- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:03Speaker 1: He lay the cable guy, and you're listening to tech
- 0:06Speaker 1: cock Radio. Welcome to another episode of tech talk Radio.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Seanda Weird.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Welcome back.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for being here. A couple of great things
- 0:17Speaker 1: to start off with. We got a whole bunch of
- 0:19Speaker 1: info tech stuff for you on this show that I
- 0:21Speaker 1: think you'll enjoy.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I need the mental unload, man. This week? Is I'm
- 0:26Speaker 2: so busy this week? Are you really? This is the
- 0:28Speaker 2: only night that I have to do something not sport related? Right?
- 0:32Speaker 1: And that's all week? It's games, right, and not.
- 0:34Speaker 2: A women's boxing men's basketball, Right, I've got NCAA women's
- 0:40Speaker 2: soccer tournament. I've got women's basketball versus USC on ESPN.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I've got football versus Eyracuse. Sports are coming out of
- 0:47Speaker 2: my ears this week.
- 0:48Speaker 1: So do you do you ever get in those situations
- 0:50Speaker 1: because you know, you play, say women's basketball, men's football
- 0:53Speaker 1: or whatever, and you have in the afternoon, you've got
- 0:56Speaker 1: a game in the evening, you've got a game where
- 0:58Speaker 1: you're just stuck there all day. Right?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Sometimes?
- 1:00Speaker 1: All right, let's get into some tech here. First off, well,
- 1:03Speaker 1: let's se it's kind of tech. We have noted. We
- 1:06Speaker 1: have talked about it for the last two weeks since
- 1:09Speaker 1: it came out the Coca Cola AI holiday ad. And
- 1:14Speaker 1: I'm sorry if you're like going, oh, not this again, guys,
- 1:16Speaker 1: but seriously, we have talked about this, and we've talked
- 1:20Speaker 1: about the fact that the people move a little funny.
- 1:22Speaker 1: The window where the puppies are looking out the window,
- 1:25Speaker 1: there's some kind of blob of red blob that goes by.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It doesn't really say Coca Cola. We're like, why didn't
- 1:30Speaker 1: they brand that?
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's a reflect Well, no, you so if you watch
- 1:34Speaker 2: it again, yeah, it's a reflection of the truck driving by.
- 1:38Speaker 2: At first you can see Coca Cola in it, but
- 1:40Speaker 2: then it blurs with the puppies face.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and as you get this.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Weird amalgamation that comes out the other side that has
- 1:46Speaker 2: nothing and it's just a mess.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And then the people walking if I've watched the video
- 1:51Speaker 1: over and over and over, like the people walking funny,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and then.
- 1:55Speaker 2: They look like the robot from Interstellar Tars remember that
- 2:00Speaker 2: walk the big block server from Tars.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Not like Robbie the robot who flings his arms around,
- 2:06Speaker 1: but no, but they they move funny. And then at
- 2:09Speaker 1: the the end, of course you you were the one
- 2:11Speaker 1: who brought it up, the truck runs over people you
- 2:15Speaker 1: it's kind of out of frame, but there's no way,
- 2:17Speaker 1: there's no way these people would have survived. However, here's
- 2:21Speaker 1: a new update. I've watched it over and over and
- 2:23Speaker 1: over and did not notice this till somebody else in
- 2:26Speaker 1: social media mentioned this, and then I went back a
- 2:29Speaker 1: look and looked, and it's like, you know one of
- 2:31Speaker 1: those games where it's what do you see that's different here,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and you have to both poke it out or you
- 2:35Speaker 1: have to find the ducks in the picture. I don't
- 2:37Speaker 1: know if you've noticed this, Sean, but the big trucks
- 2:40Speaker 1: as they're going down the road, the axles keep disappearing.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So there is there is there's a shot of one
- 2:48Speaker 1: of the big, you know, eighteen wheelers hauling all that
- 2:51Speaker 1: delicious Coca Cola. Their new holiday flavor is really amazing.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Their vanilla zero sugar is great. Yeah, it's super good.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But the back, the back axle that keeps disappearing. It
- 3:03Speaker 1: goes from two to three to two to three. It's
- 3:06Speaker 1: so weird. So again, something else to look for now
- 3:10Speaker 1: by watching the ad.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I mean at this point, I think they're just doing
- 3:14Speaker 2: it and letting all these mistakes go through so that
- 3:17Speaker 2: people just point them out and people just watch it
- 3:18Speaker 2: over and over again. I really think that it's it's
- 3:22Speaker 2: just a joke for them at this point. They know
- 3:24Speaker 2: it's gonna be bad, they know it's gonna be controversial.
- 3:26Speaker 2: They just don't care. Yeah, because people are gonna watch it,
- 3:28Speaker 2: people are gonna talk about it, ais all the hype,
- 3:31Speaker 2: So why wouldn't you do it? It's a great marketing strategy.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I think for them, it's just it's gonna get to
- 3:37Speaker 2: the point where it's like, if you do something not AI,
- 3:41Speaker 2: it's gonna be the cool thing to do.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Instead of AI is the cool thing to do.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Okay, So here's here's here's a big story though that
- 3:49Speaker 1: people are talking about Call a Duty Black Ops seven
- 3:53Speaker 1: and have you had a chance to try this yet?
- 3:55Speaker 1: I mean, I want to get back into the franchise
- 3:58Speaker 1: and play, but people are telling me just don't. Maybe
- 4:03Speaker 1: you don't want to, I don't know. There's a representative
- 4:06Speaker 1: out of California ro Kana that is concerned now that
- 4:10Speaker 1: gaming companies are replacing human workers with AI. It is
- 4:15Speaker 1: saying that AI generated icons, posters and achievements and the
- 4:20Speaker 1: new Call of Duty Black Ops seven are a prime example.
- 4:23Speaker 1: The fact that they're just saying, well, let's just throw
- 4:25Speaker 1: this in there, let's throw this in there, let's put
- 4:27Speaker 1: that in there. And you know, her district is Silicon Valley.
- 4:32Speaker 1: So they're really concerned that some of these companies that
- 4:35Speaker 1: are you know, gaming developers, are going to say, are
- 4:37Speaker 1: you taking the short route whereas you used to create
- 4:40Speaker 1: games with you know, so many people working on this end,
- 4:43Speaker 1: so many people working on that end, and now they're saying, no,
- 4:47Speaker 1: this game is full of AI generated icons, posters, achievements,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and some have even gone so far and I've always
- 4:55Speaker 1: loved the franchise is saying it's AI slop. And that's
- 4:59Speaker 1: a term that people are using now that some of
- 5:02Speaker 1: has said that thing would with Coca Cola and their ad.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's slop.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's because that's what it looks like. It looks sloppy.
- 5:09Speaker 2: There are a handful of gaming studios that are protesting
- 5:13Speaker 2: against AI because it is taking jobs, and it's taking
- 5:17Speaker 2: graphic graphic design jobs away. It's taking coding jobs away,
- 5:21Speaker 2: it's taking design and environment jobs away. It's it's in
- 5:25Speaker 2: my opinion as a gamer, I appreciate and this is
- 5:30Speaker 2: something big, right. It's like a lot of places use
- 5:33Speaker 2: AI for art, right. And in the video gaming world
- 5:38Speaker 2: you're seeing it a lot more. In the tabletop and
- 5:43Speaker 2: board game industry, you're seeing it a lot with small
- 5:46Speaker 2: time developers that don't maybe have the staff or the
- 5:48Speaker 2: budget to do a lot of or pay a lot of.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Artists to get their game out.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But the large companies that are coming out Wizards of
- 5:55Speaker 2: the you know that are coming out of the content,
- 5:56Speaker 2: Wizards of the Coast, Critical Role. Half of these they're
- 6:00Speaker 2: getting caught up in these things where they hire out
- 6:02Speaker 2: a third party vendor to make something for them, and
- 6:06Speaker 2: those third parties don't have the same restrictions on AI,
- 6:10Speaker 2: so then things start to slip through, and all of
- 6:12Speaker 2: a sudden there's AI being used and stuff when they've
- 6:15Speaker 2: been so adamant about not using AI, and then they're
- 6:18Speaker 2: not policing their own work that they get brought in
- 6:21Speaker 2: for a third party and fans are getting upset because
- 6:25Speaker 2: they're paying good money for art. And then also AI
- 6:28Speaker 2: slips in yeah, but they've all come out and said
- 6:31Speaker 2: we're not using AI, we're not using it because it's
- 6:34Speaker 2: not for our values, things like that. But then all
- 6:36Speaker 2: of a sudden, here's the c AI thing, and then
- 6:39Speaker 2: they're getting held accountable and then they're finding out it's
- 6:42Speaker 2: third party stuff. So it's like trying to keep tabs on.
