- 0:00Speaker 1: We have this tool that is so magical, it's the
- 0:03Speaker 1: most profound tool, better than any medicine out there, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: we forget to use it. It's the breath.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hey, Hurdlers, Emily ABOUDI here bringing you another installment of
- 0:28Speaker 2: Hurdle moment from Hurdle. Today on the show, I wanted
- 0:32Speaker 2: to compliment the episode that came out on Monday with

- 0:41Speaker 2: I highly highly recommend that you head on over to
- 0:45Speaker 2: episode one fifty one and give that a listen. Doctor
- 0:48Speaker 2: Java talked about the power of our breath and how
- 0:52Speaker 2: breathwork can make a major difference when it comes to
- 0:56Speaker 2: how we perform, how we show up, and how we
- 0:59Speaker 2: execute at some of the hardest moments, and so I
- 1:03Speaker 2: felt it appropriate to bring in a breathwork expert to
- 1:08Speaker 2: chat about the practice today, and that expert is Joy Duche.
- 1:12Speaker 2: As I mentioned, Joy is a breathwork expert. She's also
- 1:15Speaker 2: a spiritual and holistic life a guide, an intuitive energy healer,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and she is a fellow podcast host of the Methodology podcast.
- 1:25Speaker 2: In today's episode, we unpack what breath work is how
- 1:28Speaker 2: breathwork is different than meditation, and she offers up a
- 1:32Speaker 2: few different examples of what this might look like in
- 1:35Speaker 2: your routine, as well as highlights the benefits of the
- 1:38Speaker 2: practice how it can dramatically impact everything from your anxiety
- 1:42Speaker 2: to how you even experience pain in your body. Joy
- 1:46Speaker 2: also gives me a little information and insight asked you
- 1:49Speaker 2: how she got started with breathwork navigating some past trauma
- 1:53Speaker 2: in her own life and it was such a major
- 1:55Speaker 2: game changer for her that she decided, Hey, I want

- 4:28Speaker 2: and also host of the Methodology podcast. How are you
- 4:32Speaker 2: doing today, Joy.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'm doing great. Thank you, Emily. It's great to be
- 4:36Speaker 1: here with you.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Thank you so much for coming on today. We are
- 4:40Speaker 2: going to talk about a topic that I feel as
- 4:43Speaker 2: though is definitely getting more buzzy, especially as we're all
- 4:48Speaker 2: spending more time at home and trying to just find
- 4:52Speaker 2: some calm. We're talking about breath work. I'd love to
- 4:56Speaker 2: know from the get go, how did you get involved
- 4:59Speaker 2: with the practice of breath work and becoming a breathwork facilitator.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's been a journey of a long amount of healing
- 5:10Speaker 1: and seeking, seeking first for myself, my own personal healing
- 5:14Speaker 1: and then sharing you know the magic of what was
- 5:17Speaker 1: happening for me with others and bringing that into my
- 5:20Speaker 1: coaching practice. So one day I just almost accidentally found
- 5:27Speaker 1: this breathwork, what I call the alchemical breath work, that
- 5:31Speaker 1: literally was life changing for me. And I had the
- 5:35Speaker 1: most wild, you know, unexpected experience of like dramatic healing
- 5:42Speaker 1: in that one session that changed everything for me after
- 5:45Speaker 1: twenty years of seeking different modalities to heal PTSD post
- 5:50Speaker 1: traumatic stress disorder and limiting you know, emotional pain that
- 5:56Speaker 1: I just couldn't and nothing else could really breathe until
- 6:00Speaker 1: I found this breath work.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Interesting, So what was going on on this particular day
- 6:05Speaker 2: that led you to finding this practice?
