- 0:53Speaker 2: Lisa Odie, who are my co host of the show.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And ladies and gentlemen, we have we have. I'm going
- 1:01Speaker 2: to say a spectacular guest today. We we typically and
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'm not taking anything away from our past guest, but
- 1:11Speaker 2: I think this one is to me pretty special, and
- 1:14Speaker 2: I think Hollis is gonna do the intro. Yeah, we
- 1:17Speaker 2: got you know, West Virginia basketball legend Tennessee former Tennessee
- 1:22Speaker 2: volunteer basketball player first round draft pick Alexis Hornbooker. How
- 1:27Speaker 2: you doing doing well? Great? Doing great? Alexis one of
- 1:34Speaker 2: the interesting things that I have from being from West
- 1:39Speaker 2: Virginia playing in the NFL and and when people try
- 1:46Speaker 2: to talk to you about like what it's like, what
- 1:48Speaker 2: it's all of that? Can you can you kind of
- 1:53Speaker 2: give people the insight of what your experience in the
- 1:59Speaker 2: in the w n b A was and is to
- 2:03Speaker 2: you even today.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Because you can dream it. Right. Obviously a lot of
- 2:10Speaker 4: athletes do in all sports, but very few reached that
- 2:13Speaker 4: level or reach that that their goals when it comes
- 2:16Speaker 4: to that level, And so like when you hear your
- 2:19Speaker 4: name called or you see it go across the screen,
- 2:21Speaker 4: however it goes for you. For me being there and
- 2:23Speaker 4: hearing my name called at number four, overall, like I
- 2:29Speaker 4: was just cheasing from ear to ear full full disclosure,
- 2:34Speaker 4: though we won the night before and then the draft
- 2:37Speaker 4: was the next day, so I was also like no sleep,
- 2:42Speaker 4: So it was very surreal. But it's just this overwhelming
- 2:46Speaker 4: feel feelings but just like joy, elation and and even
- 2:50Speaker 4: that sigh of release like Okay, I'm here, you know
- 2:54Speaker 4: I'm going.
- 2:56Speaker 2: To ask one more tough question, probably, and then I'll
- 2:59Speaker 2: let everybody else jump in. When did you know that
- 3:05Speaker 2: you you were? You were that lady like you when
- 3:10Speaker 2: they call your name, you get out on the court
- 3:13Speaker 2: and you're like, oh, yeah, I can do this, and
- 3:16Speaker 2: not only can I do this, I could do it
- 3:18Speaker 2: at a high level. When did you get that moment
- 3:24Speaker 2: or did you get that moment?
- 3:26Speaker 4: Yeah? I got that moment and it happened really young
- 3:32Speaker 4: for me. Honestly, it happened I was like nine or ten,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and I started playing organized basketball and soccer when I
- 3:41Speaker 4: was four, and I did travel soccer too. But we
- 3:46Speaker 4: came back from a national Yboa tournament. We were the
- 3:48Speaker 4: first team from West Virginia to win. It ended up
- 3:52Speaker 4: in Sports illustrated faces in the crowd, and I'm just like, wow,
- 3:58Speaker 4: I'm actually I'm right.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Well, well, well you're more than all right for sure.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And I'm just going to start to here now again.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So sometimes we do our little barbershop, the base and
- 4:11Speaker 2: all that Missus Hollis and a lot of times were
- 4:15Speaker 2: here in West Virginia, and I guess any state would
- 4:17Speaker 2: do it. They always talk about who's the greatest basketball
- 4:21Speaker 2: football player? D D. I would say, this is my
- 4:25Speaker 2: opinion that that Lexus Hornbuckle is the greatest basketball player
- 4:32Speaker 2: men and women ever in the state of West Virginia.
- 4:35Speaker 2: How would you respond to that, Don't give me the
- 4:37Speaker 2: humble because you all work. Don't give me the humble.
- 4:42Speaker 4: You asking me to not give you something I would.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I would. I would definitely gonna argue that. You know,
- 4:51Speaker 4: you know, I'm not gonna disagree for sure, and I
- 4:54Speaker 4: would gladly, humbly accept that. I do definitely feel like
- 4:58Speaker 4: I put on I put in the word. And if
- 5:00Speaker 4: we're going back just looking at it statistically or on papers, yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 4: I think my resume.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Kind of because I mean, let's look at the paper though,
- 5:08Speaker 2: let's look at those statistics, because we got. We got
- 5:11Speaker 2: because you went to two different high schools. So you
- 5:13Speaker 2: went to Capitol first, did you go to South Charleston?
- 5:16Speaker 2: You want two championships at Capitol? Am I correct?
- 5:20Speaker 4: Correct?
- 5:20Speaker 2: You want two at South Charleston? Am I correct?
- 5:23Speaker 4: Correct?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah? Schools four straight championships in high school, which is
- 5:32Speaker 2: probably unheard of, except you know, maybe way back in
- 5:34Speaker 2: the day or something. McDonald's All American High School, All American.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You go to the program at the time, which was
- 5:41Speaker 2: Pat Summer's Tennessee Volunteers. So I would say, yeah that, lady,
- 5:47Speaker 2: excuse me, I would definitely say I think you could
- 5:51Speaker 2: hold that title, and I would argue anybody down with that.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely appreciate that. I appreciate it.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Hey, Alexis, this is Lisa, So so thank you for
- 5:59Speaker 5: coming on to the podcast tonight. So one of the
- 6:02Speaker 5: things I wanted to add to what Hollis was just saying,
- 6:05Speaker 5: was one of the experiences that you had, and you
- 6:07Speaker 5: are one of the you are the only one that
- 6:10Speaker 5: had had this experience, was in two thousand and eight
- 6:13Speaker 5: when the Lady Vols the University of Tennessee won the
- 6:15Speaker 5: national championship, and then the very next year you win
- 6:19Speaker 5: another championship with the WNBA with Detroit Shock.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Is that correct, yes, ma'am.
- 6:24Speaker 5: So how was that experience? I mean, I'm sure you
- 6:26Speaker 5: were just elated about all that.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, it was. And again it was something that
- 6:32Speaker 4: was real, like two thousand and eight happened. It was
- 6:34Speaker 4: a lot that happened in two thousand and eight, So
- 6:36Speaker 4: happened relatively fast, and your.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Head was spinning. Really, I said, your head was probably spinning.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Oh, it was definitely spinning, and it was just hard
- 6:48Speaker 4: to really take it in because at that point in time,
- 6:51Speaker 4: as far as just missally and where my mental health was, like,
- 6:54Speaker 4: I was just really programmed for like what's next, what's next? Okay,
- 6:58Speaker 4: we did that, what's next? You know, just just chasing
- 7:02Speaker 4: success and winning because I hate los. So it was
- 7:07Speaker 4: just like it took me well into a couple of
- 7:11Speaker 4: months of being in this simbul turkey my first year
- 7:14Speaker 4: overseas playing for Bettie to be like, oh my gosh, like,
- 7:18Speaker 4: let me let me run that back real quick, like
- 7:21Speaker 4: it was wild. It was wild.
- 7:23Speaker 2: When when was when was the first time that you actually,
- 7:30Speaker 2: let's say on the court, you really let's say, you've
- 7:34Speaker 2: done something, won the game, did whatever that made you
- 7:40Speaker 2: think like wow, like you know, like I am I
- 7:45Speaker 2: really am this person? Because I think there's a difference
- 7:47Speaker 2: in reflecting on being good, being great, being the best
- 7:53Speaker 2: and then in a moment that something actually happens to
- 7:58Speaker 2: make you say, yeah, I guess I really really am
- 8:02Speaker 2: You know you do you have that moment?
- 8:05Speaker 4: Oh, I can't really pinpoint it because it didn't really
- 8:10Speaker 4: happen for me, like in a game, right, it's at
- 8:14Speaker 4: the park.
