- 4:10Speaker 7: I know, I shouldn't have asked you, but I knew
- 4:12Speaker 7: you'd come.
- 4:13Speaker 3: That's the nicest thing anyone said to me all day.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And that's almost eight o'clock.
- 4:17Speaker 7: That's Dad over there with a watch. Pete's getting ready
- 4:19Speaker 7: to work, Pete. That's our horse, Peter the Great licks
- 4:23Speaker 7: up on him.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And Vic is the boy you're worried about.
- 4:26Speaker 7: Yes, please don't think I'm a silly, hysterical little girl,
- 4:30Speaker 7: mister Temple. But Dad practically raised it. We grew up together.
- 4:34Speaker 7: And no, no I don't know him at all. I
- 4:37Speaker 7: see I called you because something terrible is going to
- 4:40Speaker 7: happen an.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Bring your friend over here.
- 4:42Speaker 7: He's getting ready, right, I'll tell you lady, mister Templer,
- 4:44Speaker 7: Come on, dad, this is mister Templer, my father, mister Temple.
- 4:50Speaker 4: I'm glad to know him. Mister mcantire, Oh, I said
- 4:53Speaker 4: that's good. Doesn't he Anni full of run over? There?
- 4:55Speaker 4: Told Vic not to let him out though an easy
- 4:58Speaker 4: three eight sets off, getting the horse ready a raised Well,
- 5:01Speaker 4: I might let him go any day now, almost any day,
- 5:03Speaker 4: if he's up to it. Oh, watch him, he's getting
- 5:06Speaker 4: close to the pool. Watch him there he goes Anny
- 5:12Speaker 4: any bec's letting him out too much?
- 5:13Speaker 7: I told him, I said, to it, kit, Hold dad,
- 5:15Speaker 7: he's just breathing.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Well, maybe hold him, big boy, hold him. Looks like
- 5:20Speaker 3: a beautiful animal, mister McIntire.
- 5:22Speaker 4: I guess he was eight years old, would you. He's
- 5:24Speaker 4: been one of the top ones. He should maybe he
- 5:26Speaker 4: will be yet.
- 5:27Speaker 7: Hold him, boy, he's just breathing there.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Well, maybe cut him. How much did you run it in,
- 5:35Speaker 4: mister McIntire, thirteen nine and a fifth. I don't think
- 5:39Speaker 4: he's quite up to a race yet.
- 5:40Speaker 7: But you told Dick not to let him run dead.
- 5:42Speaker 7: He was fighting for his head all the way down
- 5:44Speaker 7: the streets.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Maybe horseman, mister Templar, just a two dollar better, mister McIntyre.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Greatest animal on the face of the earth, the third
- 5:53Speaker 4: red horse that includes humans, two more heart, more brains,
- 5:57Speaker 4: and much kinder to each other. Yes, you may have point.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Has Peter the Great always been your horse? Bread him,
- 6:04Speaker 4: fold him, raced him and had him all his life,
- 6:06Speaker 4: outside of a couple of months a while back. If
- 6:09Speaker 4: it hadn't been for a little lake trouble, Pete would
- 6:11Speaker 4: be up there with the best. Oh here he comes back.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Thirty nine and the fifth, Vick.
- 6:17Speaker 4: You could have held him a.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Little harder, though, Oh Pete, steady boy, tell him a
- 6:23Speaker 3: little harder.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I almost pulled both arms off holding him, all right, pick,
- 6:26Speaker 4: all right, easy boy?
- 6:27Speaker 7: Do you think he's ready for a race?
- 6:29Speaker 8: Dick? What's the matter with you?
- 6:30Speaker 4: Annie? Are you getting it too? You know he's ready
- 6:33Speaker 4: for a race, He's been ready for a month, and
- 6:34Speaker 4: dad knows it too.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Well.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Maybe we'll see, steady Pete.
- 6:38Speaker 5: See what is there to see? The horse is eight
- 6:41Speaker 5: years old?
- 6:41Speaker 4: What are you waiting for? A match? Race?
- 6:43Speaker 5: With citation?
- 6:44Speaker 8: Vick?
- 6:45Speaker 7: This is mister Templer. He's a friend of mine.
- 6:47Speaker 4: I thought, how are you vic?
- 6:49Speaker 5: Dad?
- 6:50Speaker 4: What is it? Every time I work the horse, it's
- 6:52Speaker 4: holding him, holding every time I tell you he's ready
- 6:54Speaker 4: as he'll ever be. It's it's maybe, let's wait and see?
- 6:57Speaker 5: Is it me?
- 6:59Speaker 4: Are you afraid you won't get an honest ride? Is
- 7:00Speaker 4: that it?
- 7:01Speaker 8: Big Well?
- 7:03Speaker 5: Is it?
- 7:03Speaker 4: You no better than that?
- 7:04Speaker 3: Sin?
- 7:05Speaker 4: All right? When are you going to run in?
