- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party. The bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:42Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:45Speaker 1: a top five soccer hooligan rockstar countdown, as inspired by
- 0:50Speaker 1: this week's full episode on the Hillsboro Disaster, Rod the Bod,
- 0:53Speaker 1: Sir Elton, the Cartel, some metal head tryhards, and more,
- 0:57Speaker 1: plus your voicemails, text emails, It's dms, and as always,
- 1:01Speaker 1: a whole lot of Rosie. This is the podcast for
- 1:04Speaker 1: the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know
- 1:07Speaker 1: that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All Right,
- 1:15Speaker 1: this goes let's get into it.
- 1:29Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So we're doing a little bit of sports this week
- 1:32Speaker 1: because the World Cup is among us. But you know,
- 1:36Speaker 1: sports through the lens of chaos and tragedy, which is
- 1:39Speaker 1: very disgraceland. Our Hillsboro tragedy episode is in the feed
- 1:44Speaker 1: for you guys. That's what prompted all this. This is
- 1:46Speaker 1: the story of the ninety seven innocent victims who died
- 1:50Speaker 1: at this soccer match back in nineteen eighty nine, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: the story about how they were escapegoaded by authorities. It's
- 1:58Speaker 1: just it's maddening. And I knew nothing about this story
- 2:03Speaker 1: when I first heard about it about five years ago
- 2:06Speaker 1: or so. Anyways, it's an incredible tale. I hope you
- 2:09Speaker 1: dig it. Check it out. It's in the feed right now.
- 2:11Speaker 1: We have it live now. Because of this time of year,
- 2:14Speaker 1: the World Cup is happening, NBA Finals are happening, Stanley
- 2:19Speaker 1: Cup Finals, the NCAA Baseball tournament. Sports is dominating our
- 2:24Speaker 1: attention at the moment, is what I'm saying. So I
- 2:26Speaker 1: thought I do a little high fidelity Rob Gordon Championship Final,
- 2:30Speaker 1: Top five Rock and Roll soccer crossover moments, with an emphasis,
- 2:34Speaker 1: of course, on the strange and bizarre and the unknown,
- 2:37Speaker 1: unknown at least to me and hopefully to you as well.
- 2:40Speaker 1: All right, so let's get into it. Number five, The
- 2:42Speaker 1: rock and roll myth that Rod Stewart and no, not
- 2:47Speaker 1: that myth that Rod Stewart was signed by a professional
- 2:51Speaker 1: soccer club by Brentford FC, Brentford Football Club back before
- 2:57Speaker 1: he became a famous rock star. The myth goes, as
- 3:01Speaker 1: the myth goes, Rod chose not to play professionally in
- 3:05Speaker 1: order to sing about hot legs and girls named Maggie May.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But that's not true, Okay. What is true is that
- 3:13Speaker 1: Rod tried out. It was his life's ambition as a
- 3:16Speaker 1: child up to that point to become a professional soccer player.
- 3:19Speaker 1: He tried out, but the team never called him back.
- 3:21Speaker 1: But this was believed forever, basically, and the story originated
- 3:26Speaker 1: with a young publicist back in the day when Rod's
- 3:28Speaker 1: career was just getting going, and the story was embellished
- 3:31Speaker 1: throughout the years people believed it. It was of course,
- 3:34Speaker 1: overshadowed by another Rod Stewart rock and roll myth that
- 3:37Speaker 1: I'm not going to get into here, and it wasn't
- 3:39Speaker 1: until Rod himself set the record straight in his twenty
- 3:42Speaker 1: twelve autobiography, which is really good, by the way, I
- 3:45Speaker 1: highly recommend it. I'm sure, however, that Rod was at
- 3:50Speaker 1: least pleased with the notion that people thought he could
- 3:54Speaker 1: have been a professional soccer player football player. I can't
- 3:57Speaker 1: say football. I have to say soccer. English listeners, forgive me.
- 4:02Speaker 1: European listeners, I should say, forgive me when I say soccer.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I know fully that you guys call it football, and
- 4:10Speaker 1: I'm just gonna say soccer because that's.
- 4:11Speaker 2: What we do over here. We have a whole other game.
- 4:13Speaker 1: You know this, all right, I'm not going to get
- 4:14Speaker 1: into that, Listen. I'd be pleased too if the world
- 4:17Speaker 1: thought that I, in addition to being a world famous
- 4:20Speaker 1: rock star, could also be a professional athlete. And you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: Rod kind of looks the part. I know, it's weird
- 4:28Speaker 1: to think of nineteen seventies Rod Stewart as a professional athlete,
- 4:33Speaker 1: a professional anything besides a rock star, based on the
- 4:36Speaker 1: whole peacock attire and the you know, the hair, all that,
- 4:40Speaker 1: But if you look at seventies photos of him playing soccer,
- 4:44Speaker 1: he kind of looks great. He looks the part. I
- 4:47Speaker 1: gotta say, it's a believable story, but it's not true,
- 4:51Speaker 1: all right. Number four? Listen, what's up with the dudes
- 4:55Speaker 1: an Iron Maiden. I swear they're like superhumans or something.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Singer Bruce Dickinson literally flies Iron Maiden in their crew
- 5:06Speaker 1: from gig to gig in a massive Boeing seven forty
- 5:10Speaker 1: seven jumbo jet. This isn't like John F. Kennedy Junior
- 5:13Speaker 1: up there in a little prop playing a jumbo jet.