- 8:16Speaker 2: It happened at the park.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Yeah, like freetball, because you know, once you can compete
- 8:21Speaker 4: and hold your own, especially as a girl, Like it
- 8:25Speaker 4: hits different like, oh, I'm scoring at will now, Okay,
- 8:28Speaker 4: I can lock down, Okay, I can read defense better,
- 8:31Speaker 4: I can you know, my angles are getting better, like
- 8:33Speaker 4: just understanding the game, moving at a faster pace, getting stronger,
- 8:37Speaker 4: being able to make touch shots. Like all of that
- 8:39Speaker 4: for me was really happening from playing outside with my
- 8:43Speaker 4: brother and like in the neighborhood and stuff.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah, And I want to talk on that because you know,
- 8:50Speaker 2: going from high and I talked about high school where,
- 8:52Speaker 2: like I said, you were a prolific basketball player here
- 8:54Speaker 2: in the state of West Virginia. I think you averaged
- 8:56Speaker 2: probably thirty points, probably darning or triple double maybe throughout
- 9:00Speaker 2: your whole years of high school. Then I can remember
- 9:02Speaker 2: watching you at Tennessee and I can see how your
- 9:05Speaker 2: game had changed, where you had become sort of an
- 9:07Speaker 2: all around not only contributing on the offensive end, getting rebounds,
- 9:12Speaker 2: getting to assists, you know, being a lockdown defender. Like
- 9:15Speaker 2: when you had to the transition in your game, how
- 9:19Speaker 2: would you sort of express that because I know you
- 9:21Speaker 2: do a little coaching too, So how would you tell kids, like,
- 9:24Speaker 2: you know, if you're going from one level to the next,
- 9:26Speaker 2: your game has to change, But that doesn't mean that
- 9:29Speaker 2: your production and you still won't get the shine that
- 9:31Speaker 2: you need.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Yeah. For me, yeah, I was. My father taught me
- 9:38Speaker 4: how to like evaluate the situation, know your role, and
- 9:44Speaker 4: then go dominate.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:46Speaker 4: So in high school I had to be that player, right,
- 9:49Speaker 4: I had to do it all. I had to sit
- 9:51Speaker 4: on both ends of the court. In college, yes, I
- 9:53Speaker 4: had to do it, but I also didn't have to
- 9:56Speaker 4: do it because I'm playing alongside all other mcdonald' all
- 10:00Speaker 4: Americans and high school all Americans, Gatorade all Americans. Yeah, so
- 10:05Speaker 4: I like to win, Like I said, So, if you're
- 10:07Speaker 4: a true winner, if you're a true competitor, you know
- 10:10Speaker 4: your skill set and you're confident in what you do,
- 10:13Speaker 4: and you stay coachable so that you can learn how
- 10:16Speaker 4: to adapt to any type of structure, any type of system,
- 10:19Speaker 4: any type of team, because things will change. Your game
- 10:23Speaker 4: will have to be evolved. It may have to it
- 10:25Speaker 4: may have to get sped up. You might have to
- 10:26Speaker 4: get stronger, you might have to study more film because
- 10:30Speaker 4: your basketball Q isn't at the level it needs to
- 10:32Speaker 4: be compared to your counterparts. There's just things that if
- 10:35Speaker 4: you think you got to figure it out and you
- 10:37Speaker 4: already and you ain't one not a championship or a
- 10:40Speaker 4: gold medal, or you ain't already drafted or in the
- 10:43Speaker 4: Hall of Fame, then you were you're doing it wrong.
- 10:46Speaker 2: That's excellent. I think that's any athlete.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely, so absolutely, Oh for sure, Alexis So, I
- 10:54Speaker 5: know two thousand and eight when you were drafted into
- 10:56Speaker 5: the w NBA, it was it was early in that
- 11:00Speaker 5: actual league. And so now we're in the year twenty
- 11:03Speaker 5: twenty five, what are your thoughts on the growth and
- 11:05Speaker 5: future of the of the nw w NBA.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Now, oh, I love the direction. Yeah, the women's game
- 11:13Speaker 4: as a whole in the past few years. You know,
- 11:17Speaker 4: the little petty part of me is like dang, but
- 11:24Speaker 4: I'm like ye. But on top of that, just the game,
- 11:27Speaker 4: the viewership, the participation, the support. Now you have other
- 11:33Speaker 4: other pro leagues, semi pro league happening, but the w
- 11:36Speaker 4: NBA is finally stepping up and doing the little things
- 11:39Speaker 4: like we shouldn't. I mean, we're charter flights versus commercial flights,
- 11:43Speaker 4: but you know those are I was shocked. Guys. Let
- 11:46Speaker 4: me tell y'all something I'll finished. I will finish answer
- 11:48Speaker 4: this question. Abad So sometimes I got to get this
- 11:52Speaker 4: out before I forget So. So in two thousand and eight,
- 11:56Speaker 4: of course, you know, I'm four years spoiled at Tennessee,
- 11:59Speaker 4: I'm in Detroit. We get in that itinerary to fly
- 12:02Speaker 4: out the next day, and they talked about we got
- 12:05Speaker 4: to be at the gymal four hours early because it's
- 12:06Speaker 4: the hours to the airport and we need to check
- 12:08Speaker 4: in two hours early first off check in?
- 12:10Speaker 2: What is that?
- 12:15Speaker 4: We don't up to the plan. So I'm very happy
- 12:22Speaker 4: for all the women in the w NBA and all
- 12:24Speaker 4: the future young ladies that will be a part of it.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Did they get to feel like a pro you know
- 12:29Speaker 4: how it should have been and that separation. And I
- 12:32Speaker 4: hope it continues to grow. I hope, you know, the pay,
- 12:34Speaker 4: the salary continues to grow up, the opportunity to continue
- 12:37Speaker 4: to grow because it's great for women's basketball.
- 12:40Speaker 2: That was one of the things I was going to
- 12:41Speaker 2: bring up was the actual dollars, dollars and cents when
- 12:46Speaker 2: it comes to men's sports and women's sports. To me,
- 12:51Speaker 2: when I look at the w NBA and which I look,
- 12:55Speaker 2: which I would prefer to watch over the NBA. To
- 12:58Speaker 2: be honest, it looks they play harder. It's it's it's
- 13:03Speaker 2: it's just it's just a it's more teamwork. It seems
- 13:06Speaker 2: like just the whole thing. And I'm not even a
- 13:08Speaker 2: basketball player, but I would prefer to watch the w
- 13:14Speaker 2: n B a because of the work that they put in.
- 13:17Speaker 2: The question like, at what point in time do you
- 13:20Speaker 2: think that there's going to be a reasoning somebody's gonna
- 13:25Speaker 2: come in and say, Okay, look we got to up
- 13:27Speaker 2: this money, like right now.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Like.
- 13:32Speaker 2: What I mean, what is what do you think is
- 13:34Speaker 2: holding it back? Why? Is because I think everybody publicly
- 13:39Speaker 2: thinks it should be as close as way closer to
- 13:43Speaker 2: the NBA or as an equal to Like are we
- 13:47Speaker 2: wrong on that?
- 13:49Speaker 4: No? Absolutely not wrong on that, especially if you're looking
- 13:52Speaker 4: at the money that's being thrown around.
- 13:53Speaker 2: For n I L yeah, I did. That's a great point,
- 13:57Speaker 2: because I didn't. I didn't even look at that as
- 13:59Speaker 2: a point.
- 14:01Speaker 4: You can't you can't say the money is not out there, right,
- 14:06Speaker 4: I'm not. I'm unsure how to fully answer that question.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Because it just comes down to doing. The people that
- 14:12Speaker 4: have the money, the people that have the power and
- 14:14Speaker 4: the positions do it. So until they they stop the
- 14:18Speaker 4: conversation and make it about action, it's it's going to
- 14:22Speaker 4: just continue to climb an increments rather than just take off.
- 14:26Speaker 4: But the good part about it is the conversation is
- 14:29Speaker 4: so loud now you can't turn it down. Right. We're
- 14:31Speaker 4: in the error of social media, instant instant information, so
- 14:35Speaker 4: it's harder for people to sell dreams in a sense
- 14:39Speaker 4: of oh, yeah, this would be a great idea, and
- 14:41Speaker 4: we know that people the w NBA needs more money. Okay,
- 14:44Speaker 4: so why are we not investing in this? Why are
- 14:46Speaker 4: we're not supporting it? Why are we're not helping the
- 14:48Speaker 4: raise the bar, the salary, the salary, cast and all
- 14:51Speaker 4: that good stuff. So until just words become action, I
- 14:56Speaker 4: don't have a better answer for you, to be honest,
- 15:00Speaker 4: hollis you.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Of course, Yeah, just like I said, you know, you
- 15:05Speaker 2: mentioned that you play soccer a lot of times when
- 15:06Speaker 2: we talk about on the show, we talk about, you know,
- 15:10Speaker 2: particularly what Coachly does in his day job as far
- 15:12Speaker 2: as developing youth athletes. What I always noticed about you
- 15:17Speaker 2: and I remember you playing soccer, and I also remember
- 15:20Speaker 2: you know you're just accolades on the basketball court. How
- 15:22Speaker 2: important was it in your early development just to be
- 15:25Speaker 2: an athlete. Didn't kind of focusing that in to being
- 15:28Speaker 2: a great basketball player?
