- 0:00Welcome to Mommy Wood recut past episodes present moment.
- 0:05I wanted to do something a little different so I'm going
- 0:08back and re listening to some of the early episodes of Mommy
- 0:12Wood. This episode with Marla Sokolov
- 0:15honestly hit me completely differently than when it did
- 0:20when we recorded it, which at the time was, which was three
- 0:25years ago, over three years ago. At the time, I was a brand new
- 0:29mom just trying to figure out how I could possibly keep
- 0:32pursuing acting and also be the parent I wanted to be.
- 0:35And Marla was already living it. She had three kids, a long
- 0:40career in the industry, and trying to redefine what success
- 0:45actually looks like after motherhood.
- 0:47So I pulled together some of my favorite moments from that
- 0:51conversation. The parts about losing momentum,
- 0:54the guilt, the identity shift, and the honesty around things
- 0:59like work, body image, and feeding your baby.
- 1:03There's a lot in here that I think creative moms especially
- 1:07don't hear out loud enough. So if you've ever wondered
- 1:10whether you can still be yourself and a mom at the same
- 1:15time, I think this episode will really resonate.
- 1:19So please enjoy this episode of Mommy Recut with Marla Sokolov.
- 1:25Thank you so much for being here, I'm so excited to ask.
- 1:28You so many questions. First of all, tell me your
- 1:34daughter's ages and names again. OK, so I have Elliot who's 10, I
- 1:40have Olive who's 7:00, and then I have Harper who is 7 1/2
- 1:46months. Oh my God, so you who are in the
- 1:51thick of it, I guess it'll just always be the thick of it.
- 1:55I know because it's funny, it is, it's true.
- 1:58There really is always the thick of it because you would think
- 2:00like what? My 10 year old is easy in so
- 2:02many ways. You know, because she has, she
- 2:07could do everything herself essentially.
- 2:08Like I always joke. I could give her like a pass,
- 2:11you know the code to my post mates and I could like leave her
- 2:13at home and as long as she's feeding herself, she'd be fine
- 2:15because she's very responsible. But it comes with so much more
- 2:19hard, you know, 'cause now she's in fifth grade and I have to
- 2:22stay on top of her, like homework and her tests and her
- 2:25studies and all the things that I like, barely understand and,
- 2:28you know, and then friendship stuff and crushes.
- 2:32And so it's like, yeah, having a baby, as you know, is really
- 2:35hard and a lot of work, but in many ways it's easier.
- 2:39I don't know. It's all very tricky.
- 2:41I was. Gonna ask you have like a pretty
- 2:45broad spectrum of the ages right now.
- 2:47I was gonna ask if one was easier than the other cuz right
- 2:51now, you know, May's only three months and so I'm trying to
- 2:54enjoy while she can't. Yeah, cuz I'm like, oh right.
- 2:59I can set her and she'll be. OK, for.
- 3:03Now, exactly. You can put her in like a
- 3:06docking station and she won't complain about it.
- 3:08And then, you know, Yeah. I mean, it's funny.
- 3:11I feel like because it's my third, I know everything.
- 3:13That's not everything. I don't know everything, but I
- 3:16know what's up ahead. You know, I'm like, she's about
- 3:18to crawl. You could see how she.
- 3:21What was it? Yeah, I would say with my first,
- 3:24you know, I wanted to have a baby so badly.
- 3:27Like I was like, OK, I'm ready, it's time.
- 3:28We had been married for like 3 years or something.
- 3:30So that was like the natural, you know, next step.
- 3:34But I feel like I made not the mistake because it wasn't a
- 3:39mistake. I would never say anything I've
- 3:41done with my children as a mistake, but I was so into being
- 3:45a mom that I really wanted nothing to do with working for a
- 3:48second. And then about, I would say 6 to
- 3:528 months after she was born, I'm like, OK, I'm ready to get back
- 3:54into it. And it was a lot harder than I
- 3:55thought. You know, like once you lose
- 3:57that momentum or people are like, oh, she had a baby.
- 4:00She's kind of like off the map for a second.
