- 1:03Speaker 1: uninterrupted listening and bonus content from other Pushkin shows. The
- 1:11Speaker 1: beginning of Al's life is similar to Helen's in many ways.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Like her, he grew up in New York, joined the
- 1:17Speaker 1: Young Communist League in college. After he and Helen got married,
- 1:21Speaker 1: they drove across the country to start a new life
- 1:24Speaker 1: in Hollywood. All dreamed of becoming a screenwriter, but his
- 1:28Speaker 1: timing was bad.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You're on the verge of being hired as a screenwriter
- 1:31Speaker 2: and you get drafted, right, what happens?
- 1:35Speaker 3: Then?
- 1:35Speaker 2: So was the only one in Los Angeles that sent
- 1:44Speaker 2: people out of Los Angeles for the physical, that put
- 1:48Speaker 2: me in a bus, sent me to Fresno with a
- 1:51Speaker 2: group of others from that draft board for my physical
- 1:55Speaker 2: and then back. I mean it was really insane. And
- 1:59Speaker 2: then when I went into the Army, I was stationed
- 2:03Speaker 2: at Culver City at what was familiarly known as Fort
- 2:06Speaker 2: Roach for year and a half. You know about Fort Roach,
- 2:13Speaker 2: I assume Herod Studios. It was the Howard Studios that
- 2:16Speaker 2: were taken over by the government for the First Motion
- 2:21Speaker 2: Picture Unit.
- 2:22Speaker 1: The First Motion Picture Unit was part of the Army
- 2:25Speaker 1: Air Forces during the Second World War. They made training
- 2:28Speaker 1: films and newsreels.
- 2:30Speaker 3: She was a B twenty nine the Superport, with twenty
- 2:35Speaker 3: two hundred horsepower in each of four engines, with a
- 2:39Speaker 3: fuel capacity equal to that of a railroad tank car,
- 2:42Speaker 3: a tail that climbed two stories into the air, a
- 2:46Speaker 3: body longer than a Corvette.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Avid listeners of revisionist history may not just recognize that voice,
- 2:54Speaker 1: but the very clip run of Reagan narrated many of
- 2:57Speaker 1: these films. Red loving al Levitt and Red Baiting run
- 3:01Speaker 1: of Reagan were actually co workers.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Every day for a year and a half, I would
- 3:07Speaker 2: see Nan, then called Reagan who arrived at the post.
- 3:14Speaker 2: He arrived there before I did, but he arrived from
- 3:18Speaker 2: a cavalry outfit wearing jod present a campaign hat, and
- 3:22Speaker 2: nobody could take him seriously. From then on he was laughingstock.
