27Speaker 2: for Tony Romo. They're like, all right, let's just take
- 7:30Speaker 2: Dak Prescott. He's the last one.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And he took his job. Also, they had, everybody says
- 7:35Speaker 1: the greatest thing to have is a young quarterback that's
- 7:38Speaker 1: good on a cost control contract. And they had that.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And Dak Prescott was like, enough of that. I'm the
- 7:47Speaker 1: new Kirk Cousins. I'm getting every dime of surplus. And
- 7:51Speaker 1: shout out to Ryan. for letting us know it was
- 7:55Speaker 1: at a Waka Flocka Flame concert that Dak Prescott got
- 8:00Speaker 1: tuned up by those Caucasians.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Not at the Waka concert. You can fight at the
- 8:05Speaker 2: Waka concert, but you can't get beat up by white
- 8:07Speaker 2: people at.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The Waka concert. I guess that means that Dak ain't
- 8:10Speaker 1: got no hands.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Okay. Okay.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You get it?
- 8:18Speaker 2: I get it. I get it.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah. I've heard that song before. Yeah. I'm 31. That's
- 8:25Speaker 2: very much my era. You know?
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Fair.
- 8:29Speaker 1: It's wild to think how old that song is now. But,
- 8:31Speaker 1: you know, I just had to throw it out there.
- 8:33Speaker 1: No hands. But we got to there because we talked
- 8:37Speaker 1: about J.J. McCarthy being hurt. And it's already week three.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And we got a lot to talk about with quarterbacks
- 8:43Speaker 1: being hurt. It looks like Jaden Daniels might not play
- 8:47Speaker 1: in week three. Joe Burrow looks like he won't play
- 8:53Speaker 1: in 2025. We got Brock Purdy. He looks like he's
- 8:58Speaker 1: going to be out for a minute. I've seen a
- 9:01Speaker 1: few people try to hypothesize exactly why it is that
- 9:04Speaker 1: all the quarterbacks are getting hurt. I don't have the
- 9:07Speaker 1: answer for that right there. I do think the Joe
- 9:10Speaker 1: Burrow one is interesting because Joe Burrow, and I'm curious
- 9:14Speaker 1: what you think about this. You are somebody that knows
- 9:16Speaker 1: more actual football than I do. What I remember the
- 9:20Speaker 1: first time I saw like the 2019 LSU Joe Burrow,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I watched him play one series early in the season
- 9:28Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, okay. If they beat Alabama,
- 9:33Speaker 1: they're going to win the national championship and he's going
- 9:36Speaker 1: to be um the number one pick in the draft
- 9:39Speaker 1: he's going to win the Heisman and what I saw
- 9:41Speaker 1: was a dude that moved really well in the pocket
- 9:45Speaker 1: like not running fast but he dropped back he move
- 9:49Speaker 1: up he go to the side he keep his eyes
- 9:51Speaker 1: down the field he do all of those things and
- 9:54Speaker 1: he get it done but that is also a more
- 9:58Speaker 1: positive end of one of the more damning characteristics of
- 10:02Speaker 1: quarterback and have which is takes too long to throw
- 10:06Speaker 1: right He holds the ball for a long time. He
- 10:09Speaker 1: gets great results in holding the ball for a long time, right?
- 10:12Speaker 1: He can overcome it. And normally you need to be
- 10:14Speaker 1: like a Cam Newton, huge physical specimen to be the
- 10:18Speaker 1: guy that overcomes holding the ball for that long. No,
- 10:20Speaker 1: Joe Burrow does it by getting it done just in
- 10:23Speaker 1: time and being willing to get the dog shit knocked
- 10:25Speaker 1: out of him in the process. And this is going
- 10:27Speaker 1: to shock you. but he misses a lot of games. Now,
- 10:30Speaker 1: I've seen people who blame the Bengals for not investing
- 10:33Speaker 1: in the offensive line, which is a fair point somewhat, right?
- 10:37Speaker 1: It does take us back to one of the great dilemmas.
- 10:40Speaker 1: The Lions and the Bengals in the same season in
- 10:42Speaker 1: the first round took probable Hall of Famers in Jamar
- 10:45Speaker 1: Chase and Panay Sewell. And no matter how good Jamar
- 10:48Speaker 1: Chase is, It's always been fair to ask if they
- 10:50Speaker 1: took the wrong guy, just because Joe Burrow keeps getting
- 10:52Speaker 1: knocked around. But the point I want to make, and
- 10:55Speaker 1: it's a point that if you listen to this show,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know I make all the time, sacks are a
- 10:58Speaker 1: quarterback's stat. He takes a lot of sacks, and he'll
- 11:02Speaker 1: do that if he is playing behind an eight-man offensive line,
- 11:04Speaker 1: because he's always going to be back there waiting. But
- 11:08Speaker 1: I also don't know how much they put around him. Like,
- 11:11Speaker 1: is this just going to be what it is, you think,
- 11:13Speaker 1: with him?
- 11:14Speaker 2: I think this is probably just what it is with
- 11:16Speaker 2: him for the future.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I mean.
- 11:19Speaker 2: The thing with Joe is, like, he's tried the I'm
- 11:23Speaker 2: not going to drop back there and get beat up
- 11:27Speaker 2: when it was early last season and then I think
- 11:29Speaker 2: part of the season before when he was coming off
- 11:30Speaker 2: the wrist injury. It doesn't work for him. You know,
- 11:34Speaker 2: he turns into, like, this ultra conservative throwing for three
- 11:37Speaker 2: yards a pass. It just doesn't fit with his play style,
- 11:40Speaker 2: which is kind of interesting because it's not like he has, like,
- 11:43Speaker 2: the big arm. He's just got, like, good arm talent,
- 11:47Speaker 2: I guess, where you can just kind of put it
- 11:48Speaker 2: in spots where he needs to, but, uh, like that
- 11:51Speaker 2: lack of like high end physical talent. Like there's a
- 11:54Speaker 2: reason why like Lamar and Josh Allen can play like that.
- 11:56Speaker 2: They don't, they don't really miss games, you know, because
- 11:59Speaker 2: they've got the talent to get away from those hits
- 12:01Speaker 2: and not take the big hits. But Joe, when it
- 12:03Speaker 2: gets to sit in duck mode and he's waiting that
- 12:05Speaker 2: one last second for Jamar chase to hit, like the,
- 12:08Speaker 2: to pass that second defender window. So we can go
- 12:10Speaker 2: off for a seven yard touchdown. That's when he's getting crushed.
- 12:12Speaker 2: And especially when they got the backup offensive lineman in, uh, who's, uh,
- 12:17Speaker 2: They got torched by Jacksonville in the first half. I
- 12:20Speaker 2: just think this is probably always what it's going to be,
- 12:22Speaker 2: but it's not like you can get rid of that.
- 12:25Speaker 2: As long as you can just mitigate some of the
- 12:26Speaker 2: damage up front and just keep spamming picks to the
- 12:29Speaker 2: offensive line and hope those guys stay healthy, it's about
- 12:32Speaker 2: all you can do because I don't really know where
- 12:33Speaker 2: else you would go from here.
- 12:35Speaker 1: This is, to me, the interesting Joe Burrow question, and
- 12:39Speaker 1: I say this as a guy who enjoys Joe Burrow.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is all good with me. I like his get-downs.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I like the way he plays. I just want to
- 12:49Speaker 1: point out that I have never seen Joe Burrow be
- 12:55Speaker 1: successful without excellent talent to get the ball to, right?
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's not his fault that he has excellent talent, and
- 13:08Speaker 1: I'm not sure that everybody could do as well as
- 13:12Speaker 1: he can with the excellent talent that we're discussing, but Look, man,
- 13:16Speaker 1: it is entirely possible that we'll look back at 2019
- 13:19Speaker 1: LSU as having three Hall of Famers on offense, a quarterback,
- 13:24Speaker 1: and two wide receivers. It almost looks like a foregone conclusion.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Imagine if somebody in the NFL was throwing to Jamar
- 13:31Speaker 1: Chase and Justin Jefferson, who, if I'm not mistaken, might
- 13:34Speaker 1: have even been the number three receiver on that team, right?
- 13:37Speaker 2: He was definitely number two, yeah. Yeah, right.
- 13:40Speaker 1: But that's what he had, and what we saw was
- 13:42Speaker 1: maybe the greatest college offense that there has ever been.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That first year with the Bengals, before he got hurt,
- 13:49Speaker 1: it was cool, but it sure looked a lot different
- 13:51Speaker 1: once Jamar Chase showed up again, right? And then it's
- 13:55Speaker 1: Jamar Chase and it's Tee Higgins and Joe Mixon was
- 13:58Speaker 1: still giving you something in the backfield.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Tyler Boyd was the wide receiver three for a little bit.