- 6:45Speaker 2: All that stuff is way more in the video gaming
- 6:47Speaker 2: world than you are in the tabletop and board game industry,
- 6:50Speaker 2: but it's very prevalent in both.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I've seen ads on LinkedIn where they're looking for somebody
- 6:57Speaker 1: as a copywriter or layout designer or graphics and one
- 7:03Speaker 1: of the things that they're saying is no AI. They
- 7:05Speaker 1: don't want they don't want to hire somebody that is
- 7:08Speaker 1: reliant on AI. They want somebody who has, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: had experience with Cork or you know, Adobe or Correl
- 7:15Speaker 1: or any of the graphics programs that are out there,
- 7:18Speaker 1: rather than relying on saying, here, create me a basketball,
- 7:22Speaker 1: you know, with the sunshine behind it, you know, when
- 7:24Speaker 1: they want somebody who can actually take an image and
- 7:28Speaker 1: do this. So some companies are saying, no, no, we
- 7:30Speaker 1: got to put our foot down. We want to hire
- 7:31Speaker 1: people who know what they're doing now, whether they hire
- 7:34Speaker 1: that person say we just want to make sure you
- 7:36Speaker 1: could do it now use AI to make it faster.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know if that's what's going to happen,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but a lot of companies are saying that.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I have to look at it from my job perspective.
- 7:43Speaker 2: With AI, it's like, what are things that we could
- 7:46Speaker 2: do with AI. I can't automate my side of the job.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I can't automate plugging in cameras and setting up tripods
- 7:54Speaker 2: and like maybe one day at Roboto billing one day maybe,
- 7:56Speaker 2: but there's a lot of the physical side of my
- 7:59Speaker 2: job he can't do with AI. The things that are
- 8:02Speaker 2: going to be caught up in AI for sports is
- 8:05Speaker 2: going to be stat generation, graphics generation, so taking like
- 8:11Speaker 2: I give me these stats for this player and generate
- 8:14Speaker 2: them and it'll just pull.
- 8:16Speaker 1: If somebody could somebody could write code that could automatically
- 8:20Speaker 1: put that on the screen and have that running tote
- 8:22Speaker 1: on the screen and identify the players by number. And
- 8:27Speaker 1: I mean, let's face it, the technology is there that
- 8:30Speaker 1: it could do that, and.
- 8:31Speaker 2: That's how it's that's how it's working now. Yeah, I
- 8:34Speaker 2: mean it's but it's how fast can a human look
- 8:39Speaker 2: at all the content that's been recorded throughout the game?
- 8:41Speaker 2: Say there's fifteen camera angles, right, and all the stats
- 8:45Speaker 2: are tied into the metadata of each angle. That's how
- 8:48Speaker 2: it is. Now AI could scan that and you say,
- 8:51Speaker 2: show me all the angles of player three when he's
- 8:54Speaker 2: got the ball, and now you have a playlist of
- 8:56Speaker 2: clips of player three with the ball. Yeah, show me
- 8:59Speaker 2: all three three pointers. That's where AI is going to
- 9:02Speaker 2: come into play, the big one. And this is something
- 9:04Speaker 2: I've talked about talked about at work, is a handful
- 9:07Speaker 2: of the replay vendors are offering faux hyper frame.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Rate And what does that meaning?
- 9:15Speaker 2: I can take a thirty frame rate camera and it
- 9:18Speaker 2: will look at it and I'll scale it to one
- 9:20Speaker 2: hundred and eighty frames. They give me a smooth so
- 9:24Speaker 2: when I slow it down, everything smooth, right, looks smooth
- 9:27Speaker 2: looks looks hyperp.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And they charge for that. Right.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Sure, But the issue now comes, and this is an
- 9:34Speaker 2: ethical dilemma because officials replay relies so heavily on broadcast
- 9:40Speaker 2: camera angles and replay can you use AI generated camera
- 9:46Speaker 2: angles because if it's taking so say thirty frames or
- 9:52Speaker 2: sixty frames and making it one forty three whatever, however
- 9:55Speaker 2: you how many times you want to slow mow it there.
- 9:58Speaker 2: We're looking at things specifically to show so whether or
- 10:00Speaker 2: not the ball or the foot was on the line
- 10:04Speaker 2: or over the line. But if it's generating an AI
- 10:07Speaker 2: interpolating frames and now it shows the foot and it
- 10:11Speaker 2: blends it so it's on this side of the.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Line for this football, if that side.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Of the line for the next frame, how do you
- 10:17Speaker 2: know which frame was real. Trying to flesh out whether
- 10:20Speaker 2: or not this type of content will be able to
- 10:23Speaker 2: be used in sports broadcasting is going to be a
- 10:27Speaker 2: very hot topic coming soon because of this AI generation.
- 10:32Speaker 2: At what point is it ethical to use it for
- 10:34Speaker 2: a broadcast, whether or not it's being used for official
- 10:38Speaker 2: replay as a separate question, but can you use it
- 10:41Speaker 2: for the broadcast? Can you use it for an in
- 10:43Speaker 2: venue show? Could you put it up on the videoboard
- 10:45Speaker 2: and show it there so maybe get the maybe hype
- 10:48Speaker 2: up the crowd. But if they're looking at something that
- 10:51Speaker 2: isn't real, and you're weighing the options on whether or
- 10:55Speaker 2: not it's real or not, but the officials are looking
- 10:57Speaker 2: at what was captured and it's showing something different. Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 2: you're in this weird limbo of do you show it,
- 11:03Speaker 2: don't you show it? Do you use it? Don't you
- 11:05Speaker 2: use it?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Right? Right?
- 11:06Speaker 2: It looks it looks cool, but is it ethical?
- 11:08Speaker 1: I think for the upcoming Super Bowl for next year,
- 11:11Speaker 1: I think we're probably gonna be seeing a lot of
- 11:15Speaker 1: AI driven commercials, maybe even making fun of AI, which
- 11:19Speaker 1: I can kind of imagine that might be something. Somebody
- 11:22Speaker 1: asked me though, guy named Roger called the station and
- 11:25Speaker 1: he had listened to our show and he wanted to
- 11:27Speaker 1: talk to me about these this AI commercial from Coca Cola,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and he said, do you have a commercial that you
- 11:33Speaker 1: liked during the holidays. I said, I've always liked the
- 11:35Speaker 1: Coca Cola commercials. I said, I've always liked, you know,
- 11:38Speaker 1: the family commercials. But honestly, one of my favorite commercials
- 11:42Speaker 1: and it's on now and it is I don't think
- 11:46Speaker 1: there's any AI in it at all. I'm hoping I'm
- 11:49Speaker 1: not wrong. Is the three ladies that are on the
- 11:55Speaker 1: sitting watching the snow and people going down the slopes.
- 11:58Speaker 1: It's for Amazon, and one of the ladies buys these,
- 12:02Speaker 1: you know, seats that they could actually go down the
- 12:05Speaker 1: slopes on. It has warmth, it has feeling, it has heart.
- 12:10Speaker 1: That's I still even though I like that Coca Cola ad,
- 12:14Speaker 1: albeit you know, aside from the AI it was kind
- 12:17Speaker 1: of lacking in that this one had human interaction. It
- 12:21Speaker 1: just had a lot of heart. If you get a
- 12:22Speaker 1: chance to see that one from Amazon, you haven't seen
- 12:24Speaker 1: that one yet, that one is really good.
- 12:26Speaker 2: All the AI stuff just it makes me think about
- 12:29Speaker 2: we're losing human creativity. Sure, you have a marketing team
- 12:32Speaker 2: and they storyboarded this what they wanted, but then they
- 12:35Speaker 2: just said generate. They didn't have somebody sitting at the
- 12:39Speaker 2: computer designing it, putting their human touch into it, their
- 12:42Speaker 2: design feelings, their their look, their feel into it. They
- 12:46Speaker 2: just said generate and the computer did.
- 12:48Speaker 1: It, and let's see what it did. And if that
- 12:50Speaker 1: doesn't like, the.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Emotion in content is becoming so sterile, it's frightening.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It's almost going to be like the emotion that's received
- 12:58Speaker 1: as the emotion of the creator of that that scene,
- 13:02Speaker 1: Oh that's great, but is he is he feeling the
- 13:05Speaker 1: emotion that those those viewers will get?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Right? So it's like people are gonna want to follow
- 13:11Speaker 2: like a lot of times, people like to follow directors
- 13:14Speaker 2: based on their style, they like the way they feel.