- 7:07Speaker 8: Then?
- 7:07Speaker 4: Well, we'll see how he cools out today. Maybe maybe
- 7:11Speaker 4: in a week or ten days. A week or ten days, well,
- 7:15Speaker 4: we'll see, we'll see. Come on, feet, come on, boy.
- 7:19Speaker 7: Sick. You shouldn't have said that to Dad about an
- 7:23Speaker 7: honest ride.
- 7:24Speaker 4: That's what he's thinking, isn't it. That's what you're all
- 7:27Speaker 4: saying behind my back, isn't it? And what's mister Templar
- 7:30Speaker 4: here for to spy on me? Big Well, I'll save
- 7:32Speaker 4: you the trouble, mister Templar. Right now, I'm going to
- 7:35Speaker 4: get some sleep, after which I get up, eat some
- 7:38Speaker 4: crumbs that pass for a meal, get in a sweat
- 7:40Speaker 4: box for as long as I can stand without it
- 7:42Speaker 4: killing me, ride five races this afternoon, and after that
- 7:47Speaker 4: I've got a date. Thanks for your assistance, Vig, don't
- 7:50Speaker 4: mention it. See you later, Vic.
- 7:52Speaker 7: Are you seeing her again?
- 7:55Speaker 4: Annie? You're a nice kid, but that's all you are,
- 7:58Speaker 4: just a kid. And who I see, he has got
- 8:01Speaker 4: nothing to do with you. Understand, Yes, big I understand. Goodbye, Anny.
- 8:12Speaker 7: Don't worry, mister Temper. I won't cry. I haven't cried
- 8:15Speaker 7: since I was six years old. But mister Temper, don't
- 8:19Speaker 7: let him.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Make Vic throw a race.
- 8:22Speaker 7: He wouldn't do anything dishonest.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I know he wouldn't him very much, don't you him.
- 8:28Speaker 7: I believe in him with all my heart.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Let's go, Louiah.
- 8:47Speaker 5: We're not staying for the races, mister Temple.
- 8:49Speaker 3: No, we have to do Oh too bad.
- 8:51Speaker 5: I would have had five hours to figure out the first.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Right, and you can spend five hours looking at a
- 8:56Speaker 3: form sheet.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Oh sure, sure?
- 8:59Speaker 5: Oh in trouble by then, I can't see your horses, Louis.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Where would I go to pick up whatever rumors might
- 9:05Speaker 3: be flying around about horses and jockeys?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Almost any barber shop, But if you want authentic rumors,
- 9:12Speaker 2: I would drop in downtown on Honestyle, your friendly neighborhood booky.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I thought I was out of business due to a
- 9:18Speaker 3: slight difficulty with the court of law.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Well, the technicalities of such things.
- 9:22Speaker 4: I don't follow all the ways, mister Temple understand, but
- 9:25Speaker 4: the general principle I understand. It's like the song, They'll
- 9:28Speaker 4: always be a booky you know you may be right.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Helloell Simon Templar, a pleasure. Welcome to my humble cigar store.
- 9:47Speaker 4: How's business haven't sold the cigar in months? But business
- 9:50Speaker 4: is booming. How's things with you? No decline in crime?
- 9:53Speaker 4: I hope, no, no whatever, Just so we all keep busy.
- 9:58Speaker 4: That's the big thing.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Well, won't do you know about a horse owner, a
- 10:03Speaker 3: trainer named McIntyre.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Dad McIntyre, Anything you want to know? Olds Peter the
- 10:08Speaker 4: Great Dog had horse chestnut gelding eight years old. He's
- 10:12Speaker 4: at a one horse stable for years, has a daughter
- 10:14Speaker 4: fifteen and raised Vick Bokowski. The jockey.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Vic always rides for him.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Nobody else has ridden Peter the Great for years? Has
- 10:23Speaker 4: anybody else have owned the horse? Oh yeah, yeah, some
- 10:26Speaker 4: months ago Big Ed Climman claimed him, claimed him. Sure.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Most chief races are claiming races. You enter your horse
- 10:33Speaker 4: for say five thousand dollars, and if somebody puts in
- 10:36Speaker 4: a claim for him, he owns the horse. I see,
- 10:39Speaker 4: nobody would ever claim Peter the Great because they knew
- 10:42Speaker 4: how Dad felt about him. A big Ed did that
- 10:46Speaker 4: almost broke Dad's heart. Ah.
- 10:48Speaker 3: How did big Ed do with a horse?
- 10:50Speaker 4: He won a couple of races with him, but then
- 10:53Speaker 4: his legs went bad and finally Dad claimed him back again. Uh.
- 10:58Speaker 4: What about the jockey, Vic Saint?
- 11:01Speaker 3: All sorts of rumors float around about jockeys all the time,
- 11:04Speaker 3: all sorts of rumors. Mm hmm, that's all you can
- 11:08Speaker 3: tell me.