- 4:05I was actually surprised at how hard it was to kind of get back
- 4:08to work with my second daughter. I oddly like got all these
- 4:13pregnant lady jobs. So I kept working when I was
- 4:15pregnant. I did like an ARC on Grey's
- 4:17Anatomy and a pregnant job on Hot in Cleveland.
- 4:21So I didn't really stop with her.
- 4:23But then with Harper, I, you know, was even more concerned
- 4:27with Harper because I had totally worked the past few
- 4:31years at pivoting my career from acting, you know, and I really
- 4:36was focusing on directing. But I wasn't at a place, you
- 4:40know, where it was like, I'm so established that I could go away
- 4:43and come back no problem, you know?
- 4:45So I think that was like a, you know, a valid concern, you know,
- 4:49but I think everybody has that. I think no matter what you do
- 4:51for a living, you know, you're going to be worried about you're
- 4:54going to be worried about your career.
- 4:56So yeah, I think any any career, if you're a doctor, if you're a
- 4:59lawyer, if you're whatever, it's like breaking up that momentum
- 5:02and like, you know, taking time to focus on something completely
- 5:05different is really scary. But I always say it's like
- 5:07nothing one definitely different.
- 5:09I feel like with my first one, I was like, I'm prepping, like I
- 5:11was so excited about it. And then the second one I was I
- 5:14was really nervous, you know, because I felt like I had worked
- 5:17so hard to, you know, kind of get back on track.
- 5:21So I was worried that, you know, that was going to be met with
- 5:23some sort of like hesitancy. But on this third one, that
- 5:28definitely was the most stressful to tell my reps
- 5:30because, you know, I'm sure you've let on to your reps or
- 5:34people around you, you're like, you know, we're thinking of
- 5:36having a baby or, you know, I'm, I'm assuming it wasn't a big
- 5:39shock to a lot of people. But in this case, you know, I
- 5:42had a 10 year old child and a 7 year old child.
- 5:44So I don't think anyone thought there was like another baby
- 5:46coming, you know, so I didn't tell my reps I think I was like
- 5:505 months pregnant, something like that.
- 5:52Like once I was like visibly pregnant.
- 5:54Yeah. I got to start telling people,
- 5:58yeah. Oh my gosh.
- 5:59So you said like you guys have been married for three years.
- 6:03You were just like you knew you wanted kids, you're ready for
- 6:08it. Did you like worry about, you
- 6:10said you, you kind of took a break, but was that break after
- 6:14your first one intentional or was it just like, that's kind of
- 6:20what happened? Because I, you know, obviously
- 6:24in this career, we don't really get maternity leave and it's not
- 6:29like there's a set like this is when you're coming back and this
- 6:35and you're coming back to work right away.
- 6:39So I know you said it, it took a little while to get back into
- 6:42it, but were you, was that conscious on your part?
- 6:45Like were you like, I'm going to take this much time afterwards?
- 6:48I'm sure it was different from the first one then the other
- 6:51two. Yeah, So with Elliot, my oldest
- 6:53daughter, it was 100% intentional.
- 6:56She had some like health problems when she was born, but
- 6:59we knew that was going to happen.
- 7:01We knew when I was pregnant that this was something.
- 7:04So it wasn't like a big shock when she was born, but so she
- 7:07needed to have part of her lung removed when she was five months
- 7:11old. I know.
- 7:14So she had a pretty, she had a pretty big surgery.
- 7:16And I had always told my reps, like everybody around me,
- 7:19friends, whomever, that I would take time off through that
- 7:24surgery at least, you know, because that's not something I
- 7:27wanted to miss. And I remember I actually got
- 7:28offered and this is, I won't name the company because I don't
- 7:31work for them anymore because of this scenario.
- 7:33And again, there is truly no regret that happens in life.
- 7:38But I had gotten offered a movie, I think she was two
- 7:41months old or something. And she had to have ACT scan to
- 7:44go over like where she was in the light.
- 7:46And it was like, you know, when you have a baby, like these
- 7:48things are very scheduled and there's all based on like her
- 7:51weight and like timing and all that.
- 7:53And so I turned down the movie, but I told my reps like, please
- 7:57let them know This is why I'm turning down the movie.
- 7:59It's not because I am just like flippantly not, you know, I
- 8:03don't like the script or something like that.