- 6:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great question. So I was on this
- 6:12Speaker 1: self designed healing retreat that I created for myself in California.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I left New York as I was experiencing this awakening,
- 6:21Speaker 1: the spiritual awakening, so to speak, and I was just
- 6:25Speaker 1: seeking different modalities, and so I was doing lots of
- 6:29Speaker 1: research and I put a whole list of different you know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: healing modalities and immersions together in this week and a half,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and somewhere I found something about breath work, and I
- 6:47Speaker 1: just you know, read the little paragraph the description, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: I showed up to the woman's house that was offering,
- 6:55Speaker 1: uh this this healing modality. And so it was out
- 6:59Speaker 1: an echo park in California, and I get to her
- 7:02Speaker 1: house very non assuming, you know, very simple. I lie
- 7:06Speaker 1: down on her living room floor and I, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 1: she plays some music for me and light some incense
- 7:14Speaker 1: and this, you know, just the sense and everything to
- 7:19Speaker 1: you know, really allowed me to have this space for healing.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And and then I just don't know, I felt like
- 7:26Speaker 1: I really left my body in a way and started
- 7:30Speaker 1: to experience like euphoria in that session at the same
- 7:34Speaker 1: time that I was like purging so much emotional pain
- 7:39Speaker 1: and grief and time escaped me. It was like I
- 7:44Speaker 1: just literally left like the world that I've always like
- 7:48Speaker 1: lived in and experienced different dimensions and euphoria, as I said.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And then the session was over and I was just
- 7:56Speaker 1: completely like in shock, Like I was like, what just happened?
- 8:01Speaker 1: You know? And it took me a few days to
- 8:05Speaker 1: kind of like come down and come back to earth
- 8:07Speaker 1: and come back into my body. But then I continued
- 8:11Speaker 1: with that with Michelle, who's my She was my breathwork
- 8:15Speaker 1: coach for about seven months continuously, and I was having radical,
- 8:21Speaker 1: radical like life changing healing throughout that experience, and so
- 8:26Speaker 1: I then felt the need to go out and you know,
- 8:32Speaker 1: do the training for myself. So I would travel from
- 8:35Speaker 1: New York to LA with my teacher David Elliott and
- 8:39Speaker 1: completed the you know, practitioner training. Then I started to
- 8:42Speaker 1: bring it into my own practice, and I found that
- 8:45Speaker 1: it was the most potent modality. Along with the coaching
- 8:49Speaker 1: and intuitive therapies and reiki and everything, the breath is
- 8:54Speaker 1: the vehicle really that gets us there.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Interesting, So I think a lot of people they hear
- 9:01Speaker 2: this story and maybe whether it is with breath work
- 9:04Speaker 2: or with meditation, they could have some hesitancy about approaching
- 9:12Speaker 2: or going through the same type of journey. For someone
- 9:14Speaker 2: who may be a skeptic, how would you suggest that
- 9:18Speaker 2: they get out of their own way, so to speak,
- 9:21Speaker 2: to unlock a practice such as this.
- 9:25Speaker 1: So let me just give you a little bit of
- 9:28Speaker 1: a backstory. So I started with a passive meditation. I'm
- 9:33Speaker 1: calling it passive because the breathwork that I'm talking about
- 9:36Speaker 1: is a more active way of reading that helps us
- 9:39Speaker 1: to leave our controlling conscious mind. Because our conscious mind
- 9:45Speaker 1: the thought forms is what does hald us back from
- 9:49Speaker 1: lots of freedom in our life and love because of
- 9:53Speaker 1: the limiting beliefs that control our mind that we have stored.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And you know, it's the busy, very very busy the
- 10:00Speaker 1: mind that you know, is accumulation of all the years
- 10:04Speaker 1: of conditioning and programming and parenting and bullying and all
- 10:08Speaker 1: the stuff that has not allowed us to access that healing. Right.
