- 0:00Vampirism. The actions or existence of
- 0:04vampires. A vampire which is considered to
- 0:07be a mythical creature, one that subsists upon feeding on the
- 0:12vital essence of living beings, their blood.
- 0:16But what if I told you that there have been many a vampire
- 0:19legends over the centuries and all over the world?
- 0:24Would you entertain the possibility that perhaps out of
- 0:27all of them, one or several could indeed be the real deal?
- 0:32Today we will be discussing a very strange and honestly not
- 0:35very well known vampire case, one that took place back in
- 0:39Europe in the 1700s. The amount of witnesses and said
- 0:44duration of vampiric activity might just make you think this
- 0:49is the terrifying vampire legend of the monster of Medveda of
- 0:54Serbia, and this story is truly an interesting one indeed.
- 1:12Before we begin, I did just want to say I've been sick the last
- 1:15three days, so if my voice sounds a little scratchy, that's
- 1:20why. I'm on a bunch of Robitussin and
- 1:23some vitamin C right now, so we're slowly but surely getting
- 1:26over it. But if I don't sound like my
- 1:28normal self, I sound a little stuffy.
- 1:31That's why the information about the case provided comes from a
- 1:35pretty scarce variety of sources.
- 1:38Given the age of the story, I've done my best to provide you with
- 1:41the most accurate and detail oriented retelling of it as I
- 1:45could, so I hope you enjoy the content.
- 1:49Legends of vampires have existed for millennia.
- 1:53Cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Ancient
- 1:58Greeks and even the Romans had tales of demonic entities and
- 2:04blood drinking spirits which are considered precursors to modern
- 2:09vampires. Despite the occurrence of
- 2:11vampire like creatures in these ancient civilizations, the
- 2:15folklore for the entity known today as the vampire originates
- 2:20almost exclusively from early 18th century Southeastern
- 2:25Europe, particularly the region that is now known as
- 2:29Transylvania. As verbal traditions of many
- 2:32ethnic groups from the region were recorded and published over
- 2:36the generations. With the Treaty of Passovitz,
- 2:40the Habsburg Monarchy annexed most of Serbia and the northern
- 2:44part of Bosnia, territories which had been part of the
- 2:47Ottoman Empire. These remained in Austrian
- 2:50control until the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739, when the
- 2:55Austrians were forced to cede them back to the Turks.
- 2:59During this 20 year period, these newly conquered boundary
- 3:02districts were subject to direct military rule from Vienna for
- 3:07strategic, fiscal and other reasons.
- 3:11As a result of the devastation brought about by previous
- 3:14Austrian Ottoman wars, these areas were in poor condition
- 3:19with scarce and partially nomadic development and to
- 3:22attract German speaking Serbian settlers to the new territories.
- 3:26Many of the Serbs, especially those who had emigrated from
- 3:30Ottoman held areas, were recruited as militiamen, also
- 3:34known as high Dukes. These high Dukes were for the
- 3:38peacetime protection of the borders and for regular military
- 3:41service at war in exchange for unalienable lots of land.
- 3:46It was in these communities that the earliest well documented
- 3:50vampire attacks occurred, but with that, could there have been
- 3:54any credence to these legends? In the year 1726, a man named
- 4:00Arnold Paoli had just returned from a military tour in Greece.
- 4:06He was a high Duke and this was a type of infantry soldier.
- 4:09As I previously mentioned, that was part of militaries from the
- 4:13late 16th to the mid 19th centuries.
- 4:16They had reputations from being bandits to freedom fighters,
- 4:20depending on the time frame and the enemies that they had at the
- 4:24time. Upon returning home from his
- 4:26tour of duty, he had a wound upon his neck.
- 4:29This is one of the first things that Paoli's wife Meliza noticed
- 4:33upon seeing him. As she asked what happened, she
- 4:37was shocked to hear what his explanation was.
- 4:40During a patrol, several soldiers, including himself, had
- 4:44been attacked by what they described as a vampire.