- 11:08Speaker 4: How well, if a real big bet came in against
- 11:11Speaker 4: the horse that Vic was riding, and Vic was on
- 11:14Speaker 4: the favorite, I might be time to delay off the
- 11:17Speaker 4: bed somewhere else. Nothing personal, just business.
- 11:20Speaker 3: I see, you don't know any particular girl who Vick
- 11:24Speaker 3: has been seeing.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Do you sure I do? Jack's live in a goldfish ball.
- 11:28Speaker 4: If one of them scratches his head with his left hand,
- 11:31Speaker 4: fifty horse players spend the whole night trying to figure
- 11:33Speaker 4: out what it means. The girl, a big blond named
- 11:37Speaker 4: Crystal Winters show girl, used to go with Ed Kleiman.
- 11:40Speaker 4: She hangs out at the bandbox.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Thanks, Al, I'll be a character witness for you some day.
- 11:46Speaker 4: That's a deal. I hope you'll get him straightened out.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Get who straightened out? The kid? Vic used to be
- 11:53Speaker 4: a nice guy. Maybe he still is. Dad's a nice
- 11:56Speaker 4: guy too, And I always like Danny. I even like
- 12:00Speaker 4: the horse. L awful, isn't it? Don't let this get
- 12:04Speaker 4: out saying it would ruin me in the profession?
- 12:18Speaker 8: Good evening, Vic, h oh, hi, introduce your friend, Vic.
- 12:25Speaker 4: This is mister Templar Crystal, friend of Annie's. This winder
- 12:29Speaker 4: is mister Templar. Pleasure, miss Winters.
- 12:31Speaker 8: And have you got a first name, mister Templar, so
- 12:34Speaker 8: that we can be old friends and then you can
- 12:36Speaker 8: sit down and join us.
- 12:37Speaker 3: The first name is Simon Crystal, and I'd love to
- 12:41Speaker 3: join you if Vic doesn't appear.
- 12:43Speaker 7: Abject.
- 12:45Speaker 8: This body's been waiting for all evening, isn't it, Vick?
- 12:48Speaker 8: This Simon sit here next to me and have him champagne? Vick,
- 12:53Speaker 8: you let us trun out of Champagne again. Don't get
- 12:56Speaker 8: some more?
- 12:57Speaker 4: What do you think I am a waiter?
- 12:59Speaker 8: Oh no, you're a jockey. You're too short to be
- 13:01Speaker 8: a waiter and too tall to be a midget. So
- 13:02Speaker 8: you're a jockey and you're getting a Champagne. Goodbye Vick,
- 13:09Speaker 8: goodbye Vick.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Okay, you're a little rough on the boy, aren't your Crystal?
- 13:16Speaker 4: Why?
- 13:17Speaker 8: Well, I could say it was to drive him away
- 13:19Speaker 8: because I'm bad for him, but i'd be lying. But
- 13:22Speaker 8: I wanted to drive my away, I'd have to be
- 13:24Speaker 8: a lot rougher than that.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I couldn't see why.
- 13:26Speaker 8: Thank you, Simon, but you can't. Little jockeys just happened
- 13:31Speaker 8: to like big, expansive, expensive blonde. I found that out
- 13:35Speaker 8: at an early age, which was quite some time ago.
- 13:38Speaker 3: And do you like little jenkins?
- 13:41Speaker 8: You're becoming very personal, Simon. I don't quite know what
- 13:45Speaker 8: I like. I like to think about it. I'm as slow.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Do you like big ed kyman?
- 13:52Speaker 8: I wanted't you ask? And you're standing right behind you?
- 13:54Speaker 4: Oh who is your friend, Crystal?
- 13:56Speaker 8: Mister Temple and mister klin and mister Klineman.
- 13:59Speaker 9: Mister Temples, shut up, Crystal, you're a friend of vex templar.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Well you might say that. Just put me down as
- 14:08Speaker 3: a patron of bracing, mister Clemond. I'm interested in improving
- 14:12Speaker 3: the breed.
- 14:13Speaker 9: Yeah, what you move in on? Vec Templer. He's not
- 14:17Speaker 9: big enough to object.
- 14:18Speaker 8: But I am he didn't move in on Vicky.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Shut up Crystal leaving mister templar. That seems to be
- 14:26Speaker 4: the majority opinion, My Crystal, every moment has been cold.
- 14:33Speaker 8: Yeah. Can't you say something nice like that sometime instead
- 14:38Speaker 8: of shut up Crystal?
- 14:40Speaker 3: One track?
- 14:40Speaker 4: Mind? Hello? What is it?
- 14:56Speaker 7: Mister Temper?
- 14:58Speaker 4: Who's this?
- 15:00Speaker 8: Temper?
- 15:01Speaker 7: I'm terribly sorry to bother you.
- 15:02Speaker 4: But what's wrong? Annie? He's dead.
- 15:04Speaker 8: I can't find him.