- 14:02Speaker 2: He still had something in the tank, you know? Right.
- 14:04Speaker 1: So the question to be asked is, I think it's
- 14:07Speaker 1: fair to say, or to question whether or not the
- 14:09Speaker 1: Bengals have over-invested in receivers, you know, in a salary
- 14:14Speaker 1: cap sport, right? We were like, you got to give
- 14:16Speaker 1: the money to Trey Hendrickson, but we're like, hey, they
- 14:18Speaker 1: decided to give the money to T. Higgins, so how
- 14:20Speaker 1: do we figure this out? But, and I want to
- 14:23Speaker 1: be very clear about this.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I'm not out here saying that the Bengals know what
- 14:29Speaker 1: they're doing. I don't want.
- 14:30Speaker 2: You to think that I'm automatically giving them the benefit
- 14:34Speaker 2: of the doubt.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's one of those blink two times
- 14:39Speaker 1: if you're okay, Beaumont. Y'all been listening to this show.
- 14:41Speaker 1: You know how I feel about this. But what if
- 14:43Speaker 1: the Bengals decided that actually Joe Burrow is in the
- 14:47Speaker 1: category of the Kirk Cousins in that you need to
- 14:52Speaker 1: get it cracking around them. to really make it happen.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Which, which is ultimately fine. Cause like you have proof
- 15:00Speaker 2: that this can, like you have proof that, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 2: if I got Joe Burrow and a dude or two
- 15:04Speaker 2: on the outside, we can have the best passing game.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Like pretty comfortably. I mean, you do even, what's kind of,
- 15:10Speaker 2: messed up and fun about the bangles as someone who's
- 15:13Speaker 2: not a bangles fan is their defense being so bad
- 15:16Speaker 2: has just produced like some incredible like fever hero ball
- 15:20Speaker 2: from burrow chase and higgins where they're just like bro
- 15:22Speaker 2: we gotta have it on this drive every drive uh
- 15:25Speaker 2: like the charge the chargers game last year uh where
- 15:29Speaker 2: justin herbert had a big game against their defense and
- 15:30Speaker 2: then eventually jamar chase and t higgins said no no
- 15:33Speaker 2: no no we're the we're the superstars here we gotta
- 15:35Speaker 2: drag it across the finish line but that's not really
- 15:38Speaker 2: a sustainable way to like win games. It's fun to watch,
- 15:40Speaker 2: but when you get down to it, their defense just
- 15:43Speaker 2: isn't good enough. Before the Jaguars Jaguared out and couldn't
- 15:46Speaker 2: do that, couldn't finish the game as they wanted to,
- 15:49Speaker 2: they were moving the ball pretty well. And then Joe
- 15:51Speaker 2: Flacco and the Browns were moving the ball pretty well too.
- 15:53Speaker 2: So it's kind of hard to parse where you go
- 15:56Speaker 2: with your resources here because obviously he needs offensive line
- 16:00Speaker 2: help if he's going to be the guy that's going
- 16:02Speaker 2: to play like he is. And that's the best way
- 16:03Speaker 2: for him to utilize his talent. So you got to
- 16:06Speaker 2: honestly continue to enforce that by getting off into the linemen,
- 16:09Speaker 2: but man, this defense, like, dude, you're not serving Lamar
- 16:12Speaker 2: Jackson or Derrick Henry, so I guess you gotta keep
- 16:14Speaker 2: trying to score 40 points a game. It's a tough
- 16:17Speaker 2: life to live.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Yeah, but you gotta, at the very least, you gotta
- 16:21Speaker 1: go get that, get a tackle, left or right, right?
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 1: I talked about this on the show, I could be wrong, man,
- 16:27Speaker 1: but I feel like the hit rate on them tackles
- 16:31Speaker 1: is high, man.
- 16:33Speaker 2: They drafted one last year, but he was hurt this week.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Amarius Mills from Georgia. Yeah. I mean, that was the
- 16:39Speaker 2: thing at Georgia. He was hurt a lot. When he's
- 16:41Speaker 2: on the field, he's incredible. But you got to be
- 16:43Speaker 2: on the field, bro.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Yeah, so one thing that's always interesting about the Bengals,
- 16:47Speaker 1: and you know, historically, they were known for drafting Big
- 16:50Speaker 1: Ten players because they did not invest in scouts. So
- 16:53Speaker 1: they just got a lot of guys that were very close.
- 16:58Speaker 4: But you would think that for a school that was
- 17:00Speaker 4: as decidedly cheap or not a school, but a team
- 17:04Speaker 4: that's as decidedly cheap as they are, you would think
- 17:07Speaker 4: their college game would.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Be so on point, right? Because they got to get
- 17:11Speaker 1: the most out of these cats when they don't cost
- 17:13Speaker 1: no money. No, it doesn't really seem to go that way,
- 17:17Speaker 1: but it feels like everybody else sees a left tackle,
- 17:19Speaker 1: gets a left tackle. Problem solved, right? The whatchamacallem, the Chargers,
- 17:24Speaker 1: they drafted two left tackles in four years.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it did. And look, I should... rephrase some
- 17:32Speaker 2: of what I said about the Bengals because it's not
- 17:35Speaker 2: like they haven't tried to put defenders into, tried to
- 17:39Speaker 2: put resources into this defense where, you know, you've seen
- 17:42Speaker 2: the talent walk out over the years. Guys like Jesse
- 17:44Speaker 2: Bates in Atlanta, DJ Reader, Jermaine Pratt, who has some
- 17:48Speaker 2: good years for them. So they've tried, you know, they've
- 17:51Speaker 2: got two first round picks on the defensive line in
- 17:53Speaker 2: Jamar Stewart and Miles Murphy since then. They've got another
- 17:57Speaker 2: second round pick in Chris Jenkins Jr. They've got a
- 17:59Speaker 2: second round pick at linebacker Demetrius Knight They've got a
- 18:02Speaker 2: multitude of first, second, and third-round picks in the defensive backfield.
- 18:05Speaker 2: This is all in the past three or four years.
- 18:07Speaker 2: So they have really, really tried to put talent. They
- 18:10Speaker 2: just missed every single pick that they've tried on defense
- 18:16Speaker 2: they've missed so far in the past three or four years.
- 18:19Speaker 2: So they've got to keep playing Big 12 ball. That's
- 18:22Speaker 2: all they've got.
- 18:22Speaker 1: So I'm going to throw a couple things out here
- 18:24Speaker 1: for people. If you did not know this about Amarius Mims,
- 18:27Speaker 1: here are his dimensions from the combine. six foot seven
- 18:32Speaker 1: and three quarters, 340 pounds. and had the nerve to
- 18:38Speaker 1: run a 5.07 in the 40s. That is terrifying. Did
- 18:44Speaker 1: you see, what was his name, Josh Simmons, when he
- 18:46Speaker 1: went and got that dude on the interception in the
- 18:49Speaker 1: Chiefs-Eagles game? And Josh Simmons is the Chiefs' rookie left tackle.
- 18:53Speaker 1: He went to Ohio State. And one of my favorite
- 18:55Speaker 1: things in the NFL is anything that allows one of
- 18:58Speaker 1: these linemen to have to stretch it out or run
- 19:01Speaker 1: for like, get the... where the height matters, right? And
- 19:04Speaker 1: so they're stretching those legs out and they have time
- 19:06Speaker 1: to get up some speed. Hey, man, I can't imagine
- 19:09Speaker 1: how much it hurt that dude to catch that shoulder
- 19:10Speaker 1: and them thighs from that big old dude.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Bro, he tore his patella tendon less than a year ago.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That is the crazy thing to me. Out of Ohio
- 19:21Speaker 2: State last year, he tore his patella tendon in October
- 19:23Speaker 2: or November in the middle of their season. And You know,
- 19:27Speaker 2: because Nate Tice, who I do the show with, Football 301,
- 19:30Speaker 2: we were kind of looking at him this summer like, man,
- 19:33Speaker 2: he's a freak athlete. Like, what if he's one of
- 19:35Speaker 2: those guys like an Adrian Peterson type where, oh, you know,
- 19:37Speaker 2: I'm Wolverine. I'm back in a second. And then he
- 19:40Speaker 2: was back, full participant for the first day of full
- 19:43Speaker 2: pads of Chiefs training camp. I was like, what? I
- 19:47Speaker 2: used to know that Patel intended to tear his career under.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And you're back in like 10 months? Full speed, full pads? Like, no,
- 19:54Speaker 2: that boy's built different. But that's one guy. Get pad about,
- 19:57Speaker 2: you know, a few more of those. And maybe we
- 19:59Speaker 2: can start talking about the Chiefs getting back to where
- 20:01Speaker 2: they used to be. Because I hate watching that now.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I hate it.