- 5:16Speaker 1: All right. Bruce Dickinson's also vegan. He's I think two
- 5:21Speaker 1: hundred and seventy six years old and still looks thirty three.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I think he's straight edge and he was once ranked
- 5:28Speaker 1: top twenty in the UK as a fencer, which I'm
- 5:31Speaker 1: told is a sport. But I'm not here to talk
- 5:34Speaker 1: about fencing. I'm here to talk about Steve Harris, iron
- 5:36Speaker 1: Man's bass player. And in addition to inventing his own
- 5:41Speaker 1: style of bass playing that has been aped by tons
- 5:45Speaker 1: of heavy metal bass guitarists over the years, Steve Harris,
- 5:49Speaker 1: bass player for Iron Maiden, was also scouted as a
- 5:52Speaker 1: kid by legendary footballer Wally Saint Pierre and signed to
- 5:57Speaker 1: west Ham United signed it into their youth program. Anyways,
- 6:00Speaker 1: now Steve Harris, unlike Rod Stewart, he actually did get
- 6:04Speaker 1: the call and he chose to play rock and roll instead.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Still supports west Ham United to this day. Pretty cool,
- 6:12Speaker 1: all right, Number three, This is the one I really
- 6:14Speaker 1: want to talk about. Nineteen ninety six great year, so
- 6:18Speaker 1: called swaggiest game of soccer ever was played in East
- 6:23Speaker 1: London at a charity event during the height of britpop
- 6:26Speaker 1: and more specifically, during the height of the Oasis Blur
- 6:30Speaker 1: battle for britpop supremacy. They literally called it the Battle
- 6:34Speaker 1: of Britpop. We'll get into the mechanics of all that,
- 6:37Speaker 1: what that was in the exclusive section of this after party,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and more into the Oasis and Blur a rivalry than
- 6:42Speaker 1: we're going to do right here. Go to disgracempod dot
- 6:45Speaker 1: com to sign up, get that exclusive content, get other
- 6:48Speaker 1: exclusive content, get ad free content, all that, All right,
- 6:51Speaker 1: disgraceimpod dot com. That conversation's coming up later. But back
- 6:54Speaker 1: to this one right here again. The battle for britpop supremacy. Now,
- 7:00Speaker 1: the battle, you might be surprised to learn, was won
- 7:03Speaker 1: by Blur with their nineteen ninety five chart dominance of
- 7:08Speaker 1: their single country House not Country Home. Country House reigning
- 7:13Speaker 1: supreme over the Oasis single roll with it. However, the war,
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Britpop war, was ultimately won by Oasis with their
- 7:21Speaker 1: recent dominance, as witnessed by their twenty twenty five unprecedented
- 7:25Speaker 1: cultural and commercial resurgence to the New Tour all that stuff.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You guys know all about that, But back in nineteen
- 7:30Speaker 1: ninety six, it was still undetermined which of these two
- 7:34Speaker 1: Britpop rivals was going to reign supreme, and no one
- 7:39Speaker 1: knew who was going to reign supreme on the soccer field.
- 7:42Speaker 1: On the pitch as they say, Okay, two celebrity teams
- 7:45Speaker 1: pulled together to bang balls out on the field and
- 7:48Speaker 1: one team was captained by Damon Alburn from Blur and
- 7:51Speaker 1: the other team was captained by Liam Gallagher from Oasis.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It should be mentioned that Damon is a supporter of
- 7:57Speaker 1: Chelsea and Liam is a support of Man City. On
- 8:02Speaker 1: the field that day a ton of drama, as you
- 8:05Speaker 1: can guess, anytime you have Liam Gallagher and Damon from
- 8:09Speaker 1: Blur in the same vicinity, there's gonna be drama. Most
- 8:12Speaker 1: of it, however, was brought on by Liam. He was
- 8:14Speaker 1: in Damon's face almost the entire time, physically all over
- 8:18Speaker 1: them all game. At one point he tried pulling down
- 8:20Speaker 1: his pants. At another point in the middle of the game,
- 8:24Speaker 1: he took a smoke smoke break Liam did on the field.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That makes sense. Chuck to Chuck to cannabar at a reporter,
- 8:29Speaker 1: that makes sense as well. Just genius Gallagher who will
- 8:33Speaker 1: get in field work. And of course these guys they
- 8:36Speaker 1: look great the entire time. Pictures of this event are fascinating,
- 8:41Speaker 1: just fascinating. They're awesome. You can tell Damon's taking it
- 8:45Speaker 1: kind of seriously. He's kind of dressed in his own
- 8:47Speaker 1: little uni and then you got you got Liam who's
- 8:51Speaker 1: in a in a cagle on the field. Fucking amazing.
- 8:56Speaker 1: It's so good Damon's team won and Liam of was
- 9:00Speaker 1: not happy about that. You can hear, like I said,
- 9:04Speaker 1: you can hear about the Battle of Pop more about
- 9:06Speaker 1: that with Zeth and I in the exclusive section of
- 9:08Speaker 1: this after party Disgrace sampod dot com to sign up.
- 9:11Speaker 1: But if you want to hear more about this is fascinating.
- 9:13Speaker 1: If you want to hear more about how soccer fight songs, okay,
- 9:17Speaker 1: the big stadium chance, If you want to hear more
- 9:20Speaker 1: about how that music directly inspired the pop mastery of Oasis.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You got to check out our Oasis episodes in our archive.