- 15:05Speaker 7: He never stays out this lake, mister Temple. He's always
- 15:07Speaker 7: out of the track early in the morning.
- 15:09Speaker 4: What time is it?
- 15:10Speaker 7: Four a m I didn't want to wake you, but
- 15:12Speaker 7: I've been sitting here all by myself.
- 15:13Speaker 3: One crazy Wait right there, Annie? Most likely or Dad,
- 15:16Speaker 3: we'll show up before I get that, but I'll be
- 15:17Speaker 3: right out.
- 15:18Speaker 8: Thank you, mister Temple.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Thank you you.
- 15:21Speaker 8: You don't think anything has happened to him?
- 15:23Speaker 3: No, Annie, I'll be right there.
- 15:33Speaker 7: Mister Temple. He never did anything like this before.
- 15:36Speaker 4: And when did he leave here?
- 15:38Speaker 7: You know I was here. It was around nine. Dad
- 15:42Speaker 7: left to walk over to Pete Stall. He always does
- 15:44Speaker 7: that just before he goes to bed, and then he
- 15:47Speaker 7: he just didn't come back.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Did you look for him?
- 15:50Speaker 7: Yes? I went over to the stables. I had been
- 15:52Speaker 7: see him in pezz Stall and I asked a few people,
- 15:55Speaker 7: but none of them had seen I came back here.
- 15:58Speaker 7: He was always in bed by mister Temple every night
- 16:01Speaker 7: of his life.
- 16:01Speaker 4: All right, Annie, we'll find him. Did you call Vic.
- 16:05Speaker 7: He's living at a hotel. He just moved from living
- 16:08Speaker 7: with us a month ago. I called him.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Is he in?
- 16:12Speaker 7: No?
- 16:12Speaker 3: All right, don't worry any we'll find your dad. Let's
- 16:17Speaker 3: go up to the stables.
- 16:18Speaker 7: All right, but I looked there.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Well, we'd better cover them again.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Somebody come in, Jad, Oh, Annie, what are you doing
- 16:31Speaker 3: out this light and temper?
- 16:33Speaker 4: Hello? Ell? Seeing anything of Annie's dad? No, No, just
- 16:37Speaker 4: came from a poker game with some of the boys.
- 16:39Speaker 4: But we didn't see him.
- 16:40Speaker 7: You know, he never stayed out this lay down every.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Sure, Annie, sure you've been down to peach Stall.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Annie looked that earlier, but we might check again.
- 16:49Speaker 7: It's right over here, easy boy, easy, Jad, he's not
- 16:59Speaker 7: here this.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I'll go in just to make sure.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Wait here, Annie, I'll come with you.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Easy, doesn't the old boy. He looks excited about something,
- 17:13Speaker 4: saying yes, I noticed, Well it doesn't look at it.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Hell yeah, open the corner.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Dad, I'm afraid so I got a lighter, ye, dear,
- 17:29Speaker 3: m not with a horseshoe. He's killed him. Instantly, keep
- 17:34Speaker 3: any app will you sure? Wait a minute, dear? I'm sorry, Annie?
- 17:40Speaker 4: Oh please, I'm howfraid that he is.
- 17:49Speaker 7: How not he didn't do it. He didn't do it,
- 17:56Speaker 7: he couldn't. I never believe he did it.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Maybe I won't either, Annie. I want to help you
- 18:17Speaker 3: make some fans.
- 18:18Speaker 7: Plan, mister Temper. What's there for me to do? Just
- 18:21Speaker 7: keep on going to school, have got another year and
- 18:25Speaker 7: keep on living here. Hip. I guess you'll keep on
- 18:29Speaker 7: living at your hotel, Dick.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I think that's the best. Annie.
- 18:34Speaker 7: Of course you're right.
- 18:36Speaker 4: What about Peter the Gray?
- 18:38Speaker 8: See?
- 18:40Speaker 7: I know Victorin's dad wouldn't raise him because he didn't
- 18:42Speaker 7: trust Dick to ride him. But I don't believe that.
- 18:46Speaker 7: So I've entered Peter the grave in the sixth Race tomorrow.
- 18:50Speaker 7: Whom writing this?
- 18:52Speaker 4: You trust me to give you an honest ride? Annie?
- 18:55Speaker 8: I trust you?
- 18:56Speaker 6: Yes?
- 18:58Speaker 4: Who? Thanks kidding? Thanks all riding. I'm riding for you.
- 19:06Speaker 4: That's all.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Did I do wrong?