- 15:32Speaker 4: Man, it was. It's important because how you do anything
- 15:35Speaker 4: is how you do everything. So it doesn't it doesn't
- 15:38Speaker 4: matter what I'm playing or what I'm doing is I
- 15:41Speaker 4: think it's a competition, which almost everything is. To me,
- 15:45Speaker 4: I want to learn it, teach me. I want to
- 15:47Speaker 4: learn it. Now, I want to try it, and now
- 15:49Speaker 4: I want to master it or dominate it. So especially
- 15:52Speaker 4: in the sport world. And I'm the younger sister. My
- 15:55Speaker 4: brother and I were fifteen months apart, so I'm trying
- 15:57Speaker 4: to keep up with him, do what he does, you
- 15:59Speaker 4: know what I mean? And then growing up in the
- 16:03Speaker 4: bottom and dunbar and the most it's just like you
- 16:06Speaker 4: can't be soft. You can't. If I if I want
- 16:09Speaker 4: to play with the boys, I gotta want to compete
- 16:11Speaker 4: and beat the boys. So yeah, it just came down to,
- 16:16Speaker 4: like I want to beat the boys. I don't want
- 16:18Speaker 4: to be the best girl, Like I want to be
- 16:19Speaker 4: the best out here, right, So that was soccer. That
- 16:22Speaker 4: was basketball, and soccer obviously is an advantage when it
- 16:27Speaker 4: comes to conditioning, agility, right footwork, even court vision because
- 16:32Speaker 4: in angles, if I can make certain passes on a
- 16:34Speaker 4: soccer field, what am I going to do in ninety
- 16:36Speaker 4: four feet? That's easy money, that's nice?
- 16:40Speaker 2: So so what what?
- 16:41Speaker 4: So? What?
- 16:41Speaker 2: What is? What is Lexus hornbook up to nowadays? What's
- 16:44Speaker 2: going on? Now?
- 16:45Speaker 4: Oh man? Nowadays? I have a mental performance coaching for
- 16:49Speaker 4: pro athletes. I've been doing that for about four years now.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Now what is what is that? Explain that?
- 16:56Speaker 4: Uh So? Mental performance coaching is exactly what it sounds.
- 16:59Speaker 4: So you know you have your strength and conditioning coaches,
- 17:01Speaker 4: your physical therapists, your athletic trainers, right, the people that
- 17:04Speaker 4: put you through your physical training. So on the mental part,
- 17:09Speaker 4: it's the mental training aspect of it. We know that
- 17:12Speaker 4: all sports or success in and of itself is about
- 17:16Speaker 4: at least eighty percent mental right physical or performance. So
- 17:21Speaker 4: if I can train my mind, if I can get
- 17:23Speaker 4: those muscles right, if I can figure out my triggers,
- 17:26Speaker 4: like why do I have negative self talk? Or if
- 17:28Speaker 4: I'm dealing with imposters imposter syndrome or intrusive thoughts or
- 17:34Speaker 4: lack of focus. You know, it's giving people tools. Sometimes
- 17:40Speaker 4: it's as simple as you know, pause and prey, meditate,
- 17:44Speaker 4: being intentional about mindfulness, whether that's reading books, taking walk,
- 17:48Speaker 4: whatever it is that you like to do outside of
- 17:50Speaker 4: your sport, but also daily routines, vision boards, setting goals.
- 17:56Speaker 4: And then what type of athlete are you?
- 17:58Speaker 2: Like?
- 17:58Speaker 4: Do you are you more of an outcome goal person
- 18:01Speaker 4: and you succeed and thrive well in that? Are you
- 18:03Speaker 4: more of a process goal person? So do you care
- 18:05Speaker 4: about the finish line like I just need to be
- 18:08Speaker 4: number one? Right? Or for you to really perform to
- 18:11Speaker 4: get to number one? Do you need to focus on
- 18:13Speaker 4: the process goals? So in order for me to be
- 18:15Speaker 4: number one? What do I have to do right? And
- 18:18Speaker 4: every athlete is different. There's there's foundations and fundamental tools
- 18:22Speaker 4: and things that we share with our athletes, but it's
- 18:26Speaker 4: more about breaking that down and finding that right road
- 18:29Speaker 4: so that that mental performance elevates their sport performance.
- 18:33Speaker 2: That's awesome, that's great. And you know what's interesting to
- 18:35Speaker 2: me as you were as you were going through that list,
- 18:39Speaker 2: I was sitting here thinking like, gosh, I can remember
- 18:43Speaker 2: writing on a piece of paper, first team All Conference,
- 18:47Speaker 2: first team All State North South football game for my
- 18:51Speaker 2: senior year, and you and and and you do work
- 18:55Speaker 2: toward that. But I don't know if kids buy into
- 18:59Speaker 2: that now, Like I don't know if they understand like
- 19:02Speaker 2: writing something down, saying it every day, looking at it
- 19:06Speaker 2: every day, that makes you work like cause like you're
- 19:10Speaker 2: going to put some work in. If those are the
- 19:12Speaker 2: things that cause you can't just put that on your wall,
- 19:15Speaker 2: walk and walk away and do nothing, to just sit
- 19:17Speaker 2: at the kitchen table like chilling. You got to put
- 19:21Speaker 2: work in. And I and I don't know if if
- 19:24Speaker 2: today's kids, young athletes understand the importance of saying who
- 19:33Speaker 2: and what you want to be?
- 19:36Speaker 3: Right?
- 19:36Speaker 2: Would you? Would you? I was gonna say, do you
- 19:38Speaker 2: agree with that? Because and and and where do you
- 19:41Speaker 2: get How do we get that to them? Now? Like
- 19:45Speaker 2: my mom my dad didn't necessarily have to get that,
- 19:47Speaker 2: They didn't have to drive that in me. It was
- 19:50Speaker 2: something that I think came with me and then they
- 19:54Speaker 2: magnified it in every area. Make sure you get your school,
- 19:58Speaker 2: make sure you get up and get your your get
- 20:00Speaker 2: out there and run and do those kinds of things.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Is that is that something that's lost now or are
- 20:06Speaker 2: we just over are we missing it, overlooking it or.
- 20:09Speaker 4: What It's definitely lost in a sense of the majority
- 20:15Speaker 4: of the kids being able to have it in them
- 20:17Speaker 4: or do it on their own. They're having to be taught.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Even the parents are having to be taught. Really, and
- 20:23Speaker 4: I think that's necessary. One of the reasons we partner
- 20:27Speaker 4: with the YMCA here in East Tennessee and we actually
- 20:31Speaker 4: started implementing programs into local high school so where my
- 20:37Speaker 4: business partner and I we go in with one of
- 20:39Speaker 4: the y m c A reps and we talk them,
- 20:43Speaker 4: talk to them with the coaches in there, and we
- 20:46Speaker 4: get them a game plan for the mental aspect, the affirmations,
- 20:49Speaker 4: the list of gratitude, the routine, and we teach them
- 20:54Speaker 4: how to use it, why to use it journaling, And
- 20:59Speaker 4: it goes on for about four weeks or so, and
- 21:02Speaker 4: it's just it's just it's imperative for them to understand.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Everybody's good as you continue to get to higher levels, right, yeah,
- 21:11Speaker 4: so what's going to separate you apart? And everybody wants me, well,
- 21:14Speaker 4: I'll be faster than everybody. I can outjump everybody out
- 21:17Speaker 4: to know, because somebody's gonna be able to still run
- 21:20Speaker 4: and jump as fast and its high as you. So
- 21:23Speaker 4: what's going to set you apart? It's going to be
- 21:24Speaker 4: your mindset, your mental resilience, your mental toughness. How do
- 21:28Speaker 4: I bounce back? How do I pivot? How quickly can
- 21:31Speaker 4: I adapt? And when I am really pissed off or
- 21:35Speaker 4: I'm playing terrible, like, what do I do in these times?
- 21:39Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. And the earlier you can
- 21:41Speaker 4: learn these skills and tools and start to implement them,
- 21:44Speaker 4: like intentionally practice them. Then as you continue to elevate
- 21:50Speaker 4: at collegiate and pro level, you know, it's like it's
- 21:53Speaker 4: like walking, you know, second nature any who you are.