- 8:05And the person who was my Rep at the time didn't relay that.
- 8:09And it was just like a straight up pass.
- 8:12And then I didn't know this story until about five years
- 8:15later. A friend of mine was working for
- 8:17this company, and they said, yeah, you know, we were so
- 8:20surprised. Like, Marla just kind of passed
- 8:22on one of our projects, you know, and with no explanation.
- 8:25Yeah. And that really was a bummer.
- 8:28And I actually did wind up sending an e-mail letting them
- 8:31know, you know, it was really just something that I had to
- 8:33stay home to do, you know, because it was filming in Canada
- 8:36and I didn't want to leave, you know, and I wasn't going to
- 8:39bring her with me with. Find or not find the balance
- 8:43because I feel like with such a busy.
- 8:47With. You know, schedule and kids and
- 8:50it's like, how how do? You do it.
- 8:54Or what's your secret or not secret or I?
- 8:57Know exactly. It's like I had a friend
- 8:59yesterday and she posted this video.
- 9:01Not a video, she posted a like a story slide that just said, you
- 9:06know, she actually, I think her daughter is almost the same age
- 9:08as May. She wrote something like, you
- 9:12know, today's just one of those days.
- 9:14Like I'm having a really hard time and this is really hard and
- 9:16blah, blah, blah. So I sent her a video of me
- 9:19holding Harper still in my workout clothes from the
- 9:21morning. It was 6:00 or something.
- 9:23I'm like, hi, I just want to let you know I'm in my workout
- 9:26clothes, still haven't taken a shower.
- 9:27I have two kids that I still have to feed dinner.
- 9:30They're both doing homework. Like I, oh, and then I forgot to
- 9:32pick my dog up at the groomers. So, so I had to go back and get
- 9:35her. I've been to Costco, I've been
- 9:36to Trader Joe's, I've been trying to work.
- 9:37It's like, girl, I get, I get it.
- 9:39I see you and I have a nanny, you know, so it's not like it's
- 9:42me here all by myself. Like I'm not going to pretend,
- 9:44you know, I have help, but it's just, it's a lot.
- 9:48And I do think in some weird way, there's some like value and
- 9:52what that manager said to you, because it's not you can't, but
- 9:55it's there are times where you're really good at being a
- 9:57mom and not as great at your career.
- 10:00And then there's other times where I feel like I'm doing
- 10:02like, you know, super focused on work.
- 10:04And I know that like I'm not as focused on my family as I
- 10:08normally AM because my focus is here.
- 10:10So the one thing I try to really do is if I know I'm starting a
- 10:15job, I try to set everything up like prep wise, the same way I
- 10:19prep a movie, you know, like as an actor or as a director.
- 10:22So whatever homework I do, I do it for my family too.
- 10:26So I make sure hot lunch is ordered every day for school.
- 10:28You know, I don't normally do that.
- 10:30I normally make them lunch, but while I'm working, I check that
- 10:32off my list. I make sure they have every play
- 10:36date. I mean, obviously your
- 10:37daughter's age, it's harder to do this, but you must make sure
- 10:40babysitters are set up or like they're picked up at school or
- 10:43some a friend is over so they're busy, you know where they have
- 10:46piano lesson. Like I just try to literally, I
- 10:48have a calendar that I keep for my nanny and my husband and me
- 10:51and everybody could see this is what everyone's doing.
- 10:53So when I'm at work, I don't have to be like shit who's
- 10:55picking them up or like so and so has to go here.
- 10:57So it's like everybody just knows, you know?
- 11:00So that makes it a lot easier. Obviously again with the babies
- 11:05it's harder because you can't really schedule too much for
- 11:08them. It's more just making sure they
- 11:09are fed and, you know, loved. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:12I feel like we, you and I have similar type A personality.
- 11:16I know I have certain friends who like check their nanny cams
- 11:19all day and, you know, do all of that and like they're just
- 11:22checking in all the time. And I think once you build up
- 11:24that trust with someone and you're giving them like the most
- 11:26important thing in your world, you know, like, like I said, as
- 11:30long as there's nothing happening that's like hurting
- 11:32them, you know, if they're giving them like an extra bottle
- 11:35or something like that, it's like, you know, you do have to
- 11:38kind of just know that you've trusted that person and you have
- 11:41to kind of let that stuff go. I mean, there's still times
- 11:44where like, you know, especially now that my daughters are older,
- 11:46they can like manipulate, you know, the person who's watching
- 11:49them. And like, you know, she's like,
- 11:52oh, you know, she let us have some Sprite today.