- 19:10Speaker 4: Mister Temple? If you like someone very much, then you
- 19:14Speaker 4: have to trust the many. You just have to and
- 19:17Speaker 4: that's never long. Hello.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Well, well hello mister Templar, here to place a little
- 19:36Speaker 3: wager on Peter the Great for tomorrow. Word gets around first,
- 19:40Speaker 3: the scientific pastime, mister Templar. The players have to study
- 19:44Speaker 3: out things well in advance, helps them to lose their money.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Had any action yet on the rain? Definitely? Mister big
- 19:51Speaker 4: Ed Kleinman placed a very substantial sum on two other
- 19:54Speaker 4: horses in the race, which I promptly laid off with
- 19:57Speaker 4: the connection I got out of town. He's pretty sure
- 20:00Speaker 4: Peter won't win. We must know something. If he doesn't,
- 20:03Speaker 4: he stands to go broke. He's picked in the consensus.
- 20:06Speaker 4: He'll go off, maybe even money. Well what could they get? No, well,
- 20:11Speaker 4: what's that alone? You can't very well dope a horse
- 20:14Speaker 4: these days? So what does that leave the man on
- 20:17Speaker 4: the horse's back? The monkey on the stick? You know,
- 20:20Speaker 4: the saying Saint never bet on anything with two legs.
- 20:23Speaker 4: That's a bit of comment on the human race. All
- 20:26Speaker 4: I know is it's very hard to find a dishonest horse.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Well, Bigger isn't throwing money around just on speculation.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I suppose it's the size. What the size of the jocks.
- 20:40Speaker 4: They're five foot men in the six foot world. They
- 20:43Speaker 4: never get to eat a decent meal, they can't take
- 20:46Speaker 4: a drink. Everybody else is trying to get big and strong,
- 20:49Speaker 4: and the worst thing that can happen to them is
- 20:51Speaker 4: they grow up to be normal.
- 20:52Speaker 3: So if the ethics are not all they might be. Well,
- 20:56Speaker 3: that's understandable, A very good word.
- 20:58Speaker 4: You don't think Vick house Gay.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Will give anyon honest Ryan tomorrow, I'll tell you better
- 21:02Speaker 3: this time tomorrow.
- 21:03Speaker 4: How are you betting.
- 21:05Speaker 3: I'm not a better l I'm only interested in improving
- 21:08Speaker 3: the breed. Who do you like in the sixth mister Templar,
- 21:24Speaker 3: Peter the Great Louis? Well you like him and even money?
- 21:28Speaker 3: I will tell you after the race, After the race,
- 21:30Speaker 3: thanks very much.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Yeah, oh sorry, Louis. It's just that I almost wish
- 21:35Speaker 4: the race wasn't going to be run.
- 21:36Speaker 3: I have a feeling something tragic is about to happen,
- 21:39Speaker 3: and I don't know what I can do to stop it.
- 21:41Speaker 5: You know, I get that feeling every time I got
- 21:43Speaker 5: to the window. The better horse.
- 21:44Speaker 3: The girl's life can be shattered at fifteen and never
- 21:47Speaker 3: quite be the same.
- 21:48Speaker 5: Well, you know that's what they call a vlorable age.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Oh here we are. You got any plan in mind,
- 21:56Speaker 5: mister Temple.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I'm afraid it's too late to too much Lewis, and
- 22:00Speaker 3: if there was anything to be done, chance on a chance,
- 22:02Speaker 3: I'm going to check the clubhouse bar.
- 22:05Speaker 5: You don't think you'll find your friend Laddy.
- 22:07Speaker 3: And the bar maybe another friend louis enjoying the racist Crystal.
- 22:22Speaker 8: No, missus Simon Tempra down, mister Simon Temper, winning or
- 22:28Speaker 8: losing it is sistant. You divide the number of high
- 22:31Speaker 8: birds you've had by five, add three, and that's your horse.
- 22:34Speaker 8: Never failed, except when you've had enough high brows to
- 22:37Speaker 8: make it work. You forget how many highbrows you've had?
- 22:40Speaker 3: How many high balls does it take to forget this
- 22:42Speaker 3: next race?
- 22:42Speaker 8: I'm trying to find out you'll know something about it,
- 22:45Speaker 8: for Crystal cheer I did. Why didn't you ask me what?
- 22:49Speaker 8: I'll ask you and I won't tell you.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Were you ever fifteen? Crystal?
- 22:54Speaker 5: Here?
- 22:54Speaker 8: I was at fifteen? I started dancing a chorus man.
- 22:57Speaker 8: It's fifteen. I was married two months later. I was
- 23:00Speaker 8: back in the line. Was I ever fifteen?
- 23:04Speaker 4: Did you ever believe in someone so hard?
- 23:06Speaker 3: At her and have him take your.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Belief and throw it away.
- 23:10Speaker 8: You're talking about the kid Annie and her jackey.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Yeah, what's going to happen? Crystal? You know?
- 23:18Speaker 8: Tell me it's a funny. Why I don't nobody does.
- 23:22Speaker 3: One supposed once. That's supposed to mean either Vic throws
- 23:26Speaker 3: the race or he doesn't.
- 23:27Speaker 4: What else is there?
- 23:28Speaker 3: Either any gets a heartbroken or she doesn't it. If
- 23:31Speaker 3: it's an honest race, he should win easily.
