- 0:33Wait, where's the button?
- 0:35Welcome to drive through episode number 43.
- 0:39This is our monthly recap where we've put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:43motorsport and random car adjacent news.
- 0:46Now let's pull up to window number one for some automotive news.
- 0:51This is our season five kickoff heading into a long run of a hundred
- 0:58different episodes coming your way.
- 1:00If tuning in for the first time.
- 1:01And that's just next week.
- 1:03Yeah, right?
- 1:04We have a very aggressive schedule here.
- 1:06No, season five is action packed.
- 1:08But first, before we jump into our automotive news, Brad,
- 1:10we need a cyber truck update.
- 1:12The update is there's no update.
- 1:14Oh, come on.
- 1:15Have you been able to ditch that?
- 1:17Allotment yet.
- 1:18Nope.
- 1:18But I will say I saw on cars and bids that somebody is selling a cyber truck.
- 1:24And the current bid is up to 150, 000 just for the allotment.
- 1:28Well, no, that's for the actual truck.
- 1:30I believe they took ownership and then they're selling it.
- 1:32Is Tesla suing them yet?
- 1:33I don't know.
- 1:34It didn't say in the ad whether they were being sued or not.
- 1:36But if you think about it, that's actually not that.
- 1:38I mean, I guess it is a lot.
- 1:40It's 33 percent markup profit.
- 1:42The Cybertruck is definitely not out of the news.
- 1:44I actually avoided putting it into this drive thru episode because we talked
- 1:48about it so much and it's just unending.
- 1:50I mean, the internet is obviously full of trolls, but it's also relentless.
- 1:54In terms of the things that are going on with the Cybertruck.
- 1:57There's literally like a plea out there to say stop abusing Cybertrucks.
- 2:01Like people are doing the craziest things to them and say like, see,
- 2:04they're just big pieces of junk.
- 2:06And it's like, all right, guys, give it a rest.
- 2:08The same shit happened when the Ford F 150 Raptor first came out.
- 2:12There's a lot of hate because people were taking them out to
- 2:15sand dunes and stuff and literally.
- 2:17Jumping them five, six feet in the air off these jumps.
- 2:21Then the trucks were landing and the frames were cracking.
- 2:24Like the bed was separating from the body of the truck.
- 2:27I mean, the cab was breaking.
- 2:28I mean, there are all kinds of problems.
- 2:30And this is the original Raptor with the V8, not the EcoBoost Raptor.
- 2:34At that time, that is how Ford had advertised the truck, but Ford was
- 2:37getting a lot of hate for the Raptor.
- 2:40Haters going to hate, I think is the key term here.
- 2:42And players going to play.
- 2:43Haters always going to hate.
- 2:44Yeah, play is going to play hate is going to hate.
- 2:47Jokes aside, we kick this off talking about the cyber truck
- 2:50again, because the showcase for this month is a little bit different.
- 2:54It's a little bit more personal.
- 2:55And I wanted to touch on some homework that I've done about what is the real cost
- 3:00of ownership of an EV in the year 2024?
- 3:04What I've done Come to realize is there's a lot of hearsay and
- 3:09speculation and tinfoil hats about what's going on in the EV world.
- 3:15And there's just some real concrete information that I've come across.
- 3:20And I'm going to get into this as we go along.
- 3:22I got to first start off by saying, if you're listening to this for the first
- 3:24time, we do own quote unquote an EV.
- 3:27So does Brad now you have a hybrid, we have a plug in hybrid.
- 3:30Both of us have vans.
- 3:32My wife's had hers since 2019.
- 3:34The plug in hybrid tries to be all electric all the time.
- 3:37And then it switches the gas 16 kilowatt battery, get 33 to 36 to
- 3:41almost 40 miles out of the battery, depending on the temperature.
- 3:44You know, if it's summer versus winter, stuff like that.
- 3:46You know, she loves it record setting miles per gallon, you know,
- 3:50almost 50 miles of the gallon.
- 3:51She's gone almost 1100 miles between Phillips, like all this astronomical
- 3:55stuff, like blowing our previous diesels completely out of the water, right?
- 3:59Like, wow, this thing's incredible, but here we are.
- 4:02Five years later, and what's it really like to own a plug in
- 4:05hybrid or an EV or whatever it is?
- 4:07Oh, we're going to qualify this, but what's it like to own a plug in hybrid EV?
- 4:11And then what's it like to own a Chrysler plug in hybrid EV?
- 4:15Cost of ownership and convenience expense and things like that.
- 4:19We're going to get into that.
- 4:21But what kicked off this entire investigation?
- 4:24Actually goes back to many drive through episodes we've had in the past, talking
- 4:29about the electricity availability, the infrastructure in our homes, the
- 4:34infrastructure commercially available, the power grid states that can't
- 4:39even maintain their air conditioning in the summer because the grid is
- 4:42overstressed, all this kind of stuff.
- 4:43And people are like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:45You know, we'll put up some more windmills or, you know, we'll
- 4:47make up the difference somehow.
- 4:48But the reality of the situation is.
- 4:50We live in a house that was built in the late seventies, early eighties.
- 4:54A lot of stuff that was to code back then doesn't meet the code of a house
- 4:58that was built, let's say in 2019 when my wife's Pacifica was built.
- 5:01And so we got a letter in the mail.
- 5:03Yeah, we still get those, you know, like paper mail.
- 5:05So I got this letter in the mail from our utility company and it was talking
- 5:09about upgrading, adding a level two charger to your garage and this and that.
- 5:15And I'm reading this letter and it sounds really good.
- 5:17It was very technical and not a lot of marketing.
- 5:19Fluff.
- 5:20So I was like, you know what?
- 5:21You've got my attention.
- 5:22I'm going to reach out, contact this number, fill out this
- 5:25form, all this kind of stuff.
- 5:26And in this solicitation, it says 1, 100 and I'm like, that's the magic number.
- 5:31As we know, working on race cars, everything's 1, 100
- 5:34every time you turn around.
- 5:35So I'm like, you've got my attention.
- 5:37Let me see how bad this is going to be.
- 5:39What started as an 1, 100 offer has turned into an 11, 000 nightmare.
- 5:44And let me explain.
- 5:45So real talk, there is a lot of moving parts when it comes to upgrading the
- 5:52house to make it acceptable to have an EV.
- 5:55Not just a plug in hybrid that has a small battery, but imagine a Tesla.
- 5:59Or a Rivian or a Volkswagen ID where it's got a much larger
- 6:03battery with that extended range three, four, five, 600 miles.
- 6:07You don't want to wait a week like that guy in Canada with a
- 6:10Hyundai to be able to charge it.
- 6:11Level two charger is sort of the minimum.
- 6:13Now we're still in a level one hundred and ten bolt charger and we can get
- 6:17the van charged roughly overnight.
- 6:19So how did we get to 11, 000?
- 6:21Well, let me explain like a lot of people, especially on the East Coast where
- 6:25houses are a lot older, but there are new developments popping up all the time.
- 6:30But if you have a house from the 1950s through the early 2000s, a lot of the code
- 6:35and all that kind of stuff was the same.
- 6:36The service to the house ours is on the one 50 side because we
- 6:39were built in the late seventies.
- 6:40So the first hurdle became, well, your service is too small.
- 6:44We need to upgrade the entire fuse panel in the house.
- 6:47Okay, well, what do we got to upgrade to?
- 6:49Well, technically.
- 6:50200 in the house to be code just for the house to future proof the house.
- 6:54You got to upgrade to 200 amp, but realistically you need a separate 200
- 6:57amp service in the garage because of the way the house is built and this and that
- 7:01and yada, yada, and then we got to make sure that the power lines underground are
- 7:06enough to deliver 400 amp to the house.
- 7:08You know, maybe we have to run new service underground.
- 7:10That's on us to do that, but maybe there's a hidden cost there too.
- 7:14We're not a hundred percent sure yet.
- 7:15It started to compound and then you need this, and then you've got to buy this
- 7:19And then because you have two separate services, one on the garage side and
- 7:23one on the house side, then you need a kill switch because the code says that
- 7:26you have to be able to terminate all the electricity in one spot and more and more
- 7:30and more and more and all this stuff.
- 7:31The next thing you know, the guy comes back and he goes, well, here's your quote.
- 7:34It's 11 grand.
- 7:35Obviously your mileage may vary.
- 7:37It could cost you five grand.
- 7:38It could cost you 12 grand.
- 7:40What I heard from the utility company was the average was about 8, 800 bucks to
- 7:45do the upgrade if you don't have 200 amp service and all this other stuff, right?
- 7:49You don't have a much more modern house.
- 7:50So that's still, let's say 10 grand.
- 7:53And I'm like, what?
- 7:54I don't think I'm special.
- 7:56We live in a modest home.
- 7:58And I think a lot of other people, not just in my neighborhood where the
- 8:01houses were built at the same time, but across middle America would be faced
- 8:06with the same problem if they're trying to go to EV and just solely EV, not
- 8:11just a small battery plug in hybrid.
- 8:13And I'm like, this is an astronomical amount of money for people.
- 8:17Not everybody has.
- 8:1811, 15, 20 grand sitting aside to make this massive utility
- 8:24upgrade to their houses.
- 8:26So I'm scratching my head going, how is this tenable long term?
- 8:31Well, two things.
- 8:31One, I must be the luckiest guy in the world because my garage
- 8:34already has a separate power account with a 200 amp board.
- 8:39So I've already got 200 in the garage separate from the house,
- 8:42completely separate, separate account, separate everything to that's what
- 8:45home equity loans are for bud.
- 8:48You overextended up to detonate to their eyeballs.
- 8:51Remember that old commercial?
- 8:52The guy's like, I've got a mansion and I live on a golf course
- 8:55and I'm riding my lawnmower and I'm up to my eyeballs in debt.
- 8:58And that's true.
- 8:59And that's where, again, it becomes this total cost of ownership thing.
- 9:02And we talked about low budget.
- 9:04EVs before Hyundai's got some all the way up to 40, 000.
- 9:08That's like the low budget now, right?
- 9:10We're like the Mach E all these other kinds of cars that sort of fit in
- 9:13that window between 25 and 40, 000.
- 9:15I'm sitting here going, you go and buy this EV and you have this
- 9:18fantasy that I'm going to get free electrons at the library.
- 9:21Well, guess what?
- 9:22You got to swipe a credit card there.
- 9:23I'm going to get free electrons when I park at Ikea.
- 9:25Guess what?
- 9:25You got to swipe a credit card there because it's all.
- 9:27AmeriCharge and CradlePoint and all these different services,
- 9:30it doesn't cost nothing.
- 9:31It's very rare to find free electrons anymore.
- 9:35And so I'm like, okay, well, do you want to sit in the parking lot at
- 9:38the library for 45 minutes to charge?
- 9:41I mean, it's a long time.
- 9:42Granted, you could be doing other stuff.
- 9:43Maybe you could go for a walk, take the dog, you know, whatever
- 9:45it is fine, but you've got to go out of your way to get power.
- 9:48If you don't have like you have the 200 amp extra service to set
- 9:52up that level two charger at home.
- 9:54You just bought a 30, 000 Model 3.
- 9:56That's what they're supposed to cost.
- 9:58And now you're faced with an 11, 000 bill, maybe a 20, 000 upcharge on that.
- 10:03So now you're 50 grand in the hole on this EV.
- 10:07And Tonya and I talked about this, how much gas.
- 10:09And diesel for that matter, can you buy for 10, 000?
- 10:14So these are things you got to think about.
- 10:15Yeah, I get that.
- 10:16We're saving the planet and all these kinds of things.
- 10:18That's debatable too.
- 10:19Exactly.
- 10:20I'm still interested because I want to future proof my garage.
- 10:24I've got some other things I want to do.
- 10:26Some heavier equipment that we've had issues with, you know, mountain
- 10:29man, Dan brings over a welder and it's like a minor brownout.
- 10:32You literally cannot run a vacuum cleaner in the garage while the van is charging,
- 10:36because it'll knock all the circuits out.
- 10:38Like it's just, it's a mess.
- 10:39So I'm sort of like, well, if I make the investment, maybe we'll get it back out
- 10:43of the house later if we sell it, because you can come in and say, look, we're
- 10:46already set up for EV and we have his and her chargers on both sides of the garage
- 10:51and you know, all this wonderful stuff.
- 10:53Still, it's hard to get away from a five figure price tag.
- 10:56It's like, ah, that hurts.
- 10:58If we take that off the table and say, everybody's just got a tax return.
- 11:03They got an extra 15 grand to spend on upgrading their house.
- 11:06So they can, everybody can get an EV in the future.
- 11:08What about the grid tax returns?
- 11:11Are these getting 15 grand back?
- 11:13We're living in fantasy land now, right?
- 11:15Yeah, we are.
- 11:16Pull our pennies, but let's just say you could find the
- 11:19money to upgrade your house.
- 11:21Do you do it?
- 11:21Do you not?
- 11:22But then also the stress on the grid.
- 11:25Are there parts of the country that are better prepared?
- 11:27Like Tennessee, especially like Chattanooga near TVA, stuff like that.
- 11:30They have the self healing power grid, very modern, very progressive,
- 11:34but that doesn't exist everywhere.
- 11:36We know California struggles.
- 11:38We know Texas can struggle.
- 11:39The East Coast, maybe not so much.
- 11:41But I think if everybody here from Massachusetts to Florida converted
- 11:46their houses to be EV ready, we'd have a really big problem.
- 11:50We're also just talking about houses.
- 11:51There's also people that live in apartment complexes and things like that.
- 11:55Are they excluded from being able to have an EV because
- 11:58they live in such a facility?
- 12:01Or are we going to require these landlords to upgrade their service?
- 12:04Not only For one family, but the entirety of their property and their unit.
- 12:08And that actually is a really great segue back into the episode we did with
- 12:12Henry Grabar, because a lot of those complexes, the apartment buildings
- 12:16and condominiums and all that is predicated on parking availability.
- 12:19And so I won't get into all that, go back to that episode from the end of last year.
- 12:23It's fascinating.
- 12:24He wrote a whole book about it, about how parking changes the world.
- 12:27And it really explains how parking dictates.
- 12:30How houses are built.
- 12:31But we did talk about it on his episode about the EV grid, how this
- 12:35is going to work, parking lots are going to have to be changed over.
- 12:38So that's another whole layer of complexity, but you're right.
