- 0:01First Corinthians chapter 8 Let us pray our Lord, our God, our
- 0:09king, our master, our Savior, our All in all, our everything.
- 0:13Father, we are laid down lovers of you.
- 0:16Father, we just want to touch from you.
- 0:18Lord God Almighty, we are yours. We are emptied out of self and
- 0:23God. We take up your banner, we take
- 0:25up your 'cause we take up your word God and we take it to the
- 0:29ends of of the world. God, we are unashamed of the
- 0:32gospel. Father, it is all about you and
- 0:34it's always been about you and it'll always be about you.
- 0:37So God, I pray that we will be found with our hand to the plow
- 0:42and we'll be out in the harvest. God, we are your workers and we
- 0:45are here. God, we are your bond servants.
- 0:48We choose you today over sin. We choose you today over self
- 0:53preservation. We choose you today over mammon.
- 0:57We choose you today over selfish pride and vanity.
- 1:01God, we only want what you want. God.
- 1:04We want your heart and your mind.
- 1:07Lord, give us Our Daily Bread for today.
- 1:11Let us get into the Word as the word gets into us.
- 1:14God, search us out, purify us and purge out all of the
- 1:18impurities. God, refine us in the refiners
- 1:22fire. As you tread in the grain press,
- 1:25God, as you tread in the wine press, Father, I pray that you
- 1:29will make US more like your SON, Jesus Christ, our Lord and our
- 1:35Master, our Messiah. And Lord, you are everything.
- 1:40And we are waiting expectantly, and we are here expectantly,
- 1:44knowing that you desire to use us.
- 1:47And so, Father, we empty ourselves of ourselves.
- 1:50We empty ourselves of all of our selfishness, God, and we just
- 1:55want you. So, Lord, as we open up your
- 1:58word, let it jump into our hearts and into our minds, and
- 2:02God, let it become part of who we are.
- 2:04Let it become part of our thought processes, our emotional
- 2:08level. God, let it become part of our
- 2:10physiological self. Lord, I pray that we will be
- 2:15your people who are called by Your name, who take Your word
- 2:20out into all the earth. Father, I pray against all the
- 2:25schemes of the enemy. God, bind the enemy today from
- 2:28off of the youth. Bind the enemy today from off of
- 2:32the elderly. Bind the enemy today from off of
- 2:34your people, God, and cast him into the judgement that you have
- 2:38a waiting for him. Father, we only want you.
- 2:41God, we are sold out to you. God, we love you Jesus, and we
- 2:46thank you for life and life eternal and life abundant.
- 2:49God, and we measure everything that comes our way.
- 2:53By what does your word reveal to us?
- 2:55So God, we lay line upon line and precept upon precept,
- 3:00knowing your heart and knowing your mind and knowing that your
- 3:04desire is that none should perish, but that all should come
- 3:07to repentance. So God, we spread the seed out.
- 3:10God, you make it grow. We water it, Father, but you
- 3:14give the growth. Father, we love you.
- 3:16King Jesus, it's all about you. King Jesus, be honored and
- 3:19glorified in the highest today by the reading of your Word.
- 3:24I decrease as you increase it. It's all about you and it's in
- 3:28Jesus Christ, holy and precious name that I pray, Amen.
- 3:36Let's start in verse one. Now as touching things offered
- 3:44to idols. We know that we all have
- 3:47knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but charity
- 3:53edifies. So the question is, what are you
- 3:57doing with all of the knowledge that you possess about the Word
- 4:02of God? Are you using it for your own
- 4:05selfish, greedy gain, or are you using it to build others up with
- 4:11love, the love that only comes from a relationship with Jesus
- 4:16Christ? We cannot know love unless we
- 4:20know Jesus Christ. God is love and we only love
- 4:25because He first loved us. And that is why we do not use
- 4:29all the knowledge of the Bible to usurp our authority in Lord
- 4:34over people. Friends, that is evil and that
- 4:38is wicked at its core and that is what you need to understand.
- 4:42And that is what He is saying here, is that even all the way
- 4:45back in the Garden of Eden, the tree of the knowledge of both
- 4:50good and evil, not just of the knowledge of evil, but the
- 4:54knowledge of good and evil. And that is how many cults have
- 4:58sprang up. That is how many people have
- 5:01been mass manipulated by the church and by religion friends.
- 5:08And far be it from us to use the knowledge that we have to
- 5:13selfishly try to gain ground and to selfishly try to manipulate
- 5:19the masses. And that is what he is Speaking
- 5:22of here. And we need to be on guard.