- 13:18Speaker 2: This is trying to emulate that, but it's it's just
- 13:20Speaker 2: an empty, soulless feeling because there's not a human element
- 13:24Speaker 2: to it. That's been my take for a long time
- 13:27Speaker 2: since pretty much to say I was started. Go back
- 13:29Speaker 2: and listen to all our shows. I've been saying this
- 13:31Speaker 2: for a long time. You take the human element on
- 13:33Speaker 2: of stuff, doesn't matter how good it looks, it's still
- 13:37Speaker 2: gonna feel soulss. It's still gonna feel empty. And I
- 13:41Speaker 2: know it. I know it's hard to uh display emotion
- 13:45Speaker 2: and what's the word inflection across with with images and
- 13:50Speaker 2: texts and moving pictures and stuff, but it's there's still
- 13:54Speaker 2: an element there that it's going You're just you're gonna
- 13:58Speaker 2: feel empty.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 2: No, it was created by AI.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I'm just going to say this, and I wish I
- 14:03Speaker 1: knew more of the story. And I don't know if
- 14:05Speaker 1: you heard about this this week. There apparently is an
- 14:09Speaker 1: app that will allow you to have it. And this
- 14:14Speaker 1: reminds me of The Black Mirror, which was the series
- 14:18Speaker 1: on Netflix Still Great. There was an episode on there
- 14:21Speaker 1: where this company was delving into artificial intelligence, and you
- 14:27Speaker 1: were able to communicate with a loved one that was
- 14:30Speaker 1: no longer with us. And over time that got so
- 14:35Speaker 1: good as we've seen with AI, you know, over the
- 14:37Speaker 1: years and very quickly that it then created a robotic
- 14:41Speaker 1: character and then it created a fleshy type of organism
- 14:47Speaker 1: that was just like that human being. It's a great story,
- 14:50Speaker 1: Charlie Booker with the Black Mirror, you could watch it.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I think it's in season one. But there is a
- 14:54Speaker 1: company that apparently has created an app where you could
- 14:57Speaker 1: put the information in of your beloved one who passed Grandma, mom, dad,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you know, grandpa, and you could have a conversation with
- 15:08Speaker 1: them using AI. And it's like, you know, I just
- 15:14Speaker 1: is this really really needed? No, it's not.
- 15:21Speaker 2: It's you can't. It's from an emotional level, from a
- 15:26Speaker 2: mental level, that sounds like an absolutely terrible idea.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Because we have their voice, their likeness, and that's just
- 15:34Speaker 1: a yeah, it's not a good idea.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Or here's not a good idea.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Here's here's something. This tells you how far we came.
- 15:41Speaker 1: What was the number one movie this week back in
- 15:43Speaker 1: nineteen eighty four see if you know this one? This week?
- 15:46Speaker 1: And fall. Yeah, it was kind of tough fun Nope,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and it's kind of a little bit about what we're
- 15:53Speaker 1: talking about, you know.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Hold on, hold on all right, thinking about.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Technology and it's getting away nineteen. No, no hackers, No,
- 16:03Speaker 1: you're throwing some good ones out there though. How about sneakers.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I love that movie James Cameron's Terminator.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Oh hey, that's a great one too.
- 16:14Speaker 1: You got everybody talks about sign it with the robots
- 16:18Speaker 1: and they took over. But believe it, it was only
- 16:21Speaker 1: number one for two weeks, which was kind of surprising.
- 16:24Speaker 1: It was a great movie. But this it had me
- 16:27Speaker 1: thinking about some really good computer deep fake, which if
- 16:31Speaker 1: you remember the term deep fake technology that was big
- 16:35Speaker 1: between twenty eighteen and about twenty twenty one. And there
- 16:39Speaker 1: was an artist out there and named control Shift Face right.
- 16:43Speaker 1: You can look them up on YouTube. He was from
- 16:45Speaker 1: the Czech Republic. Did some great work, but he slowed
- 16:48Speaker 1: down over the years. Why because AI is doing all this.
- 16:54Speaker 1: There's one that he has if you get a chance
- 16:56Speaker 1: to see it, it's a terminator deep fake call roombo
- 17:02Speaker 1: Roo m bo. It has Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey and
- 17:05Speaker 1: even Stallone as the terminator. And you can find it
- 17:08Speaker 1: on YouTube. But again I was thinking about it, like,
- 17:12Speaker 1: how is different is deep fake technology to where we
- 17:17Speaker 1: are today with AI and how that's being used. So
- 17:22Speaker 1: I started doing a little deep dive on this, and no,
- 17:24Speaker 1: I did not use Network Notebook LM to do it.
- 17:28Speaker 1: But the deep fake technologies we had were just the
- 17:31Speaker 1: face and it was computer graphics that did it, and
- 17:36Speaker 1: you had to train your models and work the models,
- 17:39Speaker 1: and it could move the face and it really came
- 17:42Speaker 1: out really good. Whereas the AI that we have today
- 17:45Speaker 1: is the entire body. It can move all the movements
- 17:48Speaker 1: of the whole bit. But you honestly had to be
- 17:50Speaker 1: a pretty skilled visual effects artist to work the tools
- 17:54Speaker 1: for deep for the face swap deep fake technology. And
- 17:59Speaker 1: I mean now with AI video technology, it's kind of
- 18:02Speaker 1: taking that over. But some of that stuff that this
- 18:05Speaker 1: guy control shift face and some of the others that
- 18:07Speaker 1: were creating on there. There's one guy who does a
- 18:09Speaker 1: lot with Schwarzenegger and he's still doing that stuff. It's
- 18:13Speaker 1: pretty darn good, it really is. How far we've come.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Now, How how fun Speaking of that, how far we've come,
- 18:19Speaker 2: let's talk about socks.
- 18:23Speaker 1: If you could find a way to segue into socks.
- 18:26Speaker 1: That was the perfect segue. You will not believe what
- 18:30Speaker 1: Sean is about to share with us.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I didn't think it was real at first. I thought
- 18:33Speaker 2: it was a joke, like in April Fool's joke. It's
- 18:36Speaker 2: just fitting that Justin's not here, because this is the
- 18:39Speaker 2: type of thing where Andy and I both like out.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I know, and he's on Android now, but.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I have an Apple. I have an iPhone.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah right, we both have loved the Apple ecosystem for
- 18:49Speaker 2: what it is. Yeah, this is something that made me
- 18:52Speaker 2: even go, what the heck? Why is this the thing? Right? Okay,
- 18:56Speaker 2: I know they've made some dumb thing, dumb mistakes with
- 18:59Speaker 2: making like a nice nine hundred hour computer mount and
- 19:01Speaker 2: some other stuff, but for hardware and stuff, but this,
- 19:04Speaker 2: this just tops it. Yeah, that's just Apple partnered with
- 19:10Speaker 2: I don't even.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Know how to say. You say Miaki se Miaki. He's
- 19:14Speaker 1: an artist out of Japan.
- 19:15Speaker 2: An artist. iPhone pocket features a singular three D knitting
- 19:20Speaker 2: construction designed to fit any iPhone. It's knittedly knitted.
- 19:24Speaker 1: It's like something your grandma would make.
- 19:26Speaker 2: It's like an over the shoulder sling bag that is
- 19:29Speaker 2: a iPhone sock. It was available November fourteenth, so is
- 19:36Speaker 2: about a week ago.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it was available in iPhone pocket is what it's
- 19:42Speaker 1: called the iPhone pot.
- 19:43Speaker 2: To go to go to google it Apple iPhone sock.
- 19:48Speaker 2: It's the most ridiculously.
- 19:49Speaker 1: It's very colorful. I mean you gotta give it's got
- 19:52Speaker 1: some great colors. Yeah, but it's knitted and.
- 19:55Speaker 2: It's just for holding your phone and it goes over
- 19:59Speaker 2: your it's it looks ridiculous for one and it's two
- 20:05Speaker 2: hundred and forty dollars.
- 20:07Speaker 1: For a sock. This is gonna create some excellent.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Short strap the short strap one hundred and the long
- 20:14Speaker 2: strap two nine.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Apple stores were carrying it. But here's what's even more amazing.
- 20:20Speaker 2: It's so loud because it's just like, I don't get it.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Here's what I'm thinking, John, this is going to cause
- 20:31Speaker 1: so many knockoffs that are gonna pop because seriously, the
- 20:36Speaker 1: Green Valley Recreation Knitting Club, I'm sure there's one could
- 20:39Speaker 1: be making this right like right now and start selling
- 20:43Speaker 1: them at events.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Somebody's Grandma's gonna be sew them on Etsy in two days.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you just oh, I can make a sock. How perfect?
- 20:50Speaker 2: I'm sure, it's like it'd be interesting to see if
- 20:54Speaker 2: anybody's already designed something like this right on Etsy and
- 20:58Speaker 2: now they're gonna go wait a minute, Apple, this looks
- 21:00Speaker 2: like mine. Yeah, fact and something against Apple's lawyer.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Somebody could make it, well, somebody could make it for
- 21:05Speaker 1: their Android device or a tablet or I mean, if
- 21:08Speaker 1: it's gonna become popular, somebody could wear it. I did
- 21:11Speaker 1: not see any branding on it, did you. I mean
- 21:14Speaker 1: I was looking.