- 11:54And I was like, what? You know, like that kind of
- 11:56stuff or like. My mom said I can do this.
- 12:00But they do that now. So it's like, you know, you
- 12:03can't get that mad because I mean, I do.
- 12:05But you know, you still kind of have to like, just like let some
- 12:08of that stuff go and just know that, you know, you're you got
- 12:13to take care of yourself and do what's best for you.
- 12:15And if that's going to work and like makes you a better mom,
- 12:17then you got to kind of just let go of that part of it.
- 12:22Oh. Man, that's so hard.
- 12:26It's very hard, like, And then the guilt too.
- 12:29You feel like bad, you know? And I'm barely even gone, right?
- 12:37So Speaking of now you're like writing and directing.
- 12:40How long have you been doing that?
- 12:43Like when did you decide to switch into that?
- 12:45Was that something that came along with having children
- 12:50because of like, you can control stuff a little bit more, or was
- 12:54it something you'd always wanted to do?
- 12:57Yeah, I think kids were definitely a big factor in me.
- 13:00Like putting that, you know, what's the word I'm looking for
- 13:05that plan in action because. And yeah, I always have written,
- 13:09never really thought that I would be a director full time.
- 13:12Like I think I always knew in the back of my mind I'll dabble
- 13:14in directing or direct something I'm in or whatever.
- 13:17But I was definitely surprised by how much I loved it and how
- 13:21that this was the thing that I really wanted to put in, like
- 13:23the focus of my career. But yeah, I mean, I was at a bar
- 13:28one night with my husband crying hysterically because I hadn't
- 13:33worked in the 2nd. And I felt like I kept going
- 13:35into these rooms and beating dead eyes.
- 13:37And I was like, I don't know what to do anymore.
- 13:40I'm so frustrated. I feel like I'm banging my head
- 13:42up against the wall. And I would literally pull up to
- 13:44auditions. This is the days of us going in
- 13:46person back. In the day.
- 13:49The good old days, but I would like sit in my car and like just
- 13:52want to drive off, you know, And so I thought this isn't normal.
- 13:55I shouldn't feel like this anymore.
- 13:56And everyone always tells you like the second it's not fun
- 13:58anymore, stop doing it. And I'm like, I'm it's not fun
- 14:00anymore. I felt traumatized, you know, I
- 14:03was so down on myself if I didn't get something.
- 14:07And you know, I just, it was all just needed and I was in my own
- 14:10way clearly. But you know, my husband said
- 14:13you have all these like great things that you've written.
- 14:15Why don't you just go make one? And I thought, can I do that?
- 14:19Do I know how to do that? Who's going to help me with
- 14:21this? And you know, from that moment
- 14:24on, I put together a plan to make a short of something that I
- 14:27felt really passionate about and asked everyone I knew to help me
- 14:30with it. And people were willing to and
- 14:32it was so addictive. You know, I was like, this is
- 14:35this is addicting. This is what I want to do with
- 14:37my life. And I think having kids helped
- 14:41me make that decision because it is more on, you know, you are
- 14:44more in charge. You know, like, obviously I'm
- 14:46not picking and choosing the movies.
- 14:48I do, but you do get a little bit more control and you feel
- 14:55like you're not answering to someone else.
- 14:57I mean, like in regards to your career, you know, like, oh, do I
- 15:00have any auditions coming up? Or has anyone checked my veil on
- 15:04this, that or the other? It's like I actually, I'm always
- 15:06telling my manager what's going on or my agents because I'm the
- 15:10one making the calls and sending the emails.
- 15:12And, you know, it's like you're really your own advocate.
- 15:15Yeah, So what, what, what was that like first thing that you
- 15:21did and how did that, how did it go?
- 15:24Were you scared? What did you do with like where
- 15:28were your you just have like the babysitter with the kids or like
- 15:32were you just? So how?