- 10:13Speaker 1: But years before that, years before that, I started to meditate,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and meditation really changed my life too. I mean it
- 10:21Speaker 1: was really the segue to quiet the mind and to
- 10:24Speaker 1: come to a more relaxed way of living. It got
- 10:29Speaker 1: me out of an anxious, severely anxious body and mind
- 10:33Speaker 1: and very you know, gripping and actually crippling life. And
- 10:38Speaker 1: so when I started to find mindful meditation and the
- 10:41Speaker 1: diaphragmatic breath, which is simply just breathing. For me, it's
- 10:45Speaker 1: like breathing through the nostrils and exhaling through the mouth
- 10:51Speaker 1: probably four counts in holding for two at the top
- 10:54Speaker 1: and then four out through the mouth and then deflating
- 10:57Speaker 1: the belly back. So when I started to practice that,
- 11:01Speaker 1: that started to quiet my mind and allowed me for
- 11:04Speaker 1: a lot more ease and peace in my life, a
- 11:06Speaker 1: more flexible brain, a more spontaneous and flexible way of living.
- 11:11Speaker 1: When I found breath work, which is the active breath
- 11:14Speaker 1: work that I'm sharing with you, it's the alchemy that
- 11:17Speaker 1: helps us to move stored energy in the body. It
- 11:20Speaker 1: helps us to get rid of lots of fears, lots
- 11:23Speaker 1: of things that hold us back from love and really
- 11:26Speaker 1: an open heart. So they're very different from each other,
- 11:30Speaker 1: and I want to just put a point on that
- 11:32Speaker 1: because it's you know, breathwork can sound like it's just
- 11:37Speaker 1: a linear but it's not. It's a very dimensional. It's
- 11:40Speaker 1: like saying fitness. You know, there's many different ways of
- 11:43Speaker 1: working out right, There's all like there's cardio, there's frend training,
- 11:47Speaker 1: there is pilates, and so breath work can seem like
- 11:52Speaker 1: a very broad term. So I want to differentiate that
- 11:56Speaker 1: that one is the meditation that's passive, and the other
- 12:00Speaker 1: is the active, really radical way of breathing. Now one
- 12:05Speaker 1: doesn't really need to, you know, take such an aggressive approach.
- 12:09Speaker 1: When I'm talking about the passive breathing, that's the mindful breathing.
- 12:14Speaker 1: That's what I do. The first thing that I do
- 12:16Speaker 1: when I wake up to quiet the busy mind, you know,
- 12:19Speaker 1: the mind that's like already thinking about but all the
- 12:22Speaker 1: things that we have to do in a day and
- 12:24Speaker 1: the overwhelm and just taking a few moments to just
- 12:28Speaker 1: breathe into your body quiet and you know, silence the
- 12:32Speaker 1: noise now, you know. I mean, I'm sure you know
- 12:36Speaker 1: that when we with all that we have going on
- 12:40Speaker 1: in our lives and all the uncertainty right now, it
- 12:44Speaker 1: you know, we bubble up all this like emotion, right
- 12:47Speaker 1: and then all the years of stagnation and stagnant energy
- 12:50Speaker 1: that we've you know, allowed to accumulate, we kind of
- 12:54Speaker 1: need to do. Like you know, it's like like I'm sorry,
- 12:59Speaker 1: but which is the first thing that came to me
- 13:01Speaker 1: is like getting a colonic or like you know, just
- 13:04Speaker 1: cleaning out the pipes. And that's how I think the
- 13:07Speaker 1: breath work, the al chemical breath work serves. It's like,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, every maybe you're not doing it every single day,
- 13:14Speaker 1: maybe you're doing it once a week, maybe you're doing
- 13:16Speaker 1: it once every ten days, but it's a really really
- 13:21Speaker 1: healthy way to purify, to cleanse, and to keep opening
- 13:24Speaker 1: and clearing your energy and removing all that stagnation.