- 21:58Speaker 4: So I think, yeah, it's it's much needed. It's missing
- 22:01Speaker 4: and it's much needed. So yeah, y'all holler at me,
- 22:03Speaker 4: go to elections, Hormbuckle dot com, reach out any of
- 22:06Speaker 4: my will figure it out. Because the company I work with,
- 22:09Speaker 4: we do schools, organizations, teams. Uh, we've expanded just from
- 22:13Speaker 4: pro league teams to all of what I just mentioned.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Yeah, give them the give them the website one more time.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Alectionis Hornbuckle dot com.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah, man, don't reach out, man, Hey, right, and if
- 22:24Speaker 2: you want, if you want, if you go to let's
- 22:27Speaker 2: talk with Carley on On on my Facebook page, send
- 22:32Speaker 2: me some of that information and hey, I'll shoot it
- 22:35Speaker 2: out there.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Absolutely I appreciate that.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because I mean because because, for a fact,
- 22:41Speaker 2: that is the most critical piece crib of anybody's hope
- 22:45Speaker 2: for success, not even to get to success, but I
- 22:48Speaker 2: hope to even have. And I would say, in addition
- 22:50Speaker 2: to athletics, just even in your professional career, because you
- 22:53Speaker 2: can have all of the things you talked about, the
- 22:56Speaker 2: negative self talk, to imposter syndrome, you can have that,
- 22:58Speaker 2: you know, as you elevating climb quote unquote corporate latter.
- 23:01Speaker 2: So everything you said is vital and and and definitely important.
- 23:05Speaker 2: And I'll say this before we close out. We got
- 23:07Speaker 2: the Carl Lee Award for the best defensive back in
- 23:11Speaker 2: high school West Virginia. We need to do. We got
- 23:13Speaker 2: a Lexus hornbook.
- 23:16Speaker 4: And.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I think we gotta start. I gotta talk. I gotta
- 23:22Speaker 2: talk to boss Man. You know what I'm saying. That's
- 23:25Speaker 2: her cousin is Sewn Hornbuckle, delicate. I call him boss Man.
- 23:31Speaker 2: So I gotta talk to boss Man. We gotta pick
- 23:32Speaker 2: that together. We gotta do that.
- 23:34Speaker 4: But see this, this is my problem.
- 23:37Speaker 2: This is my problem with what we don't do for
- 23:40Speaker 2: athletes that come out of here like that. That's that's
- 23:43Speaker 2: an easy see. I got this man on his so
- 23:48Speaker 2: I'm here now. That's that's my that is that is
- 23:51Speaker 2: my complete fight. Is just because for every kid, they're
- 23:56Speaker 2: gonna look at somebody that may be you, that be me,
- 24:00Speaker 2: that may be Hollans, that may be Lisa, that may
- 24:02Speaker 2: be anybody we got. You gotta celebrate that achievement and
- 24:08Speaker 2: and you got to put it out there to people
- 24:10Speaker 2: to see because we gotta we gotta do that. I mean,
- 24:14Speaker 2: we got to do that, and we just haven't done it.
- 24:16Speaker 2: We get mad at people, you know, we get mad
- 24:18Speaker 2: at Kurt Warner because he don't come back. But he
- 24:21Speaker 2: still was the number one draft pick in the league.
- 24:24Speaker 2: You still got he he was the best back in
- 24:27Speaker 2: the nation out of high school from Ponville, West Virginia.
- 24:30Speaker 2: You gotta put that out there. So that's that's just
- 24:38Speaker 2: I haven't I'm touchy about that kind of stuff because
- 24:41Speaker 2: I just know I don't think we do a good
- 24:43Speaker 2: job of allowing our young athletes to understand who came
- 24:49Speaker 2: before them and who you can be? See see if
- 24:52Speaker 2: Prime was, But you know Prime already got his son,
- 24:54Speaker 2: Jersey retire. We're dragging our feet, we're dragging off. Hey, Well,
- 25:03Speaker 2: we truly, truly, truly appreciate you being on and I'm
- 25:06Speaker 2: sure that there's a chance we may try to call
- 25:08Speaker 2: you back sometime soon.
- 25:09Speaker 6: Thank you, all right, thank you.
- 25:11Speaker 4: I appreciate it. All right.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Now I'm gonna I'm gonna just I gotta throw this
- 25:24Speaker 2: out there. I just got to throw this out there. Okay,
- 25:28Speaker 2: is there any possible way that there should not be
- 25:32Speaker 2: something with her name on it? Oh?
- 25:36Speaker 6: Is there not?
- 25:37Speaker 2: I would think an award for what I don't think
- 25:40Speaker 2: it is, because I mean, if you look at her
- 25:42Speaker 2: and Montgomery, it's gotta be it should be something.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Right, I'm not sure the boys basketball do they have
- 25:51Speaker 5: like named after a players?
- 25:54Speaker 2: But I don't know if they have like a I
- 25:55Speaker 2: don't even know if they got like a Dre West Award,
- 25:58Speaker 2: which is insane because we got Jerry West, you got
- 26:03Speaker 2: hot Rod Huntley because you got to West Virginia. Charleston,
- 26:06Speaker 2: how Towns is the only the only school with two
- 26:09Speaker 2: number one draft picks. So I forget the gentleman in
- 26:11Speaker 2: the fit.
- 26:11Speaker 6: I'm looked it up, Jason Williams. That's another one awards.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yeah, so I mean, but when you say Lexis Hornbocal,
- 26:18Speaker 2: I'm talking about she's the great. She's she's arguably the
- 26:21Speaker 2: greatest high school basketball player to ever come out of
- 26:24Speaker 2: this state. And it's and to your point, she won
- 26:27Speaker 2: a championship in college the same she wanted w NBA
- 26:31Speaker 2: championship in one single year. And yeah, she plays at
- 26:36Speaker 2: the school for two years now, state championship, goes to
- 26:39Speaker 2: another school and a state champion for two more and
- 26:43Speaker 2: and go to college national and go to college and
- 26:46Speaker 2: w n B A.
- 26:47Speaker 6: W n She's got a little bit of hardware.
- 26:51Speaker 2: There's a common denominator in those championship. Yeah, of course,
- 26:55Speaker 2: So we definitely want to look into that see if
- 26:58Speaker 2: there's anything and if it's not, we got to start
- 27:01Speaker 2: petitioning that.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Well.
- 27:03Speaker 2: One of the things I think, I don't know if
- 27:05Speaker 2: it'll happen, if we could find a way to get
- 27:08Speaker 2: people to come on the show who are part of
- 27:12Speaker 2: the recognition piece of it. Not I'm not gonna say
- 27:15Speaker 2: people who actually do it because they're not gonna come
- 27:17Speaker 2: because they're not going to try to justify why they don't.
- 27:20Speaker 2: But I mean, how, you know, how do we find
- 27:23Speaker 2: a method of Well, you you got the Inside School,
- 27:28Speaker 2: you got award.
- 27:30Speaker 6: You're the guy with the show award.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Okay, but here's to the car Le Award. I so
- 27:39Speaker 2: appreciate it. I so appreciate it. I ain't not nothing
- 27:42Speaker 2: about it. And that's crazy. I didn't know anything about it.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Like nobody called me, nobody said hey, we're going to
- 27:48Speaker 2: do this. I did not know anything about it.
- 27:51Speaker 6: That I didn't realize that.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's what I mean, Like if you're going to, like,
- 27:56Speaker 2: for example, if you give out those works, because I
- 27:58Speaker 2: know they do, like the Athletic State, then after Jennerby
- 28:01Speaker 2: in the Winner after the football season, it's like, why
- 28:04Speaker 2: wouldn't you invite you to exactly to actually present for award?
- 28:08Speaker 2: Like I don't want to understand like how we do things.
- 28:11Speaker 2: And if and let me just say this, if by
- 28:13Speaker 2: some chance I missed a call or whatever and somebody
- 28:17Speaker 2: attempted to try to get to me, I may have
- 28:20Speaker 2: missed you, okay, but like I didn't know, like I
- 28:25Speaker 2: literally did not know that I was even that that
- 28:28Speaker 2: was even gonna be a thing that's wild, you know,
- 28:32Speaker 2: all right, So let's take a break and we will
- 28:33Speaker 2: be right back.