- 15:34Is it different then from now? From now so you know, the the
- 15:39the the the the whole premise of the short is based on a
- 15:42preschool. Oh yes.
- 15:45Yes, I know the one. Yeah.
- 15:47And I literally, it was just, this is just my like
- 15:50personality. I would walk into that class and
- 15:52almost like I roll, you know, I mean, I love that school and
- 15:54we're going to go back there and it was such a great experience.
- 15:56But you would walk in and there would be pictures of all the
- 15:59kids and like what they each were allergic to.
- 16:02And, you know, just things that, you know, aren't real allergies,
- 16:05you know, just things their parents didn't want them to
- 16:07have, you know, like red dyes, you know, and stuff like that.
- 16:10And it just used to always make me laugh.
- 16:12Like I was just like, this is so LA.
- 16:14Everything about this is so LA. And the kids who would bring
- 16:16like, you know, tofu and seaweed and stuff is their snack.
- 16:19And, you know, just, I wasn't raised like that, you know, I
- 16:22didn't grow up here in LA And like my kids, luckily we're so
- 16:25lucky we don't have any allergies, so I let them eat
- 16:27whatever. And so I literally went home
- 16:30that day after having just like, you know, a funny afternoon
- 16:34staring at this preschool classroom.
- 16:36And I wrote this script and like, you know, two hours or
- 16:39something, you know, it's a short.
- 16:40And I was like, I think that's the one I want to make, you
- 16:43know, because I think people make fun of us in LA anyway.
- 16:47And just how, you know, our kids names and what we feed them and,
- 16:50you know, how we are with them. And it's yoga and the
- 16:52meditating. And so, yeah, it was people
- 16:55like, really, it resonated with people, which was great.
- 17:01And what's I going to say? Yeah, I remember we shot it on a
- 17:06weekend because it was a preschool, so we couldn't use
- 17:09Monday through Friday. And my husband came and, like,
- 17:11the girls loved it. I mean, they were older, you
- 17:13know, Like, I think all of them must have been 2.
- 17:18And Elliot was about to go into kindergarten, so.
- 17:21Or No, she was just in kindergarten.
- 17:22This her first year. Kindergarten.
- 17:24Yeah. So I remember.
- 17:26They did they hang along or where they was.
- 17:29He was with the most of the day and he kept like bringing them.
- 17:31They came by to set to visit because it was the preschool
- 17:33they went to. So it was like exciting for them
- 17:35to be there. Yeah.
- 17:39So. So did you and but but Elliot
- 17:43wasn't in it, right? She actually was in it.
- 17:47Yeah. She's in it like.
- 17:48I think she was in it and she was like in kindergarten.
- 17:54So she must have been like the perfect age for it too, yeah.
- 17:57She was totally the perfect age. And then a lot of her friends
- 17:59that were in that preschool, I threw some of them in too,
- 18:01because they were like trying to be actors.
- 18:03I, I didn't ask anybody who like didn't want to be an actor cuz,
- 18:06you know, I'm not going to put that upon anybody.
- 18:08But, you know, some of them, like, already had agents and
- 18:10we're trying to, yeah. That's wild.
- 18:13Yeah. So Speaking of, do you, did your
- 18:16did Elliot show interest in it or were you like, hey, just you
- 18:19want to be in this or like do Rodder show interest in it?
- 18:24Are you nervous for them? Would you let?
- 18:27Them. All of those questions.
- 18:29And you know what's so funny? I would say this is like top,
- 18:32one of the top like 5 questions I get asked, you know?
- 18:34But like in every interview, every friend, every person on
- 18:36the street, I am a big believer in going to study what you love
- 18:42while you're in school, studying it, making sure you love it.
- 18:47And then once you are done with school, then absolutely I would
- 18:51like support and help and do all the things.
- 18:53But as far as like getting an ad, an agent, like when you're a
- 18:58little kid, I won't I I'm not into into that for my children,
- 19:02you know, but my older daughter is definitely like, I want to be
- 19:05an actress, like, OK, great. Well, and especially, yeah, it's
- 19:11like like you said, your if your oldest really does want to like
- 19:16get into it, seeing that like it is, it's not easy.
- 19:21There's a lot of. Ups and downs.