- 20:03Speaker 1: It's so boring. Yeah, we talked about this. It feels
- 20:05Speaker 1: like work. Like I say, it's like watching your favorite
- 20:08Speaker 1: artist perform. a little bit past their prime. But I
- 20:10Speaker 1: want to ask this right fast about the Bengals, though.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Perhaps the solution is, I feel like they don't have
- 20:15Speaker 1: nearly as many arrestable players as they used to. Is
- 20:18Speaker 1: that what it feels like? I don't feel like we
- 20:21Speaker 1: talk about them like maybe they need to started getting
- 20:24Speaker 1: some cats living on the edge a little bit more, right?
- 20:27Speaker 1: Like Vontaze Perfect, who, by the way, is coaching people now.
- 20:29Speaker 1: He did not count as arrestable, but he played football
- 20:33Speaker 1: as though he was arrestable. If I am not mistaken,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I saw that Vontaze Perfect was coaching somewhere now. Let
- 20:39Speaker 1: me look this up to make sure that I have
- 20:41Speaker 1: not completely lost my mind. But I saw him doing
- 20:44Speaker 1: something that I was like, there's no way that Vontaze
- 20:48Speaker 1: Perfect is doing this.
- 20:50Speaker 2: At UNLV?
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yes, he is. He's a defensive analyst. That's right. My bad.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I did not get this wrong. Of course, maybe the
- 20:58Speaker 1: argument is the only place that you could get Vontaze
- 21:01Speaker 1: Perfect as a coach is in Las Vegas. But Paul Gunther,
- 21:06Speaker 1: former defensive coordinator at the Bengals, brought Perfect. That tells
- 21:12Speaker 1: you that Vontaze Perfect is one of these guys that
- 21:14Speaker 1: if you know him, you just love him.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes. Once he's your guy, he's your guy.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And there's nothing that anyone can say. Look, I know
- 21:22Speaker 2: what you saw is bad, but trust me. Once you
- 21:23Speaker 2: get around him a little bit, it'll be okay. It'll
- 21:26Speaker 2: be okay. And Burfik was fascinating because I remember watching–
- 21:30Speaker 2: he was one of the first YouTube athletes that we
- 21:33Speaker 2: kind of got captured with as far as people in
- 21:36Speaker 2: my generation just trying to figure out what's out there.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And I thought that– I remember so specifically there was
- 21:43Speaker 2: this video the highlight video was like Fonte's birthday. Cause he,
- 21:46Speaker 2: could he be the next Ray Lewis? And you watch
- 21:48Speaker 2: those clips. You're like, shoot, I don't know. Maybe, maybe
- 21:51Speaker 2: he could. And then he came out at the combine
- 21:54Speaker 2: around five second 40 dog.
- 21:57Speaker 1: He is the best player. He's the best college player
- 22:01Speaker 1: I've ever seen that the entire league said, no thanks
- 22:05Speaker 1: to him. As I recall, he made it all the
- 22:10Speaker 1: way down. the end.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Yeah, he was undrafted.
- 22:15Speaker 1: He was undrafted. He was a first team All-American as
- 22:20Speaker 1: a junior. He got invited to the combine.
- 22:26Speaker 2: He was amazing. He was a really good college player.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yes. No, I cannot imagine what, first of all, I
- 22:31Speaker 1: can't imagine what it was like to try to coach him.
- 22:33Speaker 1: And he had this pension, but he's illegal hits that
- 22:35Speaker 1: of course, the most memorable thing that he did in
- 22:38Speaker 1: his time in Cincinnati was on that. It was that
- 22:42Speaker 1: last drive against the Steelers that may or may not
- 22:45Speaker 1: have changed Antonio Brown's life forever. It was the end
- 22:49Speaker 1: of that game. They had AJ McCarron at quarterback. I remember,
- 22:52Speaker 1: and they were set up to win it. And I'm
- 22:54Speaker 1: talking about how the bangles used to have arrestable players
- 22:57Speaker 1: and they I mean, they really used to have arrestable players,
- 23:00Speaker 1: but their thing was they like shopping for bargains and
- 23:03Speaker 1: they get a lot of open box specials and they
- 23:05Speaker 1: get dudes that was on the edge in ways that,
- 23:08Speaker 1: depending on who you were talking about, were okay. And
- 23:11Speaker 1: some of them were absolutely indefensible. But anyway, the end
- 23:14Speaker 1: of that game was Jeremy Hill making a fumble. Pac-Man
- 23:18Speaker 1: Jones losing it completely at the end, and Vontaze Burfeet
- 23:24Speaker 1: catching that 15-yard penalty. The three most bangle bangles on
- 23:29Speaker 1: the whole team. The most bangle bangles that they had,
- 23:33Speaker 1: and they all fell apart at the worst time.
- 23:37Speaker 2: That reminds me, a couple weeks ago, I've been reading
- 23:41Speaker 2: about Chris Henry Jr., you know, late Chris Henry. His
- 23:44Speaker 2: son is a monster football player. But I was reading
- 23:49Speaker 2: something that Pac-Man Jones had been raising.
- 23:52Speaker 1: That's right. He's like his play date. Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 2: And I was like, huh, that's interesting, isn't it? And
- 23:58Speaker 2: then I also read over the past few years, T.J.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Houshman has been getting a little bit more involved. and
- 24:03Speaker 2: helping him train and get ready for football stuff. So
- 24:06Speaker 2: I was like, I would love to know what some
- 24:09Speaker 2: of the conversations were there between TJ and Pac-Man about
- 24:12Speaker 2: steering this young man.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Well, look, man, that's because Chris Henry appears to be another.
- 24:17Speaker 1: You just got to be around him. And if you are,
- 24:20Speaker 1: you'll come to love this guy, right? That's how it goes.
- 24:23Speaker 1: By the way, check this text I just sent you.
- 24:25Speaker 1: I think it may be an explanation for the change
- 24:27Speaker 1: in direction for Vontaze Burfeet.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Ha, ha, ha.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Just like, just, hold on, I'm going to send you
- 24:36Speaker 1: another one. I believe that sometimes when you get changes
- 24:40Speaker 1: like these, it leave us with... With one explanation.
- 24:46Speaker 2: We all got a couple homies like that, man.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you know what I'm saying? Like, I can't
- 24:51Speaker 1: say this out loud, right? It's not fair to say
- 24:55Speaker 1: out loud, but that is exactly it. We all got
- 24:57Speaker 1: a couple homies that, I'll give you another example of
- 25:01Speaker 1: this on text. People was like, yo, man, y'all was wrong.
- 25:05Speaker 1: And I'm like, nah, something changed. And I think I
- 25:09Speaker 1: know what it was. You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes you guys, some of those friends of you
- 25:15Speaker 2: guys say, hey, why don't you put down some of
- 25:16Speaker 2: this drinking and some of this other stuff so we
- 25:18Speaker 2: get this stuff right, you know?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, hey man, let me run something by
- 25:23Speaker 1: you here, you know what I'm saying? But no, that's,
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think the Bengals need to... get back to their roots.
- 25:30Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 25:32Speaker 2: Little edge. They lost their edge.
- 25:34Speaker 1: That is... They lost their essence. They forgot what they
- 25:40Speaker 1: was in it for. That thing about Mike Brown. Mike Brown,
- 25:45Speaker 1: he got like a Father Flanagan sort of vibe. You
- 25:49Speaker 1: know what I mean? He wants to save the day,
- 25:53Speaker 1: though in real life, everything about him indicates that He
- 25:58Speaker 1: doesn't care about saving these people at all.
- 26:00Speaker 2: At all. They had like a scouting department with like
- 26:03Speaker 2: four people.
- 26:04Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. But also, yeah, but also, Mike
- 26:09Speaker 1: Brown's politics do not imply that he is here in
- 26:12Speaker 1: the name of the betterment of these hardscrabble youths.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I will say, I will say, if you want to
- 26:18Speaker 2: get a good laugh, the website Open Secrets, if you
- 26:21Speaker 2: ever look up Mike Brown and his donations, Boy, he's stingy,
- 26:26Speaker 2: even the people he likes. It's hilarious. Even the people
- 26:29Speaker 2: he likes, it's a drop in the bucket, dog. I
- 26:33Speaker 2: got a good laugh. Go look up Mike Brown's Open Secrets,
- 26:35Speaker 2: Political Nation. It's very funny. He's a penny pitcher, man.
- 26:39Speaker 1: He doesn't give it to anybody.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Anyway, this is a billionaire, dog. A billionaire.
- 26:45Speaker 1: I mean, to be fair, though, he's a billionaire, but
- 26:47Speaker 1: the money is all in the bank.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Right, right, right, right.