- 13:33Speaker 2: So give me an example then of what active breathwork
- 13:37Speaker 2: would look like.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Yeah, great, okay, So the way that I facilitate breath work,
- 13:44Speaker 1: Let's say we're doing a one on one session. Usually
- 13:47Speaker 1: what happens is a person my client, will come in
- 13:50Speaker 1: and we just start to uncover the conscious material that
- 13:54Speaker 1: they're aware of, things that you know, they're struggling with,
- 13:59Speaker 1: any intentions that they have, anything that they're aware of,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and so there's just thought provoking, intuitive therapy talk and
- 14:06Speaker 1: then that's for about WELDDA for about you know, thirty minutes,
- 14:11Speaker 1: twenty to thirty minutes, and then the actual breathing part
- 14:15Speaker 1: portion will be for about in its entirety forty five
- 14:19Speaker 1: minutes from grounding grounding them on a massage table with
- 14:24Speaker 1: a BioMed and so on and evocative music, and then
- 14:28Speaker 1: we'll start the active breathing for that portion, it'll probably
- 14:32Speaker 1: be around thirty minutes, and then there's just some like
- 14:34Speaker 1: sound healing just to restore the way that we do
- 14:38Speaker 1: this Pranayama called it. Pranayama is we're breathing in a
- 14:42Speaker 1: three part breath, So you're breathing in from your lower belly,
- 14:47Speaker 1: from the mouth, in from the high chest from your heart,
- 14:51Speaker 1: again from your mouth and then exhaling through your mouth
- 14:56Speaker 1: in a nice circular rhythm. So it's breathing in, breathing in,
- 15:01Speaker 1: breathing out. So you hear how it's nice and circular.
- 15:11Speaker 1: There's no stopping at the top or the bottom. It's
- 15:14Speaker 1: almost like you're at a cardio class with your breath.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And so what happens now is this rhythm of breathing
- 15:22Speaker 1: allows us to leave the conscious mind, gets us enter
- 15:26Speaker 1: our bodies, and we start to really get into it
- 15:30Speaker 1: and we start to feel like, you know, some vibration.
- 15:35Speaker 1: We can feel like tingling in the hands. And what's
- 15:38Speaker 1: happening is now we're moving that energy and we can
- 15:42Speaker 1: feel like some tingling and all that's all connected to
- 15:47Speaker 1: your heart meridian. And so we're awakening the heart. We're
- 15:49Speaker 1: opening up the heart, and we're allowing the lower vibrational
- 15:54Speaker 1: stored energy to move and to kind of like leave
- 15:58Speaker 1: the body somatically.
- 16:00Speaker 2: In this process. How long would you go through with
- 16:03Speaker 2: that circular breathing anywhere between seven minutes to about forty
- 16:09Speaker 2: five minutes that is, you know, it's a range. It
- 16:13Speaker 2: depends on what type of session it is for people.
- 16:15Speaker 2: That are really feeling like very stuck, dense energy and
- 16:20Speaker 2: they just need to get things moving. Doing it for
- 16:23Speaker 2: seven minutes will definitely have a wonderful benefit. So just
- 16:27Speaker 2: lying on the ground, the ideas that you need to
- 16:30Speaker 2: lie down completely flat, with your head flat and the
- 16:34Speaker 2: same line as your belly and your heart, so you
- 16:37Speaker 2: don't want to prop your head up. We need to
- 16:39Speaker 2: get a full flow of breath from the lower chakras
- 16:42Speaker 2: through the heart to the brain and moving it out
- 16:45Speaker 2: through the mouth. And for someone that's going to do
- 16:48Speaker 2: this for a longer period of time, I mean, of course,
- 16:50Speaker 2: I know that the focus is really on the process
- 16:53Speaker 2: of what is going on, but I would assume that,
- 16:56Speaker 2: especially if you're newer to the practice, that your mind
- 16:59Speaker 2: might wander. For someone who experiences that, what would you
- 17:03Speaker 2: tell them.
- 17:04Speaker 1: The thing that's really most important to get the best
- 17:06Speaker 1: benefit is to really give yourself the permission to let
- 17:11Speaker 1: go of the conscious mind as much as you can,
- 17:13Speaker 1: so focusing on your breath. If your mind wanders, I mean,
- 17:19Speaker 1: it's kind of like the point to leave your mind
- 17:23Speaker 1: in a way, because you're trying to get out of
- 17:26Speaker 1: the conscious mind and to experience these different altered states
- 17:31Speaker 1: of consciousness. Right, we're pulling up from the subconscious. But
- 17:35Speaker 1: you don't want to fall asleep and not breathe, right,
- 17:39Speaker 1: So if you can just give yourself those signals like
- 17:43Speaker 1: just remember to breathe, remember in and out all through
- 17:46Speaker 1: the mouth.