- 9:29Speaker 1: All right, okay, next number two on our Rob Gordon
- 9:33Speaker 1: Championship Vinyl list of soccer. What are we doing? Soccer
- 9:38Speaker 1: rock and roll madness? Number two? This one is the
- 9:40Speaker 1: weirdest and I've largely ignored stories in my podcasting career
- 9:47Speaker 1: about Mexican cartels getting involved in the music industry sports
- 9:53Speaker 1: world as well, but I am blown away at the
- 9:57Speaker 1: lengths that the cartels go to to grow their criminal enterprises.
- 10:02Speaker 1: In twenty seventeen, the United States Department United States Treasury
- 10:07Speaker 1: Department revealed that one professional soccer player, Mexican player Rafael Marquez,
- 10:13Speaker 1: was being used along with a popular Mexican musician, Julio Alvarez,
- 10:18Speaker 1: to launder money for one of the cartels. Not just
- 10:21Speaker 1: like just to match. We'll get to this in a second.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Marquez played for Barcelona and was the captain of the
- 10:31Speaker 1: Mexican national team. Okay, so just imagine that you work
- 10:35Speaker 1: your whole life to get where you are, the literal
- 10:38Speaker 1: top of the game of your game, and one day
- 10:42Speaker 1: a violent drug trafficker comes knocking and he tells you
- 10:45Speaker 1: that you're going to help him launder his truckloads of
- 10:48Speaker 1: money by buying and holding expensive assets for him, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: then you get popped by the Feds and your career
- 10:56Speaker 1: is ruined. Sort of not really, still yikes. Same goes
- 11:02Speaker 1: for the musician here. And that's almost a little more
- 11:05Speaker 1: understandable that a musician would get caught up in kind
- 11:08Speaker 1: of a racket with a cartel, given that the history
- 11:11Speaker 1: of the music business it's so closely related to the
- 11:14Speaker 1: crime business. But sports seems a little more pure, I guess. Anyways,
- 11:18Speaker 1: Marquez the player here, despite the drug cartel allegations, somehow
- 11:24Speaker 1: cleared his name with Mexican authorities. I'm putting quotes around authorities,
- 11:29Speaker 1: and built a career as a coach and is now,
- 11:33Speaker 1: incredibly to this day, the head coach of the Mexican
- 11:36Speaker 1: national team. There's a lot I could say about this
- 11:39Speaker 1: story that I'm not saying. You can kind of read
- 11:40Speaker 1: between the lines here, and all the info is out
- 11:43Speaker 1: there are and easy to find if you're interested. Okay,
- 11:46Speaker 1: Number one, Now, I knew the Rod Stewart story here.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I knew about the Oasis and Blur match, I knew
- 11:53Speaker 1: about Iron maiden Steve Harris. I knew that he was
- 11:56Speaker 1: some kind of child savant. I should say, I didn't
- 11:57Speaker 1: quite know the whole soccer connection, and I'm not surprised
- 12:01Speaker 1: about the Mexican cartel infiltrating the world of soccer and
- 12:04Speaker 1: music through players and musicians. But somehow, in all of
- 12:10Speaker 1: my music history research, I never came across the fact
- 12:14Speaker 1: that Elton John not only owned one, but two professional
- 12:19Speaker 1: soccer clubs, Watford FC and the Los Angeles as Techs.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Even more important is the fact that Elton John brought
- 12:30Speaker 1: this football club, Watford. Am I saying that correctly? I'm
- 12:33Speaker 1: probably not. I apologize to the good people of Watford
- 12:36Speaker 1: wherever that is. He brought this football club back from
- 12:39Speaker 1: financial and competitive ruin lowest of the fourth Division, ranked
- 12:44Speaker 1: dead last ninety two of ninety two, all the way
- 12:46Speaker 1: to the top tier of the first Basically, Elton John
- 12:49Speaker 1: did what Ryan Reynolds and Rob from Always Sonny and
- 12:54Speaker 1: Philadelphia did with Wrexham. Elton John already did it. It's
- 12:59Speaker 1: just that there wasn't a Hulu back then when he
- 13:01Speaker 1: did it, so they didn't make a TV show about it.
- 13:03Speaker 1: But you know what's wild, I thought of this this
- 13:06Speaker 1: morning when I when I came across this fact. When
- 13:10Speaker 1: I interviewed Elton John back in twenty nineteen, it was
- 13:13Speaker 1: May of twenty nineteen, and he asked me. It was
- 13:16Speaker 1: sort of like after the interview was done, and he
- 13:19Speaker 1: asked me where I was from, and I told him Boston,
- 13:22Speaker 1: and he got really animated and excited. He wanted it.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I thought, this is hysterical. He started talking to me
- 13:28Speaker 1: about the Boston Bruins because they were in the Stanley
- 13:32Speaker 1: Cup at that moment, and he was just really animated
- 13:38Speaker 1: about the success of Boston sports and wanted to know
- 13:42Speaker 1: what it was like to be a Boston sports fan crazy.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And this is because, like I said, the Bruins were
- 13:47Speaker 1: in the Stanley Cup at that moment. They lost the Blues.
