- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is Caleb. I play in I Promise the World.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I play guitar and I sing. We're going on tour
- 0:08Speaker 1: with August Burns Red. This in what, less than four weeks?
- 0:14Speaker 1: Like less than a month, so yeah.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Fantastic, man. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 0:22Speaker 2: No worries. So as you say, bro, I promised the.
- 0:24Speaker 4: World head to Australia for the first time ever very
- 0:26Speaker 4: soon for a run of dates with August Burns Red,
- 0:29Speaker 4: starting in Perth on September 27th, then hitting Adelaide, Melbourne,
- 0:32Speaker 4: Sydney and Newcastle before finishing up in Brisbane on October 4th.
- 0:36Speaker 2: So not long now, man. Are you packed and ready
- 0:38Speaker 2: to go?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm excited. Yeah, I'm really excited.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I would say that it is your first time coming
- 0:47Speaker 2: over here, man.
- 0:47Speaker 4: So when you go to a country for the first time,
- 0:49Speaker 4: do you do your research and, like, ask around and
- 0:52Speaker 4: find out what to expect, or do you rather come
- 0:53Speaker 4: in cold and just let it be a surprise?
- 0:55Speaker 1: I kind of like coming in cold. I do a
- 0:57Speaker 1: little research, but I honestly do like coming in cold.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I like finding locals. I've only been overseas once, and
- 1:07Speaker 1: that was, like, this past June.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Wow. And so this will be my... That'll be my,
- 1:15Speaker 3: or by the time I'm in.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Australia, it'll be my third time in a different country
- 1:20Speaker 1: because we did Japan right before Australia. But yeah, I'm
- 1:23Speaker 1: really excited. Yeah, I'm beyond, I can't wait.
- 1:28Speaker 2: What are you actually expecting, mate? Like, we get pretty
- 1:31Speaker 2: rowdy over here.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard the scene there is pretty crazy. And
- 1:36Speaker 1: I feel like since we've been a band, I think
- 1:40Speaker 1: like one of the most like asked for play, like
- 1:43Speaker 1: out of, country places has been australia for like for
- 1:46Speaker 1: us to go and i mean you'll have some legendary
- 1:49Speaker 1: bands like parkway drive so uh i know i know
- 1:52Speaker 1: it's gonna be pretty awesome i killed the prom queen
- 1:55Speaker 1: as well um and uh house versus hurricane i think
- 2:00Speaker 1: is from australia i don't know if they're they're i
- 2:03Speaker 1: might be wrong They are now.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 2:08Speaker 4: I guess the flip side of that, Matt, is we
- 2:10Speaker 4: don't know what to expect from you guys either, so
- 2:12Speaker 4: run us through a typical live show and what we
- 2:14Speaker 4: can expect.
- 2:16Speaker 3: It's just we're going to try to get as much
- 2:19Speaker 3: crowd interaction as we can.
- 2:20Speaker 1: We want everyone to hop on stage, grab the mic,
- 2:25Speaker 1: jump off the stage, just make the show.
- 2:29Speaker 3: It's not our show. It's yours. Very nice.
- 2:34Speaker 4: You toured on the back of your self-titled EP that
- 2:36Speaker 4: was released in January this year, so how was the
- 2:39Speaker 4: reception to that?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Did it get the response you hoped? Yes, it did.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I think, I mean, there's obviously people who don't like it,
- 2:47Speaker 1: people who do, but I think every time I go
- 2:52Speaker 1: on tour, I realize how much people actually like it.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I don't think the internet is a very accurate representation
- 3:01Speaker 1: of how much people really love enjoy your music. So, um,
- 3:06Speaker 1: it's cool seeing that, like, people singing along more than
- 3:08Speaker 1: I've ever heard before. Um, almost every time it feels
- 3:11Speaker 1: like people are singing louder, which is really cool.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And at the time, the press release called the, um,
- 3:17Speaker 4: EP a rebirth of sorts for the group.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Like, how, how is it a rebirth?