- 4:48The creature had ambushed them as they traversed a thick forest
- 4:51during the night. The creature which he described
- 4:55had pale skin, wings and fangs. It had killed several of the
- 5:01soldiers, moving with insane speed and feasting upon the
- 5:05men's blood by biting into them. Arnold would be just one of the
- 5:10two men that would survive the attack, but being bitten, his
- 5:15fear began to grow. The common belief during that
- 5:19time is that if you were bitten by a vampire, you had to find
- 5:23its grave and burn it in order to prevent the curse from
- 5:27spreading. So, given this information, this
- 5:30is what Arnold set off to do over the course of several
- 5:34weeks. As he felt more and more I'll he
- 5:37spoke with locals and travellers alike to try to discover just
- 5:41what or who this creature was and where he could find it.
- 5:46Gathering his strength, he set out to fight the beast.
- 5:50However, upon arriving at its grave, the creature was nowhere
- 5:54to be found. Instead, Arnold ended up
- 5:58defacing its grave and ultimately setting it a flame.
- 6:03Believing that he had stopped the creature for good and
- 6:06stopped the curse from spreading within his own veins, Arnold
- 6:10felt victorious in his own mind. However, he still felt I'll.
- 6:16His cold sweats now coupled with bizarre cravings, persisted.
- 6:23Several weeks after these events, Arnold would be sent
- 6:26home and was now speaking with his wife and his native village
- 6:31of Medvita. Given all that her husband had
- 6:33discussed with her missus, Paoli was frightened to say the least.
- 6:38But her husband had reassured her that all would be well, that
- 6:42he had followed instructions to the letter to ensure his safety,
- 6:46as well as hers and the neighbors around them.
- 6:49The two would go to bed that night for what would be the
- 6:52final time. The following morning, Arnold
- 6:56would be found unresponsive by his wife and within hours he was
- 7:01confirmed to be dead. Shocked at Arnold's untimely
- 7:06death and her own transformation to a grieving widow, Melissa
- 7:10would have Arnold buried and would try to grieve him in due
- 7:14time, hoping that her late husband would find eternal
- 7:18peace. However, Arnold apparently did
- 7:22not. Almost as soon as his body was
- 7:25placed in a wooden coffin and what should have been his
- 7:28eternal resting place, and as dirt was sprinkled over him,
- 7:32Arnold seemed to rise from the grave, or so.
- 7:36According to multiple people. Within 10 days of his burial, 4
- 7:41people complained to the City Council that Arnold Paoli had
- 7:45visited them and they all, interestingly enough, had the
- 7:49same exact story. They all had received a knock on
- 7:53their door in the dead of night. Upon answering it, they would
- 7:58meet face to face with the departed Arnold, although having
- 8:02seen him dead and buried, he was none the less there, pale but
- 8:08alive and in the flesh. Arnold would then ask to come
- 8:12inside their home. As they spoke to him, they
- 8:16acknowledged that something seemed very off about him.
- 8:20Anytime they brought up his burial or his death, he would
- 8:24completely not acknowledge it whatsoever and just move right
- 8:28past it as if nothing had ever happened.
- 8:31He also had an air about him, something hypnotic sat behind
- 8:36his eyes. He would ask for a drink and as
- 8:39they fetched an ale for him upon looking around their home and
- 8:43calling his name, they all then reported being attacked and
- 8:48bitten by him, only for him to then rush out of their homes and
- 8:52into the foggy night. This bewildered the village
- 8:55council members. At first they weren't sure of
- 8:58what to make of the reports, and things became all the stranger
- 9:02when all four of the people who had made the initial reports
- 9:06passed away. And they passed away just as
- 9:09Arnold had, which was bizarre to say the least.
- 9:13With multiple corpses on their hands.
- 9:15The council would then order an investigation.
- 9:18They would speak with local military officials and would be
- 9:21surprised to hear that they had heard of this kind of thing
- 9:24before. And 10 days later, following the
- 9:27ultimate deaths of the four and approximately a month after
- 9:31Arnold's burial, the villagers, advised by their hand knack or
- 9:35their local military leader, banded together and would head
- 9:39to Arnold Paoli's grave. They would arrive at the
- 9:42graveyard on a cold and misty night.
- 9:46Upon surveying, it appeared that the dirt above his casket had
- 9:49recently been tampered with. Biting the bullet, they dug deep
- 9:54into the earth, it would make contact with the coffin after
- 9:58just a few minutes of Labor. Upon opening the casket, they
- 10:02would reveal Arnold Paoli. It would know some very
- 10:06interesting details about his body.