- 13:51Speaker 1: The Celtics were in the Eastern Conference Finals. I think
- 13:57Speaker 1: they had just lost to Cleveland. I think that was
- 14:00Speaker 1: Lebron's Cavaliers. I think it was. But a couple months earlier,
- 14:04Speaker 1: the Patriots had won the Super Bowl. They'd beaten the Rams,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and that was in January, and a couple months before that,
- 14:11Speaker 1: in October early November, the Red Sox had won the
- 14:14Speaker 1: World Series. It's this fascinating to think that out there
- 14:18Speaker 1: as a Boston sports fan, that you know, Elton John
- 14:21Speaker 1: is sitting out there somewhere, you know, thinking about all
- 14:25Speaker 1: the success that we are having as Boston sports fans.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Really blew my mind. And I am so pissed off
- 14:32Speaker 1: at myself for not knowing this history then about Elton
- 14:36Speaker 1: John and the football team that he still owns a
- 14:40Speaker 1: piece of. He's not running the team anymore with his buddy,
- 14:43Speaker 1: but that he actually he actually did what again, what
- 14:46Speaker 1: Ryan Reynolds and Rob from Always Sunny are celebrated for doing.
- 14:52Speaker 1: It's like we've almost completely forgotten about this. It's not
- 14:55Speaker 1: I guess because Elton John has done so much. Maybe
- 14:58Speaker 1: it's like, oh, yeah, he did this thing too, But
- 15:01Speaker 1: I don't know. I find it completely fascinating. Anyways, there's
- 15:03Speaker 1: a little rock and roll in soccer history for you guys. Anyways,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I can find it completely fascinating, and I'm a little
- 15:10Speaker 1: upset at myself that I wasn't able to bring that
- 15:12Speaker 1: up with Elton John in the moment and talk to
- 15:16Speaker 1: him about it and get his perspective of what that
- 15:18Speaker 1: would have been like. You know, that's a fascinating perspective.
- 15:21Speaker 1: So few people own and guide the success of professional
- 15:26Speaker 1: sports teams, never mind while also being one of the
- 15:30Speaker 1: biggest pop stars on the planet in the history of
- 15:32Speaker 1: the world. Actually, I would have loved that. I would
- 15:34Speaker 1: have loved to have asked him what that was like.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And I didn't get the chance because of my own ignorance,
- 15:39Speaker 1: And yeah, bums me out a little bit, all right. Anyways,
- 15:42Speaker 1: there's a little rock and roll in soccer history for
- 15:45Speaker 1: you guys for World Cup week here in honor as
- 15:48Speaker 1: I said of the Hillsboro disaster episode in your feeds.
- 15:51Speaker 1: This week, speaking of disasters, we have our Marilyn Manson
- 15:54Speaker 1: archive episode coming in the rewind slot this week. That's
- 15:57Speaker 1: dropping right after this, So don't go anywhere. We still
- 16:01Speaker 1: had a lot of after parties, so don't go anywhere.
- 16:03Speaker 1: But you know, you know the Manson story. People ask
- 16:06Speaker 1: me all the time, where do you get these crazy stories?
- 16:09Speaker 1: How do you know what these rock stars are up to?
- 16:11Speaker 1: And I often tell them about how well, you know,
- 16:14Speaker 1: it's all out there. Many of them even put this
- 16:17Speaker 1: information out there themselves. This guy, this fucking guy, he
- 16:23Speaker 1: wrote it all down in his book seriously about how
- 16:27Speaker 1: he was going to commit murder, like in detail how
- 16:31Speaker 1: he was going to pull off the crime. You know,
- 16:34Speaker 1: how he degraded women, fans, the abuse, the nihilism, the inhumanity.
- 16:38Speaker 1: It's all there in his book. All that is in
- 16:40Speaker 1: Marilyn Manson's autobiography. So when accusations flooded into the public
- 16:46Speaker 1: about Manson's treatment of the women in his life a
- 16:48Speaker 1: couple of years ago, none of it was surprising. Actually
- 16:50Speaker 1: that's not true. It was surprising. Confounding is a better
- 16:54Speaker 1: word than surprising. Anyhow, check out this episode if you
- 16:57Speaker 1: have not already, and actually even if you have checked
- 16:59Speaker 1: it out, even if you have listened, listen again.