- 28:34Speaker 7: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously

- 29:34Speaker 3: their conversation.
- 29:36Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back guys, guy and lady.
- 29:45Speaker 2: That was That was. That was one of the interviews
- 29:50Speaker 2: that I will not forget for the simple fact of
- 29:55Speaker 2: so many positive things that she said about work ethic,
- 29:58Speaker 2: her own work ethic and all those kinds of things,
- 30:00Speaker 2: the things that she had to do, and where they
- 30:03Speaker 2: put her, and when you put wherever she went, championships
- 30:07Speaker 2: went with her. You know, she didn't go yeah, yeah,
- 30:10Speaker 2: she didn't. She didn't. She didn't go anywhere where there
- 30:14Speaker 2: was a championship. She went and made a championship. And
- 30:16Speaker 2: I think when you when you start looking at that
- 30:18Speaker 2: type of talent, you look at that type I can't
- 30:20Speaker 2: even imagine the mindset that she would have on the floor.
- 30:24Speaker 2: She ain't losing, you know what I'm saying.
- 30:26Speaker 6: She said that she's very competitive. You can hear it,
- 30:28Speaker 6: and you can you can hear it.
- 30:30Speaker 2: You can hear it in her voice. All right, So.
- 30:36Speaker 6: Speaking of competitive, speaking.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Of competitive, So this is a this is a topic
- 30:44Speaker 2: that I'm not necessarily I'm not sure how this is
- 30:48Speaker 2: going to go between me and Hollis Aaron Rodgers.
- 30:56Speaker 6: Mm hmm. Okay, he said, should we play the clip?
- 31:03Speaker 2: Well, yeah, let's let's let Yeah, you got the clip
- 31:05Speaker 2: for us, all right, Yeah, let's play this.
- 31:06Speaker 8: Every single one of the teams I talk to, you know,
- 31:09Speaker 8: laining about the money. I'll play for ten ms. You know,
- 31:13Speaker 8: I don't care. I never once said I need a
- 31:15Speaker 8: multi year deal. Thirty forty million dollars is absolute bull.
- 31:19Speaker 8: I said, I play for ten Yeah whatever.
- 31:25Speaker 5: I'm just going to start this conversation right now before
- 31:28Speaker 5: we talk about the amount of money, the dollars and
- 31:32Speaker 5: cents of it. I mean, this is not a good
- 31:34Speaker 5: look for Aaron Rodgers. This whole sympathetic figure.
- 31:39Speaker 6: Woe is me.
- 31:40Speaker 5: I'll play for you know, ten million, and and just
- 31:44Speaker 5: the whole victim outlook that he's trying to that vibe
- 31:47Speaker 5: that is that is not him, And to me, he's
- 31:49Speaker 5: losing credibility.
- 31:51Speaker 6: I don't know about you guys, but.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I don't I think in his mind. I think this
- 31:57Speaker 2: is a pity party. Now. Yeah, we're four like, yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 2: I'm gonna play. Yeah, I can play. I can still
- 32:04Speaker 2: play the question ten ten you know, you throw ten
- 32:10Speaker 2: mil out and and in today's game, that ain't that's
- 32:14Speaker 2: not a quarterback, not quarterback, but what if he Let's
- 32:19Speaker 2: assume the reason why he hasn't gotten a contract, okay,
- 32:25Speaker 2: is because nobody thinks that he's really prepared. He's not.
- 32:28Speaker 2: I don't won't stay prepared. He he just doesn't have
- 32:31Speaker 2: it anymore. So if I give you ten the one
- 32:35Speaker 2: thing I'm guaranted, I guarantee you this, it's gonna be
- 32:38Speaker 2: guaranteed ten. Yeah, you know, so now you want you
- 32:42Speaker 2: want to guarantee me ten? I want you to guarantee
- 32:45Speaker 2: me ten million dollars and and I'm not sure. I
- 32:51Speaker 2: don't even know if I can play. And just to
- 32:53Speaker 2: put a clip just a little context, basically what happened
- 32:56Speaker 2: was he was in California, flew across the country, he
- 32:59Speaker 2: met with the and the new Jets coach, Aaron Glenn
- 33:02Speaker 2: basically just told him, hey, we're going in a different direction.
- 33:05Speaker 2: He was a little perturbed because he said, you could
- 33:07Speaker 2: have told me that over the phone. But I guess
- 33:09Speaker 2: the question I would have, like, if you're the stealers,
- 33:11Speaker 2: and I think that's who's the stealers are the Vikings,
- 33:14Speaker 2: that's who's talking about possibly him joining the squad, Like
- 33:18Speaker 2: why I just don't understand you. Again, I've talked about
- 33:22Speaker 2: it before. This is a different game as far as
- 33:27Speaker 2: the type of quarterbacks that we see winning and getting
- 33:30Speaker 2: deep playoff runs. We're looking at more athletic apematics, movement, movement,
- 33:33Speaker 2: who could move and actually run the ball. And then
- 33:36Speaker 2: you're and again, you're not a Tom Brady where you're
- 33:39Speaker 2: not like this revered team guy, this fearless leader who's
- 33:44Speaker 2: doing everything possible. He's eating all the little bird stuff
- 33:49Speaker 2: and doing all the new innovative exercise. You're not that guy.
- 33:52Speaker 2: You're not Tom Brady. So if I'm an organization, why
- 33:56Speaker 2: even at ten million, which is a bargain quote unquote
- 33:59Speaker 2: forour quote the back of maybe his caliber, Why go
- 34:02Speaker 2: that way? Why not just either get somebody I can develop,
- 34:06Speaker 2: or just get somebody in the draft or draft somebody who's,
- 34:09Speaker 2: you know, in their twenties. I just don't understand why
- 34:12Speaker 2: you would even bring him in at this point. He clearly,
- 34:14Speaker 2: to your point, he's kind of wishy washy about whether
- 34:17Speaker 2: he wants to play or not. And he's clearly not
- 34:20Speaker 2: the same player he was when he was with Green Bay.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Does anybody think does anybody think he can sit on
- 34:25Speaker 2: the sideline no and just be there. No. And that's
- 34:29Speaker 2: what you're not bringing him in for that Now, he's
- 34:31Speaker 2: not the mentor type, right. If he's not the he
- 34:34Speaker 2: could be he could be helpful, No, but I don't
- 34:37Speaker 2: believe it. But mentally he can't be. But I'm just saying.
- 34:40Speaker 6: Ego gets in the way.
- 34:41Speaker 5: That too much to ask of him. And the latest
- 34:45Speaker 5: thing that I saw just a few hours ago, which
- 34:48Speaker 5: came out on social media, I think it might have
- 34:50Speaker 5: been Twitter that the reason he has not committed to
- 34:53Speaker 5: a team yet is because he's waiting on the draft
- 34:56Speaker 5: to see, you know, to make a decision on where
- 34:58Speaker 5: he goes. Because he wants to make sure whatever team
- 35:01Speaker 5: he attaches his name to, he is the starter. He
- 35:04Speaker 5: does not want to be behind another name. So that's
- 35:07Speaker 5: the reason that he's holding out on a commitment.
- 35:09Speaker 6: He's not close.
- 35:09Speaker 5: He won't come out and say, you know, I'm going
- 35:11Speaker 5: to go play here or there, or you know, I'm
- 35:13Speaker 5: committed to fill in the blank whatever team it is.
- 35:16Speaker 5: You know, it's still he thinks it's mister Rogers neighborhood
- 35:18Speaker 5: and we're all here to serve him. And I loved
- 35:21Speaker 5: him when he was in Green Bay. You know, I'm
- 35:22Speaker 5: I'm a big Packer fan. We all know that giggles
- 35:25Speaker 5: from Carl over there, mister Vikings, But I'm a Packer fan,
- 35:29Speaker 5: and I you know, at that time when they went
- 35:32Speaker 5: to that Super Bowl one, that was the style of
- 35:35Speaker 5: play that a quarterback could be successful. But like you said,
- 35:37Speaker 5: the game has left him, it's changed, and he's gotten older.
- 35:41Speaker 5: But in his mind he can't wrap or grasp the
- 35:44Speaker 5: fact that all of those things are playing a factor
- 35:47Speaker 5: into whether or not he can continue his career. He
- 35:49Speaker 5: just can't accept the time to go.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think most great athletes probably have a
- 35:54Speaker 2: hard time with boxes and all that. I'm just saying.