- 21:15Speaker 2: There's one there's one small tag on the side, but
- 21:17Speaker 2: I can't without looking at it.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't really see.
- 21:21Speaker 2: In detail like what the late label says, but it's
- 21:23Speaker 2: not Apple brand. Doesn't look Apple branded.
- 21:25Speaker 1: No, So I'm thinking you'd be walking around and feel
- 21:28Speaker 1: like you're in fashion because oh, you've got one of those,
- 21:31Speaker 1: which I'm wondering are they going to restock or is
- 21:34Speaker 1: it just limited that for two hundred and you know
- 21:37Speaker 1: thirty bucks. Now you gotta sock you can carry your
- 21:39Speaker 1: iPhone with and if anything, it would make a great
- 21:42Speaker 1: sling if you get mad at somebody just.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, I just I don't.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Which okay, but if we gotta go to a break.
- 21:52Speaker 1: But that reminds me Sean It asked the question, Okay,
- 21:56Speaker 1: we're in November, right, we're towards the end of November.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Where is Microsoft and it's ugly sweaters? We have not
- 22:03Speaker 1: We've not seen.
- 22:05Speaker 2: And find any information on it? Right for free show? Yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 2: so where are you Microsoft? Because I'm probably gonna buy it?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Right, We're gonna take a break. We'll be back with
- 22:13Speaker 1: more of tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Sean to Weard. Find us on the web at tech
- 22:18Speaker 2: talk radio dot com and like us on your favorite
- 22:20Speaker 2: podcasting platform.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And now back to tech talk Radio.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Thanks via help and keep up the good work.
- 22:25Speaker 1: You got a great show.
- 22:28Speaker 2: So we were on the topic of Apple.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the last and the sock the nice But.
- 22:35Speaker 2: We've got a listener question, all right. Abigail from Green
- 22:39Speaker 2: Valley asks us she's been doing a lot more work
- 22:43Speaker 2: on her iPad lately. She has an iPhone, but she
- 22:45Speaker 2: doesn't use it for work. The iPad is more convenient
- 22:47Speaker 2: to take with her their laptop. The only wish I
- 22:49Speaker 2: had for my iPad and with my laptop, which is
- 22:52Speaker 2: a PC, is if I had an internet connection. I
- 22:56Speaker 2: hear your show not really big fans of connecting coffee
- 22:58Speaker 2: shops for internet. No, public Internet's not always great, but
- 23:03Speaker 2: I do have an occasional meeting at one. What are
- 23:04Speaker 2: my alternatives?
- 23:05Speaker 1: Oh?
- 23:06Speaker 2: Okay, no, your alternatives really are. You can get an
- 23:13Speaker 2: iPad that has a cellular connection.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I have. I'm my iPad. Actually it's a second
- 23:18Speaker 1: gin and I know if I wanted to, I could
- 23:21Speaker 1: have set that up with a self connection. Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I have an iPad Mini that has a cell connection.
- 23:25Speaker 2: It's been great. We don't we don't use it. We
- 23:28Speaker 2: used it for the two years that we had it
- 23:29Speaker 2: when we bought it. Wherever we got tied into that
- 23:32Speaker 2: plane with the horizon. But yeah, I would go look
- 23:36Speaker 2: at your cellular options for the iPad.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Well, okay, what about this too? Is this possible? She
- 23:41Speaker 1: got said she has an iPhone, but she don't want
- 23:43Speaker 1: to do the work on the iPhone. She wants to
- 23:45Speaker 1: do it on the iPad, right, And if she's at
- 23:48Speaker 1: a coffee shop, she don't want it to connect to
- 23:50Speaker 1: the coffee shop WiFi. Could she not? And it depends
- 23:53Speaker 1: on the carrier, I believe set up her iPhone as
- 23:56Speaker 1: a hotspot and then connect her iPad to the iPhone.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Correct, Yes, you can hotspot. You can hotspot your iPhone
- 24:04Speaker 2: depending on which plan you have and how many devices
- 24:07Speaker 2: and connect to it and all that stuff.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Some carriers may not allow that, so yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Right, some may not. And depending on if the is
- 24:13Speaker 2: the cell phone single good at your coffee shop? Does
- 24:15Speaker 2: it stink? Is it completely concrete? Does the cell phone
- 24:18Speaker 2: quality even good in the coffee shop? That's the question.
- 24:22Speaker 2: But yes, you can tether your iPhone so you can
- 24:24Speaker 2: plug it in via a USB and share your Internet
- 24:27Speaker 2: from your phone via USB to your computer. Or wait
- 24:32Speaker 2: a few months and see if Apple's rumored cheaper MacBook
- 24:38Speaker 2: you're looking at a butt. Apple is rumored to be
- 24:41Speaker 2: producing a cheaper iMac which will feature the A eighteen chip,
- 24:46Speaker 2: which is the chip that's used in phones, which is
- 24:49Speaker 2: they're saying is equal to, if not better than, the
- 24:52Speaker 2: M one Max, which is crazy to think about.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Wow, So if you're not doing anything.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Graphically intensive, not doing any three D rendering gaming, et cetera,
- 25:00Speaker 2: that could power display, have really good battery life. And
- 25:04Speaker 2: they're rumoring it that it will have an onboard SIM
- 25:07Speaker 2: as well, so anim so you could bring in your
- 25:09Speaker 2: laptop and have cell phone. Think about it, right, it'd
- 25:12Speaker 2: be kind of cool to be able to bring your laptop,
- 25:15Speaker 2: turn it on and be connected to five G LTE
- 25:18Speaker 2: or four G whatever whatever. The next generation of cell
- 25:22Speaker 2: phone connectivity is going to be, right, Do you have options? Right?
- 25:25Speaker 2: You have options? Right? Get an iPad with cellular connectivity,
- 25:28Speaker 2: hotspot your phone to your laptop. Wait and see if
- 25:33Speaker 2: Apple's rumored a eighteen Mac MacBook comes around and has
- 25:38Speaker 2: cell phone connectivity in it. You have some options there, So.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Oh that would be pretty awesome. Then you'd be able
- 25:44Speaker 1: to use it pretty much anywhere you get a signal.
- 25:46Speaker 1: If you get a good signal and you're anywhere, yeah,
- 25:49Speaker 1: that would be it. You don't have to rely. Now.
- 25:51Speaker 1: One other thing that she could do in the meantime,
- 25:55Speaker 1: if she wants to use the coffee shop WiFi VPN,
- 25:58Speaker 1: I mean I'm a VPN. Yeah, get a VPN. There's
- 26:03Speaker 1: there's different choices out there. Some people will say you
- 26:05Speaker 1: know NORD, Others will say semantic. Others will you know,
- 26:09Speaker 1: say you know Viper, whichever one.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I use, malwar bite CVPN.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Oh that's trying to do one.
- 26:15Speaker 2: I I have their plan that gives me the VPNs
- 26:17Speaker 2: if I ever need to be remote and connected via
- 26:20Speaker 2: I can just connect with malur Bites VPN. It's part
- 26:23Speaker 2: of my plan. But yeah, Nord, there's tons, there's tons
- 26:28Speaker 2: of good ones. Don't just go search free VPN.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah you might, you.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Might get some UNSULLI you know, some some pretty gross websites,
- 26:36Speaker 2: but yeah, just do your research, but stay stay close
- 26:40Speaker 2: to the big the big name brands for VPN and
- 26:42Speaker 2: you'll be just fine. All right.
- 26:43Speaker 1: That one came from Abigail in Green Valley. Here's one
- 26:46Speaker 1: real quickly, because I know that you have experience in
- 26:49Speaker 1: this Sean. This is from Ted in Clarita. He said,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I found some old film, undeveloped thirty five millimeter. Any
- 26:57Speaker 1: recommendations where to get developed? I mean people probably gonna
- 27:00Speaker 1: say Walgreens, But I you I had done something like
- 27:05Speaker 1: this not long ago, didn't you? Or was it one
- 27:07Speaker 1: twenty or one ten film that you were working with?
- 27:10Speaker 1: What was it?
- 27:10Speaker 2: So? So, if it's unprocessed film, right, if it's still
- 27:15Speaker 2: in the roll, there is a website that I used
- 27:19Speaker 2: called Indie Film Lab.
- 27:21Speaker 1: All right, and they will take the role.
- 27:23Speaker 2: You've mail it to them, They ship it to you
- 27:26Speaker 2: and they either they process.
- 27:29Speaker 1: It for you and just give you the negatives, right.
- 27:31Speaker 2: They process and scan them. They process and scan and
- 27:36Speaker 2: do you find touches to that? Like they have a
- 27:38Speaker 2: couple of different tiers for them. I off to pull it up.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I don't have it and pulled up. But Indie film,
- 27:41Speaker 2: I just look it up, Indie Film Lab, film processing.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I think it was about ten dollars a roll.