- 26:51Speaker 1: That's the one thing I do say is he is
- 26:53Speaker 1: only a billionaire- because he owns the Bengals, right? Like
- 26:59Speaker 1: that's the, that's it. Oh, oh, hold on. He gave, okay,
- 27:05Speaker 1: he gave $ 1, 700 to Lindsey Graham. Hold on, hold on,
- 27:08Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. He gave him, and I don't
- 27:10Speaker 1: know how this works, He gave him $ 5, 000 and that
- 27:14Speaker 1: same day took back $ 1, 700 of it.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Right?
- 27:18Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. He's just like this. He's just
- 27:22Speaker 2: like this. It's not just about you. Yeah, Bengals fans,
- 27:27Speaker 2: don't even take it personally. He's out here, people, he
- 27:30Speaker 2: wants to win elections. He's pulling back donations, you know?
- 27:35Speaker 1: Now, hold on, there's a Mike Brown in Cincinnati who
- 27:37Speaker 1: is listed as not employed, who gave $ 250 to Kamala Harris.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I don't think that that is the same Mike Brown. Nope,
- 27:44Speaker 1: this other one is listed as Cincinnati Bengals. This, by
- 27:49Speaker 1: the way, is why, first of all, I got a
- 27:50Speaker 1: number of reasons I don't give nobody money, but I
- 27:52Speaker 1: know why this has to be public, but I feel
- 27:55Speaker 1: like it shouldn't. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:57Speaker 2: It probably shouldn't be, but it's funny.
- 27:59Speaker 1: No, no, the problem is, like, the people, the type
- 28:01Speaker 1: of people.
- 28:02Speaker 2: It should be, it should be public.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah. My thing is this. The type of people I
- 28:05Speaker 1: would give money to, man, I'd never get a job again.
- 28:09Speaker 1: For somebody to have politics to make me actually give
- 28:12Speaker 1: them money? Man.
- 28:16Speaker 2: That'd be a canceled.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Dick time right now. I ain't giving no money anyway
- 28:22Speaker 1: just because whatever money I give them, it ain't going
- 28:24Speaker 1: to change nothing. I'm not going to give you enough
- 28:27Speaker 1: to get me no sway and therefore I'm not going
- 28:30Speaker 1: to give you enough to change anything that you do.
- 28:33Speaker 1: So you go ahead and you make that happen. I
- 28:36Speaker 1: feel like when you go to the Met now, they
- 28:37Speaker 1: don't charge you. They just let you make a donation.
- 28:40Speaker 1: And the first time I was there, I gave them
- 28:42Speaker 1: the full donation because I feel like I got, you know,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I got it. I'm doing this. Then I stopped and
- 28:46Speaker 1: thought about how much they stole. That's what I'm saying.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I was like, what am I doing?
- 28:51Speaker 2: What am I doing?
- 28:53Speaker 1: This is the last thing I'll say about the Met
- 28:55Speaker 1: before we go to break. I always say about the
- 28:56Speaker 1: Met because if you've never been in the Met, the
- 28:59Speaker 1: Metropolitan Museum, 81st and Fifth Avenue, New York City. The
- 29:04Speaker 1: Met has an incredible Egyptian exhibit. Like it is mind
- 29:10Speaker 1: blowing how dope the Egyptian exhibit is. And it leaves
- 29:13Speaker 1: me at a bit of a dilemma where I'm always like,
- 29:15Speaker 1: it is so terrible that they took this stuff from
- 29:19Speaker 1: the people it belonged to. They could easily give it back,
- 29:21Speaker 1: all this stuff. It is ridiculous. It is just terribly
- 29:24Speaker 1: unfair that it is in this museum. But what is
- 29:28Speaker 1: not terrible is that that museum is a 15 minute
- 29:31Speaker 1: bus ride away from my house. That part is actually
- 29:34Speaker 1: pretty nifty. So I can i can go in there
- 29:37Speaker 1: and give them a piece of my mind and not
- 29:40Speaker 1: pay no donation uh anyway coming up next we're gonna
- 29:44Speaker 1: talk about what's going on with tom brady and the

- 32:22Speaker 1: Night Football, showing Tom Brady in the box with the
- 32:26Speaker 1: headset on, with the coaches for the Raiders. And for
- 32:30Speaker 1: those of you who don't know, Tom Brady owns, I believe, 5%
- 32:33Speaker 1: of the Las Vegas Raiders. And that's actually a little
- 32:37Speaker 1: tricky with his $ 30- something million a year day job, which
- 32:41Speaker 1: is working for Fox, doing football for Fox.
- 32:44Speaker 2: And the reason is.
- 32:46Speaker 1: An advancement of sports broadcasting that John Madden brought in
- 32:50Speaker 1: is that prior to John Madden, the broadcasters would just
- 32:52Speaker 1: show up the day of the game and then go
- 32:54Speaker 1: call them. And then John Madden said, there's no way
- 32:56Speaker 1: that I could properly discuss a team on television without
- 33:00Speaker 1: having seen them practice and without having met with the coaches.
- 33:03Speaker 1: And so the broadcast teams now get time to meet
- 33:06Speaker 1: with the coaches and they like talk about stuff.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Oh, you know, it's like when the broadcasters are like,
- 33:12Speaker 1: look out for this guy. He was practicing this week.
- 33:14Speaker 1: The coaches like they get information that other people don't
- 33:17Speaker 1: get because it's with the understanding that you're not going
- 33:19Speaker 1: to say anything about it until you get on television. Right.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Like it's a it's a safe space is the way
- 33:24Speaker 1: that we'll put it.
- 33:25Speaker 2: And so there's a lot of stuff, too, you know.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Right. And so Tom Brady last year couldn't go to
- 33:29Speaker 1: those meetings. They couldn't do that stuff because he's the
- 33:32Speaker 1: he is a part owner. And so they changed those
- 33:36Speaker 1: rules a little bit. I don't know exactly how it goes,
- 33:39Speaker 1: but it raised questions when you see Tom Brady with
- 33:42Speaker 1: the headset on that he, through this time and through
- 33:47Speaker 1: doing these games, he will be talking to people who
- 33:51Speaker 1: work for teams that are then going to play for
- 33:53Speaker 1: the Raiders. right? He's going to have access to a
- 33:56Speaker 1: certain intel that it's fair to ask whether or not
- 33:59Speaker 1: he should have it. And so you got a lot
- 34:00Speaker 1: of questions from people who saw him in the box
- 34:03Speaker 1: with the headset during the game about that fact. Charles,
- 34:06Speaker 1: I don't know about you. My question about it was,
- 34:09Speaker 1: how annoyed are you if you were Chip Kelly? Because
- 34:12Speaker 1: that just feels meddlesome.
- 34:14Speaker 2: It does feel meddlesome. But I just don't understand what's
- 34:21Speaker 2: going on here with Tom in general. Like, It just
- 34:25Speaker 2: seems like he's got his hand in so much stuff
- 34:27Speaker 2: right now. And it's funny because you said it seems
- 34:31Speaker 2: complicated when he's got these conflicts of interest, but he
- 34:37Speaker 2: seems to be able to make it very uncomplicated by
- 34:40Speaker 2: just walking into a room and going, I'm Tom Brady.
- 34:45Speaker 2: And that works. And that's about it. Because last year,
- 34:49Speaker 2: he's talking to Ben Johnson when the Raiders are about
- 34:52Speaker 2: to have a head coaching vacancy, and he's broadcasting the game.
- 34:57Speaker 2: I'm like, you can't do that. That's not fair. And
- 35:02Speaker 2: if you read the reporting on The Athletic about their
- 35:06Speaker 2: acquisition of Geno Smith, the Raiders acquisition of Geno Smith,
- 35:10Speaker 2: Todd was very, very involved in that, in helping them
- 35:13Speaker 2: decide that Geno was the quarterback that they should go
- 35:15Speaker 2: after to maximize whatever this Pete Carroll window is going
- 35:18Speaker 2: to be. So You know, this is someone who is
- 35:21Speaker 2: already reported to be very, like, involved in, like, the
- 35:23Speaker 2: big decision-making processes now with the Raiders. And now he's, like,
- 35:26Speaker 2: wearing a headset during a game, and he's going to
- 35:28Speaker 2: go call another game this weekend. But, you know, he
- 35:32Speaker 2: smiles and he shows us seven Super Bowl rings, and
- 35:34Speaker 2: it seems like that seems to win a lot of
- 35:35Speaker 2: decision-makers over as far as allowing him to break the rules.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Because I don't know, like, if Greg Olsen decides to
- 35:40Speaker 2: start doing this, I don't know if it will go
- 35:42Speaker 2: all that well for him. But, you know, for Tom Brady,
- 35:45Speaker 2: it's a charmed life, I'll tell you what.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Oh, cool. First of all, Greg Olson ain't got no
- 35:49Speaker 1: give me get a piece of team money. Let's just
- 35:50Speaker 1: go ahead and throw that out there. If Greg Olson
- 35:53Speaker 1: get that money, it's because he hit the goddamn Powerball,
- 35:56Speaker 1: in which case he ain't going to be announcing no games, right?
