SPEAKER_01: I know there is a stigma to going to therapy sometimes.
• 0:03
SPEAKER_02: And I know there is a stigma for men than women.
• 0:07
  SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
• 0:08
SPEAKER_01: Which is why this guy says, or this, I'm sorry, this counselor, not guy, says, when it comes to counseling men, they do something different and they do it with golf.
• 0:19
SPEAKER_00: I'd had enough of guys canceling their first therapy appointment without even showing up.
• 0:23
SPEAKER_00: I'm a licensed associate mental health counselor, and here's what I figured out.
• 0:26
SPEAKER_00: It's not that men don't want help.
• 0:27
SPEAKER_00: It's that the second they picture themselves sitting in a stale office across from a stranger being asked about their feelings, something in them just shuts down.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_00: So I removed the couch.
• 0:35
SPEAKER_00: I work with men now in a golf simulator.
• 0:37
SPEAKER_00: Same licensed counseling, just a completely different environment.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_00: When a man is focused on a swing, his guard comes down.
• 0:42
  SPEAKER_00: The conversation happens naturally.
• 0:44
SPEAKER_00: He doesn't feel like a patient, he feels like himself.
• 0:47
  SPEAKER_02: It's brilliant.
• 0:48
  SPEAKER_02: It is brilliant.
• 0:49
SPEAKER_02: Well, it's brilliant for certain men.
• 0:50
SPEAKER_02: If you're a golf guy, this is absolutely perfect.
• 0:53
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 0:54
SPEAKER_02: And everything he said up to that point is exactly right.
• 0:57
SPEAKER_02: Women are by nature able to pour emotions out, feelings and and and anything else.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_02: Usually, I mean, it sometimes starts with another woman or a group of girlfriends, sometimes graduates to, all right, I need somebody more than my girlfriends to tell me, you know, because you know, the advice from your girlfriends, they're always gonna be rah-rah and you, you know, sometimes you need somebody that's gonna be there and be like, no, you are really making a bad choice here.
• 1:19
  SPEAKER_02: Right, absolutely.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_02: For guys, it's exactly what he said.
• 1:22
SPEAKER_02: It is the sitting and thinking, oh, this is going to uh, you know, this is gonna be agonizing because somebody is gonna be asking me about how I feel.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_02: And that's not really the way guys operate.
• 1:34
SPEAKER_01: I think another thing because you had said, well, this is great for guys who golf.
• 1:37
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_02: Well, it's not gonna work for me because I don't golf.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you want to go putt-putting, that's equally as frustrating for me.
• 1:44
  SPEAKER_01: But I have a solution.
• 1:45
SPEAKER_01: So why doesn't he he can do therapy in a car ride?
• 1:48
SPEAKER_02: That actually is a great one.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_02: Actually, I'm gonna stop you right there before you give more.
• 1:52
  SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_02: You put a guy in a car and uh or a truck and and you just take a you know a ride down the road, you might get more out of him than sitting in an audit.
• 2:03
  SPEAKER_02: That's a really good idea.
• 2:04
SPEAKER_01: Well, I think on the intake, you should even ask, what are some of your favorite activities?
• 2:08
SPEAKER_01: And it and if they say.
• 2:11
SPEAKER_02: Well, we can't talk in those settings.
• 2:13
  SPEAKER_01: Well, but you can.
• 2:14
SPEAKER_01: You can in fishing, you absolutely can.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_01: But then you can also very quiet.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_01: Right, but you can do it in an untraditional sense.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_01: If you ever saw this show shrinking on Apple TV with Harrison Ford, uh Jason Segal, that the one um shrink, he he does it very untraditionally, and Harrison Ford yells at him.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_01: He's like, you know, you're doing it.
• 2:33
SPEAKER_02: Harrison Ford yells at him?
• 2:34
  SPEAKER_02: What's that like?
• 2:36
  SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
• 2:38
  SPEAKER_01: He's like, you're doing it wrong.
• 2:39
SPEAKER_01: He took one of the guys, he took one of the guys to one of those boxing uh like boxing rings, like if you would go to, I think they had these at the mall at one point, where they were like boxing and it was getting your frustrations out, talking, da da da da.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it was unconventional.
• 2:56
  SPEAKER_01: Exactly, unconventional but works.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_01: So somebody around here, I feel like needs to do it.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_01: Take it out of the office, yeah.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_02: Take it out of the office.
• 3:03
SPEAKER_02: Maybe not just the golfing thing, although that's not bad.
• 3:07
  SPEAKER_02: That's a a big uh a big section, but yeah, that you're right.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_02: Do add a couple things that that's good.
• 3:13
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_01: But ask them, what are you interested in?
• 3:16
SPEAKER_01: Because your guard is always gonna come down.
• 3:18
  SPEAKER_02: What would you prefer?
• 3:19
SPEAKER_02: You want to go for a ride in the truck?
• 3:20
SPEAKER_02: You wanna, you know, because sometimes just being out, you know, with another guy.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_01: Right, is is you find a connection.
• 3:27
  SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's a good guy.
• 3:29
  SPEAKER_02: I like this.