- 35:57Speaker 2: My comment is just like for a coaches that have
- 36:00Speaker 2: or the organization, why in the world would you bring
- 36:04Speaker 2: him in? There's to me, it's almost zero upside. It's
- 36:07Speaker 2: no upside to bring him in. In my mind, I'm
- 36:10Speaker 2: not a great leader, and I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm
- 36:14Speaker 2: gonna agree. I'm gonna agree with you on that, Holisy,
- 36:18Speaker 2: simply because to your point, when you look at him
- 36:23Speaker 2: and you and you and you listen to him, what
- 36:27Speaker 2: you hear, he's not saying he's coming in as a backup,
- 36:33Speaker 2: and I think the Vikings had said something about like
- 36:35Speaker 2: maybe having him in and then having him you know,
- 36:39Speaker 2: so that you've got experience coming off the bench in
- 36:43Speaker 2: case somebody gets hurt or whatever. That ain't what he
- 36:47Speaker 2: wants and and and and to me, it's clear he's
- 36:51Speaker 2: looking for a starting job and that and and he
- 36:56Speaker 2: he he's not mobile enough. There's just no way he's
- 37:00Speaker 2: going to be mobile enough. I just don't think he.
- 37:05Speaker 2: I think there's a place in time where you have
- 37:07Speaker 2: to say that your game is done. I did it.
- 37:11Speaker 2: A whole host of people did it, and there's a
- 37:14Speaker 2: whole host of people on the other side who just
- 37:16Speaker 2: can't let the game go.
- 37:18Speaker 5: And do you really think he would risk going out
- 37:20Speaker 5: there playing for just ten million? I know, I know
- 37:22Speaker 5: that's not a lot.
- 37:23Speaker 2: You know, that's I think he definitely would, Like you
- 37:26Speaker 2: just said this, ego, I mean, I think his his
- 37:28Speaker 2: to prove everybody. He wants to win another Super Bowl.
- 37:31Speaker 2: He wants to at least get there. And I think
- 37:33Speaker 2: it it's just I have to get there. But I
- 37:36Speaker 2: think even to that point, even everything can leave you physically.
- 37:40Speaker 2: But if you're a quarterback and you're just not like
- 37:43Speaker 2: an absolute great leader that that other men want to follow.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Even if you lack some physical abilities, even if they
- 37:50Speaker 2: could pitt some running backs around you, you could they
- 37:53Speaker 2: could probably make up. He still has a good ball,
- 37:55Speaker 2: he could still slang it, so he's probably they could
- 37:59Speaker 2: probably you know, fill some holes and for everything that
- 38:02Speaker 2: he lacks. But I just think on top of what
- 38:05Speaker 2: you like physically and did you proven over these years,
- 38:08Speaker 2: But you're just not a great leader, not somebody that
- 38:11Speaker 2: other men want to follow. I just to me, is
- 38:13Speaker 2: over not I would just I would go young if
- 38:16Speaker 2: I was an organization.
- 38:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't.
- 38:20Speaker 2: He's not a backup. He's not going to be a backup.
- 38:23Speaker 2: He's not going to go anywhere. I don't think. No,
- 38:25Speaker 2: he's going to That's.
- 38:26Speaker 6: Why he's waiting for the draft. I mean he will not.
- 38:28Speaker 6: He won't even.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Attach to the Steelers who pursued him probably the probably
- 38:33Speaker 5: the most or the hardest, as you know, compared to
- 38:36Speaker 5: other NFL teams, And he won't even he won't even
- 38:39Speaker 5: like he he did fly to Pittsburgh and talk to management.
- 38:42Speaker 5: From what I understand it was, it was kind of
- 38:44Speaker 5: a funny story. It was part of the interview with
- 38:46Speaker 5: Pat McAfee because I happened to be in the kitchen
- 38:48Speaker 5: and I heard his voice and I was like, oh boy,
- 38:50Speaker 5: what's he doing? So I kind of listened to the interview.
- 38:52Speaker 5: But he flew into Pittsburgh. He flew into an outside airport,
- 38:56Speaker 5: rented it and Paula and drove over to meet with
- 39:00Speaker 5: the Steelers management. But he wouldn't make a commitment. So
- 39:03Speaker 5: to me, they must have said something along the lines of,
- 39:07Speaker 5: you know, we're gonna wait and see what we do
- 39:08Speaker 5: in the draft, what's available, and that's why he wouldn't commit,
- 39:11Speaker 5: because he will not sit on the sidelines.
- 39:13Speaker 6: He's already made that clear.
- 39:14Speaker 2: But see that that lack of commitment to them, then
- 39:19Speaker 2: might be that's it? Well, sure, I mean it should
- 39:22Speaker 2: be in I would think I would think when I
- 39:26Speaker 2: look at him, I would let me rephrase that, when
- 39:29Speaker 2: I think about all he's been through the years that
- 39:32Speaker 2: he's played, and I'm trying to figure out what can
- 39:36Speaker 2: he bring to me now, he could help me by
- 39:41Speaker 2: being around young quarterbacks, yes, explaining to them all of
- 39:45Speaker 2: these kind of things, but there is none of that
- 39:48Speaker 2: in him.
- 39:49Speaker 6: No, I think he doesn't play second one.
- 39:51Speaker 2: No, I think his whole existence is playing his whole
- 39:56Speaker 2: existence is I am great? It is, it is, and
- 40:02Speaker 2: it is difficult. It is challenging to consider yourself playing
- 40:07Speaker 2: at an elite level and then all of a sudden
- 40:09Speaker 2: finding yourself like realizing physically, physically, mentally, emotionally, all of
- 40:17Speaker 2: those things that you just don't have it, like you
- 40:21Speaker 2: just can't find it, like you just I wish I
- 40:25Speaker 2: had it, I wish I still had it, but I don't.
- 40:29Speaker 2: And there are those people which I think he is
- 40:32Speaker 2: that guy who is overlooking all of those messages that
- 40:36Speaker 2: that are pointing out to him, that are that are
- 40:39Speaker 2: saying to you.
- 40:40Speaker 6: It's really sad, it really is.
- 40:43Speaker 2: I think it's even I think it's worse that he
- 40:47Speaker 2: even said because in that clip, it's it's it's a
- 40:51Speaker 2: lengthy kind of a clip, that statement that he's making
- 40:56Speaker 2: to me. I think that that just makes you look
- 41:02Speaker 2: bad man.
- 41:02Speaker 6: It's just a problem, yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Because you don't really like you're not looking at it,
- 41:06Speaker 2: like you're not you don't really know, like you don't
- 41:08Speaker 2: really know where you are at this point.
- 41:13Speaker 5: It's like he's going to these teams saying, not what
- 41:15Speaker 5: can what can I do for you?
- 41:17Speaker 6: It's more like what can you do for me?
- 41:19Speaker 5: You know, And that's not the right team oriented attitude
- 41:23Speaker 5: that works well in an NFL setting?
- 41:25Speaker 2: Is there is there is there the things that make
- 41:27Speaker 2: you great also communit things make you bad, Right, that's true.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Any one of you think that, is there any quarterback
- 41:37Speaker 2: in the league that's that that's a starter that he
- 41:41Speaker 2: could play before But I think it's a lot if
- 41:44Speaker 2: you're just talking about just pure maybe if it's you know,
- 41:48Speaker 2: just a seventeen game run, but I just think it's
- 41:51Speaker 2: bigger than that. I just don't think you to me,
- 41:56Speaker 2: he could probably come in there and do some things,
- 41:58Speaker 2: but I think it would just cost you too much
- 41:59Speaker 2: any in so I think he could probably go over
- 42:03Speaker 2: there maybe because I mean, if you look at his
- 42:05Speaker 2: last year status, he threw for three thousand yards I
- 42:07Speaker 2: think twenty thirty touchdowns. It was a decent season for
- 42:11Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers. But I just don't think long term is
- 42:13Speaker 2: just to me, it's.
- 42:15Speaker 6: Just the it's the investment, the investment, the.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Cost analysis of what he the damage that he could
- 42:20Speaker 2: do to a locker room for me is just too much.