- 23:34Speaker 8: All right, boy, Scott, I'll tell you why. Don't ask
- 23:40Speaker 8: me why. Maybe a girl can be pushed around only
- 23:43Speaker 8: so long. Maybe she can be pushed around all her
- 23:46Speaker 8: life like a mop. Maybe she can have Crystal.
- 23:52Speaker 4: There is much time. Tell me. You've got to tell me.
- 23:54Speaker 8: Ah, there's nothing you can do anymore. You know, my
- 23:58Speaker 8: boyfriend had tried me know how many kinds of a
- 24:01Speaker 8: laws he is. He wouldn't bet on this race only
- 24:04Speaker 8: because I was supposed to persuade poor little Victor loose.
- 24:08Speaker 8: He didn't trust the nervous that far. He's got another gimmick.
- 24:12Speaker 1: What you know?
- 24:13Speaker 8: He owned you to the great a few months back.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Yes, I know, cleaned him from dad neck. In time,
- 24:18Speaker 3: Poor old Pete broke down, so ed and nerved him.
- 24:21Speaker 8: He nerved him, took out the nerve and his saw
- 24:23Speaker 8: a leg, so he couldn't feel anything when he ran night.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Oh what happens to the horse? Nothing?
- 24:29Speaker 8: For a while, had one another race with him. Then
- 24:33Speaker 8: he let Dad claim him back. But after while the
- 24:36Speaker 8: leg begins to die. And sooner or later, if you
- 24:39Speaker 8: run the horse, one leg will cross in front of
- 24:42Speaker 8: the other in a race.
- 24:43Speaker 4: What happens to the junk here? I don't know.
- 24:46Speaker 8: He's not trying to win. The horse might not even
- 24:48Speaker 8: fall if he's out front with the whole.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Pack behind him, Great Candy, Does Vick know about the
- 24:54Speaker 4: horse's leg?
- 24:55Speaker 8: Nobody knows. Stept me and dig ahead and now you.
- 24:59Speaker 3: But Dad would didn't he? That's why he wouldn't run.
- 25:01Speaker 3: The horse kept telling Victor hold him back, even in
- 25:04Speaker 3: a workout. Must have been nice for him, knowing Pete
- 25:06Speaker 3: had to die.
- 25:07Speaker 8: Money, money, money.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Many horses are nearing the starting gate and.
- 25:11Speaker 8: You can't do anything about it. Too late, much, too late, Cristal,
- 25:17Speaker 8: what happened to night Dad was killed? I told you enough,
- 25:21Speaker 8: I told you too much. Did he come to the
- 25:23Speaker 8: club that night looking for Climon? Did he came there
- 25:27Speaker 8: that's all I know. I do anything more, that's all
- 25:29Speaker 8: I know.
- 25:30Speaker 4: That's enough. What's enough? Race? Ready to go? Crystal? Are
- 25:33Speaker 4: you so?
- 25:35Speaker 9: You've been talking?
- 25:36Speaker 8: And I didn't say anything about that, Honest I didn't.
- 25:38Speaker 3: I get up too late, Climan, way too late, And
- 25:41Speaker 3: mister t thought you want to see the raster in
- 25:43Speaker 3: the gate just a minute the way I want you
- 25:45Speaker 3: to hear this, Crimeman, anyone that would kill a horse
- 25:50Speaker 3: would have to figure on killing the horse's owner, tool
- 25:52Speaker 3: or get killed himself.
- 25:54Speaker 9: Mac and I got kicked by his own horse.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Everybody knows that you.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Expected Dad to show up when he found out your
- 25:59Speaker 3: nerve you and you were ready for him. I never
- 26:02Speaker 3: saw he already knows you shut up, no trick, Climeman.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Time horse who on a baseball bat makes it look
- 26:08Speaker 3: like a man's been kicked by horse, doesn't It must
- 26:11Speaker 3: have been quite a job getting dead back to the stables.
- 26:13Speaker 4: But then you're a big man.
- 26:15Speaker 8: That's a big man.
- 26:18Speaker 9: There's some templar. This doesn't add up to anything. But
- 26:22Speaker 9: you're just trying to make trouble for me. You know,
- 26:25Speaker 9: it's just a question of money.
- 26:26Speaker 8: Money, money, don't you know, honey, you haven't got that much.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You shut up, you know, Kleiman. I'm getting a little
- 26:34Speaker 3: tired listening to you say shut up. Go for the
- 26:37Speaker 3: track police, lawyer. Will you pleasure mister quite a minute?
- 26:40Speaker 4: That must be very heavy.
- 26:42Speaker 3: I like to use an alli, but there isn't time,
- 26:45Speaker 3: is that.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Just stay where you are. I'm getting you want to
- 26:49Speaker 5: try and catch mister No.
- 26:50Speaker 4: He won't go far.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Get the track police, attering lois. I've got to find any.