- 17:02Speaker 2: You'll learn more.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You'll pick up more details, and this episode will not
- 17:06Speaker 1: fail to shock you even on second listen. Okay, after
- 17:09Speaker 1: Marilyn Manson, next week we got a new episode in
- 17:12Speaker 1: the Feed on George Jones, one of my favorite singers
- 17:15Speaker 1: of all time, not just my favorite country singers, one
- 17:18Speaker 1: of my favorite singers period. I hear George's voice and
- 17:22Speaker 1: I just stop what I'm doing and I listen. George
- 17:25Speaker 1: had one of the greatest voices ever. So when you're
- 17:28Speaker 1: listening to this episode, be thinking about which singers do
- 17:30Speaker 1: it for you the most. Who's got that voice that
- 17:32Speaker 1: just stops you in your tracks, that can bring you
- 17:35Speaker 1: to tears, that can make you feel things that you
- 17:37Speaker 1: don't normally feel. All Right, that's gonna be the question
- 17:40Speaker 1: of the week. Six one, seven, nine oh six, six,
- 17:43Speaker 1: six three eight. Give us a call, send us a text,
- 17:46Speaker 1: let us know your answer. You might hear yourself on
- 17:48Speaker 1: the after party. Now, I'm really excited about these next
- 17:52Speaker 1: few episodes we got coming at the beginning of the
- 17:54Speaker 1: summer this year. The Sonic Youth episode we have coming
- 17:58Speaker 1: is a banger to be all bangers, and it is
- 18:02Speaker 1: super true crime. It's not only about Thurston Moore and
- 18:06Speaker 1: the badassness of Kim Gordon and the awesomeness of Steve
- 18:09Speaker 1: Shelley and Lee Ronaldo and Thurston and Kim's relationship. It's
- 18:14Speaker 1: about the true crime story that inspired the cover of
- 18:18Speaker 1: Sonic Youse Goo, A story with two of the coolest
- 18:22Speaker 1: rock and roll heroes that nobody knows about at the
- 18:25Speaker 1: center of it. A story about the shocking Moore's murders. Now,
- 18:28Speaker 1: on the subject of shock, we are soon bringing you
- 18:32Speaker 1: our heavily requested episode on Wendy Oh Williams. You're like,
- 18:35Speaker 1: oh cool, maybe I'll check that out. Wendy O. Williams,
- 18:39Speaker 1: she's one with the duc Take nipples and the chainsaw,
- 18:41Speaker 1: who dated Lemme from Motorhead all that. Yes, it's about
- 18:44Speaker 1: all that. Of course, that's kind of the stuff I
- 18:47Speaker 1: knew about her before we got into this episode and
- 18:49Speaker 1: putting it together for you guys. But I did not
- 18:51Speaker 1: understand the emotion and creative heartbreak at the heart of
- 18:55Speaker 1: Wendy O. Williams's story. It is a heavy one, and
- 18:59Speaker 1: it's as much about the costs and the soul sucking
- 19:02Speaker 1: sometimes I should say, the sometimes soul sucking nature of
- 19:06Speaker 1: trying to make it in this world as a committed artist,
- 19:09Speaker 1: as it is about shock and the stuff that you
- 19:11Speaker 1: would think it would be about when we're talking about
- 19:12Speaker 1: Wendy Williams, it's also about New York and the seventies.
- 19:15Speaker 2: So it's right up our asle.
- 19:16Speaker 1: You're gonna dig it, okay, So little unexpected preview of episodes.
- 19:20Speaker 1: We are coming up here in Disgraceland this summer, coming
- 19:23Speaker 1: up right after this. Your voicemails, text DMS emails and more.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I'll be back in the flash, all right, guys, we
- 19:46Speaker 3: are back six one seven, nine oh six sixty six
- 19:49Speaker 3: three eight.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I'm in the phone booth. It's the one across the hall.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I'm hanging on the telephone with you. Guys. Take your calls.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I want to kind of go all over the map today,
- 19:58Speaker 1: try to get to some folks you may have fell
- 20:01Speaker 1: through the cracks with their voicemails and their texts and
- 20:05Speaker 1: really kind of just no agenda. We can talk about
- 20:09Speaker 1: anything that we've been talking about over the last few weeks,
- 20:11Speaker 1: last few months. Let's go to the seven to one nine.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Where's that Colorado? This is from Sally.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Hi.
- 20:20Speaker 4: This is Sally from Colorado. I'm a little behind because
- 20:24Speaker 4: I just became a paid member. So I'm just now
- 20:27Speaker 4: listening to your after party about the list of the
- 20:31Speaker 4: thirty most.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Best writers, the songwriters.
- 20:36Speaker 4: That are still alive, and I just wanted to mention
- 20:39Speaker 4: that I think there's two things that are important. One,
- 20:41Speaker 4: I think who you think is missing has a lot
- 20:44Speaker 4: to do with whether you're a guy or girl. So
- 20:46Speaker 4: that's number one. And number two. As much as you
- 20:48Speaker 4: may not like Diane Warren, Diane Warren, I believe holds
- 20:53Speaker 4: the record for being nominated for the most Oscars and
- 20:56Speaker 4: not winning one. Okay, so you know, like eighteen or
- 21:01Speaker 4: nineteen times. So there's a reason she's on the list.
- 21:04Speaker 4: You mean, I like her, but there's a reason she's
- 21:06Speaker 4: on the list. Your show is uh may zing. I
- 21:10Speaker 4: can't even tell you how excited I am my found it.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Y'all, have a great day.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Bye, Sally, Thank you for your call. I was just
- 21:17Speaker 1: having some fun with Diane Warren. Not my cup of tea,
- 21:19Speaker 1: you know, that big pop stuff. But I completely hear you.
- 21:23Speaker 1: You said nominated for the most Oscars. I think you
- 21:25Speaker 1: meant nominated for the most Grammys, right, I think so
- 21:30Speaker 1: she's basically like the Suzanne Lucci. Was that that woman's name,
- 21:35Speaker 1: the soap opera star who would get nominated every year
- 21:39Speaker 1: or not win. And I think, yeah, Diane Warren being
- 21:43Speaker 1: nominated that many times, having that kind of impact that
- 21:45Speaker 1: she's had, despite my personal taste, you're absolutely right, deserves
- 21:49Speaker 1: a spot on the list. So I hear you, Sally,
- 21:51Speaker 1: and thank you for the kind words about the show
- 21:53Speaker 1: as well. Appreciate you. Appreciate the new listeners for sure.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Appreciate the older listeners as well, who have been here
- 21:59Speaker 1: since back in the day, Let's go to where are
- 22:02Speaker 1: we going to go here? Let's go to the three
- 22:05Speaker 1: eighty five and talk a little Food Fighters.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Hey, Jake, big fan, think about Taylor Hawkins. I've been
- 22:14Speaker 5: a big fan of Food Fighters for a really long time.