- 12:42Apartment buildings, not everybody lives in a single family home.
- 12:45Here's the other thing.
- 12:46It's not an overnight process.
- 12:48They make it seem like it's going to take a day.
- 12:50They can come in and do it.
- 12:51Sure.
- 12:52If you're already set up for it, they're going to add another breaker.
- 12:55They're going to install the level two charger, which by the way,
- 12:57you have to purchase separately.
- 12:59So you're looking at a juice box, you're looking at a whatever,
- 13:02and that's another six to eight hundred bucks that you gotta spend.
- 13:04But they'll sell it to you, you know, they get them in volume, you
- 13:07get a slight discount, it's like fifty bucks less than what you'd
- 13:09buy for on Amazon if you ordered it.
- 13:11Okay, fine, sure.
- 13:12You're gonna be without power for multiple days.
- 13:14Because they got to do this whole upgrade.
- 13:17Not only are they changing my main service panel, they got to
- 13:19change my meter box on the outside.
- 13:21They're like ripping everything out down to the bare wires to
- 13:24be able to do this project.
- 13:25If the underground wiring is insufficient, which they still have to figure out at
- 13:30this point because they have to do a service call and this utility has to get
- 13:33involved and all these kinds of things.
- 13:34If they have to add more power underground, they got to go all
- 13:38the way back to the transformer.
- 13:39They might have to upgrade the transformer.
- 13:40Now there's all these other moving parts.
- 13:42It takes almost two months to get that part done.
- 13:46So we're still waiting for their initial survey to be completed to see
- 13:50is there enough service underground?
- 13:52Because we don't have power lines in this neighborhood.
- 13:54It was one of those like early, we're going to do everything
- 13:56underground sort of deals.
- 13:57So they got to go investigate all that.
- 13:59And then once they get that done, it could be another month before they
- 14:02can get us in the loop to schedule the process, to even begin to take the house
- 14:06offline for a couple of days, change out the service and add all this stuff.
- 14:10Then they're punching holes in the walls, you know, all this kind of thing.
- 14:13This is going to be like a 90 to 120 day effort.
- 14:17And I would have zero expectation that anything happens in two months.
- 14:23Because you as a residential query are very low on the order in the
- 14:28utility company's work list, the priority who is going to go to
- 14:32hospitals or other things like that, they'll get the priority of the work.
- 14:36They might have said two months, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're dragged
- 14:40on for months and months and months.
- 14:41We'll catch back up with Eric in season six.
- 14:44A hundred percent.
- 14:45Yeah, we'll still be talking about my level two charger that I don't have.
- 14:48Again, just bought my EV.
- 14:49I don't have my charger.
- 14:51I want to upgrade the house.
- 14:52I still got to go to the library, you know, to go find free electrons
- 14:56because I still can't charge at home.
- 14:57That's the other thing.
- 14:58Time is valuable.
- 15:00How much is it costing me to sit there to get my electrons at the library?
- 15:04And then how much is it going to cost me later when my bill spikes?
- 15:09Because they got to do some other metering and all this kind of thing when you plug
- 15:13the EV in to say, we're not going to charge you at the maximum rate because
- 15:16the price of electricity has also gone up.
- 15:19This is all getting really, really complicated very quickly.
- 15:22And I already noticed that our electric bill had gone up when we got the
- 15:26Pacifica, but five years ago, our electricity, you know, negotiated
- 15:30rate and all this kind of stuff.
- 15:31It was low.
- 15:32It was like, Oh man, what's an extra 40 bucks a month.
- 15:34I would pay more than that in fuel.
- 15:36But now Five years later, our electricity bill has doubled.
- 15:40Is that a result of the van?
- 15:41Is that a result of the price of electricity?
- 15:44It all plays a factor and we're not getting any special sub metering or
- 15:49off hours when we plug in the band.
- 15:51We've asked, we have a level one.
- 15:52Can we get the exemption?
- 15:54You know, when it runs between these hours and the power company's like,
- 15:57nah, it's just like, you've got a stove running for 13 hours at a time.
- 16:00And that's exactly what it is.
- 16:02It's like a stove running with the broiler on.
- 16:04All night.
- 16:05So it's costing a ton.
- 16:07I'm starting to wonder, is it worth it?
- 16:09What really brings into the question, is it worth it?
- 16:12You made jokes about the cost of ownership of an EV versus the cost
- 16:15of ownership of a Chrysler EV.
- 16:17So this is where it gets ironic.
- 16:20President's day, everybody's off from school.
- 16:22We're home, got the day off, you know, that kind of thing.
- 16:24We're like, what are we gonna do?
- 16:25President's day.
- 16:26And my wife goes, Hey, you know, there was a recall letter from the dealership.
- 16:29This is a great day to take the van in to get it done because I could drop you guys
- 16:34off and you know, the whole thing, right?
- 16:36We took it in for this recall and it's had something to do with power control
- 16:39module and all this kind of stuff.
- 16:41And we're like, oh, okay, cool.
- 16:42She mentioned to me the week before.
- 16:45That the van was doing something weird.
- 16:46It would flash the check engine light and then would go away.
- 16:49It wouldn't stay on.
- 16:50It's like an intermittent code.
- 16:51My wife's got an Autel scanner.
- 16:53She hooks up her phone, Bluetooth to it, pulls down.
- 16:56She showed it to me later.
- 16:57She goes, it kind of aligns itself with the recall.
- 17:00This is perfect timing.
- 17:01We're going to take the van in, get the recall done.
- 17:03Then check engine light goes away.
- 17:04We'll report the whole thing and blah, blah, blah.
- 17:06And the service writer's like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:07Great.
- 17:08This is awesome.
- 17:09Nobody shows us the scan codes and whatever.
- 17:11And they did their own scan and their own stuff.
- 17:13A week goes by.
- 17:14You don't hear anything.
- 17:15It's like, what the hell is going on?
- 17:17Chrysler service is neither here nor there.
- 17:19I'm not gonna badmouth the dealership or anything like that.
- 17:21They've been good to us.
- 17:22But we were smart to buy the super extended max care 12
- 17:27year warranty on this thing.
- 17:28Because I knew going into this, it's not Chrysler's hybrid.
- 17:31It supposedly, allegedly is Ford's.
- 17:34It's not their transmission, you know, all this kind of stuff.
- 17:36So yaddy yaddy.
- 17:37I don't want to have to work on this, nor do I want to have to
- 17:40pay when something goes belly up.
- 17:41We finally get a phone call and the guy's like, Hey, been meaning to call
- 17:45you, put in a ticket to Chrysler.
- 17:47Star, which is the organization that does all the parts distribution,
- 17:50is sending a new transmission.
- 17:51And I'm like, what?
- 17:52So it's sort of like went in for a health check, had to amputate your arm.
- 17:56What the hell is happening here?
- 17:58So the guy's like, it's all just intertwined and we got
- 18:02to put a new tranny in it.
- 18:03Because the hybrid is in the transmission.
- 18:05A lot of people don't know that.
- 18:06So if your hybrid's going, your forward motion is going to go because
- 18:10it's all built into the trans.
- 18:11For those of you following at home, I believe this is Eric's
- 18:1415th transmission in this Pacifica.
- 18:16You're not far off.
- 18:18I think you get transmission bingo!
- 18:20To bring everybody up to speed, it is not the original trans.
- 18:23The first trans, the stock one, I don't know what happened to that because it
- 18:28went bonkers to the point where you would put it in drive and it would either
- 18:32decide to like lurch forward like the parking brake was stuck on or it would
- 18:37just go backwards at maximum speed.
- 18:38You had a hard time stopping because the brakes are electrically connected.
- 18:42It was a nightmare and we literally beached it on the side of the road and
- 18:46told AAA, or actually we called Chrysler, take this directly to the dealership.
- 18:50Not our problem.
- 18:50So they put a new trans in it then, but they put an updated transmission in it.
- 18:54So we're like, Oh, cool.
- 18:55This is going to be awesome.
- 18:57This thing is going to last forever between trans two and this one.
- 19:00It's only been a year and a half.
- 19:02She's only put maybe like 15, 000 miles on it, maybe a little bit more, 20 or so.
- 19:07So it hasn't been that long, right?
- 19:08We're like, Oh, this is nuts that they're telling us we need another transmission.
- 19:12Then two more weeks goes by.
- 19:14So the van is gone for three weeks.
- 19:17We were talking about time is money.
- 19:19Luckily she's driving my car and I'm driving my hoopty that, you
- 19:23know, sits for long periods of time.
- 19:24So we got an extra car.
- 19:25We're very fortunate in that respect.
- 19:27Not a lot of people are fortunate with that, but it's something to think about.
- 19:30You hear these.
- 19:30Horror stories about Teslas and accidents.
- 19:33And they're out for months and months at a time because the parts just aren't
- 19:36there and because chips, and in our case, the van was down for three weeks.
- 19:40The first time the trans went, it was down for a month.
- 19:43Again, no communication.
- 19:45Suddenly we get a call one day and it's like, van's ready to be picked up.
- 19:48Uh, okay.
- 19:49So we go through all that and we come home.
- 19:51And, but I'm reading the sheets.
- 19:53Not one sheet that says transmission replaced, did service check at
- 19:5780, 000 miles or whatever, right?
- 19:59No, it's pages of stuff.
- 20:01What I sort of discern from all this is, I think they pulled the trans.
- 20:06Because inside of this whole combuberation that they've created, there's some
- 20:11auxiliary water pumps and it was leaking.
- 20:14And I don't know if that interferes with the electronics.
- 20:16I'm sort of like trying to read between the lines.
- 20:17I'm trying to do some homework.
- 20:19And it's one of these deals that like a proper German car would be.
- 20:22You can only reach it.
- 20:23When the service position is engine out, they got to get the hybrid out.
- 20:27And I'm looking at the parts list and all this stuff.
- 20:28They changed.
- 20:29Luckily, we didn't have to pay a cent for it, but I asked the guy,
- 20:32I was like, how much would it have cost if I had to replace this thing?
- 20:35And here we are.
- 20:36We're back to that magic number, 11, 000.
- 20:40That's parts and labor, right?
- 20:41And I'm like, this is insane.
- 20:43So thank goodness we had the foresight to buy the extended warranty and they've been
- 20:49super awesome about covering everything and any problem we've ever had with it.
- 20:52To your joke from earlier, the Chrysler has been amazing.
- 20:55So I haven't been paid for anything.
- 20:56And it's actually been, except for this.
- 20:59Which I don't blame Chrysler for, because it's really not their hybrid.
- 21:03It's been trouble free, but the trouble it's had has been debilitating, right?
- 21:08So it's Sketch 22.
- 21:10Didn't it also brick itself in your garage at some point?
- 21:13That happened within the first month we got it.
- 21:16And what that was really all about was, we bought it as a 2019.
- 21:20It was an S model, de chromed, like all this kind of stuff, and
- 21:24a special paint color, whatever.
- 21:25Apparently it had been sitting on the lot.
- 21:28Where we got it from for like an extended period of time and they
- 21:32weren't running it or whatever.
- 21:33And I guess there was a drain on the main battery.
- 21:35Basically the main battery, the main 12 volt battery,
- 21:38like any car has shit the bed.
- 21:41It bricked itself because it wants to be an EV first.
- 21:44It wouldn't even try to kick over to gas, run the alternator or anything like that.
- 21:48We were stuck.
- 21:49So they came and hauled it.
- 21:50They replaced the battery for free and it's never been an issue.
- 21:53So I'm like, you know what?
- 21:54That happens on a regular car.
- 21:55Batteries go bad.
- 21:56They have bad cells, you know, summer to winter.
- 21:59I don't fault them for that either.
- 22:00It's like, man, you're going to replace the battery.
- 22:02Big deal.
- 22:03What was happening in those three weeks though, was a really big
- 22:07discussion between me and my wife.
- 22:08And it became a three week long.
- 22:10What should I buy?
- 22:11Because we said, and we asked Chrysler.
- 22:14How many more times is this going to happen?
- 22:16When does this become a lemon law problem?
- 22:18When do we get a new one?
- 22:19Or when do you buy it back from us and we get something else?
- 22:22And so we're sort of running those permutations going, if we got to
- 22:26get something else, what do we get?
- 22:27What is there to buy right now?
- 22:29What are our options?
- 22:30Are we screwed?
- 22:31I brought my wife into van life sort of kicking and screaming
- 22:34because she was a wagon girl.
- 22:35Before that, she had a hatchback and kind of this progression of
- 22:38the vehicles are getting larger, but basically the same thing.
- 22:41So now we're at van life.
- 22:42She loves the van.
- 22:43The sliding doors sell it, which is why I make jokes about kids and SUVs.
- 22:47It's like, dude, you don't understand how glorious sliding
- 22:50doors are until you have them.
- 22:51And the cargo space of a van is amazing.
- 22:53You just went through this, Brad.
- 22:55There's three options, right?
- 22:56At least for me, there was only one option.
- 22:59Yes, technically there are three options.
- 23:01There's the Honda Odyssey, which runs a traditional naturally aspirated V6.
- 23:06There's the Kia Carnival, which I don't know the powertrain, but I'm assuming
- 23:11it's a standard naturally aspirated V6.
- 23:13Then there's the Toyota, which in 2021 switched over to a hybrid.
- 23:19For me, we went with the Toyota, one, because of the hybrid, and
- 23:22two, because the backseat design in the Honda didn't leave enough room
- 23:27for us to put the car seats in.
- 23:29And have the seats go all the way back.
- 23:31My wife and I are very tall and we could not put the seats back to our comfortable
- 23:34position and have the car seats in.
- 23:36So we would have been in the same issue that we were in, in the Honda pilot.
- 23:39The backseat is just, it does not have enough room.
- 23:41The Toyota was, we didn't even consider the carnival for you.
- 23:45I think the Toyota is it.
- 23:46You're not going to get 50, but you're going to get over 30, 30, 35 or so.
- 23:51My brother in law with his Honda Odyssey does not get 30.
- 23:53Again, if we had the level two charger, do we wait for the ID buzz?
- 23:57The Volkswagen all electric van, which is bigger than I realized
- 24:01until I saw it at person.
- 24:02So I know my wife likes that.
- 24:04She thinks it's cute.
- 24:05Tanya's seen it in person as well.
- 24:06The inside is very well appointed.
- 24:08And then we're back in the Volkswagen family.
- 24:10I'm scared of that thing because I never want to be the first.