- 17:47Speaker 2: You mentioned how much this practice helped you deal with
- 17:52Speaker 2: and process trauma. What would you highlight to be some
- 17:56Speaker 2: of the other benefits of a regular breathwork practice.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, so. What happens is that we are activating
- 18:05Speaker 1: the heart and we're opening up our heart through this practice.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It's why we're breathing in first from the lower bellies
- 18:12Speaker 1: is where we store lots of lower emotions like shame, guilt, fear, doubt,
- 18:19Speaker 1: low self worth, and then we're moving the breath through
- 18:23Speaker 1: the heart meridian. And what happens is we get to
- 18:26Speaker 1: experience like this beautiful, hard opening. Many people will feel
- 18:29Speaker 1: like just like the surge of compassion and empathy and
- 18:34Speaker 1: love and gratitude as when they get into it like
- 18:38Speaker 1: mid mid session. And so you know, what we're doing
- 18:44Speaker 1: is we're really activating self love and a deeper connection
- 18:47Speaker 1: with our soul here, because the soul is the all
- 18:51Speaker 1: loving and all knowing part of us. We also activate
- 18:55Speaker 1: our intuition so we can experience lots of clarity and
- 18:59Speaker 1: more clarity in our lives where we can feel foggy.
- 19:03Speaker 1: It helps us to diminish addictive behaviors and repetitive destructive patterns.
- 19:10Speaker 1: It really helps us to build our immunity again too,
- 19:13Speaker 1: because it purifies the blood as well. This circular way
- 19:17Speaker 1: of oxygenating the blood as well, it helps us with
- 19:21Speaker 1: anxiety and removing fears. The list is like really endless.
- 19:26Speaker 1: It balances our chakras. You feel so much lighter and
- 19:31Speaker 1: you feel less. You know, if you're if you're invested
- 19:35Speaker 1: in this and you are like there's a part of
- 19:38Speaker 1: you that needs to believe in it, Like if you're
- 19:40Speaker 1: a complete skeptic. I mean I've seen complete skeptics have
- 19:45Speaker 1: mind blowing results as well. But when you start to
- 19:48Speaker 1: like surrender to it, it's just wild because the amount
- 19:54Speaker 1: of like love, energy and more heart centric way of
- 19:58Speaker 1: moving through the world just arts to take over and
- 20:01Speaker 1: it's just so lovely.
- 20:04Speaker 2: And I know that you mentioned that meditation was also
- 20:07Speaker 2: something that played a big role for you, that really
- 20:09Speaker 2: helped you. For someone who is having a little bit
- 20:13Speaker 2: of difficulty, maybe really understanding the difference between a meditative
- 20:18Speaker 2: practice and a breath work practice. What would you really
- 20:21Speaker 2: tell them?
- 20:22Speaker 1: Yeah, So, like I said before, so one is more
- 20:25Speaker 1: passive and is a way that for me, like I
- 20:29Speaker 1: call it my spiritual immunity. It's like the way that
- 20:31Speaker 1: I take care of my soul on a daily like
- 20:35Speaker 1: it's the way that I'm taking care of like my mind, body,
- 20:38Speaker 1: spirit every single day. Is just taking moments to sit
- 20:42Speaker 1: down and just quiet the mind and just breathe into
- 20:46Speaker 1: my body and move some of that noise that's in
- 20:48Speaker 1: my brain. And so what I'm doing is I'm just
- 20:51Speaker 1: sitting up right. I mean, you can do it lying
- 20:53Speaker 1: down too, but I like to sit with you know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: my feet my souls and my feet touching the ground
- 20:58Speaker 1: for grounding and centering. And then I'm just going to
- 21:02Speaker 1: breathe with four inhalations as I expand my belly, like
- 21:07Speaker 1: balloon the belly outwards so you get a much fuller breath.
