- 0:19for listening. Let's jump right in. Today's topic.
- 0:22A political party that already struggles with
- 0:25mainstream voters starts elevating candidates
- 0:27who openly call for abolishing major institutions,
- 0:31nationalizing key industries, and treating success
- 0:34itself like a moral failure, and then act surprised
- 0:37when the other side suddenly has a clearer contrast.
- 0:41Welcome to Right Now Hot Takes. I'm your host,
- 0:44Jim Rand. I love this country. Not because every
- 0:48idea that comes along is good, because the American
- 0:51system still lets ordinary people see the results
- 0:54of bad ideas and reject them. Right now, democratic
- 0:58socialists and their close allies are on a roll
- 1:01in democratic primaries. The Mom Donnie effect
- 1:04is real. Zoran Mamdani's win in New York City
- 1:08gave the hard left a model and a lot of confidence.
- 1:12Candidates are cross -endorsing each other, barnstorming
- 1:15together, and treating the Democratic Party infrastructure
- 1:18as something to capture rather than persuade.
- 1:22Look at Michigan. August 4 primary. Abdul El
- 1:25-Sayed is running for Senate. Bernie Sanders
- 1:28endorsed him. Medicare for all. Abolish ICE.
- 1:32Heavy criticism of Israel framed in the strongest
- 1:36possible terms. He is not formally DSA, but the
- 1:40DSA ground operation and socialist candidates
- 1:43are treating him like one of their own. At the
- 1:45same time, DSA backed Donovan McKinney is trying
- 1:49to knock off a sitting Democrat in a Detroit
- 1:52area house seat. Will Lawrence is running in
- 1:55another Michigan district with similar energy.
- 1:58Wisconsin has Francesca Hong, a DSA member and
- 2:01state representative in the open race for governor.
- 2:05New York already delivered multiple socialist
- 2:08primary wins. Colorado, Missouri, and other states
- 2:11have their own DSA or DSA -aligned challengers.
- 2:16This is not a fringe sideshow anymore. It is
- 2:19a coherent faction with money, organizers, and
- 2:22a clear story. The system is rigged, private
- 2:25enterprise is the enemy, and government must
- 2:27take over more of daily life. Here's the problem
- 2:31with that story. It has been tried repeatedly
- 2:34and the results are consistent. When you punish
- 2:37success and reward dependency, you get less success
- 2:40and more dependency. When you treat prices as
- 2:44moral failures instead of information, the shelves
- 2:47empty or the quality collapses. When you tell
- 2:50young people that the only path to dignity is
- 2:53through political redistribution instead of building
- 2:56something, you rob them of the very habits that
- 2:59create real mobility. Socialism in practice does
- 3:03not deliver the equality of outcomes it promises.
- 3:06It delivers equality of scarcity for most people
- 3:10and special access for the politically connected.
- 3:13That is not theory. That is the historical record
- 3:16from Venezuela to the old Eastern Bloc, to the
- 3:19repeated failures of heavy -handed industrial
- 3:22policy and rent control experiments in American
- 3:25cities. Hey everyone, if you're enjoying this
- 3:29podcast, I think you'll love another engaging
- 3:31series, The Odyssey. Short and Engaging Retellings,
- 3:35a full, vivid retelling of Homer's epic, one
- 3:37book at a time. Join us for dramatic storytelling,
- 3:41legendary adventures, and the ultimate tale of
- 3:43homecoming. The link is right there in the show
- 3:45notes. The Odyssey, Short and Engaging Retellings,
- 3:49go check it out. The new socialist candidates
- 3:53soft pedal the hard parts. They talk about affordability
- 3:57and working people. But the underlying diagnosis
- 4:00is the same. The problem is too much free enterprise,
- 4:04too much individual achievement, too little central
- 4:07direction. That diagnosis is wrong, and young
- 4:10people especially should reject it. You are being
- 4:13told that the reason housing is expensive, that
- 4:16the reason wages feel stuck, that the reason
- 4:19the future looks uncertain is because capitalism
- 4:22failed you. The more accurate explanation is
- 4:25usually a combination of bad policy, restricted
- 4:29supply, high regulation, and incentives that
- 4:32discourage work and investment. Socialist solutions
- 4:36double down on the exact incentives that created
- 4:38the problems. Medicare for all sounds compassionate,
- 4:42until you look at what happens to innovation,
- 4:45wait times, and the doctors who leave the system.
- 4:49Government grocery stores and price controls
- 4:51sound fair until the private stores that actually
- 4:54keep food on shelves get undercut and close.
- 4:58Abolishing enforcement agencies sounds radical
- 5:01and bold until the people who rely on order and
- 5:04predictable rules are the ones who pay the price.
- 5:07Scott Jennings has been saying it out loud. Crazy
- 5:11socialist candidates give Republicans a fighting
- 5:13chance. He is right. Not because Republicans
- 5:16are perfect, because a clear majority of Americans,
- 5:20including a lot of Democrats outside the activist
- 5:23core, still prefer a system that rewards effort
- 5:26over one that treats effort as suspect. This
- 5:30matters most for people in their 20s and 30s.
- 5:33You are the ones who will live longest with the
- 5:36consequences of the policies being sold right
- 5:38now. If the country moves further toward treating
- 5:41private success as a problem to be taxed away
- 5:44and redistributed, the growth, the jobs, and
- 5:48the upward mobility that previous generations
- 5:50took for granted become harder to find. If instead
- 5:54the country keeps the core American bargain,
- 5:57you can keep more of what you build, the future
- 5:59stays open. The socialist wave is not inevitable.
- 6:03It is a choice. And choices have results. Voters
- 6:07in Michigan, Wisconsin, and every other primary
- 6:10still get to decide whether the Democratic Party
- 6:13moves further into this territory or pulls back.
- 6:17Republicans get a clearer contrast than they
- 6:19have had in years, and the rest of us get another
- 6:22live demonstration of an old truth. Intentions
- 6:26are not the same as outcomes. Incentives are
- 6:29not optional. And free enterprise, for all its
- 6:32still produces more opportunity for ordinary
- 6:36people than any system that tries to engineer
- 6:39equality from the top down. America works best
- 6:43when it trusts people to build, compete, and
- 6:46keep the rewards of their effort. That idea is
- 6:49under open challenge again. The response is not
- 6:52panic, it is clarity. See the incentives, judge
- 6:55by results, and refuse to apologize for a system
- 6:59that has lifted more people out of poverty than
- 7:01any other in human history. This has been Right
- 7:05Now Hot Takes. I'm Jim Rand. See you next time!