- 3:23Speaker 1: Um, I, I guess I feel like me, I feel like, yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 1: the press did say that, but I don't, to me
- 3:32Speaker 1: it isn't, it, I can see a rebirth in the
- 3:34Speaker 1: way it was. It was the first project, like actual
- 3:39Speaker 1: EP under.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Our name since we changed it.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And I mean, we wrote the songs even before we
- 3:47Speaker 1: changed our name, but it just felt like it was
- 3:50Speaker 1: a bigger step for us. Just production-wise, we went with
- 3:56Speaker 1: a really experienced, amazing producer who helped us out a lot.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And it was our first major record label release. So
- 4:08Speaker 1: it was a really cool thing to put out there
- 4:12Speaker 1: and see how well people liked.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I think it brought us a broader audience.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, nice. Nice.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And there's only five songs on the EP, mate.
- 4:23Speaker 4: So for the benefit of people in Australia who might
- 4:25Speaker 4: not know the band that well, I want to run
- 4:27Speaker 4: through the songs one at a time and tell us
- 4:29Speaker 4: a bit more.
- 4:29Speaker 2: About them and how they represent I Promise The World.
- 4:33Speaker 2: We'll start with Proud.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Proud is probably our most, like, I'd say, I don't
- 4:43Speaker 1: want to say unique, but it's the most different from,
- 4:46Speaker 1: I'd say, all of them on the EP. At least
- 4:49Speaker 1: it feels like that to me. There's not really, like,
- 4:52Speaker 1: a straight-up breakdown at all in the song. It's very Glassjaw-inspired-esque.
- 4:59Speaker 1: It's very, I feel like there's just a bunch of
- 5:02Speaker 1: stuff in a pot. Um, and it was almost structured.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I almost wanted to structure it like a pop song
- 5:09Speaker 1: in a way. Um, and I, um, I feel like
- 5:14Speaker 1: usually like when you're making, trying to make a song,
- 5:17Speaker 1: you're almost focusing on the chorus, but I feel like
- 5:20Speaker 1: with that song, we really focused on like making the
- 5:23Speaker 1: verse almost like the most important thing in the song.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Um, I, uh, that's, that's how I be proud.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And it's, It's my personal favorite to play, one of
- 5:34Speaker 1: my personal favorites to play, but I don't know if
- 5:36Speaker 1: I can say the same thing about the rest of
- 5:37Speaker 1: the band.
- 5:38Speaker 4: I think you've got a pure expression.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I think that's, okay, I just lied to myself.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I said that. Pure expression is 100% my favorite song
- 5:55Speaker 3: on the EP.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I feel like it's a perfect thing that shows, like,
- 6:00Speaker 1: everything we were trying to go for in one song, um,
- 6:05Speaker 1: like with the singing, with the clean guitar parts, um, the, the,
- 6:09Speaker 1: some of the heaviness to it.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And it's just, it's really fun to play. That's yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I love that song.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So, um, then you got bliss in seven languages.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Um, yeah, that, that was the, that was the hit single,
- 6:26Speaker 1: I'd say, I guess off the, off the EP. Um,
- 6:31Speaker 1: I think, yeah, the band holds that song pretty, like,
- 6:35Speaker 1: it's pretty special to us because we, that was one of, like,
- 6:38Speaker 1: our first, like, new songs before we even released the
- 6:42Speaker 1: EP that we were playing live. And, like, we were
- 6:44Speaker 1: really excited about just getting it out there before it
- 6:48Speaker 1: was out. And, yeah, I mean, it's every time I
- 6:53Speaker 1: feel like the crowd, the crowd interaction on that song
- 6:57Speaker 1: is always really insane.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Then we'll move on to a future worth dying for.
- 7:06Speaker 1: This song we recorded, that song we recorded before, there
- 7:11Speaker 1: was a second recording of it.
- 7:14Speaker 3: We recorded it for a split earlier before we dropped
- 7:17Speaker 3: the EP.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I think that was the first song we wrote that
- 7:23Speaker 1: led into the new direction we kind of steered in.
- 7:26Speaker 3: That was also.
- 7:28Speaker 1: One of the It's one of the few songs that
- 7:30Speaker 1: we've wrote, like, as a group all at once, almost.
- 7:35Speaker 3: We kind of do writing very separately. Like, one person
- 7:39Speaker 3: writes a riff.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Like, usually I'll write a riff, show it to everyone,
- 7:42Speaker 1: or just me and the drummer get together and hash
- 7:44Speaker 1: it out, and we add everyone in.