- 24:14One to buy the first new thing.
- 24:17It's sort of like software or a computer.
- 24:19It's like, we'll wait a generation or two until they figure it all out.
- 24:22You always wait for Windows service pack two.
- 24:25The other option that I threw on the table for her, because she's driving my
- 24:29Jeep every day, was what about the 4XE?
- 24:32The hybrid Jeep.
- 24:34I don't know whose hybrid that is.
- 24:36It's because that's a totally different layout.
- 24:38It's longitudinal.
- 24:40It's all wheel drive.
- 24:41It's not that borrowed Ford technology or whatever.
- 24:45Maybe it's Chrysler's own or they developed it alongside of Toyota
- 24:48because Toyota, a lot of people don't realize owns the patents for
- 24:52a lot of this hybrid technology.
- 24:53What they do is then they license it out to other manufacturers.
- 24:57But it's never the most current generation technology.
- 25:01It's always like a couple generations old.
- 25:03So you're getting the old software.
- 25:05You're getting Windows 7 and not Windows 11.
- 25:07You know what I mean?
- 25:07That was another option because those are getting in the 30s from what I understand.
- 25:12And then all wheel drive and all those kinds of things.
- 25:14Now the price tag on the Jeep is hefty.
- 25:16Don't get me wrong.
- 25:17You can get a wagon here.
- 25:18At a hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
- 25:20Yeah.
- 25:21You know, you guys should just get a Hummer.
- 25:23Well, just sell them your Cybertruck thing.
- 25:26Yeah, you guys can have my Cybertruck allotment.
- 25:28Yeah.
- 25:28The problem is I don't think the Cybertruck will fit in my garage.
- 25:31Although I know a Suburban will fit in my garage, but I don't
- 25:33think the Cybertruck will fit.
- 25:34You can't charge it yet.
- 25:35That's true.
- 25:36And I think the Hummer's too wide to fit in my garage.
- 25:40Yeah, but once you pull it in and then you crab walk it
- 25:43around so you can perpendicular.
- 25:45That also brought into question, do we get something older?
- 25:49Do I go look for another diesel Grand Cherokee?
- 25:51Do we go find an older Chevy Nomad, Chevy Nomad, or Jetta
- 25:56station wagon with the TDI?
- 25:57And I go back to diesel because you can still get diesel everywhere.
- 26:01Granted, it's 4 and something a gallon here on the East Coast, but diesels
- 26:05of diesels run for freaking ever.
- 26:07So it's like, okay, whatever.
- 26:09Like, what's the conclusion for that?
- 26:10Did we ever close out the conversation of true cost of ownership or did we just
- 26:15kind of leave that twisting in the wind?
- 26:17We don't know.
- 26:17We really don't.
- 26:19I think we do.
- 26:20It's called expensive.
- 26:23That's what it is.
- 26:25You need a side hustle just to pay for your EV.
- 26:29You know, it's starting to look that way.
- 26:30It really, really is.
- 26:32Just like any car purchase, unless you absolutely need a new car, it's not
- 26:38financially advantageous to change from what you already have unless it doesn't
- 26:43run or it was in an accident and doesn't run or you have disposable income and no
- 26:49bigs if you go change to a 60, 000 car.
- 26:52But if your car If you already have one and the mileage is reasonable, even if it
- 26:56needs whatever service interval major work done to it, it's not going to be 60, 000.
- 27:04And I think where people misconstrued the whole mathematics is replacing the engine
- 27:09is a quarter of the value of the car, you know, the car's 20 years old or whatever.
- 27:14But you don't think about it that way.
- 27:15Think about how much the car is costing you over the long term.
- 27:20And if the car has been trouble free for a really long time, it owes you nothing.
- 27:25It is more than paid for itself.
- 27:26It's paid off.
- 27:27I mean, unless you bought like that lady did, what was it?
- 27:29That.
- 27:29Ford Escort ZX2 and there's somebody else who just bought a
- 27:33Camry and they have like a 72 month loan at 630 a month or something.
- 27:38Poor person.
- 27:38Oh my God.
- 27:39But the point is, the longer you keep your car, if it is relatively trouble free and
- 27:44you keep up with the maintenance that's required and you can do maybe some of it
- 27:48yourself, that car will pay you dividends.
- 27:51Even if the motor transmission blows up, you're like, man, I get another motor
- 27:54for 500 bucks, throw it in there and go another 150, 000 miles, you know,
- 27:58like who cares versus that car note.
- 28:00Yeah.
- 28:00And people also are in a very bad habit.
- 28:03Listen, cars of today are not the cars of the seventies and eighties.
- 28:07That a hundred thousand mile mark is not a death sentence.
- 28:11It's not the nail in the coffin.
- 28:13Oh my God, I've got to get rid of this car.
- 28:14Tanya, how many miles are on your diesel right now?
- 28:17183, 000.
- 28:18I had a diesel that had, when I had it, it had turned over 300, 000 miles.
- 28:23And to this day, I believe the person I sold it to is still driving it up and down
- 28:27the East coast to different track events.
- 28:28And granted, those are two examples of diesels.
- 28:31My station wagon is a VR six.
- 28:33I got 226, 000 miles on it.
- 28:35It still runs.
- 28:36I've got 130, 000 miles on my R.
- 28:38100, 000 miles is not a death sentence.
- 28:40100, 000 miles is usually a turning point for inexpensive maintenance, a timing
- 28:46belt, a timing chain, things like that.
- 28:49But as long as you kept up with the regular maintenance of the
- 28:51vehicle, it's probably been trouble free up to that point.
- 28:54You do that.
- 28:54Do you put.
- 28:55A couple hundred dollars to maybe a couple thousand, depending on the car.
- 28:59And you should get another a hundred, 150, 200, 000 miles out of it.
- 29:02Again, as long as you keep up with the maintenance, just because your vehicle
- 29:05has a hundred thousand miles on it does not mean you need to run out.
- 29:08And as Tanya said, spend 60, 000 on something new, which is close to like
- 29:14the average price of new vehicles, especially these days, shit is expensive.
- 29:18It's wild.
- 29:19What vehicles cost right now.
- 29:20I have never advocated for this in the past, but I can see the value in it
- 29:25today because of the expense of the cars.
- 29:27If you're the type of person that likes having a new car a lot,
- 29:32or you're like, you know what?
- 29:33Do that a hundred thousand miles.
- 29:35I'm not really interested.
- 29:36You know, blah, blah, blah.
- 29:37And keeping it all that kind of stuff, lease the car.
- 29:39And here's why.
- 29:40And again, I would, I don't usually condone this.
- 29:42But it makes sense with these EVs or these spaceships where it's like, you know what?
- 29:47I had it for three years.
- 29:48I had fun.
- 29:48I'm going to get another one for three years and another one for three years.
- 29:51Because if you sort of amortize that because of how expensive they are, you'll
- 29:56pay the 60 grand over 10 years or whatever it is, but you've had three or four cars.
- 30:01In that span of 10 years that have always been kind of fresh and kind of new.
- 30:05And now there's somebody else's problem.
- 30:07Two questions about leasing though.
- 30:08One, if you lease a new EV, do you still get the federal tax credit?
- 30:14I don't think so.
- 30:14Do manufacturers like Tesla even have leasing programs?
- 30:18I don't think Tesla does.
- 30:20I mean, I know Ford and like all the, all the traditional ones.
- 30:23Yeah, but if people are buying Teslas and Rivians, I mean, if they don't have
- 30:26a leasing option, then you're screwed.
- 30:28Yeah, for sure.
- 30:29If you're buying a Tesla or Rivian, you've got money.
- 30:32Maybe.
- 30:33Or you're just in debt up to your eyeballs, like you said before, Brad.
- 30:36So there's a lot of really interesting.
- 30:39Permutations to sit and calculate.
- 30:41Now it used to be really straightforward.
- 30:43You're like, I got 30, 000 to spend.
- 30:45What can I buy for 30 grand?
- 30:47I'm going to go to the, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 30:48But now there's so many different types of cars, power plants, drive trains.
- 30:54What can I buy for 30, 000?
- 30:56Next to nothing, unless you want like a base model Corolla, it's really hard.
- 31:01And that's where, again, I go back to that squishy center of the population,
- 31:05the gooey marshmallow between the graham crackers and the schmores
- 31:08that makes up the middle class.
- 31:10And it's like, this cannot sustain longterm.
- 31:13This is not tenable.
- 31:15Between what we were talking about, upgrading the infrastructure in your
- 31:18house, the power grid, the cost of cars, it's just coming to a head in
- 31:22a really, really interesting way.
- 31:24So to answer your bigger question about where does this leave us
- 31:28with total cost of ownership?
- 31:29I don't have an answer yet, and I'm not at the end of this journey,
- 31:32and I won't be surprised going back to the earlier conversation.
- 31:36If the utility company comes back to me, says, remember what we said, 11.
- 31:39Well, we really met 17 and at that point, I'm checked out.
- 31:43We really meant 111.
- 31:44I'm not calling it a bait and switch or anything like that.
- 31:46It's just the realism of the situation and all the different
- 31:50moving parts that are involved.
- 31:52It's not just, Ooh, I'm going to buy a Tesla today.
- 31:55You know, it's not that simple.
- 31:56Not anymore, but that actually leads us.
- 31:59Into our very first article.
- 32:01And so where I'm going with this whole discussion and Tanya brings this to
- 32:05the table and answer to my question.
- 32:06What do we buy future electric vehicles, EVs that you'll soon be able to buy.
- 32:12So within this year, talking about new cars in 2024, what do we think?
- 32:17Tanya, do you have any thoughts on what Eric should buy for Jess?
- 32:20It's Jess's car.
- 32:21You have thoughts.
- 32:22I know you do.
- 32:22What do you think she should buy?
- 32:23I have no idea.
- 32:25I know what I would buy off of this list, though.
- 32:27The second car on the list?
- 32:28Hell yeah!
- 32:30The Alfa Romeo?
- 32:30The Toyota Sienna?
- 32:31No, it's the Alfa Romeo Giulia EV.
- 32:34Dude, that is just Oh, you're looking at the, uh, no.
- 32:37That's awesome.
- 32:37Come on, I thought Alfa was gone.
- 32:39Now they're teasing us with this?
- 32:41But we're gonna get an Alpha Julia EV, that's gonna be faster than
- 32:45the Quadrifoglio, I guarantee it.
- 32:46Well, until the battery dies.
- 32:48And the upside is, it doesn't look like it came out of the Jetsons.
- 32:52It looks like a regular Julia Q4.
- 32:54Don't Alphas have electronics problems to begin with?
- 32:57And then they're doubling down with the EV.
- 32:59Only in Formula One they have those problems.
- 33:01Shush, shush you.
- 33:02No, no.
- 33:03People can't even get in and out of their driveways because the
- 33:06car bricks itself trying to get in when it goes to a certain angle.
- 33:09People, driveways are a little steep.
- 33:11It is a Stellantis product.
- 33:12It would be like a Range Rover EV.
- 33:14Yeah, well there is a Bentley on this list.
- 33:16The rest of this list is interesting cars that we've actually talked
- 33:19about throughout the year, the BMW 3 Series EV concept, a bunch of other
- 33:23BMWs on here, the Buick Electra, which they teased a while back.
- 33:27The Chevy Bolt.
- 33:28I thought that went away.
- 33:29Or was it the Volt?
- 33:30Dude, that is such a hokey pokey.
- 33:32It's coming back in 2025.
- 33:34Apparently.
- 33:35So Eric would get the second car.
- 33:37Hell yeah.
- 33:38Before I can make an informed decision based on the cars on this list, how
- 33:42close were the girls to Being out of car seats, my youngest is almost out of her
- 33:48booster and my eldest is completely out.
- 33:50And then why not?
- 33:51The A6 e tron dude, that thing is sexy.
- 33:53Yes.
- 33:54The Audi electric cars are whatever.
- 33:58Eric's about to spend 25 million to upgrade his panel.
- 34:03I mean, what's another.
- 34:04Yeah, right.
- 34:04100, 000 for an EV.
- 34:06I love that there's three Fiskars on this list and they can't even
- 34:10fix the ocean, but they're going to introduce three more cars.
- 34:13I'm like, nope, hard pass.
- 34:15I didn't even know Fisker was still a company.
- 34:16But there's a lot of stuff.
- 34:17The Honda Prologue is on here, which we've talked about.
- 34:21The Honda Saloon actually looks like the Wraith.
- 34:23Yeah, it does.
- 34:24And there's the new Ioniq 7 and the Ioniq 9, which we'll talk about
- 34:28a little bit more as we go along.
- 34:30Then there's all the N versions of the 5.
- 34:32Yeah.
- 34:33What about this Lexus EV supercar?
- 34:35That is interesting looking.
- 34:37Why do they always have to throw out rappers and shit when
- 34:40they talk about the Escalade?
- 34:41It's popular with 70 year old white women too.
- 34:44Why not talk about them?
- 34:46There's a lot of Cadillacs on this list talking about the elderly people.
- 34:49Yeah, I do like the Celestique.
- 34:51I think we talked about it because it looks very, very French.
- 34:55It looks very Citroen.
- 34:56I really like the lucid gravity.
- 34:58Did you guys see this thing?
- 34:59Yeah.
- 35:00Looking for it.
- 35:00I didn't know that they were going to make an SUV.
- 35:03This thing looks cool.
- 35:04I like the canoe pickup truck.
- 35:06Yes.
- 35:08That thing is freaking brutal looking.
- 35:10Guess what?
- 35:11There's a Mercedes Benz EQG, and it looks like every other G Wagon they've
- 35:16been making for a hundred years.
- 35:17And I'm okay with that.
- 35:18I'm okay with that.
- 35:21God, these Mini Coopers are huge.
- 35:23By the way, did you guys see the Rivians, the R3 and the R3X?
- 35:27The electric Fiat Panda looking things?
- 35:29Those things look pretty cool.
- 35:30But what's really interesting about this list, then there's like 30 cars on here.
- 35:34The Toyota Tacoma.
- 35:36EV now it looks like a regular taco, like anything else.
- 35:39And they got rid of the grill and all that.
- 35:40But again, we talked about Toyota, not really playing in the pool with
- 35:45everybody else and here they are.
- 35:47Here's another one we didn't know about.
- 35:49And if they're really going to come to the table in 2026 with a taco EV, maybe
- 35:53they are pulling back hard on what they said before they're testing the waters.