- 27:46Speaker 1: To be honesty, I'm gonna.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Try to find their prices while we talk.
- 27:49Speaker 1: But right, Oh, that's good services, all right.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like thirty five millimeter uncorrected is twelve
- 27:59Speaker 2: dollars for color. If it's black and white, it's twenty
- 28:03Speaker 2: one black and White's just a little bit different process
- 28:05Speaker 2: for developing because the chemicals are different than they do. Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 2: so it looks like it's about pre cut film scan only,
- 28:15Speaker 2: meaning they just give you the pre uncut roll. Right,
- 28:20Speaker 2: it's fifteen bucks uncut scan only meaning they develop it
- 28:24Speaker 2: and just give you a whole roll, a long roll
- 28:26Speaker 2: of your threat is eleven dollars. So that's what I did.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Oh wow, all right, five milimeter.
- 28:31Speaker 1: When you say that, give your whole role, it's like
- 28:33Speaker 1: a negative you mean.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so like they develop, they take the role out
- 28:37Speaker 2: of the film, right, and they develop it and they
- 28:39Speaker 2: don't cut it.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Okay, all right.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Just you just have a big long roll of a
- 28:46Speaker 2: negative and then you can cut it. You can cut
- 28:48Speaker 2: it up yourself or you can yeah right, yeah there.
- 28:54Speaker 2: So indie film lab dot com, all right, check them out.
- 28:59Speaker 2: They can do three five millimeters, six by four, six
- 29:02Speaker 2: by six, six by seven, six by nine, six by twelve,
- 29:04Speaker 2: six by seven, They can do all sorts of stuff.
- 29:08Speaker 2: This is just film though. That doesn't look like it's
- 29:10Speaker 2: eight milimeter. It just looks like it's like photo stills,
- 29:13Speaker 2: not did not movie stills.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Oh okay, all right, Yeah, that'd be kind of cool too,
- 29:18Speaker 1: because I know a lot of people want to want
- 29:19Speaker 1: to do that kind of thing and get their photos
- 29:21Speaker 1: done and you know, you find that role of film.
- 29:24Speaker 1: You don't know, you're sitting there thinking what's on this? Yeah?
- 29:28Speaker 1: What did I shoot with this? That it's stuck in
- 29:30Speaker 1: the back of a drawer and you know this is
- 29:32Speaker 1: family vacation, is it?
- 29:34Speaker 3: Uh?
- 29:35Speaker 1: You know, must say your your favorite car at a
- 29:37Speaker 1: car show. So that'd be kind of cool to do.
- 29:39Speaker 2: All right, we got it, and it says like the
- 29:41Speaker 2: turnaround time right during their non peak seagus in which
- 29:44Speaker 2: is January to May. Uh, what if you send in
- 29:49Speaker 2: one to twenty five roles, so you can send in
- 29:51Speaker 2: twenty five rolls of film if you want to do uh,
- 29:53Speaker 2: you can expect scans in five to seven days.
- 29:55Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna say a big shout out and congratulations.
- 29:58Speaker 1: We got to get them on the show. And to
- 30:00Speaker 1: Chase Roberts. Chase Roberts from Hackey Labs. He's a guy
- 30:04Speaker 1: who put out these books. The books are first off
- 30:08Speaker 1: Computer Engineering for Big Babies and then of course Computer
- 30:12Speaker 1: Engineering for Babies from Hackey Labs. He is now. He
- 30:16Speaker 1: told us about this, He told.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Us about the he spoiled it on this show.
- 30:20Speaker 1: He did. He said what his next book was going to.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Be Mechanical Engineering for Babies.
- 30:25Speaker 1: So well, it's actually simple machines made simple and it
- 30:29Speaker 1: just shows kids like those books are laid out, but
- 30:33Speaker 1: it shows them levees and pulleys and you know, movements
- 30:38Speaker 1: and a wheel, how a wheel works and can't interact.
- 30:42Speaker 1: It's a great It really is a good book for
- 30:45Speaker 1: the young kids. And I guess it's available now Hackey Labs.
- 30:48Speaker 1: So we're gonna get Chase back on the show so
- 30:50Speaker 1: we can talk about.
- 30:51Speaker 2: It a little more.
- 30:52Speaker 1: So did you release so you're gonna.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Get it because it's it's I fundamentally believe in what
- 30:58Speaker 2: he's doing.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Yeah, the Computer Engineering.
- 31:02Speaker 2: For Babies book blew my mind when I got it.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I enjoyed playing with it, and Max and Daniel both
- 31:09Speaker 2: loved it. The logic behind the books is really cool
- 31:13Speaker 2: and it just teaches basic functions. It's it's just it's
- 31:17Speaker 2: really really cool and it's weird to think like these
- 31:22Speaker 2: little functions. Okay, they're just functions, right, but it's like
- 31:26Speaker 2: it's fundamental functions of how things work.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Then that get right, teaching.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Critical critical theory just from a kid's book. It's seven
- 31:37Speaker 2: pages long, but it just it's a book that I'd
- 31:42Speaker 2: never seen design like that before. Just a very creative
- 31:45Speaker 2: way to get kids involved in one reading also pushing buttons.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Kids love pushing buttons.
- 31:54Speaker 2: And then coming up with a second book, Computer Engineering
- 31:57Speaker 2: for Big Babies, taking logic gating and memory reads and
- 32:00Speaker 2: memory rights and tying it into a book that makes sense.
- 32:04Speaker 2: And then you're changing the colors on this page, and
- 32:07Speaker 2: then the next page you're writing those colors to the
- 32:09Speaker 2: page and.
- 32:09Speaker 1: It's just it's did they did the kids? Did the
- 32:13Speaker 1: kids get a chance to play around with the book
- 32:15Speaker 1: at all? Did you get I mean, I put it
- 32:17Speaker 1: in front of my you know, my four year old
- 32:19Speaker 1: grandson and who I three, and he was having fun
- 32:23Speaker 1: with it, flipping the switches and looking at the lights
- 32:25Speaker 1: and making it all work.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Yeah. I think the computer engineering for babies, that one
- 32:30Speaker 2: is a little bit more basic level, like push this button,
- 32:33Speaker 2: the light comes on. Don't push this button and the
- 32:36Speaker 2: lights on. Push the button the light turns off.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:38Speaker 2: That has Max and Daniel both understood that one. They
- 32:41Speaker 2: were both able to do, turn the latch on, hit
- 32:43Speaker 2: the reset button. They all they figured that one out.
- 32:46Speaker 2: The computer engineering for big babies that takes some a
- 32:50Speaker 2: little bit more understanding of logic gates and some other
- 32:53Speaker 2: stuff like that. Like that one took me a couple
- 32:54Speaker 2: of times going through it to figure it out. So
- 32:57Speaker 2: that's a little bit more advanced. Not saying they won't
- 32:59Speaker 2: get to that, but don't expect a kid to just
- 33:03Speaker 2: they're just gonna want to flip the switches up and down, yeah,
- 33:05Speaker 2: and watch the LEDs go up and down and stuff
- 33:08Speaker 2: like that. But I'm excited to see this new book.
- 33:10Speaker 2: It's simple machines right right. But again, it was cool
- 33:14Speaker 2: because we asked him if he had any future projects
- 33:16Speaker 2: when he was on the show. He said, oh, I
- 33:19Speaker 2: guess I can tell you guys, and he.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Told the show for us yes, which.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Was really cool. So we're gonna have to get him
- 33:24Speaker 2: back on the show talk about this.
- 33:25Speaker 1: It would be good somebody else. Since we're on the
- 33:27Speaker 1: subject of books. David pog who's also been on the
- 33:30Speaker 1: show before. You've seen him as a CBS News contributor.
- 33:33Speaker 1: David's got a book coming out highlighting the Life of Apple,
- 33:37Speaker 1: which is gonna be pretty good talking about, you know,
- 33:41Speaker 1: what Apple has been through over the years, the changes
- 33:45Speaker 1: not only in the product, the changes in the theory
- 33:50Speaker 1: of what technology is all about. And David has been
- 33:54Speaker 1: working really hard in this book, so be looking for
- 33:56Speaker 1: that one. I'm going to try and see if I
- 33:58Speaker 1: can get David back on the show. We've had him
- 33:59Speaker 1: on I think a couple of times over the years.
- 34:02Speaker 2: And again the sock, See what.
