- 0:19Speaker 1: Doghouse outside the stadium beginning at nine am, So come
- 0:22Speaker 1: check us out there. The Varsity Network app and the
- 0:25Speaker 1: Varsity Network dot Com also has all of the game
- 0:28Speaker 1: and pregame broadcast back with Jim morib and coach. Some
- 0:32Speaker 1: big plays hurt the Huskies on the weekend, Ty Felton,
- 0:36Speaker 1: that wide receiver, and they had a good group of wideouts.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Four times had plays of over eighteen yards. And I know,
- 0:43Speaker 1: you know that could be disheartening for any defense when
- 0:46Speaker 1: you give up yardage. How do you when you looked
- 0:49Speaker 1: at that on video and film, what did you see
- 0:52Speaker 1: and how do you plan on kind of preventing that
- 0:55Speaker 1: stuff from happening this coming weekend?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Well, it was pretty simple, not easy, but simple.
- 1:01Speaker 3: We didn't tackle well, we had you know, way too
- 1:04Speaker 3: many mistackles. We were not bringing our feet on contact.
- 1:08Speaker 3: We were leaving our feet, we weren't bringing our arms,
- 1:10Speaker 3: we were shoulder tackling.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And that's not who we are.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Who we were on Saturday, unfortunately, but that's not who
- 1:17Speaker 3: we were going to be. So it's a matter of
- 1:19Speaker 3: tackling better, taking better angles, anticipating speed, the speed of
- 1:25Speaker 3: the team we're playing and the people were playing.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You know, we didn't.
- 1:29Speaker 3: We didn't do a great job of that on Saturday,
- 1:32Speaker 3: and therefore they they you know, they hit.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Us on some big plays.
- 1:35Speaker 3: And so we've put a huge emphasis on it, like
- 1:38Speaker 3: we always do, but re emphasis this week, you know,
- 1:41Speaker 3: better drill work and practice and tackling more speed out
- 1:45Speaker 3: of our look teams than to try to simulate what
- 1:47Speaker 3: we're going to see on game day. Better angles, better finish,
- 1:51Speaker 3: better effort, you know, all those things. So it's never
- 1:54Speaker 3: a mystery when those things happen. It's usually, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 3: a breakdown in assignment, which I don't think it was
- 2:00Speaker 3: as much as it was just us not tackling well,
- 2:03Speaker 3: not taking good angles, not being disciplined enough in our
- 2:07Speaker 3: play entry and and and I know this, our players
- 2:11Speaker 3: take all this very very seriously. They don't take it lightly,
- 2:15Speaker 3: and we as a as a program, we'll get it fixed.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 1: The one the one thing, and I played a little
- 2:22Speaker 1: defensive back of my previous life. That first guy to
- 2:25Speaker 1: the ball, how important is he to get a hand out,
- 2:29Speaker 1: get some contact, slow the runner or the receiver down,
- 2:33Speaker 1: because if you don't do that, you know, these these
- 2:35Speaker 1: wide receivers in open spaces, they are so elusive it's
- 2:39Speaker 1: hard for the second man to get in there and
- 2:41Speaker 1: make a play.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Yeah, so we call that, you know, play entry and leverage,
- 2:46Speaker 3: you know, and it's dependent upon the defensive call, dependent
- 2:50Speaker 3: upon the play that's run and who catches the ball,
- 2:52Speaker 3: who's carrying the ball, and where they're going. You know,
- 2:56Speaker 3: you always want to put a net around him. And
- 2:57Speaker 3: it's typically it's you know, two outside, nine inside, and uh,
- 3:02Speaker 3: everybody has to do their job, everyondy has. Everyone has
- 3:04Speaker 3: to enter the play, enter that the you know, the
- 3:06Speaker 3: area where the ball care area is with a specific
- 3:09Speaker 3: angle of leverage. And uh, if you don't do that
- 3:13Speaker 3: and you let them get out. You know, if you
- 3:15Speaker 3: don't cup.