- 35:58They're big enough where they can test the waters of vehicles
- 36:00and not go completely all in.
- 36:02Do you never go full Tesla?
- 36:05Look how it worked out for Polestar.
- 36:06Well, before we switch into some Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi news, we
- 36:12have some sad news to report, right Tanya?
- 36:14Earlier this month, we lost a legend in the automotive design
- 36:18industry of Italian fame, Marcello Gandini, who died at the age of 85.
- 36:23He is known, or he is responsible for a few cars you might've heard of.
- 36:28The Lamborghini Diablo, the Lancia Stratos, the Mark I Polo, you
- 36:32know, a couple things like that.
- 36:33He was part of the Bertone company.
- 36:36Yeah, he designed some really ugly cars.
- 36:37I mean, this guy.
- 36:38Really ugly.
- 36:39Yeah.
- 36:41No, all kidding aside, a legend in the automotive design world has left us.
- 36:45And he lived a good long life.
- 36:48He designed some really, really cool cars.
- 36:50And the ones that you mentioned are just a few in his portfolio.
- 36:53Maybe not as epic as Giugiaro.
- 36:55But Gandini will definitely be missed.
- 36:57But I'm really curious to see what comes next though, right?
- 37:01And what comes next is Volkswagen is making a stripped down, beefed up version
- 37:06of the Polo available only for farmers.
- 37:09Not farmers only.
- 37:10Don't be confused.
- 37:11They're just making it for farmers.
- 37:13Oh, this isn't farmer needs a wife.
- 37:15Sorry.
- 37:15No, no, no.
- 37:16Farmer needs a BW Polo.
- 37:17Apparently.
- 37:18Sorry.
- 37:19Haha.
- 37:19Why is this a farm vehicle?
- 37:21I don't get it.
- 37:22The same reason the smart car was turned into a, a vineyard runabout.
- 37:26Yeah, but that makes sense because it's basically a glorified golf
- 37:29cart, but a VW Polo, like really?
- 37:32I mean, I guess they're trying to be like, be a panda.
- 37:35Okay.
- 37:35First of all, it's as big as a Mark 4 GTI was 20 years ago.
- 37:39So it's not a small car.
- 37:40Let me throw some specs at you.
- 37:42One liter.
- 37:43One liter.
- 37:44Normally aspirated three cylinder making 84 horsepower and 75 pound feet
- 37:51of torque with a five speed manual.
- 37:53Well, it doesn't need to be fast.
- 37:55Here's where the article is misleading.
- 37:58Okay.
- 37:59They call it the Polo Robust.
- 38:02That ain't robust.
- 38:03There's nothing robust about this.
- 38:05How much does this thing weigh?
- 38:0773, 000 tons because it's German.
- 38:10Oh my god, I would smoke it.
- 38:12On foot.
- 38:12Would smoke it in my Audi.
- 38:16I'll never forget driving my grandfather's Alto Bianchi YDH, which is the Y10.
- 38:21It was a one liter engine, four cylinder, five speed manual.
- 38:26The whole car weighed like 900 kilos.
- 38:29I mean, it was like a shopping cart with two seats in it, right?
- 38:31Even that if you wanted to pass somebody, it took like a half a mile
- 38:36of preparation and wringing its neck at 9, 000 RPM to get the stupid thing
- 38:41to move to like 60 kilometers an hour.
- 38:43It was insanely slow.
- 38:45So I can't imagine a 3, 200 pound VW Polo with a normally aspirated
- 38:51one liter, not even a diesel petrol.
- 38:54There are probably mark one rabbit diesels that are faster than this.
- 38:59Seems sad.
- 39:00Volkswagen has lost their minds.
- 39:03This should just be a street car, but with more power.
- 39:06With a big turbo, like a Yaris.
- 39:08That's also a three cylinder, but it's got a turbo.
- 39:12Big turbo.
- 39:13Big snail under the hood is what this thing needs.
- 39:15Well, you know what Volkswagen would do though?
- 39:16Nah, they're gonna go, Oh, I know the solution.
- 39:20We'll put a supercharger on it and call it a G40 like they did 20 years
- 39:25ago because they did have that for the Polos and it's going to be pathetic and
- 39:28it'll blow up and nobody will want it.
- 39:30Bad, bad ideas, bad ideas.
- 39:33My reaction to this next article was, well, at least they're not
- 39:36stuck on a carrier ship sinking in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
- 39:40I mean, this is rich people things.
- 39:41Right?
- 39:42He's trying to sell the car carrier with the six Porsches.
- 39:45Headline reads, there's a truck full of Porsches that
- 39:48a dealership just can't sell.
- 39:51This is like, what, two million dollar package to buy this?
- 39:54Each one of these 911s has got to be 300 grand.
- 39:57It's the package.
- 39:58It's the six exclusive Porsches and the truck.
- 40:01He's trying to sell them like a Hot Wheels collection.
- 40:03Yes!
- 40:04It's the car hauler with six 911s!
- 40:07And they're different 911s, although that top row, they look oddly similar.
- 40:11This is some Austrian rich people stuff.
- 40:14The collection includes a 2018 911.
- 40:172 GT3 Club Sport, 2016 911 R, A 2018 911.
- 40:232 GT3 Touring, 2019 Wysock, a 2018 911.
- 40:282 GT3 Cup, and a 2018 991 GT3 R Carbon.
- 40:33Apparently he was going to take them to Goodwood to celebrate
- 40:37Porsche's 70th anniversary.
- 40:38So he's been sitting on these cars for six, seven years.
- 40:42And the truck, let's not forget, which is a man.
- 40:45TGX.
- 40:46Good luck, man.
- 40:47There's no way he's going to sell all these.
- 40:49He's got to break this up.
- 40:50He would make more money breaking it up, given the portions
- 40:53that are in this collection.
- 40:55Who's he going to sell it to?
- 40:56He's only going to sell it to some celebrity who's got millions of
- 40:59dollars or something like that.
- 41:00Or I don't know, some sort of king.
- 41:02The Sultan of Oman or something, you know, whatever.
- 41:04I mean the picture right underneath the little wooden Porsche.
- 41:08It's cute.
- 41:08Hauler with the, the cock, you know, even that is probably out of price range.
- 41:13To me, the cars don't even make sense together.
- 41:16There's no cohesiveness between the colors or theme.
- 41:20Like if they were all white, the truck's white or all black.
- 41:23It seems kind of cool to me, but it just seems like a weird
- 41:26buffet of Porsche goodness.
- 41:29It's literally the Hot Wheels grab bin of whatever 911s were available at that time.
- 41:34That's all.
- 41:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:35And why was he going to take them to Goodwood?
- 41:37Does he work directly for Porsche?
- 41:40No.
- 41:40He's just a dealer.
- 41:41It's time we go to Lower Saxony, talk a little bit about Mercedes.
- 41:46Oh my god, we have Mercedes news.
- 41:48Yes, they still make cars.
- 41:49And every once in a while, they make something that
- 41:52definitely gets my attention.
- 41:53I don't like the back though.
- 41:55What?
- 41:57This is hot.
- 41:58This is the scaled down version of the GT three.
- 42:01It's all good until you get to the back.
- 42:03And then you're like, what are these mom jeans with the 15 feet of like ass cheek?
- 42:09Okay.
- 42:10It's in a terrible color.
- 42:11A lot of people like yellow.
- 42:12That's fine.
- 42:13I'm not a big fan of yellow cars.
- 42:15Imagine it in dark gray or in black.
- 42:17And maybe the color would help, but there's just something about
- 42:20the other AMGs with the haunches.
- 42:24I don't know.
- 42:24It's like this swooping rear and maybe it's the angle and the color.
- 42:30This thing's got hips.
- 42:31You can't see them in this color, I guess.
- 42:33No, you can't, but it's definitely got wide hips.
- 42:36Now, what are we talking about?
- 42:38We are talking about the new 2025 AMG GT 43.
- 42:43And it's real drive.
- 42:45It's like the AMG version of the A class, except the A class is front
- 42:49wheel drive and a turbo four cylinder, two liters, something like that.
- 42:52This is.
- 42:53Still a four banger, rear wheel drive, but it makes 416 horsepower.
- 42:58Still a lot of a two liter.
- 42:59I wonder what it sounds like though.
- 43:01Cause AMGs have that guttural earth shaking.
- 43:04It better sound amazing.
- 43:06It'll sound like half that.
- 43:07It'll sound like that, but it'll be two octaves up.
- 43:09Just better not sound like a Honda with a fart can.
- 43:11I'm not impressed.
- 43:12What?
- 43:12Ah, I guess maybe I'm a fan of the 928.
- 43:15So I like stuff like this.
- 43:16The 928?
- 43:19What did the 928 have?
- 43:20The V8.
- 43:21Ding, ding, ding.
- 43:22You lost me.
- 43:23I'm okay with turbo fours.
- 43:25Not for a hundred grand.
- 43:26There it is.
- 43:27There's the problem with this.
- 43:29I would pay 45 to 50 grand for this car.
- 43:31There you go.
- 43:32Thank you.
- 43:32I'm not paying a hundred thousand dollars for this fucking thing.
- 43:34Yes, the price is the problem.
- 43:36A hundred thousand dollars for a four cylinder AMG when you could
- 43:39go buy a turbo civic for 45.
- 43:42That's a hard conversation.
- 43:43This is, this is in a completely different league than a civic.
- 43:47Oh, let's not get it twisted, but still something just irks me about
- 43:52paying 100, 000 plus for a two liter instead of the Honda civic, you could
- 43:59get a Volkswagen, which I think would be in a closer league luxury wise.
- 44:02You get a Golf R with similar to more horsepower and you put.
- 44:06500 into it or 1, 000 to a chip.
- 44:091, 100.
- 44:10Yeah.
- 44:101, 100.
- 44:11And then you're making 600.
- 44:13How, how much torque did Bruce get out of his car?
- 44:15It was 460 some odd torque.
- 44:18Yeah.
- 44:18And that, that wasn't even an R.
- 44:19So like you said, you love V8s and for a hundred thousand dollars,
- 44:23Tanya, what else could Brad get?
- 44:25Mustang.
- 44:26You could get the Jeep Wrangler V8 final edition.
- 44:32For only 101, 890.
- 44:34Finally.
- 44:35Atlantis money.
- 44:36Woo!
- 44:37It does come with a 392, 470 horsepower, 6.
- 44:404 liter V8 engine.
- 44:42Standard.
- 44:43Zero to 60 in a Wrangler in four seconds, brah.
- 44:46But it gets 13 miles to the gallon.
- 44:48I mean, who cares about gas mileage these days?
- 44:50If you had 100, 000, which would you buy?
- 44:54Oh, I'd buy the Benz.
- 44:55If I had 100, 000, I'd buy a used 911.
- 44:58Or an Audi R8 or like a Nissan GTR or something like that.
- 45:01I mean, he has a point.
- 45:02No, actually, I would buy a CLK AMG Black Series.
- 45:06But you'd have the coolest sort of Hellcat Jeep Wrangler to take to the mall.
- 45:11Or I would have the coolest blacked out Mercedes to take to the mall.
- 45:16100, 000 and you can get you the correct Mercedes.
- 45:19100, 000 get you a four cylinder Mercedes.
- 45:24How fucked up is that?
- 45:26Well, let's Let's continue our domestic news brought to us by AmericanMuscle.
- 45:32com, your source for OEM performance and replacement parts for your
- 45:35Ford, Chevy, or Stellantis vehicle.
- 45:38So going back to our Chevy Bolt B.
- 45:42Is that the Colt?
- 45:43Oh, they need to bring that back.
- 45:44Or Colt.
- 45:47Colt?
- 45:47Or Colt?
- 45:47The Colt is the square body, people, but that's another episode to itself.
- 45:52And then the Colt is a Tesla thing.
- 45:54We'll So this guy who purchased his new back then 2018 Chevy Bolt Ev
- 46:02has now amassed 240,000 miles Wow.
- 46:08On that little grocery gutter.
- 46:09And the only thing he's done, he says, is the battery was replaced under a safety
- 46:14recall at 150,000, but no other problems.
- 46:18Besides, like, brake maintenance.
- 46:20That's impressive!
- 46:21Good job, Chevy!
- 46:23I mean, you got a ways to go with your diesel, apparently.
- 46:26Well, I gotta say this, and the Green Grand Prix is coming up again this year,
- 46:31and plan on being there, live streaming and doing some other stuff, but I was
- 46:35really impressed by the Chevy Bolts.
- 46:37Regardless of stock or modified like they had at the Green Grand Prix, especially
- 46:42during the autocross, if you go back and look at the live stream that we did,
- 46:45they were quick and they handled well.
- 46:47And everybody kept saying like how fun they were to drive.
- 46:49And I'm like, Chevy Volt, are you, are we talking about the same car?
- 46:53And these guys, man, they were hooning it up with these Chevy Volts and they
- 46:56were loving them and they couldn't say enough good things about them.
- 46:58And I'm like, man, like, what am I missing here?
- 47:01Absolutely nothing.
- 47:02They're trying to convince themselves that they have a good car.
- 47:05I mean, it's not a Prius, right?
- 47:06I mean that you know what you're getting there, which I have
- 47:09seen a Prius at a track event.
- 47:11I have two.
- 47:11They're not allowed anymore, though, from what I understand.
- 47:14Certain tracks, at least.
- 47:15According to a track test by Jeremy Clarkson, a BMW E46 M3 is more fuel
- 47:20efficient than a Prius to get the same track time at the same speed too.
- 47:24Speaking of that tangent, I don't blame them for banning the EVs.
- 47:29at track day events.
- 47:30Because you have one catch on fire, and then 1900 years later, when they put it
- 47:35out, everyone's track day has been ruined.
- 47:38And what damage does it do to the asphalt, the surface, you know, wherever
- 47:41it's parked, when that thing melts down and just goes full scorched earth?
- 47:45Well, This next one, I am still scratching my head.
- 47:49This was, I think, a concept a couple years ago, but it's like back,
- 47:53they're still doing something with it.
- 47:55What is this Buick?
- 47:57It looks like something from that show Viper.
- 48:00Yes, which I love.
- 48:01Was this generated by like Mid Journey or one of the other AI programs?
- 48:06Because it's almost Forza quality supercar that we're looking at here.
- 48:10And I don't associate Buick.