- 10:08His corpse wasn't decomposed and his veins were full of blood.
- 10:15Fresh, warm blood flowed from his eyes and mouth.
- 10:21They also found that his skin, hair and nails had seemingly
- 10:26fallen off and filled the coffin around him, and that new skin,
- 10:31hair and nails had taken their place.
- 10:35According to their beliefs, they believed Arnold had developed
- 10:39into an arch vampire, a vampire of considerable strength, and
- 10:44they believed that he indeed had been exiting his grave and
- 10:48feeding that the curse had spread to him.
- 10:52In order to combat this, after concluding that Paoli was indeed
- 10:56a vampire, they drove a large wooden stake through his heart
- 11:00and upon piercing his chest, he let out a loud blood curdling
- 11:05shriek and his eyes shot wide open and glanced at those around
- 11:10him. They said that his eyes were
- 11:12blood red like the devil himself, deeply frightened but
- 11:17further motivated to ensure that he couldn't harm anyone else.
- 11:21They would cut off his head, dismember his body, and then
- 11:25would ultimately burn his entire body.
- 11:28They then proceeded to go grave to grave to all of Paoli's
- 11:33supposed victims and do the exact same procedure to ensure
- 11:38that they wouldn't turn into vampires themselves.
- 11:41Although disturbing, the villagers believed that they had
- 11:45ensured their safety and had successfully cleansed their land
- 11:49of the plague of vampirism. However, this happiness would be
- 11:54all too short lived. Roughly five years later, in the
- 11:58winter of 1731, amid the snowdrifts, livestock began to
- 12:04be feasted upon by an unknown creature.
- 12:08The creature left two Fang marks upon the necks of goats and
- 12:12sheep, the very lifeblood of the village, their food source.
- 12:18Following this bizarre discovery, as people began to
- 12:21eat the livestock to survive the harsh cold of the winter, a new
- 12:26epidemic was sinking its teeth into the village.
- 12:30People soon became I'll after eating the animals, and they
- 12:34quickly complained of stabs in their sides and pains in their
- 12:38chest, prolonged fever and jerking of the limbs.
- 12:43They typically would only last three days after contracting the
- 12:46sickness, and the age of the newly deceased varied greatly
- 12:52from the very young to the very old.
- 12:55In total, 13 people would pass of this mystery disease in just
- 13:00six weeks. Disturbingly, a newborn infant
- 13:04had contracted the illness through their mother through
- 13:07breastfeeding, and upon its passing it was buried, only to
- 13:12be dug up and drained of all of its blood within hours of its
- 13:17burial. The villagers, concerned and
- 13:21scared, would report this information to their local
- 13:24military leaders and the responsibility would ultimately
- 13:28fall upon a Lieutenant Colonel with the last name of Schnezza.
- 13:33Schnezza, fearing the pestilence, sent for the
- 13:37imperial Contagions Medical team, roughly their version of
- 13:41an infectious disease containment team that resided
- 13:45just one village over. While waiting for their arrival,
- 13:48he began his investigation. Malnutrition was common in the
- 13:53area due to Eastern Orthodox fasting practices.
- 13:57However, the villagers were not malnourished, and as he
- 14:01continued to look into the matter, other reports began to
- 14:05trickle in of new deaths, violent deaths at the hands of
- 14:10this unknown creature. Two more people would pass away.
- 14:15Fear soon overtook the entire village, and families began
- 14:19staying with one another at night, often two to three
- 14:22families to a home. They would watch over each other
- 14:25in shifts in order to stave off whatever this creature was.
- 14:30After several of his own men were attacked on patrol, Schnezz
- 14:33began to believe the rumors that this creature could possibly be
- 14:38a vampire. Those who were familiar with the
- 14:41legend of them would inform him that the illness and deaths
- 14:45would only cease if the vampire or vampires were found and
- 14:51slain. Fearing that the citizens would
- 14:53abandoned the village if nothing was done, and upon the arrival
- 14:56of the Disease Control group, a new Commission was formed and
- 15:01this Commission included a military surgeon and two other
- 15:05high-ranking officers, and the investigation would be furthered
- 15:10with new intensity. On January the 7th of 1732, the
- 15:16Commission, along with village elders and military officials,
- 15:20would exhume the graves of the now 18 people who had passed,
- 15:25and what they would find would shock them.