- 3:16Speaker 2: The ball.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And you're playing good teams like we were, with speed,
- 3:21Speaker 3: they can they can make it look bad. Quickly, and
- 3:24Speaker 3: they did that. You know, they did a They did
- 3:26Speaker 3: a hell of a job of that. And so obviously
- 3:29Speaker 3: it's something that as coaches we've got to do a
- 3:31Speaker 3: better job of emphasizing and we will. Uh And as players,
- 3:35Speaker 3: they've got to go out and they've got to execute
- 3:37Speaker 3: better and they will because they take it seriously.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And uh So that's not all of us to do
- 3:42Speaker 2: a better job.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Jimura willis you konn Husky's head football coach on Mike Chrispino.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Turnovers you talk about every week every coach does let's
- 3:51Speaker 1: not do it, but sometimes turnovers it's when they happen,
- 3:56Speaker 1: isn't a coach, because like you had the one at
- 3:59Speaker 1: the end of the half half that Maryland turned into
- 4:02Speaker 1: three points, And it just seems like sometimes when the
- 4:05Speaker 1: turnover happens, it's when it happens in a game or
- 4:09Speaker 1: where on the field that you can't overcome.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Well, you're absolutely right, and you know the one at
- 4:15Speaker 3: the end of the first half, we were trying to
- 4:16Speaker 3: be aggressive, we were down twenty to nothing. That's going
- 4:19Speaker 3: to happen. We have to go out and we have
- 4:21Speaker 3: to get them stopped on defense, you know, and we
- 4:23Speaker 3: didn't get that done. But yeah, you're right, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 3: you have to take care of the ball that you know,
- 4:27Speaker 3: you you you brought up your last two questions that
- 4:30Speaker 3: brought up really two very specific and important points, and
- 4:34Speaker 3: that is explosive plays and turnovers. The ratio of explosive
- 4:40Speaker 3: plays and the ratio of turnovers are the two most
- 4:44Speaker 3: important variables in either winning and losing a football game.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And we were minus three turnovers and we were minus
- 4:50Speaker 3: eleven explosives, and so when you put those two together,
- 4:53Speaker 3: the chances of winning a football game are pretty remote.
- 4:56Speaker 3: You know, especially on the road against the team like Maryland.
- 4:59Speaker 3: It's just really hard to over So, you know, creating
- 5:02Speaker 3: more explosives on offense, eliminating explosive on defense, and then
- 5:07Speaker 3: you know, taking care of the football and taking it away.
- 5:10Speaker 3: You know, we didn't. We didn't take it away. We
- 5:11Speaker 3: didn't come close to taking it away. And that's a
- 5:14Speaker 3: credit to Maryland. But we've got to do better. We've
- 5:16Speaker 3: got to be more aggressive at the ball.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, there was the one overturned fumble review, boy, that
- 5:22Speaker 1: might have made a difference. I know it was early
- 5:23Speaker 1: in the game, and you know what I mean, it
- 5:26Speaker 1: ended up being a wide margin in terms of the
- 5:28Speaker 1: final result. But I just felt like sometimes you get
- 5:32Speaker 1: in a game early on and something goes your way
- 5:35Speaker 1: that could really change what happens in the next two quarters.
- 5:39Speaker 3: It could We'll never know, unfortunately, you know, that's just
- 5:45Speaker 3: kind of the way it goes. So you know, we
- 5:48Speaker 3: consider and play the wood if game. But the bottom line, Mike,
- 5:51Speaker 3: as you know, is that there's no excuses. We have
- 5:53Speaker 3: to be better. We can't look back and say it
- 5:56Speaker 3: could have, would have, should have because that's not the reality.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And if if we do those things, we're never gonna
- 6:01Speaker 3: we're never gonna get better, We're never going to make progress.
- 6:03Speaker 3: So we're not in the business of looking back and
- 6:06Speaker 3: making excuses and playing what it could have. Shit, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 3: what happened and why did it happen, and how do
- 6:12Speaker 3: we fix it?
- 6:12Speaker 2: How do we fix it moving forward? And that's that's
- 6:15Speaker 2: going to be our focus always.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Well, we'll be back in just a moment to talk
- 6:19Speaker 1: about two minute timeouts, something new leadership which coach Moore
- 6:25Speaker 1: knows a lot about, and we're going to try to
- 6:27Speaker 1: find out about that in the big picture for Yukon
- 6:30Speaker 1: and football and going forward and we're going to find
- 6:33Speaker 1: a little bit about the Merrimack Warriors. They've got a
- 6:36Speaker 1: defensive oriented head coach. All that's coming up in just
- 6:39Speaker 1: a moment. This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on
- 6:42Speaker 1: lear Field.
