- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Emergency repairs are underway in CBS following
- 0:09Speaker 2: a water main break affecting parts of Topsail, the Anchorage
- 0:13Speaker 2: Road and Peachy Town Road areas. The break has resulted
- 0:16Speaker 2: in a sinkhole in the area of Topsail Road. The
- 0:19Speaker 2: town is asking drivers to proceed with caution and expect
- 0:23Speaker 2: delays in the area. The town warns of possible discoloration
- 0:27Speaker 2: of the water once repairs are complete. Car enthusiasts came
- 0:32Speaker 2: out as usual at the A & W on Kenmount
- 0:34Speaker 2: Road last night, and Carl Hamlin of the Newfoundland Antique
- 0:38Speaker 2: and Classic Car Club says it was a tame affair
- 0:41Speaker 2: just the way it should be. Last week's show garnered
- 0:45Speaker 2: plenty of negative attention and criminal charges against a 17-year-old
- 0:49Speaker 2: Corvette driver after he peeled out of the parking lot
- 0:52Speaker 2: and spun around three times in traffic. The club, which
- 0:56Speaker 2: has been gathering at the A & W on Thursday
- 0:59Speaker 2: nights for decades, has partnered with the RNC to have
- 1:02Speaker 2: a presence at the shows to help prevent bad behavior,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and last night's show drew a lot of people.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Last night was a good night. Of course, the weather cooperated.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Our time on this was getting short for this season,
- 1:14Speaker 1: but we had lots of cars out, lots of people.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And a big shout out to the RNC because they
- 1:18Speaker 1: had a couple of cruisers there on Kentmount Road last
- 1:20Speaker 1: night keeping an eye on the traffic. So things were
- 1:22Speaker 1: pretty tame the way it should be. It's an evening
- 1:26Speaker 1: of enjoyment for everybody to get out and see all
- 1:28Speaker 1: these classic cars and hot rods and everything else that's
- 1:31Speaker 1: around because there are lots of cars in this province,
- 1:34Speaker 1: lots of them around the city. And it was an
- 1:36Speaker 1: enjoyable night and I haven't heard of any issues.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The constabulary says no tickets were issued during last night's meet.
- 1:44Speaker 2: The opposition critic for transportation and infrastructure is accusing the
- 1:48Speaker 2: provincial government of wasting money in seeking an RFP for
- 1:51Speaker 2: the modernization and expansion of St. Clair's Hospital. The former
- 1:56Speaker 2: liberal government had a facilities condition index completed four years
- 2:00Speaker 2: ago by capital management, which recommended that no more money
- 2:03Speaker 2: be pumped into upgrading the building. Minister Barry Patton dismissed
- 2:07Speaker 2: that report as a political document and says replacing the
- 2:10Speaker 2: hospital is unlikely. Critic Jamie Korab accuses government of failing
- 2:15Speaker 2: to plan for the region's health care needs.
- 2:18Speaker 3: That facility condition index is out there already saying that
- 2:22Speaker 3: do not put any money into this. It's time to
- 2:24Speaker 3: build a new one. So that information is already there.
- 2:26Speaker 3: So I feel like we're throwing good money after bad here.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Starbucks plans to close 250 North American stores this week.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Chief Operating Officer Mike Graham says the locations targeted either
- 2:37Speaker 2: aren't delivering acceptable financial results or can't provide the experience
- 2:42Speaker 2: Starbucks wants for customers and employees. The company hasn't said
- 2:46Speaker 2: which coffee houses will close, and it hasn't said how
- 2:48Speaker 2: many of those are unionized. Starbucks operates several locations in
- 2:53Speaker 2: the metro region, as well as a restaurant in Carboneer.
- 2:56Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