- 5:24And it is the love that tears down all of the opposition.
- 5:29And that is how we know who belongs to him.
- 5:33It is by the love that builds each other up.
- 5:36We need to be encouraging our brothers and sisters, not trying
- 5:41to tear them down, not trying to be right.
- 5:43And that is the whole principle of the whole crux of the whole
- 5:46matter is what you need to understand and lock in on is
- 5:50this very principle. It is easy to make a point, but
- 5:58it is much harder to make a difference.
- 6:03And we are called to be difference makers in this world.
- 6:07Verse 2. And if any man thinks that he
- 6:11knows anything, he has nothing yet, as he ought to know.
- 6:17The moment you think that you've got it all figured out, the
- 6:20little bit that you have will be taken from you.
- 6:23You have to position yourself in a way where you say, the only
- 6:28thing that I know is that I know nothing.
- 6:32And just like Paul here has said, the only thing he wanted
- 6:37to know was Christ and Christ crucified.
- 6:40It is the cornerstone, the chief cornerstone that we build our
- 6:44life upon and we will never be put to dismay. 3 But if any man
- 6:51loves God, the same is known of him.
- 6:56That is, the only thing that even matters is if you are known
- 7:00by him, Not just that you know him, but that you are known by
- 7:05him. And that is where Jesus says,
- 7:09depart from me, for I never knew you.
- 7:12It's not enough to own a library of Bibles.
- 7:15It's not enough to attend church every single week faithfully.
- 7:21It's not enough to take hold of religion.
- 7:23Friends, we must be known by Him Verse 4 as concerning,
- 7:29therefore, the eating of those things that are offered and
- 7:33sacrificed to idols. We know that an idol is nothing
- 7:36in the world and there is none other God but one.
- 7:41We serve the only one true living God and every other
- 7:45lowercase G God is an idol, friends.
- 7:48And Paul is saying that all of that is a is nothing in
- 7:52comparison to the Lord God Almighty, Adonai El Shaddai.
- 7:57And that is who we serve as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
- 8:00Jacob, the creator of everything seen and unseen, the only
- 8:05uncreated, and even all the fallen angels and even all of
- 8:12the rulers and authorities and the principalities who call
- 8:15themselves gods, these lowercase G.
- 8:19They are all the created beings. And there is no power that is
- 8:24greater than our God, who is like our God.
- 8:30And Paul here wants these Corinthians to know that they
- 8:33have great liberty, but they cannot be a stumbling block to
- 8:37their brothers. They cannot abuse their
- 8:40liberalism, friends, and they cannot look down the nose at the
- 8:44legalist friends. And Paul here is going to
- 8:48equalize them. He's going to bring the ones on
- 8:51the bottom up to higher ground and he's going to bring all the
- 8:55lofty down on equal playing field.
- 8:59And that is what you need to know is God is near to the
- 9:03broken hearted, the contrite heart, friends.
- 9:07And if you want to be humbled, then you become prideful.
- 9:14But if you want to be exalted, then you become humble.
- 9:19And that is the way of God. And there is this great
- 9:22equalizing that happens. We cannot be puffed up.
- 9:27We cannot be prideful and vain. You will be brought low.
- 9:31But if you are lowly in heart and if you are meek friends, you
- 9:37will inherit the earth and you will see God.
- 9:40And that is the way of our Lord Jesus Christ. 5 For though there
- 9:49be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, as there
- 9:54be gods many and Lords many. So he's referencing scripture
- 10:01and Psalms, he's referencing Scripture and Exodus.
- 10:05He's referencing these little one off scriptures that call
- 10:10people lowercase G gods because of their authority that they
- 10:14have and what Jesus even said in his earthly ministry whenever he
- 10:21says why do you call it blasphemous that I call myself
- 10:25the Son of God. And what you need to understand
- 10:29is that all of the people who try to call themselves gods are
- 10:37committing blasphemy. And here we need to understand
- 10:44that if we try to make ourselves into gods and we try to get
- 10:53worship from men, we'll be eat up with maggots.
- 10:57And that is what you saw back there in the book of Acts when
- 11:01Herod didn't refuse the worship of the people.
- 11:05He was eat up with worms. And here we are.
- 11:09We need to understand in this culture and the day in the age
- 11:12that we live in, that is great blasphemy.