- 42:23Speaker 2: But I mean talking about the draft, we talked about
- 42:29Speaker 2: Travis Hunter. Now, there's been talks that Travis Hunter is
- 42:34Speaker 2: going to be. Some people say he's gonna be primarily
- 42:37Speaker 2: a dB and then to play a little bit of receiver.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Some people say he's gonna be primarily a wide receiver,
- 42:43Speaker 2: play a little dB. So what are your thoughts? What
- 42:47Speaker 2: do you think he should come in as and sort
- 42:50Speaker 2: of supplement as I'm gonna say, I would think he
- 42:54Speaker 2: would want to come in as a receiver. I'm gonna
- 42:59Speaker 2: I'm going to put him at receiver, utilize his speed, ulize,
- 43:05Speaker 2: utilize his quickness, his ability to catch the ball, because
- 43:11Speaker 2: I think if you if you bring him, if you
- 43:13Speaker 2: bring him in as a dB, the question now is, okay,
- 43:16Speaker 2: is that is that going to be a corner? Okay,
- 43:18Speaker 2: so now he'll be a corner? Yeah, okay. Well, you
- 43:20Speaker 2: know sometimes they switch it to say but he ain't
- 43:23Speaker 2: got nothing. I think the problem, I think the problem
- 43:28Speaker 2: that he has at at corner maybe would be one
- 43:35Speaker 2: is he still gotta you know, there's still the Dion
- 43:38Speaker 2: whole kind of thing, Like you know, everybody's still gonna
- 43:41Speaker 2: say he he Dion had he touched them, right, So
- 43:44Speaker 2: he's got to be that good. I don't think he's
- 43:47Speaker 2: gonna be that good.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Now.
- 43:48Speaker 2: I'm not gonna say he's not. I'm not gonna say
- 43:51Speaker 2: be outside of shadow now trophy. Okay, Okay, but again,
- 43:57Speaker 2: I don't know if he I don't know if he
- 43:58Speaker 2: gets that, if he's not under Dion. I just I'm
- 44:03Speaker 2: just I don't think a coach would probably allow him
- 44:06Speaker 2: to do what Dion allowed him to do. But I
- 44:08Speaker 2: think if any coach allowed him to do that, I
- 44:10Speaker 2: think he's that. Let me clarify too, I think he
- 44:13Speaker 2: deserved it. I think he deserved it. I really do,
- 44:17Speaker 2: for the fact he played, he could play and legitimately
- 44:21Speaker 2: played both ways.
- 44:24Speaker 5: So so, oh no, I was just going to say that.
- 44:28Speaker 5: You know, it's kind of been the center of debate
- 44:30Speaker 5: for this draft, right because he really, he really wants
- 44:33Speaker 5: to go to a team that will allow him to
- 44:36Speaker 5: play on both sides of the ball.
- 44:38Speaker 6: I mean, that's that's that's what my understanding is.
- 44:41Speaker 5: I mean, he had an interview with a with a
- 44:43Speaker 5: sports reporter from CBS CBS Sports, and uh, you know,
- 44:46Speaker 5: he pretty much put it out there that he wants
- 44:48Speaker 5: to go to a team that will allow him to
- 44:50Speaker 5: explore both of them.
- 44:51Speaker 2: So what do you think. What do you think the
- 44:53Speaker 2: primary position would be?
- 44:55Speaker 5: Well, for me, I mean I think for him coming
- 44:57Speaker 5: in as a rookie, I think he should start at
- 45:00Speaker 5: defense and then slowly let him, you know, kind of
- 45:04Speaker 5: be integrated into an offensive skin.
- 45:06Speaker 2: That's the way we've always seen it. We've seen it
- 45:09Speaker 2: defense to offense. We've never seen it offense to dec
- 45:13Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. I understand. But here's the thing
- 45:19Speaker 2: I'm thinking, if if if I need a receiver, okay,
- 45:25Speaker 2: I can, I can get him. I can get him,
- 45:30Speaker 2: and if by some chance he's not good enough, there's
- 45:34Speaker 2: another place. So you're saying receiver would be the easiest transition.
- 45:38Speaker 2: I think so. So you said that'd be an easier
- 45:40Speaker 2: transition to bed. Where are you gonna play? Okay, So
- 45:44Speaker 2: everybody's got a different kind of scheme, right everybody. Everybody's
- 45:47Speaker 2: gonna be out in the islands a corner. Yeah, he's
- 45:51Speaker 2: a corner. The question is is he is he a man?
- 45:54Speaker 2: Some teams play more man than man than others. Can
- 45:57Speaker 2: he play man and man? We don't necessarily Just because
- 45:59Speaker 2: you cover guys in colleges don't necessarily mean you can
- 46:01Speaker 2: cover him in the pros. Again, the piece that we're
- 46:05Speaker 2: not thinking about is pro is not college. So everybody's look,
- 46:11Speaker 2: if you look at his statue, look at his plane,
- 46:14Speaker 2: forget it, forget all that. It's a whole new window.
- 46:19Speaker 3: All right.
- 46:19Speaker 2: So let me ask a different question. So usage rate.
- 46:22Speaker 2: So let's let's take that usage rate. Like in college,
- 46:25Speaker 2: he was playing one hundred plus players a game. Now,
- 46:27Speaker 2: obviously you ain't gonna be doing that in an NFL.
- 46:30Speaker 2: But from a usage rate, do you think that he
- 46:34Speaker 2: would actually be able to be more durable playing defense
- 46:38Speaker 2: and then supplementing you know, one two for receivers, because
- 46:45Speaker 2: I'm saying, if you're playing offense, I mean again, deep defense,
- 46:49Speaker 2: but y'all do a ton of running. But you know,
- 46:51Speaker 2: it's a different level of running straight ahead, you know
- 46:53Speaker 2: what I'm saying, Because like you said, if you're playing
- 46:55Speaker 2: a zone, it's it's different, right, So if you're doing
- 46:58Speaker 2: all that running as a receiver, then on the next
- 47:01Speaker 2: series you're gonna come in here and play dB. I
- 47:04Speaker 2: don't know. See here's here's and I understand exactly what
- 47:08Speaker 2: you're saying, and and and I'll even concede a little
- 47:11Speaker 2: bit to it. But what I will say is here's
- 47:14Speaker 2: the problem with it. To me, if he's a receiver, okay,
- 47:21Speaker 2: he's he he's got the ability to catch the ball, run,
- 47:25Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. When he starts playing dB,
- 47:29Speaker 2: now that the physicality of that side of it is
- 47:33Speaker 2: now on him because you gotta tackle run. You gotta
- 47:36Speaker 2: come in and you gotta tackle running backs, you gotta
- 47:39Speaker 2: tackle some big receivers, you gotta hit a tight end,
- 47:41Speaker 2: you gotta you gotta take on alignment, that kind of
- 47:45Speaker 2: that punk, that type of punishment. So you're saying, like
- 47:50Speaker 2: doing that full time and then Seth will be harder,
- 47:54Speaker 2: to be harder. Okay. So another question, So if you say, okay,
- 47:58Speaker 2: he's gonna come in as a receiver, that's gonna be
- 47:59Speaker 2: the primary position, at what point do you pit him
- 48:02Speaker 2: as a dB and ready to throw the ball. If
- 48:08Speaker 2: he's such a great cover, maybe I put him on
- 48:10Speaker 2: the best the best receiver. I put him on the
- 48:13Speaker 2: slot guy. You know. So you know, so to me,
- 48:17Speaker 2: I see it that way. I see him more in
- 48:20Speaker 2: that situation, you know, because I'm gonna make the case
- 48:24Speaker 2: he's gonna be he's gonna be as talented because when
- 48:29Speaker 2: you play Dome, which is four D four corners. He's
- 48:33Speaker 2: gonna be as good as one of the He's gonna
- 48:35Speaker 2: be one of those fours. I'll give you that, Okay,
- 48:37Speaker 2: So when you play Nickel, you got three, he's probably
- 48:41Speaker 2: gonna he very well could be in those three. So now,
- 48:46Speaker 2: but he might be one of your top receivers. M
- 48:51Speaker 2: I mean, he definitely probably gonna be in the top
- 48:52Speaker 2: five because received receivers. You're gonna play five or six
- 48:55Speaker 2: receivers game, yes, and.
- 48:57Speaker 5: It's gonna be a real challenge whatever franchise picks him up.
- 49:00Speaker 5: I mean, you think about it. I mean, he's gonna
- 49:01Speaker 5: go in the first round, and he's gonna go for
- 49:03Speaker 5: a significant amount of money. So whatever team picks him up,
- 49:06Speaker 5: they're gonna have to find a way to protect their
- 49:08Speaker 5: assets and protect their player. So you know, you're gonna
- 49:11Speaker 5: you're gonna.
