Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we have a super special
- 0:19Tabernacle Talk episode that I am really looking forward to.
- 0:23We just completed book 5 of Psalms and so all 150 Psalms now
- 0:30have a Tabernacle Talk episode. And so if you want to go back
- 0:35and look at any Psalm at any time, you can certainly use, if
- 0:40you're listening to this podcast, you can use the search
- 0:43feature on Spotify podcast, Apple Podcast, whatever you use,
- 0:47you can use that to find any Psalm you want.
- 0:50You can also use Tabernacles YouTube channel, which is
- 0:54youtube.com forward slash at TBC Essex and you can find all of
- 1:03the psalms on there. Or you can use our church
- 1:07website, tbcsx.com/psalms, that's TB csx.com/psalms.
- 1:17And on that particular web page, I have all 150 psalms listed
- 1:24out. And for the 22 episodes that we
- 1:26did in Psalm 119, those are all listed out.
- 1:29I also have all of the sermons that I've preached through any
- 1:33of the individual psalms. Those are also all listed on
- 1:38that particular page. Actually at anytime you want, if
- 1:41you go to tbces.sex.com and then you can do forward slash
- 1:46whatever book of the Bible that you want.
- 1:49Or if you go tbcsx.com/bible, you can see all of the books of
- 1:54Scripture listed out. And on every single one of those
- 1:57pages I have, if I've preached any sermons or done any podcast
- 2:02episodes on those from those books of Scripture, I've listed
- 2:06those in there. And then oh, what's the other
- 2:11thing then when there's any summary videos of those books of
- 2:15the Bible. So like from the Bible Project,
- 2:18I have included those summary videos at the top of all of
- 2:23those pages. So the goal is that the website
- 2:26would be able to be a little bit of a one stop shop for you as
- 2:30you have Bible questions, as you're wanting to do your
- 2:34devotions, you have questions about a particular book of the
- 2:38Bible or a particular chapter or portion of Scripture.
- 2:42The goal would be that you would be able to find all of those
- 2:45answers in one place. And so I've made that resource
- 2:48available for you. We are going to next in
- 2:54Tabernacle Talk. We're heading back over to the
- 2:57New Testament and I'm going to be going over the book of first
- 3:01Timothy. First Timothy and we did Second
- 3:05Timothy together, going one verse at a time in each episode
- 3:11all the way through Second Timothy and Tabernacle Tidbits
- 3:14last January or no? I think it was like last
- 3:18February through April. And that was a incredibly
- 3:23enjoyable, enriching time. But we're going to be going next
- 3:27through First Timothy. And when we do that, we'll have
- 3:30done all of the New Testament books in either podcast or
- 3:36sermon, from Ephesians all the way to Jude.
- 3:40So we almost have done together almost all of the New Testament
- 3:47books. We only have a few that are
- 3:49left, Matthew, Luke, Romans and 1st and 2nd Corinthians and
- 3:55Galatians and then Revelation at the end.
- 3:58So we are fast approaching the end of having completed all of
- 4:04the New Testament books and then we'll still have many Old
- 4:07Testament books that we'll be going through.
- 4:10So Next up, we are going to be looking at First Timothy
- 4:14starting on Monday. But today I'm really excited for
- 4:18today. And tomorrow we're kind of going
- 4:21a little bit off script, if you will.
- 4:23And that is because today we are going over Psalm 151 and you
- 4:28might go, but wait, Brian, there's only 150 Psalms.
- 4:32Well, yes, for the vast majority of Christians throughout the
- 4:36last 2000 years, that has been the case.
- 4:38However, in the what's called the intertestamental period.
- 4:43So after the Old Testament was completed and before Jesus and
- 4:47the apostles came on the scene, it was about two to 400 years
- 4:51worth of time where God's people were reflecting on the Old
- 4:55Testament and what God had declared and what he had said
- 4:58and what the stories of God's people were.
- 5:01And they were looking forward to the promised Messiah that would
- 5:05be coming. And so they wrote a lot of
- 5:08stuff, if you will, commentaries and short stories and fan
- 5:13fictions and prayers even, and applications and things of what
- 5:19God's word meant as they pondered it, like what God was
- 5:23doing in their hearts. And one of the things that they
- 5:26wrote was this Psalm called Psalm that they called Psalm
- 5:30151, which is a, as they write the inscription here, oh,
- 5:36Hallelujah, praise the Lord of David, Jesse's son.
- 5:41And so it's written from the perspective of David as he
- 5:44thinks about his life and what God had done in and through him.
- 5:50And so this is not for anyone in like the Protestant or Catholic
- 5:55tradition. Psalm 151 has never been
- 5:57included in any of our portions of Scripture.