- 48:12With something like this and especially the name that they chose
- 48:16the wildcat, which as we know, Tanya, our cousin's dad had a wildcat and
- 48:22that thing was 11 million feet long.
- 48:25It was like the biggest car to this day that I've ever seen.
- 48:28I mean, it was literal land yacht.
- 48:31So to call this the wildcat, I'm going to get it because it's like
- 48:33a fun name and it's aggressive.
- 48:35If I think about the original one, I'm not the red car.
- 48:38Yes.
- 48:38Oh my god, I didn't know that.
- 48:40Okay.
- 48:40Yeah, it's a Buick Wildcat 2 door.
- 48:41Am I the only person in the world right now that is surprised
- 48:47that Buick still exists?
- 48:48Not your grandparents car company anymore.
- 48:51They say it's because of the Chinese market.
- 48:53They really, really like Buicks for some reason.
- 48:56I don't get it.
- 48:57American weirdos.
- 48:58Yeah, right?
- 48:59I'm just, I don't understand it.
- 49:00But, I saw another Buick the other day and I don't remember the name of it.
- 49:05And I thought it was a Polestar.
- 49:07It had the same sort of shape and same sort of look to it.
- 49:09And Buick has also revamped their logo.
- 49:12So it just has those three like downward facing pennants instead
- 49:16of the ring and all this stuff.
- 49:17And they silently changed that like the Camaro logo now.
- 49:21Yeah, exactly.
- 49:22And so we actually kind of were buzzing through traffic to see this
- 49:25car because I was like, what is this?
- 49:27And I'm asking my wife and she's like, I don't know.
- 49:29I don't know.
- 49:29And we finally got close enough to it and we're like, Oh my god, that's a Buick?
- 49:34I feel like Buick is silently changing their cars over.
- 49:38Maybe they'll make something that we're more excited about, or because
- 49:41we're getting older, they're building stuff that appeals to us as old people.
- 49:47So when do we see a new Grand National?
- 49:51Right?
- 49:52Let's switch to Asian domestic news and talk a little bit about Kia and
- 49:57Hyundai and some other manufacturers here that we alluded to earlier.
- 50:00What's going on in Korea, Tanya?
- 50:03So apparently Kia is winning in the affordable mass market EV category.
- 50:09Duh, they're winning in the affordable ICE category too.
- 50:12Yeah, I don't know what they're comparing to.
- 50:15They only mentioned the Kia EV3, so I don't know what they're saying.
- 50:19Second one is, which is weird though because I guess they're comparing
- 50:23it to EVs that don't even exist yet because the R3 aren't even out yet.
- 50:27So cool.
- 50:28You're winning in a category that you're only in.
- 50:32Like Toyota Lama.
- 50:34The important part about this article has nothing to do with Kia.
- 50:39It's zooming in laser focused, hypersensitive.
- 50:43On what?
- 50:44To the Rivian R3X.
- 50:47Tell me that's not a Lancia Delta or a Golf GTI Mark II silhouette.
- 50:53Some people think it looks like an AMC Gremlin.
- 50:56If you're listening, you need your eyes checked.
- 50:58It looks like anything designed by Giugiaro from back then.
- 51:02The Golf.
- 51:02The Panda.
- 51:03Just the way the back door is cut, the back glass, the B pillar.
- 51:07If you take the Mark II Rally Golf Oh, it's a carbon copy.
- 51:12Just put a roof rack on this thing.
- 51:14It is so cool.
- 51:15Like, this is the coolest new EV I've seen in a while.
- 51:18Like, if this is gonna be for real, and I like the little hippo nostrils front
- 51:23end that the Rivian has, that's neat.
- 51:25The problem is that's never gonna come here.
- 51:27That's going to be for the European market because that appeals to all the launch a
- 51:31Delta lovers and the Volkswagen people and the Renault Clio folks out in the world.
- 51:35But man, that's what I'm excited about.
- 51:38Well, they're saying 2027.
- 51:40How absurd is it that they're winning the most affordable EV 54
- 51:46nine base price for an EV nine.
- 51:49The EV9's big though.
- 51:50That's a sedan.
- 51:51But the EV9 was their big SUV.
- 51:53Oh, is it the SUV?
- 51:54What's the cheapest electric, like all electric vehicle out right now?
- 51:57The Chevy Bolt.
- 51:58It's like twenties, I think.
- 52:00Twenties?
- 52:01Well, I don't know what the new one will be because they
- 52:04stopped making it, I thought.
- 52:06Nope, it's back.
- 52:06You can pick up the used ones.
- 52:08You can pick them up with real low mileage for in the twenties.
- 52:11Yeah, but that's.
- 52:12But I think even new, they weren't anything over.
- 52:15I don't think 30.
- 52:16The Volt is a plug in hybrid.
- 52:17No, no, but the Bolt, the B.
- 52:19Oh, Bolt.
- 52:20You're saying Bolt.
- 52:21Oh, the one that's the size of an Air Force One Nike.
- 52:23Yeah, your left shoe.
- 52:25Okay.
- 52:26Okay.
- 52:26So that's more reasonable, but just, I'm just flabbergasted
- 52:30by the cost of brand new cars.
- 52:32You can get a 2023 Chevy Bolt EV.
- 52:34I think they stopped.
- 52:35So I don't think there's a 2024.
- 52:37No, there isn't.
- 52:3826 5.
- 52:39Why aren't they on this list for winning?
- 52:42Because they have the most affordable.
- 52:43It probably has to do with number that are being sold too.
- 52:46Which doesn't make sense because I don't know why they're listing
- 52:49the EV9 because the R3, the Rivian, allegedly is going to be 35, 000.
- 52:55That's a good deal!
- 52:56Oh, like the Tesla Model 3.
- 52:58Allegedly.
- 52:58So we'll see what actually happens.
- 53:00This R3X is cool.
- 53:02I'm sorry, this is so cool.
- 53:04It is.
- 53:05We have another article in the show notes that has more pictures of it.
- 53:08This thing is cool.
- 53:09The interior is cool.
- 53:10Everything about this is cool.
- 53:12Got a nice silhouette.
- 53:13Yeah, it really does.
- 53:14Well, continuing to talk about the Koreans.
- 53:17We talked about the EB 9 being the biggest one in the fleet.
- 53:19As we know, Hyundai is the parent company of Kia and also of
- 53:23Genesis and a lot of other brands.
- 53:25It's not a stretch of the imagination to say that just like Audis and Volkswagens
- 53:30are based on one another, there's Hyundais and Kias that are based on one another.
- 53:33So Hyundai is rolling out the IONIQ 9.
- 53:36It's big, it's bold, and it's green, but I don't like it.
- 53:40Uh, it doesn't have a nice profile.
- 53:42Not at all.
- 53:45It's very square, unless you're looking at the windshield.
- 53:49The windshield is at like a 60 degree angle, and then the rest of
- 53:53it looks very square but roundish.
- 53:55Square but round.
- 53:57Tell me I'm wrong.
- 53:58It's very rectangular.
- 53:59It's rectangular round.
- 54:01And I will submit Exhibit A, the fenders.
- 54:03Oh yeah.
- 54:04Look at these fenders.
- 54:05They're round and then just cut straight.
- 54:08know what that is.
- 54:09That's, I don't like it.
- 54:10The front end too.
- 54:11The front end is very perpendicular to the ground and then like slight
- 54:15curve and then parallel to the ground.
- 54:17You put a level on it, it's going to be level.
- 54:18Why do the fenders of the Ioniq 9 and 7 have LEDs in them?
- 54:23What is the purpose?
- 54:24Federal mandate.
- 54:25Look hella cool.
- 54:26The same reason the Ferrari 360s have to have those stupid side markers in the U.
- 54:31S.
- 54:31Yeah, I was gonna say, it's no different than a side marker that
- 54:33just moved it 8 inches forward.
- 54:35Why is it so fugly though?
- 54:37Well Because it's Hyundai.
- 54:38You know?
- 54:39I don't see this selling well.
- 54:40And there's no pictures of the back, which means it must be absolutely heinous.
- 54:46If you're not willing to show it from the back It must be really really bad
- 54:50and just looking at that d pillar and that weird glass They've got all this.
- 54:55Yeah.
- 54:55I mean the pencil broke when they got to the back of the car There's
- 54:58just no way this thing looks good.
- 55:00You know, speaking of kids.
- 55:01I saw an ionic 6 I saw it on the road sob.
- 55:05Yeah, I saw one and was Kevin Bacon driving it It was coming at me.
- 55:09So I really only saw it from the front And then as it passed
- 55:12me, I recognized it immediately.
- 55:13I was like, Mmm, that's that Saab ish thing.
- 55:18Ev, like Ev.
- 55:19So dumb.
- 55:20Stupid commercials.
- 55:21Well, speaking of cars you thought were dead.
- 55:23I thought the GTR was gone.
- 55:25They still make it?
- 55:26Because of the Gran Turismo movie.
- 55:28We gotta bring it back.
- 55:28I thought it went away.
- 55:30But apparently you can get a 2025 one, or at least in Japan you can.
- 55:33It says here, this could be the end of the line for the 17 year old Godzilla.
- 55:38I thought it already was!
- 55:40I've only seen one, maybe two, in the last 17 years in the real world.
- 55:47Did anyone buy these?
- 55:49I've seen a handful of track days and it's never the same person twice.
- 55:53I feel like they take them to the track one time and then that's it.
- 55:56They put them away in storage or something.
- 55:57And they're big cars.
- 55:58I mean, they're huge.
- 55:59They're rolling arcades.
- 56:01They basically drive themselves.
- 56:02But did it come out in 2007?
- 56:04That feels like a long time ago.
- 56:06I don't know.
- 56:07I guess.
- 56:08Here's another car that's 100, 000.
- 56:11Do you buy a GTR?
- 56:12Or do you buy the Mercedes?
- 56:14I buy the GTR.
- 56:14What?
- 56:15I buy the Mercedes.
- 56:16I buy a Nissan Z at this point because I say 50 grand beats you all out.
- 56:20No, I still buy a used 911 or a Dodge Viper.
- 56:23Overrated.
- 56:24Okay, now you have my attention.
- 56:25Again, I didn't know the GTR was still being made.
- 56:28So, okay.
- 56:29Good job, Nissan.
- 56:30Your marketing department wins again.
- 56:33If you've seen three GTRs, that's three more than the Nissan 400s.
- 56:38I have seen zero on the road.
- 56:40Like, they do not exist.
- 56:42Oh yeah, I haven't seen any of those.
- 56:44I thought I saw one the other day, I remember, but it wasn't.
- 56:47So this next one, as we talk about random EVs and concepts,
- 56:51this is an all Mon Dieu moment.
- 56:53This is one of those, don't tease me, because I want this so bad.
- 56:58You want that baguette holder?
- 56:59Well, yeah, they're stale, aren't they?
- 57:01But this is so cool.
- 57:03What about the Renault R5?
- 57:05So I saw the Alpine version of this when I was at Le Mans last
- 57:10year, and it is just the hotness.
- 57:13It is sick.
- 57:14This is cool.
- 57:15I can't wait for the R5 to come back.
- 57:17Having driven an original R5 Turbo II, this speaks to me.
- 57:21Is it as cool as like the Peugeot 208 and 308s and some
- 57:25of the new ones that are out?
- 57:26I like those better from a modern aesthetic perspective of a hatchback.
- 57:31But this being a retro car and being an EV, man, it checks all the boxes.
- 57:36And how much is it going to cost?
- 57:38I don't care.
- 57:39It's never coming to the United States.
- 57:41So it all doesn't matter.
- 57:42It'll be a dollar nine.
- 57:44When I buy the hot wheels version at Walmart, that's
- 57:46how much it's going to cost.
- 57:47True.
- 57:48That's what's going to happen there.
- 57:49What else we got going on?
- 57:50Brad is looking for that low cost EV and you might find it in a domestic.
- 57:57I see Ford is said to be planning on a $25,000 compact EV for 2026.
- 58:05BBBB.
- 58:06Did you read the fine print European market?
- 58:13There you have it.
- 58:14Nothing good comes here.
- 58:16Nope.
- 58:16And it's going to use the new lithium iron phosphate battery, blah,
- 58:19blah, blah, all this kind of stuff.
- 58:20And that's great.
- 58:21But here's the problem I have with it.
- 58:22They're going to take it to Europe, and they're going to call it the Explorer.
- 58:25That's not an Explorer.
- 58:27Oh, no.
- 58:27We already have an Explorer here that is.
- 58:29EV or will be EV was listed in the upcoming.
- 58:33We need to come up with a new name for this.
- 58:35This it's not going to be sold as an explored.
- 58:37Okay.
- 58:38Let's do it.
- 58:38Let's, let's come up with a new name.
- 58:40I only see the one picture.
- 58:41What do we think it should be called?
- 58:42If the pickup truck is maverick, I think this should be goose.
- 58:45Why not?
- 58:45Mustang something.
- 58:49The Mustang mock D's
- 58:54mark D's.
- 58:55Something along the lines of the car.
- 58:57No, this is too big.
- 58:58A Mustang is a wild horse.
- 59:00What is a wild mini horse?
- 59:03It's the Pinto.
- 59:04Oh, we figured it out.
- 59:07It's the Pinto.
- 59:08The Mustang Mach E too.
- 59:10And just like the Pinto, if you hit this thing hard enough in the back, it's
- 59:14going to explode and melt to the ground.
- 59:16So it's perfect.
- 59:17Done.
- 59:17We figured it out.
- 59:18Ford, we've solved your marketing problem at this.
- 59:20See, that's what we're here to do.
- 59:21Solve problems.
- 59:22We mentioned Polestar earlier as new EVs coming in this year or next year.
- 59:28However, Volvo has lowered its stake in Polestar, relinquishing more of the
- 59:34control to the parent company Geely or Geely, however that's pronounced.
- 59:39She reminds me of that movie.
- 59:41With Ben Affleck and what's her face?
- 59:43And Jennifer Lopez.
- 59:45Was that called Geely?
- 59:47It's called Geely.
- 59:48It's called Giggly.
- 59:50At any rate, they're relinquishing part of their stakes, or they're
- 59:53not completely going to zero.
- 59:55They're around 18%.
- 59:57So what does this mean for Polestar?
- 59:59Who knows?
- 59:59Means they're still going to have cars that look like Volvos.
- 1:00:02I know.
- 1:00:03Anticlimactic.