- 15:28Six of the corpses were decayed and this was normal given the
- 15:33time frame of death, but twelve out of the 18, however, were.
- 15:38Not. Their veins again were filled
- 15:41with fresh blood. They appeared as if they were
- 15:44sleeping. Some had a pale complexion and
- 15:48others a light red complexion. Instead, their skin, hair and
- 15:53nails appeared to have fallen off and new hair, skin and nails
- 15:59had taken their place. Fearing the worst, believing
- 16:03those 12 to be exhibiting signs of vampirism, they would begin
- 16:07the cleansing the age-old practice of staking the hearts,
- 16:11dismembering the bodies, burning them and the disposing of the
- 16:15ashes. As they went grave by grave and
- 16:19staked each person, almost every single one of them screamed and
- 16:24opened their eyes revealing blood red orbs staring back at
- 16:30them before fading away. Following this event a report
- 16:35would be made and would be submitted further up the
- 16:37military chain of command and it bared the signature of five
- 16:42officers in total. The report would spur much
- 16:45interest in what was taking place and come to find out six
- 16:48other villages in the area. We're dealing with the exact
- 16:52same thing. So the investigation would grow
- 16:55from 1 village to a region wide one involving numerous military
- 17:00officials and elders of the time.
- 17:03Over months of searching and investigating for the root cause
- 17:07of the supposed vampirism. It would be concluded ultimately
- 17:11that the now deceased Arnold Paoli had not only killed the
- 17:15four persons of whom he had contacted, but he had also
- 17:19feasted upon several oxen. The new vampires who were
- 17:24created not only fed upon the villagers, their livestock as
- 17:28well once they had turned, however, they had believed that
- 17:33they had tracked down all those affected by the vampirism as
- 17:37they rested in their graves waiting for their next feedings
- 17:41and had ended their ungodly existences, ensuring the safety
- 17:46of themselves and furthermore, the region.
- 17:49The results of this report would ultimately help inform and train
- 17:53future regiments of how to deal with the plague of vampirism if
- 17:58they should ever come across it. This case, to me is so
- 18:01interesting because not only is it scary given the descriptions
- 18:05and the actions of the supposed vampires, but the fact that so
- 18:09many people and people of prestigious status within the
- 18:12military of the time were involved and they were the ones
- 18:16who made the ultimate conclusions in the report.
- 18:19It's also interesting that it almost describes vampirism as a
- 18:24type of disease, one that transfers from bites and eating
- 18:28the flesh of animals that have been bitten, with some people
- 18:31dying of its effects and others dying but turning into vampires
- 18:36themselves. It also describes the hierarchy
- 18:40of vampires in a sense that some are more powerful than others
- 18:45now. But is it true?
- 18:47I mean, according to those of the time, it's absolutely true.
- 18:51Now we know that superstition and lack of education in regards
- 18:55to the human body and decomposition are things during
- 18:59this time for sure that trapped air, body fluids, etcetera, can
- 19:04and will exit a body upon death, especially over time.
- 19:08And we do know that hair, nails and sometimes skin retract given
- 19:12the appearance of growth on a corpse over time.
- 19:15But if what they said was true, we do know the dead bodies don't
- 19:19grow new hair, skin or nails, and that their eyes wouldn't
- 19:23open and glance as if they were alive.
- 19:26I also have to say that the pale appearance and the light red
- 19:29skin on some is interesting because we don't usually picture
- 19:33vampires as having red skin. Usually they are portrayed as
- 19:38being pale. At least that's where my mind
- 19:40tends to go. And maybe that's just the pop
- 19:42culture thing. It's hard telling, and the
- 19:44descriptions of their eyes being blood red like the devil
- 19:48himself, is just creepy and terrifying to me.
- 19:51Like it just it gives me the chills.
- 19:53I mean, imagine something like that staring you down.
- 19:56Like, no, no thanks. So was it real or was it the
- 20:01imagination of the people of the time and the age in which it
- 20:04took place in? Ultimately, that conclusion is
- 20:08yours to make, but I do have to say it's made for one hell of an
- 20:11interesting story. That's for sure.
- 20:15Thank you guys so much for watching this video.