- 34:04Speaker 1: He thinks about the sock? We got to ask everybody,
- 34:07Speaker 1: so do you get the sock? See what he thinks
- 34:10Speaker 1: about that? All right? So that's one. The other one
- 34:13Speaker 1: is do you remember growing up sean magazine that was
- 34:18Speaker 1: really thick called Computer Shopper, and it was it was
- 34:24Speaker 1: a huge magazine and you could flip through it and
- 34:27Speaker 1: you'd see stories, you'd see sales, you'd see all this
- 34:31Speaker 1: cool tech. I mean, we're and we're talking, you know,
- 34:34Speaker 1: like the nineties two thousand. It was always fun to
- 34:37Speaker 1: read and it was super thick, super thick magazine again,
- 34:41Speaker 1: Computer Shopper, and it kind of went away, I think
- 34:44Speaker 1: early the early two thousands. But there's a brand new
- 34:48Speaker 1: one called Computer Gazette Magazine, which is you know, trying
- 34:52Speaker 1: to get more people into it. You can find it
- 34:55Speaker 1: on Facebook or check out Computeesgazette dot com. Computes Gazette
- 35:01Speaker 1: dot com, uh, and you can find it there and
- 35:04Speaker 1: they're got their November issue. It's been a while, but
- 35:07Speaker 1: they're putting this one out and they, you know, want
- 35:09Speaker 1: people to check it out, especially if you like some
- 35:12Speaker 1: of the older technology, whether it be Amiga or Commodore
- 35:16Speaker 1: or you know early Apple, like you know, my one
- 35:18Speaker 1: of my first was the Apple two E. But again
- 35:21Speaker 1: you could find some great stories in there in this
- 35:24Speaker 1: new Computer Gazette Magazine again that's Computes Gazette dot com
- 35:30Speaker 1: of this, and I wouldn't mind getting them on the
- 35:32Speaker 1: show too, talking about you know what are they thinking?
- 35:34Speaker 2: What nine five a month for print and digital?
- 35:38Speaker 1: I could I could get Netflix for that, can you?
- 35:44Speaker 1: I think.
- 35:46Speaker 2: The only ones that I ever subscribed to, caitl I
- 35:48Speaker 2: actually just talked about magazine descriptions here Ech it's great.
- 35:51Speaker 2: We were talking about like how magazines were just one
- 35:55Speaker 2: big ad. Oh yeah, yeah, for a lot of stuff,
- 35:58Speaker 2: right right, so right, PC Gamer was one that I had. Yeah,
- 36:03Speaker 2: Transworld Motocross is what I had because I was big
- 36:05Speaker 2: into motocross growing up, right, trying to think of there's
- 36:08Speaker 2: another game when I had Gaming Went Intended Power was
- 36:10Speaker 2: what I had.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Oh I remember that one. Yeah, I still have.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I don't have a lot of I mean, I don't
- 36:14Speaker 2: think I have any of them but anymore.
- 36:16Speaker 1: But oh I still I still have a lot of mine.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Uh mine Boot if you remember Boot magazine. Boot was
- 36:24Speaker 1: really good Maximum PC, which I think was may have
- 36:28Speaker 1: been for the same editors it's that was also a
- 36:30Speaker 1: good one, and we've had editors on the show over
- 36:33Speaker 1: the years when that one was out, and Boot was
- 36:36Speaker 1: one of my favorite because Boot was like for those
- 36:39Speaker 1: that really liked gaming, that liked you know, the top
- 36:42Speaker 1: end of technology when it came to their own rigs
- 36:45Speaker 1: what they were putting on. You saw three D effects
- 36:47Speaker 1: in there quite a bit. You know, they have the
- 36:49Speaker 1: Voodoo cards which were awesome. Creative Labs was if you
- 36:52Speaker 1: wanted sound and great sound, you wanted something from Creative
- 36:56Speaker 1: Labs in there. Uh, if you wanted you know, great
- 36:59Speaker 1: hard drive technolog you know you were looking at the
- 37:02Speaker 1: ten thousand rpm drives. You were going that way. And yeah,
- 37:05Speaker 1: it's kind of it's kind of neat to take a
- 37:08Speaker 1: step back, but yeah, I have all of my Boot magazines,
- 37:12Speaker 1: Maximum PCs and stuff over the years. It's it's kind
- 37:15Speaker 1: of cool. And then the other course was PC magazine
- 37:17Speaker 1: from ZD. I know that before we take a break,
- 37:22Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw the story that Paramount
- 37:24Speaker 1: Plus is going to raise their prices and you're ready
- 37:28Speaker 1: for this one no more seven day free trial. So
- 37:32Speaker 1: they're hoping that people will just come over anyways, no
- 37:35Speaker 1: seven day free trial and just go ahead and sign
- 37:38Speaker 1: up for that higher price for Paramount Plus. Kind of
- 37:41Speaker 1: makes you wonder, all right, we're got to take another
- 37:43Speaker 1: quick we got to take another quick break. We come
- 37:45Speaker 1: back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 37:48Speaker 2: I'm shy to wear.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Subscribe us for free, yeah free.
- 37:51Speaker 2: We're free on your favorite on your favorite podcasting platform,
- 37:55Speaker 2: and I do find us on Facebook at tech Talker.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Now back to TIF talk. I wanted to get your
- 38:02Speaker 1: thoughts on this, Sean, because I'm thinking about delving into this,
- 38:06Speaker 1: and you know, I know it could probably or maybe
- 38:09Speaker 1: be a fad. And over the years, I've looked at
- 38:12Speaker 1: different different devices that pair with your smartphone that are
- 38:18Speaker 1: sunglasses so you can put them on and you can
- 38:21Speaker 1: hear whether it be bone conduction and you can hear it.
- 38:24Speaker 1: And I remember when Matt first came on the show,
- 38:26Speaker 1: he won the mojaua bone conducting where they just fit
- 38:30Speaker 1: right over your temple and that's how it plays music.
- 38:34Speaker 1: And we've seen those over the years. Paula Abdul got
- 38:37Speaker 1: together with a company and they sent us one of
- 38:40Speaker 1: those to try out, and it was a lot of fun.
- 38:42Speaker 1: But now I'm seriously looking at the Meta ray Ban
- 38:45Speaker 1: glasses and I don't know if you've heard about these,
- 38:49Speaker 1: but they are they look like sunglasses, but there are
- 38:52Speaker 1: lenses in them so it can shoot video, take stills.
- 38:57Speaker 1: They and that's the thing. It's a little hard to
- 39:01Speaker 1: bite because the price is a little crazy. For the
- 39:04Speaker 1: Gen one, which is out now, they run anywhere from
- 39:07Speaker 1: two at the low point two fifty to about three
- 39:10Speaker 1: hundred and eighty depending on the lens or depending on
- 39:13Speaker 1: the type. But the Gen one, here's a downside to it.
- 39:18Speaker 1: You get four hours battery life, and that's four hours
- 39:21Speaker 1: of just okay, use here and there. My buddy Tyler,
- 39:25Speaker 1: who I do the segments on Fox eleven with Tyler,
- 39:29Speaker 1: said that that's if you're using it constantly, it's going
- 39:32Speaker 1: to be a little different, probably even less. Features. A
- 39:37Speaker 1: basic camera and audio dual five megapixel cameras, open your speakers,
- 39:42Speaker 1: you get short video clips. Their resolution isn't that great.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Microphones they're okay, but when noise handling, they say, isn't
- 39:50Speaker 1: that great. No live streaming, so you can't wear them
- 39:53Speaker 1: and go live, and no AI assistant. The new Gen
- 39:58Speaker 1: two's which are available now at least a couple of
- 40:00Speaker 1: years ago, and they've kind of improved on them. It
- 40:03Speaker 1: could be time for Gen three have twelve megapixel cameras
- 40:07Speaker 1: or photos ten ADP video, you get upgraded speakers with
- 40:12Speaker 1: louder sound less leak five mic array for improved voice capture,
- 40:17Speaker 1: live streaming support to Instagram, Facebook directly with the glasses.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Because remember it's Meta and it has AI built into it.
- 40:25Speaker 1: So if you want to ask Meta AI question, you
- 40:28Speaker 1: say hey, Meta, and you could ask it a question.
- 40:31Speaker 1: It would deliver that answer into your ears. Longer battery
- 40:36Speaker 1: life about eight hours, they say, and fast charge in
- 40:39Speaker 1: the case. But do you think these Meda ray ban
- 40:42Speaker 1: smart classes? Are they a fad or is this something
- 40:45Speaker 1: that will continue to be developed.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I think it's a fad.
- 40:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I really get nervous about It's a privacy thing, right,
- 40:59Speaker 3: So if you're worrying classes at any.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Moment, in any moment, you could just be like, poop,
- 41:03Speaker 2: I'm recording now.
- 41:05Speaker 1: It doesn't it doesn't alert anybody around you. I think.
- 41:09Speaker 1: I don't think it has a red light on it.
- 41:11Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know. I mean there has to
- 41:13Speaker 2: be some sort of indicator, right, because I mean people
- 41:19Speaker 2: are going to use that nefariously, people are gonna use that.
- 41:25Speaker 2: And you might say something off canter or maybe something
- 41:29Speaker 2: you don't want to be public, and you have to
- 41:32Speaker 2: worry about privacy.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Brothers always watching.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Yeah, but not every we have to remember, not every state,
- 41:39Speaker 2: but one party.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Consent state rights.