- 6:01The what's called the Eastern Orthodox Church, which I do not
- 6:06have time to do a whole church history lesson right now, but if
- 6:09you have any questions, I encourage you look at the
- 6:12website gotquestions.org. gotquestions.org and that's a
- 6:18resource. Many of the individuals
- 6:21associated with that come from Dallas Theological Seminary,
- 6:25which is a solid orthodox and by that I mean they they have the
- 6:31historical legitimate Christian faith.
- 6:33It's not a spin off cult or something.
- 6:35They are an orthodox conservative, Bible believing
- 6:39seminary and have been for many years.
- 6:42Some of my professors even in Bible college were graduates of
- 6:45Dallas Theological Seminary and they have a wealth of resources
- 6:50available. So Psalm 151 people had not had
- 6:56any Hebrew copies of this portion or of this writing up
- 7:02until the Dead Sea Scrolls in the last century.
- 7:05So the Dead Sea Scrolls were kind of found by accident by a
- 7:10kid that I like thrown a stone, heard a clay pot like shattering
- 7:16from the rock that was thrown in a kind of a, a very hilly cave
- 7:23section of Israel. And so when he went to go see
- 7:28like, oh man, what was that sound?
- 7:29He discovered an immense amount of pottery and, you know, the
- 7:36remains of scrolls and different things.
- 7:39And so thankfully they were able to get some archaeologists that
- 7:44came and there were just an immense wealth of resources and
- 7:51historical insights, as many of these scrolls had come from the
- 7:551st century AD. And it gave such an incredible
- 8:01look at what the Jewish life and beliefs and practices and
- 8:07scriptures looked like during the same century and in the same
- 8:11country as Jesus lived. So there's a wonderful resource
- 8:16to find. Before that, the oldest Hebrew
- 8:20manuscripts that we had came from about AD 1000.
- 8:25And so for a long time, people wondered if the Hebrew
- 8:29manuscripts that we had could be trusted.
- 8:32And what the Dead Sea Scrolls showed us is that, yes,
- 8:35absolutely, that the text that we have in our Hebrew
- 8:42manuscripts today is materially the same.
- 8:46It's it's the same stories, the same theology, the same beliefs,
- 8:51even much of all the same like breakdowns.
- 8:55There was great immense continuity between what they
- 8:59discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls and what we have today
- 9:032000 years later. And what a joy that as God
- 9:06promised to preserve His word, that His message would not be
- 9:12twisted beyond belief, that we could believe the Word of God,
- 9:18that that was proven true through the Dead Sea Scrolls.
- 9:21And as the Dead Sea Scrolls had many of those intertestamental
- 9:25writings or those things that had come in the 2 to 400 years
- 9:29prior to that century, one of the things that they discovered
- 9:33was the first Hebrew manuscripts of Psalm 151.
- 9:38And by the 1st, I mean the first ones that we had extant or still
- 9:42surviving. It was not like the initial, you
- 9:47know, papyrus or scroll that the author had written Psalm 151 on,
- 9:52but it was Psalm 151 in Hebrew. So that was a lot of background
- 9:58to kind of give you what this what this poem, what this song
- 10:03is. And so I want to be clear, this
- 10:06is not part of the Canon of Scripture, but this is a song
- 10:12that a believer in God wrote sometime between BC400 and AD0.
- 10:19And So what a joy that we can see what the thoughts and what
- 10:24the worship of God look like about 2200 years ago.
- 10:29And so let's read through Psalm 151, quote UN quote, together.
- 10:34And I hope that it'll be an encouragement to you as you
- 10:37think about the life of David, the sweet psalmist of Israel.
- 10:41Verse number one, I was the smallest of my brothers, the
- 10:45youngest of my father's sons. He made me shepherd of his
- 10:49flock, ruler over there, young, if you will.
- 10:52I was king of the sheep and of the lambs.
- 10:56Verse 2, My hands made a flute, my fingers a liar like a harp.
- 11:01Let me give glory to Yahweh. I thought to myself, the
- 11:04mountains cannot witness to God. The hills cannot proclaim him,
- 11:09but the trees have cherished my words, the flocks, my deeds.
- 11:14I love this picture here. He says that the mountains, they
- 11:17are not going to sing to God and the hills cannot preach to other
- 11:24people about who God is and what he has accomplished.
- 11:27I'm not in the way that a human mouth can.
- 11:30And I love that, he says here. But the trees have cherished my
- 11:33words, that as he's out watching these flocks, he says the trees
- 11:37have been my audience hearing as I've been praising the Lord and
- 11:41these sheep have heard about the works that God has done even in
- 11:46and through my life. Verse #4 Who can proclaim?