- 19:26So how did you? OK, you look amazing and you
- 19:32just had a baby and you've had three and you look great for not
- 19:37having children. So I'm going to ask you the
- 19:40question, the vain question of did you worry about your body
- 19:45image? Like was it different for each
- 19:47one? Do you just let it go?
- 19:50Like how did you? Go with my first daughter.
- 19:54I gained almost 60 lbs because I was like, I'm pregnant.
- 19:58This has like, I just felt like, and I think also being an
- 20:02actress all these years and like, being on a permanent diet,
- 20:05you know, I was like, I'm not gonna, I'm not allowed to diet
- 20:08now. This is so freeing.
- 20:09Yeah. And then it took me like
- 20:12literally, I remember being her first birthday party and being
- 20:15like, these are my old jeans. I finally got them back on.
- 20:18You know, it's like a year later I was wearing the pants that I
- 20:21wore when I got pregnant. So then, which is still?
- 20:25That's still really good. That's really good, I.
- 20:27Really. OK, so to me, it felt endless.
- 20:29Like, I was just like, you know, you walk into your closet and
- 20:31you're like literally can't wear any of this.
- 20:34That's where I'm at. It sucks.
- 20:36I it's the, I mean, you're three months out, so I get it.
- 20:40We don't. Want to buy new clothes?
- 20:43No. I'll just wear yoga pants, which
- 20:46I do anyway, so why do I? Get it.
- 20:48Exactly. But with my second, I was like,
- 20:51OK, we're not doing that again, Marla.
- 20:53That took way too much. It was like a lot of work, you
- 20:55know? Yeah, getting that off like it
- 20:57was going to a dietitian. And you know, I actually taught
- 21:00spinning at the time, so I was doing.
- 21:02But my last question, what is something that has just saved
- 21:08you like either a like a product or you know, just a mantra or
- 21:17anything that's just like that you would recommend or that has
- 21:22just been a lifesaver for you? OK, OK.
- 21:27I would say like mantra, I have the same mantra that I've had
- 21:31for years and I always tell myself the only way out is
- 21:35through. And I did not come up with this.
- 21:39Is it ever. So you said it.
- 21:40I'm going to get, I'm going to get the exact quote, but and it
- 21:45always helps me because then it's especially with being a
- 21:47parent because like I said, everything is so heightened and
- 21:52important when you're in the moment.
- 21:53And then once you're through, it's over and you're like, wow,
- 21:55that time really sucked. And I'm glad that we're not in
- 21:58that phase anymore. And product, I would say there's
- 22:05this thing called the baby shusher.
- 22:07Did you happen to get that? I did.
- 22:09I got the the Frida version of. It so that thing's amazing.
- 22:15I love it so much. That helped because my daughter
- 22:17was having the hardest time in the car.
- 22:19She would just hate her car seat and somebody told me to turn
- 22:22that thing on and it totally calmed her down.
- 22:24And then also there's this car seat stroller called the Duna
- 22:30and that has been amazing for having more than one kid.
- 22:34I've seen those so much lately. As soon as like I saw one person
- 22:39with it now I see everyone and I'm like Dang all.
- 22:43Right, yeah, cuz it's like you run into target, you know, you
- 22:45no more of like carrying that heavy car seat and trying to
- 22:48figure out what it's like. It turns into a stroller, run
- 22:50in, run out. Or like if I'm picking my big
- 22:52girls up at school, it's like, you know, take her out.
- 22:56A thing turns into a stroller. We run right in, you know.
- 22:58Somebody was smart. Yeah.
- 23:02Oh my gosh. Well, thank you so much.
- 23:05I know you have of. Course.
- 23:08Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Mommy Wood
- 23:12Recut with Marla Sokolov. I loved going back to this
- 23:16conversation because it reminds me that there isn't a clean
- 23:19answer to balancing motherhood and a creative career.
- 23:22They're just seasons. The only way out is through.
- 23:28And sometimes you're more present at home, sometimes
- 23:31you're more focused on work. And both are OK.
- 23:34If this episode resonated with you, I would genuinely love it
- 23:38if you could share it with another mom or a creative parent
- 23:41who just might need to hear it. And if you haven't yet, please