- 41:42Speaker 2: If you walk into a room and you're recording and
- 41:45Speaker 2: there's a reasonable expectation of privacy, you have to if
- 41:49Speaker 2: you're recording, you legitimately have to announce, hey, I'm recording this.
- 41:55Speaker 2: And a lot of facilities, a lot of places you're
- 41:58Speaker 2: going in public have rules for recording. You can't go
- 42:03Speaker 2: into a private establishment and record without permission. So if
- 42:07Speaker 2: you are, you're violating the law. Two. If it's a
- 42:10Speaker 2: single party consense state, it gets it gets tricky. If
- 42:14Speaker 2: it's a two party consense state, absolutely not. But it's
- 42:19Speaker 2: it's all ethical at that point. It's all about like
- 42:22Speaker 2: what for me? It's what am I gaining right right
- 42:28Speaker 2: by live streaming this interaction.
- 42:30Speaker 1: You know, it's funny you're talking about this, Sean, and
- 42:34Speaker 1: I'm thinking, I'm remembering Black Friday some years ago. I
- 42:39Speaker 1: want to say, it's when you know, one of my
- 42:42Speaker 1: TV segments, I went to our local Best Buy and
- 42:47Speaker 1: they let me set up inside the store before they
- 42:49Speaker 1: opened the doors on Black Friday. And I mean I
- 42:52Speaker 1: had a tripod, I had a full camera, microphones. I
- 42:55Speaker 1: had a light that was really not needed. But again
- 42:59Speaker 1: and they open the doors and here they come rushing
- 43:01Speaker 1: towards the camera. It's great video. I've got I've got that. Now, creators,
- 43:06Speaker 1: those people that want to create videos can walk into
- 43:09Speaker 1: a store and if they if they're quick, if they're quick,
- 43:14Speaker 1: they can have somebody showing off a product without even
- 43:17Speaker 1: them having to buy it now and show, hey, this
- 43:19Speaker 1: is the newest product. I'm looking at it at store
- 43:21Speaker 1: shelves from lynksiss or, I'm looking at this product from
- 43:24Speaker 1: Western Digital, and they're showing it on the shelves. They're
- 43:27Speaker 1: not even buying it. And there's they're creating, you know,
- 43:31Speaker 1: videos that could go viral of somebody showing off a
- 43:34Speaker 1: product in a store. Whereas before you had to get permission.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I had to get permission from Best By Corporate to
- 43:39Speaker 1: be able to be in there, even though it was
- 43:41Speaker 1: a news crew to do this. Where people are finding
- 43:44Speaker 1: they don't have to do that anymore.
- 43:46Speaker 2: And what's I'm saying, It's like it's like it's it's
- 43:48Speaker 2: just ushering in a new era of I don't even
- 43:53Speaker 2: know what tow to fraze.
- 43:54Speaker 1: It well and I can't. The reason I want to
- 43:56Speaker 1: get it because amag you know, my grandson is is
- 43:59Speaker 1: you know, for there are moments where I don't want
- 44:01Speaker 1: to pull out my cam my phone and you know,
- 44:04Speaker 1: shoot video all the time. You just have it on.
- 44:06Speaker 1: I just have my my lenses on. So we take
- 44:08Speaker 1: them to the park, you know, we go somewhere. We're
- 44:10Speaker 1: talking about a Disney trip.
- 44:11Speaker 2: But they're but they're they're ray like are they do
- 44:15Speaker 2: they have clear lenses or are they sunglasses?
- 44:17Speaker 1: They have sunglasses and look, well you can get clear lenses.
- 44:21Speaker 1: So just be like wearing my sunglasses. You know, that's
- 44:23Speaker 1: the thing. So you know, that was one of that
- 44:27Speaker 1: was the thought for it. The price is a little
- 44:30Speaker 1: but Tyler was was shooting video of him driving to
- 44:33Speaker 1: Disneyland and you know, out of the car and now
- 44:36Speaker 1: that he wasn't holding the camera, he wasn't holding the phone.
- 44:40Speaker 1: It was taken with his Gen one ray band glass.
- 44:43Speaker 1: I thought that's kind of cool. You know, you're on
- 44:46Speaker 1: a road trip, you want to get a photo, you
- 44:48Speaker 1: want to be safe. That's one way to do it.
- 44:51Speaker 2: I don't know, I think it's just I think it's
- 44:53Speaker 2: a I don't think it ever caught on.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
- 44:55Speaker 2: I feel like it's a very small place. It's very
- 44:58Speaker 2: small place to try and cram it. It's on a
- 44:59Speaker 2: hardware and you're gonna sacrifice the size for battery life,
- 45:03Speaker 2: so it's not gonna be super great.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Yeah, very niche, very niche.
- 45:07Speaker 2: So I don't know. I won't get one. I think
- 45:11Speaker 2: I think they're silly. Yeah, I got I always have
- 45:14Speaker 2: since they were first announced.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I got one from a company called the Hauh Dajo
- 45:19Speaker 1: Cam Go, and it's a body camera and we're actually
- 45:23Speaker 1: it's actually gonna be used in a video that I'm
- 45:25Speaker 1: helping a buddy do that's all about remote control airplanes.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I've talked about that. We went out and did the drone,
- 45:30Speaker 1: so we were thinking, hey, we could attach the body
- 45:33Speaker 1: cam while he's flying the plane going in circles, so
- 45:37Speaker 1: you see the plane and you see his arm outstretched.
- 45:41Speaker 1: But that thing only gets seriously it's maybe an hour
- 45:45Speaker 1: of video and then it has to be tied to
- 45:47Speaker 1: a device, and it's like that's kind of a pain.
- 45:49Speaker 1: So I thought these also could be used for that.
- 45:51Speaker 1: But yeah, you may you may be right, and that
- 45:54Speaker 1: privacy thing is going to be a big concern with people.
- 45:57Speaker 1: That's I mean, it's the privacy.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Things are concern now just phones in general. Yeah, you're
- 46:02Speaker 2: you have the capability of live streaming live stuff. I mean,
- 46:05Speaker 2: just think of all the stories you've read about somebody
- 46:08Speaker 2: getting caught in this. People think I'm a little bit
- 46:11Speaker 2: paranoid about this, right, But it's like, right, being in
- 46:14Speaker 2: public and policing yourself and just be a good human being.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Let's just put it that way, right, just be a
- 46:20Speaker 2: good human being. Don't do dumb stuff. But what what
- 46:24Speaker 2: happens if I do something silly or I pick my
- 46:26Speaker 2: nose in public, or I do something stupid? Right, you
- 46:29Speaker 2: know what I mean? Whatever, Like little things like that,
- 46:30Speaker 2: let me catch something and now I'm a.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Meme exactly right, memes.
- 46:38Speaker 2: It could be embarrassing for me. Yeah, it could be
- 46:41Speaker 2: traumatic for me. It could be job ending depending on
- 46:44Speaker 2: the content. Right. It's like there's an unnecessary burden mentally
- 46:49Speaker 2: for not even my generation, just everybody yet getting caught
- 46:54Speaker 2: in these scenarios where you have to understand that you're
- 46:57Speaker 2: being recorded twenty four to seven all the time. That
- 47:00Speaker 2: has to take a mental toll on kids, on adults,
- 47:04Speaker 2: on It's just I think it's unnecessarily a mental burden
- 47:08Speaker 2: on a lot of people. And I don't know, this
- 47:11Speaker 2: is weird. It's that's how I think about it.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it makes sense. It totally makes sense how you
- 47:15Speaker 1: feel too, And I think a lot of people probably
- 47:18Speaker 1: feel the same way about that. I know that you
- 47:21Speaker 1: love this, this space travel, and you love rockets and
- 47:25Speaker 1: you love you know, everything, and it comes to it
- 47:28Speaker 1: Blue Origin, of course they did their flight, and I
- 47:31Speaker 1: know you did a little like studying into that. Is
- 47:34Speaker 1: this kind of a good thing? Is this a big thing?
- 47:36Speaker 2: It's a great it's a great thing. Right. So Blue
- 47:39Speaker 2: Origin is owned by Amazon, which everybody's you know whatever.