- 11:15And the only one that can call themselves the Son of God is
- 11:20Jesus Christ. And it is not blasphemous
- 11:22because three in one, the Trinity, God the Father, God the
- 11:26Son, and God the Holy Ghost, three in one, friends.
- 11:31And anytime you see a culture that is trying to exalt self,
- 11:36that is pride. And that is the national
- 11:39religion of hell, friends. And so even as the Bible tries
- 11:46to call these men gods, it is not the appropriate title that
- 11:52we give ourselves. It just means in the context
- 11:57that they have authority over people.
- 12:01It is not that there is any other God other than our God,
- 12:06the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, El Shaddai, El Elyon, the
- 12:11Most High God. There is but one God. 6 But to
- 12:18us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things,
- 12:23and we in Him, and 1 Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things,
- 12:30and we by Him all things seen and unseen, are created for Him,
- 12:35by Him, and to Him. 7 How be it there is not in every man that
- 12:43knowledge? For some with conscience of the
- 12:47idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol, and
- 12:53their conscience being weak, is defiled.
- 12:56We know that back there in Acts, whenever they were trying to
- 12:59figure out if the Gentiles who were coming into the faith
- 13:03needed to be circumcised, and they said, No, no, no, we just
- 13:09need to abstain from meat that has been sacrificed to idols and
- 13:14from strangled meats and also from sexual immorality.
- 13:21And here Paul is buttoning up all of the thoughts in this
- 13:25early church, and he's telling them that they do not need to
- 13:30abuse their license to sin. This grace that we're in,
- 13:37friends, God forbid you ever find a follower of the way who
- 13:43is abusing their liberty. And Paul wants them to know that
- 13:48if they become a stumbling block in this eating of foods that
- 13:53have been sacrificed to idols, if they become a a stumbling
- 13:58block, they will be guilty of a great offense of leading people
- 14:02off into sin. And that is the whole crux of
- 14:06the whole matter of the whole situation, friends.
- 14:10And that is what you need to understand.
- 14:13And in our day and our hour there are many hot topics of can
- 14:20we listen to secular music and can we watch horror movies and
- 14:25can we smoke or drink or is it appropriate to dance or not or
- 14:32to wear a dress or jeans? This Jezebel spirit that people
- 14:37get attached to them whenever they are in immodest dress and
- 14:42call themselves Christians. There are many hot topic debates
- 14:47that we can have and what you need to understand is those are
- 14:52not salvific issues. They are not in the context of
- 14:56if we are made right with God or not.
- 14:59These are in direct connection with the rewards that we will
- 15:02get whenever we get to heaven. And that is what you need to
- 15:07understand. This is not a topic of
- 15:10salvation, friends. And he wants, Paul wants God
- 15:15wants us, and he wanted them to know that we are being watched
- 15:21by our brothers and sisters. And there are many who consider
- 15:24themselves to be elitist and superior because they can follow
- 15:29all of the legalistic decrees and all the legalistic moral
- 15:35compass and conscience that they have.
- 15:38And then there are those that are abusing grace and they think
- 15:41that it's OK to do and say and go wherever they want to go.
- 15:46And they don't think that anything's wrong.
- 15:48And they, each of them are calling each other into
- 15:50question. And far be it from us, friends,
- 15:53to break down our brothers and sisters because of their
- 15:56conscience and because of their convictions.
- 15:59And that is the whole point of this whole chapter, Friends. 8
- 16:05But meat commends us not to God. For neither if we eat are we the
- 16:10better? Neither if we eat not are we the
- 16:12worst. That is what he's trying to get
- 16:14them to understand is don't think of yourself as a superior
- 16:19Christian. Don't break down your brother
- 16:23because they are legalistic, and don't break down your brother
- 16:27because they are at liberty 9. But take heed, lest by any means
- 16:36this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to them that are
- 16:40weak. So you can see here who are the
- 16:42weak ones. It's the legalist.
- 16:47You can see here in a very interesting turn of events, how
- 16:50God reveals that those who are trapped in legalism are the
- 16:55weak. 10 For if any man see you which has knowledge sit meat at
- 17:03the idols temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak
- 17:07be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to
- 17:11idols? That is what you need to
- 17:12understand is that the legalist conscience has deep seated
- 17:17convictions. And if we and our liberty
- 17:20provoke them to come and to abuse the things that they know
- 17:25is wrong in their own heart and that are pricked in their own
- 17:29conscience, and we entice them over into liberalism and
- 17:35liberty. It is a great sin to God and He
- 17:38sees it as a stumbling block and that is why we are not to try to
- 17:42judge each other by our convictions.