- 35:58Speaker 1: Let's start there, okay? Number two, I am amazed at
- 36:06Speaker 1: the way that everybody is bending over backwards to create
- 36:10Speaker 1: a circumstance where Tom Brady can be a mediocre color commentator.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Because at least as of now, he's not especially good
- 36:19Speaker 1: at it. I do think he's good when he goes
- 36:22Speaker 1: on with Colin, right? And he kind of gives his
- 36:24Speaker 1: read on the state of the league or whatever because
- 36:26Speaker 1: he's so passionate about it. I think my criticism of
- 36:29Speaker 1: him as a color commentator is, it's just too important
- 36:33Speaker 1: to him, right? Like it's a game to us. He's
- 36:37Speaker 1: not having any fun at all when he's up there
- 36:40Speaker 1: watching that game and talking about it. Like when Baker
- 36:42Speaker 1: Mayfield made that point, which I thought was a fair one,
- 36:45Speaker 1: that it was a little looser after Tom left Tampa.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Tom was like, I thought the point was to win championships.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I mean, damn. Yeah. I hear you, brother. I do.
- 36:54Speaker 1: But at the same time, you have to like, you
- 36:57Speaker 1: got to understand this. So, so he, he's there for Fox.
- 37:01Speaker 1: They're paying him a zillion dollars. It's not particularly enjoyable
- 37:05Speaker 1: for anybody, especially not Greg Olson. Um, and so they've
- 37:11Speaker 1: been like all these, it's just the idea, I guess,
- 37:14Speaker 1: of being able to say that Tom Brady is on
- 37:16Speaker 1: the broadcast, but, I.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Don't care about that, man.
- 37:20Speaker 1: I don't care about that. No, I don't care about that.
- 37:22Speaker 1: And I want to say this to be fair to
- 37:24Speaker 1: Brady about not being that good at the job that
- 37:27Speaker 1: he has right now. And it's something that I thought
- 37:30Speaker 1: about when I was doing Game Theory for HBO, which
- 37:34Speaker 1: is we did two seasons of Game Theory. We did
- 37:38Speaker 1: 16 episodes. And that meant that I got to do
- 37:43Speaker 1: a television show like that a grand total of 17 times.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Like the only chance that you actually have to practice
- 37:50Speaker 1: is with the whole world watching. And so back in
- 37:53Speaker 1: the day, like take a guy like Phil Sims, for example,
- 37:56Speaker 1: Phil Sims had gotten himself up to the point of
- 37:58Speaker 1: being in the number one broadcast team, but that is
- 37:59Speaker 1: not where he started. He started doing like the one
- 38:03Speaker 1: o'clock kickoffs, just like everybody else. And then gradually, you know,
- 38:06Speaker 1: moved himself up. That's where these cats used to go.
- 38:09Speaker 1: That's not it anymore. Like the dudes that they want,
- 38:11Speaker 1: they walk in and boom, Tony Romo, you starting off
- 38:14Speaker 1: on the number one team. You remember when Jason Witten
- 38:17Speaker 1: was out there? He was so bad, he went and
- 38:19Speaker 1: played football again.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I forgot about that. I totally forgot about that.
- 38:26Speaker 1: And they said he tested really well, but you have
- 38:28Speaker 1: no other opportunity to practice doing that job except in
- 38:32Speaker 1: front of the whole world. And Tom Brady ain't got
- 38:34Speaker 1: no time to be practicing. He's too busy owning a team.
- 38:38Speaker 1: And I would like to say one last thing. I
- 38:40Speaker 1: can only take this to mean he really needs the money.
- 38:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Because why else are you doing all this, man?
- 38:49Speaker 2: Why not just be the owner and just hang out?
- 38:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah, like, I don't know what decisions he's made with
- 38:54Speaker 1: his money. You know, his old queen, she had all
- 38:57Speaker 1: the dough or whatever. But like, this is, they gave
- 39:00Speaker 1: you 5% of the NFL team, but you can't cash
- 39:03Speaker 1: that check.
- 39:04Speaker 2: But it's a different 5% because Mark Davis is so
- 39:08Speaker 2: tired of making mistakes on his own that Tom gets
- 39:10Speaker 2: to make real decisions. He's playing Madden. He gets to
- 39:14Speaker 2: have a stake in the team without the real financial
- 39:17Speaker 2: risk that someone like Mark Davis would be taking. It's crazy.
- 39:23Speaker 2: But now I feel like I'm getting slapped over the
- 39:26Speaker 2: head with this stuff because why do I need to
- 39:27Speaker 2: know that he's playing flag football saudi arabia like.
- 39:30Speaker 1: What yo what's going on there again this is making
- 39:34Speaker 1: me raise questions all.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Right either he's really that's a good one that's a
- 39:38Speaker 2: good one.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Either he's really greedy or he's got bills, right? And
- 39:45Speaker 1: if you have not seen this, there's going to be
- 39:46Speaker 1: some all-time great flag football league. And by the way,
- 39:49Speaker 1: now that nothing matters in the world anymore and we
- 39:51Speaker 1: don't care about these things, these guys can go over there.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Miles Garrett, Justin Jefferson, a lot of big-time current players.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Rob Gronkowski, who is not a current player, obviously. But
- 40:02Speaker 1: they're going to go over there and play flag football
- 40:03Speaker 1: in Saudi Arabia. And it wasn't that long ago that
- 40:06Speaker 1: we would be up in the grill about doing such
- 40:08Speaker 1: a thing. And we had all these questions about live golf.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Nothing matters anymore. They're going to go play flag football
- 40:16Speaker 1: in Saudi Arabia. And I bet everybody's getting eight figures
- 40:19Speaker 1: for it at least.
- 40:21Speaker 2: And people are going to watch, too. Not me. I'm
- 40:24Speaker 2: staying away from that.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Well, help me with this. If it's flag football, why
- 40:29Speaker 1: we need Miles Garrett? Because he's going over there to play.
- 40:34Speaker 2: You got to ask them. Is Miles Garrett just taking
- 40:36Speaker 2: a check? I don't know.
- 40:40Speaker 1: I don't understand that.
- 40:42Speaker 2: That just doesn't... Now, that's something I might be interested
- 40:45Speaker 2: in watching. Watching Miles Garrett catch a pass against someone,
- 40:48Speaker 2: but only like two plays. You can't be locked in
- 40:51Speaker 2: on that. If it gets on Twitter, I'll watch that then.
- 40:55Speaker 1: That is, I think, as far as I will go
- 40:57Speaker 1: on it. But I was just thinking... there's no way
- 41:01Speaker 1: that Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly want this. Like they're
- 41:05Speaker 1: doing their best job of selling like, yeah, okay, whatever.
- 41:08Speaker 1: But why do you need to be on the headset?
- 41:11Speaker 1: That is the same way I feel about Carly Irsay, Gordon,
- 41:16Speaker 1: who is the new owner of the Colts. He's Jim
- 41:21Speaker 1: Irsay's daughter. Irsay left the team to his three daughters.
- 41:23Speaker 1: She's the one that like calls shots. And, I thought
- 41:27Speaker 1: it was interesting that she said that she wanted to
- 41:30Speaker 1: be on the headset early because she needed to know
- 41:33Speaker 1: what kind of coaches she had, right?
- 41:34Speaker 2: Yeah. That was actually a really interesting interview that she
- 41:37Speaker 2: had about it.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:39Speaker 1: I thought it made sense for a week, though.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:42Speaker 1: It can't be like this all the time.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:46Speaker 1: That feels meddlesome. If Jerry Jones was on the headset,
- 41:51Speaker 1: on the sideline, talking about, I need to hear what
- 41:53Speaker 1: kind of man my coach is, We would not act
- 41:57Speaker 1: like that was nifty. We would not act like that
- 41:59Speaker 1: was cool.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Because even if you're not saying anything, it's your presence
- 42:03Speaker 2: that is a little bit too much. What's her name again? Carly?
- 42:09Speaker 1: Carly. Yes.
- 42:10Speaker 2: She actually said some cool stuff about how she was
- 42:12Speaker 2: learning a lot about play calls and how they go
- 42:16Speaker 2: in and some of the adjustments that are made on
- 42:18Speaker 2: the fly as play calls come in. But you could
- 42:21Speaker 2: go to a meet and and learn some of that stuff.
- 42:23Speaker 2: You know, you don't have to, you don't have to
- 42:25Speaker 2: sit here on Sunday on the sideline with the headset on,
- 42:28Speaker 2: just kind of walk up to the sidelines, listening to
- 42:31Speaker 2: all the coaches talk. And I'm sure that it's been
- 42:33Speaker 2: enlightening for her and maybe it will help them make,
- 42:35Speaker 2: you know, help her make more decisions in a more
- 42:38Speaker 2: productive manner for, for the organization as things go along here.