- 1:00:04Time will tell, I guess.
- 1:00:05It's not apparently impacting their plans for the upcoming three and four
- 1:00:10crossovers, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:00:12So we'll see what is in store in the future for Polestar.
- 1:00:16Alright Brad, it's time for your favorite section of the drive thru, it's time
- 1:00:20for Lost and Found, where you scour the internet looking for the newest
- 1:00:24old car available on dealership lots.
- 1:00:26Well, I already told you about the Tesla Cybertruck Founders
- 1:00:30Edition that was on Cars and Bids.
- 1:00:34I think the current bid was 150, uh, let's see here.
- 1:00:38God, I feel so sorry for the person who owns this 2005 Ford GT, the yellow and
- 1:00:43black one, because it is still for sale.
- 1:00:46450, 000 estimated payment, 7, 365 a month.
- 1:00:51Wow.
- 1:00:53Still cheaper than an EV.
- 1:00:54Taxes, tags, title included.
- 1:00:56Woo!
- 1:00:57Yep.
- 1:00:57That's all.
- 1:00:58There's nothing really exciting out here.
- 1:00:59Nothing fun.
- 1:01:00Are you kidding me?
- 1:01:01I found the newest old car for sale.
- 1:01:04You want to know who the previous owner was?
- 1:01:06Eric.
- 1:01:06Nah.
- 1:01:06The former design boss at Stellantis.
- 1:01:10He sold his 1992 Lancia Delta Integrale HF in Tornado Red.
- 1:01:16This thing is The sickness.
- 1:01:18Yeah.
- 1:01:19It was on bring a trailer.
- 1:01:21There you go.
- 1:01:21It's an Evo one and not an Evo two.
- 1:01:24And guess what?
- 1:01:24It's sold for 93, 000.
- 1:01:27So going back to our question before, if you have a hundred
- 1:01:29grand to spend, what do you buy?
- 1:01:30You buy this?
- 1:01:30No, no, no.
- 1:01:32How can you not love an Italian hot hatchback?
- 1:01:35That is twin charge, supercharged and turbocharged make it 300
- 1:01:39horsepower plus all wheel drive.
- 1:01:41I mean, I like it.
- 1:01:42I don't a hundred thousand dollars like it.
- 1:01:44I hear they steer like a bus.
- 1:01:45You're not selling me on it.
- 1:01:48Well, I mean, it's 1980s technology wrapped in a 1990s shell.
- 1:01:54So, you know, you get what you get and you don't get upset.
- 1:01:57I'm not going to kick it out of the garage.
- 1:01:58I would take this car hands down.
- 1:02:00Not for a hundred thousand dollars.
- 1:02:01Tonya, would you spend a hundred thousand dollars on this car?
- 1:02:04She's got to think about it, Brad.
- 1:02:05Look at that face.
- 1:02:06For 93, 000, she's just trying to find the article.
- 1:02:09No, a hundred thousand on this or the Mercedes.
- 1:02:13Yeah.
- 1:02:13What do you buy?
- 1:02:14That's a good question.
- 1:02:15Mercedes has air conditioning.
- 1:02:17This probably has a rat blowing over an ice cube.
- 1:02:21Mercedes has AC, but this car has more windows.
- 1:02:23What makes this car 93, 000?
- 1:02:25It's a Lancia Delta Integrale HF Evo one.
- 1:02:29That's it.
- 1:02:29Should it really be?
- 1:02:30Thank you.
- 1:02:31Thank you, Tanya.
- 1:02:32Thank you.
- 1:02:32It's wrong with you people.
- 1:02:34This is an icon.
- 1:02:35I know this is like a fashion statement.
- 1:02:39Is it $93,000 though?
- 1:02:41It was like $93,000 when it was new in 1990 $2 when you converted.
- 1:02:46So it's a, it's a bargain.
- 1:02:48This is hard decision.
- 1:02:49No, it's not.
- 1:02:50It is a simple decision.
- 1:02:51You take the Shield and the Lance and you put your 93, 000 in the bank.
- 1:02:57Well, there's that.
- 1:02:58So there is a car we haven't talked about yet.
- 1:03:00What's that?
- 1:03:01Do you spend 100, 000 on the Lancia Delta Integrale or do you spend
- 1:03:05100, 000 on a 1985 Porsche 940?
- 1:03:09Oh my God.
- 1:03:10I can't believe it.
- 1:03:11All day, all night.
- 1:03:13I'm in agreement with Tanya.
- 1:03:14This is where auctions get out of control.
- 1:03:17I could not believe this.
- 1:03:18Is this even a turbo?
- 1:03:19No, it's a regular 944.
- 1:03:22F that noise.
- 1:03:23Piece of crap.
- 1:03:24No, I love 944s.
- 1:03:26The base model ones are probably the most boring car I've ever driven, and
- 1:03:30I mean that in the most positive way.
- 1:03:32They don't do anything you don't expect.
- 1:03:35They're not nervous.
- 1:03:36They're very calm.
- 1:03:38They're subdued low gear ratios.
- 1:03:40Like it's just an Autobahn cruiser, but on the same token, just like my
- 1:03:45M3 was, it doesn't excite me, right?
- 1:03:48944s have never gotten me excited.
- 1:03:49Even the turbos.
- 1:03:50You're like, Ooh, that was fun.
- 1:03:52Great.
- 1:03:52This is again, where auctions get out of control.
- 1:03:55100, 000 for a base model 85 944?
- 1:04:00Okay, it's got Fuchs on it.
- 1:04:01Whoop dee doo, so does every other 944 on the planet.
- 1:04:05I don't see it.
- 1:04:06I think they messed up.
- 1:04:07This is a 15, 000 car.
- 1:04:09I could see maybe paying 10, 500.
- 1:04:11There's a typo here.
- 1:04:12There's no way this sold for 100, 000 bucks.
- 1:04:15I mean, the car better have, like, 12 miles on it, but at that point,
- 1:04:18you're gonna have to rebuild it.
- 1:04:19Anyway, it's going to need a head gasket as soon as you look at it.
- 1:04:22No, thank you.
- 1:04:23You know, talking about Daniel and square bodies and stuff.
- 1:04:25I saw a square body with the camper attachment thing.
- 1:04:29You've seen those back in the 80s.
- 1:04:30They would put that like literal physical box in the bed with like a door.
- 1:04:34Like, I don't even know what you call that, right?
- 1:04:36It just looks like a bio dome that you carry around with
- 1:04:38you in the bed of the truck.
- 1:04:39They had 1 of those sell at me come.
- 1:04:41For like a hundred thousand dollars.
- 1:04:43It was absolutely bonkers.
- 1:04:44I'm like, where are people coming up with the money for this stuff?
- 1:04:48And that's where I say, if you spend a hundred thousand dollars on an 85,
- 1:04:51nine 44, I will go down to the Mercedes dealership tomorrow and go buy that GT
- 1:04:5743, because it doesn't make any sense.
- 1:04:59944, they literally made hundreds of thousands of these cars.
- 1:05:03It's the car that saved Porsche from going bankrupt in the 80s.
- 1:05:07It's a mass market car.
- 1:05:09And you want to tell me it's a collector item at 100, 000 now?
- 1:05:13No freaking way.
- 1:05:15If you're gonna spend 100, 000 on a 944, it better be Cup car?
- 1:05:19Yes, cup car.
- 1:05:21It better be an S2 Cabriolet, like the last year, like a 92 and a half, with
- 1:05:27all the options, and the blue leather, and like all that crazy stuff that
- 1:05:31you could get, the pearl paint, and you know, they only made like three
- 1:05:35of them kind of deal, but a Guards Red, Black Leather, Black Fuchs, 944,
- 1:05:40this is like the most basic vanilla latte Starbucks Porsche on the planet.
- 1:05:45Come on, 100, 000.
- 1:05:48Get the f out of here.
- 1:05:50Take your 944 and go home.
- 1:05:52Well, we've reached that part of the episode where we would be remiss.
- 1:05:57We didn't talk about Teslagate.
- 1:06:03Was that the Law and Order music?
- 1:06:04What kind of shenanigans is Elon up to this time?
- 1:06:11Not much, just a quick check in with Hertz and their, their mis investment.
- 1:06:18I love that the most exciting thing we have to talk about
- 1:06:20with Tesla's rental cars.
- 1:06:22This is amazing.
- 1:06:24So we recall a couple years ago, they hedged a big bet.
- 1:06:28Went all in buying 100, 000 Teslas into the Hertz rental fleet, high
- 1:06:32expectations on this, and now that CEO has resigned from Hertz after he grenaded
- 1:06:38the company into a hole and the new CEO has to dig themselves out of this huge
- 1:06:43investment to divest all of these Teslas.
- 1:06:47Wow.
- 1:06:47They took a bath on these things.
- 1:06:49So if anybody's looking to buy a used Tesla, no, that guy's looking for a job.
- 1:06:53That's what he's looking for.
- 1:06:54If you want to hire a CEO that will ruin your company, check the Hertz website.
- 1:06:59That's the guy.
- 1:07:00And they bought high and they're having to sell not as high.
- 1:07:03Cause there's been a number of price reductions on Tesla's over the years.
- 1:07:09Claim high repair costs.
- 1:07:12Like, well, what does that mean?
- 1:07:15The maintenance shouldn't be Depends, though, because people rag on rental cars.
- 1:07:19So if they're bashing them into things, and suddenly you have all these EVs
- 1:07:23that have been in mild accidents, and then they have to get checked out,
- 1:07:26maybe brought back to service dealers to make sure everything's All good.
- 1:07:29God forbid you rent it out and lights on fire or something because
- 1:07:33there's a problem with the batteries.
- 1:07:34Wonder what the rental insurance liability is for the EVs.
- 1:07:38I couldn't have been cheap.
- 1:07:40Do you have to take out extra fire insurance?
- 1:07:42I don't know because I'm sure the rental was really expensive per day on these.
- 1:07:47So it's like who are you expecting was going to go Buy these.
- 1:07:50Most people are trying to find the cheapest rental car they can.
- 1:07:54Eric, you got to add that into your total cost of ownership.
- 1:07:57Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:07:58Does your homeowner's insurance go up because of the risk of fire if
- 1:08:02you're parking an EV in your garage?
- 1:08:03That's true.
- 1:08:04It has, Matt.
- 1:08:04Well, I wonder if they ask those kind of questions now when you're filling
- 1:08:08out your home insurance, right?
- 1:08:09I mean, Chrysler tells you not to park your EV in the garage to begin with.
- 1:08:12Just leave it outside.
- 1:08:13What is the point of the house I bought for my car to not put the
- 1:08:17car Is that what the garage is for?
- 1:08:19Oh, you bought your car a house.
- 1:08:21Yes, the garage is the house for the car.
- 1:08:24No, the garage is for all your crap that doesn't fit in your house.
- 1:08:29No, it's for the car.
- 1:08:30All right, well, enough of that.
- 1:08:32Now, the more interesting thing.
- 1:08:33So, Motor Trends has done a comparison test.
- 1:08:36Before you read the answer, between the Cybertruck, the Rivian R1T,
- 1:08:42and the F 150 Lightning, which truck do you think came out on top?
- 1:08:46And, of course, they looked at the real world mileage.
- 1:08:50They looked at off road capability, acceleration.
- 1:08:53They did some like figure eight tests.
- 1:08:55How many Porsches were they towing in this exercise?
- 1:08:58They towed some 3, 200 almost pound camper trailer.
- 1:09:03All right.
- 1:09:03The real question is who comes in second.
- 1:09:05Okay.
- 1:09:06Because we already know who comes in first.
- 1:09:07No.
- 1:09:08Who do you think comes in first?
- 1:09:09Go bottom up.
- 1:09:10Who's number three?
- 1:09:11I think the Lightning is at the bottom.
- 1:09:13Ooh, I was going to put the Lightning at the top.
- 1:09:15No, we already know the Lightning's second.
- 1:09:17It sucks at towing.
- 1:09:18Like we've seen those real life tests with the guys with the
- 1:09:21tampers and all that stuff.
- 1:09:23I think that's at the bottom.
- 1:09:24We haven't seen a real life test with the Cybertruck of the Rivian.
- 1:09:27No, it's towed a 9 11.
- 1:09:29That's all we needed to know.
- 1:09:30It beat a 9 11 towing a 9 11.
- 1:09:33You can tow a 9 11 down a quarter mile, not 300 miles down the interstate.
- 1:09:37How far is your home depot from your house?
- 1:09:39About 4.
- 1:09:395 miles.
- 1:09:40There you go.
- 1:09:41That's as far as you need to go.
- 1:09:42That's it.
- 1:09:43But then can you shovel mulch over the side?
- 1:09:45You laugh.
- 1:09:46But in the cargo carrying category, they commented that the Cybertruck, you
- 1:09:50can't easily shovel mulch out over the side rails as you can in other trucks.
- 1:09:55Boom.
- 1:09:56Mulch.
- 1:09:56I've never seen anybody shovel mulch out of their truck.
- 1:09:59Is that a thing?
- 1:10:00Like all these guys with their pristine bed liners.
- 1:10:02I'm like, you buy bag mulch.
- 1:10:05Come on.
- 1:10:05I don't think they actually put mulch in these.
- 1:10:07I think it's just a funny way of saying like the way that
- 1:10:10the bed sides are angled.
- 1:10:12It's not really great for getting stuff out.
- 1:10:14Anyway, so you think number three is lightning.
- 1:10:16So who do we think is number two?
- 1:10:18I don't want it to be the Rivian.
- 1:10:20Is this one of those like, it's slanted in favor of the Cybertruck because
- 1:10:23everybody's given it so much grief?
- 1:10:26Who do you think is number two?
- 1:10:27I'm gonna roll hard.
- 1:10:28I'm gonna take a chance.
- 1:10:29And say the Rivian beat the Tesla.
- 1:10:32I have to abstain from voting because I saw the result.
- 1:10:36Oh, dang.
- 1:10:37All right.
- 1:10:38So what, what happened?
- 1:10:39The Rivian is number one in this comparison, followed by the Cybertruck
- 1:10:43and then followed by the F 150 Lightning.
- 1:10:47Logic prevails.
- 1:10:52Yes.
- 1:10:52So.
- 1:10:53So what I learned from this, just from this opening picture, because I
- 1:10:56didn't scroll any further than that.
