- 0:00This is Scott Becker with the Beckers Health
- 0:03Care Podcast.
- 0:04I I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:06a great health care leader. We're joined today
- 0:08by Susan Jacob.
- 0:10Susan's a pharmacy leader, director of pharmacy at
- 0:13NYC Health and Hospitals,
- 0:15one of the great public health systems in
- 0:17the country, a fantastic place.
- 0:19Susan, can you take a moment and and
- 0:21tell us about yourself and your career?
- 0:24Sure. Absolutely.
- 0:26I am a pharmacist and public health leader,
- 0:30focused on improving health outcomes at both the
- 0:32patient and system level.
- 0:35My work really has centered on building safer,
- 0:38more efficient health care systems with a strong
- 0:41emphasis on patient education
- 0:43because informed patients, Scott, are empowered patients.
- 0:47I'm also a servant leader at heart that
- 0:50was taught to me by my, mentor, doctor
- 0:52Vicky Powell from New York Presbyterian.
- 0:55I believe in putting my team first and
- 0:58creating environments where people really feel supported, safe,
- 1:01valued, and able to do their best work.
- 1:05Now over the course of my twenty one
- 1:06years in practice as a pharmacist, I've spent
- 1:09my career in large complex health systems, leading
- 1:12initiatives around medication safety,
- 1:15operational
- 1:16excellence, and access to care. And I'm really
- 1:19excited to share the news now that I'm
- 1:21now transitioning into a director of pharmacy role
- 1:24within a safety net health system in New
- 1:26Jersey this May,
- 1:28where I'm especially excited to support vulnerable populations
- 1:31and expand access to high quality equitable care.
- 1:34And at the end of the day, I
- 1:36don't just work in health care. I work
- 1:38to make health care work better for everyone.
- 1:41Thank you. And take a moment on sort
- 1:44of
- 1:44the the big trends in pharmacy,
- 1:48whether at a a great safety net hospital
- 1:50in New Jersey
- 1:52or system or a great
- 1:53public health system in New York. Talk a
- 1:56little bit about some of the challenges and
- 1:57trends that you're watching in the pharmacy area
- 2:00in in the ability to take care of
- 2:01people how you'd like to. Mhmm. Absolutely.
- 2:04I'm really focused on expanding the role of
- 2:07pharmacy and public health,
- 2:09especially in patient education,
- 2:11chronic disease management, and improving access for underserved
- 2:15populations.
- 2:17In safety net systems, we're really seeing how
- 2:20critical it is to address not just clinical
- 2:22needs, but also social determinants of health and
- 2:25meeting patients where they are and helping them
- 2:28navigate complex care.
- 2:30I'm also watching the continued push towards health
- 2:33equity and data driven care.
- 2:36Data drives decisions, and along with workforce sustainability.
- 2:39And as a servant leader,
- 2:41I think a lot about how we support
- 2:44our teams because when teams are really strong
- 2:46and supported,
- 2:47you see that the patient outcomes truly improve.
- 2:51And talk about the excitement of making a
- 2:54change to this new role
- 2:56and and how excited you are about it
- 2:58and and maybe some of your plans as
- 3:00you as you get going on on a
- 3:01new role. Sure. I I mean, I'm really
- 3:04excited about stepping into a role where I
- 3:06can expand impact at a system level,
- 3:09especially within a safety net environment where the
- 3:12need is so great and the opportunity to
- 3:15make a difference is even greater than what
- 3:17I'm doing currently.
- 3:19And over the past year, I'm really proud
- 3:20of the work around strengthening operations,
- 3:23improving compliance,
- 3:25and supporting teams through change.
- 3:28And I've been really intentional about building a
- 3:30culture where people feel safe, supported, and heard,
- 3:34and I plan to do that in my
- 3:35new, role.
- 3:37And I've also focused on reinforcing patient education,
- 3:40like helping patients better understand their medications and
- 3:43care plans, which directly improves adherence and outcomes.
- 3:47And for me, success, whether I'm in New
- 3:50York or New Jersey or anywhere in the
- 3:52country, is when both patients and teams are
- 3:55set up to succeed,
- 3:56especially in these underserved communities that need it
- 3:59the most.
- 4:01Thank you very, very much. And when when
- 4:03you look at sort of Susan, you've had
- 4:05this great career,
- 4:07great leadership.
- 4:08Take a second on what advice
- 4:11that you would give to emerging leaders. What
- 4:13what do you tell emerging leaders
- 4:15about building impactful careers?
- 4:18Absolutely. And, you know, my story is a
- 4:20little different. I am an immigrant.
- 4:23You know, my parents were union workers, and
- 4:26I'm one of the first people to go
- 4:27to college and get a doctoral degree in
- 4:30my family. And
- 4:31my biggest advice that I got from my
- 4:33parents and even myself is to really lead
- 4:35with service. Like, you know, be proud of
- 4:38who you are, but always stay humble.
- 4:41Especially in public health and safety net systems,
- 4:44this work is truly bigger than any one
- 4:47person. It's about impact. Right?
- 4:49So you have to put your teams first.
- 4:51When your teams feel supported and empowered, they
- 4:54deliver better care. And as a leader, you
- 4:57are nothing without your team. Always advocate for
- 5:00your teams, and it's not an I in
- 5:02a leadership, but it's a we. And stay
- 5:05connected to your purpose, like, whether it's patient
- 5:07education, improving access, or advancing equity.
- 5:11That purpose is what's gonna guide you through
- 5:13your challenges. And don't be afraid to grow
- 5:16into the next level. Like, leadership, it's not
- 5:18about having all the answers.
- 5:20It's about creating space for others to thrive
- 5:23and making decisions that improve outcomes for entire
- 5:26communities. And at the end of the day,
- 5:28I'm passionate about creating innovative care models and
- 5:32supporting pharmacy teams to practice at the top
- 5:34of their licenses because that's how we truly
- 5:37improve patient care.
- 5:39Mhmm. Thank you. And I and I and
- 5:41I love that.
- 5:42And just fantastic. Susan, what a great career.
- 5:45Congratulations
- 5:46on your new role. We're so excited for
- 5:48you, and and I know you do a
- 5:50lot of public speaking. It is clear why.
- 5:52You're just fantastic
- 5:54as as a speaker and a person. I
- 5:56I wanna thank you for taking the time
- 5:58with us today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 6:00What a great pleasure to visit with you,
- 6:01and what a fantastic leadership career. Thank you

- 6:13one of the very first Becker's health care
- 6:15conferences years ago, and, you know, I'm just

- 6:22of your, successes as well. And, you know,