- 21:09Speaker 1: The diaphegmatic breath is the most efficient way of breathing,
- 21:13Speaker 1: So inhaling through the nostrils, ballooning the belly outward for
- 21:17Speaker 1: four counts, and then I'm holding at the top just
- 21:20Speaker 1: a nice little pause for two counts, and then exhaling
- 21:24Speaker 1: through the mouth as you deflate the belly back towards
- 21:27Speaker 1: the spine for four counts, just repeating that. What you
- 21:31Speaker 1: do is you're calming your central nervous system. You're bringing
- 21:35Speaker 1: yourself to a state of ease. You're coming back to
- 21:37Speaker 1: the present moment. Right now, we're just all like experiencing there.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I don't think anybody on the planet is exempt from
- 21:45Speaker 1: feeling some worries, some you know, uncertainty that's taking us
- 21:51Speaker 1: away from the present moment. And we need to regulate that.
- 21:57Speaker 1: You know, we have to have some kind of practice.
- 21:59Speaker 1: And we have this tool that is so magical, it's
- 22:02Speaker 1: the most profound tool, better than any medicine out there,
- 22:07Speaker 1: and we forget to use it. It's the breath. So
- 22:10Speaker 1: even in like a stressful moment, if you can just
- 22:13Speaker 1: take a moment, you know, to step away and just
- 22:16Speaker 1: utilize your breath and take a deep breath and just
- 22:20Speaker 1: you know, relax and realize how powerful that can be.
- 22:24Speaker 1: And so imagine if we just take a few moments
- 22:27Speaker 1: a day to do that. So I don't think that
- 22:29Speaker 1: they are they don't compete with each other. There are
- 22:33Speaker 1: different forms of healing.
- 22:36Speaker 2: The last question I really have for you is I
- 22:39Speaker 2: know that through research there are different types of breath work.
- 22:44Speaker 2: You gave us a few different examples of ways that
- 22:47Speaker 2: we can implement it into our every day whether it
- 22:50Speaker 2: is like how you just mentioned with just deep inhales
- 22:53Speaker 2: and exiles, or perhaps that more regimented version that you
- 22:56Speaker 2: gave us before. For a beginner sort of speak, would
- 23:00Speaker 2: you say that there is a best strategy or is
- 23:04Speaker 2: the best strategy just finding a way to implement breathwork
- 23:08Speaker 2: into your routine regularly.
- 23:10Speaker 1: So what I recommend is for a complete beginner is
- 23:14Speaker 1: just take five breaths, just as I just explained, just
- 23:18Speaker 1: inhale for your nostrils, and you know, if you can
- 23:22Speaker 1: bring your belly into like a pregnant belly, but lun
- 23:25Speaker 1: it out as you're inhaling, hold at the top and
- 23:30Speaker 1: then exhale out. Just do that for five counts. Like,
- 23:35Speaker 1: just do five of those breaths, and that's a great
- 23:37Speaker 1: starting point.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Okay, great starting point and great tidbits of advice from you.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I'm curious as we close this out today, if you
- 23:48Speaker 2: had to offer yourself one piece of advice when you
- 23:51Speaker 2: began your breath work journey. What would that be?
- 23:56Speaker 1: Mmm? Uh, I love There's a there's a book that
- 24:00Speaker 1: I love. It's called Letting Go by David Hawkins. And
- 24:03Speaker 1: if I was able to just use my breath and
- 24:06Speaker 1: let go like little by little, you know, I just
- 24:09Speaker 1: feel like it would have been just so powerful from
- 24:13Speaker 1: back then. And that's something that has been such a
- 24:16Speaker 1: beautiful alchemy for me today. So if I would have
- 24:21Speaker 1: known that back then, that would have been wonderful.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Thank you so much for joining us today, joy and
- 24:26Speaker 2: fulfilling me in all about the benefits of breath work.
- 24:30Speaker 2: How can the hurdlers keep up with you? How can