- 22:17Speaker 5: I've loved their music videos. I've loved every album, Deep
- 22:20Speaker 5: Cuts and all that blah blah and everything. And I
- 22:22Speaker 5: watched the documentary on HBO. They bought that album, and
- 22:26Speaker 5: I did everything short of see them. I never got
- 22:30Speaker 5: to see them. I never got to see Taylor, and
- 22:34Speaker 5: as a big fan of the Food Fighters, it was
- 22:37Speaker 5: really disappointing. And I delved deeper into their stuff, and
- 22:40Speaker 5: I gotta tell you, the reason Taylor Hawkins died was
- 22:44Speaker 5: pretty boring. It is drugs. That's it. That's my guess,
- 22:48Speaker 5: you know, just of all the things they did. I mean,
- 22:51Speaker 5: they did all the drugs, and they got odd and
- 22:54Speaker 5: they sent to the hospital, and then they made a
- 22:56Speaker 5: documentary about themselves. Are at Peace?
- 23:00Speaker 1: Threade five? Appreciate the call, And I got to quibble
- 23:04Speaker 1: a little bit. I just my thinking here on the
- 23:08Speaker 1: he died from drugs, reasoning, why wouldn't they just say that?
- 23:13Speaker 1: And again the reaction I think that you would give
- 23:16Speaker 1: me if we were having a two way convo here
- 23:18Speaker 1: in real life, you'd say, well, you know, they didn't
- 23:23Speaker 1: want his kids to know, his kids to know, they
- 23:25Speaker 1: want his family to you know, have to deal with
- 23:28Speaker 1: whatever the ramifications are, public opinion, blah blah blah. But
- 23:34Speaker 1: we live in a world where addiction is more understood
- 23:40Speaker 1: than it ever has been before. It's certainly more socially
- 23:44Speaker 1: acceptable as a disease and no longer seen as something
- 23:49Speaker 1: that you know, as the mark of somebody who's weak
- 23:52Speaker 1: or a personality defect or anything like that. And it
- 23:54Speaker 1: just makes me think that, you know, if it were
- 23:56Speaker 1: a drug overdose, even if it were accident, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 1: even if he was like smoking a joint and have
- 24:03Speaker 1: like fentanyl honor or something, if that were the case,
- 24:06Speaker 1: they would say that. But they just have not. And
- 24:10Speaker 1: in the absence of a reason, there has to be
- 24:15Speaker 1: a different reason. I guess, I don't know. I don't know.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Six one seven, nine oh six sixty six three eight.
- 24:20Speaker 1: You got any more theories on the Foo fighters, Hit
- 24:22Speaker 1: us up you want to talk about anything at all,
- 24:23Speaker 1: Hit us up voicemail and text nine to seven, Ozer
- 24:27Speaker 1: writes in on a popular popular subject. Here cover songs
- 24:31Speaker 1: on the disgrace Sand question of unlikely covers. I know
- 24:33Speaker 1: I'm late, but run River North cover of mister Bright's
- 24:37Speaker 1: Side is amazing. Starts as a kind of coffee shop cover,
- 24:40Speaker 1: but then turns into an amazing string arrangement and some
- 24:43Speaker 1: great harmonies. It's beautiful. I think there's a lot of
- 24:46Speaker 1: covers of killer songs because they're the melodies are epic
- 24:51Speaker 1: and scope and they just they lend themselves to great interpretations.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Thank you for the recommendation here. Nine to seven zero,
- 24:59Speaker 1: run River North. I never heard of him, but I
- 25:00Speaker 1: will check it out. My son, my youngest, is obsessed
- 25:03Speaker 1: with this song right now, so I'll look it up
- 25:06Speaker 1: and I'll play it for him. Seven to seven zero
- 25:09Speaker 1: Rights and Hey, Jake, it's Jake. The Sopranos is my
- 25:12Speaker 1: favorite show of all time. And I had an important note.
- 25:16Speaker 1: When Chrissy and Tony Chrissy are driving and listening to
- 25:20Speaker 1: the Roger Waters live version of Comfortably Numb. They're listening
- 25:24Speaker 1: to it off of the Departed soundtrack, which I've always
- 25:28Speaker 1: found to be very interesting, especially considering the episode air
- 25:31Speaker 1: just a year after the movie was released. There's also
- 25:35Speaker 1: overlap between the two, as armand Garo plays Coco and
- 25:39Speaker 1: Sopranos and plays one of the prominence gangsters who gets
- 25:42Speaker 1: this ass kicked by Billy Costigan in the Departed. Love
- 25:45Speaker 1: the show, Keep up the great work, Rock a Rolla.
- 25:48Speaker 1: First of all, the guy who plays Coco is one
- 25:52Speaker 1: of the most frightening dudes to ever come on the
- 25:55Speaker 1: screen in Sopranos, and I do record I do remember
- 26:00Speaker 1: him from Departed as well. Yeah, there's some crazy crossover there.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I just talked about this. I can't tell if your
- 26:05Speaker 1: text is if you're writing me in relation to what
- 26:08Speaker 1: we were just talking about, or if this is just coincidental.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I did not mention that the actual CD that Chris
- 26:17Speaker 1: Malta Sante is listening to in that scene in the
- 26:21Speaker 1: Kennedy and Heidi episode. Not going to spoil it. I
- 26:24Speaker 1: did not mention that it was a Departed soundtrack that
- 26:26Speaker 1: he's listening to, because I forgot and he reminded me.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And I think he says something about it too, doesn't he.