- 42:42Speaker 2: But you, you, you could save that for another day.
- 42:44Speaker 2: I don't know. It's just, I don't, I don't know what,
- 42:47Speaker 2: like if you're, if you're Pete Carroll, right. And you
- 42:49Speaker 2: have coached, So many different winning organizations across your time
- 42:55Speaker 2: as a coach. Different teams taking different forms. Why do
- 42:58Speaker 2: I need to listen to Tom Brady? Chip Kelly, he's
- 43:02Speaker 2: gotten to the NFL head coaching ranks, got to UCLA,
- 43:06Speaker 2: had the cachet to say, nope, I'm done with this
- 43:08Speaker 2: head coaching stuff. I'm about to go be the OC
- 43:09Speaker 2: at Ohio State. Why do I need Tom Brady on
- 43:12Speaker 2: the head? What value is he really adding that couldn't
- 43:14Speaker 2: be added on Monday? or two cents.
- 43:17Speaker 1: That's the, that's, I think the point, not that Tom
- 43:20Speaker 1: Brady doesn't have anything to contribute.
- 43:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:23Speaker 1: But we up here, we up here doing our jobs
- 43:26Speaker 1: right now, bro. Like I take that to mean that
- 43:31Speaker 1: Tom Brady, I feel like he bored. Right. I'll never forget.
- 43:38Speaker 1: When I was in college, I participated on the Honda
- 43:41Speaker 1: campus all-star challenge quiz bowl team. Right. You know, I
- 43:46Speaker 1: was a beast. Anyway, we had won a national championship
- 43:50Speaker 1: of some sorts. And so they honored us at halftime
- 43:52Speaker 1: of a football game, which I will be honest, made
- 43:55Speaker 1: me feel a little bit embarrassed. Right. But people were
- 43:58Speaker 1: very proud of us, apparently like, OK, cool. So I'm
- 44:01Speaker 1: sitting there with a dude that was on the team
- 44:02Speaker 1: with me and he was a dude that was in
- 44:05Speaker 1: the band. But for that semester, for some reason, he
- 44:07Speaker 1: was not participating with the band. And I'll just this
- 44:10Speaker 1: stuck with me forever. Like I actually found this to
- 44:12Speaker 1: be very profound is that I'm next to him. And
- 44:15Speaker 1: he looks at me and he says, this is the
- 44:20Speaker 1: first time that I have ever been at a football
- 44:24Speaker 1: game without an instrument. He had no idea. what to
- 44:30Speaker 1: do with himself if he was at a football game
- 44:32Speaker 1: and he was not playing the xylophone or, you know,
- 44:35Speaker 1: the instrument that he played. Like he had no idea
- 44:36Speaker 1: what to do. And I feel like that must be
- 44:38Speaker 1: Tom Brady, right? Like he's at these games and at
- 44:41Speaker 1: least the microphone gives him something to do. Like I
- 44:44Speaker 1: now imagine that when he's calling these games, like his insides,
- 44:48Speaker 1: it's like the fighting temptations in there. He has no
- 44:50Speaker 1: clue what in the world he's supposed to do at
- 44:53Speaker 1: a football game if he's not actually part of the action.
- 44:56Speaker 1: So now here he is getting in on the headset.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Yeah, that's kind of like what I don't, I guess
- 45:03Speaker 2: not what I kind of don't like, what I don't
- 45:04Speaker 2: like about Tom as a broadcaster and even like some
- 45:08Speaker 2: other broadcasters where it feels like every play needs to
- 45:11Speaker 2: be like a breakdown of something. Like, hey man, just
- 45:14Speaker 2: keep it moving. Like, I don't mean, you know, you
- 45:18Speaker 2: don't need to draw it up like when it's a
- 45:19Speaker 2: three-yard gain or explain like every little detail of what
- 45:21Speaker 2: happened because sometimes it starts bleeding to the next play
- 45:24Speaker 2: and it just kind of, it's boring to watch. Like,
- 45:26Speaker 2: I remember when When I stopped playing college football and
- 45:30Speaker 2: I started doing media work, I have some of my
- 45:32Speaker 2: friends be like, yo, you watch film for fun? That
- 45:35Speaker 2: used to be the most boring part of all of this.
- 45:38Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I know, I know. It's really not
- 45:41Speaker 2: that interesting, and it's not good on a broadcast either.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Gary Danielson is my favorite broadcaster, has been forever, because
- 45:49Speaker 2: he does such a good job blending. Here's a quick
- 45:53Speaker 2: two-second X and O thing every four plays, but most
- 45:55Speaker 2: of the time I'm here to make a burn chunk.
- 45:57Speaker 2: And that was a great broadcast for me, but some
- 45:59Speaker 2: of it feels too serious now.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Well, so this is what I think. I'm curious what
- 46:04Speaker 1: you think about the distinction I'm going to try to make.
- 46:07Speaker 1: There is a difference between teaching and explaining, right?
- 46:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 1: And so what you're talking about, and I do think
- 46:16Speaker 1: I see this from a lot of guys, they use
- 46:18Speaker 1: a little bit too much jargon, right? Oh, man, we
- 46:20Speaker 1: got a three-man shell here. It's a two-eye save.
- 46:22Speaker 2: Look, I— I like Dan and Lou, Lou Riddick and Olasky.
- 46:27Speaker 2: I like their work, but last night.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I'm like, whoa, boy, you're bringing out the jargon. Yeah, yeah,
- 46:32Speaker 1: they were doing a little too much, but I mean...
- 46:35Speaker 1: The God MC is John Madden, right? Yes. And for
- 46:38Speaker 1: the people who were too young to get anything close
- 46:40Speaker 1: to prime John Madden, even non-prime John Madden was it,
- 46:43Speaker 1: but that is the God MC of doing this. And
- 46:46Speaker 1: the thing that made Madden so good, you have to remember,
- 46:48Speaker 1: is that Madden derives from a time where the archetype
- 46:51Speaker 1: of a coach was not so much a CEO, but
- 46:54Speaker 1: was an actual factual teacher, right? And so John Madden
- 46:58Speaker 1: felt like a teacher at your school. And when he
- 47:00Speaker 1: did get in to explain, he had the clicker and
- 47:02Speaker 1: everything else, He wasn't saying what happened. He was showing you, hey,
- 47:08Speaker 1: cool thing about football. This is a zone dog. This
- 47:11Speaker 1: is what you do on a zone dog. Now watch
- 47:15Speaker 1: the zone dog. And be like, oh, okay. I get
- 47:19Speaker 1: where you're coming from, right? Like, I think that's the
- 47:22Speaker 1: key is you need to be, you need to know
- 47:25Speaker 1: how to teach your audience. And in a way, people
- 47:30Speaker 1: only care if you know more than them, if you're
- 47:32Speaker 1: willing to share.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Right?
- 47:34Speaker 2: Yes.
- 47:35Speaker 1: If you're not sharing, they resent you. But if you're
- 47:38Speaker 1: making it something we can all participate in, it's like, yo,
- 47:42Speaker 1: I got more food than I know what to do with.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Everybody likes that guy. You know what I'm saying? But
- 47:46Speaker 1: they just over there watching you eat? Nobody likes that guy.
- 47:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Well, see, that's why, like, I used... A lot of
- 47:52Speaker 2: people used to tell me I was crazy back in
- 47:54Speaker 2: the day when I said, like, Gary Danielson, I will
- 47:58Speaker 2: watch any game that he broadcasts. And people are like, oh,
- 48:00Speaker 2: you know, but he's kind of slow. Like, no, if
- 48:03Speaker 2: you listen... you will learn so much about like playing
- 48:07Speaker 2: quarterback when Gary's on there, because it's not, it's not
- 48:10Speaker 2: an overflow of information, but he'll like over the course
- 48:13Speaker 2: of a game, he'd be like, Oh, you know, so
- 48:14Speaker 2: they were running this coverage earlier and bang, now they
- 48:16Speaker 2: can run a switch up, switch up route here. And
- 48:18Speaker 2: they got loose for a touchdown. And then he, but
- 48:20Speaker 2: he keeps it lighthearted too. And he keeps it moving along.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Like that's kind of what we need to get back to.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Cause I do feel like football coverage in general has
- 48:26Speaker 2: gotten very serious sometimes. Like, and I like the data
- 48:30Speaker 2: and the numbers and stuff like that. Like I use
- 48:32Speaker 2: a lot in my work, but, You know, it's still
- 48:36Speaker 2: a game. You know, you should be able to have
- 48:37Speaker 2: a little bit of fun and laugh at what's going
- 48:40Speaker 2: on without every play or every drive or every game.