- 47:42Speaker 2: It's another billionaire of putting stuff into space. Great, it's
- 47:46Speaker 2: good for the competition. It's the space race right all
- 47:52Speaker 2: through the sixties and seventies. It was China versus rushovers
- 47:55Speaker 2: the US first, Yea, India and Pakistan. And now it's
- 48:01Speaker 2: had stalled off for many, many many years because the
- 48:04Speaker 2: cost was prohibited because it was one time use. SpaceX
- 48:08Speaker 2: came along said well, we're gonna launch a booster that
- 48:10Speaker 2: we can reuse and land it. So in twenty sixteen
- 48:13Speaker 2: they launched the Falcon nine on a booster, landed on
- 48:16Speaker 2: drone ship, brought it back, reused it. They've been reusing drone.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I mean yeah pretty amas, yeah.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Dozen, dozens of dozens of times per per booster, saving
- 48:27Speaker 2: saving billions of dollars. But then they were the only
- 48:30Speaker 2: ones that were able to make a reasonable booster that
- 48:32Speaker 2: could then land and be reused for future flights. Blue
- 48:36Speaker 2: Origin finally did the second flight of their new Glen
- 48:40Speaker 2: baster and on their second attempt landed it on a
- 48:45Speaker 2: drone ship in the ocean and aren't gonna use it. It
- 48:48Speaker 2: was incredible to see so again to see a another
- 48:52Speaker 2: competitor joined the joined the market in reusable boosters to
- 48:57Speaker 2: get stuff to space. It's gonna just ramp up. Other
- 49:00Speaker 2: companies are gonna try it. Other companies are gonna put
- 49:03Speaker 2: development into it. It gives NASA, it gives other companies
- 49:08Speaker 2: that are putting satellites into space the opportunity to go
- 49:10Speaker 2: with a different vendor. It's going to lower cost potentially
- 49:14Speaker 2: because of competition. So it's incredible to watch. Go to
- 49:19Speaker 2: their website Blue Origin find it the new Glen too.
- 49:23Speaker 2: It's just it's just a cool, surreal experience to see
- 49:25Speaker 2: it happen. I watched it live and it brought back
- 49:28Speaker 2: memories because I watched the Falcon nine booster twenty sixteen
- 49:33Speaker 2: land live which was really cool. And now I have
- 49:38Speaker 2: an app called NSF which is Next space Flight, which
- 49:43Speaker 2: tracks all these flights from SpaceX to Blue Origin to
- 49:48Speaker 2: rocket labs out of New Zealand and the you know,
- 49:51Speaker 2: the Indian Space Force right and China launching some of
- 49:55Speaker 2: their satellites and stuff like that. It covers pretty much
- 49:59Speaker 2: every space flight comes that happens. Is is getting alert
- 50:02Speaker 2: for it and you can watch it because they prefers
- 50:04Speaker 2: livestream all the space flights now. But yeah, the space
- 50:08Speaker 2: stuff stuff, it's really cool.
- 50:09Speaker 1: All right, and you could see this on YouTube right.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Tech Crunch, I know, had a story about it too.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Tech tech Crunch had an article about it. You can
- 50:15Speaker 2: just search Blue Origin New Glen Rocket and it'll be
- 50:18Speaker 2: one of the first things find.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Perfect another quick break, we'll be back with more of
- 50:21Speaker 1: tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 50:23Speaker 2: I'm sure to words send us an x at tech
- 50:25Speaker 2: talk Radio. We'll bear back.
- 50:27Speaker 1: And back to tech talk Radio. All right. I have
- 50:30Speaker 1: a quick reminder for our listeners. No doubt you know
- 50:33Speaker 1: the shopping season has begun. Black Friday coming up, and
- 50:37Speaker 1: of course a lot of the retailers out there want
- 50:39Speaker 1: to get a piece of your hard earned dollar, but
- 50:42Speaker 1: so do a lot of scammers. Just just a reminder
- 50:47Speaker 1: that you get an email and it looks like it's
- 50:50Speaker 1: from you know, one of those retailers, whether it be
- 50:52Speaker 1: Cohle's or Walmart or best Buy or even Amazon, and
- 50:57Speaker 1: it says, you know, to get this deal, you got
- 50:59Speaker 1: to click here. Do not click there. Just don't take
- 51:03Speaker 1: the chance. There's a lot of scammers out there that
- 51:05Speaker 1: can create great landing pages that you'll go to to
- 51:09Speaker 1: think you're getting a great deal and it turns out
- 51:11Speaker 1: you're not. You'll be scammed into putting your information or
- 51:14Speaker 1: your logging credentials for another site that looks very similar
- 51:19Speaker 1: and give up the info. Honestly, if you want to
- 51:22Speaker 1: shop for the deals, go to that retailer's website. Don't
- 51:26Speaker 1: click an email to make a purchase. Go to that
- 51:30Speaker 1: website itself and do your purchase there. Also, if you're
- 51:33Speaker 1: going to be out shopping and maybe you're having a
- 51:35Speaker 1: cup of coffee somewhere. We talked about it earlier, VPN
- 51:38Speaker 1: use don't do your purchases through a coffee shop internet connection. Honestly,
- 51:45Speaker 1: that's just not a good way to do it. Make
- 51:47Speaker 1: sure you have some kind of protection on your system, VPN,
- 51:50Speaker 1: the whole bit. But again, just a little extra, a
- 51:53Speaker 1: little extra warning to how to be safe. Now here's
- 51:56Speaker 1: something to share with you. This is the time of
- 51:58Speaker 1: the year where we see a lot of dogs and cats.
- 52:02Speaker 1: If you're on next door or on Facebook, you hear
- 52:05Speaker 1: a lot of them just running off, running away, and
- 52:08Speaker 1: then you hear a lot about the Animal League of
- 52:11Speaker 1: Green Valley, you know, posters pack is inundated with dogs
- 52:16Speaker 1: and cats that have been lost. Here's the thing, there
- 52:19Speaker 1: is a product out there that can help. And if
- 52:21Speaker 1: you love your dog or cat, which hopefully you do,
- 52:24Speaker 1: it's called the five Mini Pet Tracker, and it's GPS
- 52:29Speaker 1: and it's barely bigger than an air tag, has more
- 52:33Speaker 1: accuracy than what they say Bluetooth trackers is, and is
- 52:36Speaker 1: small enough to fit on a cat. So while we
- 52:39Speaker 1: most of the time I think just putting on a
- 52:41Speaker 1: tracker or maybe on your dog, you could put it
- 52:44Speaker 1: on your cat. And it's a small smart collar and
- 52:48Speaker 1: it comes as a subscription about one hundred and twenty
- 52:50Speaker 1: nine bucks per year. You can attach it to any
- 52:53Speaker 1: collar or harness that's about three eighth to one inch wide,
- 52:57Speaker 1: and it's suitable for dogs of cats of any size.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Now there's saying it's because of the size. Now I'm
- 53:01Speaker 1: thinking you could do this with an air tag, right,
- 53:04Speaker 1: I mean, we've heard great stories about air tags being
- 53:06Speaker 1: used where people are traveling putting in their luggage, their
- 53:10Speaker 1: luggage gets taken and then they track it down. There's
- 53:12Speaker 1: a great one about a month ago with that. But
- 53:15Speaker 1: if you want to take a look at it, shop
- 53:17Speaker 1: dot tri fi t r y fi dot com. We've
- 53:21Speaker 1: not looked at it, so we don't know. We just
- 53:23Speaker 1: know that this is out there if you're looking for
- 53:25Speaker 1: a solution to be able to track Fluffy.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Or I mean, it just looks like a dog collar.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Yeah, dog color, and it's got be anything.
- 53:33Speaker 2: But it's got real time GPS, live tracking and Escabler,
- 53:37Speaker 2: so I'm assuming it's got some sort of geo fencing
- 53:39Speaker 2: on there.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Altae covers using Verizon Altae Mobile. It says it does
- 53:44Speaker 2: three weeks of battery life with USBC charging or can
- 53:47Speaker 2: compared to a five base for extended up to three
- 53:49Speaker 2: months of battery life, assuming when the dog is asleep
- 53:53Speaker 2: or you're home, you can.
- 53:54Speaker 1: Wow charge it.
- 53:56Speaker 2: It's IP sixty A waterproof, so is there in the rain,
- 54:00Speaker 2: outdoors or so. It looks like something for a concerned
- 54:03Speaker 2: pet owner.
- 54:04Speaker 1: There you go.
- 54:05Speaker 2: If you don't want to, if you don't want to
- 54:06Speaker 2: do the r FID micro chipping, this is something a
- 54:09Speaker 2: little bit more removable.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 54:12Speaker 2: I still think you should get your pets chipped, to
- 54:14Speaker 2: be honest, absolutely, yep. Uh cop. Fun fact is that
- 54:17Speaker 2: if you if you're a nerd and you have a
- 54:20Speaker 2: flipper zero, you can read the RFID tags on pets
- 54:23Speaker 2: it with a flipper zero.
- 54:24Speaker 1: I want to get one of those. Yes, yeah, so.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Yeah, So this just looks like a for something a
- 54:32Speaker 2: concerned pet owner might want.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe we'll have to get a flipper zero and
- 54:36Speaker 1: talk about that in the next couple of weeks. That
- 54:38Speaker 1: would be cool, right, shop dot try fi dot com.
- 54:41Speaker 1: That's it for this week's tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