- 26:32Speaker 1: I think he says something about the soundtrack. I don't know, Jake,
- 26:36Speaker 1: let me know. Six one seven nine oh six six
- 26:39Speaker 1: six three eight Manny Bravo from the seven three to
- 26:42Speaker 1: two in the Rock and Roll Asbury Park, New Jersey
- 26:45Speaker 1: writes in I'm so glad that you were talking about
- 26:47Speaker 1: Widow's Bay on Apple TV. It's such a great show.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I've been telling everyone about it. Each character has done
- 26:51Speaker 1: so well with a little background on each stories of
- 26:54Speaker 1: the road. Yeah, you're right, you're right, Manny. Was I
- 26:57Speaker 1: talking about Widows Bang? Or was Zeth in the Rap Party?
- 27:00Speaker 1: I can't remember. Back to the Sopranos with the five
- 27:02Speaker 1: six to two, we might have some clarity on this
- 27:05Speaker 1: on this Departed issue.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Here.
- 27:07Speaker 1: This one's from Celeste. She writes in, Hey Jake, I'm
- 27:09Speaker 1: a Sopranos super fan and I had to drop a line.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Christopher was playing the soundtrack from The Departed for Tony.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Christopher comments about how bad the sound system in his car.
- 27:18Speaker 1: It is fiddling with it. He takes his eyes off
- 27:20Speaker 1: the road, and the rest is history. Hm hmm ps.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Thanks for the recommendation on DTF Saint Louis. I only
- 27:29Speaker 1: checked it out because you said it was good, Celeste.
- 27:31Speaker 1: You You're welcome there, Celeste. I wonder if we're getting
- 27:34Speaker 1: other dtfs. The title makes me think we are a
- 27:37Speaker 1: DTF Saint Louis. Maybe they're gonna do like a DTF Chicago,
- 27:40Speaker 1: DTF Boston. I'd be into that. This one comes from
- 27:44Speaker 1: the five three. Hello, new listener, Really love your podcast Disgraceland.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Just got done listening to the Kanye episode about bipolar
- 27:53Speaker 1: one disorder, and it really resonated with me because my
- 27:56Speaker 1: mom and my brother both suffer from bipolar disord order.
- 28:00Speaker 1: One suffers from bipolar two and the other from bipolar one,
- 28:03Speaker 1: just like Kanye, and I will say his depiction of
- 28:06Speaker 1: a manic episode is a thousand percent accurate. My brother
- 28:10Speaker 1: will be okay one day, and then the next he
- 28:12Speaker 1: will think he is the next Messiah and that he
- 28:15Speaker 1: has to build the next Kingdom of God. Sorry for
- 28:18Speaker 1: the long text, but if Kanye really is telling the
- 28:20Speaker 1: truth about having bipolar one disorder, I feel for him.
- 28:24Speaker 1: The saddest part is they don't think anything's wrong with them,
- 28:27Speaker 1: and then they think that once they're on medication and
- 28:29Speaker 1: everything's normal, they can just stop taking it and things
- 28:32Speaker 1: will stay the same. Appreciate the text five h three.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I've experienced with this in my family as well, with
- 28:37Speaker 1: my grandmother and my sister and appreciate the text. Yeah,
- 28:43Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know about Kanye. It's a
- 28:46Speaker 1: really hard thing to talk about. It's a really hard
- 28:48Speaker 1: thing to think about. I hope somebody reads a great
- 28:50Speaker 1: book one day. All right, guy six one seven nine
- 28:52Speaker 1: o six six sixty three eight. Voicemail and text. You
- 28:54Speaker 1: want to hit me up anything, have at it. Now's
- 28:56Speaker 1: a good time. I'm going on vacation and going on
- 29:02Speaker 1: vacation for two weeks, so I'm banging out these after
- 29:05Speaker 1: party episodes. It's a good time to get in touch.
- 29:08Speaker 1: You might hear yourself. Six one seven nine oh six
- 29:10Speaker 1: sixty sixty three eight. But you gotta do it soon,
- 29:11Speaker 1: all right, hit me up voicemail on text. Le'll be
- 29:13Speaker 1: back right after this with more of you emails, dms,
- 29:16Speaker 1: more coming up. All right, we are back to Scraceham
- 29:27Speaker 1: pod at gmail dot com. I gotta clean something up here.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I made a little mistake in that John Lennon episode,
- 29:31Speaker 1: which has been live for a while now. We released
- 29:33Speaker 1: it back into the wild with our rewind this past week.
- 29:37Speaker 1: This email comes from Leslie Forton, who points out that hey,
- 29:41Speaker 1: the Freedom Rally concert for John Sinclair in your John
- 29:44Speaker 1: Lennon episode was not at Pontiac Stadium. I lived in
- 29:47Speaker 1: Pontiac at the time and never heard of such a place.