- 48:43Speaker 2: It's some referendum on the end of the world. Like
- 48:45Speaker 2: some of the stuff I'm seeing two weeks into the season. Like, bro,
- 48:49Speaker 2: y'all need to take a damn breath. Like, yeah, we
- 48:51Speaker 2: got 15 weeks to go.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Sports broadcast in general, but football broadcast in particular.
- 48:57Speaker 1: I really just want to watch this game. I don't
- 48:58Speaker 1: need that much data. Like I think in a number
- 49:02Speaker 1: of ways, we are really overrun with data. It's data
- 49:06Speaker 1: all over the screen. You got a ticker at the bottom,
- 49:09Speaker 1: depending upon what network you're watching. I don't need, and
- 49:12Speaker 1: I get why they do it, but the game does
- 49:16Speaker 1: then often feel secondary, and then as the game, is
- 49:20Speaker 1: going on, I don't, I don't watch football or enjoy
- 49:25Speaker 1: it as a puzzle to be solved. Though I am
- 49:28Speaker 1: often intrigued by how the puzzle works. I don't like,
- 49:32Speaker 1: that's not why I'm watching it. I'm watching it for
- 49:34Speaker 1: a good time. I want to throw something at you
- 49:36Speaker 1: right fast as you are an Atlanta Falcons fan. Like
- 49:39Speaker 1: you still do that. It's wild. And you know, I
- 49:43Speaker 1: want to give you proof that some places they'll love
- 49:46Speaker 1: you forever. Um, on three sports is reporting that Virginia tech, um.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 49:55Speaker 1: They just fired their head coach after losing to Georgia Tech.
- 50:00Speaker 1: But it says here, sources have told all three sports
- 50:02Speaker 1: that some Virginia Tech boosters push Vic to get coaching experience.
- 50:05Speaker 1: It would not surprise anybody in the industry if Vic
- 50:07Speaker 1: is a serious name at Virginia Tech and future coaching searches.
- 50:10Speaker 1: First of all, future coaching searches says a lot about
- 50:13Speaker 1: what you think. It says a lot about what you
- 50:16Speaker 1: think about the future of this program.
- 50:18Speaker 2: What future?
- 50:20Speaker 1: I guess for Vic, going back to Virginia Tech, that's
- 50:23Speaker 1: kind of like Barry Bonds in San Francisco, right? It
- 50:25Speaker 1: don't matter what you do, baby. It don't matter what
- 50:27Speaker 1: they say about you.
- 50:29Speaker 2: I actually did get into this last week. And the
- 50:32Speaker 2: first thing I thought was, Mike, you don't want to
- 50:35Speaker 2: be the coach that takes this job right now. Take
- 50:38Speaker 2: it after the next guy gets fired. You know, because
- 50:41Speaker 2: this dude, I'm an East Coaster through and through all
- 50:46Speaker 2: my life. Like this East Coast football shit, that's what
- 50:49Speaker 2: I know. Virginia Tech, like, I tell, like, my little
- 50:52Speaker 2: brother and his friends, like, yo, like, this used to
- 50:54Speaker 2: be a real deal college football program. Like, churning out
- 50:58Speaker 2: dudes to the NFL on a year-by-year basis. Like, you
- 51:02Speaker 2: go look up some of those guys, play Virginia Tech from, like, 2000,
- 51:05Speaker 2: or not even 2000. Like, let's call it, like, 1995 to, like, 2012. Like,
- 51:10Speaker 2: that stretch, they put a lot of dudes in the NFL.
- 51:13Speaker 2: And now it's nothing. Like, they stink. They lost to
- 51:17Speaker 2: South Carolina. They're trying to get this transfer stuff going.
- 51:20Speaker 2: So you fire your coach now. This next year ain't
- 51:22Speaker 2: going to be much better. So, yeah, go see if
- 51:24Speaker 2: you can build Norfolk State a little bit. Get some
- 51:26Speaker 2: wins and then maybe go to there.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I would get my practice up and then maybe look
- 51:30Speaker 1: at that job. But I think the expectation is that. OK,
- 51:35Speaker 1: so I think that this is a college football thing
- 51:37Speaker 1: that I would love to see studied a little more.
- 51:39Speaker 1: If somebody could figure out a way to do something
- 51:41Speaker 1: with the data and they do some data on this.
- 51:44Speaker 1: But there are very few fertile recruiting areas that are
- 51:48Speaker 1: truly no man's land. And the Tidewater is one of them.
- 51:51Speaker 1: It's not close to any big school. Like for the longest,
- 51:55Speaker 1: it's no longer the case because like Old Dominion, these
- 51:57Speaker 1: schools have jumped up. But for the longest, the closest
- 52:00Speaker 1: FBS school to the Tidewater was East Carolina. Neither of
- 52:04Speaker 1: the like neither of the Virginia schools are actually geographically
- 52:07Speaker 1: close to the Tidewater. And so when Virginia Tech was
- 52:12Speaker 1: running things is because they were the ones that got
- 52:14Speaker 1: the players out of the Tidewater. When Mack Brown was
- 52:17Speaker 1: winning at North Carolina, he was getting dudes out of Tidewater.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Like whoever gets that all of a sudden has this
- 52:23Speaker 1: spike in their fortune. So my guess is that Virginia
- 52:26Speaker 1: Tech looks at it. Mike will walk out every player
- 52:29Speaker 1: that he wants out of there. We get our money up, right?
- 52:32Speaker 1: Mike can go down there and then Mike can get
- 52:34Speaker 1: the players and then we'll be okay. And I hear you.
- 52:40Speaker 1: I'm just going to warn Mike about this because I
- 52:42Speaker 1: see what might happen here. OK, because, you know, Eddie
- 52:45Speaker 1: George is working at Tennessee State. Now he went and
- 52:47Speaker 1: took a job at Bowling Green.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Hey, Eddie might got this, man. He's pretty good.
- 52:51Speaker 1: He's good. He seems to be good. And the difference
- 52:53Speaker 1: between Tennessee State and the other black college jobs is
- 52:57Speaker 1: they're playing FCS. But I guess now other schools have
- 52:59Speaker 1: made this move, but they're playing FCS. um, at a
- 53:02Speaker 1: higher level, they were not playing in the swagger me act.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Like they were going against schools with a lot of
- 53:06Speaker 1: financial advantages over them and everything else. And he parlayed
- 53:09Speaker 1: that in the bowling green job. Um, I talked to
- 53:11Speaker 1: Eddie at the super bowl and he was like, look, man,
- 53:14Speaker 1: working here is a different kind of job, man. Like
- 53:16Speaker 1: this ain't Ohio state. He understood it, but he seemed to,
- 53:19Speaker 1: he seemed to understand what it was. He's also not
- 53:22Speaker 1: there anymore. Right. I don't know why he's not there anymore,
- 53:25Speaker 1: but he's not there anymore. I'm saying all that to say,
- 53:28Speaker 1: They're going to drive Mike a little bit crazy over
- 53:30Speaker 1: there at Norfolk State. I understand that. Like, if Deion
- 53:32Speaker 1: had left Jackson State and not been a jerk about it,
- 53:35Speaker 1: I wouldn't have said nothing. I know that they was
- 53:37Speaker 1: on some bullshit.
- 53:39Speaker 4: I don't know exactly what the bullshit was, but I
- 53:41Speaker 4: know it was some.
- 53:42Speaker 1: I understand you. And I'm just saying, Mike, don't let
- 53:46Speaker 1: the bullshit run you out before you get all the
- 53:48Speaker 1: game you need. You know what I'm saying?
- 53:52Speaker 2: Hey, it's a marathon. It's a marathon.
- 53:54Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, I'm telling you. Like, I know.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Let's just stack some wins.
- 53:57Speaker 1: I know they're going to be doing stuff down there.
- 53:59Speaker 1: You're not going to believe it. I understand that.
- 54:01Speaker 4: You might have to wash the clothes yourself.
- 54:03Speaker 1: I get that, too. But don't go too soon. Get
- 54:07Speaker 1: your game up. Then make the move.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah, I did not think that I was going
- 54:12Speaker 2: to hear a Tidewater reference on this podcast today. Someone...
- 54:16Speaker 2: Spent most of my life flipping between Maryland and North Carolina.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Got to tickle me a little bit. But, bro, it's
- 54:21Speaker 2: hard getting around out there. It's hard getting around out there.