- 17:45God gives us different degrees and convictions at different
- 17:48times. And it is the $1,000,000 word
- 17:51sanctification, friends. And He deals with all the first
- 17:55things that are so outward and forward at first, whenever they
- 17:59are the things that are going to destroy us the fastest.
- 18:03And then as time goes on, He increases the volume and the
- 18:06nuances, and he starts to peel back all the layers, and he
- 18:10reveals hidden things that you didn't even know were there,
- 18:14friends. And he's going to sanctify you
- 18:16and get you ready for all of eternity, friends.
- 18:18And you could do it the easy way or the hard way. 10 For if any
- 18:23man see you which has knowledge, and they sit at me in the idols
- 18:27temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be
- 18:31emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols?
- 18:3411 And through your knowledge shall the weak brother perish,
- 18:40for whom Christ died. That is the sad reality is that
- 18:52somebody who is trapped in legalism, and they are right in
- 18:57their own minds, and the Bible tells us that it is sin to know
- 19:01what to do and not to do it. And that is what he is
- 19:06referencing here. They knew that their calling was
- 19:09to abstain from the great liberty that you and I enjoy,
- 19:15and we entice them into liberty. And it was a great sin.
- 19:19And they perish. And that is the mystery of God,
- 19:25friends, is that He knows for them and for their camp and for
- 19:29their oil cost, for their circle of influence, that they are
- 19:32called to be a John the Baptist, and not to touch any alcohol.
- 19:38And they have taken the vow of a Nazarite, friends, and it is
- 19:42beautiful in the sight of God. 12:00 But when you sin, sow
- 19:50against your brothers and wound their weak conscience, you sin
- 19:54against Christ. Did you catch it?
- 19:57Did you see it? Marvel at it?
- 20:00Friends, These are God's spoken words, the Rhema on the page.
- 20:05They're alive and active, and they're reading you right now.
- 20:09You have. Sinned against Christ.
- 20:17And again, we are not talking about salvific issues.
- 20:20These are the rewards that we will gain, the crowns that we
- 20:24will gain for all of eternity. And that is what is at stake
- 20:32here. When you offend Christ.
- 20:36It's wood, hay and stubble. We'll end on 13.
- 20:43Wherefore if meat makes my brother to offend, I will eat no
- 20:47flesh while the world stands, lest I make my brother to
- 20:52offend. Paul is saying here that if he
- 20:57even thinks that somebody's going to be offended by his
- 21:00liberty, then he will take the legalistic approach.
- 21:06He says I will eat no meat if it's going to cause my brother
- 21:09to be a stumbling block. And that is what you need to
- 21:12understand. You think it's joke joking and
- 21:15it's funny, it's laughable and you think that those that are
- 21:22trapped in legalism need to be set free.
- 21:27But the reality is God has called them into those camps to
- 21:31be a great difference maker to their circle of influence and
- 21:38perchance they will come over to the side of liberty.
- 21:44But it is not our place to try to draw them into it.
- 21:48We need to make sure that we are not the stumbling block to those
- 21:54brothers and sisters. That is the greatest take away
- 21:57from this chapter, friends. Whether it is alcohol, whether
- 22:01it is movies, whether it is music, whether it is smoking,
- 22:06whether it is language, no matter what it is, we do not
- 22:10need to be a stumbling block to our brothers.
- 22:13And there have been many who have made a grave mistake by
- 22:18thinking that it's funny and that it is humorous to entice
- 22:24the legalist into liberality. And the devil doesn't care what
- 22:29side of the road you wreck on, friends, as long as you wreck,
- 22:32you can wreck on the side of the road of legalism, and you can
- 22:37you can wreck on the side of the road of liberty.
- 22:41We need to pull it up in between the mayonnaise and the mustard.
- 22:45We need to make sure that we are keeping this bus in the middle
- 22:49of the road here, friends, blessed is the balance, the Mary
- 22:53and the Martha. Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, we
- 22:57love you. Father, I hope you've been
- 22:59blessed by this amazing chapter here in God's Word.
- 23:02I know I sure have. Stay strong in the faith.
- 23:15Put on the full armor of God, work out your salvation with
- 23:21fear and trembling. Make sure you have the fruits of
- 23:26the Spirit. Love God, love your, love your
- 23:32neighbor. Everything else will take care
- 23:34of itself. I love you, I'm praying for you.
- 23:50We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 23:53God bless you.