- 27:03Speaker 10: And there are At the start, it's speed Merchant breaking
- 27:07Speaker 10: on top, followed by Count Flavaci, Harbor Light quiz Me,
- 27:12Speaker 10: Fleet Arleen and Peter the Great.
- 27:15Speaker 5: And he wants to run.
- 27:21Speaker 8: He wants to run Merchant.
- 27:24Speaker 5: Peter the Great between houses harvelighte by.
- 27:27Speaker 4: One and fleet Alias is drawn up by.
- 27:32Speaker 10: Two lengths Speed Merchant by one, moving up on the outside.
- 27:43Speaker 5: Into the turn.
- 27:44Speaker 4: It's still Caravachi showing in front by one.
- 27:46Speaker 10: Speed Merchant with me and now I'm moving up very
- 27:50Speaker 10: fast in the outside of the Great.
- 27:52Speaker 4: He's second.
- 27:53Speaker 5: He's going to get the leader.
- 27:54Speaker 11: Now it's Peter the Great problem one Caravachie, Stream Merchant
- 27:58Speaker 11: third quiz me Rob.
- 28:01Speaker 7: Riding him. He's letting him wrong.
- 28:04Speaker 11: Turning home, it's beating the grade five falling speed virtuin

- 28:18Speaker 5: I halilite quisbe feet Alli and feet of the Great
- 28:21Speaker 5: winds that going along? It's from Peter the Great is.
- 28:28Speaker 7: Going down, you temper.
- 28:44Speaker 4: He's going to be all right anyway. He was thrown tear.
- 28:50Speaker 7: But I guess I better be going.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Annie, he wants to see you.
- 28:56Speaker 7: He does.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Thank you very fancy about gone in and smiled for him.
- 29:03Speaker 7: But what will I say? I mean, how will I act?
- 29:07Speaker 4: How do you feel?
- 29:11Speaker 7: I don't feel like a kid anymore. You don't think
- 29:14Speaker 7: you'll call me a kid again, do you, mister?
- 29:16Speaker 4: I don't believe he will.
- 29:19Speaker 7: But how will I act?
- 29:20Speaker 4: Don't worry any When the time comes, a girl always
- 29:24Speaker 4: knows how to act.
- 29:26Speaker 7: He thinks that this is the time.
- 29:28Speaker 4: This is the time, Anie, Good luck to both of you.

- 30:51Speaker 6: It's the Silver Jubilee on NBC beginning next Sunday, July First,
- 30:56Speaker 6: The Saint moves to a new time on most NBC stations. Yes,
- 31:00Speaker 6: beginning next Sunday, you'll hear The Saint thirty minutes earlier
- 31:03Speaker 6: at four o'clock Eastern Time. Next Sunday, at this hour,
- 31:06Speaker 6: a new show joined your NBC lineup of top mystery programs.
- 31:10Speaker 6: Martin Kain Private Eye starring Lloyd Nolan, and here he
- 31:13Speaker 6: is one of Hollywood's finest actors. Lloyd Nolan, Thank you,
- 31:18Speaker 6: ladies and gentlemen. Here is your invitation to join me
- 31:22Speaker 6: as Martin Kain Private Eye, my new role in this
- 31:25Speaker 6: station beginning Sunday, July first. Here Lloyd Nolan is Martin
- 31:29Speaker 6: Kain Private Eye at this same time beginning next Sunday.
- 31:34Speaker 5: This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
- 31:47Speaker 8: This is Andrew J.
- 31:48Speaker 9: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a
- 31:51Speaker 9: Man and his Wife. You're listening to the great detectives
- 31:54Speaker 9: of Old time Radio.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, some very good guest performances, and overall
- 32:08Speaker 1: I thought a very well drawn story. The mystery wasn't
- 32:13Speaker 1: so much, but the drama I think was pretty engaging.
- 32:17Speaker 1: In terms of the guest cast, Janet Waldo, I don't
- 32:20Speaker 1: know if we've had her on the program before, but
- 32:23Speaker 1: Janet Waldo was best remembered during the Golden Age of
- 32:27Speaker 1: Radio for playing the lead on CBS's Meet Corliss Archer.
- 32:32Speaker 1: She also starred in Young Love, which was a favorite
- 32:36Speaker 1: of my wife and Iz. We listened to all that's
- 32:39Speaker 1: left of that particular series. It wasn't hugely popular, but
- 32:43Speaker 1: we liked it, and she's most famously known as the
- 32:48Speaker 1: voice of Judy Jetson, though she's had such a very career,
- 32:52Speaker 1: and she's one of the few radio actresses who is
- 32:55Speaker 1: still living from the golden era. In her mid Night Now,
- 33:01Speaker 1: we turn to some listener comments and feedback, and Laurie writes,
- 33:06Speaker 1: regarding the Children's Crusade, I enjoy Tom Conway in just
- 33:12Speaker 1: about everything, and this is not any different in this episode.