- 54:25Speaker 2: There ain't shit. Like, I remember we were going to,
- 54:29Speaker 2: for my mom's birthday a couple years ago, we went
- 54:31Speaker 2: out to the Outer Banks for a couple days with
- 54:34Speaker 2: some family and friends. And my girlfriend, she was like, oh,
- 54:36Speaker 2: you know, I want to come down. I was thinking
- 54:38Speaker 2: about flying from New York. I'm like, just don't. Don't bother.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Because what I'm not about to do is go drive
- 54:44Speaker 2: an hour and a half one way to Virginia to
- 54:47Speaker 2: go pick your ass up and then drive an hour
- 54:49Speaker 2: and a half back just for two days. I'll tell you,
- 54:51Speaker 2: I couldn't make it. But it's really like that out there.
- 54:53Speaker 2: So if you can get them to come to you
- 54:55Speaker 2: instead of having to go to them. That'd be ideal.
- 54:58Speaker 1: The last thing we'll do here, I think you did
- 55:01Speaker 1: this on your podcast, so we can offer this up
- 55:03Speaker 1: on our podcast. And I don't know why this tickled
- 55:05Speaker 1: me so much, but tell the people what you thought
- 55:07Speaker 1: was going to happen after Michael Vick got arrested.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Oh, man. I thought that they were going to draft
- 55:16Speaker 2: Darren McFadden and hold down the fort until Mike Vick
- 55:18Speaker 2: got out of jail. But to be fair, I was
- 55:22Speaker 2: like 13 years. It was 2007, man. I was dumb
- 55:25Speaker 2: as hell. When that Matt Ryan pick came through, my
- 55:30Speaker 2: jaw dropped. I was like, what the hell? You guys
- 55:34Speaker 2: replaced Michael Vick that fast? And then Matt Ryan threw
- 55:37Speaker 2: a 64-yard touchdown pass on his first play, so things
- 55:39Speaker 2: were okay. You thought they were going to run it back.
- 55:42Speaker 2: I thought they were going to hold it down the
- 55:44Speaker 2: floor for him and keep the spot warm until he
- 55:46Speaker 2: got back. I had no idea how anything worked back then.
- 55:51Speaker 1: I don't know why that was so funny to me.
- 55:53Speaker 1: The way you said it the first time, he's like, Mike,
- 55:55Speaker 1: get out of jail.
- 55:56Speaker 2: We're just going to run it back. We got Darren McFadden.
- 56:00Speaker 2: He's going to be the next Adrian Peterson. Offensive line's
- 56:03Speaker 2: still pretty good. We're going to run for 4,000 yards
- 56:05Speaker 2: a year and maybe get to the Super Bowl.
- 56:08Speaker 1: You just treated it like Mike got hurt.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. That's kind of what it was.
- 56:14Speaker 1: You thought it was like back in the day Mike
- 56:15Speaker 1: went to fight in Korea and was just going to
- 56:18Speaker 1: come back after putting in his time and just get
- 56:21Speaker 1: back out there on the field.
- 56:22Speaker 2: Two years in federal prison might be a little bit
- 56:24Speaker 2: harder than Korea.
- 56:27Speaker 1: It's fair. It's fair. Man, they had that boy wearing
- 56:32Speaker 1: actual fascial stripes.
- 56:34Speaker 2: Yeah. He was in.
- 56:38Speaker 1: He was in jail for real. I will say this
- 56:40Speaker 1: about Darren McFadden right fast. You know, I have to
- 56:43Speaker 1: remember now that the years are passing. We're not at
- 56:46Speaker 1: the point where Darren McFadden is a guy that it
- 56:48Speaker 1: feels like there aren't that many of them left anymore
- 56:50Speaker 1: because the forecasting game has gotten so different. But hey, man.
- 56:55Speaker 1: There's some of y'all who of a certain age that
- 56:57Speaker 1: you do not understand that that was a stone cold monster.
- 57:04Speaker 1: My goodness.
- 57:05Speaker 2: That backfield. They had Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis too.
- 57:08Speaker 2: That was crazy, man. Crazy. The hype was crazy.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Tim Tebow should have been a zero-time Heisman Trophy winner
- 57:19Speaker 1: because after Arkansas won that game against the eventual national
- 57:24Speaker 1: champions who Darren McFadden ran for 200-something yards on a
- 57:26Speaker 1: rivalry weekend, there's your Heisman Trophy winner right there. Sorry, guys.
- 57:32Speaker 1: He was the runner-up the year before. He should have
- 57:35Speaker 1: got that Heisman that year. Absolutely should have.
- 57:41Speaker 2: One of the things that I remember from that year
- 57:43Speaker 2: was that was– I think that was the same season
- 57:47Speaker 2: when Ronnie Brown with the Dolphins, like the Wildcat formation.
- 57:51Speaker 1: It was the year before Ronnie got on it. McFadden
- 57:53Speaker 1: was on it first. Right, right.
- 57:55Speaker 2: Because I couldn't remember if they happened at the same time.
- 57:57Speaker 2: But that is just such a simple but genius idea.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Why am I handing it up? Why am I handing
- 58:03Speaker 2: it to the quarterback? Just give it to Darren right
- 58:04Speaker 2: off the bat and let him go run.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Yeah. And the thing with him was, the thing is,
- 58:08Speaker 1: he was a high school quarterback. So there was a
- 58:11Speaker 1: minimal threat. that he might be able to do something.
- 58:15Speaker 1: That boy was cold. Boy, I also remember he's the
- 58:18Speaker 1: last guy that I remember where negative on his draft
- 58:21Speaker 1: stock was all these damn kids. That was the concern.
- 58:26Speaker 1: And I also remember my buddy Chris Carter. Chris Carter
- 58:29Speaker 1: was doing ESPN one day. He's like, no, you got
- 58:31Speaker 1: to understand. If you take Darren, he come to your team,
- 58:34Speaker 1: Little Rock.
- 58:35Speaker 2: Is coming with him. Oh, shit. The entire town. Entire city.
- 58:46Speaker 1: The entire town is coming with him. And they all kid. But, oh, man,
- 58:50Speaker 1: he was a beast. Like, maybe I need to figure
- 58:52Speaker 1: out a way we can come up with that series.
- 58:54Speaker 1: Just college beasts. Like, there's something special about a college beast.
- 58:59Speaker 1: That was just like, no, no, no, boys. Sometimes the
- 59:02Speaker 1: college beast wasn't even like an All-America beast. Like, we
- 59:04Speaker 1: talked about Greg Jones the other day at Florida State.
- 59:06Speaker 1: College beast.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Yep.
- 59:08Speaker 1: Flat-out college beast.
- 59:10Speaker 2: Yeah. DJ Shockley, he's still good with Georgia fans to
- 59:13Speaker 2: this day, man. Not the best quarterback they've had since then, but, man,
- 59:18Speaker 2: just held down.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Somehow, the last black starting quarterback at the University of Georgia. Yeah.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Dan Newton. Deshaun Watson? No, no, no. We don't really
- 59:32Speaker 1: have a place for you guys to play quarterback. They
- 59:35Speaker 1: had a place for him just behind Jake Fromm.
- 59:38Speaker 2: They had this kid after Fields left. Right before Fields
- 59:42Speaker 2: and right after Fields. He was a backup. His name
- 59:44Speaker 2: was DeJuan Mathis and Yes. That's one of those guys
- 59:46Speaker 2: you can't even lie to yourself about. You try to
- 59:52Speaker 2: clean up some of the language around black quarterbacks, and
- 59:54Speaker 2: you watch someone like, man, man.
- 59:57Speaker 1: He was on tilt. He was on tilt. He was
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: out there like, I don't quite know what to do.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: He was a worse version of this, but when Jalen
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Milrow was so mad because Bill O'Brien said he was
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: a running back and not a quarterback, and I was like, yeah,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: that was... messed up. Not that I've ever said that
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: exact same thing. But it's because you're so good at running. Yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: That's what happened.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: What the hell were we talking about today? I don't
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: even remember how we got here.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: We got here because you thought that Michael Vick was
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: going to come back out of jail to play with
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Darren McFadden. And then Darren McFadden got us to... Actually,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: now I don't even know. But I do know that
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: your name is Charles McDonald. And you can check him out. Also,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: with our other friend of the program, Nate Tice, on
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Football 301, podcast for Yahoo Sports. My brother, I appreciate
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: you joining us here.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Absolutely, absolutely. I actually got one more little Raiders thing
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: from that era.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: The most famous football player from my high school is
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Darius Hayward-Bey. And he used to come back during some
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: of the summer workouts, and I got to say, he
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: was not the nicest guy to us. He was very passionate,
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: very passionate about our high school football team, but he
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: was not the nicest guy. So when we started dropping passes,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: we did keep track of them one season. Yeah, because...
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: kept track. It was very funny.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: I need to ask Dominique. No, Dominique did not play
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: with Darius Hayward-Bey. Oh, that's unfortunate. I would have been
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: curious to know what Dominique had to say about him.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: Damn.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: But my brother, I appreciate you. And ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: thanks so much for joining us here on The Right Time.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: We do this here three times a week. Ryan Brumley