- 1:10:57I didn't realize the headlights are in that gap, which I assume is a panel gap
- 1:11:03between the front nose and whatever that thing they call a bumper is at the bottom.
- 1:11:07Like, so that streak of light across the front of that,
- 1:11:10that's a daytime running light.
- 1:11:12Exactly.
- 1:11:13I thought that was the headlights.
- 1:11:15Oh my God.
- 1:11:16That makes the truck.
- 1:11:17Even stupider so ugly and then now that I'm scrolling down.
- 1:11:21This is the first time I've gotten a very clear Picture of the wiper blade.
- 1:11:27Oh, so speaking of the wiper blade.
- 1:11:29What does that wipe your ass?
- 1:11:32I thought it, Brad said it.
- 1:11:34How does this work?
- 1:11:35Here you go.
- 1:11:36So a new driver venturing into a big puddle will learn that with the wheels
- 1:11:40and windshield so far, so commenting on Tesla, Tesla presents a curve.
- 1:11:43That's so steep.
- 1:11:44We worry about Turo renters who may not get much familiarization.
- 1:11:47So stepping into a cyber truck versus something more normal, a new
- 1:11:51driver venturing into a big puddle will learn that with the wheels
- 1:11:53and windshield so far forward, visibility can be completely obscured.
- 1:11:57By the splash of potentially muddy water.
- 1:11:59A terrible time to learn the two step process for activating the Giga Wiper.
- 1:12:05Thumb the tiny button on the steering wheel with the windshield washer icon,
- 1:12:09then look down and choose your wiper setting from a pop up menu on the screen.
- 1:12:13Wow.
- 1:12:15It got really poor marks in terms of like visibility.
- 1:12:18Apparently you can't see out of the thing.
- 1:12:20They summarize it in two words.
- 1:12:23It says further in the article.
- 1:12:24Bunker visibility.
- 1:12:30I also like the other comment in the con column.
- 1:12:33Cosplay quote unquote off road tires.
- 1:12:36Apparently they were horrible.
- 1:12:38They mudded up immediately and it went like spinning and sliding.
- 1:12:42Whereas like the Rivian and the Ford on their like, Whatever normal
- 1:12:45street tires were, it was like, fine.
- 1:12:47And they're Cooper's that they got, you know, like whatever.
- 1:12:51I also like the borderline dangerous secondary trolls.
- 1:12:55Yeah.
- 1:12:56Like that windshield wiper is great.
- 1:12:59It never ends.
- 1:13:00Like there's a reason why, and it goes back to the manufacturers now also back
- 1:13:05peddling on the whole infotainment.
- 1:13:07Let's control everything with this big, huge.
- 1:13:10iPad in the middle of your console, the tactile, the levers behind the
- 1:13:15steering wheel, knobs that you can intuitively just reach for, feel,
- 1:13:18and you don't have to look at them.
- 1:13:20I shouldn't have to divert my eyes to use my windshield wipers.
- 1:13:24I should just be able to flick if they're on immediately.
- 1:13:27I feel like the Cybertruck is this giant social experiment.
- 1:13:30We're gonna throw the craziest crap at this and then see how people react to it.
- 1:13:35Who's the engineer that said, you know what?
- 1:13:37I'm going to make the windshield wiper work like this.
- 1:13:39Let's see what they think about it.
- 1:13:41It's like, here, hold my beer.
- 1:13:42Like the whole truck is here.
- 1:13:44Hold my beer, right?
- 1:13:45It makes no sense whatsoever.
- 1:13:48But again, these are some of the clearest pictures I've gotten of the windshield
- 1:13:51wiper, the side mirrors, the headlights, some other things about the truck.
- 1:13:55Everything else has sort of been obscured.
- 1:13:56And what's also fun about the picture of the cyber truck just
- 1:14:00above the pro and con column.
- 1:14:02Look how gross.
- 1:14:04I don't, I have like, it's just like, yeah, it looks dirty.
- 1:14:10It's just awful.
- 1:14:12Like, disgusting.
- 1:14:14It looks like, you know, you haven't washed your car in a month
- 1:14:16and it gets that grime that's like streaking down the sides.
- 1:14:21I'm like, just go look at your stainless steel appliances in your kitchen.
- 1:14:25Come on.
- 1:14:25And that roof line, I mean, it looks like combination Frank Lloyd
- 1:14:29Wright meets a kindergartner.
- 1:14:31Like who wants their car to look like a house?
- 1:14:33In profile.
- 1:14:34Like, it doesn't make sense.
- 1:14:36I could make something less angular out of Legos, and with better precision
- 1:14:41as we know, than this Cybertruck.
- 1:14:42Like, oh god, it's terrible.
- 1:14:45It'll be interesting the day we finally see one on the road.
- 1:14:48We're never gonna see one on the road.
- 1:14:49There's only like three Crest Cybertrucks running around.
- 1:14:52That's what it is.
- 1:14:53Nobody actually owns these things.
- 1:14:55So bad.
- 1:14:56Well, enough of that.
- 1:14:57My expectations are once again lowered.
- 1:15:00Lowered expectations.
- 1:15:01I told you guys I would check in.
- 1:15:05Did you watch the Ferrari movie?
- 1:15:07Nope.
- 1:15:08What Ferrari movie?
- 1:15:10This is becoming like Drive to Survive.
- 1:15:12So is it going to be one of these deals where if I watch an episode
- 1:15:15of Drive to Survive, you guys will watch the Ferrari movie?
- 1:15:17Is that where this is going?
- 1:15:18Yes.
- 1:15:18No, I'm not, not watching it for any particular reason.
- 1:15:21I'm just not watching it.
- 1:15:23For the same reasons I'm not watching a lot of other movies
- 1:15:25that have just come out.
- 1:15:26I just haven't made the time.
- 1:15:28I thought you were going to say because they suck.
- 1:15:29There's always that potential too.
- 1:15:31Whatever.
- 1:15:31I'll get your guys opinion on it eventually.
- 1:15:33If you didn't have enough things to watch or review with Steve and Izzy
- 1:15:37from Everything I Learned From Movies, here's another one to add to the list.
- 1:15:40This one's called The Lionheart and it's on HBO Max.
- 1:15:44Yes, it is about Dan Weldon, who was a British motor racing driver
- 1:15:48and he was in the IndyCar series.
- 1:15:50But he died in 2011 in a racing incident.
- 1:15:54And I have been told by some folks that watched it, they said, quote, if you
- 1:15:58haven't watched it, I'm ashamed of you.
- 1:16:00You need to watch it now.
- 1:16:01Okay.
- 1:16:02That was what Sam said.
- 1:16:04All right.
- 1:16:05So that's on my list to watch and report back on and see what that's all about.
- 1:16:09I don't know that story.
- 1:16:10I don't follow IndyCar that much.
- 1:16:12I've heard that it's good.
- 1:16:13So I'm curious.
- 1:16:14I did see it pop on my feed the other day and it kind of glazed over
- 1:16:17it because I was like, Oh, IndyCar.
- 1:16:19Yeah, I'll get to that now that it's been reinforced.
- 1:16:22I guess I'm sort of feeling guilt tripped into watching it.
- 1:16:25I think I remember when this happened.
- 1:16:26Obviously I don't know all the particulars and I didn't follow
- 1:16:30the series that closely, but I think I do recall when it happened.
- 1:16:33Well, this next one, it was a toss up of where we were going to put it.
- 1:16:37Is it Florida man?
- 1:16:38Or is it lowered expectations?
- 1:16:40It's pretty close.
- 1:16:42How?
- 1:16:42Nebraska woman used a rewards card loophole for 7, 000 gallons of free gas?
- 1:16:48She ain't ever changing to EV.
- 1:16:52So now you know, we talked about how much gas can you buy for 10, 000.
- 1:16:56Well, for 27, 000 equivalent, that's 7, 000 gallons of gas.
- 1:17:01That's a lot.
- 1:17:02How does she do this?
- 1:17:03This woman is accused of improperly using her rewards card from Pump
- 1:17:07and Pantry in Lincoln, Nebraska, at least 500 times over six months.
- 1:17:13What does that mean?
- 1:17:14I don't understand.
- 1:17:15It says here, there's usually nothing wrong with using a rewards
- 1:17:18card, but police say the woman took advantage of a software update from
- 1:17:22November 2022 that managed orders and rewards cards at the fuel pump.
- 1:17:28She hacked the fuel pump, I think is what we're saying here.
- 1:17:31Dang.
- 1:17:32According to this, She used the rewards card 510 times.
- 1:17:36She's accused of being paid to give her card to another woman to get free gas.
- 1:17:42So if you had a 14 gallon tank, that's 500 tanks of fuel that you could fill.
- 1:17:48That's a lot of driving.
- 1:17:49Where was she going to Canada and back?
- 1:17:52Fill up say twice a month, then that's 24 times a year.
- 1:17:56That's almost 21 years.
- 1:17:59Wow.
- 1:18:02She was filling semi trucks or something like I don't get it.
- 1:18:05That's ridiculous.
- 1:18:06So if you two know how to hack the TV based gas pump, like they
- 1:18:11have it pump and pantry, you can get some free gas apparently.
- 1:18:14But you got to unload that gas pretty fast because Right?
- 1:18:18Where did she store 7, 000 gallons?
- 1:18:20How do you launder it?
- 1:18:22Oh my god, it's like the Sonny and Philadelphia episode.
- 1:18:25He shows up with a 90 gallon trash can and then he starts trying to sell
- 1:18:28it door to door, you remember that?
- 1:18:30Same thing, or those crazy people.
- 1:18:32What was it, we were having the gas shortage thing, like temporarily there
- 1:18:35for like a minute during COVID and everybody's like buying gas and people
- 1:18:38are trying to put it in trash bags.
- 1:18:39You remember that?
- 1:18:42How do you move 7, 000 gallons in six months?
- 1:18:45That's a lot of gas.
- 1:18:46How did they not notice this sooner?
- 1:18:49This woman's going with like 18 gas cans.
- 1:18:52I'm gonna say it again.
- 1:18:54Pump and Pantry, Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 1:18:56Is that the name of a city?
- 1:18:58No, that's the name of the gas station.
- 1:19:00Where are you from?
- 1:19:02Oh, I'm from Pump and Pantry, Lincoln.
- 1:19:04That's in Nebraska.
- 1:19:05Oh, it was Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 1:19:07Got it.
- 1:19:07Okay.
- 1:19:07Sorry.
- 1:19:08No offense to anybody from Nebraska.
- 1:19:09My family's from Nebraska.
- 1:19:11The other thing is if she hacked the machine, maybe she found the Easter
- 1:19:14egg, touch this corner, dance on your head, pick your nose at the same time.
- 1:19:18Noob Saibot.
- 1:19:18Yeah, right.
- 1:19:19But it doesn't usually work that way.
- 1:19:21If you're going to hack the thing.
- 1:19:23So she's out there with her laptop, plugging into the card reader and
- 1:19:27like hacking into the machine.
- 1:19:28Like how did, or is it like, you know, you see in like blacklist and she
- 1:19:32puts the thing and it starts beeping and 93 million numbers start going.
- 1:19:36How do you hack a gas pump to make this happen?
- 1:19:39I don't know.
- 1:19:40But this is also why I don't buy gas from no name gas stations.
- 1:19:45Why?
- 1:19:46It would have been in your bed.
- 1:19:47That's when you pay with cash.
- 1:19:49You could have gotten 7, 000 gallons of just watered down crap too.
- 1:19:53You know what I mean?
- 1:19:54Yeah, you could have been in for a rude awakening.
- 1:19:56This could have been a Florida Man story.
- 1:19:58It's right there.
- 1:19:59It's borderline.
- 1:19:59Yeah, the fact that it didn't make it to Florida Man leads me to believe
- 1:20:03that we've got something really spicy in the Florida Man section.
- 1:20:05No, I don't know that we do, unfortunately.
- 1:20:09Does that mean we gotta go down south for alligators and bear?
- 1:20:28Was this one in Flowrider?
- 1:20:30No, this was in Arizona.
- 1:20:32We're adding states.
- 1:20:33We add Nebraska.
- 1:20:34Let's say that other one gets an honorable mention.
- 1:20:36It counts.
- 1:20:37I feel like we need a map of the United States behind one of us with little
- 1:20:42pins on where these stories are from.
- 1:20:44Tanya and I talked about this.
- 1:20:45We're going to put it on the website.
- 1:20:46We've hit a lot of states.
- 1:20:48We are missing some.
- 1:20:50I ran a report.
- 1:20:51We figured out where all our stories are coming from.
- 1:20:53Did you use the Power BI?
- 1:20:55Used Excel, like Williams.
- 1:20:59Nobody needs that sophisticated AWS, just use Excel spreadsheets.
- 1:21:02Tried and true, baby.
- 1:21:03You can do a lot with Excel.
- 1:21:05I do try to look in the lesser known states in this segment.
- 1:21:11The best stories come out of Florida.
- 1:21:12Have yet to find South Dakota man, you know, but I'm looking, I do try to look.
- 1:21:17They don't have communication out of South Dakota.
- 1:21:20You have to actually go there.
- 1:21:22You have to go to Sturgis to.
- 1:21:25I might have to be more specific.
- 1:21:27I might have to be like city specific.
- 1:21:30Like a pump and pump and pantry, South Dakota pump and pantry.
- 1:21:34This story is a lot like the carjacking story, though.
- 1:21:38This is stupid criminal file.
- 1:21:41So guy gets out of jail needs the way home somehow randomly comes across
- 1:21:48Like a Volvo car hauler loaded up with over 1, 000, 000 worth of Corvettes.
- 1:21:53So that's how many Corvettes were on this thing.
- 1:21:55And he steals it to drive home to wherever Pumpin Pantry, Arizona.
- 1:22:01There must be like 900 lojacks on this thing.
- 1:22:04And like satellite tracking to make sure the million dollars of
- 1:22:07merchandise doesn't get stolen.
- 1:22:09Let's also be real, this ain't Smokey and the Bandit.
- 1:22:11That thing is slow.
- 1:22:13Exactly!
- 1:22:14I mean, the cop probably could like, run up next to him.
- 1:22:17Look at the road that they're on.
- 1:22:19I can't imagine that there's a lot of traffic.
- 1:22:21So this is probably his only option.
- 1:22:23You know what would have been really funny though?
- 1:22:25This guy gets in the truck, locks himself in there as the story says, and then
- 1:22:29he just drives away, blah blah blah.