- 49:12Speaker 2: And they probably got a plan, yes, And I would
- 49:14Speaker 2: think they will be going to Cleveland. So I don't
- 49:16Speaker 2: know if they got to you said that, I don't know.
- 49:21Speaker 2: That's what I don't know. And see and and and
- 49:24Speaker 2: again to that point. This is like the this is
- 49:27Speaker 2: like the number one quarterback going to to the worst team, right,
- 49:32Speaker 2: you know, yeah, and and and now you're putting yourself
- 49:36Speaker 2: in a situation. So now the question goes. I go
- 49:39Speaker 2: back to your answer and say, I don't want to
- 49:42Speaker 2: be a receiver because do you have a quarterback for me?
- 49:45Speaker 2: Let me be a DV. And that's what I guess.
- 49:47Speaker 2: That's my point. Yeah, because you when you look at
- 49:51Speaker 2: usage rate, and the thing is, if you have a
- 49:54Speaker 2: bad offense, then to your point, you're going to be
- 49:57Speaker 2: getting beat up because you got a company receiver, got
- 50:00Speaker 2: to tackle, you got to take on block, you got
- 50:02Speaker 2: to do a lot as a dB. Then I got
- 50:04Speaker 2: to come in there and I'm running empty routes because
- 50:06Speaker 2: maybe I got a bad office line on my quarterbacks
- 50:08Speaker 2: not seeing me, and my usage rate is going to
- 50:11Speaker 2: be high, but maybe my production is not going to
- 50:13Speaker 2: be able to mag depending on where I'm going. So
- 50:16Speaker 2: I think, to me, I would almost circle it back.
- 50:21Speaker 2: You want to do what you do, and I understand that,
- 50:23Speaker 2: but maybe it also depends on where you land at.
- 50:26Speaker 6: That's a good point.
- 50:28Speaker 5: Person that are surrounding you, what kind of players, But
- 50:32Speaker 5: I mean, don't you guys agree to that. It's the NFL,
- 50:35Speaker 5: It's not college. Okay, he did phenomenal at Colorado playing
- 50:39Speaker 5: both sides of the ball. But when you get to
- 50:41Speaker 5: that level at the NFL, you've got to kind of
- 50:43Speaker 5: hone in on what your your specific position is and
- 50:48Speaker 5: just focus on that and so you can be the
- 50:50Speaker 5: best player that you can be at that position. I mean,
- 50:52Speaker 5: especially if you want to you know, if you have
- 50:54Speaker 5: Hall of Fame, you know, dreams and aspirations, you got
- 50:59Speaker 5: to be good at one thing and really really be
- 51:02Speaker 5: good at it makes sense.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Here's a question, is I think maybe Dion might have
- 51:07Speaker 2: played some snap about to go there? Yeah, he might
- 51:10Speaker 2: have played a couple of snaps at receiver, but where
- 51:13Speaker 2: do we know him as we know him as a
- 51:15Speaker 2: DV kick returner. But but I mean, if you get
- 51:19Speaker 2: to your point earlier when you got the deon, because
- 51:22Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a Dion shadow has opposed
- 51:24Speaker 2: as much as is a Dion influence because Dion he
- 51:28Speaker 2: played he played dB, he played receiver, also played baseball.
- 51:34Speaker 2: So I'm thinking in Travis Hunter's mind, he thinking, well, heck,
- 51:37Speaker 2: if Dion played baseball and football, I can at least
- 51:39Speaker 2: play two positions on just playing football, and and so
- 51:43Speaker 2: he might be thinking like that too, and and and
- 51:45Speaker 2: it's justifiable because he's right there. He's right there with him.
- 51:50Speaker 2: But I'm gonna make like I said, man, Jerry Rice,
- 51:56Speaker 2: great receiver, he just played receiver. Yeah, Andre Risen, Andre Reid,
- 52:07Speaker 2: Sterling Sharp, all those dudes. Every good receiver I know
- 52:14Speaker 2: played receiver. And I bet you they played dB at
- 52:18Speaker 2: some point, yeah, but not a.
- 52:20Speaker 6: Yeah, but not at the NFL level. Right, What I'm just.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Saying maybe in high school, you know, they played both ways,
- 52:27Speaker 2: but they became one thing. If this is new, this
- 52:34Speaker 2: would be the new. This would be the newest thing
- 52:37Speaker 2: to add to professional football, a two way guy. And
- 52:42Speaker 2: I think Dion would love that to happen. To his book.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I just don't know how you, like I said, I
- 52:48Speaker 2: mean to your point, I mean, even if you look
- 52:51Speaker 2: at modern receivers, you look at the Randy Moss and
- 52:52Speaker 2: Calvin Johnson's and different things of that nature, I just
- 52:55Speaker 2: don't know how you play receiver. And like, if you're
- 52:59Speaker 2: like if you're a starting receiver or if you're you're
- 53:03Speaker 2: in the top basically, if you're in the top five,
- 53:04Speaker 2: which basically it means you're a starting receiver pretty much, right,
- 53:07Speaker 2: if you're in the top five rotation, maybe the fifth guy.
- 53:09Speaker 2: That means you can to come in probably almost every
- 53:11Speaker 2: series at some point. I don't know how you do that.
- 53:15Speaker 2: And then you play dB. We've never seen that before.
- 53:18Speaker 2: If he can pull that off, I mean, and then again,
- 53:21Speaker 2: how long can you pull it?
- 53:22Speaker 6: Because that's another good point to that very point.
- 53:26Speaker 2: They're gonna test this. Yeah, they're going to Yeah, they're
- 53:30Speaker 2: gonna test this. They're gonna want to see what he
- 53:33Speaker 2: can actually do. If it's I just don't think it's
- 53:37Speaker 2: gonna be sustainable.
- 53:38Speaker 5: And the cerebral part of it, you know, you're you're
- 53:41Speaker 5: you're learning so many more complex plays and routes that
- 53:44Speaker 5: that you did compared to college. I mean, that's a
- 53:47Speaker 5: lot to have to learn and you know, perform on
- 53:50Speaker 5: the field.
- 53:50Speaker 6: So that's another part of it.
- 53:53Speaker 2: Physical and we've seen this before, Like you seen like
- 53:55Speaker 2: the Cordell Steward's right, but he played multiple positions on offense.
- 54:00Speaker 2: I've seen of Dick Verbel, Frank Verbel, he's a coach now,
- 54:06Speaker 2: we've seen him. He was a linebacker and he would
- 54:08Speaker 2: come in on the goal line packages. You see Taysom
- 54:11Speaker 2: Hill in New Orleans. But again, you just the way
- 54:14Speaker 2: he's talking about doing it is unpressed for modern football least.
- 54:19Speaker 2: I'm not mad. I'm not mad if he if he
- 54:22Speaker 2: if he's successful at it, you know, I you know,
- 54:25Speaker 2: I don't want to. I don't want to hate on him.
- 54:28Speaker 2: I would rather but I would rather him because again,
- 54:31Speaker 2: when you start looking at all of the the situations
- 54:36Speaker 2: that come with with football, all the contact that comes
- 54:39Speaker 2: with football. Now it's not as bad as it used
- 54:41Speaker 2: to be, but it's still gonna be out there. But now,
- 54:44Speaker 2: if you're playing on both sides of the ball enough
- 54:48Speaker 2: to where you're getting the ball, you're getting hit, you're
- 54:51Speaker 2: over on the other side tackling getting hit or hitting
- 54:54Speaker 2: somebody that ain't that is not a safety issue, you know.
- 55:00Speaker 2: I mean, now, what you're doing is you're like just
- 55:03Speaker 2: you're just asking for some kind of damage. Yeah, you know,
- 55:08Speaker 2: it's just too many people. Yeah, there's just too many
- 55:11Speaker 2: plays there, you know. And I just don't, you know,
- 55:16Speaker 2: I hope he doesn't. I don't hope he can't. I
- 55:20Speaker 2: hope he just doesn't do it. And I just don't
- 55:23Speaker 2: think there's a reason. There's not a reason to do
- 55:26Speaker 2: it other than just to say you did it or
- 55:29Speaker 2: you were the first to do it and all that,
- 55:32Speaker 2: and the credit falls all over the place. But by
- 55:36Speaker 2: the time he plays six, seven, eight years, then what Yeah,
- 55:41Speaker 2: that's gonna be the question. All right, Well, ladies and gentlemen,
- 55:46Speaker 2: hope you enjoyed the show. We're gonna get out of