- 29:49Speaker 1: It was at Chrysler Arena in Ann Arbor at the
- 29:54Speaker 1: University of Michigan. Now, Leslie, thank you for this. I
- 29:58Speaker 1: messed up. I'm not trying to cast blame elsewhere, but
- 30:02Speaker 1: I wonder if I read a mistake and depiction of
- 30:05Speaker 1: this venue in my research, or if my brain just
- 30:09Speaker 1: read Pontiac excuse me, Red Chrysler, and then I voiced Pontiac.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Either or possible. I'm guessing it's the latter. I'm guessing
- 30:18Speaker 1: that's what happened my brain. Just fritz there. I apologize
- 30:21Speaker 1: and I appreciate you pointing this out. We got to
- 30:24Speaker 1: clean that up and that is something that we will
- 30:27Speaker 1: do shortly. Disgrace iPod at gmail dot com. I want
- 30:31Speaker 1: to thank artist Faulkner. Listener from doesn't say Here, but
- 30:35Speaker 1: he sends along a video with Henry Rowlands talking about
- 30:38Speaker 1: the new release from the Cramps. There's a new Cramps
- 30:41Speaker 1: release and I don't know what the hell that is,
- 30:44Speaker 1: but we got to figure it out. I'm dig into
- 30:46Speaker 1: this rollin video. Thank you artists, appreciate you Emily L writes, ining, Hey,
- 30:51Speaker 1: you asked if there is something in music history. When
- 30:54Speaker 1: we hear about it, it just makes us angry. Well, I'm
- 30:57Speaker 1: gonna have to go with Live Nation and Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster
- 31:00Speaker 1: has been known to cheat Live steel and rip us
- 31:02Speaker 1: off for years and get away with it. Live Nation
- 31:04Speaker 1: has lied their way out of so many lawsuits and
- 31:07Speaker 1: gets away with murder. These are two of the most
- 31:10Speaker 1: evil corporations right now in the music gedust here. Absolutely right, Emily,
- 31:14Speaker 1: I do not disagree. It's maddening. I love how Jack
- 31:17Speaker 1: Antonov is at the front of this conversation. I don't understand.
- 31:22Speaker 1: This is just insane. It's I don't even like getting
- 31:25Speaker 1: into it because it's one of those things I try.
- 31:26Speaker 1: I'm really hard as I'm getting older to not focus
- 31:29Speaker 1: on things that are making me angry. This is this
- 31:32Speaker 1: is one of a man right up there, Disgrace sampod
- 31:35Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. We want to hit us up.
- 31:37Speaker 1: We'll entertain any topic. Actually that's not true. Make it
- 31:40Speaker 1: about music and or a true crime. Sure fire away
- 31:44Speaker 1: to hear your email read all right, listen. Earlier somebody
- 31:47Speaker 1: had mentioned that I recommended what was it, DTF Saint
- 31:51Speaker 1: Louis as another. Somebody else mentioned another recommendation I can't
- 31:55Speaker 1: remember it was. If you want recommendations for me on
- 31:58Speaker 1: the regular, they're happening in the Hollywood Feed in the
- 32:00Speaker 1: Wrap Party episode where myself and Zeth Lundy each week
- 32:04Speaker 1: give you recommendations. I give you music recommendations, Zeth gives
- 32:07Speaker 1: you film recommendations. Usually they're centered around some sort of crime.
- 32:10Speaker 1: They're almost always centered around whatever that week's Hollywood and
- 32:14Speaker 1: crime subject is that we're talking about in Hollywood Land.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Make sure you are subscribed to the Hollywoodland Podcast if
- 32:21Speaker 1: you're not all ready. Also doctor Lundi and I. He's
- 32:25Speaker 1: not only my doctor, he's also my attorney. Zeth and
- 32:28Speaker 1: I are talking music in films, great soundtracks, great music supervision,
- 32:34Speaker 1: our favorite films with the best music in our video podcast.

- 33:15Speaker 1: All right, we are back. Let's recap. We talked about
- 33:17Speaker 1: Iron Maiden today. Don't have an episode on Iron Maiden.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I'd love to research one, though. They're a band that
- 33:24Speaker 1: I there's parts of their catalog that I really love
- 33:28Speaker 1: and parts I'm not interested in, but I am interested
- 33:30Speaker 1: in the band in their history. We talked about Rod
- 33:33Speaker 1: Stewart and remarkably, we don't have a Rod Stewart episode either.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Of course, we mentioned Oasis. Check out those Oasis episodes
- 33:40Speaker 1: in our archive. Matt's gonna have episode information in the
- 33:45Speaker 1: show notes section of this after party to help you
- 33:47Speaker 1: easily navigate to our Oasis episodes. It's that time. We've
- 33:51Speaker 1: come to the end of another after party. I gotta
- 33:53Speaker 1: get out of here, so let's recap real quick, shall we.

- 34:26Speaker 1: Number six six one seven nine oh six six six
- 34:28Speaker 1: three eight. Your voice keeps us sticking into the dark
- 34:30Speaker 1: corners of music history, so keep calling, texting giving us
- 34:33Speaker 1: your answers to this week's question of the week or
- 34:35Speaker 1: to whatever else you want to talk about. Number seven.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Don't forget disc goes. This isn't just content. It's a community,
- 34:40Speaker 1: a community the obsessed, and no one cares about music, books,
- 34:43Speaker 1: records and the crime and grime that ties them all
- 34:46Speaker 1: together like you do. And well that's a disgrace, all right.
- 34:50Speaker 1: April fifteenth, nineteen eighty nine, that's when the Hillsborough disaster
- 34:54Speaker 1: went down, and this is what America is listening to