- 7:47Speaker 3: But that song, I think we all got in just, like,
- 7:50Speaker 3: one space.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And, like, I believe we just did it, like, from scratch. Like,
- 7:54Speaker 1: I think we had an intro riff, and that's all.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And then from there, it turned into what it was.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Cool. And then it closes out with Emerald Waltz.
- 8:05Speaker 1: That song is interesting to us because we... I don't know.
- 8:10Speaker 1: We don't ever play it live. We've never played it
- 8:12Speaker 1: live before. Still to this day.
- 8:14Speaker 3: I feel like part of it is because... Not that
- 8:21Speaker 3: I don't... I.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Like the song, but I like the intro a lot.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I don't think I feel like I feel like I
- 8:30Speaker 1: feel like we could have done better. And I feel
- 8:31Speaker 1: like part of that is because we wrote the song
- 8:33Speaker 1: in the studio. That was one of the songs like
- 8:36Speaker 1: that was basically born in the studio. I mean, I
- 8:38Speaker 1: think all we had was like just the intro guitar
- 8:42Speaker 1: line and that was all.
- 8:45Speaker 3: But it seems to be like people love it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: It's like we wanted to make like a ballady song
- 8:51Speaker 1: that was like very pretty and slow. And that was
- 8:55Speaker 1: that was the whole like motive for that song. And
- 9:01Speaker 1: I think one day, we'll definitely play it one day.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I don't know when, but I think songs like that
- 9:07Speaker 1: for most bands, usually more ballad-like songs, most bands don't
- 9:14Speaker 1: want to play them live.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I understand why.
- 9:17Speaker 1: It's almost boring to us because compared to our other songs,
- 9:22Speaker 1: it's not as involved, but I do see why someone
- 9:26Speaker 1: would like it.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Come on, man.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Your music blends screamo with Midwest emo and post-hardcore elements.
- 9:35Speaker 2: How do you find the balance in the creative process
- 9:38Speaker 2: when you're doing it? How do you know when you've
- 9:40Speaker 2: gone too far in one direction or not far enough
- 9:42Speaker 2: in another?
- 9:45Speaker 3: It's kind of really hard sometimes.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I feel like I've never really thought about it that
- 9:51Speaker 1: much until recently. um like I've always like I think
- 10:00Speaker 1: I started thinking about it more recently because um not
- 10:04Speaker 1: I love metalcore but I I don't want to be
- 10:08Speaker 1: labeled as a metalcore band yeah um I I like
- 10:14Speaker 1: I like being like seen as just something different I
- 10:19Speaker 1: feel like Not that metalcore, like, there can be good metalcore,
- 10:23Speaker 1: but I think ever since I started it, I wanted
- 10:24Speaker 1: it to be more, it feels emo. And I think
- 10:29Speaker 1: with emo, there's so much, like, different, there's different, like,
- 10:34Speaker 1: parts of it. Like, one thing can, like, two things
- 10:36Speaker 1: can be, like, the most emo things you've heard, but
- 10:38Speaker 1: they could sound completely different. It could sound emo in a, like,
- 10:44Speaker 1: a Taking Back Sunday way, or it could sound emo
- 10:47Speaker 1: in a Sayosin way.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Or emo in a mineral way.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And I feel like all that stuff is.
- 10:55Speaker 3: I just want to.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I try my best to somehow implement every single aspect
- 11:00Speaker 1: of emo that I can.
- 11:03Speaker 3: I think that's my goal with every song. Yeah, sweet.
- 11:07Speaker 2: And what about after the Australian show, mate? What have
- 11:10Speaker 2: I promised the world got planned for the near future?
- 11:14Speaker 3: Um.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm at the studio right now. Actually, we're working on
- 11:19Speaker 1: our new album. And we'll hopefully do some more tours
- 11:25Speaker 1: next year. Yeah, I think right now we're just really
- 11:29Speaker 1: focused on our album and making it the best it
- 11:32Speaker 1: can be.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Well, thanks very much for your time, mate.
- 11:36Speaker 4: You've been around here from the 27th of this month
- 11:39Speaker 4: with all the Spurns Red.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So best of luck to the tour, mate. And hopefully
- 11:42Speaker 2: catch you at the Brisbane show.