- 11:50Who can announce, who can declare Yahweh's deeds?
- 11:54God has seen everything, God has heard everything.
- 11:58God has listened. God sent his prophet to anoint
- 12:03me, Samuel to make me great. My brothers went out to meet
- 12:07him. Handsome in form and appearance,
- 12:10their stature tall, their hair beautiful.
- 12:13But Yahweh, God did not choose them.
- 12:17Instead He sent and took me from following the flock.
- 12:22God anointed me with holy oil. God made me leader for His
- 12:26people, ruler over the children of His covenant.
- 12:30So this man that was in charge of sheep and lambs is now in
- 12:33charge of God's people, Israel. And He is the ruler over the
- 12:38children of Israel, just like the children of the sheep.
- 12:41Now He's over the children of Israel.
- 12:44I went out to attack the Philistine who cursed me by his
- 12:48idols, but after I uncovered his own sword, I cut off his head.
- 12:53So I removed the shame from the Israelites.
- 12:59I love thinking about David, reflecting on God's goodness
- 13:04towards him, about the way that God changed David's life.
- 13:09Can I ask you today, you will not be named ruler over Israel.
- 13:15You will likely. I think I know my audience for
- 13:18the most part. He, God will not make you
- 13:21shepherd over a literal flock. You will not be watching over
- 13:26lambs. If you do happen to be a farmer
- 13:28and you have some sheep or some lambs, let me know.
- 13:30I'd love to hear from you. You will likely not make
- 13:35instruments of your own here, a flute or a liar, a harp to give
- 13:40praise to the Lord. You won't have to face Goliath,
- 13:43but God is doing something in and through you that He did not
- 13:48do through David. You get to know God's own Holy
- 13:53Spirit indwelling you all the days of your life.
- 13:56As you have believed in Jesus. You not just in a prophetic way
- 14:01know about Jesus and what Jesus would accomplish.
- 14:04You actually get to read in your scriptures about what Jesus did
- 14:09for you. You have gotten to know exactly
- 14:12what will happen as you draw your final breath, that you will
- 14:16be reunited with your Creator and you will be with Jesus
- 14:19forever. For as He said that where I am,
- 14:22there you may be also, and to be absent from the body is to be
- 14:26present with the Lord. So can I ask you, David, from
- 14:31the perspective of the person writing this song, David knew
- 14:37that the mountains and the hills couldn't praise God, not in the
- 14:42way that He could. And you have an opportunity to
- 14:46praise God today to tell other people about him, to declare, if
- 14:51you will, to your office cubicle.
- 14:54You can declare to the inside of your car or the inside of your
- 14:58home. You can tell your Facebook
- 15:00friends if you go out for a walk today, you can tell the grass or
- 15:04a neighbor, or you can tell a friend about who God is and what
- 15:09He has accomplished. You need to tell them about this
- 15:13God, this one who is great verse #4 in this song says, who can
- 15:19proclaim, who can announce, who can declare Yahweh's deeds?
- 15:23And the answer is every single person that either has a mouth
- 15:27or has hands to be able to text or to type, to proclaim to other
- 15:35people about God and what He has done.
- 15:40Can I ask you today, are you praising God?
- 15:43Are you telling other people about him that does not?
- 15:48I've mentioned it many times before.
- 15:50When you're telling people about God, you don't always have to be
- 15:54closing. You are still telling people
- 15:59about God even if they don't pray a prayer, repenting of
- 16:03their sin, and choosing faith in Christ.
- 16:05At the end of your conversation, you can still be proclaiming the
- 16:09Lord, but do the people that are around you.
- 16:12Do your Facebook friends, Do your Instagram friends, do your
- 16:16do the other people commenting on YouTube.
- 16:18Can they tell that you love the Lord through the way that you
- 16:22interact? Are you declaring who God is?
- 16:27I love also this thought from sections like 5 and six, 5-6 and
- 16:34seven of this song that God sent Samuel to anoint.
- 16:39David and his brothers went out to meet Saul and they were, they
- 16:47were taller, they were stronger, they were older.
- 16:50He says they're stature tall, their hair beautiful, but Yahweh
- 16:54God did not choose them. You might think while someone
- 17:00else would be better to testify to who God is or what God's
- 17:04accomplished, but God chose you. And if God chose you and He gave
- 17:09you his salvation, then you are called to testify to the Lord's
- 17:15goodness. You are the one who is meant to
- 17:19disciple others in their walks with the Lord.