- 33:17Speaker 1: The storyline line sounds so familiar. Do you know what
- 33:20Speaker 1: other series use this same story? I don't over radio.
- 33:26Speaker 1: It may have been some television show. But if there
- 33:30Speaker 1: was a plot like this that we've played, I've forgotten.
- 33:33Speaker 1: That's certainly possible. We've done one thousand and six hundred
- 33:38Speaker 1: plus episodes now, and so I could forget a storyline
- 33:42Speaker 1: here or there. But I actually thought the Children's Crusade
- 33:46Speaker 1: was pretty much an original plot to the same. But
- 33:49Speaker 1: if any listener remembers otherwise, be sure and let me
- 33:53Speaker 1: know and I will correct myself. Thanks so much, Lurie.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And then we have a question from Eli, who sends
- 33:59Speaker 1: in an email says, First, I want to say that
- 34:02Speaker 1: I love the show. I've been a longtime fan of
- 34:04Speaker 1: detective novels in film noir, but I never really realized
- 34:09Speaker 1: how extensive the detective genre was explored through radio. I
- 34:13Speaker 1: must admit I've come to prefer the purely audio experience
- 34:17Speaker 1: of enjoying these stories, especially the Saint with Vincent Price,
- 34:22Speaker 1: Philip Marlon, and Pat Novak. I've taken to writing a
- 34:25Speaker 1: script for a satire in the genre, and I'm very
- 34:27Speaker 1: curious to learn more about the music that was used
- 34:31Speaker 1: for these shows. Do you know anything about the sources
- 34:34Speaker 1: of the soundtracks? Are these jazz standards appropriated for the
- 34:38Speaker 1: radio stories or were they specific specifically recorded. Do you
- 34:43Speaker 1: happen to have a list of musicians or tracks? Is
- 34:45Speaker 1: there somewhere to purchase a CD that is specifically the
- 34:49Speaker 1: soundtrack to these shows? Any information would be very helpful
- 34:53Speaker 1: and appreciated. Keep up the great work. It's wonderful to
- 34:56Speaker 1: know that the world is populated with people dedicated to
- 34:59Speaker 1: niche interests, especially when they overlap with my own. And
- 35:04Speaker 1: do you ever listen to Garrison Keeler's Guy nor Private Eye?
- 35:09Speaker 1: It's a satire through back to the genre, but quite
- 35:16Speaker 1: entertaining well. An answer to the question, it really varied.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Most of the radio programs did use their own original
- 35:29Speaker 1: theme music, particularly you'll hear ones that listed composer The
- 35:34Speaker 1: Saint used a version of the theme that particularly the
- 35:39Speaker 1: NBC version really used one that was based on what
- 35:44Speaker 1: had been in the film. There were a wide variety
- 35:47Speaker 1: of different approaches. You'll have orchestral themes, organ themes, and
- 35:55Speaker 1: on NBC. You probably saw when you listen to NBC
- 36:00Speaker 1: radio detective shows of the nineteen fifties. They generally kept
- 36:05Speaker 1: a different overall theme music they would play, but when
- 36:10Speaker 1: it came to the incidentals and the bridges, pretty much
- 36:16Speaker 1: one detective show was the same as the other. It
- 36:19Speaker 1: really got very standardized. Unfortunately, I am not aware of
- 36:25Speaker 1: a CD having been made of the various types of themes,
- 36:30Speaker 1: though I did think about doing special just a theme
- 36:35Speaker 1: music episode might be interesting just to hear all the
- 36:40Speaker 1: different programs we've done in their themes back to back.
- 36:44Speaker 1: The many of them were quite short in terms of
- 36:46Speaker 1: the overall theme music. I have not really a big
- 36:50Speaker 1: listener to The Prairie Home Companion. I think I listened
- 36:53Speaker 1: to one episode back in two thousand and then. I've
- 36:57Speaker 1: caught little bits of it on those fews I've been
- 37:01Speaker 1: out and about, though I haven't necessarily thought of it,
- 37:05Speaker 1: I have heard the kind of radio drama routines going
- 37:09Speaker 1: on on there. But at any rate, good luck to
- 37:12Speaker 1: you with your writing. Thanks so much for writing in
- 37:14Speaker 1: to appreciate your kind words. Now, one other question I
- 37:18Speaker 1: was asked Listener wanted to know how many episodes we
- 37:22Speaker 1: have in the Tom Conway era. And while Tom Conway
- 37:27Speaker 1: actually recorded twenty two episodes of the Saint, only six
- 37:35Speaker 1: of them are in existence, so that means we actually
- 37:39Speaker 1: only have three more episodes of the Saints, So coming
- 37:43Speaker 1: in four weeks it's Michael Shane Private Detective with Wally Mayer. Now,
- 37:50Speaker 1: for those of you who are unfamiliar with our with
- 37:53Speaker 1: Michael Shane, and this kind of returns to the Listener