- 1:22:30But what would have been really funny is, He gets in it and looks down, and
- 1:22:33it's a manual, and he goes, Ah, shit.
- 1:22:36What'd have been really funny is if he knew how to use the hauler,
- 1:22:38and he took one of the vets off and then drove the vet away.
- 1:22:41Well, that's what he should have done.
- 1:22:43But how gullible was the truck driver, too?
- 1:22:45Where was the truck?
- 1:22:46Where is this truck in the middle of a freaking desert?
- 1:22:50Where was he?
- 1:22:51According to the story, allegedly the truck was parked at the Wilcox
- 1:22:55Lowe's truck stop in Wilcox, Arizona.
- 1:22:57Oh, so this is where they caught him.
- 1:22:59This is the picture they've apprehended him at this point.
- 1:23:01No, no.
- 1:23:02Where's the Lowe's?
- 1:23:03No, Love's, the truck stop.
- 1:23:04It says here, Oh, Lowe's.
- 1:23:05When Walker, not to be confused with Texas Ranger, began to strike up a
- 1:23:09conversation with the truck driver at the truck stop, the driver attempted
- 1:23:13to climb into the cab of the truck, And Walker grabbed the driver and threw him
- 1:23:17to the ground, at which point Walker got into the truck, locked the doors,
- 1:23:20and drove out of the parking lot.
- 1:23:22So he turned down this random dirt road and then got caught.
- 1:23:25That's where he got caught.
- 1:23:27Yeah.
- 1:23:27He had missed a seal in the truck, but not the Corvettes.
- 1:23:30No, it's like Ron White.
- 1:23:34I was not drunk at all.
- 1:23:36In public until you put me in public, right?
- 1:23:39He didn't steal the Corvettes, he stole the truck.
- 1:23:41If you think about it, how many counts of Grand Theft Auto is
- 1:23:45he going to be charged with?
- 1:23:46I guess 10 vets in a truck.
- 1:23:48Oh, it says 11 accounts of theft of means of transportation.
- 1:23:52What's the thing in Monopoly?
- 1:23:53Do not pass go, go directly to jail, do not collect 200.
- 1:23:55Yeah, he got out of jail just to return revolving door right back.
- 1:24:00Oh, well.
- 1:24:01Do we have a real Florida?
- 1:24:02We have a real Florida man.
- 1:24:04Yes.
- 1:24:04Sweet.
- 1:24:05We're diverging a little from the norm.
- 1:24:07It's a motorcycle.
- 1:24:09What?
- 1:24:10Those are the best.
- 1:24:11Florida man with mullet.
- 1:24:14Wait, say that again.
- 1:24:15That's not really shocking.
- 1:24:16Florida man with mullet.
- 1:24:17Oh, damn.
- 1:24:18Oh, okay.
- 1:24:19Florida man with mullet.
- 1:24:21Fleece from cops with mullet.
- 1:24:23Will Run license plate.
- 1:24:25Wow, advertising.
- 1:24:26Yeah, so there's a video of this, and there's a picture
- 1:24:29of him and his glorious hair.
- 1:24:31Hold on a second, is that a mullet, or is that like, just got out of bed hair?
- 1:24:35Cause like, my hair looks like that some days.
- 1:24:37I don't know.
- 1:24:38Like, you know, you've been laying on a pillow the wrong way, and
- 1:24:40then you get up and your hair's like all feathery and large.
- 1:24:43Like, is that really a mullet?
- 1:24:44His hair doesn't go to his shoulders.
- 1:24:46And there's a video.
- 1:24:47He passes the Daytona beach signs.
- 1:24:50So you fast forward to minute 10.
- 1:24:52Of the video.
- 1:24:52And it hit play.
- 1:24:53Is he by the track?
- 1:24:54Yeah, he's by the track.
- 1:24:56Where we walked across that bridge.
- 1:24:57Right?
- 1:24:58Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:59And then you see the Hooters.
- 1:25:00He drives by the Hooters.
- 1:25:01Oh, yeah, that's right by Daytona International Raceway.
- 1:25:04The best part, this chase goes into the night time, they find, like,
- 1:25:08the helicopter's like, Really?
- 1:25:10Well, into the night time, I don't know, because it went into, like,
- 1:25:12night vision at the end of the video.
- 1:25:14I don't know what time of day it was, but the best part was the
- 1:25:17last, like, seconds of the video, I think the cop complimented him.
- 1:25:22I thought they weren't supposed to pursue.
- 1:25:24They pursued him with the helicopter.
- 1:25:26Oh, okay.
- 1:25:27So they weren't chasing him at speed.
- 1:25:28I think the helicopter was pursuing him, but then they kept having
- 1:25:31cops in the vicinity and then like, I don't know why he finally like
- 1:25:34stopped and then they rushed him.
- 1:25:35There you have it.
- 1:25:36Yeah, man.
- 1:25:37That's a real, real strong on the motorcycle.
- 1:25:39He goes, yeah, man, you're real strong with the motorcycle.
- 1:25:44Whatever.
- 1:25:45It's Florida, okay?
- 1:25:47It's like, none of it makes sense.
- 1:25:48It never will.
- 1:25:50But we need to go behind the pit wall and talk about motorsports news.
- 1:25:53So, I have to admit, I finally watched an F1 race.
- 1:25:57It must have been a blue moon or something.
- 1:25:59Would you like to know my reaction?
- 1:26:00Hello.
- 1:26:01I think you fell asleep.
- 1:26:01Oh, I you slept.
- 1:26:02More F1 races this year than I have.
- 1:26:05It was boring.
- 1:26:06And I thought it was stupid.
- 1:26:07I can't watch F1 anymore.
- 1:26:09I mean, max for stopping plus 20 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack.
- 1:26:13I was like barf Bahrain, not the most interesting layout either.
- 1:26:17And I kept saying to myself.
- 1:26:19You know, and there was a bunch of us watching it together, kind
- 1:26:21of did a little viewing party.
- 1:26:22And I'm like, how do you guys watch this manufacturer's championship?
- 1:26:26That's what it is.
- 1:26:27I don't get it.
- 1:26:28It's not the formula one I grew up with.
- 1:26:30You pretend that Max isn't there.
- 1:26:33And then it's who is coming in second place.
- 1:26:36I'll stick to sports car and rally.
- 1:26:38Sorry.
- 1:26:39So boring.
- 1:26:40There's been like what?
- 1:26:41Two other races since Bahrain?
- 1:26:43Since the last time?
- 1:26:43Uh, no, one.
- 1:26:45And what happened?
- 1:26:46Same thing?
- 1:26:46Lathering's repeat?
- 1:26:47I think so.
- 1:26:49Oh, that's the race that signs got appendicitis.
- 1:26:53Right before.
- 1:26:54And unfortunately he couldn't race.
- 1:26:56And so Academy Ferrari driver, Ollie Beerman, British racing driver.
- 1:27:02He stepped in as the reserve driver.
- 1:27:05He qualified in the top 10 and then finished in the top 10.
- 1:27:09So what a debut for his first time in an F1 car and he only
- 1:27:12had one practice session to acclimate to the car, essentially.
- 1:27:16So what you're saying is the secondary quarterbacks are better than the guys that
- 1:27:20are out playing the game all the time.
- 1:27:21I wouldn't say that.
- 1:27:22I would, I'm pretty sure Saenz would have done much better than what he did, but I
- 1:27:26think it's pretty impressive for what he was able to accomplish versus some of the
- 1:27:32other veteran people on the grid, right?
- 1:27:35You know what veteran means?
- 1:27:37Oh, well, yes, there's Alonzo, but then there's people that have been
- 1:27:41there for years now, like Stroll, and Okon, and Ricciardo, who's back,
- 1:27:46and it's like, that guy just, I'm sorry, no offense to the people who
- 1:27:49love him, but he's a personality.
- 1:27:50Otherwise, he's doing crap, and he's gonna lose his seat.
- 1:27:53Again, for like the sixth time.
- 1:27:54He hasn't done shit since he left Red Bull.
- 1:27:56He's been trash, but he's your heartthrob, Brad.
- 1:27:59I mean, how are you going to give up on your man?
- 1:28:01What have you done for me lately?
- 1:28:02Oh, is that how it is in the Ricciardo household?
- 1:28:05I see how it is.
- 1:28:06I just posted in our show notes, a commercial it's F1 adjacent.
- 1:28:11Have you all seen this Uber car share commercial with Valtteri Botis?
- 1:28:15No, he needs to really cut that mustache and No, he doesn't.
- 1:28:19It is a maze balls.
- 1:28:21But sadly, he's not built for the famous Ozzy Watts.
- 1:28:23That mustache makes him look like Harry at your bachelor party.
- 1:28:26Doesn't it though?
- 1:28:27For me, the star of the commercial is the car.
- 1:28:29Mullet aeration technology.
- 1:28:32And the fan behind him.
- 1:28:33The fan.
- 1:28:35It's fucking awesome!
- 1:28:37Budgie smuggler drying system.
- 1:28:40That is, I love this.
- 1:28:43This is great.
- 1:28:45For the listeners at home that don't know what we're talking about,
- 1:28:47Volterra Bodas, recently retired, is now doing commercials for Uber share.
- 1:28:53Did I miss that he retired?
- 1:28:55Or is he still driving?
- 1:28:56He's still driving.
- 1:28:57What?
- 1:28:58Yes, he's driving steak because it's not alpha anymore.
- 1:29:02Oh, okay.
- 1:29:03So let me rephrase that.
- 1:29:04No, you get to keep that one.
- 1:29:06Okay, that's fine.
- 1:29:07I thought he was retired.
- 1:29:08He should be retired.
- 1:29:09I thought he started a new career in entertainment.
- 1:29:11I thought he had like the same personality as the ice man, like Kimmy.
- 1:29:15Like he was never talked or did anything.
- 1:29:17No, Voltaire is hilarious.
- 1:29:19There's pictures of him.
- 1:29:20He's always naked recently.
- 1:29:22Laying naked in a creek.
- 1:29:23That's all for two girls, one formula.
- 1:29:24That's just for them.
- 1:29:27It's not Steak.
- 1:29:28It's Kick Sauber now.
- 1:29:30They changed the name again?
- 1:29:31I noticed, because I was pulling him up and seeing where he placed
- 1:29:34in the last race, and it said Kick Sauber under his name.
- 1:29:37And now I'm on the team's roster on F1.
- 1:29:40com, and he is part of Kick Sauber.
- 1:29:44Well, there was also rumor that Audi's gonna put their livery on
- 1:29:47the car like a year early too, but I don't know how true that is.
- 1:29:50Okay, there's Steak F1 Team Kick Sauber.
- 1:29:54Sure.
- 1:29:55That's like Visa, Cash App, MoneyGram, Chipotle.
- 1:29:58Visa, Cash App, RB Formula One team, yes.
- 1:30:01Oh my god, terrible.
- 1:30:03Well anyway, in other disciplines of motorsport, can confirm
- 1:30:08WEC can be watched on HBO Max.
- 1:30:11And the best part is it's the same feed as overseas.
- 1:30:15So you get all the awesome stuff that they would have over there
- 1:30:19and not some Americanized version.
- 1:30:21It's legitimately from overseas.
- 1:30:23So if you have HBO Max and you're a fan of Sports Garden Endurance
- 1:30:26Racing, especially the World Endurance Championship, check it out on HBO Max.
- 1:30:31Highly recommend.
- 1:30:32Can you go back and re watch races?
- 1:30:34Yeah, it's all there.
- 1:30:35Our motorsports news is brought to us in partnership with the
- 1:30:37International Motor Racing Research Center out of Watkins Glen.
- 1:30:40A quick reminder, this is the last month to get in on the
- 1:30:44sweepstakes for the Corvette E Ray.
- 1:30:46I have seen pictures of it.
- 1:30:48It is real.
- 1:30:49It is out of production.
- 1:30:50It is ready to go.
- 1:30:51It is gorgeous.
- 1:30:52It is silver with blue stripes, beautiful interior.
- 1:30:55It is a Corvette E Ray.
- 1:30:56Ray three LZ convertible.
- 1:30:59There is a couple promo codes floating around.
- 1:31:01The latest one is on racing archives.org.
- 1:31:04In the news and events section, pull up the blog and you'll be able to get
- 1:31:07the latest promo code so you can double down on your chances to win that array.
- 1:31:11You still have a month to go before they declare a winner.
- 1:31:14And I'm hearing some rumors about what the next sweepstakes car is going
- 1:31:18to be, but I can't say it just yet.
- 1:31:20So stay tuned for further updates in May and throughout the summer on what the
- 1:31:23next sweepstakes car is going to be, but you still have an opportunity to jump in
- 1:31:26there and get that 2024 Corvette E Ride.
- 1:31:29Meanwhile, the couple events that are important to the IMRRC schedule
- 1:31:34and regardless of what motor sport you're interested in, opening day
- 1:31:38at Watkins Glen is April the 6th.
- 1:31:40So there's a couple different meetups there.
- 1:31:42I know the Audi club's doing something at opening day at the Glen.
- 1:31:45There's a lot of stuff happening that weekend at Watkins Glen.
- 1:31:48On May the 11th, they're going to be doing a center conversation called as we go.
- 1:31:53Supers a legacy of speed at the steel palace, and they're going
- 1:31:57to have the Purdy deuce on display at the center during that time.
- 1:32:00So that'll be May 11th on June 22nd.
- 1:32:02They have another center conversation scheduled called the
- 1:32:05greatest Corvette story ever told.
- 1:32:07And it's about the Camerati Corvette, which will also
- 1:32:10be on display at the center.
- 1:32:11And then later in the year, September 12th, they're going to have the
- 1:32:14Cameron R Argettsinger award for outstanding contributions to motorsport.
- 1:32:18The nominee is going to be announced later this year, and that will be
- 1:32:22followed up in November by the eighth annual Argettsinger symposium on
- 1:32:27November the 1st and 2nd, which we will be live streaming yet again, this year,
- 1:32:31we're still doing all the planning.
- 1:32:32We have not figured out the schedule, who the presenters are going to be.
- 1:32:35The keynote is being kept under wraps, but it's going to be pretty exciting.
- 1:32:38So we're really looking forward to the IMRC schedule.
- 1:32:41This year, we appreciate their continued sponsorship of Brake Fix
- 1:32:45and the Motoring Podcast Network.