- 17:22You are meant to pass on the faith to someone else, whether
- 17:25that be a loved one or a friend or your kids or your grandkids.
- 17:31You are called to pass on what God has given you, and God
- 17:36doesn't care about who might be the quote UN quote best at
- 17:41whatever task. Instead, as we would read in
- 17:44Second Corinthians, not many noble people, not many rich
- 17:50people, not many powerful people are called into the Kingdom of
- 17:54God. And instead, God has given his
- 17:57Kingdom to those that are meek and poor and destitute and
- 18:03sorrowful. And so knowing that that God has
- 18:08called us for a purpose and for a reason, I think that that
- 18:12means we should, we should own the incredible worth and honor
- 18:21that has been placed on us to say, God, if you loved me enough
- 18:27to choose me out of, you know, everyone that exists on planet
- 18:31earth right now, these 8 billion people, you chose me.
- 18:34You didn't overlook me, You didn't reject me, but you
- 18:38welcomed me in. And so God, I have a
- 18:40responsibility. I have the honor to be able to
- 18:44tell everyone around me who you are and what you will do for
- 18:48everyone that calls on you. So don't view yourself as I'm
- 18:54not that great or I don't have all of the oratory skills that
- 18:58someone else has and I don't know how I'd answer some of
- 19:03these questions. Don't have that mindset.
- 19:04Instead, just say if God chose me, then he chose me to tell
- 19:10other people about him. And I believe that God wasn't
- 19:14stupid when he made that choice to choose me.
- 19:17And so I can declare to others just as David did.
- 19:22I can declare to others who you are.
- 19:25And then kind of at the end portion of this where he says I
- 19:28went out to attack the Philistine who cursed me by his
- 19:32idols, but after I uncovered his own sword.
- 19:35So sometimes what's forgotten in the David and Goliath story is
- 19:38that the stone actually that wasn't the end of the story.
- 19:43Like, yes, David hit him with the stone, Goliath went down,
- 19:46but then David went, took out Goliath's sword and chopped off
- 19:50his head. And what brings me so much joy
- 19:54from that is that this instrument that was going, this
- 19:58tool, this weapon that was going to be used to harm others, to
- 20:02harm the children of Israel, to harm God's people, God actually
- 20:05ended up using that sword to bring victory.
- 20:09And so I don't know what kind of difficulties you're facing
- 20:12today. I don't know in what way Satan
- 20:14is trying to attack you. But it could well be that the
- 20:18difficulty that Satan has brought into your life might
- 20:22actually be the thing that as you overcome in the power of the
- 20:26Holy Spirit through faith in the Son of God, that you do not turn
- 20:30your back on God. Instead, you persevere in faith
- 20:33that you might be able to see God use that weapon, that
- 20:38hardship, that loss of a love loved one to be able to rescue
- 20:42people from the power of Satan and darkness because they go,
- 20:46well, my, my friend there or my Co worker there went through
- 20:49this thing that would have totally demolished me.
- 20:54But they went through it and they said their God got them
- 20:57through it. And I have no idea how they were
- 21:00able to do that. And so it might be that this God
- 21:03is real. Let me look into that.
- 21:05And God would use hardship and grief and difficulty and loss in
- 21:10your life to be the sword that cuts Satan off in a person's
- 21:15life. That they would experience new
- 21:17life in Jesus, even through, if you will, the sword of Satan
- 21:21that he wanted to use to destroy you.
- 21:24That God would turn it for good. Well, I hope that this, this
- 21:29song, this 2 millennia old song would be an encouragement to you
- 21:35today as you think about the story of David, as you think
- 21:38about our duty to praise the Lord about the fact that he has
- 21:41loved us and chosen us and given us a mission, and that he works
- 21:46even through what the enemy tries to bring against us.
- 21:49I hope that this would be an encouragement to you today.
- 21:52Tomorrow we have one more of these two millennia old prayers
- 21:57that we're going to look at called the Prayer of Manasa.
- 22:01The prayer of Manasa. And he was one of the Israelite
- 22:05kings, technically, of the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 22:09And he was an incredibly wicked man who, as God brought judgment
- 22:14on him for the wrong that he had done, he turned in faith and
- 22:18repentance to God. And so one of the believers in
- 22:22the Lord 2000 years ago wrote a prayer that he thought would
- 22:30exemplify what would show, would illustrate what Manasso must
- 22:34have felt or what that prayer of repentance could have looked
- 22:36like. So we're going to look at that
- 22:38tomorrow and I'm excited for it. And then on Monday, we're
- 22:41heading over to First Timothy. Thanks for tuning in.
- 22:43Have a wonderful day.
